Welcome to The Beat Jakarta. I think we can all agree that our biggest enemy in this city is the traffic jam, or as the locals say, macet. We’d like to praise our governor, Jokowi, who has the nerve to go up against the central government regarding the issue that is helping to cause more macet ― the low cost green car (LCGC). LCGC is basically a national policy to produce cheap cars, and here’s the kicker; it comes with no premium tax. Jokowi has said the obvious solution for the city’s acute traffic situation is cheap mass transport, and not cheap personal cars. The central government claims LCGC is to curb the gasoline subsidy as LCGC cars are not allowed to use subsidised fuel. Obviously if there were a proper public transportation system then there would be no discussion on what type of fuel was used to begin with. Then there is the reasoning to give incentive to grow the local automotive industry, where the word “creating jobs” and “export” are being thrown around a lot. Although a novel idea, the majority of the automotive industry is owned by foreigners and there is not much transfer of knowledge going on. And in regards to export, we’re pretty sure that the local market will absorb most of the production, leaving a small fraction going overseas. Then there is the issue of the term “green” car itself, which is usually coined for a hybrid or electric cars, unfortunately the LCGCs uses a combustion engine with no “green” technology but just a smaller horsepower. So unfortunately the “green” in LCGC is only as far as the paint job. Lastly, the government mentioned that they took two years to plan LCGC and claim it’s foolproof. For this we have to say if only the government used the same amount of time, effort and budget to solve the public transportation issue, the city would definitely be one of the best cities on earth today. So once again we would like to show our support to Jokowi and his plight to develop the city’s public transportation system and hope the proponents of LCGC can see the light.

SCOOP Indonesia Red versus United Red A group of Manchester United former greats will fly into Jakarta on October 23 for an exhibition match against a team of Indonesian players at Gelora Bung Karno. “Peter Schmeichel will be the team manager,” said R. Sasikumar, a managing director at Red Card, the agency that will organize the MU visit. “We are also still in talks with Paul Scholes. In total, we have 14 players but we will announce the full squad shortly.” Former greats such as Dwight Yorke, Ronny Johnsen and Jesper Blomqvist will be on the teamsheet taking on Indonesia’s Red, which apparently stands for “Retired Extremely Dangerous,” in a friendly match the promoter is calling the “Battle of Red”. Oktoberfest Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival celebrating the drinking of beer held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the original Munich event. With over 11 million friends on Facebook, a million followers on Twitter, close to 300 million hits on YouTube, his globally syndicated Club Life radio show as well as his Club Life iTunes artist podcast (#1 music podcast globally), Tiësto has truly become a universal phenomenon. Tiesto is in Jakarta on October 4 and David Trauts spoke to him before he arrived. You appear to have a grinding schedule this year. You’ve just been through the United States, a complete Asian tour and then after this, back to sell out shows in Europe and The States again. Is this your usual touring schedule or a special year? Tiesto: No this is how my year typically goes!

Your latest compilation album, Club Life Volume 3: Stockholm was released a few months ago. The first two Club Life albums were dedicated to US cities, Las Vegas and Miami. What is your connection with the Swedish capital?
On your latest compilation there are a few pop sounding remixes like “I Love It” or “Clarity”, some classic anthems, and then some more tougher tracks like “Shocker” or “Back to Acid”. What can the Jakarta crowd expect from you compared to your last visit here?
T: It's a beautiful place with amazing culture and people. For dance music it's

inger and actress Uli Auliani and DJ Delizious Devina have joined together to form a duo called Sexicon and recently released a new single called Sex Icon, which is now available to download from digital stores worldwide. We chatted with these iconic ladies about the project and more.
TB: Uli, is Sexicon your new focus or just a part time thing? Uli: It’s my new serious project with Devina. We plan to make an album, the second single is coming soon and a video clip is on the way. TB: How did you two meet and how long have you been friends? Devina: We’ve been friends for more than two years. We first met at a rave party when Uli was doing live PA with me. TB: Is this the first time you have been involved with dance music, Uli? Uli: I have released three singles before but the genre was pop, pop dance and rock dance. So yes, this is the first time I’ve done dance music. And I think it’s the first time there’s been a duo DJ and vocalist together in Indonesia.
TB: And how is it being a sex symbol in Indonesia? Devina: Well the public creates that image not us. As for Uli, she always gets the sexy bitchy look movie roles like Java Heat, Scandal, Virgin, and Maskot. And they think I’m the sexy image of the female DJ with all my freaky outfits and making sexy music. So we are both sex icons/ symbols in a different way. Uli: At first it was difficult to accept being a sex icon because people think it’s a bad image in Indonesia, not like over in Hollywood for example. Many women try hard and can have that image over there but this is Indonesia with so many different cultures, viewpoints and strong Muslim beliefs. It’s complicated. But as time went on, I have learned to enjoy it because no matter how hard I tried to change my image it’s difficult to do so. The lyrics from the song are written from my own experience.
TB: So why did you move to electronic dance music, Uli? Uli: I didn’t move, I’m still singing all genres of TB: It must be tough on one side and kind of cool on the other. music. ala Karmela isn’t the same singer you used to know. Having released one generic commercial pop album, the girl better known as Lala, has returned to the scene of her crimes and decided to show the more artistic side of herself by way of Between Us. According to Lala, getting other songwriters to write her material is history, at least for the most part. This time around, she presents her own stuff with help from one of the finest young music producers in Indonesia, Joseph “Iyub” Saryuf, who already proved his “guru” status with Santamonica, BRNDLS, The Porno, Blackwood Sun, and Roman Foot Soldiers.
The Jakarta-based singer thinks that Between Us is one of her best creations in her entire career. New label, Sinjitos Records, enabled this new honest-to-Lala album approach. Consisting of eight songs where Lala explores deeper than she’s tried in past recordings, musically speaking. She’s excited to be able to prove that she can extend herself, visiting different musical influences, while still very much moving around pop’s corridor. On the first song—which is also the first single—”Morning Star” Lala goes sophisti-pop a la Swing Out Sister and Lisa Stansfield-lite. On the second, “Between Us”, she goes all out indie pop (a perfect sound track to her usual image: singing while playing guitar). On the third—picked as the second single— ”Berkilau” she’s all girly girl performing tunes to the style of a Sunday morning breeze. And the rest? She mixes jazz, adult contemporary, alternative rock, and even adds a little glorious choir, which makes for quite a colorful album.

Speaking about themes, Lala isn’t straying too far from life and love. In “I Don’t Know What to Wear” she finds a way to make a light topic sound heavy and meaningful. She manages to question which clothes should be worn for going on a date, but with a heavy musical arrangement: a modern big band jazz composition. Her father is Indonesian and mother Filipino. On April 2, 1985, Lala began her career in entertainment via youthoriented sinetron. From television she jumped to music by joining the band, Inersia, with whom she released an album called Bersama. Her video clip with the band attracted Warner Music Philippines who offered her a contract to release
a solo album. Contract in hand, Lala relocated to the Philippines to pursue a career. While in the process of publishing her solo debut, Stars, she sang from one Manila bar to the next, slowly building her reputation within the Philippine music circuit. In 2010 she released a cover song in Indonesia, “Satu Jam Saja”, as a soundtrack to a movie with the same name. “Satu Jam Saja” was followed up in 2011 with a full-length album, Kamu, Aku, Cinta (under Sony Music Indonesia), and there you have it; Lala’s story. Jakarta’s Hottest Playground: SCBD Although technically in South Jakarta, the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD) is very much considered as the city’s most central location today. It is home to the Indonesian Stock Exchange and the headquarters of many Fortune 500 companies. Its latest progression is to become the urban jungle’s newest
playground, where two establishments, Foundry No.8 and Fairgrounds, are currently creating a buzz. These two venues are only a brief 10 minute walk away from each other so it should be easy for anyone to explore both places at any given night. And although both have similar offerings, each establishment manages to carve its own unique identity.
Just in case you were wondering, no, this is no iron workshop, nor is there Foundry number one to seven somewhere around town. Foundry No.8 opened just last year and its owners instinctfully describe it as a “collective retail space”- which simply means that Foundry No.8 is home to various restaurants, shops, and clubs. Restaurants here vary from Smokey Ribs, to Canos, a Spanish tapas bar, to the Californian-themed Wilshire. Canos is most likely the first place in town serving Armagnac cocktails, and amongst the few daring enough to put Absinthe on its drinks menu. Foundry No. 8 is home to unique individual shops that are cleverly created from different colored containers, all individually placed in an unorganized manner. The shops sell various products, mainly clothing lines from up-andcoming designers and different independent clothing brands (hipsters galore). Upstairs, Level II is the city’s hottest function space, where it has a rugged industrial warehouse look, perfectly poised to serve
the underground music scene. The latest addition to Foundry No.8 is Emperica, a dance club which is set to be the hottest club this city has to offer. The white-washed venue has one of the longest bars we’ve seen, where the DJ tracks are accompanied by video mapping lasers tracing through the faux windows.

Open a couple of years ago, Fairgrounds sits on the grounds of former infamous club Bengkel Night Park. The transformation is a successful one, as it is now Jakarta’s coolest hangout spot and lost its dodgy image. A slew of 20s and early 30s aged patrons flock here for their fix of good food and music on any given night. Fairgrounds food options are only a handful, but that of yuppie-approved quality; on the roof sits Lucy in the Sky bar lounge, and below it is the all day dining Goods Diner restaurant where it has several branches around town. Next to it is Potato Head Garage restaurant with its much talked about 25-meter high ceiling and its all-toomany chandeliers. Dance club Fable upstairs is one of the city’s most happening and expensive clubs in town today, where it gets uber packed on weekends, predominantly filled with college kids. An alcoholic beverage supplier described the Fable crowd as a “high quality crowd”- which we translate to good looking and carry a fat wallet.
One other entertainment venue worth a mention in SCBD aside from Foundry No.8 and Fable is the re-opening of Hard Rock Café late last month in the Pacific Place mall, located near both Foundry No.8 and Fairgrounds. www.beatmag.com

CLASSICAL choir: Jakarta Oratorio Society will have the opportunity to perform some beautiful choir compositions made by Goudimel, Pachelbel and Mendelssohn. Out of their usual habit, Aula SimfoniaJakarta added a solo vocal piece composition by Rachmaninoff called “Vocalise” into this concert program. Published in 1912 as the last of Rachmaninoff’s Fourteen Songs, Op. 34, this song contains no words, but it is sung using one vowel (of the singer’s choosing). He dedicated this song to soprano Antonia Nezhdanova and to honor this, Aula Simfonia Jakarta invited a Russian soprano from Leningrad, Natalia Kumkova, to sing this piece. tarting from this month, all the temperate countries around the world are welcoming the arrival of autumn as a prelude to winter that will come in a couple of months. As the sun is getting less time shining on the Northern Hemisphere, we instead will see the starting of the opera and classical music season in around Europe, the United States and even to Hong Kong.
Aside from their monthly program, Aula Simfonia Jakarta will also present maestro pianist Ananda Sukarlan in concert. The maestro who was hailed by the Sydney Morning Herald as “One of the world’s leading pianists and has been at the forefront of championing new piano music” is invited by Aula Simfonia Jakarta to perform his most renowned work, Rapsodia Nusantara. Based on Indonesian folk songs, the Rapsodia Nusantara series offer new perspectives on the virtuosity of piano playing. At this concert, Ananda Sukarlan will perform live for the first time, his newest Rapsodia Nusantara no. 10 based on the Balinese song: Janger.
In Jakarta, we can start the autumn season by heading to Aula Simfonia Jakarta for some classical music moments. Going out from their comfort zone of performing heavenly music compositions, Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s upcoming concert on October 5 is somehow refreshing. An array of famous classical music Ananda will also perform his other famous by famous composers from Haydn and Mozart compositions at this concert, which makes it to Goudimel, Pachelbel, Mendelssohn and a great reason to not miss this concert. Rachmaninoff are selected as the program Haydn and Mozart for this concert. Surprisingly, they even 5 October 2013 starting from added a solo vocal piece (aside from choral) 17.00 onwards into the program. Aula Simfornia Jakarta Lead by Dr. Billy Kristanto and Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, the resident orchestra of Aula Simfonia Jakarta will perform Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D Major, where Dr. Billy himself will play the solo piano. Once Travis’ 1999 breakthrough The Man Who (and, later, its passable 2001 follow up The Invisible Band) had established Mssrs: Healy, Payne, Dunlop and Primrose as the great white hope to outsell a faltering Oasis, the Glasgow foursome dutifully packed up their guitars and toddled off on a whopping 237 gig world tour, to take their brand of melancholic indie-pop to the masses in person. Unfortunately, by the time they made it back to the studio for albums three through six, everyone had forgotten who they were, and guitar-driven melancholy was no longer in vogue unless you were either Coldplay or Snow Patrol. It didn’t matter that Chris Martin and Gary Lightbody both cited Travis as a major musical influence, the new guard had taken over and it seemed that there was nothing left for them to do but retire to the sofa and fill out their P45s. Happily, after a five-year hiatus, the lads have returned on improved form with their seventh album Where You Stand, which shows they are still capable songwriters with the added bonus of heightened maturity and depth. Fran Healy’s vocals sound pleasantly reassuring from the get go: “Why did we wait so long?” he ponders on the opening “Mother”, which swells from folky acoustic finger pick to confident and assured crescendo, replete with upbeat drums and vigorous piano strokes. From there, “Reminder” and title track “Where You Stand” are both simple yet disarmingly heartfelt ballads that continue the niceties, while “Warning Sign”, with it’s choral flourishes and stuttering guitar, and the touching “Boxes” channel the spirit of early Elbow. Bottom line, Where You Stand is nice. Pleasant. Warm. Like putting on a pair of slippers that have been on the radiator. Trouble is, not everyone likes ‘nice’. Plenty will disagree and shelve the whole thing as ‘boring’, but despite all that, it seems pop’s prodigal sons have returned, and I for one say it’s nice to see them back. Dan Ashcroft

STYLE Grungy Effect EVERYBODY loves a drop of the 90s. And its key ingredients? An oversized parka atop a glamorous dress shimmering from beneath and a beanie on your head to keep the cold out. Those tiles, however, did play out as enlarged prints across tunic dresses, sassily slit at the thigh and with huge leather gaiter-style boots and trousers below them. This is a collection that very cleverly combines artisan effects and crafts with contemporary and street style – a cropped jumper is layered with a sheer bandeau top, a tunic, skinny trousers and an oversized leather jacket. It all had that just-thrown-on quality about it which, let’s face it, is the look we all strive to achieve. Gone from being ultra-cool and carefree (next season the parka will replace the bomber in my opinion) to being more luxe – a perforated leather skirt and a matching top is highly decorative - but then comes the fur draped on your shoulders over sheer chiffons or super decorated dresses for a more evening wear orientated feel. But all the while it maintains that street edge - one which will mean this collection will find itself becoming quite key in creating one of next season’s most accessible “looks”. Insanely Elegant It was insanely elegant and very clever show, with the designer, Philo showing her extreme diversity and with it, that whatever she does she does with focus. The taste level always remains so high even when it is a woven bag you’d use to go to the laundrette now reinvented as a high-neck and loose jumper, coat and fluted knee-length skirt. There was a continuation of the shoulder wrapping and the restraint we saw last season and there were beautiful grey cardigan capes that knotted at the front as if they were separate garments, but weren’t. The shapes are serene and soft, gorgeous coats of peach and pink gently ballooning proportions of each other and jumpers that are shorter at the front than they were at the back in slate and navy. Pockets seamlessly plunged and disappeared into dresses with a series of coats towards the end that came dotted with fluffed detail. Again, a little more ornate for Philo. It was considered yet so effortless - two extremes but in the hands of Philo and her supreme level of elegance and focus it all united quite cleverly. Futuristic Temperaments To be square in fashion means anything but boring – just ask Francisco Costa who squared off his Calvin Klein Collection silhouettes to sharp and slick effect for an autumn/winter 201314 collection that put cadet fashion forward for the new season. These were shoulders and elbows you wouldn’t want to get in the way of, but there were coats and dresses and skirts that you’d certainly want to wear – a military luxe taking precedence here for a starker turn than we saw last season, which was more sensual in tone. It was modern and minimalist – for that’s what the Calvin brand is all about – and we saw a continuation of the spring/summer 2013 trend for plaid, sometimes just quietly providing the backdrop to one of its stealthy coats and other times transformed into a perforated lattice effect for the actual construction of those leather skirts. It was a clever and accessible take on the trend for sci-fi which so often wanders down the wrong road and looks too much like its wearers are actually joining Star Trek’s Star Fleet. STYLE MODERN LOOK The Sergio Rossi Fall-Winter 2013-14 collection ideated by creative director Francesco Russo finds inspiration in one forceful idea: the exaltation of the shoe as an expression of architectonic design. Distinctive shapes and colors give way to a set of structural components that assume the dominant role in that they are – and shall remain – which ultimately define the shoe. Both striking examples and signature items of the new Sergio Rossi collection is a spike-heel pump with set steel support cage (gem-set mode) between heel and sole. While surely a decorative feature, this cage is also a keenly functional element since, no differently from the metal frameworks essential to building construction, it supports the delicate structure of the shoe. In line with the concept of simplicity or pure clean design underpinning the collection, the palette contains black, white and nude hues only. As for materials, the use of python in addition to classic leather and suede depends on this snakeskin’s particular check-like texture, which enhances and highlights the graphic effects and underscores the geometric gaps of the shoe. Lastly, pink gold and steel – metals with an effective connection to the realm of architecture – top off the collection’s mood to perfection. It was a tactile, tough and sexy collection - more overt and gritty in its tactics than last season’s Seventies louche and loose attitude. It was harsh and sexy and these women in their plunging V-neckline svelte dresses, high neckand-tight jacket combinations, and waist-lined dresses somehow managed to make it prim just as much as they did dangerous - Hitchcock heroines let loose in The Matrix future. Lilac, turquoise and pink, flusters of feathers cascaded down skirts or splayed on arms from mesh and lace, silky skirts of long and short length or trousers for a jumpsuit take beneath. A contrast to the rest of the collection for its light and delicate treatments, the evening wear was still just as cinematic and as a result cohesively joined the dots - the femme fatale in all her many Gucci incarnations. STYLE Fashion First is home to a very impressive roster of labels, but here are three we at The Beat enjoy plenty: Friederich Herman Here’s a guy who has been on my wishlist since he first came on my radar! I’m a big fan of structures, clean lines, and blazers, which is why houses like Raoul, Celine, and now Friederich Herman hold very special places in my heart. This relatively new line was established in January 2012 by the eponymous designer, who won the 2011 Lomba Perancang Mode Femina. Born in East Java and graduating with a BFA in Fashion from the University of Huddersfield in 2011, he has come to master structured, straightforward blazers while injecting a strong dash of color or pattern where needed. Mel Ahyar Pret a Porter Mel was very recently initiated into IPMI (Council of Indonesian Fashion Designers) alongside Dany Satriadi and Yogie Pratama. We interviewed her following her set at the opening night of Fashion Nation earlier this year–so while these photographs are not of the clothes from her prêt-à-porter, there’s always a hint of elegance and playfulness to everything harvested from her imagination. Yosafat Dwi Kurniawan Another young local talent whose work was showcased at this year’s Audi Fashion Nation. I loved his use and ability to manipulate locallysourced materials with a certain weightiness about it–like tweeds and leathers–into complete looks that are always polished and dramatic but never heavy. This is someone who clearly thinks about the philosophy and aesthetic behind his entire collections, going so far as to carefully curate the music selection that lulls the audience into thinking they are watching an art installation instead of a fashion show. ere’s a good tip for you: if you can’t decide whether or not to buy new clothes, just think about the fashion icon whose look you aspire to, and then ask yourself if she/he would buy that particular piece of clothing. This system worked well for me throughout my university years, which is why I looked like Steve Buscemi most of the time. But then my priorities changed when I started becoming obsessed with the idea of a possible zombie apocalypse, and then I started asking a different question: Can I run in it? Today when I struggle with whether or not to buy a certain dress or a cute pair of shoes, the determining factor of that item making it into my wardrobe is entirely dependent on whether or not I can comfortably flee for my life in it while carrying a sledgehammer and a backpack filled with military rations. If you’ve read my articles in the beat or fashionese daily lately, then you have probably figured out that I’m a big, big fan of function–sometimes at the

But where (X) S. M. L. items emphasize measured youthful rebellion and edginess, items from Noir are darker, moodier, and a little bit dressier, as I’m sure you can already tell from its name. ichelle is one of the most famous beauty gurus on YouTube. She can manipulate anyone’s face with nothing but makeup and have them look sexy, innocent, cheerful, colorful, and even anime-ish. If you’re familiar with her channel, then you probably already know how creative she is when it comes to makeup. She started her Youtube channel in 2007, and this year she finally launched her own makeup line: with the help of Carol Hamilton (President of L’Oreal Luxe) and a team affectionately referred to as her sisters and brothers, em michelle phan was launched. To create this makeup line, Michelle traveled to Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, and Australia to gather information and feedback. We tried it on a busy Saturday night, and it was so busy we had to sit at the bar. Being at the bar wasn’t such a bad option since the bistro-style French restaurant is buzzing and being seated at the bar gave us a perfect view as to what was happening. The menu was very French with all the typical provincial and international renowned dishes from cold meats, oysters, tatarine, which are a kind of open sandwich, mussels, salads, meats and fish. eranda is located on the leafy Jalan Ahmad Dahlan, not too far from Pasar Mayestik. Opening in June this year, the place looks like a colonial Melayu house, with quite a lot of homage to the bygone era. You won’t feel like you’re in an old house, though. Elements of contemporary design blend nicely with the retro look. Beranda has two floors, but the main area is upstairs. The terrace looks very cozy, but you might wanna choose a cooler time of day to be there, especially with the (mostly) spicy dishes. The menu items here are mainly Melayu Medan favorites. The owner is actually Javanese, but her family lived in Medan for a long time and at Beranda she wanted to create the comfort food of her younger years.

The Roti Jala Kari Ayam (40k) or Roti Jala Kari Kambing (50k) is an excellent starter, so too the Lontong Medan (40k) or Roti Bakar Srikaya (20k). For the main course, the Ikan Sale Balado Set Menu (60k) is to die for! The ikan sale is a favorite in Sumatra; and they cook it in such a way that you can eat the whole body like a cracker! The smoky aroma is also wonderful. The set comes with rice, teri kacang balado and sambal. It also comes with a really tasty vegetable dish called sayur ubi tumbuk. Die die must try! The Kakap Merah Sambal Matah (50k) or spicy snapper is another winner here. The succulent fish is topped with a Balinese-style chili mix. And if you like fish head, try the curry dish Gulai Kepala Kakap Set Menu (135k).

The Aceh-style chicken Ayam Tsunami Set Menu (50k) is also getting quite popular. And for a more familiar fare, there’s Sop Buntut Beranda (55k) and three kinds of Nasi Goreng. Lovers of Western fare won’t feel left out at Beranda. From the Mushroom Soup (35k) to the Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken (35k) or with Salmon (45k) all the way to light bites like the Asiatic Calamari (45k), Breaded Mushroom (35k), Buffalo Chicken Wings (45k), or Nachos (50k), there’s something for everyone. They also do great mains such as the Lamb Shank (105k) or Grilled Salmon with Lemon Sauce (85k). We ordered the Tenderloin Steak (135k) and chose the butter and crispy garlic marinade,Thai salad, and mashed potato on the side. We love the marinade and the potato, but the salad needed a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’. The Kue Cubit Ice Cream (25k) was a delectable mix of local and Western tastes. The street dessert snack kue cubit blended well with the vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. The Es Beranda (25k) was a drink made with coconut, nata de coco, jelly, and syrup. It reminded us of a nice buka puasa beverage. But we really love the bok choy (yes, the vegetable) and pineapple mix called the Green Light (30k). Really refreshing! There are plenty of beers and cocktails available, too. And the Swiss Chocolate Martini (95k) is one of the favorites here. We also need to mention that Beranda has a state-of-the-art coffee machine from The Beranda Netherlands called Kees van der Westen. The Jl. Kopi Kitchen is located in Lippo Mall Kemang, and it was opened on the very auspicious date of December 12, 2012 (12/12/12). The mall itself is new, but it’s already becoming the new favorite in the south of town. And judging by the crowd at Kopi Kitchen on our visit, business is booming. The décor is simple, dominated by light colored wood of the furniture and the floor. With a relaxed feel, it’s a fine venue for intimate get togethers and cozy chats. The patio seating area outside is perfect for enjoying a nice late afternoon/early evening. Being a ‘kopi’ place, the selections of coffee and tea are plentiful. There’s your regular Espresso (23k), Black (23k), or Latte (30k), but they also have the more local Kopi Oh (21k) and Kopi Tarik Welcome to a cool (27k). And other than the English Breakfast, coffee shop which Peppermint, or Japanese Green Tea (21k, blends international respectively), they also serve Teh Tarik (25k) and local flavors and Hot Chocolate (32k).

Swiss designer and entrepreneur Yves Béhar presents the August Smart Lock, an innovative and sharplooking piece of smart home technology that allows you to control your locks using a smartphone app. How it works is that you install the device on the interior side of your door, which is still outfitted with the original deadbolt so that you can still get in using physical keys if necessary. However, where the app/ locking device shines is the ability to send virtual keys through to guests, negating the cost, inconvenience and risk carried by duplicating physical keys. Naturally, when dealing with something as important as home security while making it as convenient as the tap of a touchscreen, the app also includes additional features such as the ability to set a time limit for the virtual keys, to disable them, and to even log when your guests have used them. Olympus OM-D E-M1 Camera Olympus has just unveiled its latest Micro Four Thirds camera aimed at prosumers, the OM-D E-M1 camera. The mirrorless camera features a magnesium alloy body that is dust-proof, freeze-proof, water-resistant and extremely durable, making this camera a great choice for photographers who find themselves shooting in the great outdoors. Housed within the durable body is a 16 megapixel MOS sensor and the camera also packs in features like image stabilization, quick and accurate autofocus, and built-in WiFi. A range of lenses ensure that you can always get the shot you need. The OM-D E-M1 camera is set to go on sale in October with prices starting at $1,400 USD.
R/C Space Messenger This is the ballpoint pen that laser-scans documents as easily as it scribes notes. A high-precision auto-focus lens and 5-megapixel sensor built into the pen scan letters, recipes, or important documents as crisp, clear 2048 x 1536 pixel images. Pressing the shutter button halfway projects a visible red laser frame onto a document, and the pen automatically focuses the image just before the picture is taken. The device has 1 GB of built-in flash memory that holds up to 1,000 scanned pictures in JPEG format and the pen also captures voice memos in WAV format with the integrated microphone. Twisting the pen apart reveals a USB plug that downloads scanned images to a computer. Made from anodized aluminum, the pen switches from writing to scanning mode with a turn of a dial. Captures up to 300 images after a one-hour charge via USB. Compatible with Mac OSX, Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP. Includes a leather case and ink cartridge. 6 1/2” L x 2/3” Diam. (2 oz.)
