ight now Jakarta can be seen as a magnet for the stars with its ability to attract anything from international artists to heavenly objects like meteors that have landed in the outskirts of the city. Falling stars, or those within our orbit, are ready to shine on the stages of Jakarta. For example Sundaze with its “Metro” theme, a very long awaited event in a location that was unused due to last year’s bomb incident. Prepare your summer clothes and catch a glimpse of Kyoto Jazz Massive, Terry Hunter and Lisa Shaw. Still related to outdoor events is the highly anticipated Gatecrasher Global Soundsystem event. For the lineup of other spectacular events, as usual, check out the What’s On and HereNow sections for more info. If you happen to be seeking a more intimate club experience, why not head down to Blowfish which will soon be reopening its doors after its renovation. Just choose your destination and head on out to your desired spot. Jakarta is always filled with surprises. Meanwhile, if you are in Bali next long weekend May 28 make sure you get to our 10th Anniversary Party on the beach at Oceans 27. You are all invited. Jakarta selalu penuh kejutan!

Schizo
Red Square Wednesday 19 May 10pm
Has Been Only learning to DJ a year ago is no indicator of the quality of Schizo’s performance. His deep passion for music and determination to enrich his skills has immediately pushed him into a serious position. Having tried a vast array of music from RnB, Slow Jamz, Hip Hop, and Reggaeton to Eclectic and even Club Tracks, his skills have led him to perform at numerous big clubs in Indonesia. His outstanding quality was a surefire path to working with artists such as Yacko, Soul Id, Native, Neo, and Sweet Martabak, who always have him along on their tours. Because of his high quality beats, X2 club in Jakarta has made Schizo a resident at Equinox. He has also successfully released a nonstop Hip Hop mixed compilation album, titled ‘Invasion’. is Now Schizo will now be performing at the regular ‘Urban Episodes’ event. Has Been Walaupun hanya dibekali ilmu DJ yang dipelajari selama setahun, bukan berarti kualitas skill Schizo dibawah ratarata. And Summertime Music Continues… By Erza S.T.

ummertime is popular around the world for outdoor classical concerts. Recently in Singapore, I had the opportunity to witness Andrea Bocelli’s private performance in an outdoor setting for the YTL Corporation Anniversary. Together with an ensemble of wellknown international artists, such as soprano Sabrina Cvilak, conductor Eugen Kohn, Australian pop sensation Delta Goodrem and flutist Maestro Andrea Griminelli, they gave Singapore a concert to remember. VIPs from around South East Asia, including yours truly, were lucky enough to be invited and witness this once in a lifetime experience. Hopefully the rumors will come true and soon we will be able to witness Andrea Bocelli’s performance in our own country.

Back to our city, going into the middle of summertime has made Jakarta busy, playing host for many prestigious performers of both local and international calibre. On this upcoming 18th May, one of America’s renowned pianists, Steven Spooner, will finally visit Jakarta to give a recital, seminar and even a master class. He is surely one pianist that you can’t miss. Savannah Times praised him recently, saying: “American Steven Spooner had everything: polished technique, musical intelligence, innate sensitivity, and a personality that reached across the keyboard.” Not only this, he is also known as a great teacher, who has taught many young and talented pianists. From the 16th – 19th May, you can participate in his seminar on piano pedagogy with a theme of “Establishing a Daily Technical Regiment Russian-Style” and “Examining Chopin’s Aesthetic Streams: Rubinstein Vs. Cortot.” He will also conduct a master class and solo recital, where he is going to perform an intimate program from Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Liszt. For string lovers, this May will also be very special with the upcoming performance from Yayasan Musik Amadeus Indonesia under the title of “An Evening With Neo Capella Amadeus” on the 20th of May. Yayasan Musik Amadeus Indonesia is known to be the institution that produces many great Indonesian string players.
classicalMUSIC During this concert, the institution will showcase its young talents with a rather interesting program from classics such as Mozart, Vivaldi and Haydn to more contemporary compositions from Holst, Boismortier and Faure. I am actually quite curious to witness this new and fresh generation and see what it sounds like. Aside from fun and cheerful tunes, we go to a performance that has deeper meaning and intention. “A Tribute to Poland” will commemorate the national tragedy that happened there last month on April 10th. This will take place on May 25th at Erasmus Huis. You may be aware of the tragedy in Poland involving the loss of its national hero and President, as well as the first lady and some high-ranking officials in an airplane accident. The renowned Armonia Choir - together with genius 12 year-old pianist Geraldine Gillian Gani - will pay their respects in a tribute to Poland by performing all Chopin compositions for one night only. I salute them for this and look forward to this great tribute.
Guitar lovers in Jakarta can also rejoice this month as we can finally experience again a concert performance focusing only on classical guitar music. A group of senior and young, talented guitarists under the name of Opus’78 will be performing solo, duet and ensemble pieces. The concert ‘Just Guitar’ is actually a concert that they do quite regularly. May really does have a little bit for everyone including choir lovers. One university-based choir, Perbanas Institute Choir, is planning to perform a concert under the title of ‘Musicavaria’ bringing various vocal compositions from Monteverdi and Brahms to some popular, folksong and jazzy tunes. Aside from this choir, a religious-themed concert by Capella Victoria will take place on May 29th, when they will perform sacred polyphonies. ‘The Flower of All Virginity’ has been chosen as the theme of their concert, focusing on compositions by famous 16th century Catholic composer, Tomas Luis De Victoria, such as Missa Vidi Speciosam and Cantica Beatae Virginis.

Another Indonesian talent has come out of the woodwork to liven up the local Pop music scene. Rio Silaen has recently released his first self titled album under the label Demajors, consisting of 10 songs all written by himself. The tracks in this album are different from the usual Pop tracks currently filling the local radio airwaves; Rio’s tracks are mixed in with elements of Upbeat RnB, Disco, and semiclassical elements, giving an air of easy listening to several of them.

Horor bands
The local punk scene is about to get a scare. “Horror core”, a genre of punk rock that uses imageries of ghouls, ghosts, and gore, is taking the local music by the jugular. While well-known American bands such as The Misfits have long combined rock with tongue-in-cheek B-grade horror imagery, Indonesia is only beginning to get a taste for it, and has a rich mythology to draw on.
trying to inject more imagery of local ghouls into our new songs.”
Local punk gigs that used to rely solely on melodic or old-school punk bands are now more exciting, thanks to local horror punk bands and their ghoulish stage presence, which maximizes cheesy but amusing macabre imageries.
Sometimes, the music even seems to attract the ghosts themselves into the pit.
“Nothing beats our local ghosts” said Dede, the singer and creative force behind Serigala Jahanam (Bastard Wolf), a one-man band that combines heavy metal and old-school hard-core with themes of grotesque horror. Live, Dede is joined by rotating cast additional musicians from the local music scene. “They are surely much more terrifying than ghosts in Western films,” he said. “That is why we are

“If in America they have Vampira, here we have Suzzana [an iconic Indonesian actress known for her many ghoulish roles in the late ’80s and early ’90s],” Saiba said. “If in Europe they have Dracula, here we have the Kuntilanak [a longhaired female ghost].”
The guys in horror melodic punk group Kelelawar Malam (Night Bat) were playing their most energetic tune, “Pocong Berjalan” (“Walking Ghoul”) at Rossi Musik in South Jakarta in August, when without warning the sound system died, bringing the performance to a screeching halt. A pocong is one of Indonesia’s most famous ghouls — a corpse covered in a white burial shroud. “It has happened to us many, many times. And during that particular song,” said Saiba, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, adding that they always put on the best shows “when things go awry.”
feature Lyrically, both bands are more akin to each other, faithfully sticking to the darker side of things. “We want to evoke themes that terrify people, which are not necessarily limited to mystical subjects. But also things like the end of the world, death, life after death, mutants, aliens, prophecies about the end of the world and, of course, human nature, which is often the most frightening,” Saiba said. Dede said his lyrics are “bleak, dark, depressing, and chaotic, with a sprinkle of menacing humor.”
Saiba, who goes by the stage name Saiba Mencekam (Terrifying Saiba), said, “A lot of odd things occur whenever we perform that song. Believe it or not, some of our fans have reported seeing a real pocong in the audience, singing along.” Saiba chuckled. He was clearly enjoying the ghostly recollections. Either that or he was taking the piss. After all, he adds that “We conduct some dark rituals prior to gigs.” Kelelawar Malam is made up of Saiba, Apin “Doomsday” on drums, “Violent” Deta on bass and Fahri “Scary Death” on guitar.
To write such lyrics one must first get into an appropriately grim mood. Saiba said the members of Serigala Jahanam, who write the lyrics together, are at their most inspired when they isolate themselves in a dark room and start imagining slasher-flick scenarios. The band also often dims the lights in Saiba’s house and engages in morbid role-playing games, with one band member playing the role of an assailant, and the others the victims. Both groups’ live performances use elements of theater to maximize the drama. They often use fake blood or white face paint to create corpselike appearances. But neither band relies solely on shtick to impress fans. While Serigala Jahanam’s relentless loud riffs
While they do share a common theme of blood and gore, Serigala Jahanam and Kelelawar Malam are very different musically. “Black Sabbath are gods of music and The Melvins are our role models,” Dede said, listing his musical influences, which account for the band’s pounding beats and adrenaline-driven guitar riffs. Onstage, Dede and his pals deliver a breathtaking set reminiscent of old-school rock acts such as Motorhead and Slayer. “We always give our blood and soul into each show” he explains. Saiba said the original concept for Kelelawar Malam was as a cover band that would perform songs by any group American singer Glenn Danzig had been a member of, including Samhain, The Misfits and Danzig. The band’s sing-along style certainly owes a large debt to Danzig’s twisted version of punk.

and growling vocals might not be for everyone, its live energy is undeniable. Kelelawar Malam is a crowd favorite, with the charismatic Saiba consistently able to drive audiences into sing-along frenzy. Both bands have released mini-albums. Serigala Jahanam’s “Ketika Pria Memakan Wanita, Ketika Wanita Memakan Pria” (“When Men Eat Women, When Women Eat Men”) was released in 2008. The CD version was sold at shows, while a digital version was given away free through a prominent Yogyakarta-based Net-label, Yesnowave. Kelelawar Malam’s “Suzzanakenstein” was released in February. A digital version was also released through Yesnowave. “We originally intended a digital-only release, but people started asking for a physical product so we pressed a limited edition of 100, which we sold with an equally limited-print T-shirt. They sold out pretty quickly,” Saiba said. Both groups plan to continue to use horror imagery in their shows and in their lyrics, and both said they would stick to the campy local horrors of the past as a main source of inspiration, rather than the newer generation of scary movies. “Today’s horror movies rely solely on loud sound effects and supposedly stylish camera work. It ends up looking like an expensively budgeted music video with zero taste,” Saiba said. “All the shocks come from the loudness of the sound. If we turn the sound down, it pales in comparison to Suzzana’s quietly grim appearance and her large hair. What scary icons do we have that can compete with that today?”

ICEMA:
ME MI S AHKAN DIRI DARI AR U S U TA M A
Sebut saja misalnya Ras Muhamad, Goodnight Electric,
Navicula, Adrian Adioetomo, Efek Rumah Kaca, dan masih banyak lagi. Sementara itu 20 kategori yang dilombakan ialah: Favourite Solo Artists, Favourite Band, Group or Duo, Favourite Alternative Song, Favourite Pop Song, Favourite Rock Song, Favourite Metal Song, Favourite Electronica Song, Favourite Jazz Song, Favourite Hip-Hop/R&B Song, Favourite Dance Song, Favourite Punk/Hard Core Song, Favourite Emo Song, Favourite Reggae/Ska Song, Favourite Blues Song, Favopurite Comedy Song, Favourite Folk/Country Song, Favourite Singer-Songwriter, Favourite World Music Song, Favourite Artwork from Album, Favourite Album Packaging. [RUDOLF DETHU]
ICEMA stands for Indonesia Cutting Edge Music Award. The concept is quite similar to the LA Lights Indiefest, which accommodates the non-mainstream side of music. The difference is LA Lights Indiefest focuses more on new bands whereas ICEMA gives more attention to independent bands, who have slowly built their reputation in the independent music scene. In ICEMA you’ll find names such as Ras Muhamad, Goodnight Electric, Navicula, Efek Rumah Kaca, Adrian Adioetomo and many more, being nominated in specific categories.
Nowadays, there are many DJ schools across Jakarta, from tiny little spaces that have been turned into mini studios, to fancy spots in big malls. But something new is hitting the town for sure. They call it ‘Red Addict DJ/EO Management & DJ School’ which is under Red Square Management. It came about from the constant demand from Red Square’s visitors for new DJs, and they are now committed to meeting the high expectations of the party-going crowd. But what’s so special about them? Well, the main advantage for the students is that the class takes place inside the actual club at Red Square. This gives the newbies a real taste of how to control the mood in the club straight from the DJ booth! Five of Red Square’s resident DJs from various genres of dance music are acting as instructors: DJ Larry Satrio, Ruffie, Iwel, Reza Bukan, and Ricky Chattaway. All students have to do is make a choice of style & genre, from Classic Disco-House-Techno-Progressive, to RnB-Hip Hop. Over a three-month period, students will learn basic techniques; after this is the time to pick up some remix skills etc. Red Addict DJ/EO Management is also ready with exciting concepts like opportunities to do Live PA with other musical instrument collaborations, and even a back-to-back female and male DJ set. Right now, the crew and management include the residents along with DJ Babydrie, Rini and Byanca. Call up Byanca at 0856 787 1405, or just hit Red Square Jakarta for details.

The Beat Jakarta’s Fonnyta explores her Starbucksuality, and finds the coffee superbrand confusingly hard to hate‌
Coffee Talk 064 | beatmag.com
I
love coming to Starbucks. Really. I like the combination of frills it offers; from the impressively decorated coffee treats to the matte-colored atmosphere, the big writing boards behind the counter and the big comfortable sofas. The bluesy music in the background and the smiling green-apron-wearing baristas are what give the dot to the i and cross to the t. Friendly and comforting? That’s an understatement. I’d say it is more like a cult. It has that compelling power, a sort of inspirationinducing atmosphere that makes you feel like you are in New York or something. I genuinely think this is the reason why Starbucks has gained so much success globally. That universal likeability. I remember those days when I just started freelance writing and did not have any internet connection and was always in dire need of a coffee fix to start my writing, or else I would draw a blank and write nonsense. I always ended up choosing Starbucks as my “go to” place for some reason. I didn’t care so much for the price tag nor the gorgeously decorated coffee, but I liked the sense it gave me – like I could suddenly write a masterpiece or something. The coffee? Well, to be honest, that’s another matter. It has its followers – don’t get me wrong. Legions of followers. I may even be one of them, although selectively and discreetly. But what I like about this place lies in the way it adapts the so-called ‘classic’ way to appreciate coffee, and wrestles it down to commercialism and
succeeds at doing it. We have the Americans to thank for that. Now, those who sneer at the very thought of blended ice coffee can be seen lurking discreetly, sipping that very concept– and actually appearing to enjoy it. And we have Starbucks to thank for that. Nowadays, I think it all comes down to variety. And taste. We have so little time to dissect anything down to its very essence and have made a habit of looking for an instant fix – preferably one that looks as good as it is instant. I am, for one, unable to deny the wonderfully mountainous, soft, swirly whipped cream and sweet caramel in deliciouslooking icy plastic cups. Especially on a hot Jakarta day. These icy drinks make the existence of a steamy and aromatic doppio espresso more and more irrelevant in Jakarta. Besides, who can remember all the rules on what to drink in what hour and how to do it properly? Europeans love this gimmick - I guess because they come from a so-called more cultured place - but nowadays, who cares? Too rigid to follow, too complicated to remember and too long a time to explain. Heck, we need to get back to checking our Facebook! Make it simple, fast and pretty, I’d say – if it wants to survive in the mind of the short attention span generation. This generation avoids rules like a disease and loves anything flashy. Hail to the Iced Blended Choc Chip coffee, for milking the opportunity. Crass commercialism? Who cares? Fact is, we’re all now hooked and high on caffeine. T
he Kitchenette is a new restaurant opened by the kings of Jakarta concept-dining, the Ismaya group and this one is another fine example of their pedigree. “Everything your Heart Desires” could be the tag-line of Kitchenette, as the menu is plastered with tags of ‘Everything’ from salads, tapas, mains and especially their hotlist, blackboard specials menu, also appropriately named ‘Everything Special’ or something similar. It’s fast and easy at Kitchenette with snappy service and a menu to suit. The restaurant is set in what resembles a French kitchen with pots and pans hanging from hooks, cabinets full of goodies and the timber look of a rambling country kitchen pervading the home-style ambience. A home-style look demands home-style fare and Kitchenette appears to be delivering just that. Savory Galettes and Sweet Crepes are the specialties of the house and half of the menu is dedicated to them. With names like Gusteau and Antoine-Ego gracing the Galette list, one could imagine that Ratatouille would also be on the menu, but at last look, it wasn’t. The French-style Galette is made from buckwheat flour, all natural ingredients and as they say, a large dash of love, with a choice of many toppings from which to choose. The Galette could be called a cross between a pizza and a crepe for anyone unaware of how it looks. Other savory dishes on the menu include a bunch of classic salads and a ‘build your own fresh salad from the bar’ option. The ‘Everything to Share’ section contains a selection of tapas and sharing dishes like Vietnamese rolls [39k], Charcoal grilled marinated octopus with potato salad [45k], Calamari fritti [45k] and Nachos [45k]. ‘Everything Mains’ is also bursting with Grandma’s favorites too, with a mix of Western and Asian dishes. Rib eye steak [125k], pan fried John Dory fish over
sauteed spinach [59k], Roasted chicken [75k] and Burgers [69k] are all there and backed up by Uncle Chin’s Asian recipes and Grandpa Luigi’s classic and rustic pastas. The size and quality of everything served at Kitchenette is substantial and value for money does look assured. Kitchenette is sited in a part of the new Plaza Indonesia Extension that is fast becoming the new place to dine in the mall and for that matter, the city. With the adjacent office block and general traffic from the mall, Kitchenette is bound to be a very busy kitchen over the next period. With the bustling crowd and the fast moving action of Kitchenette, you could just about find ‘Everything You Need!’ [Text: Trauts, Photos: Ramadhan]

Here Comes the Blockbuster Season!
S
etelah “Iron-Man 2” membuka musim film-film blockbuster, sekarang giliran Russell Crowe main panah-panahan di “Robin Hood”, Mike Myers jadi ogre di “Shrek Forever After”, dan Jake Gyllenhaal jadi Pangeran Persia. Siapkan blitzCard supaya tidak mengantri panjangpanjang! Cek jadwalnya, dan pesan tiketnya di www.blitzmegaplex.com. In the wake of ‘Iron-Man 2, more blockbusters are coming to our big screens! From Russell Crow shooting arrows in “Robin Hood”, Mike Myers returns (his voice anyway) in “Shrek Forever After, and pretty boy tries to pass as a Persian prince in Disney’s latest epic flick. Order your tickets from www.blitzmegaplex.com.
Robin Hood Action. Drama. Director: Ridley Scott. Writer: Brian Helgeland. Cast: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Max von Sydow, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Danny Huston. Tapi, berhubung ini kerja samanya yang kesekian kali dengan Ridley Scott – setelah “Gladiator”, “A Good Year”, “American Gangster”, dan “Body of Lies” – jadi, ya sudahlah, mari kita tonton saja. Apalagi deretan pemainnya menunjukkan nama-nama kelas berat! Dasar ceritanya masih sama. Prepare to get bloated with caramel popcorn as you try very hard to believe that Robin Hood is 41-year old Russell Crowe in the latest Ridley Scott film, ‘Robin Hood’. While Crowe needs to toughen up his look, scriptwriter Brian Helgeland’s difficult task is to buff up the story. The good thing is, names like Cate Blanchett, Max von Sydow, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac and Danny Huston are involved.
Shrek: Forever After Animation. Comedy. Director: Mike Mitchell. Writer: Josh Klausner, Darren Lemke. Cast: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews, John Cleese, Craig Robinson.
Following Robin Hood, you also have to accept the fact that Puss in Boots is now an obese feline in ‘Shrek: Forever After’. Even worse: obese in 3D! This twisted fact is the result of Shrek’s pact with Rumpelstiltskin, which also involves him losing Princess Fiona and the hunting of the ogre species. Hard to believe? Here’s one more:
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Action. Adventure. Director: Mike Newell. Writers: Boaz Yakin, Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard. Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Aterton, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina. Tentunya, Jake mesti menggagahkan badannya dulu. Siap-siap dibikin bingung! Harapan terbesar ada di tangan Mike Newell, sang sutradara yang berhasil membuat “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” jadi layak ditonton.
Sweet boy Jake Gyllenhaal is Persian, and a Prince. Yes, that’s Jerry Bruckheimer’s idea of another franchise start-up: ‘Prince of Persia: Sands of Time’, based on the video game of the same name. The Prince’s mission is to team up with Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) – a Persian who speaks fluent, noble British English – to hold back a sandstorm and put all that sand inside an hourglass, using the magic Dagger of Time, which can control, well… time. Welcome to Hollywood!

Inside
The
Chanel Barn
I
was so excited when I stepped inside the Bali room of Kempinski Hotel for the Chanel fashion show. Why? Because in front of me, I saw a huge barn with hay everywhere, just like the set they had at the Paris fashion show. Wow. Granted, it was much smaller and minus Lily Allen, but everything else remained the same. I’d seen the clothes on Style.com so it was nice
to see them live. The clothes, of course, were nothing you would wear anywhere near a farm. Except maybe for the wooden clog shoes and the straw bag. Oh, and there was one look where the model wore highwaisted pants with boots; that’s as close as it got to ‘farm chic’. The rest of the clothes were lovely. They were surprisingly, luxuriously understated – a far cry from the unapproachable vibe usually associated with Chanel. Or was it just the barn setting that transformed their image into something more modest and down to earth? By Hanzky www.fashionesedaily.com Style & Beauty with Attitude
Dreamy & Delicate Collection from Valentino
S
tunning red, beautifully crafted, Oscar-ready gowns is what comes to mind whenever I think about Valentino. Now that it’s under the the guidance of new designers, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Picciol, it has a more youthful vibe: still feminine and elegant but a lot more flirtatious with higher hemlines and sheer chiffon. It was a Spring/Summer 2010 collection being shown at Plaza Indonesia at the end of April, but the color theme was nothing vibrant - it was more in a nude and soft color spectrum. But the feminine ruffles, the sheer fabric and the flowing drapery gave it the Spring feeling. In short, it was a beautiful collection, one that you will immediately reach for when you need an extra dose of femininity injected into your day. PERIMETER DESIGN/ART EXHIBITION
O
ne must admit that the separating screens between art, craft, design, and architecture have become increasingly blurred. Crossborder attempts become an intriguing challenge and adventure for the artists, designers and architects. In Indonesia, efforts to go across the boundaries and hold collaborations between the different disciplines have been minimal. What Perimeter is doing today is an effort to encourage and facilitate cross-border collaborations among artists, designers and architects. Perimeter’s first project involves prominent artist Agus Suwage, who was invited to design a range of

products (t-shirts, jewelry, buckles, ceramic money boxes and belts). In this project, Agus Suwage also worked on existing items such as scooters, electric guitars and jackets, applying his characteristic signature to these products. Perimeter also invited a young designer with increasing prominence: Alvin Tjitrowirjo, who presents his rattan bench, titled Linger Bench, produced only in twelve units. Kika, a bag and jewelry designer from Yogyakarta, presents oneof-a-kind jewelry pieces that possess strong aesthetic qualities and Sutra (freshly graduated from Bandung Institute of Technology) presents

unique and functional one-of-a kind handmade products such as notebooks and storage boxes. Perimeter serves as a medium that encourages the collaboration, alliance and cross-border relationships between art, craft, design and architecture. Admittedly, this will not be an easy task, but the challene will be worth it. The experimental project exhibition ‘Perimeter: DesignArt’ is open for viewing this month until July 2010, every day from 11am - 7pm at Perimeter Gallery, Kemang Icon 1st floor, Jl. Kemang Raya no. 1 Jakarta. Tel. (021) 718 0719.

RACHEL IBRAHIM: IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT ART
Rachel, could you tell us about your background in the art industry?
Last April, Rachel Ibrahim launched the KIAS/ PERIMETER Gallery, located in the Kemang Icon, creating a myriad of opportunities for Jakartans to enjoy Indonesia's incredible talents in the arts. The Beat Jakarta had the opportunity to speak with the lovely Ms. Ibrahim about her goals for the gallery and her thoughts on Jakarta's art scene. 080 | beatmag.com
I don’t have any background related to art, academically. My educational background is finance. But my love for art transcends everything. My finance background has played an important role in opening up the gallery though. It is not only about art, it is business too. What propels the decision of opening up a gallery? As I see it, this is a very big and unique opportunity to be able to manage two major aspects of an art gallery, which are the artists and the collectors. It is satisfying to be able to fulfill both their needs.
Photos of Rachel Ibrahim at various exhibitions at the Kias/ Perimeter gallery.
Does KIAS/Perimeter specialize in a certain style of art? KIAS and Perimeter is just like any other gallery that exhibits artworks from many talented artists. But specifically for Perimeter, we provide space as a showroom for artists to experiment and create collectible products using their own designs. What would be your personal goal for KIAS/ Perimeter? To be the best in the industry. Do you have any personal preference when choosing certain art styles to be exhibited in your gallery? We prefer to collaborate with the best artists out there (smiling), this is not to say that there is no opportunity for emerging artists to exhibit their works here, but of course they need to be able to display the best of their talents and abilities. How many exhibitions are scheduled in KIAS/ Perimeter in 2010? We have one current exhibition and two others planned for 2010.
What do you think of Jakarta’s appreciation of art? Has there been any increased levels of interest? From what I can see, Jakarta is not really different from any other big cosmopolitan cities in the world. People are starting to be more critical and informed when it comes to art. They are aware of what they want and what they don’t want and this is a good indication. The art communities in Jakarta have grown and are now more aware and informed, therefore becoming part of the art movement itself. Any interesting projects coming up? We have set a plan this year to exhibit an extraordinary project and I can assure you that these projects will be the best. You should come and see for yourself!
KIAS/Perimeter is located at Jl. Kemang Raya No. 1 Jakarta 12130. Tel (021) 718 0719; email: kias.admin@gmail.com Opening hours: Daily 11 am – 7 pm (public holidays by appointment only).

They’ve been around since the mid 90’s and they’re still going strong today with their new traditionalist’s imagery, heavy on the 70’s side. 2009 saw the release of their last album The Night at Schouwburg and this year the plan is underway to get Planet Cinta onto the shelves. The Beat talked with Jarwo and Emil about their upcoming album, Indonesia’s music today, and their thoughts on lip-syncing…

Pa r t y . Th e B eat Pa r t y . The B e at Pa r t y . Th e B e at Pa r t y . The B eat Par t y . The B eat Par t y . The Ok, let’s start with your upcoming album, Planet Cinta. We’ve seen “coming soon 2010” on your website for quite a while now. Do you already have an exact date when it’s going to be released? What took you so long? Jarwo: No exact date yet. The album has needed longer to be prepared than we arranged, the music master is done, but things are more complicated than just the master itself, because we decided to do everything ourselves. We need to prepare other things too, album cover, video clip, marketing schedule etc. Emil: We’re pretty sure that the album will be released sometime this year, haha... We have to finish the artwork, then duplicating, printing and then, since we’re managing ourselves and we’re building our own record label, we have to find a distributor to become our partner. So it’s a lot of homework to do… The album is going to be titled “Planet Cinta”; does it mean you are going to focus on love, nothing but love? Jarwo: It’s all about love, but not all of the songs are “ordinary love songs”. Love is the strongest theme written into the songs and we think it’s ok for us to write a whole album as a love song. In fact, there is a little compromising between our pure idealism with what people like to listen to… Just one question, are we prepared for NAIF love songs? Hehe… Will you release the album online or on CD? What are your reasons behind the decision? Jarwo: First on CD only, next, we never know, could be anything. I’m wondering about it myself… hahaha… Emil: We will release the album physically and digitally (of course). It’s a common way, we’re thinking of other ways to sell the album, maybe in some other package, but actually we don’t put high expectations on selling the album nowadays. This album is just a ‘statement’ that we’re still producing. It’s a fun thing to do in our lives.
things go wherever they run. Today’s music (large and commercial) is like 80% directed by listeners and by people who want big money from it… For people other than them, there is still no direction. Emil: Music is just music. I don’t really care about direction. People listen to different kinds of music depending on how they got their ‘education/ appreciation, environment/ habit, emotional equation, spiritual equation, so, it really is different, one from the other. It’s all mixed up beautifully. For example, you’ll get some brainiac who works as a high level executive for an international company who likes to listen to dangdut music or some poor homeless murderer who listens to jazz music. There will be music with a strong character, and then mainstream music (which is very common in all countries in the world). The music industry, local, national, and global, is having a very difficult time right now. Most people believe the biggest problems are piracy and illegal downloads. Of course this will affect your income. Does playing many concerts and selling merchandise help? Jarwo: We’ve been looking for an income source outside of selling physical music for a long time. The big useful part of releasing an album is to maintain our existence so people keep coming to our shows, which is where we get our income mostly. I think the music industry will keep on going, but in different new ways, not like before. Emil: Performing is the best. We already released our live recording album, The Night at Schouwburg, limited edition. That’s a fun thing to do too. Last question, there’s a big debate about lip-syncing. Lots—if not all—of TV music programs in Indonesia are in this format. Are Naif ok doing lip-syncs?
And, jumping to another topic, tell us what you think about Indonesian music today. Is it going in a better direction, worse direction, or ahem, no direction at all? Why?
Jarwo: I don’t know about lip-syncing, we’re just doing minus-one. Doing it is having fun… haha… TV is not all about live performance, it’s more about appearance. There are no laws. Being a performer means you have to make the effect to people who watch you however you do it, including ‘act as if it’s real’. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. Emil: Well, it’s just a technical thing with TV production. It’s ok for me.
Jarwo: In my opinion, there is no direction in Indonesian music at all. In fact, there shouldn’t be any. Music development should not be directed, let

Tell us about you musical background and what led you to the decks. Were Jazz and Funk infused into your bones as a child? Did your Dad have some decent vinyl? I was lucky to have parents who were both into music. My mother was into disco and soul and my father used to be the tour manager for a few LA rock bands in the 70’s. I can remember my Mom and I dancing to “Let’s groove” by Earth, Wind and Fire in the kitchen when I was 5. My own personal connection with music as a child started with Prince‘s album 1999 and of course Michael Jackson (R.I.P). From there I discovered early hip hop, electro and my interest just sort of grew. As a teenager I was really into the acid jazz scene in London where I lived. There were a few key clubs that educated me on the funk and DJ’s who schooled me on the artists I was listening to. I thought this was the pinnacle of great music ….until I heard LiL Louis French Kiss on the radio. It was love at first listen. House music had arrived in my life and it has never left. Although I am a fan of all good music no matter what genre, nothing makes me feel the way a good deep house cut does. How would you define your sound as a DJ? Driving, funky, unpredictable and very energetic, even in deep sets. I like to play with different genres and challenge my own boundaries. It is very important to me to tune into the crowd’s energy and work with it to create the best possible experience for them. Just don’t ask me to play any trance, ok?
Cpen Sublime melodies and killer bass lines are this producer’s forte and he’s on board to bring the funk home to The Beat Party dance floor…

Was your debut solo EP ‘Pirate’s Life’ a long time in the making or did you lock yourself in a studio and jam it all out over a short burst of inspiration? The Pirate’s Life E.P was written in LA when I had only one keyboard, an MPC 2000 drum machine and a portable dat recorder. A friend of mine had a studio with tons of vintage gear so I took a couple of the tracks over there and played the Rhodes, moog etc. on top of the songs. For the song Third Quarter, I did some session drumming with another friend in exchange for his trumpet solo. The EP was written in about a week or so. Funny thing is that a few days after I signed the record to Seasons Recordings, my apartment burned to the ground including the gear that I used to write the tracks. A lot of precious vinyl fell victim to the flames that night.

Tell us about your collaboration with JT Donaldson; where did the friendship begin and at which point did it become a compatible production effort? I met JT in Dallas, Texas in 1995. He was working at the world famous Bill’s Records and I had just moved there from London. We were both starting out as producers; neither of us had released anything. He had a Roland 909 and a Juno 106 and so we started messing around with tracks. It didn’t take long to realize that we had strong chemistry in the studio. Before long we were releasing projects together and have been for over 12 years now. Who takes which reigns when it comes to laying down originals? Normally with us, JT handles the beats and I handle the music. This formula has proven itself time and time again. JT is great with samples, adding the odd vocal phrase here and there. What have been some of the biggest boosts to your direction over the years? Raving in the countryside of Southern England in the early 90’s. This was my official introduction to the joys of what true club experiences should be. There may have been a few illegal substances involved, I will neither confirm nor deny this … This experience has never been topped. Any negative experiences over the years that caused you to question your direction as a DJ? For many years I wasn’t DJing , just producing records. When I began to play out, I wished that I had started much earlier because it has helped me to have a better understanding of what the role of the music that I write is, on the dance floor. Which project has brought you the most satisfaction over the last couple of years and why? I would have to say the one that I am currently working on. A new LP. My first album came out in 2001 on Glasgow Underground and 9 years is too long of a break, no? It’s great to be able to get back into the lab and focus on a whole new body of work. The experiments are going well so far.
What inspired this trip to Bali and how did it affect you? This is my first trip to Bali and I am loving it here. I’m a huge fan of Babi Guling and the smiles of the locals. No one in the states can smile like that. My long time friend Willy (who was also at those infamous raves back in the day) moved out here a couple years ago and fell in love with the place. I pretty much followed his lead after hearing his reports and dragged the family out with me a couple of months ago. What do you see as the major differences between this island’s electronic scene and the club culture you’re used to back home? The main difference is that Bali is a very transient place. Tourists dominate the crowds most of the time. This makes it difficult to have a local scene. Back in Los Angeles there are club nights that have been running for years. There are local followers who create a family environment. Having said that, I have had a few great nights out so far at places like Blackstar, Ku De Ta and SOS Anantara . Musically here in Bali, it seems like the harder more pumping sound is prevalent. This is not exactly my cup of tea but I understand why it’s popular. It works particularly well if you wear a fake Bintang tank top. (hehehehe) Have you now decided to call Bali home? What has inspired this? I am going to stay till the end of the year and then decide. The reason for being here is to write music with a new frame of mind, channeling the island energy for inspiration. If moving here means only bringing three items with you, what would they be? Easy : My wife and my 2 kids . If I didn’t have a family: 3 gallons of high strength mosquito repellent. If you could meet anyone from the past, present and future, who would they be and what would you ask them? It would have to be the big man, God. I would ask him, “Why the #@$% did you create mosquitoes?”

The S.I.G.I.T
The S.I.G.I.T has been a long time in the making, as most truly competent rock and roll bands are. When it comes to looking like you don’t give a &#*@ about anything yet need to be taken seriously, you need to back it up with a pretty intense dedication to your music and these boys have certainly been doing that for some time. It was back in ’94 that Adit, Rekti, Acil and Farri began hanging out, chewing fat, jamming, writing tracks and generally annoying each other. Come 2004 and Spill Records saw the talent, releasing the bands first self titled debut mini album as they stepped up the gig accelerator. Their first single ‘Soul Sister’ got high rotation on local radio across Jakarta and Bandung and Trax magazine declared them to be “the hottest rock n roll band in town”. Since then it’s been a consistent rise in popularity and opportunity for a band that has earned its reputation through thick walls of distortion and old school blues rock riffs, live shows that scream of experience and down to earth attitudes that sit pretty with the tunes. Already having toured Australia, California and Hong Kong along with a huge opportunity to impress thousands at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Texas, The SIGIT have already been the focus of many a rock enthused crowd. With a huge fan base across Indonesia, the boys have ripped out their chords at plenty of national festivals and venues. Now they’ll be bringing the amped energy to The Beat Party’s live stage…

DJ DADE
Getting infected with house beats came at an early age for DJ Dade. With his older brother DJ Romy passing on the love along with the exploding house scene in Jakarta thanks to early underground clubs like B1 and Bengkel pushing the sounds, Dade was set to travel on one road. By 19 Dade had already joined the successful team of spinners at 1945 Music Factory and putting his talent to the decks at major clubs soon followed. Quickly loved and obviously revered, Dade was the chosen act to open for Tiesto in Jakarta where he laid down the mood for 26,000 excited dance lovers and he didn’t let them down. As the youngest DJ to win Best DJ of the Year at the Paranoia Awards in 2005, Dade has gone on to play internationally in Malaysia, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and has also put his ears to producing tracks and creating successful compilation albums. With a solid reputation for bringing a dance floor all the right sounds, Dade was an obvious choice for The Beat Party line-up.
Renowned for being an electro playground, Bali is certainly never short of a DJ stream to satisfy the thirst of the party masses. The flipside of this is finding DJ’s that truly bring a unique music choice to the dance floor with an ability to keep everyone not only moving, but seriously loving every tune. DJ Adit does just that. Hailing from Bandung, Adit pulls together a broad width of styles that stretch their influence from MGMT to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, New Order to PJ Harvey, Phoenix and beyond, from pop to electronic and everything worth playing in between. His personal touch has been quickly earning him accolades not just across Indonesia but right through Europe and Australia thanks to international touring in the recent years. DJ’s and artists like Steve Aoki, Deep Dish and Peter Hook (New Order) have all given praise to his abilities and there have been plenty of awards to back them up, including Best Rural DJ at the Paranoia Awards in 2008. Adit will be kick-starting the energy for us at The Beat Party so be there with your ears in check for a rockin’ playlist.

Parau
I
nfluenced by a number of Hardcore bands, Parau was formed back in 2002. As time progressed, the band introduced certain elements of Heavy Metal to their stage set lists and from there, they eventually transformed their style into a full Heavy Metal sound, mixed up with the varying additions of each band member’s own style. What you’ll hear now when you get in the mosh at a Parau gig is a rhythmic wall of heavy distortion and thumping double kick beats, set to get your adrenaline pumping. Parau’s heavy metal recipe consists of smart and sensitive lyrics promoting moral issues about social topics and the environment. B
anding together back in May of 2003, ‘Scared of Bums’ took their rather question-inducing name from a NOFX track as a reference to their love for both the band and the genre of punk. Starting out with a similar direction in sound, the boys moved more into what they dub ‘Metal Melodic Core’, expanding their influences over time to bands like Metallica and Sum 41. The boys got their first album wrapped up and out to the local masses in early ’07 as a self-titled record. It included 10 original tracks and one cover (Total Chaos’s ‘Riot City’). Their songwriting skills got them onto the ‘LA Lights Indie Fest 2007’ compilation album with 10 other national bands, which brought them plenty of attention and led to shows being booked across Java, including a support slot with the USA’s Simple Plan at the Senayan in Jakarta. They hope to have their second album out in late July or early August of this year, followed by a promotional tour around Indonesia and possibly Singapore and Australia depending on sponsorship. ith the band’s name coming from a lane near where the founding members lived, you could imagine these musicians were living close enough to each other to have inspired plenty of jamming. Originally hitting the scene with two vocalists under the name Buntu in 2001, there were plenty of gigs for these boys before studies and other commitments forced some line-up changes. 2005 arrived with the final incarnation of the members and with it the decision to add the Balinese word ‘De’ to the name. Inspired by the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s De Buntu have come to create their own musical concept which they refer to as FUNTHEMENTAL. Now having played at numerous venues, big events and campus events around Bali, to date they have released a mini album, four compilation albums and another full length album titled FUNTHEMENTAL.

Monkey to Millionaire
A
lternative Rock trio, Monkey to Millionaire, began jamming it out as a band back in Junior High but ended up breaking up because, in their own words they “were crap!” Maintaining their friendships and their dedication to their individual instruments eventually brought them back together though and by then the union was a worthwhile venture. 2004 saw them hit the Jakarta scene and quickly start proving themselves as an alternative

rock force to be reckoned with. The band’s name Monkey to Millionaire is a play of words from the phrase “from hero to zero”. Their self released EP in 2006 led one of their songs ‘Rules and Policies’ to be featured in the LA Lights Indiefest band competition a year later and their full-length debut album titled Lantai Merah (Red Floor) by Sinjitos Records was released in 2009.
