And for some cities, it has become somewhat a pissing contest, making sure they put up the best show to be aired on CNN, BBC, and other major networks. The highlight of every New Year celebration countdown, these fireworks shows are carefully choreographed colorful explosions along with terrific sound blasts. These are the type fireworks displays that have people flock to see, including myself.

What I do find irritating is the massive amount of “stand-alone” fireworks that the local neighborhood puts up, which during New Year’s Eve happens pretty much in all neighborhoods in Jakarta. These fireworks might look pretty, but the amount of uncoordinated noise pollution spoils the magic. For me, the noise pollution is the equivalent of going to a club with 10 DJs spinning simultaneously.

However, some of our TBJ staff are proponents of these “standalone” fireworks. A rush of adrenaline occurs when sparking the short fuse, because who knows, it might even explode that instant- living life on the edge it seems. After running for their lives away from the lit up fuse, they bear witness as it flies up to the heavens, and turns into a beautiful light show, furious cracking boom in tow.

SCOOP JAKCLOTH Year End Sale 2014 Jakcloth (Jakarta Clothing Expo) is the city’s largest gathering for indie clothing labels. After much success held in the previous Lebaran holiday, now Jakcloth is back, this time with their Year End Sale. Jakcloth will be held in Parkir Timur Senayan on December 3 to 7. The event will also be packed with a wide variety of musical and entertainment performances, including international acts. Confirmed to perform at Jakcloth are Yellowcard and The Drums, also many local bands such as Ten2Five, Naif, Endha n Rhesa, Maliq & D’essentials, Mocca, Gangstarasta, and DJ Winky, DJ Yasmin will perform on the stage, and a cheerleader competition will complete the whole experience.

Jak Jazz 2014 The Jakarta Jazz Festival, one of the biggest jazz events in Indonesia is being held once again. The festival will be from November 24 to December 7 at 20 different venues, such as parks, cafes, malls, and universities. The festival will feature various forms of the music from traditional jazz, jazz & blues, pop jazz, Brazilian jazz, and even Betawi Jazz.

The jazz musicians that are confirmed to take part in this festival are Mus Mujiono, Idang Rasjidi, Ireng Maulana, Jabalrootz, Art Wongkar, Donny Suhendra, Rio Moreno, Suave, Lafa Green, Rocket Kasarunk, Trio Ligro, Maliq & D’esentials, Troy Kurniawan, also Keith Martin. Jak Jazz will come to a close on December 7 in Monumen Nasional (Monas).

Open Mic at Karumba Since early November Karumba Rum Bar in Mercure Simatupang Hotel has been hosting an “open mic” event every Monday, from 9 to 12pm. And for those brave souls who wish to sing out loud will be supported by BYSS band. The event is also supported by host and vocalist, Bertha. So next Monday it can be your turn to take to the stage and sing your heart out!

Soundphoria at Fez Dungeon Fez Dungeon in Kemang has a new guest home band, Soundphoria, which is made up of an international collective: Jess from the Philippines, Gomez from Colombia, BJ from New Zealand, Jeanot from Cuba and Fariez & Reza from Indonesia. The band has been playing together around Asia for over 10 years. As the band members come from all corners of the world, Soundphoria has unique sound and performance, playing everything from Latin to pop, to rock and dance. Also, they never use a music sequencer so what you get is pure 100% live music and vocals. For the past two decades he has been actively producing albums, with Plastikman: Ex released this year. He will be entertaining the crowd in Blowfish on December 10 as part of the Road To Djakarta Warehouse Project.

imi is a frontman extraordinaire, singing and dancing his way into the hearts of the fledgling Jakarta rock community of the early 2000s with first, the effervescent pop-rockers, The Upstairs and now, the more rock-driven Morfem.

We spoke to Jimi to find out what is going on his rocking Morfem world.

Jimi Morfem

SDW: I haven’t seen you for a while, what have you been up to since The Upstairs?

Jimi Multhazam: Well, right now we’re making a video for our new track, “Senjakala Cerita”.

Besides that I’ve been rocking it with Morfem.

When did upstairs finish and why?

No my friend, The Upstairs is still alive. But I have writers block when feeling the spacey sound and synth of The Upstairs.

So you prefer rock music?

I needed a new sound. I have missed the RAW for several years. So, The Upstairs is on a holiday now.

So how long has Morfem been together?

About five years now. We started in 2009.

Morfem’s first gig was at my solo exhibition at Ruangrupa.

And how did that come about?

At the first gig we had five members, covering several Velvet Underground songs with a modern/fuzz sound. We were substituting John Cale’s part with (Morfem guitarist) Pandu Fuzztoni’s noise. When we were playing the

Velvet Underground’s “I’m Set Free”, we knew what our first album would sound like.

So when did you release the first album? And how many albums have you recorded in total?

2010. We’ve made two albums and two mini albums.

And now we are working on the third album.

So who is in the band Morfem and what’s their history?

Me on vocals /The Upstairs. Freddie on drums.

He was from hardcore/crossover band Nervous Breakdown and still playing with shoegaze band, Damascus. Pandu Fuzztoni on guitars.

He was from The Porno, a post punk band.

You used to be a four piece right?

Yeah our bass player left and we have a stand in till we find the right guy.

In one sentence, what’s so good about Morfem?

It’s a mixture of lyrics, fuzz, and beats that fits to your party.

So what is it about the fuzz rock that excites you?

I grew up in the 90s, when the new bands

FEATURE started reviving the 60s sound and it became the new thing. From Sonic Youth I traced back to the roots and found The Stooges and the Velvets. One thing I learned was that punk rock could be fun with “sounds”.

Morfen isn’t really punk rock?

I love punk but I don’t wanna use that name to describe my music.

Intelligent rock? Adult intelligent punk?

I’m just more comfortable with the fuzz rock thing. It’s kinda more “Free Form”.

The Velvet Underground has always been one of my favorites.

Me too, always back to their records.

I saw John Cale play live on piano and guitar solo 1985 in Perth – awesome stuff.

Ohh shit, lucky you.

So you call the music - fuzz rock thing? Cool name.

Yeah fuzz rock is okay. Some said it was indie rock aaaah whatever. LOL. Hahahaha We love to name it Maybe we can name it whatever rock. I think that’s cool. Or we can use it for the name of our third album Lol. Good idea. So are there any changes of direction for the third album?

In the first album we were compromising with our bass player’s taste (ssst he’s a Beatles fan), Second album was like we shout out loud! Aaaaaaah We are freee. We have a new bass player. (Ha) In Sneakerfuzz EP we found what we wanted to be. In the third album, that’s was it maaan… Old premier drum set, being punished by our crazy drummer, Freddie. With the fuzzy guitar that I’ve never heard before from Pandu Fuzztoni.

So it’s back to rock n roll?

Yesss that is. We don’t need that much harmony.

But Pandu has been with Morfem since the beginning right?

Yes he’s the first guy I called. And said, hey, let’s play Velvets with a modern sound.

Yes, Pandu and Freddie were here from the beginning.

Didn’t you meet at some Negative Lovers gig?

Yesssss, when they were covering JAMC. We met in the crowd stage-diving when they were playing April Skies in a harsh way, Lol. In the mosh pit? Party animals!

Yeeeess that kinda party I mean.

So do you go out much and party around?

Where do you like hanging out?

I like to see a new fresh bands. Places like old BB’s, Parc (RIP), Borneo, 365, my colllege gigs (TIM). Underground gigs are lot of fun. I prefer seeking the band, more than the place.

Well, we’ve got one of those gigs on December 18 at The Beatroom at Fez Dungeon in Kemang and Morfem is headlining with Joymoron, Sunmantra and Negative Lovers supporting.

Wow Joymoron, I’ve never seen them. They must be raw with an up you kinda attitude.

Sunmantra is one of the few dance/rock bands that I’ve been meaning to see. And I’ll always be the number one fan of Negative Lovers.

Joymoron is similar to Sunmantra - electro pop. They are good. I’ve seen them before.

Aaah I thought they were a post punk band similiar to The Porno. They play first, right?

Yep. So u have to get there early. When is album three finished?

I will. Start with electro pop/dance then the noise finishes it. December I’ll finish my vocal track and January I’ll mix it. We hope it will be done by March.

Any other parting words?

Morfem datang semua pecah. (Morfem comes and all brakes) What does Morfem mean Btw? Every language has Morfem (morpheme). Morfem is actually good for a band name. Yang tak bisa di pisahkan (the word that can’t be separated more). www.beatmag.com

Rooftop Hangouts L

ike it or not, at the end of the year the city will be lit up by plentiful bright (and noisy) fireworks. However you feel about these firing menaces, here are some rooftop hangouts to enjoy the city view and the coming NYE fireworks displays. A plus for rooftop lounges are they are intimate, not club-size big, and the music is not too loud allowing guests to actually enjoy a conversation. Also, rooftop hangouts are perhaps the best designated pre-club venues before a long, wild night out in town.

Karumba Representing Jakarta’s south-side is Karumba rum bar on the rooftop of Mercure Jakarta Simatupang hotel. The 332 meter square venue offers fantastic views of Jakarta’s skyline 19 storeys up, which comes with outdoor and indoor areas - swimming pool in tow. Karumba is uniquely decked with plentiful contrasting pastel colored wooden elements, including its chairs, sofas, tables and even lighting fixtures and some parts of the floor. Guests here are entertained by live music performances that play everything from reggae to modern RnB & soul to Latin jazz & calypso to Afro-funk. We work in Ableton, and we enjoy the speed of the workflow. Any of the major DAWs are all great to work with, and at the end of the day it’s just a matter of preference.

How do you guys deal with ‘hitting a brick wall’ whilst producing?

If we really can’t progress on an idea or a track, which happens occasionally, we work on other tracks and ideas, and come back to it later. Or sometimes it helps to let the track rest for a couple of months and come back to it then.

What’s one song that you know makes the crowd dance like no other?

Our track ‘United We Dance’ is always effective on the dance floor!

You guys only started producing in 2011, what were your biggest inspirations at the beginning?

What made you want to become electronic dance music producers?

We always had a strong drive to remix existing songs, and we decided to really work on it in 2012. Our biggest inspirations in the beginning were guys like Eric Prydz and Axwell who we have been listening to for years.

How has your music evolved in the last 12 months?

Our music has become more varied sound wise and we’re always experimenting with new styles as well. You can expect a lot of new fresh music from us next year!

Get the hard stuff done first, then relax.

W

hen it comes to making a tough decision, it’s all too easy to simply put it on the back burner and maybe forget about it altogether, hoping that circumstances will change, rendering the decision unnecessary.

Unfortunately, life’s seldom like that, and the tough decisions we face usually have to be taken sooner or later. Procrastination is a weakness that we all plead guilty to sometimes, if we’re truly honest with ourselves.

Many of us will leave the completion of a task until the last possible moment, with the deadline hanging over us like a sword of Damocles. Equally, many will argue that they produce their best work when under selfinduced stress and a deadline is looming. The downside is that there’s very little room for error, should any unforeseen delay occur.

Let’s look at the current big picture: newly inaugurated President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo bit the bullet as soon as he returned from the three big summit meetings in Asia early last month, calling the cabinet together and confirming that the government was going to cut the fuel subsidy and raise prices by around 33 percent.

The pros and cons of a subsidy cut had already been debated for years, but Jokowi’s predecessor had put off taking the tough decision for so long that he was no longer in office and it now fell to the new president to deal with it.

The economic argument that the subsidy consumed an unacceptably large proportion of the state budget and disproportionately benefitted the well-off was hard to ignore, yet the recent substantial drop in the market price of oil appeared to work against the logic of cutting the subsidy.

In the end, a compromise was reached by reducing the extent of the subsidy cut and establishing a safety-net package for the poor (which got off to a shaky start), yet the cut initially prompted (largely token) street demonstrations, strike threats and other forms of civil unrest. Nonetheless, the president grasped the nettle early on, which should make fiscal life easier for the government in the months and years ahead.

As we approach year’s-end, we may have our own tasks that we’ve been putting off, or tough decisions that we’ve avoided taking. Why not grab the bull by the horns and deal with these matters now, so you can enter the new year confident that at least those worries are more or less off your mind? (Jim Read)

can’t believe that 2014 is finally over and this is literally my last classical preview article for this year. To me it feels like the deadline is always coming faster than expected; yet now I am writing my 12th article for 2014. To close this year, I have interesting concerts to share with various themes from the dramatic to festive.

Our beloved Indonesian classical music maestro is coming back strong this month by debuting his latest tragic opera piece called Clara. Inspired

by Seno Gumira Adjidarma’s short story with similar name, Opera Clara focuses on a tragic

CLASSICAL scene during the 1998 riot in Jakarta where ethnic Chinese Clara is the main character who is raped by an angry mob. This is a story where Clara is a victim who cannot get her mental wounds to heal and how law enforcement turned a blind eye.

We saw fragments of this opera when it was performed for a charity recital on September 25 at the Four Seasons Jakarta. However for its first world premiere, Opera Clara is scheduled for the public this coming December 14 at Graha Bakti Budaya in Taman Ismail Marzuki. Young and talented Indonesian classical vocalists such as Isyana Sarasvati (soprano), Nikodemus Lukas (tenor) and Widhawan Aryo Pradhita (tenor) together with Jakarta Drum School and Ananda Sukarlan Chamber Orchestra make up the great cast for this opera. As the show is going to play for one night only, please make sure to book your tickets right now!

From dramatic and tragic opera, we move on to more cheerful theme of Christmas and prepare ourselves for Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s annual Christmas Concert 2014. Featuring young award winning guest pianist Aileen Gozali, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra will perform together with Jakarta Oratorio Society bringing Christmas classics such as Handel’s Occasional Oratorio, Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1, Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Greensleeves and an array of traditional Christmas carols. Both resident conductors: Dr. Billy Kristanto and Dr. Stephen Tong will share the baton leading this concert.

Born to Indonesian-Chinese parents in California and then moving to Gulangyu, Xiamen, China, Aileen Gozali began her piano studies at the age

of five. She is currently a senior undergraduate student studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Mr. Antonio Pompa-Baldi. In the past, Gozali has done many masterclasses from renowned pianists such as Aldo Ciccolini, Adam Gyorgy, Steven Spooner, Iswargia Sudarno and many others.

She was just 11 years old when invited to perform for Lien Chan, then the Chairman of the Kuomintang, and gave her solo debut at the age of 12 at the Gulangyu Concert Hall in Gulangyu, Xiamen, China.

In addition to performing in concerts, Gozali has received prizes in several international competitions such as the Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition (2014), the Young Pianist Competition in 2008 (Singapore), the 8th International Chopin Piano Competition in Asia (Japan), the 3rd ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition (Junior High School Category) in Kuala Lumpur and more. For this Christmas Concert, Gozali is the guest soloist and will perform Tchaikovsky’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 1.

Surely, there are heaps of other Christmas concerts in Jakarta that will take place in churches including the famous Christmas mass at Cathedral Jakarta. Nevertheless we won’t have enough pages to write about it all. Thank you for all the support in 2014 and we look forward for a brighter and greater 2015! “When I was 27 I crushed a lot,” scribbles Karen O in the sleeve notes of her new studio album Crush Songs. Clearly in a pretty bad headspace, “I wasn’t sure if I’d ever fall in love again” she continues – the words heavily underlined, making you wonder just how close she was to going the way of her tragic music peers in the dead-at-27 club.

Fortunately, despite the palpable sadness that runs thick through Crush Songs, O had the composure to record her emotions at the time, most of which are manifested as barebones sketches comprising only of vocals and a single guitar. Understand that the term ‘studio album’ is used very loosely here, most tracks struggle to hit the one minute mark and it sounds like the whole project was recorded on her iPhone in a submarine.

Technically speaking, the album is a disaster - off-key, hell, off-everything and half the time it sounds like she’s making it up on the spot. To call it lo-fi is like calling the Bible ‘a bit preachy’ - “Comes the Night” is literally one note plucked on a single guitar string that lasts a minute and six seconds, while “Indian Summer” is little more than an idea for an intro.

Is This What Jon Snow Smells Like?

Excuse the creepy title, but that is exactly the thought that ran across my perverted little mind when I learned that Kit Harrington – that’s Jon Snow if you’re nasty — was going to front the visual campaign for Jimmy Choo’s brand line of men’s shoes and accessories.

Being a pretty big Game of Thrones fan, I get excited whenever I learn that the stars of the show have ended up in some movie or nightclub in the unnecessarily long lull between seasons; and at this point, I appreciate anything to tide me over until season five of the show kicks off again in the middle of 2015.

And as part of his fronting duties, Kit also happens to be the face of Jimmy Choo Man, the first-ever men’s fragrance from the Malaysian premier shoemaker. Don’t let the low-key bottle fool you: beyond the simplicity of its straight lines and transparent grey glass, this is an EDT with plenty of attitude. The design of the bottle is meant to be reminiscent of a hip flask, and I like the little leather detail at the bottle cap.

So yeah, this fragrance has plenty of attitude — but is it OK to say that maybe this scent has a little too much attitude? I found it quite overwhelming initially, because when I took a whiff of it the first time, it seemed to scream “manly things, beard steak lumberjack leather chair tobacco!”; which is surprising, because the top notes are that of lavender, mandarin, and honeydew melon.

And it’s here in the middle and base that you would find the notes of pineapple leaf and patchouli, with the latter being especially memorable: the base notes of patchouli and a “warm, amber-based wood” linger on the skin for hours after the initial application.

So is this what Jon Snow smells like? While I always imagined him to smell like melting glaciers and self-pity, I could also imagine this being the official fragrance of the Night’s Watch; I want to believe that this little EDT comes standard-issue in the Night’s Watch Employee Orientation Kit (in addition to fur-lined black cape and strikeanywhere matches).

What starts off as a rather upfront men’s fragrance finishes off nicely into something that’s warm and rich without being overly heady.

If you’re the type of girl who’s into wearing men’s fragrances, I think you’d agree with me if I say this has the makings of a classic — but I also wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to wait for it to settle for a few before taking on the world.

Tried & Tested: Bioderma Photoderm AKN Mat When I started the hunt for a new sunblock, I was looking for something similar to the one I had been loyal to for years, the Shiseido Very High Sun Protection Lotion SPF 50+. I love how watery this sunscreen feels and how quick it is to sink into the skin, meaning that it minimizes oiliness. So when I shopped around to replace the bottle I had used up, I wanted something with similar properties: high SPF (at least 30), low viscosity, lightweight.

I jumped for joy when I found the Bioderma Photoderm AKN Mat SPF 30. This is a brand that I already love by association to its micellar water, so I really wanted to like their sunscreen too. There were also two magic words on the tube that persuaded me into buying it: “Mattifying fluid.” Yes folks, I will buy just about anything that has the word “mattifying in it,” because my greasy t-zone could use a lot of love.

There were no samples or opened bottles to try out at the drugstore, which meant I had no idea what the viscosity of the product was like. I don’t usually fly blind when buying a product (edit: upon further reflection I’ve realized that no, I actually do frequently buy products without first researching them), but I was desperate for a new sunscreen and needing something to replace my diminishing supplies.

As soon as I got home and tore into my newlypurchased bottle, I regretted buying it at all: when I poured out the product onto my palm, the product that came out was a rather thick, pasty fluid.

Although already disappointed, I wasn’t ready to give up on this product just yet. I shrugged off the initial hesitation and started applying it onto

And then I blended it in some more, and then kept doing it again and again and again; but no matter how much blending or tapping I did, it left behind pasty white cast on my skin. It also felt unnecessarily thick and greasy, something that’s pretty unforgivable when you think about heavy-duty sunscreens that are neither.

The product info says that it is “Colourless when applied. . ..leaves no oily film and no white marks.”

Umm actually, no. This product is not colorless, nor not oily, and it definitely leaves behind streaky white marks.

Pros • it’s a sunscreen Cons • a little too heavy for everyday wear in the tropics • heavy white cast • greasy, oily feel afterwards It’s sad because I really wanted to like this product, but there was just no way of around its heavy texture and white cast. I’m sure it does a great job as a sunscreen, but when piled on top of lotion + serum + moisturizer, it just gets a bit too much.

I could not deal with the greasiness and overly white cast, which is why I now only wear this on my neck or for a hardcore day out on the beach (once I get there, that is). So unless you’re looking for sun protection in very sunny but cool climates, definitely avoid this one like the plague.

Yep, you read that right: online retailer Lazada is trying their hand at the fast fashion industry with an exclusive clothing line called LZD. This is akin to Amazon starting up their own book label, which makes this whole project all the more remarkable.

Spearheading the LZD project is Anne-Marie Bodal, Fashion Creative Director at Lazada Group; with years of retail experience under her belt, she and her team of Singapore-based designers have conceptualized four different collections that can be mixed and matched for maximum fun. With prices between from SGD 7-60 (~IDR 70,000 – 600,000), it’s unlikely that your shopping budget will be depleted while you try to stay on top of trends.

STYLE One thing I really appreciate about what the label does is this: with a headquarters in Singapore and offices dotting all over Southeast Asia, they are more than familiar with these tropical climes. One of the highlights of Jakarta Fashion Week in recent years has been the Indonesia Fashion Forward program. This fashion catalyst — one of the more prominent initiatives by the JFW committee — has been done in conjunction with The British Council, producing some of the biggest names in the contemporary style scene. It was thanks to this program that Major Minor was catapulted into the consciousness of the London style set when they were asked to commission a special collection for high-end department store Harvey Nichols.

So JFW continues to be an integral part of the Indonesian creative economy scene, helping drive an entire industry that provides countless

jobs and creative opportunities to practitioners at all levels: from designers to tailors, visual merchandisers to fashion journalists, this is a program that we look forward to and are proud to support every year.

To cement the commitment to the horizontal growth of the industry, the Buyer’s Room at JFW was opened to the public: this gave designers direct access to new pockets of the market who want to support the local fashion industry. Let’s hope the evolution of the Indonesian fashion business continues to grow from strength to strength. Here are a few of my favorites from the Indonesia Fashion Forward show on opening day:

umi Serpong Damai or BSD is one of the most rapidly developed suburbs of Jakarta. Along with the housing, there’s a plethora of eateries in and around the area for every budget.

Since opening in the middle of the year, Intro Jazz Bistro & Café is building a reputation for good music, good vibes, and good food.

The spacious interior is filled with jazzrelated paraphernalia, but the most striking decorations here are the collection of posters.

Big and small, they are mostly rare collectibles from past jazz festivals. The owners are unquestionably jazz aficionados.

There are performances on the weekends (and selected weeknights). The medium-sized stage is home for many local jazz talents to show off their skills.

The food here is noteworthy too. Finger foods are just the thing for you to enjoy the vibe. Try the Onion Rings (30k), Truffle Fries (30k), Classic Nachos (35k), or Spicy Chicken Wings (35k).

The grilled chicken is wonderfully marinated with a honey-based sauce with herbs and spices. It’s certainly one of the favorites here.

The Kampoeng Fried Rice (35k) and the Intro Soto Ayam (35k) are other notables.

Perfect to wash away those savory dishes are the refreshing smoothies and mocktails. We love the zesty Kiwi Mojito and the red dragon fruit-based Dragon’s Kiss (both are 35k).

Along with all the food and drink, Intro Jazz is also quite proud to have its own line of coffee, coming from the region of Wamena in Papua. It’s definitely a plus point for the place.

But if you want something more substantial, the kitchen crew at Intro Jazz is dishing out quite a selection of food for you to savor.

You can start with the hearty Soupe De Champignon (35k) or mushroom soup, the French Onion Soup (35k), or the Greek Salad (40k).

But of all the items on the menu, the main attraction is the Fat Man Burger (125k).

Yes, you can have the Intro Burger (75k) which itself is special because of the use of filet mignon instead of the regular ground patty, but no doubt the Fat Man Burger will provide a major talking point. And due to

We enjoyed the Vietnamese Chicken Sandwich (46k); seared marinated chicken fillet, carrot and daikon pickles, fresh chilies, and heaps of coriander stuffed in a baguette. An amazing explosion of taste!

There’s quite a number of selections for your burger fix, but the Monster Munch Burger (79k) was our top pick; 200 gr beef patty with watercress, caramelized onions, cheese and mushrooms. A monster of a meal!

How about pasta with a kick? Try the Spaghetti Cabe Rawit (29k); a spicier twist on everyone`s Italian favorite. Add tuna (12k) or corned beef (12k) for a bit more oomph.

Since ToGo is open early, breakfast is also an appetizing affair. From local favorite Roti Bakar (21k with peanut butter, srikaya, or chocolate, 23k with banana and chocolate) to the French Toast (33k) drizzled with orange honey syrup and praline, and all the way to the full Englishman (51k) - two eggs, chicken sausages, baked beans, grilled tomato, and toasted baguette ToGo got it covered!

asar Santa is a traditional market located in the South of Jakarta which has been in a funk for the last six years or so. Being surrounded by affluent neighborhoods certainly didn’t help to draw today’s mall-minded customers. But the market is experiencing a resurgence of sorts lately.

Pasar Santa (AKA Santa Modern Market) is becoming the talk of the town, trending heavily on social media platforms, and in real life.

Although the look is still more or less the same, new blood is injecting a new lease of life for the old marketplace with exciting ventures.

The upper floor is becoming a haven for young entrepreneurs to start their hip businesses; from vinyl records, vintage clothing, toys, and of course, food and beverages.

It all started with A Bunch of Caffeine Dealers or ABCD, a barista-school-cum-coffee-shop that pioneered the resurgence of Pasar Santa. Like many of the stores here, ABCD is open only on certain days, and you need to check their social media accounts to know when they’re open for business.

Another interesting thing about ABCD, there’s no specific price on the drink you order. Simply put your money inside a gratuity box, however much you think your coffee is worth. And its damn good coffee!

After ABCD, a couple of vinyl stores opened their doors in the neighboring stalls, and soon other business owners followed suit, making Pasar Santa a hip and happening place to be in town.

In terms of food, the market has just about everything. Like Korean food? There’s Bbo Bbo Kogi. Mexican? Papricano is the way to go. Craving a Sloppy Joe? Check out Sloppy Bro! For local fare, you can’t get more traditional than Kedai Nasi Ibu Pi’ah which has been serving tasty warteg-style food for many years, way before the new bloods arrived.

Another newer, similar joint that has been a big hit is Kedai Aput. The food here is just like my mom used to make. With a revolving menu, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised with the delicious spread everyday; from Rawon, Sop Buntut, Siomay, all the way to refreshing drinks like Es Kunyit Asem and Es Bir Pletok! All highly recommended!

Legoh is another popular joint that was opened recently. The squid ink-infused Nasi Goreng Item is super scrumptious, the Lele Cabe Ijo has a flavorful kick, and the Keju Aroma Es Krim is a perfect coda to your meal.

Speaking of desserts, the market has plenty to satisfy your sweet cravings. The Zucker Waffle made some mean, well, waffles. And for Crème Brulee with a blow torch, go to Labruletory! Then have a chat over tasty Acehnese coffee at Warung Kopi Gayo.

Whether you’re young or young-at-heart, Pasar Santa is truly a feast for the senses. One more point though, don’t forget to visit the more traditional stores downstairs as well!
