I recall racing around the city a few years ago in a girlfriend’s car listening to vocal trance tracks at full volume and at full speed heading to the wildest clubs in town. Them were the days. Dash Berlin, Armin van Buuren, all of them were cranking out at maximum decibels. It was the first time I had been tuned into this style of music and after a little while became addicted to that and of course the girl. Talk about fun personified. That’s now turned into sweet memories but the tunes still live on. One of the singers on many of those tracks was a young Aussie girl by the name of Emma Hewitt. She has made a big name for herself in the last few years in dance music and we were fortunate enough to catch up with her before she got here to play Colosseum this month. That interview’s inside. Speaking of which Colosseum has a huge line up of DJs and singers coming over the next weeks. Take a look on the Timeline pages to see for yourself. We have a great line-up for the next Beat Room at Fez Dungeon on April 23. One of the acts touches on a by-gone era of yesterday and are as smooth as silk. We speak with Leonardo from His Impeccable Six about how it is being a rocker nowadays in Jakarta and what brought him to be where he is now. Make sure you catch his band, That’s Rockefeller and Sigmun at Fez Dungeon later this month. We will also be holding a beach party of sorts at X2 in early May. More info on that soon. It’s getting exciting as we head into the summer months and there are loads of things going on around us. Just like in that racing car from a few years ago sometimes you just have to hold on for the ride to see where it takes you. Hopefully that’s to a good place. Peace out, enjoy April, friends.

E

EMMA Hewitt

mma Hewitt first landed on the electonic music dance scene in 2007 when her vocals were used on the Chris Lake’s #1 track at the time “Carry Me Away”. After that single, she worked with artists such as Dash Berlin, Armin van Buuren, Cosmic Gate, Gareth Emery, and BT. With hits behind her like “Till The Sky Falls Down”, “Waiting”, and “Disarm Yourself”, she’s on the top of her game, touring the world and living the life. She’s now back in Asia and the Pacific – singing her hits for the adoring crowd. Here we have the exclusive interview with the Australian singer/songwriter now living in L.A. before her big show at Colosseum on April 10. Hey Emma, how’s life these days? How is a regular day in the life of Emma Hewitt? Hey! Life is good thanks! I am working on new music quite a lot at the moment, so I have taken some time out from traveling and touring so much to focus on the writing process again. This is a lovely change for me for a little while,

30

www.beatmag.com

being in the one place a little more often. I am living out in LA now, so it is a lovely, sunny inspirational environment to be in. I usually go hiking or something during the day and then get into the song work in the afternoon/evening. I am more of a night person, I find this is when I am feeling most creative!

FEATURE Can you recall any of your early nightlife memories? How much has it changed since then? I remember the early rave days of Gatecrasher parties and dingy clubs. It was a lot of fun in those days, the parties used to go well into the next day most of the time. I think the vibe is still there, however the industry has become more of a big business and perhaps a bit more commercialized, a lot more effort is put in to the locations and lineups of the parties and in trying to create an overall experience for the people. The spirit of the people partying and getting into the music hasn’t changed so much though I don’t think, people still like to have fun and that always remains the focus. You were originally into rock bands right? Was there an earth shattering moment when you switched from rock to dance or it happened slowly? The main catalyst was releasing a song called “Carry Me Away” with UK producer Chris Lake, and having this song kind of created a momentum I wasn’t expecting. The switch still happened kind of slowly from there though. The rock band was still my main gig, and I thought dance music was a lovely thing I could occasionally dip my toes into and explore more. Not long after the Chris Lake track I had writing requests from Cosmic Gate and Dash Berlin. When both of the songs to come from these collaborations were received well I realized that this style of music was where I was meant to be and the transition was very effortless. What artists were you listening to back then? Were you influenced by any in particular? I have always been influenced by artists who convey strong emotion and feeling in their work. I was (and am still!) heavily influenced by Eddie Vedder. He lives his songs and you can feel that so strongly when you listen to him sing. Tori Amos was a big influence early on. Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Tegan and Sara have always been great, early Sneaker Pimps and Portishead were my first electronic music influences along with Massive Attack. There was a lot of great music around when albums were still the main focus. There

still is now, but the beautiful tracks that weren’t singles that would become your favourite tend to be a little harder to find these days. You’ve recently released a track in collaboration with Cosmic Gate called “Going Home”. Is there a deeper meaning behind this one? What are your thoughts on how it turned out? This song has a lot of meaning behind it. I hope people will take from it whatever they want to get out of it. I believe songs change their meaning depending on the needs and perspective of the listener. Songs can morph in a sense to become relevant to that particular person’s situation, so in saying that I do not like to spell out too much what my personal meaning behind the song is… But really this song is very much about everyone following the path they are meant to be on, finding the truth in their life and finding those places and kindred spirits that feel like home. Do you enjoy playing at festivals or clubs more? Any main differences that you prefer or don’t prefer? They are obviously polar opposites, but I honestly can’t pick a favourite. The festival shows are an incredible buzz, you can’t beat that feeling of walking onstage and performing to a huge crowd! But also the club shows can be really special, it can be a lot more personal and you get to meet the people partying and have more of a hang out and community vibe, so both environments are equally as special and important to me. Congratulations on your recent milestone of one million followers on Facebook. What are your thoughts on social media and its ability to help artists and musicians like yourself to showcase themselves? Thank you! It’s no secret that social media is extremely important these days for artists, especially independent artists. It really is my primary form of promotion, and most importantly, for connecting directly with the people who listen to the music I make. www.beatmag.com

FEATURE

EMMA Hewitt It is wonderful to be able to have instant access to the people listening to your music and to be able to have personal interaction and receive their feedback, and to post images or footage and have people feel instantly connected. Platforms like Youtube allow people in countries we would have been unable to traditionally reach or release albums in to hear our music, and that also then opens up the possibility of touring to these countries and developing relationships with the music communities there. Social media has really brought back a “grass roots” feel to the music industry; I don’t need 100 people at a record company deciding what we are going to put out there and when, I can connect directly with the people who really matter - the people listening to the music and coming to the clubs. If you were stuck on an island with three tracks on your iPod, what would those three tracks be? Well, that changes by the minute, but right at this moment (and because it is a Sunday here!), I would have to say Eddie Vedder’s ‘Society’ (“Hope you’re not lonely without me…”), the acoustic version of Above & Beyond’s ‘Sun & Moon’ (Alex Vargas kills me on that track!) and of course, the classic ‘Silence’ (Tiesto’s In Search of Sunrise Remix). What’s your favorite Emma Hewitt track so far and why? It is difficult for me to name a favourite actually, all of the songs have a special place when they are being written and you are living those moments. As I move on in my life the newer songs are more personal to me because they are coming from a place where I am at now. So in that sense, “Going Home” is possibly my favourite right now. That will also change as the next lot of songs come through too. You’ve been to Indonesia a few times now, any particular moments that stand out while you’ve been here? I have met a lot of awesome people out there and had some brilliant times! Being a guest at

32

www.beatmag.com

the World Badminton Championship in Jakarta was a wonderful experience. I always love the food and the shopping out there too. Spending time in Bali is wonderful, and I am so glad I get to visit for a few days again on this trip! I am very much looking forward to seeing many of the cities and people again I saw last time I was in Indonesia, the Indonesian people are amongst the friendliest I have met anywhere in the world. What is the future looking like for you? Any big plans we should be looking out for? I have quite a few new songs set for release this year, I am very excited, it has been a long time coming. The animated video for ‘Going Home’ will be released the first week of April, I am so excited for this, the video is unlike anything I have ever been involved with before and the animators have done an extraordinary job bringing the characters to life! The Gareth Emery mix of this song is also out the end of March. My next single will then follow at the end of June… but that one is a surprise. Thanks for your time Emma, what can we expect at your show at Colosseum, Jakarta on April 10? Terimah Kasih! Thank you for talking to me!! I will premier some brand new music in Jakarta, and I will also be performing a few other mash ups and surprises. We will have a few special merchandise giveaways and I will be meeting people for photos and chats too. I can’t wait to see everyone there!

FEATURE

Leonardo had a dream and that was swing... Tell me about the band, how long have you been together and who’s in it? We started in 2010. Back then I was doing my solo album, and I’m always amazed by old jazz, ragtime, and that stuff. But here, finding brass players is quite hard and expensive. So that year, I got my chance meeting these boys. So I kinda “secured” them, and switched my path into a band format. The personnel are: Christo Putra (drums), Susan Agiwitanto (bass), Dharmo Soedirman (piano and organ), Andreas Pardede (trumpets), Daniel Sukoco (baritone sax), and Wahyu Maliki (trombone).

34

www.beatmag.com

How old are you? Age? Haha I’m 37. So when did you first start playing music? Well, i had a band in high school. Does that count? Sure Does. And what style of music did you like back then? Back then, that was in the 90s, it was grindcore haha. I played the drums. So when did you move from heavy grindcore to this jazzy swing stuff? And why?

Well, the grindcore era ended not long after it started. And I also listen to various kinds of music. From Napalm Death to Sinatra. But I always fancied the old jazz. I never had the chance to make that kinda band. That year, 2010, was THE year for me. I mean like, man, it was my childhood dream to be able to have a band like this. The opportunity walked in and I guess that was that. Ok so Frank Sinatra was an influence, who else gets under your skin? Well, names like Louis Prima, Ray Charles, Tom Waits, Count Basie, and many others. I also dig punk bands, like The Buzzcocks, Television and David Bowie I guess. Not to mention those musicians from Motown and Stax Records: Rufus Thomas, Marvin, Otis Redding, too many really. There is quite a schism between grindcore and what you play now. What did your friends say at the time? Well, as I mentioned before. The grindcore era didn’t last that long. It was during my youth. I’ve only got the T-shirts now haha. It was a good feeling though starting my musical experience from one of the fastest (as in speed) musical genres. Oh yeah! There are a few rockabilly bands around. Would you consider what you do similar to rockabilly? When I was a kid, I watched those classic Disney cartoons. And those movies, they all have big-bands, swing bands for their score. Well, rockabilly... I don’t consider my band as a rockabilly band. Its a part of my music. I’m comfortable with swing. Well rockabilly basically is the grandson. I prefer the granddad. Ha. Are there other bands doing a similar style as you guys in Indonesia? We have many rockabilly, psychobilly bands. But I dont know about swing thoough. I hope there are, so we can build something out of it. Have you toured much, what was your favorite gig over the past year? We don’t tour much haha. Favorite gig, Rocking The Region Singapore. And the previous Jakarta one, Rockabilly 4th Anniversary. How about recording? Yeah of course, we launched a double album early this year. The first one titled Mirrors, its a free download album. The second one is Built to Race.

And how were they greeted by the public and critics? Well, Mirrors got 20,000 downloads in one month. Then again, its free. Built to Race was named as one of the best albums by Rolling Stone Magazine Indonesia. But we havent sold that many for Built to Race. We should probably make it a free download again? Haha. Speaking of which, the whole music business is changing so rapidly, (everybody wanting everything free) how does the band keep afloat? In here? Do something else other than this. Lol. Like a proper job. Well, if you’re not ready to sell your soul to the devil, I really do strongly recommend to find a steady job, then play your stuff, or release something. It’s still a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll. Haha. We’re rocking But im not sure we’re rollin, haha. But the truth is, with this situation, we’re surviving. We have less tolerance towards the audience. Because we’re not bound to them. What do you mean? Well, nowadays, they have “charts” too in independent music scenes. Because we’re not trying to make money from the band. So we can feel more “freedom” in making music. Like we don’t care whether it’s gonna be a seller or not. We just release albums we want. How about the Jakarta live music scene, are there many opportunities for bands to play? There are some favorites for the event organizers. Bands who can sell tickets sky rocket. Well, being a less-fan-based band, we’re making our own way out by making smaller, more intimate gigs. I saw you at a bar in Menteng a few months ago and I was impressed. It was good fun and entertaining. That’s important right. To entertain. Sure, its everything, man. The connection between the band and the audience has gotta be strong. Underground or Commercial EDM: A Place or a Journey By DJ Nate Sartain

36

www.beatmag.com

FEATURE

Often

louder than the m u s i c itself, we hear the echoes and rumbles of an endless argument about commercial dance music, versus its underground counterpart. Although it may appear a battle exists, do yourself a favor and avoid taking part. Instead, see the good in both, and find your own place. First, come to define your own thoughts of what is commercial, what is underground. Then, agree that we’ll probably all have our own definitions, differences. Think back to the 80s and 90s when your favorite bands/artists released a new CD. There were always a couple radio songs. Tracks meant to reach a broad audience, which would then create more exposure and push album sales, even luring in new fans. What about the other songs on the album that would never be heard on the radio? Were those tracks more personal to the artist, more creative, more unique? More…underground? They reached a different, lesser audience? Usually the more devoted fans that bought the album, and gave support. Many are attracted to commercial dance music. It’s now easily accessible, and can be heard on the far reaches of almost every country. But an entirely different world of electronic music hides somewhere else. Below the charts and mainstream radio stations. Outside of big labels like Ultra, or Armada. Beyond the CDJs and USB sticks of Hardwell and Dash Berlin. To some, it’s called “the underground” because endless rabbit holes of sound, inspiration, and new ideas await. It’s a different way of doing things. With DJs and producers we’ve never heard of. Only because, we’ve yet to look. There’s always going to be music snobs. They exist because they’ve been around music for forever, they’re educated, or they simply loathe the idea of shortcuts, unoriginal artistic

expression. To many, music is their passion, they take it very seriously. Back in the day, DJs and producers had to pay their dues, they had to have a lot of talent, and technology wasn’t exactly on their side. All that has changed. Technology has made many things easier, and the EDM boom has generated more money and more millions of fans than anyone ever thought possible. It’s important to try and see things through the eyes, ears of an artist. For some, this is an art. For others, it’s a business. DJs make 90% of their money from touring, and those gigs come from one thing… demand. Gone are the days of the top dogs being masterful DJs of the dance floor like the Global Underground jocks of past. Now, a producer/DJ might blow up overnight from one hit going viral. Soon after, he has a marketing team, high level management, and is suddenly a superstar. Others want nothing to do with this culture of jumping around behind pre-programmed sets, at overpriced, overcrowded festivals and clubs. They only care about the music, and would rather leave it, than ever taint its purity and art. They would rather starve, than sell out. The most beautiful thing in all this, is the infinite music and artistry that exists between the two ends of this massive spectrum. Somewhere in that, if you love electronic music, is a place with plenty of room for you and your friends. This biggest difference between commercial, and underground dance music is this: Commercial dance music is meant to find you, but underground dance music is meant to be found. You have to discover it and go on some type of journey, which ends up being part of the magic. You seek out lesser known DJs, producers, record labels, and clubs. You follow the trails and connections they have to one another, because one thing that will always remain within the underground... connections. Pay little attention to the artists doing what everyone else is already doing. www.beatmag.com

Hallelujah! It’s Easter Time By Erza S.T.

I

t is the time for the Easter bunny to run and prepare those gorgeous eggs for children around the world as April has arrived. This month also marks the arrival of spring and that we are just about to end the first quarter of 2015. As for Jakarta’s classical music aficionados this can only mean one thing and that is: Easter concerts! Starting as a tradition by the Christian churches, Easter concert celebrations are a way to convey our gratitude to Jesus Christ who died to save Christians and also to celebrate his resurrection. In this tradition, aside from having mass, churches also give classical music performances featuring

compositions from various composers in theme of Easter. Aula Simfonia Jakarta with its regular concert series also highlights Easter time as a concert theme. For this year, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and Jakarta Oratorio Society under the baton of Dr. Jahja Ling will go big by giving us great Easterthemed works from Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Berlioz, Handel and Verdi. Born in Jakarta, of Indonesian-Chinese parents, and currently a U.S. citizen, Jahja Ling is the first and only conductor of Chinese descent to become a music director of a major U.S. orchestra, and has conducted every prominent symphony orchestra in North America.

Like Bernstein, Ling often dances on the podium, embodying his avowed mission to inspire his musicians to “move people’s souls and people’s hearts” when they play. He started playing the piano at age four, won a Rockefeller grant to study at the prestigious Juilliard School, medaled at the Arthur Rubinstein International Competition, and was awarded a Tanglewood Fellowship to study conducting with famed maestro Leonard Bernstein. He’s conducted at the state visit of the Queen of England and Prince of Edinburgh in San Francisco, and accompanied Whitney Houston’s national anthem at Super Bowl XXV. Talented pianist Jessie Chang who is also the beloved wife of Dr. Jahja Ling, is the concerts solo pianist performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17. As a mother of two, Jessie has received top honors in more than 30 distinguished piano competitions of national and international stature, including various first prizes. She has the distinguished honor of being the first person to have won four gold medals at the US Open Music Competition.

Among the highlights of her career, Mrs. Chang appeared at the Blossom Festival with the Cleveland Orchestra playing Mozart’s double concerto with her duo-partner and husband, Jahja Ling. She has been featured at the Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium, Pasadena’s Ambassador Auditorium and in front of 28,000 people at Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta. Mrs. Chang has played with various other orchestras including the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Florida Orchestra, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic, the China Philharmonic, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, and the Guangzhou Symphony. CD REVIEW

Björk

Vulnicura

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

For more than two decades, Björk Guðmundsdóttir, plain old Björk to you and I, has never been one to shy away from eccentricity, but unlike so many other avant-garde artists, she has never strayed too far from the mainstream music radar. It’s perhaps not surprising then, that for her latest outing, we find everyone’s favourite monosyllabic Icelandic siren (bit of a one-horse race that, granted) trussed up like a human dandelion, and baring her soul after what sounds like an extremely unpleasant break up from American artist Matthew Barney.

Haxan Cloak on production duties has ensured that this is no faux-Broadway number or acoustic-guitar led sob-a-thon. Instead, Vulnicura lays down its musical intentions on opener “Stonemilker”:cinematic string arrangements over jarring electronic beats. It’s an approach that works extremely well given the subject matter, and consequently this ode to an ended relationship feels all the more genuine thanks largely to the album’s stark arrangements.

too. “Moments of clarity are so rare, I better document this” she goes on to tell us; the first six tracks literally doing just that - each one with a sort of pre/post breakup date stamp documented in the sleeve notes in the form of ‘five months before’ or ‘two months after’, charting the journey from bleak despair to eventually, on “Atom Dance” and “Quicksand”, cautious optimism.

Lyrically, rather than a bunch of forlorn clichés, we get a very real account of what’s going on in her head: “These abstract complex feelings, I just don’t know how to handle them” she confides honestly on “Lionsong”. It’s the kind of line you wouldn’t normally expect from Björk, as so much of her work is steeped in ambiguity, but here she’s getting straight to the emotional point; essentially, breaking up is not only hard to do, but its cruelly confusing

By its very nature, Vulnicura is at times an uncomfortable listen - for every gorgeous phrase or chorus there is always a darker, more unsettling moment just around the corner. “Black Lake” stretches to more than 10 minutes, frequently descending into a single, claustrophobic note lasting for almost 30 seconds, and “Family” features a queasy ensemble of chopped up violins and cellos that will struggle to get anyone’s toes tapping. Don’t let that put you off though, the majority of Vulnicura is Björk at her best. Dan Ashcroft.

3 Steps to Get Healthy Lips Cleanse

STYLE

E

ver experienced dry lips, chapped lips, or other problems like dark-coloured lips? This is actually normal for women as our lips are frequently exposed to cosmetics. Compared with our face, our lips have more layers, meaning that they need more serious treatment to keep healthy. Here, we share the tips and tricks to get that fresh look on your lips. You just need to spend five minutes to do these rituals daily to get results.

By Elin Ivana (www.clozettedaily.com)

Moisture Most women love to apply lip balm in the middle of their activities, and this has actually been a correct way to protect your lips. The function of a lip balm is not only to moisturize. It can also be a shield for your lips and protect it from adverse effect caused by the sun. For a better protection, pick the lip balm which contains a Sun Protection Factor or SPF.

For lips cleansing, mix coconut milk and rose water which can be used to massage your lips. Apply this for two to three minutes every morning, and for the further treatment, you can also add baby oil. A regular application will result in soft and smooth lips.

Exfoliate Create your own scrub by mixing lemon squeeze, tomato squeeze, granulated sugar and yogurt. For a better result, you can also add turmeric in the mixture. Apply this scrub evenly on your lips, and give your lips a massage for a minute before you wash it down with water. This scrub can help to remove the dead skin on your lips and brighten it. www.beatmag.com

Fashion Trend:

How to Wear Polkadots By Elin Ivana (www.clozettedaily.com)

P

olka dot has been an all time favourite motif, but behind its chic and timeless character, you also need to be careful in styling it. As this motif is a bit tricky, an improper styling can result in an odd look. However, you don’t need to worry. Polka dot, which has been popular since the 1950s, can be a quite diverse look, from the playful to the formal look. And here, we share some tips.

When you plan to add some polka dots into today’s style, you also have to know the proportion and size of your body. For the petite girls, pick a dress with small-sized polka dots. Whereas, the tall girls, dresses with big polka dots will be perfect for you. For the office look, you can pick a blouse or shirt with polka dots. Pair the top with an A-line skirt in bold colours (pictured) if you

want to create a more cheerful impression on your style. As a fresher and simpler alternative, you can also pick polka dot dresses or pants for your working outfit. Polka dot accessories will also create statements alike. Pick the outfit with neutral colours and motif, and add an accent of playfulness though your polka dot shawl, bandage, clutch or shoes.

FOOD

to a superb new place for wining and dining. Located at the Plaza Indonesia, Wine Connexion opened just before Valentine’s Day this year.

The spacious interior is quite impressive. You can enjoy unparalleled views and ambiance, as well as unrivaled menu execution. And with the name like Wine Connexion, wine lovers will certainly love this place. Almost everywhere you look, you’ll see cabinets filled from floor to ceiling with bottles of wine (and also some liquor)! There’s also a temperature-controlled wine storage room, and an Enomatic wine dispensing machine ready to serve you. With over 5,000 bottles from all over the world to choose from at the restaurant, there’s definitely something for everyone. Wine Connexion offers a sophisticated yet relaxed dining experience, and young French Chef Alexandre Riehl with his masterful grasp of French and Asian cuisine leads the kitchen. For those of you looking for a lighter fare, the tapas can be your choice.

FOOD Try the Truffle Fries (45k), Deep Fried Frog Legs with Caribbean Spicy Sauce ((50k), Prosciutto di Parma served with Olive Tapenade and Crostini (95k), or go for the European Sharing Platter (125k), which consists of Chef Alexandre’s selection of tapas to share. From the range of starters, we opted for the simple yet wonderful taste of the Parisian Mushroom Veloute and Truffle Cream Soup (65k). This has got to be one of the best mushroom soups in town that we’ve ever tasted! We highly recommend it. After a great start, we moved on to some of the Chef’s signature dishes. And again, wethoroughly enjoyed every single one of them. The Nasi Goreng and Duck Leg Confit (75k) is a great example of Indonesian and French mélange in a plate; two of the nations’ most favorite food coming together in a harmoniously delicious dish. Another delightful dish is the Creamy Angel Hair with Grilled Foie Gras (165k), a luxurious taste of al dente angel hair pasta topped with rich, succulent foiegras. Divine, just divine. Now, the Grilled Australian Prime Rib (275k) will thrill all you carnivores out there. The steak was grilled to perfection and served with sautéed mushroom, thin onion rings, and doused with red wine sauce. Simply scrumptious. Like we mentioned earlier, there are more than enough choices of wine for you to pick to accompany your meal, but mocktails like the Lychees Crush, Kiwi Mint, or Sugarcane Mojito (45k each) are noteworthy, too. With one of the best collections of wine in Jakarta and outstanding dishes, Wine Connexion is a solid choice for foodies and wine lovers alike. The restaurant can be perfect location for dinner before attending a midtown event later in the evening. But better yet, why don’t you stick around and enjoy Dream Ultra Lounge next door for cocktails and caviar? (Budi Iskandar)

FOOD

A little corner of Paris, with some surprises

G

arçon Bistro, Bar & Pattiserie was opened in December 2013. With a name like that, it’s probably safe to say that the menu is heavy on French bistro fare, but there's more than that here. The kitchen team is headed by Chef Camille Benedetto-Flosse, who has been trained for 18 years in classic French cuisine with a Mediterranean infusion. His classic French dishes are also given tasty twists of his love for Asian cooking. We visited the restaurant on a weekday lunchtime. And judging by the crowd, Garçon certainly has plenty of admirers. When you enter the restaurant, you can’t miss the amazing array of desserts and pastries on display. More on that later.

62

www.beatmag.com

FOOD The décor has a timeless look about it, with wooden paneling and classic tiles, and a nice juxtaposition of dark furniture and white table tops. There’s also a slight touch of art deco design. The menu has a good selection of comfort bistro food like soups, salads, pastas, and all your usual mains like steaks and fish. But since we came for lunch, we were intrigued by Garçon’s Lunch Sets. The staff informed us that these specials (a two-course meal set at 128k and 168k) change every two weeks, to keep patrons on their toes and give them different delicious options every now and then. Many of the lunch customers here are regulars. Our lunch set started with a foursome Mixed Platter; consisting of Insalata Russia, Grilled Chicken Salad, Tortilla Chips with Spicy Avocado Salad, and Asparagus with Romesco Salsa. We have to say that we loved the latter the most; that Romesco Salsa is truly something! Next up, we had the Australian Sirloin in “Flying Tiger” sauce, served with jasmine rice. Now this is a prime example of the Chef’s Asian influence. The medium-rare sirloin is paired with white rice, and served with a mouthwatering spicy, tangy sauce. Another example of Asian fare in the lunch special is the Fish in Papillote with mixed veggies and sauce Vierge; a Thai-style curry that gives other Thai restaurants in town a run for their money! Speaking of the desserts… There are so many to choose from, but our pick of the Pineapple Vacherin (60k) is just out of this world! The use of the best Sumatran pineapples scored big on our list! For a more ‘traditional’ dessert, go for the Valrhona Chocolat Mousse with crispy and crunchy tuil (70k). Pure chocolaty heaven! The Specialty Juice (58k each) like the yoghurtand-fruits blend Ambrosie is very refreshing. But the Specialty Cocktails (98k) here are magnificent. Ladies will love the Sweet Escape; a mix of vodka, gin, watermelon, pineapple, and lemon, while the gents might prefer the Men’s Only, made with Barbados aged rum, aperol, and Grand Marnier. Garçon is definitely a crowd pleaser of the highest order. And yes, we will try other items on their menu. Soon! (Budi Iskandar)

ALFRESCO @FIVE A little escape from the hubbub of the city.

Come on, admit it... Jakarta can be unforgiving at times. Especially with the traffic situation. That’s why it’s nice when you find a cozy little spot that gives you a bit of respite from the city’s madness. That was exactly how we felt when we stepped into Alfresco @Five, the restaurant on the fifth floor of Menara Peninsula Hotel in the Slipi area. A friend of ours recommended this place, and it’s easy to see why. The spacious restaurant by the poolside is a nice break from the usual cafés or other meeting places. Alfresco has a laid back, easy Sunday vibe about it. The outside patio can be a nice area to have a relaxing drink with some snacks, or to have an informal meeting after the end of office hours. It’s also a good choice for business gatherings, product launch, or even

FOOD semi-outdoor weddings. Its versatility is a great selling point for the restaurant. But, we were there to sample the food. And on a recent hot weekday, Alfresco seemed like a nice breather from all the bustle down below. The Watermelon Feta Salad (88.8k) started us on the right note; a unique mixture of watermelon with goat cheese, rocket leaves, onions, with white wine vinegar dressing that will give a fresh kick to your palate. Another noteworthy salad here is the Smoked Salmon Caesar Salad (88.8k); the Norwegian salmon gave the old favorite a lift. The snacks like BBQ Wings, Wedges or Fries, and Nachos are available in Private, Share, and Party sizes. They are perfect to enjoy with your buddies over your preferred tipple from the bar.

We continued on to the grilled section on the menu. You can have the 300g Tenderloin (288k), 300g Lamb Chop (248k), or 250g Sirloin (228.8k) along with your choice of sauce and sides. But our pick of the Lamb Shank (228.8k) was just special. And the buttered rice, grilled asparagus, and mushroom sauce complemented the lamb very harmoniously. Oops, we almost forgot to mention that there’s a wood-fire pizza oven by the patio outside. With a poolside surrounding like that, we felt like the Mexican Beef Pizza (98.8k) best captured our mood; ground beef, guacamole, jalapeño, salsa, sour cream, onion, green and red capsicum, and mozzarella. ¡Delicioso! The fresh fruit juices (62.8k) offered a refreshing coda; pick your choice of fruit or mix two or three of them together for 70.8k, or better yet, add yoghurt for 20k more to make a smoothie. Don’t miss the poolside Sunday Brunch (300k, including drinks) is getting popular here. Available from 11 am to 2.30pm, it can be a great way to enjoy the weekend with your family and loved ones. For dining, drinking, or having a party or event, Alfresco is a good option to have in the city! (Budi Iskandar) www.beatmag.com

Plus, there are 8 settings to adjust the lights color temperature and brightness. Plus, the Magic Lamp of Light and Charging has 3 USB ports to power your goodies: 1 x 2.4A (for your tablets and fast charging) and 2 x 1A (for your cell phones, mp3 players, and other doo-dads). The Magic Lamp of Light and Charging - let it bring light to your world (and charge you up, too)! $129.99 www.thinkgeek.com

The Video Recording WiFi Sunglasses

Meet the Om/ One, the world’s first levitating Bluetooth speaker. The speaker part of the Om/One setup hovers a little less than an inch above its base, using magnetic repulsion. It makes so much sense, we’re surprised we haven’t seen it before. Most speakers already involve large magnets. Why not use them to get a little extra wow factor? Or, let’s be honest, a lot. It’s a freaking levitating speaker. Likeyado. $199.99 www.thinkgeek.com

The Portable WiFi Amplifier This pocket-sized device extends the range and improves the signal strength of a wireless network. The cordless device connects to a wireless network and rebroadcasts the signal to provide a faster, more reliable WiFi connection. The dual band unit delivers broadband-level bandwidth at up to 300 Mbps on 2.4GHz and 433 Mbps on the 5GHz frequency. About the size of a smartphone, the device stores unobtrusively during travel and its rechargeable battery last up to four hours after a three-hour charge via the included USB adapter. $119.95 www.hammacher.com

These sunglasses covertly record video and automatically transfer it wirelessly to a smartphone. A pinhole-sized lens in the bridge of the frame captures full 1080p x 1920 high-definition video at 30 frames per second. A built-in Wi Fi antenna sends recorded video to a free downloadable app on a paired iPhone or Android-powered smartphone, allowing you to easily watch surreptitious, first-person video. Video is captured across a 63° angle, the integrated microphone records audio, and the device also takes 5 megapixel still images with a touch of a button on the right side of the frame. It’s rechargeable battery provides up to 60 minutes of video capture after a threehour charge via the included USB cable. The lenses meet UV 380 standards for sun protection and the frames are made from durable molded black plastic. Video can also be stored on an SD card (available below). (1 1/2 oz.) $199.95 www.hammacher.com

GIZMOS MOCORO ROBOT CLEANING BALL Let the Mocoro Robot Cleaning Ball do all the work. It’s a fluffy robotic duster with a mind of its own; roaming freely around your home picking up dust and filth, changing direction whenever it hits an obstacle so it doesn’t get stuck in tight corners or insist on trying to go upstairs. To stop this playful ball from wasting battery there’s an internal timer that pauses it after 15 minutes until disturbed again (a very gentle kick will do). The pink microfibre coat can be brushed clean and is easily removed to be hand or machine washed. Did we also mention that it’s the greatest cat toy ever made? Now you can come home to sparkly clean floors and exhausted pets. £24.99 www.firebox.com

CAT PAW MASSAGER We’re not suggesting for one moment that kneading a human belly with the Cat Paw Massager will yield milk (our experiments have thus far proved fruitless), but we are saying that it’s feels incredibly comforting and natural for everyone involved. Just like a cat’s dainty paws, these handheld mitts are endowed with soft, rounded pads; simply press them down onto an area of your body that needs a little relief and they’ll gently (but firmly) vibrate to soothe and caress your overworked muscles. £9.99 www.firebox.com

Emergency Handcrank Power Radio

The rechargeable Emergency Handcrank Power Radio keeps you connected to the world when severe weather strikes. It’s fully loaded with a digital AM/FM radio, shortwave radio and seven 24-hour NOAA weather stations with alerts that sound during tornados and other emergencies. Features include a 5-LED reading light, LED flashlight, digital clock with dual alarms, carry strap and onboard USB charging station for all iPhones, Galaxies, Blackberrys and other portable devices. Runs on solar power, rechargeable battery, handcrank power or disposable batteries. $79.99 www.sharperimage.com

Activity and Sleep Tracker

Keeping fit is easy and stylish with the rechargeable Activity and Sleep Tracker. It monitors your activity and sleep 24 hours a day, and shows you the results with color-coded LED lights. It also sends detailed reports via Bluetooth 4.0 to your iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy or other Android device, which you can share on Facebook or Twitter. Track your sleep time, steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned and more. Includes free app and comfortable, adjustable black silicone band. Compatible with iPhone (4S and newer), iPad (3rd gen or newer), Samsung Galaxy 4, HTC One, LG Nexus, Motorola X and Sony Xperia. $79.99 www.sharperimage.com
