T

he Beat Rock Fest is on again this week April 8 and this edition we’ll be rockin’ it up at Eastern Promise in Kemang with three totally cool bands; some new, some with new albums under their arms and some just loving the new TBRF digs. We hope to see you there and you can find out who is playing inside this week’s beat jak. We also have all the juice on the major gigs in town in the What’s On and Herenow sections, plus plenty more stuff to chew on inside this little magazine.

The Beat Magazine is Bali and Jakarta’s entertainment gigguide. We are an independent publication and our aim is to entertain and guide you thru the nightlife and more of Bali and Jakarta.

Stereocase

Blowfish wed 7, 14, 21 april 8Pm

Have Been Stereocase were formed by Fadli (Vocalist) and Rifqi (Drums) back in 2008. They both wanted to form a band that could combine a wide variety of music genres such as Jazz, Rock, Funk and Pop into a musical cauldron. With the addition of Doni Garna (Bass) and Richard Emanuel (Guitar/ Vocals) the band was complete. The music they play is inspired by big name bands and artists such as Incubus, Jamiroquai, John Mayer, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others. Their biggest achievement to date is entering the top 30 bands to perform at the LA Lights Indiefest in 2008, representing Jakarta. Are Now Performing from stage to stage, they have now been given the chance to perform in the event ‘Wanna Be A Gang Band?’, held every Wednesday night at Blowfish. Before resident DJ Ww heads up on stage, Stereocase will warm up the crowd withtheir brand of alternate sounds.

The Beat Rock Fest eastern promise thu 8 apr 9Pm

MORFEM

MONKEY TO MILLIONAIRE

SAJAMA CUT

MORFEM Founded in July 2009; this Jakarta band actually isn’t a new comer at all. The vocalist, Jimi Multazham, for instance, is also the singer of The Upstairs. Pandu Fathoni, plays guitar for The Porno. Bramasta Juan Sasongko, bass, has this other band, JARB. While the drummer, Alexander Warnerin, built his reputation via the outfit Nervous Breakdown. As Morfem released their first single, Gadis Suku Pedalaman, in February, 2010; they started to get major attention from the indie scene.

026 | beatmag.com

The Beat Rock Fest [TBRF] continues at Eastern Promise this week, Thursday April 8 with more outstanding original rockers plying their trade to their adoring fans. TBRF is a platform for new, upcoming bands, (and some already well known outfits) to show the public if they have what it takes to reach the top. Namely, talent! And there’s plenty of that at your local TBRF. 30k gets you a beer at the entrance. MONKEY TO MILLIONAIRE The song, Rules and Policy, which was positioned as the first track on the compilation album, LA Lights Indiefest II (2007), was their major breakthrough. A year after that, Wisnu Brahmana, Agan Sudrajat and Emir Karshadi released Merah for free via internet and made quite an impressive record: 8000 downloads in 3 months. In 2009 they finally published their full album Lantai Merah. This album was honored as one of the best albums of 2009.

SAJAMA CUT In the independent scene, some consider them as veterans. Born and raised in Jakarta, they released their debut album, Apologia, in 2002. Marcel Thee, the band’s main man, and his friends, started their first huge buzz in 2005 via their single, Less Afraid, which was included in the OST Janji Joni. Even better than that, The Osaka Journals, their second album, was awarded number 1 of the best 5 albums of the decade. They plan to release their third studio album entitled Manimal in April 2010. The Ecstasy of Singing

By Erza S.T.

S

atisfaction may come in many different ways and for some it comes in the form of singing. Of course not many of us are born with the talent to sing, however it doesn’t mean you cannot find satisfaction from singing. Some people take singing seriously and have really achieved “Sanguinis Choraliensis” the ultimate satisfaction of singing in a group or choir. The Batavia Madrigal Singers under conductor Avip Priatna take singing very seriously and they share their satisfying achievements in a concert series called “Sanguinis Choraliensis 2010”. Since the initial concert series last year, Batavia Madrigal Singers (known as BMS) continue this concert series annually by presenting rich choral repertoires from Renaissance sacred chants to modern secular songs and even some pop and folk songs as part of their performance. As one of the most renowned choirs in Indonesia, BMS is stepping up the challenge by performing more elaborate repertoires and this is something that we actually now expect from them. Since their first debut in 1997, Batavia Madrigal Singers under the direction of Avip Priatna have been showing us their high quality of performance by choosing programs from German lieder to oratorio and even operatic music. I also believe that if there is a vocal ensemble or choir who are actually able to achieve this sanguinis choraliensis in Indonesia then it must be the Batavia Madrigal Singers. Why? Because they are successfully showing to the world not only the beauty of the voice but also the ultimate enjoyment of singing. Their collection of prestigious awards from around the world choir competitions is solid proof to that.

048 | beatmag.com

Throughout this concert series, BMS aim to show the audience the richness of choral music. For this year, Sanguinis Choraliensis 2010, they have carefully chosen interesting programs starting from serious music such as sacred polyphony compositions from the Renaissance and Baroque era, to romantic and contemporary sounds from modern times. BMS will continue the second half of the concert with a performance ranging from elegant classic polyphony to aggressive modern styles, rich in colors, such as some folk song compositions by Donald Patriguin, Michael McGlynn and Sam Pottle. This interesting concert will take place at the newly built Aula Sinfonia in the Kemayoran area and it would be a great way to taste the acoustic perfection inside this concert hall. It is definitely a concert not to be missed. Aside from this exciting event, I also found out about two upcoming edutainment activities in Salihara for those of you who are interested to get to know more on classical music. Still part of their Music Forum (from classic to contemporary) – FM KlaKon program, this time the speaker Slamet Abdul Sjukur will bring you closer to musical instruments by choosing Camille Saint-Saens famous composition: “Carnaval des Animaux” (Carnival of the Animal). Along with this, Slamet plans to end these edutainment programs with a discussion on a young person’s guide to the orchestra by using Benjamin Britten’s composition, one week after the introduction to musical instruments. If you are curious on how an orchestra works and would like a deeper understanding of classical music then we highly recommend you to participate in these programs at Salihara. Bring your children, as this will be good for them too. ari sedemikian padat populasi penggiat Indie, yang berhak mendapat atensi gigantik, menurut saya, cuma sejumput.

[RUDOLF DETHU] Sajama Cut is one of a few independent bands that stand out in Jakarta. Creating a huge buzz in Indonesia’s music scene in 2005, their second album, The Osaka Journals was awarded as 1 of the 5 of the best albums of the decade. Check them out at The Beat Rock Fest on April 8, 2010; at Eastern Promise, Kemang.

SLUMMONKEY MILLIONAIRE

K

Dua tembang utamanya, Replika dan Strange is the Song in Our Conversation, menduduki peringkat bergengsi di banyak radio-radio di Nusantara di antaranya 99ers (Bandung & Jakarta), Istara (Surabaya), Cassanova (Bali), dll. Beberapa hari silam mereka baru saja sukses menyelesaikan konser di beberapa kota besar di Jawa. Dan hari Kamis, 8 April 2010, mendatang mereka akan tampil di The Beat Rock Fest # 2, di Eastern Promise, Kemang; bersama Morfem dan Sajama Cut. [RUDOLF DETHU]

Monkey to Millionaire are arguably one of today’s best Indonesian Indie bands. Whether it is the atmospheric nuance of 1980s Goth bands, or the rebellious attitude of 1970s punk groups; current bands look towards previous generations of musicians to guide their aural endeavors. But what happens when there is no musical era left to revive? From the 1950s Rock’n’Roll to the 1990s “grunge” craze, it looks like artists might have to start taking their cues from elsewhere. Maybe from video games? At first glance, video games seem to

incorporate different values than that of music. After all, videogames were generally associated with a more childlike and nerdish subculture; while music was something that accompanied the soul-searching teen years when being “cool” was vital. Recently, however, this notion seemed to be challenged. A new genre that is known alternatively as “8-bit” or “Chiptune” has taken over the music scene. Chiptune artists combine sounds associated with videogame consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and Sega Megadrive; most of which came out during the late 1980s -early 1990s home-oriented consoles

boom. Previously, video games were mostly played in public arcades.

“Cacat Nada” (“Melodically Pickney, and Local Drug Store.

The result is a sound that relies heavily on nostalgic aspects – especially of those born during the console’s glory days.

The internet also played a significant part in accelerating the distribution of Chiptune to Indonesia. Dimas Theodora from Local Drug Store says that, “myspace introduced many Indonesian artists to YMCK, Covox, and those popular guys”.

While international artists including Japan’s “YMCK” and America’s “Nullsleep” occupy the genre’s most popular list; Indonesia has got more than its share of Chiptune musicians. The Jakarta-based artist, Abim, is one of its forerunners. Along with his friend, Jaka Abiburda a.k.a “JW86”, he created an event called “Pesta Mikro” (“Micro Party”) in 2007, which is believed to have popularized the previously underground phenomena to the mainstream. Many local acts arose out of “Pesta Mikro” including

Handicapped”),

While a few artists—both internationally and locally—perform with their often bulky console on the stage, a few merely use software to appropriate the sound on their laptop. Still, the most popular shows tend to be the ones where the musician uses the consoles’ joystick and floor-pads to jump-around while performing. Semarang’s Rico Julian a.k.a “Hellostereo!” is one such act. He says, “I like the authenticity of it.” Rico admits to the difficulty of applying consoles on stage,

and uses the smaller Gameboy which he says is “practical.” Dimas says that using consoles is Local Drug Store’s preference specifically because of the challenges it brings. Chiptune groups also collaborate often with visual artists to enhance the nostalgic experience. Dimas say that Local Drug Store often works with “Stand by Emulator” another Chiptune group who frequently create retro-looking visuals for their peer’s show. Still, the local Chiptune scene is still in an embryonic phase, with most acts lacking originality and merely copying the sounds of more well-known groups. Abim says, “you could tell if it’s an artist from Japan, America, or anywhere else.” Rico concurs, “There is just not enough exploration with most new artists here. A lot of it is just using the sound as a gimmick.” Takeshi Yokemura from YMCK – who is knowledgeable of the International scene – says

“Many seem to be attracted to 8bit sound only through curiosity and nostalgia - we enjoy the fascinating aspect of the sound itself”. With more events following the footsteps of “Pesta Mikro”, and collectives such as “Indonesian Chiptune Community” springing up; it seems inevitable that Chiptune will become even more popular locally, and like any trend, introduce an equal amount of mediocre and brilliant artists. “But,” Abim says with positive conviction, “there’s going to be a time when the hybrid between local traditions and Chiptune is perfected.” Let’s hope when that happens Indonesia will be in equal footing in the international Chiptune scene. TAKING THE CURE WITH

SOUL FOOD & JAZZ

My best friend, who just dumped her cheating boyfriend with gusto, is now feeling the hit of being single. She has been spending many nights at the office working overtime to avoid going home early and feeling lonely, which actually worked quite well, until she heard the news that the douche bag Ex is in another relationship. Not good. So that night after hearing the news, I figured I should help out however I could, so I hopped into a taxi, picked her up at her office and ushered her over to the great jazz club I’ve been hearing so much about, Black Cat.

framed jazz musician photographs. The mood was chilled and sophisticated.

“The place is known for its soul food, New Orleans style, you’ll love it,” I said. I ordered ‘Stanley Turrentine’s Lousiana Spring Rolls’ (39K++); delicious crispy rolls filled with shrimp, chicken and vegetables, smothered with mango chutney for my appetizer and for my main course, a ‘Winston Mursalis Jambalaya’ (89K++); chicken and beef chorizo sausage, stewed in rich creole tomato sauce, served with pilaf rice and salad. My friend ordered Beef Back Ribs (189K++); 450g of I suppose the reason I took her to this place is beef ribs, bathed in a cajun barbecue sauce, served because the cool, chill-out, jazz ambience is great with creamy and buttery garlic mashed potato and to soothe the nerves, and plus, the food is truly steamed veggies. I looked at her in amazement. delicious. As we entered the room, an old swing Boy, that girl didn’t hold back on her food; she jazz tune greeted us and we were shown to the reminded me of a truck driver! I mean… a 450g dining area, which has velvet chairs and chic, glass- stack of ribs is kind of hardcore for a girl. And top tables. The walls next to us bore an array of she didn’t stop there. She ordered two desserts

for herself: the sweet and delectable ‘Mary Lou WilliamsWhite Chocolate Bread Pudding’ (39K++) and ‘Art Farmer Jazzy Strawberries’ (39K++); port wine-marinated strawberries served over vanilla ice cream and topped with whipped cream. I watched my best friend vacuum up her food down to the last crumb and couldn’t help feeling concerned. “Hey, are you okay?” I said. She alternately licked what was left on her BBQ ribs and the last dollop of whipped cream on her pudding, smacking her lips and looking at me “This is really really good!” she said. I nodded in agreement but was still concerned. She laughed. “Look, don’t worry. I know that my world is screwed up right now and I want to scream all the time. But you see this Cajun Beef Back Ribs and Bread Pudding, and this little jazz spot here? They tell me that right now at least, I am just fine.” And then she went on to finish my Jambalaya. Well, I guess she’s ok then...

SINOU AS GOOD AS IT GETS

066 | beatmag.com

I

t was Saturday afternoon, it was a bleak day and I was suffering from inspiration withdrawal. As a person who writes for a living, this is the equivalent of being paralyzed, so debilitating and uninspiring you might as well switch your profession to being an accountant. I was very much in need of something amazing that day and was moments away from giving in to the inevitable crawling up, bawling like a baby and surrendering to constructing an uninspired ‘bleak’ piece.... that is until my good friend (let’s call him Paul), whom I have a secret crush on and whose emotional stamina in listening to my whining never ceases to amaze me, called and said what’s up. After listening to a few good minutes of my whine du jour, he told me to get up, get out of my apartment and meet him up at a coffee house in Panglima Polim. And so I did. I arrived at the place called Sinou, a charming neighbourhood coffee house that is definitely

me over, “I knew you’d love it,” he grinned “The food is great too, I’ve ordered you some. Dig in.” My eyes drifted to the table. He had ordered: Cheese Stuffed Mushroom (27K++), a delectably light baked mushroom stuffed with ground beef and mozarella cheese laid over a bed of lettuce and sauteed onions, smothered in creamy lemon butter sauce and served with fried cheese; BBQ Chicken wings (31K++); Waffle Mushroom Cheese (38K++), rich and buttery cream cheese sauce poured over one big and fluffy waffle; and the refreshing Ice Green Tea Cappucino (25K++) . I dove in without question. The food was great and Sinou provides a tempting menu from snacks to full meals, ranging from pasta, oxtail soup and sandwiches to pancakes and waffles. We ordered Stacks of Coins Pancakes with Fruit Heaven (36K++) for dessert and closed it off with a Very Vanilla Latte (21K++). Paul updated me on his latest art project while I scooped three stacks

worth the drive. Upside down tea cup lighting fixtures welcomed me to its quirky and dramatic ambiance as I walked inside. The room is filled with a throbbing, glowing, welcoming kinda of vibe. The interior elements give off an air of compelling romance, artistic and eclectic; the bright red chandelier, a crooked Marlene Dietrich poster on the jaded side walls, a red table; all the various sizes, motives and styles of sofas you can think of, decorative stair railings, all combined to produce deliciously over the top decor. For a moment, I felt like I was walking into a theatre set where every corner is prepared for a drama act. It was stunningly inspiring. Paul was already there, sitting on a pastel green sofa with an antique table full of food. He waved

of coin pancakes into my mouth. “This place is awesome!” I said. He looked at me, “So you like it?” My mouth was full so I nodded in agreement. “Good. Because this is the kind of place where I take a girl if I want to impress her, you know?” I nodded .....wait..., what?! It was an absolutely enchanting evening: good food, an awesome place and a possible future romance. I mean, what more could you ask for?

stee Lauder is launching the latest fragrance, Sensuous, and it is aiming to breakdown the stereotype surrounding ‘woody’ perfumes (perfumes containing notes from woods, such as cedarwood, vetiver, sandalwood and many more) typically marketed for men. Sensuous is developed by perfumer, Annie Buzantian, and features notes of ghost lily accord, magnolia, jasmine petals, molten woods, amber, sandalwood, black pepper, juicy mandarin pulp and honey. “When creating Sensuous, we wanted to re-invent the idea of feminine woods and change the texture and sensation of woods for women.” says Karyn Khoury, Senior Vice President of Corporate Fragrance Development Worldwide, Estee Lauder Companies.

E S T E E L A U D E R SENSUOUS By Affi –Editor of fashionesedaily.com

I believe they’ve done it successfully because Sensuous has a woody accord that is fluid, warm, inviting and distinctly feminine. The opening of Sensuous is quite sweet but it settles quickly into a rich and warm honeyed amber, mixed with woods, floral and a little spice. It’s not as strong as I thought. After the middle notes appear, Sensuous just sort of stays close to my skin so it’s actually very suitable for daytime use. The lasting power is quite good, as most Lauder perfumes are. I wore it from about 9 am and only needed it to spritz again when I was heading somewhere for an afternoon meeting or dinner. If you’re not familiar with woody fragrances and think that you won’t like it, I suggest you give it a try. You might be surprised because I do think that Sensuous isn’t at all dark or ‘manly’. It’s actually quite feminine, smooth and well… sensuous, so it won’t ’scare’ people who are more familiar with floral fruity types. The ad campaign of Sensuous, shot by world renowned photographer Craig McDean, features all Estee Lauder spokesmodels: Gwyneth Paltrow, Elizabeth Hurley, Hilary Rhoda and Carolyn Murphy, each sporting a crisp white shirt and very little else. Aerin Lauder, Senior Vice President and Creative Director, Estee Lauder, said “The advertising was inspired by the belief that women at every age can be sensuous. The women in the ad project a natural, modern sensuality in their own unique way.” About the white shirts in this ad, Aerin Lauder explained “There’s a bit of mystery behind the shirt – you don’t know if it’s hers, her boyfriend’s or her husband’s.” Sensuous Eau de Parfum is available in Estee Lauder retail counters nationwide and retails for Rp. 550.000 (30 ml), Rp. 660.000 (50 ml) and Rp. 990.000 (100 ml) Also available in Satin Body Lotion and retailing for Rp. 500.000 (200 ml).

MICA

GLAMORAMA

A few weeks ago, Amica magazine celebrated its first year anniversary. Since Amica is a fashion magazine, a fashion show was obviously in order. Four designers – Kleting, Danjyo & Hiyoji, Barli Asmara, Sapto Djokokartiko, whose designs are considered what Amica women are all about, were invited to showcase their collection. I didn’t hold too many expectations about the collection as I thought they were going to bring the same things from Jakarta Fashion Week. It turned out, though, almost everything was new to my eyes and I was more than delighted. But one thing remained, these four designers have their own signature style that makes them stand out from the rest. I’ve always loved Kleting’s designs, and these were no exception. I love the color palette, the slouchy but sophisticated cutting and the elegant pick of materials. Some pieces looked so delicate, but Kleting smartly mixed them with sharp constructions like a cropped blazer and sturdy skirt so they don’t overdose you with femininity.

Black and white is still ruling the Danjyo & Hiyoji collection, part of what makes them easy to recognise. And I think it’s good that they explore more with the different kinds of cut and style instead of playing with the colors. Inspired by love, Barli designed something romantic for the ladies. Subtle gold and purple seems to be the colors of the collections, which very well interpret the feeling of love. Unlike his usual monochromatic tone, Sapto surprised us with shocking colors in architectural shapes. A bit futuristic, a lot of glitter, he brought the elements from his breathtaking kebayas into something that can be worn by non-brides. By Hanzky – Editor of fahionesedaily.com

Immortal War Text & Photos: Fonnyta Amran

S

risanti Arthouse presents a visual art solo exhibition by Fazar Roma Agung Wibisono, titled “Immortal War” featuring two dimensional artworks by this young and talented artist from Bandung. Fazar showcases 21 of his decorative style artworks which are curated by Fery Oktanio. The exhibition was opened on March 24 and officiated by Indonesian renowned artist, Tisna Sanjaya and will be closed on April 24. Fazar showcases lusty vigorous lines that are both gripping, breathtaking and slightly disturbing. There is a certain intensity, almost violent at times, that fits into his solo exhibition’ theme. There are many different focal elements that are structured in and placed onto his paintings: the whipping branches of trees juxtaposed with the the flapping of an Eagle’s wings; a human’s head seemingly detached from his body battles with the waves of scattering destruction, whirling upwards and downwards, as though an epic battle had taken place outside the canvas, and hustled inside. In many ways, Fazar’s paintings are like a maze, filled with intersections and visual codes that need to be solved by the viewers; a game of mystery if you will and a lot to take in one

viewing. His works need to be savoured slowly to find what is delicately hinted at in his blaring visual articulation. The shy and quiet Fazaar is certainly spewing out his loud voice onto his works. They are restless, agitated, outrageously colored and bold. For Fazaar, the ongoing battle within is and will always be consistently reshaped, relayered, reinterpreted and reevaluated which, in the end, immerses him to the outcome of his “immortal war”. So in the end, something will be won. “Immortal War” Visual Art Solo Exhibition is open for viewing until April 24 at Srisasanti Arthouse, Jl. Kemang Raya no. 81, Jakarta. Tel (021) 719 3954.

Jangan lewatkan “Date Night” dan “The Lovely Bones” di semua bioskop, dan “[REC] 2” khusus di Blitzmegaplex saja. www.21cineplex.com, www.blitzmegaplex.com. ve handojo is a screenplay writer and the TBJ film critic.

Date Night Comedy, Action. Director: Shawn Levy. Writers: Josh Klausner. Cast: Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mark Wahlberg, Taraji P. Henson, Mark Ruffalo.

D

ua orang paling kocak dari Hollywood – Steve Carell dan Tina Fey – di”kawin”kan dalam sebuah film garapan Shawn Levy yang sudah berhasil mengocok perut kita lewat film-film “The Pink Panther”, “Night at the Museum”, dan “Night at the Musem: Battle of the Smithsonian”.

The Lovely Bones Drama, Thriller. Director: Peter Jackson. Writers: Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson, Alice Sebold (Novel). Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon.

C

Tales from Earth, Heaven, and Hell.

O

ur funny and romantic tale from Earth is centred around Mr. & Mrs. Foster, played by two of the funniest people in Hollywood, Steve Carell and Tina Fey. ‘Date Night’ is a cross between ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ and ‘True Lies’; a bored husband and wife venture out on a dinner date and pretend to be a different couple in order to secure a table at an exclusive restaurant. Unfortunately for them, their new (mistaken) identity lands them in serious hot water with some of the most dangerous crime lords in Manhattan. In order to save themselves, they must reunite their hearts, whilst making us laugh out loud. From Heaven, Susie Salmon tells us how she was murdered at the age of fourteen by her own mild-mannered neighbour, and how she watches her family back on earth, struggling to deal with her death. Her father grows obsessed with finding and punishing the murderer, her mother tries to overcome her grief by running away and her glamorous grandmother, always fond of a drink, is left in charge. ‘The Lovely Bones’ is based on the emotional best-selling novel by Alice Sebold, and visualized by master director Peter Jackson. ‘[REC] 2’ is a direct follow-up of ‘[REC]’ – the Spanish thriller that was remade by Hollywood as ‘Quarantine’. A second special team – after the first was totally destroyed by humans-turned-monsters – is sent to enter the quarantined apartment building, only to find out that the cause of the horrible sickness was more than just some deadly virus. One Hell of a horror. Catch ‘Date Night’ and ‘The Lovely Bones’ in all major theaters, while ‘[REC] 2’ will only play in Blitzmegaplex. www.21cineplex.com, www.blitzmegaplex.com

Peaches Gender grinding the norm Merrill Nisker has been brazenly invading stages with her brand of electroclash music and ‘in your face’ vocals for over 15 years. After releasing her debut album ‘Fancypants Hoodlum’ under her own name in ’95, she switched to the pseudonym Peaches and has since released four more socialboundary shattering albums and toured the globe with various band line-ups. Bent on bringing sexual issues to the spotlight through provocative lyrics and wild performances, her fame has gained much weight for blurring the distinction between genders and her skills as a singer, songwriter and producer have continued to push her forward. Based in Berlin, The Beat struck a chord before she headed in the direction of Bali… 088 | beatmag.com

As you’ve taken your live show across the globe, have you felt the need to downsize or hold back on any performance content to any degree, due to local culture, beliefs or opinion? I guess this will be the big test because I hope to keep the show as it is. Have there ever been any moments where legalities have stepped in or local reactions have deterred an event? Ever been pulled off stage for indecent exposure? An accompanied minor’s mother ever managed to slice through the house electrics with a crucifix in protest? Local police chief ever felt threatened because he questioned his own sexuality unexpectedly?

c. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemi I admire the band MEN. This is the new band of JD Samson from Le Tigre. I think the sound is fresh and their approach to music and performance will rule the world! Anywhere in the world you’ve found an unexpected level of support for your work? Well, I just went to Iceland at the weekend with the solo show and they sure flipped out! Ha, great phrasing of the question but I do want to say that I have never indecently exposed myself on stage. I do wear pink and nude color tights so I guess with some pink lights someone could believe I’m nude but I have never been so on stage and it amazes me that people claim they have seen this. I used to wear a dildo for the song ‘Shake Yer Dix’ and once in LA they thought about reporting me, probably for the reasons you mentioned, or they wished they had a dildo like my red leather one. Ha ha! Provoking people to question their own beliefs is obviously something you like to push. Was there a point in your life when this was a struggle for you personally? Were there any discernable moments in your life where your own desire for acceptance or self-confidence led you to challenge others in finding their own? I think it’s made me the confident person I am. It’s important to question authorities and roles placed upon oneself. It is essential for growth. When I provoke I do it from an honest place and add humor to ease any discomfort. Some people are afraid of this and those are the people who find what I do offensive. It’s their own fear. Was your initial upbringing one that encouraged open thought and free communication or was it something you had to push for? I grew up in the 70s and it was a pretty open, loving, non-political, caring family.

With five albums behind you, are there any new directions you would like to take yourself that you would see as challenging? Well right now I am performing Jesus Christ Superstar (Peaches Christ Superstar) as a one-woman show at a theatre in Berlin. It is very challenging to do a 90 minute rock opera alone! As a self-confessed control freak, who has managed to unexpectedly influence you in a positive way over the course of your career, both musically and personally? That’s a big long question and an interview in itself! If you could meet anyone from the past, present or future, who would it be and what would you ask them? I would have loved to meet Wendy O’Williams who was a fantastic groundbreaking female performer from 1978 to 1988. I would love to discuss all the controversy she experienced. She is not with us anymore so R.I.P. What can we expect to be hit with when you take to the stage at SOS? Full-out energy, feel good release! Latest message you’d like to scream into the ears of the masses? DO IT!

Ever had your parents attend a show? Reactions? My parents are huge supporters of my work and come to my shows when they can. Who do you admire as an artist or person in power that is currently breaking social boundaries with positive intent?

Peaches will strut her stuff with a solo show on guitar, synth and vocals at SOS on Thursday, April 15, 9pm. Get in the ring… beatmag.com | 089
