The New Normal Calls for New Routines From floods to volcanic ash, for the first part of 2014 Jakarta and many parts of Indonesia took quite the beating from Mother Nature. It is however getting better now, and particularly in Jakarta, the good news is that images of inflatable boats afloat on Jakarta streets are no more. So everything is all back to normal, right? Don’t get too excited just yet, after the water receded, it left quite a lasting impression on the city’s streets. Humongous potholes are everywhere, causing traffic congestion at every turn. Throw in the increasing number of cars on the roads, the longer than usual commute is officially the new normal. I hate to admit it but I think it’s about time we embrace the fact that a part of living in Jakarta involves “living” in our cars. The best way to deal with this new normal is that we insert new routines. For one, I’ve embraced the macet by listening to a number of self-help audiobooks, one message from The Power of Change written by Charles Duhigg says: “did you know that willpower can be trained like a muscle?” I’ve always had a list of books that I’ve wanted to read, and “thanks” to the macet, I can finally have time to do so in the form of its audiobooks. In taxis, I find myself striking up a conversation with the driver, to hear out his many amusing experiences with Jakartans. I’m most curious about stories involving postclub customers, as every story always turns out to be funny, shocking, and entertaining all tat the same time. I’ve also found that these conversations would make the driver more relaxed, which makes them better and safer drivers. By the end of the day, I’d have more interesting topics to talk about with my friends rather than simply grumbling to them about the traffic that is here to stay. Meanwhile check inside for more interesting things for you to talk to your friends about. Stuff like Armin van Buuren on the way soon, or fashion statements to blow your friends’ minds. It’s all there inside with the Time Line of major events coming our way this month. There is a heap on the way too. Peace out! Remember to check beatmag.com for the latest what’s on information.

Armin Van Buuren Armin van Buuren will be in Jakarta this month bringing for the first time the world famous A State of Trance show (ASOT 650th) with some of the best trance DJs from around the globe for what promises to be one of the biggest shows yet in the Ancol’s Eco-Park. 24

FEATURE
Armin Van Buuren Armin has been at the top of his game for many years and big arena-driven dance music is his game. He is a man driven by an unbridled and relentless passion for music. A born perfectionist, striving to stay on top of the scene he’s helped to grow over the past almost two decades. The flag-bearer of the trance movement, one of the biggest dance scenes worldwide, he remains a down-
to-earth guy, living the extraordinary life of one of the world’s most popular DJs. Armin van Buuren is always on the move, whether through the music he creates in his studio, or bound to the next high-end club or festival somewhere around the globe. And that’s where we get the chance to catch up with him in the middle of March 2014 - right here in Ancol, Jakarta. www.beatmag.com

FEATURE Armin, “It’s not just love for music, it’s my passion. It goes beyond liking, and beyond a hobby, it’s about a way of living. Music is essential to my life.” For more than 15 years, the Grammy nominated Dutchman has been living the dream and international success. His five-time number one position in the critically acclaimed DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll has been the result of his loyalty to fans, his creativity in the studio, the perseverance with which he hosts his weekly radio show A State of Trance and the energy he transcends to the crowds in front of him when playing. Despite the heavy pressure that comes along with being one of the world’s most popular DJ, Armin has always kept his focus on the music. And that’s exactly what keeps him going. Besides being a very active DJ, creative producer, and all round nice guy, Van Buuren also manages to find the time to produce a weekly radio show. That weekly show and podcast is listened to by more than 20 million listeners, which is really an incredible number of people to be tuned in. In June 2001, Armin van Buuren aired the first episode of A State of Trance. Now, 13 years later, he still hosts the weekly two hour show, in which he presents the biggest tunes of the moment, as well as providing an interactive way for fans to discover new music. Regular features of the show are the “Tune of The Week”, “A State of Trance Radio Classic” and the “Future Favourite”, of which the latter is based on an online voting poll. Just like every year, Armin is celebrating another milestone with the show and doing an extensive world tour right now, based around the 650th episode

of the radio show. The ‘New Horizons’ world tour lands in the cities of Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Almaty, Utrecht, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Miami (in that order). The 8 week tour, that is taking place in January, February and March 2014, includes nine shows in countries all around the globe, with events broadcast live on the A State of Trance website. While Armin has played here before, this will be the first time the show has been held in Jakarta. Reflecting upon the A State of Trance world tours, Armin says, “I’m deeply honoured by all the positive things that are happening for the show and for the sound in general. I’ve always said ASOT is not only a show for but also a show by the fans. The show wouldn’t be where it is without the fans, so it feels amazing to see so many people celebrating along with it. It’s crazy to see groups of fans going crazy to the same music that we’re playing on the other side of the world. People wearing banners, flags, and making their own private party. This is what I meant with ‘turning the world into a dance floor’. And I am so looking forward to being in Jakarta this year for the first time to celebrate the show and our music together.” Needless to say Van Buuren has a lot of fans in Jakarta, around the country and the region so we can expect another massive show at Eco-Park this March and with many of the top producing DJs like Paul van Dyke, Alex M.O.R.P.H, John Callaghan and Andrew Rayel joining the party, hold onto your hats folks this is gonna be huge. Just like the terminator once promised, a certain Leonardo has returned and this time he’s been built for speed! Yes, you read correctly, the Jakartan singer/songwriter has released a new album, Built to Race. Leonardo, who used to go solo troubadour-style, has expanded into an institution of seven and named his new group Leonardo and His Impeccable Six. Once upon a time, circa 2010’s The Sun album Leonardo was more of an adult contemporary, Jeff Buckley-esque, Tom Waits-ish composition kind of guy. This latest record sees him evolve into a zootsuit era swing/jazz/rockabilly persona.
Produced by Buttonijo, Leonardo invited a collective of talented artists from within the alternative scene, inclusive of Bonita, Tika of Tika and The Dissidents, Charita Utamy of The Trees and The Wild and Bhismo of Kunokini. Recorded in Studio Tokove by Risto Rangga and mix-mastered by Andre Harihandoyo, the album which was previously released online only, will be published in CD format soon this year.
For the record, Leonardo and His Impeccable Six are Leonardo Ringo (vocal, guitar), Christo Putra (drums), Susan Agiwitanto (bass), Dharmo Soedirman (piano/Hammond), Daniel Sukoco (baritone sax), Andreas Pardede Consisting of 10 songs, the album title is (trumpet), and Wahyu Maliki (trombone). picked from the first track, which is also the first single. “Built to Race” represents Get your free taste of Leonardo and their group’s collective obsession with His Impeccable Six by clicking over to motorcycles—chosen as their first buttonijo.com to download their cover song single for its dynamic groove—reflects compilation, Mirrors. Vintage Vespa
Professional photographer Yudi Pratomo has been intrigued by Vespas ever since he was in ninth grade. Today his collection spans over 20 Vespas, of which he often trades with other collectors. His first ever Vespa, one made in 1965, however, is still in his possession. t was in 1946 when Italian Erico Piaggio first created the Vespa. The word Vespa comes from Latin, which means bee, and is basically what a Vespa looks like from above. The Vespa has been used during wars to transport cargo, and now it’s purely used for lifestyle purposes. “This is a limited edition Vespa ‘Congo’, which was given by then President Soekarno as a gift to the Indonesian military forces that served as peacekeepers in the Republic of Congo,” explains Yudi about the many
FEATURE all five Jakarta chapters convene and do various activities together. The activities include touring, community service, and even disaster relief, with the latest being helping Jakarta flash-flood victims. Although it might seem that the Vespa community, or any motorcycle community for that matter, might have a tendency to be arrogant and have complete disregard of the law while on the streets, Yudi explains that there are safety procedures that each SOG member must follow- and they take it quite seriously. “The last thing we want is for one of our brothers to get injured during our fun rides.” For wouldbe members that want to join without obeying these safety requirements and procedures - as simple as using optimal tires, to having a track record of at least 2,000 kilometres of riding experience - SOG simply shows them the door. stories behind his collection. “I like Vespas because of their exotic and timeless look. And although new models are available, still the classic ones are in demand.” Mostly, the demand comes from members of the Scooter Owner Group (SOG), a 2,500 strong Vespa club with chapters in almost every major city in Indonesia, even spilling over to Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore. SOG was first established in Jakarta in 2001. “I’ve been a member of SOG South Jakarta since 2008,” says Yudi. “Prior to SOG, I was already a member of a small Vespa club in North Jakarta since 1997.” SOG South Jakarta members would have their own activities, but every three months
The bond between the SOG communities members is strong, which has proven to be useful for Yudi’s profession. “As a photographer I do a lot of travelling around the country, and it always surprises me how welcoming SOG members are,” says Yudi. “People I just met would offer me to stay in their house, and lend me their Vespas to explore the area.” SOG members trade spare scooter parts, open businesses together, and share other things beyond the motorbike. Aside from the fun rides together, there is something more profound that bond the members of SOG. “As any member would tell you, we love hunting for old Vespas,” says Yudi. “I once found a Vespa in North Jakarta and half of it was covered in dirt. Nonetheless, I saw it had potential to shine and people there thought I was crazy to dig up the beat up Vespa.” www.beatmag.com

Flooding, volcanic eruptions … what’s next?
eavy rain causes flooding in Jakarta and elsewhere in Java, a volcano erupts in North Sumatra, followed by another in East Java … and we’ve only just emerged from the second month of 2014.
A similar pattern emerged at Mount Sinabung, North Sumatra, where evacuees living close to the volcano started to return to their homes in late January, thinking the worst of the eruption was over, only to be confronted by the most severe outpourings of hot gases, rock and ash. The volcanic eruption of Mount Kelud, East Java, in mid-February sent a huge cloud of ash into the air, which was subsequently blown over large parts of East and Central Java, Yogyakarta and even parts of West Java, covering the areas affected in a blanket of ash.
The pattern of the flooding this year caused misery for many because a dry spell after the initial inundation prompted some to return to their homes to clean them up, only to find muddy floodwaters rising again.
Around 75,000 people were evacuated and, at one point, all the civil airports in Java were closed, apart from the two that serve Jakarta. The business and leisure travel plans of thousands of people over the mid-

Things might just be getting a little better, however. Although the areas near the two volcanoes remain on alert status, some of the people living there have been able to start rebuilding their lives. The airports in Java eventually reopened, while a relatively dry spell in the second half of February has enabled flood victims to return to their homes and start to make them habitable again.
with big names like Jamie Cullum and Natalie Cole topping the bill. Later next month, gigs by Avril Lavigne and Bruno Mars are just two of a string of concerts by big-name artists scheduled to excite their fans in the capital city. April sees the start of the so-called “festival of democracy” that marks the legislative election, to be followed by the presidential one in July. Travelling around the city you’d be hard-pressed to tell from the street scene that an election was just around the corner, but the usual razzmatazz will likely become more obvious as the election draws closer.
The beginning of March sees what is Let’s hope we’ve got the bad news out of arguably the capital’s largest music the way early this year, which should mean festival – Java Jazz – return to Kemayoran, that things can only get better. (Jim Read) www.beatmag.com

he free spirit jazz music that originally came from the African American culture in relatively modern times has mesmerized not only the world but also classical music composers. Names like Johannes Brahms, Darius Milhaud, Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel ventured to Harlem and their lives changed after listening to some ragtime sessions in the late 19th Century.

There are actually some outstanding classical works that were inspired by the irresistibly new sound called jazz. Milhaud’s ballet composition, “The Creation of the World” (1923) for instance, is considered to be the first full-length composition to incorporate jazz and classical music. Of course, most classical music lovers must also be aware of George Gershwin’s jazzy
CLASSICAL “Rhapsody in Blue” (1924) that has the free spirit style of solo piano. Back then, this composition was advertised in a program entitled “An Experiment in Modern Music” during the premiere. This was an unprecedented musical foray written for solo piano and orchestra or band and commissioned by the respected Paul Whiteman Orchestra. The composition marked Gershwin as a serious composer and propelled jazz onto the “legitimate” concert stage. Who can forget his famous and only jazz opera in classical music literature called Porgy and Bess with its famous aria: “Summertime”. Its a real classic! “America’s classical music” (jazz as first referred to by pianist and educator Dr. Billy Taylor) has made its way across the Atlantic to inspire 21st century composers such as Wladyslaw Szpilman (the Polish pianist that survived Nazism and is pictured on the Oscar winning movie The Pianist by Roman Polanski), Steve Reich, Chick Corea and David Benoit. Jazz musicians of today and yesteryear have been attracted to works by and have drawn upon the inventive usage of harmonies employed by classical
composers, including Debussy, Ravel, Delius, Stravinsky, and many others. Chick Corea for example has celebrated the works of classical composers by recording and performing concerts by Mozart and the piano music of Béla Bartók and Ravel. In the same vein, David Benoit has committed himself to an ongoing investigation into the classical music world as he has conducted, performed, and recorded his classically-influenced works and standard concert repertoire with major orchestras in the US and abroad. With an attempt to highlight this great hybrid of classical music in jazz, Jakarta Conservatory of Music, also known as JCoM, is planning a concert called JCoM Goes Jazzy presenting their selected students to perform some jazz classical music tunes from great composers such as Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Claude Debussy, Morton Gould and Christopher Norton. Under artistic direction by one of our most accomplished senior pianists, Adelaide Simbolon, this concert will bring out all the fun in this style of music. Make sure you don’t miss this rare ragtime session.

Technically, thirteen years have gone by since 2001’s solo One Nil, but that’s not to say the native Aucklander hasn’t kept himself busy on a clutch of projects with brother Tim (2004’s Everyone is Here), soundtracking Middle Earth for his buddy Peter Jackson (The Hobbit OST) and his ambitiously international 7 Worlds Collide collective, which drew together such esteemed and diverse musicians as Jeff Tweedy, Eddie Vedder and Johnny Marr. Dizzy Heights finds Finn the younger back on his own, and unfortunately at times it feels as if the songwriter’s touch has deserted him. The woozy guitar and dreamy vocals of “Impressions” and sunshiny pop of the title track open proceedings promisingly enough, but all too quickly we stumble into a few too many misfires that take the sheen off what is otherwise a solid effort. The lowest point comes in the form of “Divebomber”, which throws theatrical falsetto over the top of baroque strings, military drums and the sound of planes falling out the sky. Luckily, the rest of Dizzy Heights is just good enough to negate these hiccups, and the overall impression is one of more good than bad. “Better Than TV” is a groovy mantra with a Middle Eastern rhythm, and “Pony Ride” recalls the indie rock of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. At these moments, the richly textured songwriting bubbles to the surface again, reminding us that. For a writer at this stage of his career, he displays a confident, almost fearless attitude, and for that he should be commended. Dan Ashcroft
Swords, sandals, and a winter’s tale
by: pande
This movie round up has the ancient Greeks once again fighting Xerxes and the Persian army in this follow up to the Battle of Thermopylae. We also check out the adaptation of a Winter’s Tale which tries to live up to the bestselling novel. Lastly, we briefly check out ancient Pompeii and if you know your history, you know it’ll be a disaster... Check out www.21cineplex.com for the schedules or get the DVDs which will keep piling up in a drawer next to your TV.
300 rise of an empire Action, Drama, Fantasy, War. Director: Noam Murro. Writer: Zack Snyder (screenplay), Kurt Johnstad (screenplay), Frank Miller (graphic novel “Xerxes”). Cast: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, Rodrigo Santoro. In this follow-up of the 2007 blockbuster 300, Greek general Themistokles plans to bring together the whole of Greece and retaliate after the death of the king of Sparta. Only this time, the battlefield will be the ocean, where the Persian Emperor Xerxes and his new ally, Artemisia (Eva Green) – a Greek-born and Persian-trained naval commander are all ready to invade Greece once again. Based on Frank Miller’s latest unpublished graphic novel and assisted with incredible visual effects from the previous 300 crew. Sure, Zach Snyder isn’t directing this one, but we have high hopes.
winter’s tale Drama, Fantasy, Mystery. Director: Akiva Goldsman. Writer: Akiva Goldsman (screenplay), Mark Helprin (novel “Winter’s Tale”). Cast: Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint, Russell Crowe. Set in 1916 and today’s Manhattan, this century-spanning love tale features many magically romantic ingredients. It centers on Peter Lake, a burglar in New York, who by chance, or rather by destiny, breaks into a house owned by Beverly Penn, a terminally-ill red-haired girl who he falls in love with and is destined to die in his arms. Adding to his troubles is a demonic Irish gangster who insanely chases after Peter with his henchmen. But, lucky for Peter, his love won’t simply end that abruptly. Expect love to be in the air in this film by Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind).
pompeii Action, Adventure, Disaster, Drama. Director: Paul W. S. Anderson. Writer: Janet Scott Batchler (screenplay), Lee Batchler (screenplay), Michael Robert Johnson (screenplay). Cast: Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Carrie-Anne Moss, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jessica Lucas, Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland.
Here, Kit Harrington, you know, Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, plays a slave-turnedgladiator by the name of Milo. The thing is, with no disaster early warning system in Pompeii in the year of 79AD and the volcano Mount Vesuvius about to erupt, Milo has a very tiny amount of time to waste to rescue his true love, Cassia (Emily Browning) from the devastating pyroclastic surges coming right at the magnificent Pompeii. So it’s basically a swords and sandals film fused together with a disaster movie crudely mated with history... sounds interesting.

Indonesian Fashion Forward Goes to Paris Fashion Week
Five Indonesian fashion designers incorporated in the Indonesia Fashion Forward program are showcasing their masterpiece collections at the Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2014 scheduled to take place from February 28 to March 3. The five chosen are Major Minor, Tex Saverio, Toton, Vinora, and Yosafat Dwi Kurniawan. In the Indonesia Fashion Forward Press Release, the designers stated their conviction that Indonesian designers are able to compete with those from other countries on international runways. Among the five designers, Tex Saverio was even granted the opportunity to stage a fashion show. “We initially submitted all of the designers of the Fashion Forward Program, which were about 20 names. However, only 5 passed the selection process. Tex Saverio then passed to stage his own fashion show there, said Diaz, the director from Jakarta Fashion Week.

serious about skin care. Metal particles, carbon monoxide, and dust are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to external aggressors that our skin deal with on a daily basis. Here are some simple steps you can take to help slow down the aggressive effects of urban pollutants on your skin: Sun protection. Well, duh. We’re never going to stop yapping about the importance of sunscreen because UVA and UVB rays are, especially if you live in areas where the ozone layers is more depleted. Even if you’re staying indoors, there’s nothing wrong with slapping on some SPF 10-15 for good measure. Step up with the antioxidants. Vitamin E and C are just two of the antioxidants that can help neutralize oxidative effects of free radicals on skin cells, so start drinking green tea (high in polyphenols, another form of antioxidant) and eating vitamin-rich foods (like tomatoes, carrots, and leafy greens). Drink plenty of water. This is also a no-brainer. Skin cells need water to retain its youthful glow, so drink up! Thorough cleansing. If you’ve been exposed to particularly high levels of pollution, don’t count on using a single facial wash or foam to get your skin squeaky clean. Always double cleanse, and try using a Clarisonic too for even deeper cleaning.

Apart from the breakup of pop music’s greatest power couple, this matching denim over denim look is probably the worst thing to have ever happened to the Justin & Britney unit. If you have the sass to pull it off, then go for it! The wet weather has made this a preferred fabric of many people in the office too, because of its sheer hardiness. Keep on Moving with DKNY Jeans Spring ‘14 When DKNY Jeans opened at Pacific Place back in 2010, we were excited by the thought of getting our hands on a couple of staples that screamed “New York, New York.” Fashion out of the Big Apple is always associated with calculated indifference: an oversized designer sweater over tailored cigarette pants, a thrifted men’s blazer over a vintage bohemian dress, or a wide-brimmed sun hat with a leather jacket. This trademark New York nonchalance is evident in DKNY Jeans’ Spring 2014 collection, which has attempted to expand on the style philosophy of individuals who roam the urban landscape. More than that, the Urban Nomads collection highlights and caters to the mobility of the perpetual motion machine that are young city-dwellers.
The aesthetic sensibilities of the skate punk scene are combined with breathable materials like nylon and mesh. The looks are sporty and casual, but you can still find select pieces that would look great when paired with your most worn-in hitops to outdoor music concerts. Mesh dresses, tape-knit sweaters, and mesh dresses make up part of a lightweight collection for ease of movement, while moto silhouettes are combined with a touch of surf punk. If you’re liking the looks here, be sure to pick them out in your size at the DKNY Jeans store in Jakarta’s Plaza Indonesia or Pacific Place, or Club21 if you live outside of Jakarta.

Go!Curry started in 2010 with an outlet at Cilandak Town Square (Citos). The people behind this local brand also own Kopi Kitchen and Spice Rack, both at Kemang Village. Recently we visited Go!Curry's second outlet, at Pacific Place mall. From the look of the busy lunchtime crowd, business is good.
On to the food. First, choose your type of flavorsome curry. Now, these are not Indian curries per se, but some modified versions to suit more palates. There are five kinds; there’s the Japanese-influenced Brown Curry, with hints of apple and cardamom, the Green Curry, with coconut milk, green chili, lime, mint, and pandan leaves, the Red Curry, with red habanero chili, basil, cinnamon, in a tomato based sauce, the Yellow Curry, a creamy, more subtle butter-based curry with a hint of fresh tomato and cashews, and the more traditionaltasting Rogan Josh Curry, a Kashmiri classic with a reddish color and a ‘passionate’ flavor.
The mid-sized restaurant looks pretty simple; elements of light-colored wood balance the exposed walls nicely. A splash of color is provided by the large, fun depiction of the ‘invasion’ of curry from the Eastern world to Second, go for one of the five levels of spiciness; the West. The place mats are also cute, with mild, medium, hot, very hot, or (if you dare) cartoon characters from the world of curry. insanely hot!

Then, choose your carbs; Long Grain Rice, Cilantro Rice, or Aromatic Yellow Rice. And if you like, with a little extra (+7k) you can substitute the rice with Naan Bread (plain, garlic, or butter). Last but not least, choose a topping; from Mixed Vegetables (50k), Tandoor Chicken Tikka (62k), Chicken Katsu (62k), Breaded Prawns (70k), New Zealand Mussels (70k), Lamb Cubes With Herbs (85k), all the way to Australian Oxtail (120k).
A chilled, yoghurt-based drink called lassi is a perfect companion for the spicy curry. At 30k each, choose from Salty, Sweet Plain, Strawberry, Cranberry Mint, or our favorite Mango Cardamom Lassi. For a more zesty concoction, try the refreshing Cranberry Pineapple Splash, Pineapple Lime Mojito, or Grapefruit Fizz (27k, respectively).

Retailing for about $350 USD, the AW120 is out now. www.nikon.com
More concerned with delivering superior sound with simple aesthetics, Nude Audio doesn’t spend a great deal of its budget on frivolous advertising. Thanks to the blogosphere however, we’re still able to bring word of its latest creation, the Studio 5 Speaker. Following the successful launch of its line of travel speakers, the San Francisco-based brand designed a powerful 2.1 sound system with a 3-inch subwoofer and two neodymium drivers. While the asymmetric housing is built with a matte plastic body and brushed aluminum details, the Studio 5 features a lightning dock for the iPhone 5 as well as dual Bluetooth connectivity. Nude Audio’s first foray into home entertainment is currently available at Grand St. for $179 USD. www.nudeaudio.com
Take To The Skies (And Roads) With The Helicycle We’re not quite at the era of flying cars like The Jetson’s, but the Helicycle does place us one step closer to that scenario. And since it’s designed to fly below 4,000 feet, you don’t have to worry about getting run down by an airplane. The craft can reach a max of 112 mph in the air and on the road thanks to its 230-hp, four-cylinder engine. despite looking like a helicopter, it doesn’t work like one. Instead, its non-powered overhead rotor spins as a result of the forward motion of the vehicle to provide lift. For takeoffs, you only need 540 feet of runway and 100 feet for landings. It’ll take you on a 220-mile flight on its 27-gallon gas tank or 750 miles on the road. Made from carbon fiber, titanium and aluminum and training is included in its $395,000 price tag, but you’ll also need to get your sports pilot certificate. www.hammacher.com
