entertainment. So many entertainers came to perform in IIMS, the motoring event might as well be parallel to a music event. In just its final weekend, artists performing in IIMS included top charting Raisa, jazz band Maliq & D’essentials, Endah N Rhesa, and Geisha on the Nissan booth, Mike’s Apartment on the Tata Motors booth, Tompi, Ada Band, Yovie and The Nuno on the Mazda booth, Syahrini on the Suzuki booth, The Dance Company, Gigi and Ari Lasso on the Daihatsu booth, Kahitna, Naif, Tulus, and Kotak on the Toyota booth, girl band JKT 48 on the Honda booth. The most anticipated performer was British band, Arkarna, that rocked the Suzuki booth for the two final nights of IIMS. All this for just a Rp 60k entry ticket. Aside from musical performances, IIMS visitors were also entertained with standup comedy and magician shows and let’s not forget all those beautiful cars. So always keep your eyes on what’s going

SCOOP Djakarta warehouse project 2014 The Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) is by far the biggest dance festival in Indonesia, consistently bringing in the finest international electronic music talent. Set to be held in JI Expo this year, DWP has chosen a new venue to throw the annual massive party. Last year the organizers got a bit of criticism by choosing to hold the event in the bottleneck Ancol area, causing a chaotic traffic gridlock in North Jakarta, and being outdoor the rain definitely didn’t help. Historically a one night party, this year’s DWP will be held for two consecutive nights on December 12 to 13. As of going to print, the confirmed lineup includes Above & Beyond, Adventure Club, Bondax, Dvbbs, Kaskade, Nervo, New World Punx (Markus Schulz & Ferry Corsten), Nicky Romero, Peking Duk, Rasmus Faber, Showtek, Skrillex, Steve Angello, and Steve Aoki. 37th Jazz Goes To Campus The oldest and most celebrated Jazz festival in Indonesia, Jazz Goes to Campus, will be held on November 30, 12pm, on the campus ground of Universitas Indonesia, Faculty of Economics. SCOOP Art Drawing Exhibition at Tugu Kunstkring Paleis Bataviasche Kunstkring, one of the most beautiful historical buildings in Jakarta, now managed by Tugu Hotels and restaurants group known for bringing back to life the beautiful art, culture and history of the archipelago, will host an art exhibition by Odji Lirungan. For him, the techniques of painting can break away from all entanglements, and all streams become important in the process of working to realize his ideas. The exhibition will be held from October 16 to November 15.
The New Face of X2 Club After a long renovation, as of September 5 the X2 club was back in business. If last year the club embraced a goth vibe, this time around it takes on a more glamorous and luxurious look. The renovation included replacing various props and interiors, where the color of gold and silver now dominate the room. In addition to new lighting, visuals and interior, X2 also revamped their logo which embodies a concept of unity. Soon to be renovated will be Equinox, and then the upstairs VIP area, EGO.
Clubbing Race 2014 Imagine the Amazing Race for clubbers, the annual Clubbing Race 2014 is looking for participants to take part in the race, especially those who have skillful knowledge of the local clubbing scene. The race will begin with a party on October 11 in X2 Club to choose two past contestants of the Clubbing Race to run again this year, then for this year it will kick off in Hard Rock CafĂŠ Bali on October 26, Pyramid Bali on October 27, A Club Bali on October 28, then to Makassar, in Redtro Club on October 29 Oct, Foreplay Surabaya on October 30, and finishes again at X2 Club on October 31. DJ DubVision is comprised of two Dutch brothers that are making quite a buzz in the dance music scene with their tracks such as “All By Myself”, “Rockin”, “Into The Light” and “Hollow”. The brothers also teamed up with Canadian producers Project 46 in creating “You & I”, featuring the wonderful vocals of Donna Lewis. Just like “All By Myself”, “You & I” received huge DJ support and awesome critiques and reached #7 in Beatport’s Main Top 100 chart and was a Progressive House chart Top 5 tracks for ages. They will be performing in X2 Club on Friday, October 3.

A proud New Yorker now living in Switzerland, Sean Tyas burst onto the scene in 2006, after Sander van Doorn selected him as the winner of the “Punk’d” remix contest. Shortly after releasing his debut single and first #1 record (Lift), Mixmag & Beatport named him “Best New DJ” and “One To Watch,” marking the beginning of Tyas’ journey to becoming one of the most celebrated names in trance music. This year Sean signed a highly publicized, exclusive multi-album deal with iconic dance music label, Black Hole Recordings where his debut LP is scheduled for release next year. Jahan Yousaf, Yasmine Yousaf, and Kris Trindl (aka Rain Man) is the trio behind Krewella, currently one of the biggest EDM exports from the US. In 2012, they self-released their first two EPs: Play Hard and Play Harder, which reached number ten on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Formed in 2012, Marsh Kids is a collaborative between members of different established bands. Their sound is a creative fusion of ‘80s synth pop, funk, drum and bass, and post rock. Adding color, Marsh Kids members have quite the age gap, from early ‘20s to 40 year olds. The Beat checks in with the lads to find out what they have to say about the major versus indie label amongst other things.
abundant amongst us during these glorious years. That is the main inspiration. We have been working on it for two years. As for the concept of the music, we find the desert as the main symbol for us to represent our emptiness in this universe. TBJ: What do you think the Indonesian indie rock bands/scene needs to do in order to grow a bigger audience and appreciation? MK: We personally don’t have the inclination to think about the formula on how to do it. The best advice is to work together among the bands and not to care about the sales and fame and just make music for the sake of music itself. TBJ: Is it cool to stay indie and uncool to be dictated by a major label? If the opportunity comes, do you think indie bands ought to consider an offer from a major label? MK: We think the major label is dead now, but to be fair, some of the ‘indie’ bands here are not impressive because they’re not sincere with their works and creations. The best formula we think is the spirit of indie label combined with the working culture of a major label.
TBJ: What is Marsh Kids about? MK: Our songs speak of longing, forgotten poets and redemption. Anyone can say that Marsh Kids is a collaborative project. But for us, Marsh Kids is not a side project, we have built a strong bond just like our original bands.
TBJ: What’s the band’s most memorable gig/ funny/ interesting experiences so far. MK: At The Beat Room in Fez Dungeon, because Billy took control as band leader and was a impromptu stand up comedian.
TBJ: Your band’s Facebook and Twitter profile photos show the band in an old western theme. Tell us what it represents. MK: It represents some of our songs in our upcoming 1st LP. Actually it’s not a specific old western theme, but an outlaws theme. A homeless vagabond theme. The outfits represent the great depression era. We sometimes feel that we don’t have work or prospects in our own home, just like that era. It has inspired us to travel free by freight train and try our luck elsewhere.
TBJ: What are some of the misconceptions about the band that you would like to address? MK: If there are any misconception about this band out there, it would be most likely that we are perceived as a side project band for the members, of which it is not true at all. We are a serious band making serious music and all the while being playful at it. Another thing is that the western-style perception is not our main intention. We simply want to represent the gloomy shades of people by conjuring the stigma of the outlaws of the west.
TBJ: You guys are about to release an album. What is it about, what was the source of inspiration, and how long have you guys worked on it? MK: From sadness and gloomy days that are

In for the long haul There are no more long weekends until Christmas: will we cope? 28

FEATURE I’m sure that many of you – like me – took a sneaky look at the calendar sometime during or just after the Lebaran holiday to see how long it would before the next break was due. I was dismayed to discover there are none – at least until Christmas Day, which this year falls on a Thursday, followed soon after by New Year’s Day a week later. Independence Day this year fell on a Sunday, while the next national holiday, Idul Adha, is also on a Sunday. And so it goes, until almost year-end. October has one more national holiday (on 25th) but that falls on a Saturday, while November is completely bereft of them, even on the weekends. This year has been quite unusual as so many national holidays in the latter part of the year have fallen over weekends. In the early months of this year many more holidays occurred mid-week or close to the weekend, meaning that a five-day working week was occasionally relieved by a day off in the middle, or a long weekend became feasible. Polling day for both legislative and presidential elections in April and July fell on a Wednesday, so most people had that day off too. The month of May this year was quite unusual, containing four mid-week national holidays, with two in the same week.
travel, see friends, etc. is if you dip into your limited, precious annual leave allowance or plan a break around a long weekend. Equally, retailers usually regard long weekends as a potential sales bonanza so it’s going to be tough going for them, too. Take some consolation from the knowledge that this year’s userunfriendly distribution of national holidays is not an annual event, as many of the religious days are “moveable feasts”. Next year, it’s a whole lot better, as only four of the 15 national holidays fall on weekends and only June and November don’t have a national holiday at all. Contrast that with the UK, for example, where there are usually no public holidays at all (even over weekends) from late August until Christmas. Over the years, the issue has taxed the minds of those in government so – who knows? – there may just, one day, be a more even distribution of days off for everyone over the course of the year. Meanwhile for all of us here, we’ll just have to knuckle down to some hard work and make the most of the weekends for the remainder of the year: work hard and play hard, I think the saying goes. POLARIS Polaris are fast becoming one of the top cover band acts around town and they played The Burgundy Beats 90’s Party last month so we thought we would catch up for a few words with Juno, the singer from the band. Let’s start with the basics.... Who are the members of Polaris and how did the band get started? The members of the band are Anton (drums/ cajoon), Isal (bass), Kenny (guitar) and me, Juno (vocals). The band was founded in 2012, but since we’ve had some personnel changes here and there. We started when we got a regular schedule in a cafe in Kemang, set up the team and here we are continuing till now.
What kind of crowd do you like playing to most? Where’s the best place to play in Jakarta and why? Youngster and not a boring crowd, best place to play for us would be Beer Garden Kemang where the crowd there goes crazy! Do you have aspirations of making your own songs or happy to just gig around with covers? Yeah, it’s already on our menu but still in preparation. How often do you play in a week and where does Polaris normally play? Usually 4-5 times a week regularly playing at cafes and events. 3rd Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale
J
akarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale is a biyearly contemporary ceramics exhibition. Ceramics in Indonesia have a very promising potential, especially when supported by the abundance of Indonesia’s natural resources and the wealth of its artistic and cultural heritage. Therefore, the Indonesian Government represented by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy presented the Third Jakarta contemporary Ceramics Biennale as a way for artists and the creative community to showcase the potential found in innovative and creative ceramic works, as a way to represent the progress of Indonesian ceramic arts in particular, and as a benchmark of global ceramics development in general. JCCB#3 is constructed differently from its two predecessors. Works are now classified into three groups: Art, Design, Craft and tradition. Co-curators and conceivers of JCCB, Asmudjo J Irianto and Rifky Effendy chose the theme COEFFICIENT OF EXPANSION, as a

The public is invited to evaluate no less than 60 ceramic works by 60 artists, comprised of 25 Indonesian artists and 35 foreign artists from USA, Argentina, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, UK, Switzerland, Australia, India, Pakistan, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Phillipines, Singapore and Thailand. The Third Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale is taking place now since September 23 to October 13 and is held in Galeri Nasional Indonesia (National Gallery of Indonesia), Medan Merdeka Timur 14. The opening ceremony was held on 23 September, opened by Mari Elka Pangestu,
Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy and the event presented a performance from Jatiwangi Art Factory; a band that plays music with ceramics instrument. Beside the exhibitions, there is also a symposium, Artists talks, and there’s still a chance to go to the ceramic workshops that will be held at Galeri Nasional Indonesia on October 4th, from 3pm to 5pm and Saturday, October 11 from 3pm to 5pm. The Sound of Contemporary Classical Music

he progress of modern innovation has an effect not only on human lifestyle in general, but also on specific parts such as classical music. At the beginning of the 20th century, composers were experimenting with an increasingly dissonant pitch language, which sometimes yielded atonal pieces. Over decades we saw modernist composers keep progressing with new ideas such as twelve-tone technique to even led to the birth of electronic

music. Classical music that we know is evolving into a new dimension known as contemporary classical music, where the orchestra is not only performing on its own but in a more conceptual form and mixed with modern and non-classic instruments. Ensemble Modern is one of the best chamber ensembles from Europe. They’re particularly famous for performing music from modern composers.
CLASSICAL Formed in 1980, the group is based in Frankfurt, Germany as an initiative of students from the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie to support ‘new music’ and perform the appropriate genre. The group currently consists of 19 soloists from different countries such as Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, Great Britain, India Japan, Poland and Switzerland and is known for its unique and distinctive programming. It includes musical theatre, dance and video projects, chamber music, ensemble and orchestral concerts. Its program has led to extraordinary and longterm cooperative ventures with renowned contemporary classical music composers such as John Adams, George Benjamin, Gyorgy Ligeti, Steve Reich, Frank Zappa and many others. Here we have a composition that was brought to us from notable European composers, such as Frank Zappa, Greggery Peccary & Other Persuasions (2003), Everything Modern is Healing Nicely (1999). Those two compositions were not only very popular but also were awarded at the Praetorius Music Prize Lower Saxony in 2009 for musical innovation from the Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie as well as “Artist of the Year” in 2006 from Beijing Music Festival.
This ensemble has also had its own subscription series at the AlteOper Frankfurt since 1985 and regularly produces opera in cooperation with the Frankfurt Opera, as well as a series of workshop concerts on contemporary music. Funded by private and government institutions, this great ensemble gives approximately 100 concerts each year. Luckily, this year they have finally decided to come to Jakarta for the very first time to be part of the 2014 Salihara Festival at the end of this month. Represented by five soloists, this is the first time in Jakarta that will have musical compositions that include works of Pierre Boulez, Nicolaus A. Huber, Helmut Lachenmann and many more all under one roof. Listening to Ensemble Modern will definitely take you into a modern realm with its urban tone and innuendo to the future sound. The fact that they have such ability to play this difficult music with complex rhythms and tempo is definitely an achievement of its own. It’s a rare treat and is NOT to be missed!

Ryan Adams
Ryan Adams spirit of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and R.E.M. The alt. country sensibilities are still detectable, but anyone hoping for a repeat of Ashes & Fire will be left disappointed. “It was serene and acoustic and all my friends who usually tell me how it is – said it was beautiful,” stated Ryan Adams late last year of the planned follow up to 2011’s stunning alt. country masterpiece Ashes & Fire - “But I scrapped it”. Fans of the prolific yet inconsistent singer songwriter won’t find this surprising, but the last time Adams ditched his default brand of acoustic Americana on 2003’s Rock’n’Roll, the results were less than spectacular. Like the great Neil Young before him, its admirable to see a musician who refuses to sit in his rut, but when that rut is filled with magical acoustic country records you can’t help but think he’s just being a stubborn bastard. Here on Ryan Adams – his 14th solo studio album, we’re presented with a more full-bodied collection of earnest heartland rock ballads that draw together the
Thankfully, unlike Rock’n’Roll, the album is by no means an awkward, forgettable mid-life homage to the rock bands he worshipped as a kid. For the most part everything sounds snappy, urgent and sincere. The opening bars of “Gimme Something Good” set the tone with their stabbing power chords drenched in gothic organ, before unfolding into a widescreen rocker brimming with intent. “Trouble” and “Stay With Me” keep up the energy, while slow burner “Shadows” deals with Adam’s experiences of coping with Ménière’s disease – an affliction of the inner ear that causes chronic bouts of vertigo. It’s a particularly dark, claustrophobic moment amongst a generally troubled album. “I just don’t love you any more/I just wanna sit here and watch you burn,” he snarls on “Am I Safe”. Not exactly the happy place you’d expect him to occupy, now married to actress Mandy Moore and reportedly

free of alcohol and drug addiction. However, Adams has always been more comfortable in this downbeat territory, a persona that conflicts sharply with Ryan Adams the goofball ADD blogger, who makes bad heavy metal records for fun, and once presented a pseudo hip-hop radio show under the name ‘DJ Reggie’. The most telling moments of the album are when he switches off the amps for the fragile “Wrecking Ball” and delicate closer “Let Go”. There’s no getting away from the fact that these two standouts fall firmly into the classic acoustic country that he’s tried so hard to eschew here. Adams remains resolute though: “I often wonder why artists tail off when they get older. I think it’s because they find something that works, get good at their jobs and do what’s expected of them. I don’t want that”. It’s a fair point, but it doesn’t stop me wishing he hadn’t scrapped the first version. Dan Ashcroft

His use of geometry and fractals is straight-up hypnotic, and he is second to none when it comes to playing around with the entire spectrum of pink.
Sass & Bide Look, I’m sure Australians are sick of being typecast and cast into tropes like “easygoing” and “upbeat” and “free-spirited,” but there’s no other way to pin down the aesthetic of this Antipodean label. The label burst into the New York scene after making their mark in 1999 with bespoke denim, and they’ve been taking flight ever since. Markus Lupfer Markus Lupfer’s work is wearable and fun, and I can think of no better way to put it. His graphic sweaters and knitwear let the world know that there does exist a happy medium where street style graphics meet preppy silhouettes and materials. Three Floor I remember when Deszell showed up to FDHQ and raved about how great the dresses at Three Floor were. This London-based brand really is all sorts of amazing, with innovative dresses and separates available at prices more wallet-friendly than their designer contemporaries. And those are just the clothing lines available at Shoppe 33, I haven’t even gotten started on the great names they’ve picked out for shoes and accessories. Friday Fragrance:
Euphoria by Lush I walked into a Lush store in Singapore with the hopes of buying a solid perfume, but you know what they say about shopping: there are your plans, and there are the shopping gods’ plans. Lush fragrances are produced by the fatherson team behind Gorilla Perfume, a range of “revolutionary fine fragrances inspired by art, music, and poetry.” Gorilla Perfume scents are unconventional — some almost jarring — in a way that makes you describe the scents in terms of sensations rather than traditional fragrance identifiers. I’m already a big fan of Sikkim Girls (humid) and The Bug (sunless), and I was excited to add another to my collection. I picked up a scent called Euphoria in a tiny little vial, its little decorative sticker evocative of a circus tent. I think that the “loud circus tent” feeling is pretty accurate when you pat this on your pulse points. This is a cologne with warm, citrus-y note, mixing essential oils derived from clary sage, neroli, lime, and grapefruit. It is

immediately uplifting upon application, and — like all good fragrances — it smells totally different depending on who wears it. The only thing I don’t enjoy about this is that it is a cologne, meaning that the lasting power is not that great. Of all the scents in the Gorilla Perfumes range, Euphoria is arguably one of the more milquetoast ones — but that’s like being asked to pick out the weakest Elie Saab dress in an immaculate collection. So this isn’t necessarily a bad scent: it’s just safe, democratic, and universally pleasing. The scent is available in sizes ranging from .03 fl oz to 3.1 fl. oz. bottles. I picked up the tiny .03 fl. oz. bottle for SGD $25 (~IDR 235,000); I feel that it’s a little pricey for something made up mostly of alcohol, but it’s worth every penny if you are in line with any of Lush’s strict policies of not testing on animals, buying ethically-sourced raw ingredients, and being vegetarian-friendly.

Say Hello to My New Favorite Under Eye Concealer by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com I’m no fan of under eye concealer. Previous ones have either been too cakey or oily to be considered a staple in my daily beauty regimen, so I’ve accepted the fine lines, dark circles, and eye bags that have been conspiring against my face (and my imaginary modeling career) for the past ten years. I figured that if eye bags were good enough for Carine Roitfeld, they’re good enough for me. But I totally changed my tune on how I feel about under eye concealers when the Phyto-Cernes Eclat from Sisley fell into my lap. The Phyto-Cernes Eclat promises to be a concealer and skincare product rolled into one. It contains ingredients to help fight off three main problems in the skin at the under eye area: shoddy microcirculation responsible dark circles, tissue slackening and reduction of fatty deposits responsible for eye bags, and dryness behind fine lines. Some of the ingredients are extracts that come from organically-grown plants — I don’t know if that’s supposed to help, but I’m sure it will win you good karma points when you get to Hippie Heaven. I’ve always been intrigued by cosmetic products that double as skin care, mostly because skincare and makeup are almost always at odds with each other. The 2-in-1 nature of this product makes my inner lazy girl dance with joy.
I was listening to Beastie Boys when I tried out the product, which put me in a a pretty playful/rebellious mood — so I went against the shade recommendation for my skin tone (#3 for olive skin tones) and chose the slightly orangetoned #2. The texture of the product is somewhere between canola oil and porridge: it doesn’t glide on as smoothly as the MAC Select Moisture cover, but it will fully cooperate to the demands of your finger or brush once the skin warms and melts it. The product comes in a tube with a metal applicator tip that you apply directly onto the skin before blending with an applicator brush, but since I received the product in a sample sachet, I applied it with my ring finger. But that didn’t keep the results from looking pretty impressive, with the product doing an excellent job of neutralizing my dark circles and eye bags. There is one catch to this product though: while it did really well to hide my dark circles and eye bags, it was less kind to my fine lines. After about two hours of wear, I noticed that my fine lines appeared more prominent due to the product somewhat drying up. Despite this, I’d still seriously consider buying the Phyto-Cernes Eclat for its skincare qualities. It’s not every day you run into a concealer that also works to actually prevent additional future damage to the super sensitive skin under the eyes.

But we suggest that you should sit down and enjoy the food and drinks. They are really worth savoring. Tended by Kempinski’s five-star service team, you know that the quality is outstanding. You’ll find breakfast items, served all-day, like your choice of eggs (50k), or the Swiss Sweet (55k); bircher muesli with fruits and berries. Soup lovers will take pleasure in the Wild Mushroom Soup With Fresh Herbs And Sour Cream (50k) and the Caramelized Onion Soup With Gruyere Cheese Crouton And Fresh Parsley (50k). The refreshing juices (40k each) are excellent here; try the beloved Sunshine: an apple, orange, and beetroot mix. Or take it up a notch with the greenish Wake Up Call (bok choy, pineapple, lemon juice, strawberry, lychee) or the Bitten Bee (orange, carrot, pineapple, honey, with a nice ginger kick). Fancy some tea drinks? There’s Mixberries Tea Cooler (40k); tea with mixed berries sorbet, strawberry bubble, almond, and honey, or the Popmint Tea (40k); tea with lemon juice, almond, mango, and lychee bubble. And for your caffeine craving, the Illy Coffee of your choice will surely satisfy. LUC Bar & Grill A great place for whisky aficionados and foodies alike!

pened earlier this year, Luc Bar & Grill is another addition to the popular Senopati-GunawarmanWolter Monginsidi area. It is one of a few places with an impressive selection of whiskies in Jakarta but we’ll go more into that later. Interior-wise, the place can be described as rustic-meets-industrial, and the vibe is sophisticated but relaxed. A few cheeky drink quotes on the wall and a nice casual touch. On our recent visit, we started with a couple of bar bites like the Smoked Salmon Pinwheel (59k); a simple yet tasty dish of smoked salmon on bread, topped with cherry tomato and sour cream. We

also enjoyed the more complex flavor of the Escargot (50k). Be sure to ask for the spicy kind. Sublime! The hearty Pumpkin Soup (55k) tasted like a comfy security blanket, but we gotta give high marks for the Thai Beef Salad (49k). The Carpaccio-style beef is mixed with greens and pomelo, and the tangy, spicy dressing just brought it all home! A must try. As for the mains, the steaks are much loved here. Try the prime cuts of Rib Eye or Sirloin where you can choose the weight of your meat. The menu states that 250g is Perfect for one person, 350g is Fit to share with someone, 450g is Comfy for three, and 600g is Superb for four. If pure, unadulterated steak is what you crave, then take your pick, carnivores! We opted, though, for the superbly succulent Grilled Lamb Rack (210k), served with asparagus, carrot, broccoli, mashed potato, and tasty pesto sauce. The Roasted Chicken (89k) is yet another popular item at Luc.

As for dessert, the interestingly-named Seduce Me With Cream (65k) is indeed, well, seductive. The expert mixologists here have also whipped up a number of signature cocktails. Among them are the Luc Walker (150k), a blend of whisky, vanilla syrup, coconut cream, pineapple juice, and brown sugar, or the Sergio’s Gin (120k); Bulldog gin, Campari, tonic water, with a cool, slight black pepper kick. And as we mentioned earlier, it’s the whisky selection that separates Luc from other similar eateries; from the usual Johnnie, Jack, or Chivas, to the more exclusive Canadian and even Japanese brands. And the number of Single Malts on offer is certainly impressive. The Happy Hour is already luring the office crowd from nearby business areas. Available Monday to Friday, 4 to 8 pm, you can enjoy the Buy-1-Get-1-Free deal on selected beer, or the Buy-2-Get-1-Free deal on selected single malt.

pened in May, Momo (‘peach’ in Japanese) is bringing ‘Modern Izakaya and Gourmet Cocktail’ to the masses. Izakaya actually means pub food; usually small plates or shareables like that of tapas. The place is decidedly modern, a departure from the usual Japanese restaurant décor. It has an urbane setting, but accented with playful touches, courtesy of some lighthearted murals. Contemporary yet casual, the same attitude is exhibited in the food. Though quintessentially Japanese in the menu execution, Momo has a certain cosmopolitan air about it reflected in exciting dishes. One of the small plates we tried was the Mochi Cheese Spring Roll (55k); crunchy fried spring rolls filled with soft mochi and cheese. Blending sweet and savory, it’s also a nice mix of texture.

FOOD We’re delighted to see the Japanese beers (125k/bottle) that are perfect accompaniments to the pub grubs. Hitachino and Baird Beer brands are available, each has several selections for you to choose. Next on our table was the Momo Beef Hot Pot (135k). It is one of the most popular items on the menu, and rightly so; thinly sliced premium beef along with vegetables, served with your choice of miso or spicy miso broth. Though it may look like one of the usual hot pots in many Asian eateries, we gave this a two-thumbs up! The miso broth is already tasteful, but we highly suggest that you try the spicy one. The special chili paste really brought it to a whole new level! And we love the fact that portion-wise, it can easily be shared with a friend or two.
Similar to the Beef Hot Pot, the Chili Fondue (130k) is another favorite; spicy chili gravy with breaded shrimp, chicken balls, toasted baguette, and mozzarella. For office workers from SCBD area and beyond, Momo serves a number of Lunch Specials. We tried the most sumptuous of these specials, the Chirashi Sushi Bowl (120k); a wonderful bowl of rice with salmon, tuna, scallop, tiger prawn, sea urchin, and dashi omelet. It also comes with crab and dashi omelet salad, and a tasty mushroom miso soup, plus your choice of ice tea/soda/bottled water. Not a bad deal at all!
For dessert, you’ve got to go with the Beng Beng Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream (50k)! Forget the infamous Nutella and Toblerone martabaks, Momo wants to bring you a familiar and memorable taste of Beng Beng chocolate bar, but taking it up a notch and creating a deliciously rich chocolate cake. As for signature cocktails, try the delightful Yuzu Ginealogy (110k); yuzu jam, gin, and grapefruit, or the Spiced Caipirinha (110k) with a specially-infused Sagatiba cachaça.
