Fresh W

ell, it’s finally happened: After a long and arduous journey, Joko (“Jokowi”) Widodo has finally got to see the interior of Merdeka Palace as a tenant, not visitor.

Following a growing crescendo of calls last year for him to contest the Indonesian presidency, Jokowi announced his intention to run early this year but it was not an easy ride, with neither the legislative election in April nor the presidential one in July providing either him or his party with a clear-cut mandate. With 47 per cent of the electorate voting ultimately for Jokowi’s rival, Prabowo, the most fractious and bitterly contested presidential election in the nation’s history reached its climax. The awkward photos of the two burying the hatchet (sort of) just three days before the

22

inauguration seemed to portray them more as an odd couple than genuine partners in the tough, nation-building exercise that lay ahead. Nevertheless, what is happening at a national level is something we as individuals all go through every now and then. For many of us, a milestone birthday (a 30th or 50th for example) or the start of a new year is the time we resolve to turn over a new leaf, do things differently – make a fresh start. However, just like the nation, we seldom have the luxury of starting with a clean sheet. Preexisting family or personal relationships, where we live or work and a host of other factors are likely to affect our ability to persevere with whatever changes we decide to make as part of a decision to start over.

FEATURE

start? Starting over can be just the ticket... so long as it’s genuine.

One distinct advantage we can enjoy, though, is that we don’t have the whole world looking over our shoulder as we do it. Many have compared Jokowi with then Senator Barack Obama when he ran for the US presidency for the first time, in 2008, with much of the world watching in fascination. Both Obama and Jokowi made it onto the cover of Time weekly news magazine, a kind of unofficial spotlight that illuminated their position on the world stage. “A New Hope” was the heading on the recent Jokowi cover, filled with a photo of the then president-elect staring directly into the camera, and therefore at you, the reader. “I’ll need your help, too,” seems to be the tacit, but unequivocal message the image conveys.

As with Obama, the expectations on what Jokowi might achieve are sky-high – many would say totally unrealistic – given the enormity of the economic and social problems that any incoming Indonesian president must address. None of this is made any easier by the fact that the political coalition opposing Jokowi now controls a majority of seats and almost all the leadership posts in the national legislature. Time alone will tell whether Obama’s campaign mantra, “Yes We Can”, will be forced to morph into a more measured but realistic, “Maybe, But Let’s Try”, for Jokowi in the tough challenge that lies ahead. Paul Van Dyk 24

FEATURE

Minutes prior to his live set in Colosseum Jakarta, TBJ managed to talk to Paul Van Dyk (PVD), who is hailed as one of the true pioneers of electronic music. He has been a DJ for over two decades, and was the world’s number one DJ both in 2005 and 2006.

About pop music embracing electronic music...

Until now he is still actively DJing and producing, with his Politics of Dancing 3 album set to be released soon. TBJ has interviewed many of today’s prominent DJs, and some have even attributed their love affair with electronic music rooting back to the time when they listened to PVD spin at a concert or rave. Simply put, PVD has inspired young kids to become DJs. Best yet, as he is amongst the few people that have consistently shaped the electronic music industry to become what it is today, he is quite opinionated on the matter. Here’s what he had to say about four topics we asked him:

Articulating his sound...

About his music... I’m there to entertain the crowd and not to educate. But I’m doing it at a level I feel has a lot of substance and has a lot to give. And all I can hope for is when people go home they can realise that “well, that was so much better!” Hopefully. Maybe they don’t like it either. The thing is it’s not an education process in terms of saying ‘this is how it should be’. I can only say ‘this is how I think it should be’. And just give it a go.

The music I listen to is not infiltrated by pop music. Electronic music is the best kind of music in the world, obviously there a lot of stuff out there that’s called ‘EDM’ that doesn’t have any substantial value for me. It’s like cheesy pop music. It’s like the music people listen to when going to the supermarket. This is not what I do and this is not what electronic music means to me. There’s obviously a lot of people who enjoy it, but it’s not up to me to judge it. But for my self, I would never listen nor produce it.

If you listen to the music I’ve made for the past 20 years its difficult to put into words. It’s music for a reason otherwise I would have just written it down. I really believe if you have open ears to electronic music all you have to do is just listen and you will find what you enjoy. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the music I produce. I make catchy hooks, and there are a lot of other things going on. I’m not really underground and it’s very energetic music, but there’s a heart in it, and not just a marketing concept behind it.

What sets his sound apart... I’ve collaborated with so many different people from different musical genres, but the problem is, at the end of the day it has never been a marketing product that then was sold. It was always about music. And that’s the difference.

FEATURE Tell me about yourself. Where are you from? I was born in Jakarta and spent most of my life here. There was a brief moment during elementary school when my family and I lived in Balikpapan.

What was the first track/song that you can remember that really impressed you?

when I DJ. For example, at the beginning I’d play 20s or 40s Jazz, then I’d move on to 50s/60s rhythm and blues/funk/soul, finally I’d build up the tension by playing some 70s to 90s rock and roll and other stuff.

Are there many DJs around Jakarta or the country spinning your kind of rock music? Is there much of a demand for them?

I remember I was watching MTV back in 1999 and the music video for The Chemical Brothers “Let Forever Be” was on. Both the video and the music blew me away with their crazy visuals and beats. I had never heard anything like that before (I was eight years old).

Yeah, of course. But the thing is the demand for DJs who play “unusual music” is not high enough yet because many people still prefer DJs who play songs that are frequently played on the radio.

How did you first get involved in music?

It depends of what sort of electronic music. But in general, electronic music has become the foundation of most of my work. I explore a lot of genres, but in the end, I tend to look for ways to combine them with electronic music.

In high school (2006), I was really into noise rock/experimental music. Bands such as The Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth really triggered me to make music, so that year my friends and I put together a psychedelic rock unit. At the same time I also started a solo project under the name Maverick, doing some electronica/experimental stuff. Currently, I’m in three bands (Glovvess, Strange Fruit and Dental Surf Combat) while working as an audio engineer. I’m also preparing a solo album to be released at the end of this year.

What kind of music can we expect on that new album, rock or electronic? The album is going to be full of my interpretation of old songs, so I guess that means it’s a cover album. I’ll be leaning more towards rock and jazz rather than electronic. It’s going to be different from my previous projects.

What term would best describe your DJ play list? “The Time Machine”, because I like the concept of music history with my playlist

What do you think of electronic music?

Do you prefer to be DJing or on stage playing an instrument in a band? Playing an instrument. But on certain occasions, I prefer DJing.

What are your thoughts on the indie rock scene in Jakarta? It’s still evolving. There needs to be more platforms for indie musicians to present their music to a wider audience. Even though the Internet has been a great tool to distribute independently produced music, I think that there’s still plenty of room for improvement when it comes to live performances, where musicians can truly interact with the audience.

What would be your favorite bands of all time? That’s a tough question. But I guess my top 5 would be The Cure, Talking Heads, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and Can.

You’ve just done a tour of Australia, right? How was that?

It was great! Always nice to tour in Australia, it’s a very unique country/continent and they have a big passion for music.

Where are you living nowadays? Where do you call home?

Munich, Germany. Also I was born and raised there.

I’ve heard you have friends in Jakarta and visit occasionally. What’s that about?

Yeah I have a few good friends for years in Jakarta. Darshan (hype music) for example is one of my oldest buddies from Jakarta and he is also a great promoter there. That’s why we have a business relationship but also a good friendship.

I really like your tracks on soundcloud recently. Especially that ‘Smile when you kill me Podcast 19’. Would those tracks come direct from your shows/DJ sets, vice versa or not at all?

No, my podcasts are different than the sound I play in clubs. They are more for listening at home or in the car.

What is your favorite track you will pull out without fail every show?

I have a few but it really depends on the club and vibe which one I´d pick

What’s the best fun for you, producing or DJing and why?

I love both. Producing and DJing are my passion ever since the start.

What do you think of the new EDM electro music that seems to have taken over, especially the big festivals, lately? And I might add, most of the clubs around Jakarta recently too. Is it good? Is it here to stay? Well I’m not a big fan of that sound. Maybe I’m just too old for it.

I don’t suppose you have ever been to Colosseum before. What can we expect on the night?

Since I’ve never been there before I don’t really know what to expect, but the lineup is really cool. So I think it will be a good one. Also I´ve heard that the venue is massive. Really looking forward to it.

CLASSICAL

Music for Life By Erza S.T. It is proven that music has the power to transform lives and the sooner one is inspired by it, the better their creativity growth will be. Classical, being one of the oldest forms of music, is believed to be the best stimulus to increase the growth of human brain creativity, even when the baby is still in fetus form. Many great composers in history such as Saint Saens, Rimsky Korsakov, Rossini and others also believe in this and they get in touch with their inner child by creating memorable compositions for children. To start November, Aula Simfonia Jakarta dedicated a concert for children that will feature not only some memorable compositions from renowned world composers but also some real animals to the stage! Though we can only try to guess the program, we have a strong feeling famous pieces such as Rimsky Korsakov’s “Flight

30

www.beatmag.com

of the Bumble Bee”, Saint Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals”, and Rossini’s “William Tell Overture” will be part of the concert program. Other composers that are listed in this concert included Schubert, Pujol and Moses Hogan. Accompanying the real animals on stage is an array of performers including child singers from JOS Children’s Choir, JOS Youth Choir, GRII Children’s Choir, with soloists such as Gloria Teo, Vincent and Hansen Wiguna, Djoenaidi Laudoe and Elsa Pardosi. Don’t miss it even if you are an adult as it will be fun to watch and hear. However, if you are craving something more serious for your soul, then perhaps watching and listening to Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2: Hymn of Praise and Symphony No. 5: Reformation would be up to your list. Composed to celebrate the 400th anniversary

CLASSICAL of Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 uses texts from the Lutheran bible done in a stirring symphonic cantata that makes it one of the most worldrenowned heavenly compositions. Similar to No 2, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 was also created to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession. It is interesting to know that this symphony is actually better known today than it was during Mendelssohn’s lifetime. As expected, when it comes to ‘heavenly music’ Dr. Stephen Tong will surely take the baton and lead both the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and Jakarta Oratorio Society. Nevertheless, on this occasion Dr. Stephen Tong will share one of the symphonies to be lead by a guest conductor from Belgium, Gabriel Laufer. A percussionist who is also a conductor, Gabriel Lauferhas has been performing for Monnaie Opera House in Brussels, and other world stars such as Sting, Toots Thielemans, to even some of our famous musicians such as the late Chrisye and Erwin Gutawa. Another way to start this month could be enjoying the romantic sound of classic guitar by Indonesian masters, Benny M. Tanto and John Vincent. Together with other musicians including those of the BMT Guitar Orchestra will perform a concert called Silver Guitar Concert IX at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta this coming November 1. Some great repertoires from Villa Lobos, Telemann, Mozart to Vivaldi, Paganini and many more are on their list to entertain you.

CD REVIEW

Alt-J (∆)

I have this glitch in my iTunes and it’s really been doing my head in lately. Ever since Indonesia’s Internet overlords switched off all the fun stuff like torrents, porn and Vimeo, I’ve been forced to give in to the Cupertino overlords and now actually pay for music. I know, mad isn’t it? And to remind me that I’m a complete consumer slave at the mercy of ‘the system’, every time I download an album from the iTunes store, I find at least a couple of songs that have been missed off the track listing. The names are there, they just don’t play unless I download them again, so for the first week of listening to This is All Yours I had this weird feeling that something was missing three of the standout tracks as it turned out – “Every Other Freckle”, “Left Hand Free” and “Warm Foothills” had been lost somewhere in the digital ether.

Wonderful

This Is All Yours

Wow

As a result, my first impression was underwhelming - after all I had been expecting a lot from a band widely hailed as “the next Radiohead”, but with the album eventually complete it all started to fit together. As with its predecessor, This is All Yours is a labyrinthine art-pop epic that never sits still in its wanderings to the outer limits of inspiration, flinging the listener through the subconscious minds of its creators with its bewildering mix of pastoral guitar folk and tribal swagger. Admittedly, on occasion the fidgety unpredictability borders dangerously on repetition the three part suite revolving around the Japanese town of Nara (“Arrival in Nara”, “Nara”, and “Leaving Nara”) feels a bit overblown, and reworking a version of one of your own songs (“Bloodflood Pt. II”) may be an unnecessary step too far. That said, if you’re the kind of person who likes to stare thoughtfully out of windows it’s hard not to sucked into this weird, unclassifiable

world. Garden fete recorder interlude? Why not. Sampled Miley Cyrus vocals mixed with French poetry? Ironically cool. Honky blues, barbershop harmonies, a song about John Hurt’s chest-bursting scene in Alien, completely daft allusions to sexual attraction etc etc… the list goes on and with every listen you’ll hear more and more. Joe Newman’s voice remains a chameleonic instrument that is infinitely intriguing – particularly when he’s deconstructing himself by chopping up his lead vocals with, amongst others, Conor Oberst on the gorgeous “Warm Foothills”, but even more so when he’s blurting out lines like “I want to bed you like a cat beds into a beanbag/turn you inside out and lick you like a crisp packet”. To paraphrase Churchill, This is All Yours is “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma”, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

MOVIE PREVIEW

This week’s movies are a great mix of drama, horror and crime. First up we got Robert Downey Jr. showing us his poker face as he tries to rescue his father from going to prison in The Judge. In between we have your classic horror movie to do with a magical/cursed antique that somehow a bunch of kids got a hold of – the rest is for you to guess in Ouija. And last, Revenge of the Green Dragons will have you on your tippy toes as the never-before-told true story is let out.

The Judge

Drama Director: David Dobkin. Writers:Nick Schenk, Bill Dubuque Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Vera Farmigia, Billy Bob Thornton, Vincent D’Onofrio. This movie is a melodramatic story of a father-son relationship. Robert Downey Jr. plays ‘Hank’ the son of a famous judge in New York. On his way back to the Big Apple, Hank learns that his father has hit and killed a man, a man that his father had years earlier sentenced to prison on a murder charge. The catch though, is that he doesn’t remember doing it. Hank sets out on a journey to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with his family that he walked out on years before.

Horor Director: Stiles White. Writer: Juliet Snowden, Stiles White. Cast: Olivia Cooke, Ana Coto, Daren Kagasoff, Bianca A. Santos, Douglas Smith . A group of mates find out that a girl has been mysteriously killed after watching a video of her playing with an ancient Ouija board. And like in any other horror movie they don’t just leave it in peace, they decide that it’s a good idea to investigate. What they soon realize is that some things are not meant to be seen or tampered with, especially if it involves ‘the other side’.

Ouija

Crime, Action, Drama Director: Wai-Keung Lau, Andrew Loo. Writer: Micheal Di Jiacomo. Cast: Justin Chon, Kevin Wu, Ray, Liotta, Harry Shum Jr., Shuya Chang.

Revenge of the Green Dragons

This story follows two immigrant Chinese brothers Sonny and Steven who survived the impoverished despair of New York in the 1980s by joining Chinatown gang “The Green Dragons”. Soon enough, the brothers were climbing the ladder and ended up high in the ranks of this gang, drawing unwanted attention from hard-boiled city cops. Sonny and his brother set out for revenge on the city that made them what they are today. www.beatmag.com

First Tory Burch Store Opens in Indonesia! by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com

H

ow exciting is this? Tory Burch is America’s sweetheart of designer goods with a label that skyrocketed after she opened her first store in New York back in 2004. I can’t believe it’s been only ten years since her name made it big in the collective consciousness of the fashion world; but in that very short amount of time, she has built an empire that now includes Tory Burch Beauty and Tory Burch Home, a label that includes furniture, home furnishings, and decor. This woman has gone from peddling designer accessories and clothes to being a bona fide lifestyle label in ten years! The most commendable thing I’ve achieved in the past ten years was learn how to make poached eggs. (Ha. Ed) Tory has amassed a legion of fans who love both her work and her work ethic. I’m sure her fans in Indonesia will be happy to hear that the first Tory Burch store opened its doors here very recently! It’s located on the first floor of Jakarta’s Plaza Senayan, where visitors will be greeted by the recognizable Tory Burch logo on her trademark orange facade. Crossing the threshold and stepping into the store feels like stepping into the walk-in closet of your dreams.

42

www.beatmag.com

You need to know that I have never been as obsessed with a store’s interiors as I am with this one. The bowels of the store are actually modeled after Tory’s own apartment, with lots of mirrors lining the walls to make the already large space an impression of it being even bigger than it already is. I love the gold trimming on the furniture and shelves, and I love how the place looks like an illustration out of a geometry textbook (I guess I have a thing for right angles). The store is packed with Tory Burch pieces from the Fall 2014 and Resort 2015 collections, not forgetting of course the shoes and accessories that made her a staple among the style elite. You can also see the super limited edition black python handbag designed exclusively for the Jakarta opening: only 20 were ever made, so you better be quick on making that purchase if you live for limited edition goods! No sign of Tory Burch Home or Tory Burch Beauty yet, but let’s keep our fingers crossed so we can get our hands on even more lipsticks to review!

Upcoming Fashion Week 2015 Updates! by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com

44

www.beatmag.com

I

t’s been a pretty exciting past few weeks, with the run-up to two premier fashion weeks in the city: the Bazaar Fashion Fashion Festival and Jakarta Fashion Week. When we were planning out our schedule for the next few months, we noticed how things looked a little bit tight and hectic — mostly because these two style behemoths are only set one week part from each other this year. If you love this editorial team at all, just know that we appreciate deliveries of vitamins, supplements, and sugary goods to keep our stamina and sanity in check during the upcoming weeks.

STYLE

So at the press conference for Jakarta Fashion Week 2015, we learned that the festivities will be taking place between November 1 – 7 at the same spot outside Senayan City where the Fashion Tent will be erected; but as usual, the Senayan City Atrium will see shows that are open to the public as well. We saw some familiar faces in the form of The Body Shop and L’Oreal Professionnel, who will be taking care of all makeup and hairstyling needs this year, but there was one new face: this year’s banking partner is Permata Bank. In addition to all the local designers we have come to know and love, there was an obvious shift to internationalize Jakarta Fashion Week, based on all the talk about the foreign talent flooding in to the JFW Fashion Tent. The British Council (which has been absolutely pivotal in the success of fashion programs in Indonesia) will bring in England’s Kitty Joseph, who has previously dressed the pages of Vogue and Elle magazines in Europe and Asia. Then there’s the Netherlands’ Erasmus Huis, which have created a special collaboration between Dutch artists Bagua Jody and Mada van Gaans with Indonesian designer Oscar Lawalata; and the Korean Cultural Center, has commissioned Monday to Sunday and Yosafat Dwi Kurniawan on a cultural style collaboration inspired by the K-drama Coffee Prince. A few hours after the JFW press conference, we scurried over to Plataran restaurant at Dharmawangsa for the Bazaar Fashion Festival press conference. This particular show has gone from strength to strength: what was a two-day show at Gandaria City last year has turned into a week-long event taking place at the Jakarta Convention Center this time

round. But while the fashion is definitely going to take center stage once more, it will be framed by Bank Mandiri’s Pasar Indonesia bazaar. Pasar Indonesia will basically be an indoor market, bringing the best of Indonesian culture, cuisine, and style to the people. The show will be opened by the untouchable Biyan Wanaatmaja and closed a week later by Sebastian Gunawan, with lumaries like Era Soekamto, Mel Ahyar, and Yogie Pratama to add their own shades of style as members of IPMI. And while JFW seems to have both inward and outward focuses to their shows this years, Harpeer’s Bazaar Indonesia Editorin-Chief Ria Lirungan stated that with the addition of the Pasar Indonesia bazaar at the venue, the event will not be a trade show, but a platform for local artisans to expose their work to the general public. A really, really interesting thing that both Jakarta Fashion Week and Bazaar Fashion Festival have have in common this year are the B2C (business to consumer) aspect of the festivals: in previous years, the Buyers’ Room at Jakarta Fashion Week have been a strictly closed-off affair, with buyers and media being the only ones privy to what goes on behind the closed doors. But this year, anyone can show up at the Buyers’ Room and buy whatever the designer is selling. Same goes with Bazaar Fashion Festival’s Pasar Indonesia, which adds a lively carnival festival to the affair. Don’t get excluded at this year’s fashion weeks. Show up at Senayan City and Jakarta Convention Center and feel the full brunt of the city’s fashion best and brightest for yourself. www.beatmag.com

Is the SK-II Stempower Your Key to Anti-Aging Care?

by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com

What’s the appropriate age to start using anti-aging skin care?

S

ome people will tell you that it’s fine to hold off the anti-aging products until your late 30s, but there are others who will tell you that there’s no harm in slapping on the good stuff while you’re in your mid 20s. I wanted to sort it out once and for all at a media gathering to celebrate the SK-II Stempower series, the brand’s star range of anti-aging products.

when I went for a facial with SK-II some months ago. The device measures your skin based on five parameters (texture refinement, firmness power, wrinkle resilience, spot control, and radiance enhancemen) and determines your skin’s real age — so you can be 30 years old but have the skin of an 18-year-old thanks to a good skin care regimen, and vice versa.

SK-II Stempower SeriesAnti-aging skin care is a sensitive and touchy topic enough as it is among women in their 40s and 50s, but it has become a hot topic for women in their 20s in the last decade too.

If the device lets you know that your skin is older than you are, then it might be time to consider products that effectively fight wrinkles and fine lines, like Stempower series.

Febrina Herlambang of P&G Indonesia has a different take on it, and suggests that “… women in their late 20s should start using antiaging products to delay the onset of premature signs of aging.” By investing in ant-aging skin care early on, the signs and effects of aging on skin will be less prominent later on in life. Febrina goes on to say that a good way to determine whether or not you need anti-aging products is by getting a skin consultation and check-up at an SK-II counter. Take advantage of the Magic Ring device, which I tried out

46

www.beatmag.com

To demonstrate the power of early anti-aging skincare, SK-II ambassador Susan Bachtiar went through a skin check-up using the Magic Ring device. Her loyalty to SK-II products for the past ten years has paid off, because the machine showed that while being 41 years old, her skin had the elasticity, suppleness and hydration of a 27-year-old. That’s a pretty good ratio if you ask me! So are you worried about the age of your skin? Get your free Magic Ring test and cosultation at an SK-II booth near you and find out whether or not the Stempower series is right for you.

Purple Liquid Eyeliner is The New Normal by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com

I

walked into the office one morning and found a delivery of goodies from Oriflame sitting on my table. Like a kid presented with a box of Christmas gifts, I gleefully examined the products one by one, and was particularly intrigued by a certain item: the Eye Liner Stylo from their premium makeup range, The One. There was nothing special about the way this product was packaged; but it was when I swatched it onto my hand when my eyebrows hit my hairline, because what came out was not a black formula like I had expected, but rather a dark violet. Despite officially being known in the catalog as Blue, this shade was definitely more of a deep purple, something you’d find in a boxed set of Crayola markers. I was a little hesitant to try it on at first, thinking I’d look like some child who mistook Crayola markers for makeup — but then I remembered Harumi Sudrajat, who once visited FDHQ with the same liner in the exact same shade. “It’s a dark purple,” I remember her saying, “but for some weird reason, it works!” She had a stash of makeup from Oriflame’s The One line, and had raved about how well-made the products actually were. And since I trust Harumi, I asked Shella to help me draw on the half cat eye from the Prada SS ’15 show, hoping to the heavens that I wouldn’t look too much of a muppet with an eyeliner that isn’t black. But you know what? I can dig it. The deep violet is not actually bright enough too look like purple on skin, but it also isn’t as harsh as black eyeliner. You know how sometimes black

eyeliner can look somewhat severe on someone who already has serious or permanently angrylooking faces? This is a good alternative for people who like brown eye liners and want to change up their look once in a while. There are two downsides to this product: first, it promises 24-hour wear. While it does stay on for a lengthy amount of time, it will bleed after about half a day (I wore this without a primer, so it might do better on primed eyelids). Then there’s the issue of removing it: it will mostly come off once you swipe a cotton pad saturated with eye makeup remover, but it will leave behind a faded mark that lasts until the next day, as if it had been stamped there. The removal process is a nightmare! I used up about four cotton pads and six cotton buds trying to completely get rid of it; even the mark on my hand where I swatched it stubbornly refused to come clean, even after I had tried to get rid of it with an eye makeup remover, micellar solution, oil cleanser, and facial scrub. Despite all the struggles, I still put it on the next day because I liked the color and the soft but sturdy felt-tisp applicator. So it’s really up to you: if you like easy to use eyeliners with good lasting power, you’ll find a winner with this product — but that’s only if you don’t mind spending more time hunched over your bathroom sink at night, trying to remove all traces of it from your eyelid. The One Eye Liner Stylo is available in four shades (Black, Brown, Blue, Grey) from Oriflame, and retails for 125k.

MARCO PADANG Taking Indonesia’s ultimate comfort food to the next level! We visited Marco’s second outlet in Lotte Shopping Avenue. We like the set up; the place looks sophisticated yet still manages to be informal. It’s the type of place that’s equally good for families, business meetings, or maybe even a date! At a typical Padang restaurant, usually they bring out a smorgasbord of food to your table for you to choose. At Marco, the food is prepared after you place your order, ensuring the freshness. The open kitchen provides a friendly touch.

M

arco Padang is an eatery with a distinctive concept. Forget the confusion fusion, the West Sumatran cuisine here is as authentic as they get. But the restaurant has a slightly upscale look about it, bringing the much-loved fare up a notch for Jakarta’s discerning foodies.

52

www.beatmag.com

The food is still characteristically Padangese; the spice manageable and the taste authentic. The recipes are from owner/Chef Marco Lim, himself a West Sumatran native. He learned the recipes from his family and also from his experiences observing the local food outlets over there. If you can’t decide what to get, a good starting point is the mixed rice dish called Nasi Sayo (21k); a nice sampler with rice, veggies, plus some sauces and chilies. But you can also order some rice (which comes directly from the region of Solok, West Sumatra) and a plate of the flavorful Randang Itam (35k).

FOOD In 2011 a CNN online poll chose Rendang as the number one dish of their ‘World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods’ list. And the Randang Itam is a variation of this Padang-style beef curry. With a darker color and smokier aroma, this dish is to die for! Another favorite is the succulent Barramundi Pindang Pacak (60k). The marinated grilled fish may look simple, but the taste is just wonderful. Some people may give pete (or petai) the cold shoulder, but the Pete Kacamata (25k) here is not to be missed! The ‘bitter beans’ are mixed with the crispy skin, with some chilies and other spices thrown in for good measure. The result is a palatable veggie dish that you simply have to try! If you’re done with the main dishes, the Martabak Kelapa (20k) is the dessert for you. Using coconut as one of the ingredients, it is a twist of the usual traditional pancake dish. And as for beverages, the Es Jeruk Kelapa (37k) is as refreshing as it gets. But we loved the Kopi Es (30k). The coffee drink is shaken and served cold (no ice) in a wine glass. Talk about fancying it up a bit.

The delicious coffee also comes from West Sumatra, and it’s a perfect drink after all that spicy food. Marco Padang is a great choice for authentic Indonesian fare in a finer setting. With plenty of delectable dishes to try, a next trip is already in the works! See you there? (Budi Iskandar)

LU introduced itself in August 2014 as a new pop-up social venue. With its punchy concept plus a gorgeous garden and poolside scenery BLU has become a popular congregation point for many of Jakarta’s beautiful set.

BLU is a collaboration between Shangri-La Jakarta and a renowned US-based marketing firm, Selavi Limited which is recognized for its successful partnership with Marquee New York, Beverly Hilton Los Angeles, XEX Tokyo and many others. BLU will open to the public for a limited time only (At the time of writing, until the end of December). The place operates Wednesday to Saturday nights from 5pm until midnight. You can chill out before more fun and high energy music takes over the room from 9pm onwards with the beats of live DJs or musicians. BLU offers three types of seating, from plush pillows on the terrace, to dining sofas, to customized beds in the lounge. There are also two bars and communal tables providing generous space to socialize in style. We dropped by on a recent Friday enjoying a relaxed sunset vibe and continued with an early weekend evening. Of course, we didn’t forget the wonderful food and drinks at BLU. Plenty of tapa-like dishes here, some even have a nice local touch. But if you’re with a small group, you just have to get the Blubird (498k). This sampler of small bites is uniquely served in a half-birdcage. There are savories like the sushi bubbles, miso tuna tartar, tuna tempura,

chicken and beef satays, and sliders, and also sweet desserts like macaroon or lady fruit. The presentation really went in line with the overall vibe of BLU. Speaking of presentation, we also love the Nasi Goreng (110k) here. This favorite local dish is given a slight make-over; served inside a glass, topped with fried egg, plus some satays and crackers on the side. Should you want more substantial grub, go for the Cowboy Steak (350k); 250 gram of wagyu rib-eye, with corn on the cob, Portobello mushrooms, and potato-truffle mash. And for your sweet cravings, there’s the scrumptious Strawberry Grand Marnier (48k). As for drinks, there are various signature libations for every discriminating taste. We opted for the Crimson Crush (120k); made with Belvedere Pomaranza, elderflower, pomegranate seeds, lemon, and soda, the Blu (150k); Belvedere, Blue Curaçao, lemon, lime jelly, lemonade, and the French Summer (139k); Chandon, Belvedere, mixed berry purée, lemon, summer berries. If you’re feeling adventurous, a floating bar can be installed upon request, providing a unique bottle service experience in the middle of the pool. Sounds like a cool idea for a party! A great alternative for urbanites, BLU is definitely a crowd pleaser of the highest order. And we hope it will continue its run beyond the end of the year. So, dress up a bit, and enjoy a BLU kind of evening! (Budi Iskandar) www.beatmag.com

RIBS Thinking of good American fare? Think Smokey Ribs!

B

y all accounts, Pantai Indah Kapuk is buzzing. This area in the Northern part of Jakarta has become the new it place for culinary adventures. From local to pan-Asian food all the way to Western fare, there’s something for everyone. Smokey Ribs is an American barbecue joint that is certainly a carnivore’s dream. And from the look of things, it is one of the favorite places around there. We visited Smokey Ribs around lunchtime on a recent Sunday. And when we finished more than a couple hours later, a good number of patrons were still coming in. The place is a big hit.

56

www.beatmag.com

We started with the Santa Ana Salad (95k); a generous mix of fresh greens, topped with crispy chicken, and grated cheese, served in a crispy tortilla shell, and complemented with homemade honey mustard dressing. Other tasty shareables here are the Onion Rings (Small: 30k, Large: 60k) and the Baked Potato Skins (55k). Again, a big point for the tasty homemade dips for these appetizers! As expected, the ribs (US beef and pork) are the stars here. First up was the luscious

FOOD grilled to perfection, it was bursting with flavor! De-lish! For a little more zing, try the St. Louis Spare Ribs (S: 130; L: 240k), with a choice of honey-barbecue sauce or spicy Red Hot sauce. You can also get the combinations like the Chicago Combo (220k): Chicago beef ribs and marinated chicken breast, or the Sam’s Combo (240k): Baby Back Ribs, St. Louis Spare Ribs, and American Pork Sausage. These dishes are served with coleslaw and a choice of side dish (fries, mashed potato, baked beans, butter rice, or corn on the cob). Meanwhile, steak lovers can pick one of the Black Angus or Wagyu choices on the menu as well. If you’re more into surf than turf, go for the JD Salmon (125k); grilled salmon with a special Jack Daniel’s-infused sauce. The sauce worked really well with the fish. Wash down all those savory dishes with refreshing mocktails like the Fruit Punch, Shirley Temple, or Smokey Rainbow (25k each), or go for the beers. There’s quite a good selection available here. For a perfect desert, get the Blueberry Cheese Cake (40k), or better yet, the Smokey’s Homemade Brownies (40k); freshly-baked rich chocolate brownies, served warm and drizzled with chocolate sauce, plus vanilla ice cream, topped with strawberry and whipped cream.

Chicago Beef Ribs (Small: 155k, Large: 239k); tender barbecued prime short beef ribs basted and flame grilled in a homemade BBQ sauce. If you prefer the larger beef back ribs, there’s Texas Beef Ribs (S: 155k, L: 239k). The house special here is the Smokey Baby Back Ribs (S: 130k, L: 240k); a rack of falloff-the-bone baby back ribs smothered with the homemade original BBQ sauce. Flame

So, get into a ‘good ‘ol boys (or girls)’ mode at Smokey Ribs! (Budi Iskandar)

Toymail - WiFi Communication Device

The Toymail - WiFi Communication Devices is pretty awesome. Here’s what happens. First, you connect the animal you chose (Buck the Deer, Milksop the Bear, or Rochester the Raccoon) to your home’s WiFi network. Then you get the free app on your phone. Now, you can send a voicemail to your child’s Toymail. When the mail is received, your kid’s Toymail will make animal noises! Your kid now presses the play button and hears your message in your voice or the animals (you select this on the app). But the awesome doesn’t stop there, because you kids can hit the reply button and send a message back to you. Multiple apps can connect to one Toymail, so multiple family members can send messages. The Toymail - WiFi Communication Device is a really fun way to keep communicating with your kids when you can’t be there in person. Heck, it’s even fun when you are just in another room! $59.99 www.thinkgeek.com www.beatmag.com
