Report of Gifts 2022-2023

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends of the Baldwin Community, The first few months of my tenure as Head of School at Baldwin have been full of immense joy. Spending time with our brilliant students, developing deep admiration for our talented faculty and staff and building wonderful connections with our parent and alumnae communities have filled my days and my heart. Leading such an extraordinary school community is a true honor. In 1888 Florence Baldwin set out to offer young women the opportunity to develop competence, confidence and responsibility in a diverse and caring community. In the 135 years since, we have continued to build an educational experience second to none based on the power and importance of an all-girls education. Through our mission, vision and values, we support, encourage and develop talented girls into confident young women with vision, global understanding and the competency to make significant and enduring contributions to the world. Living and leaning into this mission is what continues to make Baldwin truly exceptional. Our current school year has continued to see stellar accomplishments such as 19 Baldwin seniors recognized by the National Merit Scholars program, eight members of the Class of 2023 who now play collegiate level sports and our Computer Science and Engineering department hosting an inaugural cross divisional “Joy Day,” where 5th graders, 8th graders and Upper School engineering students worked together in teams to design, build and race cardboard boats in a full-day DREAM Lab and engineering collaboration.

None of this would be possible without the support of our families, friends and community members who believe in the power of a Baldwin education. Your contributions enrich the fabric of our School and make a difference in the life of each student. Your generosity not only allows us to offer a transformative education for each and every Baldwin Bear, it also allows us to expand professional development opportunities for our faculty and staff, create innovative programs and learning spaces and provide co-curricular opportunities that make a lasting impact on today’s girls. With your philanthropic support, we exceeded our fundraising goal of $1.8 million for The Baldwin Fund last year, and raised an additional $1.7 million in support for our endowment and capital projects on campus. The dedication and generosity of our families, alumnae, faculty and staff helped to ensure that we have the resources we need now, and for the future, to support our girls in their educational journey, for which we are deeply grateful. I look forward to the year ahead and shaping the next exciting chapter of the School’s future together. With gratitude,

Lynne Macziewski Head of School

HIGHLIGHTS 2022-2023 Baldwin students, faculty and staff accomplished so many amazing things and had multiple opportunities to expand their learning outside of our campus. Below are some highlights from the past year. Wyss Leadership Grant Established in 2020 by Amy Wyss ’89 and Ed Jarmillo, this grant supports full-time faculty or staff members who demonstrate the capacity and desire to improve their personal leadership skills. Last year, the grant was awarded to Coordinator of Academic Support and Enrichment Pia Awal Beirne and Grade 6 Dean and Social Studies and Literacy Teacher Bridget Dougherty. Pia will attend the University of Pennsylvania’s Strategic Leadership in Education certificate program and Bridget will attend the Oxbridge Teacher Seminar: Leadership Challenges in Contemporary Education in Oxford.

The Simpson-Scott Family STEM Award This new grant, endowed by Carolyn Simpson Scott ’74 and Paul Scott as part of The Future Is Baldwin campaign, was awarded for the first time last year and is open to all faculty whose teaching focuses on science, technology, engineering, math or a related subject whose content draws heavily on STEM skills. Last year’s award went to Grade 10 Dean and Science Teacher Jacqui Calnan and Science Teacher Rita Laychock. The grant will go towards reimagining the Middle School chemistry curriculum and science sequence.

Technology and Facility Improvements During the 2022-23 school year, Baldwin’s primary internet connection was upgraded to 3BG which allows for more students, faculty and staff to connect at quicker levels and stream content simultaneously. New sound systems were also installed in our larger meeting spaces including the Simpson Center, Baldwin Commons, Gym and Aquatics Center. Finally, ten new smart boards were installed in classrooms throughout campus to increase interactive learning.

The Baldwin Commons: A refresh for a much loved space The Class of 2023 may have graduated, but their legacy will live on in The Baldwin Commons. A newly created space in the former Assembly Room, The Baldwin Commons is a place for students to socially gather together during free periods and work together on group projects. The furniture in the space, generously supported by parents of the Class of 2023, can be configured in multiple arrangements so that the girls can truly make the space their own. This space will surely be loved by many future generations of Baldwin girls. Thank you to the Class of 2023 families for this wonderful gift to the School!

Highlights from our Baldwin Bears • During last year’s Interdisciplinary Institute, some Upper School students participated in a class called “The Animal Kingdom’s Guide to the Good Life.” Taught by Grade 9 Dean and History Teacher Marian Smith and English Department Co-Chair and English Teacher Dr. Sheryl Forste-Grupp, the course focused on the philosophical and theological questions about the selfawareness and actions of animals and their relationship to human beings. The class traveled to the Philadelphia Zoo to observe animals and their behaviors and the Philadelphia Art Museum to observe how animals were depicted in art across the globe and millennia. Students then created their own posters depicting animals, illustrating a philosophical statement to encourage humans to live more mindfully, kindly or respectfully. • In March, Grade 7 welcomed Mr. Kenneth Salaam, grandfather of Fatinah Muhammad ’28, to speak to their grade. Mr. Salaam was a Philadelphia Freedom Fighter and marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King in addition to serving as one of his pallbearers. Locally, he helped to integrate Girard College. • Grade 3 students learned about Orienteering through two special days at Baldwin. Learning to use a compass and read a map, our Grade 3 Bears took to Ridley Creek State Park as part of the orienteering lesson. They then applied what they learned back on campus with their parents and guardians who joined in for an outdoor lesson! Following the girls’ lead, the studentparent teams used maps and compasses to locate landmarks around Baldwin’s campus.

Baldwin Students on the Move Baldwin students have the opportunity to learn and grow beyond our campus. Age-appropriate trips and activities allow our students to use what they know and explore the world outside our campus. • The B-Flats traveled to Copenhagen and Ordrup, Denmark for a musical exchange with Ordrup Gymnasium, along with the Haverford School Notables. The trip is an extensive performing tour, during which the students perform every day at schools, churches and castles, some dating back to the 12th century. They had the opportunity to experience life as a Danish High School student and lived with a Danish family for ten days. Between performances and events with the Danish students, Baldwin singers had the opportunity to visit Helsingor (the Hamlet castle), take a tour of the canals of Copenhagen, and see a performance of the Danish Symphony Orchestra. • Grades 7 and 8 traveled to Quebec and Puerto Rico for their language immersion trips. They had packed itineraries centering on fun and educational cultural experiences. • Our Kindergarten students visited the Philadelphia Magic Gardens and had a wonderful time exploring the colorful mosaics.

Civic Engagement Baldwin students are highly engaged in civic engagement and giving back to their community. More than 20 Upper and Middle School students were present at the Harriton House Farmstead Fair and helped run all the children’s games, managed the pumpkin painting, carried packages to cars and stayed to clean up! Throughout the year, several on-campus drives help provide food, toys, books and other needed items to organizations like the Bethesda Project, Jewish Relief Agency, Front Step, Cradles to Crayons and Impact @ Cobbs Creek, among others! Fifth graders learned about poverty and clothing insecurity and volunteered twice at Cradles to Crayons while also collecting 60 bags of clothing for those in need. We are so proud of all the ways our students give back to the community.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS Athletic • Varsity Tennis finished 2nd in the Inter-Ac • Baldwin rowers competed in the prestigious Head of the Charles • Upper and Middle School Athletic Associations hosted a free fall clinic for Lower School Bears • Varsity squash team came in 2nd in the Division I U.S. Squash National Finals and were undefeated Inter-Ac League champions

Arts • Upper School Maskers presented Mamma Mia! • Mary Poppins, Jr. was presented by the Middle School • All three divisions presented art displays in the Fackenthal-Pethick Art Gallery in the spring of 2023 • Lighthouse Wu ’24 won first place in the “Sustainable Development Goals” Art Competition sponsored by the Youth Entrepreneurship

Celebrating the Class of Gold We were delighted to celebrate with the 175 members of the Class of Gold who returned to campus to celebrate milestone reunions the weekend of May 5, 2023. The festivities began with a luncheon that included both alums and the Class of 2023. It was followed by an awards assembly featuring a panel discussion with the 2023 Alumnae Award recipients, Dr. Florencia Greer Polite ’93 (The Baldwin School Alumnae Award), Rachel Gerstenhaber Stern ’83 (Award for Lifetime Achievement) and Ricki Weisberg ’98 (Distinguished Young Alumna) moderated by Megan Adelman ’23 and Ryan Shelton ’23.

Community Dinner and Auction A Top Gun Farewell Baldwin flew into the “danger zone” on March 18, 2023 with a Top Gun Farewell to Baldwin’s 8th Head of School Dr. Marisa Porges ’96! The annual community dinner and auction included an exciting live auction, a successful silent auction, a delicious dinner and lots of dancing to end the night. Led by co-chairs Teresa and Fred DiBona (P ’34), it was a successful night in support of The Baldwin Fund! The event also served as a farewell to Dr. Marisa Porges ’96, who completed her tenure as Baldwin’s first alumnae Head of School in June 2023. The event raised over $300,000 to support Baldwin. Thank you to everyone that attended.

True Blue for Baldwin 2023 In March, our community showed how True Blue for Baldwin they were by helping us exceed our exciting goal for our annual True Blue for Baldwin day of giving. Alumna, parents, friends, faculty and staff came together to make the day a success with over 300 donors contributing over $60,000 to support The Baldwin Fund and the special Baldwin Archives Fund. Following along through social media posts and updates, our community helped us complete donor challenges and matches as we worked towards our goal over a 24-hour period. We are so grateful for all who participated and helped make it such a fun and successful day for Baldwin!

Dr. Marisa Porges ’96 , Baldwin’s 8th Head of School, had a vision for the School’s iconic Residence and how it should be used to the benefit of our students, faculty and staff. During her tenure here, renovations took place on the third floor - transforming the space from administrative offices to our Middle School - and redesigning the Assembly Room into the Baldwin Commons. The final piece was to create space for the Baldwin Archives where they could be accessible and preserved while providing students and the community space to interact with them. As a way to honor Dr. Porges’ tenure, The Baldwin Archives project was created in her honor to renovate space on the third floor of the Residence. The space will be designed to preserve the items in Baldwin’s archives that include documents from the School’s earliest days to class rings and blazers. Students and faculty will be able to access the archives for class projects and work with them in the newly created reading and conference rooms. The space will also provide a gathering place for alums who find themselves back on campus. The Archives will be an amazing addition to the spaces our students will have access to during their time at Baldwin and beyond. The archived items provide historical importance to our School as they allow us to examine where we have been and chart a course for where we are going.

Thank you to all the alums, parents, and friends who have made a gift in support of The Baldwin Archives Project.
