On Saturday, November 16 The Beat Jakarta held the final round of The Hottest Girl of the Year contest at Red Square, Senayan. The crowd went wild as 10 finalists graced the long table-slash-catwalk and brought out their best moves to impress guests, and especially the judges. The judges were looking for the hottest most natural moves mixed with a slice of sensuality and good looks and attire if nothing else. At the end of the night saw Ms. Indah of Padang take home Rp 10 million prize money, and not to mention bragging rights title of The Beat’s Hottest Girl of the Year. Wulan and Ana came second and third, but all of the girls up on stage that night were as hot as hell and it was a great show. Next year The Beat will take the competition up a notch by holding preliminary rounds in some big cities all over the country. Avril Lavigne Live in Jakarta 2014 Marygops Studios has officially announced that Avril Lavigne will once again come to Jakarta. “We are pleased to announce to all Avril Lavigne fans in Indonesia that the multi-talented artist will be coming back to Jakarta in March 2014,” said Shaane Harjani, as managing director of Marygops Studios. The “Avril Lavigne Asia Tour 2014” is set to promote her recently released self titled album Avril Lavigne. FEATURE ou’re probably already familiar with the forecast made by the World Bank (and echoed by other organisations) that Jakarta is likely to become totally engulfed in traffic gridlock by 2014.

As the New Year is less than a month away, many of you will likely be thinking, “Forget about 2014, gridlock has been here for some time already!” With hordes of low-cost “green” cars and motorcycles destined to hit the mean streets in a seemingly unstoppable flow, and the two rail-based public transport networks at least two years away, total gridlock could arrive in the metropolis sooner rather than later. The earliest year in which the monorail would be completed is 2016 while for the mass rapid transit (MRT) system it’s 2017. During the construction phases, congestion is likely to be even worse for a while.

Here are some options: Walk to work: given the unbearably hot weather in the city and the high levels of pollution, this is really only an option for those who live less than a mile from their workplace. Combine it with an ojek (motorcycle taxi) trip and you could be onto a winner. You will also learn all about the shortcuts through back alleys that you never even knew existed ... Start taking ojek or bajaj: The two-wheeled taxis can thread their way through the most mindboggling macet. If you have a regular journey, you can forge an inexpensive deal with the driver, who will be more than happy to have regular work. To be honest I like to flirt with a lot of different genres in my DJ sets because that’s what keeps it interesting for me.. Sometimes when the vibe is right, I even go back to my roots and play some hip hop or dancehall records in my sets!

FEATURE How did the term “Dirty Dutch” come about? What does it mean to you? Chuckie: Basically, I wanted to create my own event where I could play whatever I wanted. I came up with the name Dirty Dutch because I was inspired at the Dutch streetculture. The “dirty” stands for street. I just wanted the musical selection for my own Dirty Dutch events way more genre crossing instead of just one genre getting played all night. Nowadays Dirty Dutch is more of a musical platform to help new talented artists launch their career. They say you are the great conduit from hip hop to house and to the new commercial EDM music. David Guetta was quoted as saying about you, “He is mixing the hip hop vibe with house music like no one else!” Would you agree with all that? Chuckie: In a certain way I can understand why people say that. My way of mixing comes from a hip hop mind state. Even if I don’t play a single hip hop record in a set, you can still hear that I sneak some basic elements of turntablism while playing. But in general, I like to juggle, cut, scratch or even grab a microphone while I’m playing and that’s all hip hop inspired. What was the smallest gig you played this year? Chuckie: I played on a private party for 30 people on New Year’s in Sydney, Australia. Smallest crowd but some big names like Leonardo Di Caprio, Jamie Foxx and Emanuelle Chriqui (Sloan from Entourage) were there and having the time of their lives... How about the biggest? Chuckie: I did a lot of festivals this year but the biggest one was definitely

Tomorrowland in Belgium. I think there were like 70,000 people there during my set.. Which show was the best? Chuckie: The best show for me was the new Festival I started this year in Aruba called Electric Festival. I’m not saying that because it’s my own festival but because it was the first and the biggest electronic music festival in the Caribbean. The vibe was incredible and you could feel the intensity of it because the people were waiting for this for such a long time. I also think it’s a great step for electronic music. When was the moment you felt you had made it to the big time? And how did it feel? Chuckie: To be honest I never had that moment in my career. But there were a couple of moments where I was like “woooow, I must be doing something right!” For example the day that Puff Daddy called me to join him in a couple of studio sessions. Or the day that Enrique Iglesias called me to personally ask me if I wanted to remix one of his songs. The list goes on. I had people like Gloria Estefan, Missy Elliot, T-Pain, Akon and many others calling me to collaborate together. I also did a studio session with SwizzBeats but the craziest moment was when Timbaland called me and said that he would love to do a project with me. For me that’s a big deal! I’m waiting for Jay Z to call me, haha! I saw that Hardwell topped the DJmag 100 last month and you dropped 8 points. What does that mean, no more tips for Hardwell?? Chuckie: I’ve been supporting Hardwell for longer than 10 years now. He was that kid that everybody knew he was somebody special and we should support www.beatmag.com

him. In his early days I was more like his big brother and showed him the ways in the Dutch scene. I always had a great connection with his parents, who always attended his shows because he was too young to drive and to go alone to shows. I’m happy he made it to that number one spot because he truly is talented. For anyone who disagrees, they probably don’t know how far he came! You had Slash from Guns and Roses on stage with you at Tomorrowland 2013. How did that come about? And do you think rock music has a place in EDM and has a future at all? Chuckie: Me and Slash are good friends, I know him and his wife well. Last year I celebrated Thanksgiving at his house and during dinner we decided to give it a try. So we booked a studio in Los Angeles and started jamming. Electronic music nowadays is fusing with a lot of different genres. I think there’s a place for every genre to fuse with electronic music, even for rock music. You have just released a new single called “Skydive”, featuring Maiday. Pretty good, banging club track I must say. How about the girls in the video? They seem like fun too. Do you know them and do you play very often in Ibiza? Chuckie: The main girl in the video is Amanda Cerny, she is a playboy model and one of the hardest working females I know in the game.

We’ve been friends for around two years and we’re working on different projects together. I felt really honored when she said she wouldn’t mind to appear in my video. We shot the video at the very beginning of this summer season. It was during the opening of my weekly resident club night at Pacha Ibiza. Such an iconic place. As far as I can remember it was also my longest summer season ever! We started in April and closed the season in October.. Are you surprised at how the Dirty Dutch or EDM sound has taken over the world in the last year or so? Chuckie: I’m not surprised of the fact that it took over the world because it’s just great music but I’m surprised of how fast it took over the world. First we were all a bunch of nerds, playing with sounds in our own studios, garages and bedrooms and now it’s multi-million dollar industry. It’s huge here in Jakarta right now. You’ve been here a few times already, anything new we can expect at your show at Dragonfly on December 7? Chuckie: I’m really looking forward to my show in Jakarta, the crowd is amazing and so is the local food! As far as music, I will play a lot of new songs and remixes I’ve been working on. But my set will definitely be a good old Chuckie set. So expect a high energy dirty funkin’ house music set!

ne gig after another, Superman Is Dead is constantly on the road, almost always away from home and, thus, until recently, the Bali-born and raised three-chord combatants have had next to zero spare time to get their heavily tattoo’d bods back into the recording studio. The last time the Kuta boys released an album, Angels and the Outsiders, was in February 2009. That was four years ago, a figure which represents the longest interval between albums in the entire history of the band. Well, the good news that you’ve been waiting for has been and gone. Yes, the wait is over, because, just a few weeks ago, otherwise described as this past October, the biggest punk rock band in Indonesia smacked us down with their latest opus: Sunset di Tanah Anarki.

Released through Sony Music Indonesia, the album consists of 17 songs—the most songs ever to be released on a single SID album. Staying true to their beliefs, Bobby Kool, Jon Eka Rock, and JRX, remain passionate in their fight for humanism, pacifism, pluralism and issues of equality. Choosing “Jadilah Legenda” as their first single represents an obvious statement about their idealism and the official videoclip for the track is an attempt to illustrate the strong support towards Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, the official national motto of Indonesia which means “unity in diversity,” to respect multiculturalism. Founded in 1995, Superman Is Dead, were drawn together by a common love of Green Day and NOFX, and their immediate underground cult status eventually transformed the trio from Kuta bums into darlings on the national scene. Their journey from punks to punk rock mega stars officially began after signing with Sony Music Indonesia in 2003. Perhaps SID is proof that when you throw a love of anarchy into the mix, a little bit of Kuta can go a long way. To date, they’ve released nine albums, including one, 1997-2009, released on vinyl. Liked by more than 4 million in-your-face fans, SID holds the record for the most Facebook fans in Indonesian rock music.

So what’s with the anarchy? Let’s pass the mic to JRX: “Our desire for change, for the better, shall forever remain our eternal spirit, and anarchy as the trigger. We used the word anarchy as the liberation channel, as an attempt to transform anarchy into an advanced form of love—to help our home (Bali) from cultural, environmental, economic destruction.” The fight against such catastrophe has become an effective stimulant for the band’s songwriting process. “This unhappy world, has become a solid catalyst, and we produced tons of new songs because of that. Fred Alloysius is a well known publican around the city with famed ventures like Aphrodite in Rasuna Kuningan, Kinara and Fez in Kemang and the new-ish Liquid Exchange in the Epicentrum Mall, Kuningan, providing a mainly expat, but also a local Indonesian, crowd what they want in food and entertainment. Always being a great supporter of The Beat magazine, we sat down to have a chat with this Indian born Singaporean, former DJ and general bon-vivant about what makes him and his business tick.

FEATURE Let’s start from the beginning. Where are you from? Fred: I was born in India and moved to Singapore when I was 11 and became Singaporean after two years of national service in the army. What brought you to Jakarta the first time? Fred: The Intercontinental now Borobudur Hotel employed me to DJ at The Music Room. What kind of music were you playing back then? Fred: I came here in 1995 and although I started with top 40, pop and techno, I quickly realized that house music was the in-thing and so switched to house. Since the hotel was closing for major renovations close to when I arrived, we didn’t have a budget for new music. So I used to mix from vinyl records to cassettes and vice versa. Then when the hotel closed in late '95, I was offered to DJ in The Dusit Mangga Dua. So how long were you DJing around the traps? Fred: My DJing days were mostly in Singapore and then only about two years in Jakarta. I had a stint in Bangkok for almost a year, but then came back to Jakarta. How was the Jakarta nightlife back then? When I first arrived, I was involved in the local scene. At that time it was all about going from club to club to club. We’d start off in Music Room and then move our way around from there. It would be M Club in Blok M Plaza, and then usually to a club in Kota called Atlanta. That place was like a smaller Stadium of today and it was part of the Indo party circuit of the time. When that closed you’d go to Ebony in Rasuna Said. That would open at 1 o’clock in the afternoon so you can imagine what that place was like. It was all about the house music and those were the places. Other clubs like Top 10, Terminal 1, Parkir were also happening. Were these places open all hours? No, nothing like that. They all had their own opening and peak hours, which would link up and the crowd would follow it around. Were there many foreigners around the clubs back then? Foreigners were in their own world like Blok M, Malawai, Lintas and Tambora. The younger ones would go to places like Tanamor, Jaya Pub or Tavern for the cooler scene. They were places with live music and everyone would have a drink. Girls were always around too. Later came BATS and CJ’S, which quickly became popular with the expat community as well.

FEATURE Where were you working at this point? Hazara. That was an Indian restaurant and it had an expat bar upstairs. That’s where I first learnt about the bar business and the expat community. I was there two years helping to manage the bar and spinning some music upstairs. Was the expat community big back then? This was around ’97 just before the economic crisis. There were many but that changed quickly after the crisis. They couldn’t afford to pay them dollars anymore. After that I moved to the live music venue, BB’s in Menteng. I was managing that place from ‘99 to 2001. When did you start getting involved in your own bars and restaurants? Fred: I opened Aphrodite in 2001 with some partners and a Swiss chef, Daniel. I had the pleasure of expats following me from Hazara then BB’s to Aphrodite but we did struggle for the first couple of years. At first it was a bar and a separate restaurant but that didn’t work so eventually we created a single bar and that was a success. We then started pushing the sports on TV which was also very popular. Later we took over Fez and Kinara in Kemang.

having ladies nights helps. They have always been our biggest nights. Did you ever want to give it up and go back home? Fred: Nope. Certainly not. What is it most that you like about Jakarta? Fred: The lifestyle. I love it here. Compared to Singapore for example, it has so much to offer. When did you decide Jakarta was the place for you or didn’t you have a choice in the matter? Fred: After living here for three years I couldn’t go back to Singapore and DJ, Jakarta pulls you in and after a while you get sucked in. Many expats I know just don’t want to go home, they will do anything to stay, take any job. It’s about the people too, the way of communication and the Indonesian people are just so warm and friendly.

You have a few projects on the go already, are there more coming soon or do you just sit back now and enjoy the ride? Fred: Nowadays I want to pull back. There are so many places opening around town, Where did the name Aphrodite come from? I’d prefer to just consolidate what we have. We had an aphrodisiac section on our menu However, we are now looking at doing the (and still do) so we decided to call it Aphrodite. December is the month of celebration, regardless of your religion. Whatever your beliefs are, December is the month to be grateful and to look back at what we have achieved for the year. However, put the introspection aside, December is also a month full of various classical and Christmas concerts. Here are some of my selections for this year.

Eastern Light is a theme that Avip Priatna and his orchestra: Jakarta Concert Orchestra chose to open this month. Highlighting on the musical beauty of Asian composers, Eastern Light will presents the works of Chinese composer Chen Gang and He Zhanhao called “The Butterfly Lovers” – a violin concerto, featuring violinist Finna Kurniawati. Another great work by our own composer Glenn Bagus Z called Romansa is also part of the program, featuring flutist Metta F. Ariono.

The concert will also feature The Resonanz Children’s Choir performing Taroret by Fero Aldiansya. On top of that all, the award-winning Batavia Madrigal Singers will also perform the works of JoHoon Park called Missa Brevis. Surely, this concert has all the right elements to start the month of December. Aside from working on this concert, Priatna will also conduct his “Wonderful Christmas” concert at Aula Simfonia on December 11. With highlights of various favorite Christmas works for choir and solo artists, Priatnais is going to perform with his full team including Jakarta Concert Orchestra, Batavia Madrigal Singers and The Resonanz Children Choir. Great soloists such as Farman Purnama (tenor), Christine Tambunan (soprano), Teza Sumendra (Indonesian Idol finalist 2006), Isyana, Boy Soprano and Brian Thomas (violin). Organized by PUKAT an organization for Catholic professionals and businessman, this concert’s revenue will be donated to support educational scholarship for the children of Papua and NTT.

The path of pop history is littered with ‘buzz’ bands who crashed onto the scene with a debut that hit all the right notes, only to fizzle out after attempting to recreate that same album two or three more times. Remember Kaiser Chiefs? Von Bondies? The Kooks? It’s not to say that they were crap, more that pop’s fickle finger moves ever quicker pushing those buttons on the hype machine – not to mention a frothing record company looking to keep the revenues flowing. According to Franz Ferdinand front man Alex Kapranos, the three golden rules about how to stay in the game are; don’t go on tour too long, don’t go into the studio without any songs, and don’t stop talking to each other. By the time 2009’s laboured Tonight: Franz Ferdinand rolled round they’d broken all three, and subsequently came within a Brylcreem’d quiff of disbanding. Happily, the snappily-dressed Glasgow outfit seem to have learned their lesson and managed to sidestep the void by keeping Right Words… as lean as Kapranos’ cheek bones. The formula, it seems, is simple: Track average of three and a half minutes (clearly the correct scientific amount of time a pop song should last), groovy riffs that are catchier than a bag of fishing rods, and clutch of sunny harmonies that disguise a mix of existential panic and wry observations on the British condition. “Sometimes I wish you were here, weather permitting” croons Kapranos on the kicking “Right Words”, but the real guilty pleasure is follow up “Evil Eye”, which fuses choppy guitars with 50’s sci-fi kitsch and B-movie horror show ambiance (check out the video for a deliciously gory treat). As usual, the light and dark sides of love and sex are major themes throughout – particularly on “Love Illumination” (“We’re all looking for somebody to love”) and the nonchalant bounce of “Brief Encounters”, which takes place at a seedy suburban swinger’s party at the end of “a certain cul-de-sac”. The dreary reality: “We all choose our partners/We all choose our keys”, and ultimately there’s no real gratification: “Yeah, let’s pretend”. Perhaps the best moment comes on album closer “Goodbye Lovers & Friends”, where, having just churned out 35 minutes of almost faultless pop music, Kapranos declares wickedly: “So don’t play pop music/you know I hate pop music”, before ending the song with the line “This really is the end”. To honor her wish of being buried in Jefferson, everyone in the family is bringing her coffin on a mule-drawn wagon through the countryside, each with their own selfish motives. The journey proves to be a rough one when everything seems to come undone. The multi-talented James Franco is at the director’s helm for this film adaptation of the William Faulkner classic in what seems like a Southern Gothic themed masterpiece.

The Counselor Crime, Drama, Thriller. Director: Ridley Scott. Writer: Cormac McCarthy. Cast: Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt.

By-the-book lawyer, known only as The Counselor (Michael Fassbender) in the film, is pushing his luck by being engaged in a cocaine scam across the Texas-Mexico border. Things start to get out of control for The Counselor or anyone else in this thriller. With a tried and true director (Ridley Scott), an ensemble cast (Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt), and Cormac McCarthy in his screenplay debut, this ought to be one of the most violent and well thought out films of the year. If you liked No Country for Old Men, this movie is one you should pay close attention to.

This movie will have you nostalgic about earlier works of Richard Curtis (Love, Actually), in a more self-indulgent and time travelling way. So, expect a rich narrative imbued with several cute moments. An Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson plays Tim, a 21-year-old who learns from his charming father (Bill Nighy) that all men in his family can travel back in time. The film does not even need to tell us what he will do with it (it has something to do with love, actually). This movie looks like a date night winner. And by winner, we mean a romantic comedy that women will love and men can tolerate.

The Global Power of Chanel

If the world did turn on an actual Chanel axis, it would look a little something like this: high collars on tweed aviatior coats; fluffy pink and teal hats to match; chain-enlaced biker boots or glossy patent styles riding high up the leg to meet a mini or pleated skirt; more coats in pink and black and either belted or cocoon-soft to reiterate the streamlined and aerodynamic shapes that were the focus here. The Stand Out Collection

So out came the most brilliant of leather motorbike jackets that started out worn as normal, but then navigated to being items all of their own that sat specifically down on the waist as though they had been tied around it, unzipping as they went. It was a great and clever riff. But the jackets also came with florals fading into them, roses which then spread out onto flannel lumberjack shirts for a beautiful urban and street take on the Givenchy wardrobe. Keeping it, as he said, real. Sweatshirts featured Bambi and shark jaws motifs and patchworks, and came belted, long sheer skirts trailing below - while more biker jackets and bombers were teamed with flamenco ruffles of skirts in shades of autumn leaves (rust, orange, red and yellow), moody reds and purple to make for a sensual and seductive colour palette. Toggle coats, too, gave a grounding to the collection - all the pieces in it are wearable, even humble, items but reinvented in the most articulate way to once again convey Tisciâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pure vision and his ability to make everything he touches beautiful. But it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t beautiful in the sense that it was pretty, for these clothes came with serious gusto and had something punky about them too. STYLE A Romantic Walk Through The Wilder Side of Burberry Valentine’s Day might not be for some time but that doesn’t mean the romance can’t be woken early. How so? Because we know what Burberry is about - it has the history and it has the heritage and it has the trench, but it also has Bailey who has a very clever knack of coming up with endless ideas with which to reincarnate the house’s staple. Step forward transparent glossy numbers with metal collars and belts to give them a more futuristic and glossy lease of life; leopard spots (yes, really) and love heart prints. There were pencil skirts and plenty of them (no sign of any kilts here) and they came attacked with strands and rivets - this collection was a real lesson in surface exploration, from stripes (red and blue and bold), to those dense strands and then those animal prints, which on one coat were rendered in the same metallic fixtures that anchored collars, cuffs and pockets elsewhere. It was a slick outing and even those animal prints were tamed the Burberry way and never looked over the top, instead they made for a great surprise and brought a polar opposite right on board to the brand. all the design schools that held shows at Jakarta Fashion Week 2014 (JFW), the one school that “gets” ready-to-wear the most is probably ESMOD Jakarta. This is the fifth year that the international fashion university group has participated in JFW, and for good reason too: successful graduates of this school include Major Minor‘s Ambar Pratiwi and Inneke Margarethe, Mel Ahyar, and Jeffry Tan. The

ESMOD Jakarta show at JFW highlighted the latest work of five young alumni who have already made a name for themselves in the business by establishing fashion lines of their own, so it was not only a good opportunity for the school to show off the thriving talent that it trains, but for us to also check out what has been prepared for the consumer in the fashion season to come.

Nez Perhaps a trademark of ESMOD Jakarta graduates is the designers’ propensity and mastery over use of flowy, featherweight materials. The fresh colors and light fabrics in this collection are great for traveling, and remind me a little of the Ardistia New York Resort/SS ’14 show. Designer Shahnaz Soraya graduated in 2010 and for this collection, titled Pop Romance, she was actually inspired by the weird unpredictable weather in Jakarta that has been shifting between rain and heat. Now that it’s been mentioned, this collection really does look great for rain or shine. Imelda Kartini Now here comes a show-stopping event: jaws were dropped and eyebrows slammed into hairlines with every outfit from the Concettismo collection by Imelda Kartini. This winner of ESMOD’s Best Graduate award in 2007 started her eponymous haute couture and bridal line in 2008, and she also happens to be the woman behind ready-to-wear label Bretzel. Kartini arranged for her clothes to be accompanied by headgear from Noriko Emmy, and the sequence started with several ornately embroidered and embellished cheongsams, followed by blood red tent dresses and shift dresses. The outfits that really had the audience gasping for air, however were the tulle ball gowns that looked like they had blood vessels of their own.

STYLE Se… Prints that depict outer space have been a staple of indie/hipster fashion for the past couple of years now, and it doesn’t look like it has plans of stopping anytime soon. Se… by Sere Marini Simanjuntak has decided to go on that route by implementing the outer space pattern against basic black pieces. The Construction Dream collection was inspired by a vision in a dream, which the designer felt was the right time for freeind minds, and she hopes to encourage that through this collection. Established in 2009, these pieces are available at The Goods Dept, Alun-Alun, and Metro.

Sisca Tjong Moving on from casual ready-to-wear to something a little more formal is Sisca Tjong and her peculiarly-named Neo Mythologizm collection. Thankfully, her work was nowhere as stilted as the collection name, and it certainly did set out to attain its goals: inspired by the goddesses of ancient Greek mythology, Tjong presented some lavishly embroidered pieces that played heavily with silhouettes.

Vy by Silvy Dwianti This label has only been around since 2012, but already designer Silvy Dwianti keeps her fans on tender hooks by making every new collection starkly different from the previous one. Where her SS ’13 collection was dominated by bright neons and patterns of all sorts — stripes, houndstooth, and plaid — this latest collection, titled City In The Galaxy, sees simple silver and gray prints on black and white basics. Panels of sheer fabrics appear every now and then too to prevent entire looks from being weighed down by heavy blacks and grays. The straight lines, grayscale, and simple silhouette are a far cry from her previous collections; the variety so far is great and I really hope she keeps up the habit of shaking up looks every season and not fall into the habit of sticking to an aesthetic she is comfortable with, something that Deszell pointed out is the want of some new designers. www.beatmag.com

No More Writers Block with Capital TsFW13 Collection

If you’re not familiar with local label Capital T, you should be. Tertia Enda dropped everything at her full-time job to study at Susan Budihardjo. From there, she founded Capital T with a mission to provide urban professional women the option of having clothes that suit their fast-paced city lifestyle. Capital T recently released Writer’s Block, the label’s F/W ’13 collection, and its press release had this to say:

or this collection, the design was inspired by the term ‘Writer’s Block’ hence the name of the collection. Tertia Enda, the designer, found it enticing how a seemingly dismissive situation could ironically rouse progression on a story, often it even creates new details, new routes, new stories. This idea is represented by how Tertia tried to cut patterns in such ways to create some kind of procrastination feel on her collection and symbolizes the struggle of the author by playing with upside down interlocked triangles. The whole attempt resulted in arcane looks throughout the pieces, thus making this collection captivating both to see and to wear, like the beauty of writer’s block itself.

Forbidden played with squares and also made use of a pale pink shade that went beautifully with corresponding dark blues. Come to think of it, this collection is also home to an identical color palette not dissimilar to the previous one, possibly meaning that the designer has fallen into a design groove she’s comfortable with. True to her original mission of providing comfortable clothing to young urban women, Capital T delivers on freedom of movement. Each piece is neither too form-fitting or loose, letting the wearer take on the world in style.

Isabel Marant Pour H&M arrives on Indonesia The waiting is finally over. Isabel Marant Pour H&M has arrived on Indonesian shores, but as soon as store doors opened, the items just as quickly left after being snapped up by eager fans on the morning of November 14 at Gandaria City. These fashion enthusiasts, some of who had been camping in line since the previous night, were only given ten minutes to shop for the items they wanted, and they wasted no time in doing it. In a statement from an exclusive H&M interview, Marant said that “I design for everybody – women of any age, including young girls, their mothers and the young-at-heart grandmothers. Now, for the first time and with H&M, I’m also designing for my male friends, who have always begged me to do menswear. Usually my instinct tells me what will sell well. I cannot say how, but it always happens. I have the exact same feeling with this H&M collection.”

ne of the most anticipated shows of Day Five of Jakarta Fashion Week was the Cleo Fashion Awards (CFA). It has become a favourite show at JFW, leaving the fashion tent bursting at the seams with a keen audience. The CFAs have never failed to deliver fresh stocks of bright and talented local labels, with names like Klé, Geulis, Danjyo Hiyoji and Hunting Fields having gone through the same baptism. Being part of the CFA has catapulted many labels into the spotlight, but this year they only focused on two

arenas: Most Promising Accessories Brand and Most Innovative Local Label. We look at Innovation awards next edition. The show opened up with the newest collections from last year’s winners Fréj and Identité. This goes on to further underline the thesis that labels chosen by CFA are not just artistically rich ones, but also capable of surviving in the business. It shows their continuation and where they are after the CFA: are they still alive and kicking as a brand and evolving in style? These labels are not one hit wonders.

If last year’s collection used the pencil as motif, this time Fréj channeled their creative stroke with paint brushes in precise arrangements that stand up to their previous collection. While one of last year’s candidates, More and more, presented a more appealing collection fused acrylic materials with wood, stainless steel, titanium, they are nowhere to be seen today. Fréj, on the other hand, has gone from strength to strength following their inclusion among the CFA hall of winners. They can differentiate between creating something truly innovative while creating another collection that has value in the consumer market. Check out their more modest collections at The Goods Dept and you’ll see accessories that are more everyday-ready. That is how a brand can survive: by actually selling their creations!

Identité seems to be going strong with their sporty feminine DNA and majority black ensemble, which is a fairly safe universal pick. The brand has been receiving plenty of support for their minimalistic but edgy style, with their black-on-black numbers really starting to look like the backbone of their entire design philosophy.

For the Most Promising Accessories Brand, the finalists were whittled down to House of Jealouxy, Massicot, and Rosalyn Citta. The diversity of style in this year’s accessories finalists is pretty varied: Rosalyn Citta is very well-polished, Massicot fun and colourful, and House of Jealouxy turning up the theatrical and satirical tones. Titled “Write Me Letters”, the choice of words by House of Jealouxy to adorn this par avion-inspired collection gave us the idea to be a bit more playful in our style. With a mix of acrylic, chains, and rope, the accessories were designed to take center stage in your ensemble. They look pretty overwhelming altogeher, are not actually as inyour-face when worn in moderation. They were basically designed to be conversation starters!

Those who want a more polished look will love the simplicity of Rosalyn Citta‘s Late Bloomers collection. Traditional heritage was at full display from the choice of material, which was a bronze-coloured metal in transposed into modern sleek designs and no coupling to create a smooth texture. This bridges the gap in the market for metal accessories, which is currently dominated by overly traditional designs that would do well when paired with power suits.

The last of the finalists and winner of the title, Massicot, brought a breathe of fresh air in the overly saturated resin accessories arena. Resins are tricky: it’s a great material to work with, but if you play it too safe or too bold, then it can get tacky very easily. Thankfully this did not happen in their case, with the playful take on nature-based colors as their source of inspiration to create an exotic colour palette of blues and browns. If you’ve seen their previous collections, you will be forgiven for thinking they were made of true gemstones and not resin! But what is magnificent is how they extended their resin accessories to footwear. Look at those colourful Cuban heels! It’ll be a big hit soon.

The restaurant was established by a bunch of friends who once lived in Los Angeles, and we got to meet one of them, Ms. Dolly Chia. The USC alum and Le Cordon Bleu-educated Ms. Chia is also the executive chef at Wilshire, and she was kind enough to talk to us when we visited her eatery on a fairly busy afternoon. She gave us some recommendations from the menu which (are all) are top notch. We began with the Foie Gras Sushi (168k), which is a great blend of East and West; foie gras aburi served on sushi rice, topped with caramelized onions. The foie gras gives a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to the familiar sushi and takes it up a notch.

FOOD We wanted to try another dish that looks like a unique LA-style blend of the Mexican favorite with bulgogi beef and kimchi salsa, the Korean Tacos (72k), but too bad it was already sold out at the time. So we opted for the Braised Beef Quesadilla (117k); braised flank steak served in tortilla with salsa, guacamole, cherry tomatoes, and arugula salad.

We also tried a nice cocktail called Blue Magic (89k); gin, vodka, light rum, triple sec, blue curaçao, melon liquor, orange juice, lime juice, lychee fruits. And there’s one very refreshing mocktail called Sheila Carnival (35k); pineapple juice, cranberry juice, orange juice, passion fruit, grenadine, which was topped with cotton candy for a festive touch.

Next up on our table was the Truffle Angel Hair Pasta (179k). Don’t be fooled by this plainlooking dish; it is divine! The perfectly al dente pasta is tossed in creamy truffle sauce, topped with freshly grated truffles. We thought we could hear a heavenly choir!

Wilshire also has a breakfast menu, which they served all throughout the day. The Crunchy French Toast with Oreo or Cornflakes (75k) are favorites, as well as the Smoked Salmon Egg Benedict (98k).

The Slow Cooked 55 Degree Beef (275k) is another winner in our book; 24-hour slowcooked wagyu short rib served with truffled mashed potato, grilled corn, and mushroom bordelaise. The meat is so tender and the sauce and the sides provided the ideal accompaniment.

Lunch specials are also available, perfect for your mid-day break. Try the Urban Rice (45k); steamed rice topped with fried egg, beef sausage, and chicken, or the Green Anchovies Fried Rice (55k); with crispy anchovies and local deep fried delights. And there’s also Spaghetti Aglio Olio With Shrimp (65k).

With an urban chic interior and fantastic dishes, Yes, they are already available in many places Wilshire is a noteworthy addition of eateries throughout Jakarta, but you must try the Cronuts for Jakarta’s discerning foodies. A good dish to share here is the Speciale Vegetable Pizza (85k); freshly baked crispy thin pizza with BBQ sauce, baked rustic vegetables, tossed arugula with balsamic dressing, fried egg, basil chifonade, with parmesan cheese on top, plus scented with extra virgin olive oil. No meat on a pizza? No problem! This is one tasty treat that is well recommended. If you prefer a local type of dish, the Special Nasi Bakar (65k) is a must-try; traditional grilled wrapped yellow rice with kemangi leaf, chopped homemade vegetarian meatloaf and egg drop. Served with vegetable pickles, emping crackers, and sambel goring tempe. Simply wonderful!

Hopetown also has some noteworthy tapaslike dishes. Try the Enoki Frito Misto (80k); deep fried enoki mushroom with basil and dried chili, served with honey mustard sauce, and the Mushroom Martabak (55k); pan fried egg curry mushroom wrapped in spring roll skin, and served with special sauce. The Hopetown Brownie a la Mode (45k) and Hopetown Chocolate Cake (45k) should satisfy your craving for sweets. Vegetarian food doesn’t need to be bland and boring, and Hopetown is a proof of that. NVIDIA, best known for its GPUs, has just announced its latest offering – a portable, handheld gaming console dubbed Project Shield. Running on NVIDIA’s just-announced Tegra 4 chip – the world’s fastest mobile processor – the new console promises up to 38 hours of gaming pleasure, superb audio performance, and a seamless experience on the Android OS. Resembling a console controller with a built-in HD screen, the new system features a micro SD slot, USB port, standard audio jack and HDMI output for a high-definition connection to any HD screen. Specifications aside, this ambitious console aims to redefine mobile gaming, promising a seamless experience with your computer and any games you might own from Steam’s vast games library as well as NVIDIA’s Tegrazone game store. NVIDIA has offered tantalizingly few details but expect the new console to deliver sometime later this year. $299.00

Microsoft Announces the Official Release Date for the Xbox One

After Sony announced its next-gen console will be available starting November 15, Microsoft unveiled that its Xbox One will release on November 22 – one week before the retail craze of black Friday and exactly eight years after the release of the Xbox 360. In addition to publicizing its release date, Microsoft blogged that the latest Xbox CPU will be increased to 1.75GHz – a 10 percent increase from its original specifications. Although Sony has yet to officially detail the PlayStation 4’s CPU speed, it’s rumored to be upwards of about 2.75GHz. The Xbox One will retail at $100 USD more than its counterpart, but will also come with a Kinect system as opposed to Sony’s camera being sold separately.

While the rubber nip is easy to replace, its brass metal body is solid, yet light, and coated with a comfortable rubber grip. Harman Kardon recently released a new pair of no-hassle stereo speakers designed to connect to and stream audio from just about anything. Called the Nova Stereo Streaming Sound System, the speakers feature sleek semi-translucent closures that contains a 2.5-inch driver and a 1.25-inch tweeter as well as a passive bass radiator, and Harman Kardon’s proprietary Digital Single Processing. In addition to both physical analog and optical inputs to connect to HDTV, Apple TV and the like, the speakers use Bluetooth to stream to laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones. The system is controllable via the Harman Kardon Remote app available for iProducts and Android phones. The $300 Nova system is currently available for purchase through the brand’s website.

Sony PlayStation Vita TV Connects Seamlessly to Home Entertainment

As we near the November release of its next-gen console, Sony takes to the web to unveil its latest creation – the Playstation Vita TV. This 60mm x 100mm gadget connects to your PlayStation 4 serving as a multimedia streaming console that plays Vita games, Sony’s Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited, Hulu, karaoke and so much more. With up to 1,300 games available at the time of its release, Sony further mentioned “a future system update” will allow users to use Vita TV in separate rooms of your home from which the PS4 console is located to stream PS4 and Vita games. Priced at about $100 USD, this piece of hardware includes ports for HDMI and Ethernet cables as well as an external memory card opening, a slot for Vita games, and a USB port.
