13 TAHUN ANUGERAH MUSIK INDONESIA D

The Grammy Awards à la Indonesia, Anugerah Musik Indonesia—better known as the AMI Awards—will be held on June 9th 2010, at JIETEX, Mangga Dua Square. This is going to be the 13th AMI Awards since the first one in 1997. This year, the awards have been divided into 35 categories. The most controversial one will go to the best Ring Back Tone, while ‘d’Masiv’ make an impressive move by being the most-nominated band in the event - receiving nominations in 4 different categories.

This is a recital that you can’t afford to miss. International artists are also coming to Jakarta for some mouth-watering performances. I am talking about the famous Sam Haywood and Damien Ventula, both world-class musicians. As a pianist, the critically acclaimed Sam Haywood has been performing as concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician for some years. He has released many CDs, done radio and television recordings, and will be touring with famous violinist, Joshua Bell, next spring. He has given many performances as a duo with cellist Damien Ventula and like Sam, Damien is known for his great sensitivity and temperament. This French cellist came from a family of musicians and started his music lessons from an early age. A sincere and passionate performer, Damien Ventula loves to share his enthusiasm and emotions when playing. In their upcoming recital in Jakarta called ‘Soiree Francaise’, these two will perform the works of French composers such as Ravel, Poulence, Chabrier, Ibert, Faure with some others like Bach. All her best vocal students will perform under this concert called ‘Senandung Batavia’ (Batavia Melody). It is definitely not to be missed. Prepare to be surprised by great new talents.

Saatnya mengatur industri, bukan diatur. 7.

After a long hiatus of 4 years after their last album, Pil Malu, /rif are back in the studio hard at work on their 7th album, simply titled ‘7’ and as the name suggests, consisting of seven new songs and one retouched old track. Scheduled to be released in a few weeks time, /rif still stick to their solid formula of Rock. The difference with their previous albums is this upcoming one won’t be as experimental as the previous. Instead, it’ll be more marketfriendly. To be precise: black market-friendly. See them live on these dates in June: 4th–7th in North Sumatra, 16th in Yogya, 18th–21st North Sumatra and the 27th in Jakarta. [RUDOLF DETHU]

WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST?

M

y friend turned pseudo boyfriend, Paul, who for the longest time had wanted me to introduce him to my foodie posse, finally had the chance to meet with my seven loud-mouthed and opinionated friends at a dinner. Although the night started rather awkwardly for him when finding out that all of them are batting for the same team, the conversation nonetheless, flowed smoothly. Until they got to talking about breakfast. “My day needs to begin admirably with steaming

I am old fashioned and I’m proud of it!” Paul chirped merrily. My foodie friend, Rudy, sneered at him and said, “Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast, my friend. I do brilliance at dinner and bitter coffee for breakfast.” “And you’re calling yourself a foodie?” Paul snapped. “With so many varieties in this city, we should all eat breakfast

Home STYLE COOKING

EXTRAORDINAIRE

I really did not expect anything quite as astonishing as A-Thiam 102 restaurant when visiting this place in the part of J-Town aptly known as Kota Tua (Old City). My friend did mention something about it being home-style cooking, but popping into (literally) someone’s house, going into their kitchen and asking their maid to cook you a meal? That is just out of this world for me. Fascinatingly out of this world.

falls here; enough to render them epic. Business and trade has flourished however to a great extent and it has become the commercial hub of Jakarta. And tucked in one of these busy slithering streets a brilliantly unique concept for a restaurant exists: a home-style cooking extraordinaire.

From the outside, this place is just someone’s two-storey house, with a brass door and Chinese writing on the 2nd floor’s wall. History has it that A-Thiam 102 is located in the Pasar Pagi (morning if a house has Chinese symbols written on the 2nd market) area, in the old part of town where the floor, it means that back in the day, it belonged to Chinese communities are. You’ll get to see the someone important. I didn’t explore further into bustling commercial activities, shops, traditional whose house this was however, because I was too market places, and small hawker stalls scattered all awestruck when learning that I had literally just over the place. This part of town has a long history, walked into someone’s house to have my lunch. dating back to the 17th century during the Dutch Inside, there is a rather cluttered guest room settlement, and has seen the extreme rises and occupied by two family-sized dinner tables that

seat around 12 people. There is also a living area with one big round table that seats 6 people further down the hallway, a room whose door remains closed that connects to the dish washing area, and a kitchen further down in the back. There is no menu provided here. You just proceed straight to the kitchen, where you’ll find two old lady cooks, point at the ingredients and ask them to cook you something. Therefore, it is good to go with someone who is connected and knows their way around. The dishes are authentic Hakka cuisine and served with no fuss and frills - the ultimate home-cooked style. We had 5 dishes in total: Stir-fried Beef and Bitter Melon; Stir-fried Fermented Chaisim with Beef Tendon; Hong Pork – a leg of ham stewed in soy sauce and stir fried with mushrooms; Chinese Omelette served with a thick, sweet and spicy sauce; Fried Gurame and lastly, Chinese Tofu cooked in Taosi sauce. The meal came promptly and it did not disappoint at all. As a matter of fact, it is Chinese home-style cooking at its best. The Chinese Omelette was hard to beat, perfectly crisp without any trace of excess oil. Obviously presentation isn’t considered as something of importance, but the flavor had enough intensity

to bring me to my knees, and it was all for only Rp.138K. I think I’ve just found my Chinese food heaven and if you’ve lived as far from home for as long as I have, you’ll learn to appreciate any food resembling home-style cooking, especially when it tastes as good as this. beatmag.com | 067

Get the A-B-C Movies!

“The A-Team” menjanjikan hiburan kelas A, sementara “Brothers” dengan mixed review-nya mungkin B saja. Carrie Bradshaw dalam “Sex and the City 2” tampak semakin mirip C-owok, jadi kelihatannya bakal jadi film kelas C. Jadwal lengkap ada di www.blitzmegaplex.com.

ur film review line-up this fortnight features movies whose titles hint at what to expect. ‘The A-Team’ proves itself to be synonymous with ‘A-rated’. ‘B’ for ‘Brothers’ offers up a B-rate war drama to cinema audiences, and ‘C’ for Carrie (Bradshaw) could well mean “Carry on through the cinema listings, guys – this one’s for the girls.” Read on to find out about three more of this summer’s blockbusters, all showing at Blitzmegaplex.

The A-Team Action. Director: Joe Carnahan. Writers: Joe Carnahan, Brian Bloom. Cast: Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, Jessica Biel, Sharlto Copley, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Patrick Wilson. Lewat trailer-trailer film “The A-Team”, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson juga terlihat cocok sebagai pengganti Mr. T menjadi Sersan Bosco “B.A.” Baracus. ‘A’ is for ‘The A-Team’ – a remake of the popular TV series, starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Patrick Wilson and hottie, Jessica Biel. The special force team is set up, and accused of something they didn’t do. Why is this testosterone-filled, hilarious and explosive action movie destined to be A-class entertainment? They simply have the right formula… and the perfect cast.

Brothers Drama. War. Director: Jim Sheridan. Writer: David Benioff. Cast: Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman.

‘B’ is for ‘Brothers’ – a remake of multiple award-winning Danish movie, ‘Brødre’. Not that this 2009 release is labelled a B grade movie, but the mixed reviews from the critics suggest that we shouldn’t get our hopes up either. Tobey Maguire is Captain Sam Cahill, who is sent to Afghanistan, leaving his wife (Natalie Portman), and children behind. After his jet goes down he is announced dead. His brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes his place in the family, when Sam’s sudden return home brings shock and surprise that rocks his whole family, especially his brother Tommy and their relationship. Scriptwriter David Benioff – of ‘25th Hour’ and ‘The Kite Runner’ – is the saving grace here, together with Gyllenhaal’s excellent performance.

Sex and the City 2 Comedy. Drama. Director: Michael Patrick King. Writers: Michael Patrick King, Candace Bushnell. Cast: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall. “Carried On!” kata poster film ini. ‘C’ is for women’s favourite, Carrie Bradshaw, in ‘Sex and the City 2’. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall should maybe be cast in ‘The Golden Girls – The Movie’ instead, or perhaps we could change the title to ‘Sex and the City: 2 Old’. Who cares for the story? Even the trailers look like fashion commercials. The “exotic” location – shot in Morroco – and Spanish siren Penelope Cruz want to promise a bigger movie, but really, set your expectations as low as possible. Better yet, save your sanity and watch ‘The Craft’ instead.

style An Afternoon with Jamal Hamadi

O

n 9th May 2010, the Fashionese Daily team and Beat writers hosted a blogger meet-up at Kemang Icon hotel, where we had the chance to meet with the hair stylist, who literally messed with Sharon Stones’ head and is responsible for Linda Evangelista’s chameleon hairstyle the one and only, Jamal Hamadi. Jamal Hamadi is a world-renowned hairstylist, whose work has been featured on the covers of British Vogue, British Elle, Vanity Fair and many more. He also has a line of hair care and hair styling products called Hamadi Beauty, with a tonge-in-cheek tagline “Tested on actresses, Never on animals”, which he said is based on a true story with Heather Graham! During the session, Jamal Hamadi, who visited Jakarta to work with Sunsilk in the development of a new product line, shared with us many useful tips, which we Tweeted during the session. In case you didn’t catch our tweets, here are Jamal’s tips for healthy hair: 1.Never set your curling iron (or any styling iron) on the highest temperature, because it will only ruin your hair in the long run. 2.Always moisturize your scalp and hair because if your hair is having the moisture it needs it will stay healthy no matter how often you colour it. 3.If your hair is a bit thin on top, get a thick bang to create the illusion of fuller hair. 4.Tea tree essential oil works best to fight dandruff. 5.Never use metal brushes as they will create static. Use a wooden brush or static free brush for best results. 6.When you’re styling your hair, use a big round brush for a smoother result. Using a smaller brush will only give a ‘pouffy’ result. 7.For perfect hair colour, try one tone lighter from your eye colour. Jamal also suggested colouring just a few shades lighter or darker than your natural hair colour. Never go too light too fast. And of course, Jamal also mentioned that for 2010, the hairstyle trend is the pixie cut, and short hair with lots of layers. So if you’re thinking of cutting your hair short, this might be just the perfect time. Affi, Editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude

Marc

M

arc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2010 collection is about all the things that were good, and combined together, create something even greater. In this collection you can see everything that was once a trend. From zippers and studs to checkered and polkadot, it has it all. The jacket has maintained its status as a wardrobe staple, along with high-waisted pants and skinny jeans. Added to this, you’ll see the latest summer addition of tribal prints. What’s great about this line is that Marc Jacobs has brought these elements together and playfully clashed them into something that works, using many different colors in a single outfit. Judging by this range, I think jeweled colors are going to be big this season. Colors such as amethyst and mustard yellow will be refreshing to see, but green

by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2010

is likely to be the most popular of all. You can also see shades such as fuschia and neon yellow. This collection feels very much youthful and energetic, which is what we all need in our lives and our closets; that feeling of a great summer all year round. The fashion show, which took place in Plaza Senayan, was opened by the band, Santamonica, whose sound and vibe complemented the spirit of this collection perfectly. My favourite? The oversized sunglasses and studded chunky heels that completed many of the outfits.

art SCOOP/CULTURE Exhibition Deutscher Jazz/German Jazz

Jazz arrived in Germany in the 1920s. After being prohibited in the Third Reich, it began to re-flower from the mid 40s onwards. It succeeded in taking root in the cultural life of the Federal Republic and gained outstanding international reputation. The exhibition Deutscher Jazz/German Jazz tells this eventful history of German Jazz. Furthermore, it describes the vibrant jazz scene in current day Germany. In this context, the presentation of different stylistic trends will be complemented by portraits of distinguished personalities and institutions, firstly of influential musicians and bands and secondly of important clubs, festivals and record labels. A manifold presentation is ensured by a balanced mixture of text, photos and music samples. The exhibition is open for viewing on June 7 – 11, from 11 am – 7 pm in GoetheHaus, Jl. Sam Ratulangi 9-15, Menteng. Tel (021) 2355 0208

Anniversary Exhibition – Bobvarium This June, Srisasanti Syndicate presents a solo exhibition by Bob Sick Yudhita Agung, an eccentric artist from Yogyakarta, whose provocative artworks became the talk of the town in 2007. Bob dedicates his life entirely to art, to the point of using every inch of his skin as the canvas for his tattoos. In this exhibition, Bob presents 15 artworks, which carry the theme ‘Bobvarium’, taken from the words: Bob and Ovarium. Bobvarium is an analogy of Bob’s own creative process, a sort of representation of how his motivation and creations are incubated in his mind and soul, in order to produce new artworks. The exhibition is curated by Fery Oktanio. The Anniversary Exhibition ‘Bobvarium’ is open for viewing until 26 June at Srisasanti Arthouse, Jl. Kemang Raya no.81. Tel (021) 719 3954

Maps and More

B

artele Santema is well known in foreign circles around Jakarta for being a fine bar and restaurant publican with a number of successful locales, a scribe who published a book of his days and experiences at his famed Bugils bar, and most recently, for opening a gallery featuring historical and original maps of Indonesia and the region. Maps are another one of this Belgian’s passions and he has spent many hours scouring forgotten lairs and mysterious locations in the hunt for the best maps of far gone and romantic times. When asked where this passion came from, Bart, as he is fondly known around the traps told TBJ, “I considered antique maps a safer investment than putting money on a boring deposit or something. My passion started after I bought my first trophy map (a rare expensive map). After that I couldn’t stop. Collecting maps is also more fun too. I mean you don’t hang a rare stamp on the wall. A map you do.” Those of you interested in history, particularly the history of Southeast Asia and Indonesia, should

take a bit of time out to pay a visit to the new Bartele Gallery above Cazbar in the Mega Kuningan area. Bart, along with the gallery’s curator and map expert, Dr. David E. Parry, has assembled an impressive collection of maps, all of which are for sale. Even if you’re not looking to buy one however, the gallery is well worth a visit. Antique maps are genuine collector’s items and generally much cheaper than antique silver, paintings or furniture. They are also of great intellectual interest and are absorbing and intriguing to ponder. A lunch trip to Cazbar and a look upstairs at the Bartele Gallery could be your next rewarding day out in the big smoke.

Imagining T

he Yuz Foundation brings together the works of four Chinese photographers, Gao Lei, Shi Guorui, Yang Fudong and Zhuang Hui, to Jakarta this June, and boy, the phrase “a picture speaks a thousand words” has never been more true. The public debate on whether photography is art or mere documentation does not seem to matter at all when we are confronted by powerful images, that do not simply tell stories, but tease, poke and even slap our understanding of our confined reality. There are such unfathomable truths out there, and they can be captured by a camera; a box of technology that is able to convey talents and the intents of the person behind it. I think the work of a photographer is a work of interpretation. Images captured are more about what is perceived rather than what is actually in front of you. This is how a picture speaks a thousand words, representing the mind and emotions, and turning them into more than a story, turning them to art. Take it from Gao Lei, a Beijing based freelance artist, whose sharp observation was able to capture the innocence in two

little girls’ expressions when they witnessed a bus explosion in front of their eyes in Jerusalem. It was subtle, delicate yet bluntly intense, so that just by looking at this image, a grown man could be reduced to tears. Or take Shi Guorui’s work, which has the awe-inducing quality of grandeur that draws people in. His gigantic images resembling film negatives are created using the simple principle of camera obscura or ‘pinhole’ method. Meanwhile, Zhuang Hui’s 12 year project holds us confounded – amazed by his commitment. If Shi Guorui’s work is an epic monumental overview in negative, then Yang Fudong’s series ‘Ms.Huang at M last night’ is a sweet little sketch drama shown from up close - an attempt to translate gossip and overheard stories into images. This exhibition gives us a glimpse of contemporary Chinese photography, thanks to the Yuz Foundation. The level of commitment and talent shown in this exhibition is a humbling reminder that it shouldn’t matter whether it is a paint brush, camera or even hammer that shapes the art, but the mastery of the person who uses it to give it meaning.

Re-Imagining The Real: Photography Exhibition is open for viewing until June 30th at Yuz Museum, Dharmawangsa Square unit 31-33, Jl. Dharmawangsa VI & IX Jakarta

Changes Are Afoot

3

Many lunchtime sandwich lovers may have noticed Oberoi’s Junction restaurant has recently adopted a new look. Overnight it changed from a bustling hot spot to a demolition site. The owner told the beat The Junction is headed for a new concept in interior and exterior design, but he also said that fans of The Junction’s famed sandwiches and salads need not worry, as the menu will still remain, plus some new additions. If all goes well, The Junction will re-open sometime in June. Another venue to make changes in the past weeks was our old fave, Petitenget’s Hu’u Bar. They have completely remodeled the DJ booth and bar area, added a special VIP section and it looks great. It’s still being completed while we speak and should be 100% finished very soon. Renewed and refreshed with Dimas now in the fray, it’s definitely worth a look. The much anticipated W Resort, also in Petitenget, is fast approaching completion with the date set for opening to be in November this year. We had the inside info last week that the resort’s dining and partying venues will be open to the public and look set to take the island’s entertainment levels up to new heights. Beachside dining and entertaining are going to get a much overdue shot in the arm. Another interesting turn up are the new late night bars popping up around town. The Gallery has quickly become a hit on the late 3am time slot (to the probable dismay of the owners) but with a quality setup this venue on Jl. Dewi Sri is making headroads into a notoriously competitive market. The Cave, on Petitenget, (the name does sound very familiar) has also been getting some heads through their door and Devine Wonderland opened grandly last week putting some alternative rock tunes back into a music bar for the first time since electronic took over everything. It’s always good to see people appreciating something new in da hood.

nniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary

Double Six 23rd Anniversary sat 5 June 11 pm

Roger Shah At which point in your career do you believe you scored the biggest break? Any particular moment that stands out? I think that it was probably my single ‘Lost’ or maybe everything in 2008 that led up to that single. It was voted the No. 1 track of the year on A State of Trance the most popular trance radio show in the world, which was the culmination of an incredible year. Strangely though it’s really only the last 12 months that I feel that my life has changed dramatically. Are there other areas of music that you would like to explore someday? Any closet dreams to sing for a punk band or compose vocal melodies for a Gregorian Monk outfit?

090 | beatmag.com

As a man whose talent appeals to thousands of people across the globe, Roger Shah’s deep love for the melodies of trance have pushed him to the top of his creative game. He’s stepping up to the Double Six hotplate to headline their huge 23rd Anniversary line-up and it’s set to be a scorcher for all you dance floor junkies. The Beat got a Rogering before party time…

Ha – I love it! Those are mental images indeed... Why not go all out and go Gregorian punk?! The ultimate in out-there hybrid music! At this place and time I’m very happy indeed moving back and forward between the twin worlds of trance and chill-out (of which I do a lot). In terms of the future I think the motto is ‘never say never to anything’. Who knows what music I’ll be making in 20 years? Bringing a live element to your sets is obviously something that you see as an important aspect of performance. We’re expecting to see a keyboard by your side at Double Six, are there any other tricks that have been added to your sets lately?

feature

y. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Six 23rd Anniversary. Double Yes, it’s very important indeed as performance is everything to me. In terms of adding things in on top of that I am always thinking about new ideas. However when I start with additions like the keyboard I don’t add them in lightly – I’m looking for something that will prevail over time and even to become somewhat symbolic of what I do. So I’d have to be really certain in my own mind that whatever comes in next is going to work in the overall performance. Having released a score of successful productions over the years, are there any tracks that hold a deeper personal meaning for you than others? Hmmm. Good question. I don’t think I’d say that my answer runs heavily deep, (in a personal, life changing way) but on six out of every seven days I’d say ‘Lost’ and ‘Found’. They both feature Zara on vocals, the latter being my new single, and in essence, something of a sequel to my most popular track. I guess there is a symbiosis between the tracks that does go deeper than just the title and ties together a short, but very significant period in my life. As far as remixes go, do you often request to remix someone’s work or is it usually vice versa? Who have been some of your favorite artists to remix? I do remixes from time to time but honestly, these days I really prefer to work on my own productions. It might sound funny but I really know where I am with my own music. I start a track and right from the off I know exactly which direction I want it to go. The closest I think I come is when I collaborate with other artists. When you share a production credit it kind of becomes something akin to a remix. How would you describe your creative process when it comes to writing music? As I said earlier, I’m really single-minded when it comes to my productions. When I sit down it’s a simple ‘vibe’ thing. Am I feeling something chilled? Something more melodic? Or something euphoric? I typically start with the beats – finding the right kick is absolutely essential and then when I’m happy I’ve got something I like I’ll try working melody ideas over the top. It kind of rolls on from there really… If I’m collaborating with someone, it’s different - more of a shared ethic. For example I’ve just done a second track with Signum and

that again is the almost perfect 50/50 split between his heavy uplift sound and my melodics – it kind of meets in the middle. The first one, ‘Healesville Sanctuary’, very much found its place on the dance floor and I think the new one should do the same. Now that you have a rather jam-packed calendar and the demand is high, do you still manage to cut loose and party with the best of them or is that a lifestyle that was left behind when you took the ‘DJ’ from in front of your name? You know, I’m a pretty professional guy - when I go somewhere to perform I’m solely concentrated on getting the party going for others. So the partying I do is more when I get home. Usually after a longer tour away when I’ll call my friends, sometimes my work colleagues if they’re around and we’ll go to one of the many great bars in my town. That’s where I do my partying! What’s got you fired up for 2010? Quite a lot, Ibiza naturally! Aside from that though I’ve got a party coming up on Ganuba Beach in Cyprus which is a solo Shah thing – I’m very much looking forward to that. People sometimes question these things but for a DJ to be able to steer the entire musical course of a night is a very wonderful thing. My music is ‘Balearic trance’, but by its definition, that covers a lot of ground. Trance across a huge tempo range is played in Ibiza - everywhere from the beach to the bar to the club – that’s a lot of ‘places’ that a DJ can take people. I think it should be a very special night in Cyprus! Roger’s new compilation album ‘Magic Island – Music For Balearic People Vol 3’ will be out on June 11th. In the meantime, get to Double Six for their monster 23rd Anniversary, and get entranced…

feature Local Spotlight Taking a closer look at some talented individuals in our midst. This week... Marlowe Bandem grew up in an artistic environment, and has blossomed into one cutting edge graphic designer, artist and DJ. The Beat pulled up a chair to find out more about this multi-talented man…

Marlowe Bandem

Marlowe, how did it feel, being raised in such an art-influenced environment? How did it affect the way you grew up? Definitely suffocating. I mean, you get encircled by too many great figures. Accomplished artists, quick, witty thinkers and brave souls that don’t necessarily push you in the right direction. There were times when I believed I couldn’t accomplish much or do anything as good in such a milieu. As I matured, I embraced music and I’ve believed in it ever since.

How do you cook it all up into your own art form? Those stomping grounds are my muse, thus my art serves the muse. Say the muse is this outof-the-blue girl, then I’ll faithfully cater for her needs. If a political struggle becomes the muse, I’ll endure it all the way. If the muse is nothing, I’ll make something out of it. I’m like a chef, I’ll combine and heat the ingredients and make them work depending on who’s here for the feast. Does your father’s big name (I Made Bandem) put pressure on you, or is it a huge motivation instead? Both at the same time. I find the proximity pleasing and it gives me that added confidence, not to forget all the access to the art scene I have. Compounding that with the contemporaries surrounding me, life is good. Could you define Marlowe Bandem’s five most personal interests or pursuits in life… The tales of five? I just pursue my self; thrills, not in the context of extreme sport; sounds/images close to the heart; and most definitely warm conversations over the coldest beers in town.

Your graphic designs, what stories do they tell? DigiArts are my designs against tyranny, my so-called perspectives on living life as part of a burden to the good Mother Earth. They’re simply an intimate medium where I share the beauty I have witnessed, the exuberance I have felt, and the anxiety I have suffered. A poet I am not; images convey 1001 stories. You seem to avoid the limelight in DJing, playing in communities etc instead - what’s the mission? My spouse won’t allow me to play in clubs (laughing) anymore. Too many occupational hazards, I suppose. Seriously, the club is the place for me to wind up, plus playing clandestinely in communal settings does have its own surprises. Name 3 of your favorite songs in the playlist and tell us why you chose them. I’ll rattle and shake in all the right places by cutting up Everything is Borrowed (Jin Choi), then A Walk in the Dunes (Alexi Delano Mix) by Terry Toner and work the starry night by setting Other People (Original Mix) by Adultnapper on rotation. Any rituals for inspiration..? Again, cold beers and tuning the dial to 98.5 FM The Beat Radio Plus. Every day. You do lots of different activities in life. How do you keep your equilibrium steady? Actually, I keep it real by doing many things. It gives me the edge. You know, the more complicated and tense it becomes, the more creative I can be. You live for the extremities. Any words to inspire new artists / musicians? Do it like you mean it.

Not Just a Nightclub more than just a nightclub, Vi Ai Pi also dishes up some fine dining delights. The Beat’s Tosca checks it out…

Vi Ai Pi Jl. Legian Kuta t. 750425

hen walking down Legian street, it can be pretty hard to hear your own thoughts sometimes. The blaring bass beats, live bands and shouts of street sellers and partygoers are what best characterize this area come night-time. So you can see why promoting venue Vi Ai Pi as a fine dining establishment might prove to be quite a task. Try it out though, and you’ll most likely be sold.

The new management at Vi Ai Pi are focusing on a new concept – a complete overhaul of the previous image. No longer just a nightclub, this place is now all about the food before midnight. Walking up the stairs and off the street, you are presented with an oasis of calm in comparison to the hustle and bustle below. The dancing flames of candles that line the staircase and sit atop the

food SCOOP

tables contrast strongly against the predominantly black décor, creating a super-sexy and stylish ambience. The trendy bar in the middle of the space acts as a divider between the restaurant and cocktail area. Behind the bar, stairs lead up to the ‘midnight lounge’; an area that comes to life with dancers and a DJ every night from 12-3am. In the restaurant area itself, a stage that overlooks the street, has been set up to play host to a range of bands, that entertain customers from 9pm ‘til midnight every night of the week. It’s not quite time for the band yet though, so with the chilled sounds of sunset-style grooves in our ears, we take to our super-comfy black cushioned seats, pick up some fancy ergonomically-designed cutlery and a fancy menu to match. The menu has been developed by Balinese-born Chef Arie. After working on a UK-based cruise ship for 3 years, he’s been heading up the kitchen in Vi Ai Pi since November 2009 and has played a big part in the changes that have taken place. We study our options under the light of a half moon, which is clearly visible in the open-air part of the restaurant. There is an eclectic range of dishes available that offer something for everyone, including Pastas and Noodles, Soups and Salads, a ‘Recommended’ section and a variety of Mediterranean dishes, along with several other main course choices. You can try Greek Moussaka, Souvlaki or Spanish Seafood Paella for 80K, French Coq au Vin for 70K, or a vegetarian Italian dish, Aubergine Parmagiana for 60K. Braised Lamb Shank and Australian beef steaks feature in the Recommended section.

contained shrimp, carrot, lettuce, chives and rice noodles. The appetizers were the perfect size to satisfy that initial hunger you feel when entering a restaurant, without bloating us - which was a good thing, as both main courses were to die for. First was the Crispy Peking Duck (90K) – which came recommended by Chef Arie and is one of the most popular dishes with customers. The duck was cooked to perfection, succulent and tender with crispy skin and glazed with a sweet oyster sauce. It was served with steamed rice, Bok Choy and a Hoi Sin sauce. We also sampled the Grilled Australian Tenderloin Steak (125K), which was mouthwateringly juicy, tastily seasoned and served on a bed of potato with grilled mushrooms, green salad and pepper sauce. There’s no excuse for not fitting in a dessert when they’re as delicious as the ones on the Vi Ai Pi menu. Try the Bali Banana Split (30K); a Bali-style twist on the old favorite in the form of banana tempura (deep fried banana), whose potentially uber-sweet factor was balanced out nicely with a scoop of refreshing vanilla ice cream. Last, but definitely not least, was the luxuriously indulgent Chocolate Brownie (35K), which combined the rich, chocolatey, nutty flavours of the brownie with chocolate ice cream and a caramelized sugar decoration, whose taste was reminiscent of toffee apple coating. Dessert heaven. So, no more wandering past Vi Ai Pi and assuming (wrongly) that it’s just another nightclub with regulation fast-food style dishes to suit people’s party munchies. Because it really is so much more…

We kicked our meal off with a refreshing little starter – the Mango and Crabmeat Salad (25K), Tosca and the Vi Ai Pi Rice Paper Rolls (also 25K), which beatmag.com | 095
