Well, after a short hiatus, The Beat magazine is back and ready to serve up the nightlife information of this glorious city once again for you folks living, working or just visiting Jakarta. You can find the magazine in just about every proper restaurant, club or hotel (ask your concierge) around the city. So yes, it’s now time to get your boogie back on as August is here and after a refreshing month of personal reflection and healthy attitude it must be time to get out there again and have a good time. And there’s plenty on around the traps to achieve that. As we all know now, we have a new president in Indonesia after a rather rough and tumble election process that looked like was going to take us to the brink but thankfully didn’t. We thank all the level heads for that. Jokowi looks like the man to take us to the end of the decade with flying colours and hopefully makes the grueling bureaucratic procedures, for one thing, easier to bare in this country. We say good luck to him and may he do a great job for the country. The nightlife events will start up slowly, but by the middle of the month the whole place should be firing on all cylinders. Watch out for a number of events at Colosseum including D&D Girls, DJ Tomas Heredia, Hell in High Heels and DJ Feel. Then for you indie rock lovers, get down to our Beat Room at Fez Dungeon, now on Thursday nights in the Kemang venue for some top new recording bands playing live and hot, or sweet. There is a mix of everything this month. There are plenty more shows on around the city over the next month too – check inside for more details. BTW, X2 will open again after renovations on September 5, while Equinox opens in early August and their new bar called Bugsy’s opens soon. We hope you enjoy this edition of The Beat magazine. Any comments, ideas or feedback please send to editor@beatmag.com.

Dub Pistol

Jason O’Bryan Jason O’Bryan has worked as a musician, producer and DJ for the last 25 years. The majority of that time he spent working with his band the Dub Pistols, but also worked on many sideprojects including Ceasefire (Wall of Sound) and Avenue A (R&S). He first came to Jakarta around four years ago with his Indonesian wife Yenny, and while here was asked to become the head of the audio department at SSR Jakarta, a school teaching skills in music production and sound engineering. TBJ had a quick chat with Jason about his past in music and his present life in Jakarta.

26

www.beatmag.com

FEATURE TBJ: So tell us a little history about Jason O’Bryan Jason: I have always been interested in music and technology for as long as I can remember. I was part of the hip hop generation so as a teen I would mess around with mixers, cassettes decks, keyboards and make crude electro music. I began playing the bass when I was around 14 and was lucky enough to get a record deal with my first band at the age of 17, which exposed me to the top London studios and working with great engineers and producers. From there my love of the studio evolved, and I gradually put together my home studio where I made music outside the band with other friends, one of those projects was called ‘Ceasefire’ alongside Mark Pember (Meat Katie) and Derek Dahlarge. The first thing we recorded was a track called ‘Trickshot’ which became quite a big hit in the UK and really opened the doors for me. At this time I was also working at a studio called Kingsize as a sound engineer, through a mutual friend I met, Barry Ashworth, who had heard ‘Trickshot’ and wanted to work with me on his newly formed Dub Pistols project, this was around 1995. We hit it off really well and started working on remixes and album tracks for the first Dub Pistols album Point Blank such as “Cyclone”, “Best Got Better” and “Unique Freak”. The band quickly became sought after and shortly after we signed to David Geffen’s label in Los Angeles and began to work frequently on movie soundtracks (Blade 2, Zoolander etc) and tour the band in the USA. This would have been the late nineties at that point, from what I can remember! Who else have you worked with since then? During that time I was asked to write original material with Busta Rhymes. We first worked together on a tune called ‘The One’ which featured on the Blade 2 soundtrack. I was also fortunate to work with Terry Hall from the Specials, Horace Andy from Massive Attack and reggae legend Gregory Isaacs who all contributed guest vocals to Dub Pistols projects. I was also working on many remix projects at the time for artists such as Bono (U2), Moby, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Lily Allen, Natalie Imbruglia, Scissor Sisters, Ian Brown and too many others to list here.

How about in Jakarta, how’s that been going? Since coming here I have had the opportunity to work with some great Indonesian artists. I have built a good working relationship with the band ‘Nidji’, whose members Ariel and Andro were actually students of mine at SSR. I mixed five songs for them recently for the soundtrack to the movie ‘Tenggelamnya Kapal van der Wijck’ including the singles ‘Sumpah dan Cinta Matiku’ and ‘Teroesir’ which reached number one on the iTunes chart here. We have plans to work on an electronic project together soon. I also mixed a track for Last Child called ‘Tak Pernah Ternilai’, which has done really well and have co-written an original track with Souljah called ‘Satu Frequency’. At the moment I am putting the finishing touches to a movie soundtrack for Made in Bali for Mike Pohorly, a Canadian film director. I saw you were playing with the Dub Pistols last week in London. Is the band still together or was that some kind of reunion? Thats right, it wasn’t a reunion though! The band is still going strong and headline many sold out shows across the world. I joined the band at some of the UK festivals they were playing in July. It was great to be on stage with the boys again. Barry and I are still very close and we have plans to work together on tracks for the new Pistols’ album. Unfortunately my location makes it difficult to join them on tour regularly, so my present work with them is production based conducted over the internet. I am still actively involved in putting together all their DJ mixes for SoundCloud, which is great as it keeps me up to date with what’s happening in the London club scene. You said at the beginning you had been involved in DJing since 25 years ago. What kind of music are you spinning now and how has that evolved over the years? Well my style has obviously changed quite a lot over the last 25 years. When I first started out I was playing hip hop, and that evolved into house, acid and breakbeat during the nineties. My work with the Dub Pistols ignited my love of Reggae and Ska music in parallel with that, so I have always had a varied taste in music which I think is healthy also being a record producer. The remixes I did as Dub Pistols were always www.beatmag.com

FEATURE for the dance floor and electronic based and my DJ sets reflect that approach. Nowadays I’m playing deep electronic music, having said that, I recently did a dub, hip hop and rockerbilly set at the Camden Bar in Jakarta. I always like to create my own edits of the tunes I play also to give the crowd something different whenever I can and play something unique. I guess I adapted that concept from the old reggae soundsystems, where if you wanted to hear a certain tune you would have to see a particular DJ who had that exclusive pressing. I imagine you travel quite a lot around the world doing your projects. How about the DJing itself, have you been doing that as a side project or a dedicated profession?

It looked like you enjoyed playing live again with the Pistols though. How long have you been DJing electronic music and how does it compare to the live music gigs? I have been DJing and putting together DJ sets for radio on behalf of the Dub Pistols for around 15 years now. Nothing can replace the feeling of touring with a band of close friends and experiencing the highs and lows together, you become a gang and I have some incredible memories, but I also love DJing, it’s great to see a crowd of people reacting to what you play and having a great time. It’s also the perfect place to road test my studio productions. I’m a music lover foremost so I guess it will always be in my blood. I’m currently developing my DJ sets to be a bit different and incorporate more live elements in the near future. So much is possible now with all the new technology available, the future is definitely very exciting. I have been extremely lucky to see most of the world as part of my job. I have toured most cities in the US, worked in Mexico, Argentina, New York, Los Angeles, Barbados and parts of Asia. My DJing has always been a passion for me, but now I plan to focus on it more. I guess my love of touring and performing needs some output again! Once you have had a taste of the rock n’ roll lifestyle it’s hard to look back!

Heavenly Creatures Out to Find Their Way

FEATURE

F

ounded three years ago, Polka Wars has made great strides to be one of the city’s most admired bands in the indie alternative rock scene. The Beat talks to them about music, purpose, and being heaven-sent.

earth creatures and sky beings. We believe at first we were heavenly creatures, where at one point we descended to earth. Unfortunately we lost our way and don’t know how to return to heaven. The best thing for us now is to balance these two roles.

How would you explain what Polka Wars is about to those who are not yet familiar with the band? What does Polka Wars mean? A decent Jakarta based band playing decent music. At first Polka Wars meant nothing. Our purpose was just to make people curious about its meaning. After we went with the name it can be said that polka and wars is a merger of two contradictions, between the hard and soft, sweet and bitter, anything that is contradicting, but complementing each other. That’s the beauty of life isn’t it?

Aside from completing an album, what are the band’s plans for 2014-2015? We want to record a few tracks in Brooklyn, New York, this September thanks to Converse Rubber Tracks (a free, community-based professional recording studio), woohoo! We plan to release our album in November this year. We plan to make merchandise this year, one will be launched in our Fez Dungeon The Beat Room gig on August 14. We want to record our second album in 2015 in our recently built private practice studio. Hopefully we can finally release our 7” vinyl single (with Orange Cliff Records from Bandung). We also want to tour Indonesia and one day the world! Last but not least, releasing some of our own solo music.

Can you explain more about Polka Wars’ distinctive “sound of honest feelings and gentle confusions wrapped in layers of sonic pleasure?” Four individuals with different perspectives will bring some sort of confusion. We try to be honest with ourselves, and embrace the confusion and pour it into our music. In turn it becomes a pleasurable experience for us, which we hope to share with our audience. Our music is also enriched by our friends’ sounds of keyboard, synth, saxophone and trumpets which help to enrich our sonic color. What keeps the band excited to play music together despite the busy individual schedules? It’s what we always wanted to do since we were kids. And it’s always exciting when new music is taking shape right before our very ears. We just want to make something that we can be proud of, at least to show off to our kids and grand kids, and for us to stay (in)sane: while we become insane with our music, it makes us to be more sane in the real world. Tell us about the band’s most memorable experiences? Playing for our friend’s wedding was really fun. It makes us happy that we could entertain the people we care about on their special day. The band is working on its first album. What will it be about? It’s about anything and everything that shapes us to be men in this day and age. Our philosophy is that it talks about how to balance our lives as

What is your take/understanding on the national indie rock scene? It’s really, really great. We are grateful that we could experience these times where lots of good things are happening. And we hope it’ll grow larger, stronger and better. For a society that is pressured economically and politically it’s all the more reason to create great works. Indonesia has the potential to export a lot of talented musicians and sounds, at least in the Asia Pacific market. With which band/ singer do you dream to share a stage with? Why? We really want to collaborate with Dried Cassava, Sigmun, Sapphira Singgih, TOR, and Space System, Matajiwa. Internationally, we’re thinking about Rodrigo Amarante, Danger Mouse, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and Jonny Greenwood. Who can you say is the “typical” fan of Polka Wars? What is your message for your fans? I hope everyone is. Our message is that we thank you for all your support. We hope our listeners shall enjoy our very first album that we are working on right now. Please stay tuned! CATCH POLKA WARS IN THE BEAT ROOM ON THURSDAY AUGUST 14 FROM 8PM IN FEZ DUNGEON, KEMANG. www.beatmag.com

CLASSICAL

We

are entering the last part of 2014 and as always in August, I was expecting to see concerts lining up to celebrate our country’s independence. However, up till now and writing this article, I still cannot find any groups or performers who will make concerts to celebrate our independence. Nevertheless, we need not worry as we do have other classical events that might enchant you this month. Aula Simfonia Jakarta returns for their monthly concert and this time they are going to use the organ pipe to perform Bach’s renowned Organ Concerto No. 1 in D Minor. Being faithful on keeping Bach on their monthly program, I have to say that this composition is actually quite amusing. The sound of organ pipes on this piece is almost hypnotizing and continuous like the falling rain. Dr. Billy Kristanto as Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s resident conductor, who is also an accomplished organist will perform this piece together with the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra. Another familiar solo pianists of Aula Simfonia Jakarta: Indah Lestari Hertanto – who graduated from Towson University in Maryland, USA will also perform one of the most famous classical compositions by Rachmaninoff: “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini”. In this piece you can see not only technical precision on playing piano but also an insight on performing Rachmaninoff’s composition, which makes it so much fun to see. As always, good things come in threes and so is Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s August program. Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B Minor is chosen as the last composition, featuring Yao Zhao as the cellist. Hailed by Los Angeles Times as “being able to handle the most intricate musical works with unblinking ease and expressive zeal,” Yao Zhao is without a doubt a

superb Chinese cellist. His performance is not to be missed! The other good things that are coming in August are master classes by two young, yet accomplished musicians. Uber talented Indonesian pianist Adhi Jacinth, who graduated from Freiburg Conservatory, and sensational Singaporean violinist Jun Hong Loh, who graduated from The Julliard School are both giving master classes for the first time at Konservatorium Musik Jakarta and Erasmus Huis. Jun Hong Loh will also give a recital at Erasmus Huis where he is going to amuse you with some famous violin pieces from Tchaikovsky, Sarasate, Beethoven and Brahms. So as you can see, August will be quite a busy month for classical music. Now, I am wondering what September will bring to our classical music scene. “I wish I was dead already” said Lana Del Rey in an interview last month, bemoaning the intense critical backlash she experienced shortly after her self-titled debut album hit shelves late in 2010. Born Elizabeth Grant, the diminutive 28-year-old starlet has copped more than her fair share of flak, as everyone on the Internet continues to argue over the authenticity of her ‘West Coast tear-streaked mascara bad girl’ persona. Any hints that this alleged façade may indeed all be a carefully marketed sham are quickly dispelled here on Del Rey’s third LP, which is shot through with tragic masochistic daydreams and unguarded confessions that are wholly uncharacteristic of the usual circumspect record company guff. You don’t have to dig too deep into her psyche to see that this self-styled “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” is the kind of girl who you really shouldn’t take home to meet your mum: “I get high on hydroponic weed” she tells us, before adding later; “I f*&ked my way to the top”. Keep listening and Ultraviolence is stuffed with similarly outrageous sound bites, the most disturbing of which is the line “He hit me and it felt like a kiss” from the title track, which is bound to raise eyebrows amongst concerned anti-domestic violence campaigners, Chris Brown, and of course anyone who reads the Daily Mail. To put things into perspective, the controversial line is actually borrowed from The Crystals’ 1962 song of the same name, but still, a peculiar and deeply tragic fantasy: “If my choice is to be with a lot of men, or if I enjoy a really physical relationship, I don’t think that’s necessarily being anti-feminist,” she stated in defence of her stance. It’s pretty dark, but offsetting the anguish is an intoxicating mix of simply beautiful melodies, thanks largely to Black Key Dan Auerbach on production duties. Apparently Del Rey had finished Ultraviolence some months ago, and a chance meeting with Auerbach resulted in the pair agreeing to rework everything to create a more ‘California hangover’ ambience. Woozy guitars, velvety strings and lazy beats swirl around the perennially suicidal chanteuse, whose breathy, sultry vocals have vastly improved over the last two years, despite being frequently channelled through purposely cheapo microphones bought at dollar stores to give all that tainted beauty a suitably rough edge. The recurring themes of illicit crushes, sexual promiscuity and drug use do get somewhat heavy handed, but Del Rey is clearly past caring what people think: “If you don’t like it, you can beat it baby,” she challenges on “Brooklyn Baby”, firmly aimed at all the haters out there. For the record, I’m not one of them. Dan Ashcroft

We are all about action/drama this issue; starting us off with the Guardians of the Galaxy and heading on to the sequel of the sequel of the Expendables, expect nothing less than lots of explosions and chaos. After that we head over to Australia for a more dramatic touch with The Rover. These three movies are coming out in August and are definitely worth watching. Enjoy yourself at Cinema 21.

Guardians of the Galaxy Action, Adventure, Sci-fi. Director; James Gunn. Writers; James Gunn, Nicole Perlman, Dan Abnett (comic book), Andy Lanning (comic book). Cast: Chris Pratt, Lee Pace, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Josh Brolin. Expanding the Marvel cinematic universe into the cosmos, Guardians of the galaxy revolves around Peter Quill, a half human/half alien that is now the main target of a manhunt by a villain known as Ronan the Accuser after stealing a mysterious orb in the far reaches of outer space. To stay alive, Quill has to form an unlikely alliance with a band of space misfits named; Rocket, Groot, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer. Together they are known as the guardians of the galaxy and will try to somehow save the universe.

Expendables 3 Action, Adventure, Thriller. Director: Patrick Hughes. Writers: Sylvester Stallone (screenplay), Creighton Rothenberger, KatrinBenedikt. Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Continuing with the franchise, The Expendables 3 is about the Expendables needing to save the President of the United States. While on their mission, they clash with several younger, technology oriented action heroes. In the Expendables 3 the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks, who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill... or so he thought. This Expendables is Pg-13 which is pretty lame, but with an all star cast, let’s hope the cameos and over the top action will be entertaining enough.

The Rover Crime, Drama. Director: David Michôd. Writer: Joel Edgerton (story), David Michôd (screenplay). Cast: Guy Pearce, Chan Kien, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy, TawandaManyimo, David Field. Ten years after a global economic collapse, a hardened loner in the middle of the Australian desert is robbed of his only possession, his car. A gang of criminals break into it but Eric manages to injure one of the thieves. Along the way, the duo form an uneasy bond during the dangerous journey. The man held captive can’t stop thinking about his brother leaving him behind to die and promises Eric that he’ll get him his car back. Watch as Eric and the assailant elude the dangers of the outback whilst creating their own mayhem.

The Caveman Beauty Regimen by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com

I’ve

been reading a bunch of articles on the internet that talked about something called the caveman regimen, which literally takes skincare back to the stone age. This is basically a skincare routine that requires you to not wash your face or put any products on it for 30 days. Thirty days of no products or cleansing products on your face. Not even water! This is one of those horror stories that sends shivers down the spine of anyone who regularly practices double cleansing and the religious application of serums, SPF, and everything in between. The theory behind this seemingly wretch-inducing regimen is that products — makeup, cleaners, serum, basically anything you apply to the skin on your face — upset the skin’s pH balance and strips away the protective acid mantle that combat bacteria that causes zits. So the theory postulates that skin has the ability to “heal” itself, and the application of makeup, soaps, serums, and creams

48

www.beatmag.com

only inhibit its self-regulation. The efficacy of this regimen is boosted by the accounts on blogs and skin care forums from people who claim this method has helped them clear their acne — in fact, most of the information on the internet regarding this unconventional routine is based on people who have severe acne issues. I enjoy the “less is more” philosophy too, I don’t think I’ll be practicing this method anytime soon, especially since I live in a city with serious pollution problems. Another issue I have with the caveman regimen is this: skin cells regenerate every 27 days or so, which means dead skin cells just sit there if you don’t help slough it off with some sort of exfoliating process. I’m not ready to stop scrubbing, and I’m definitely not ready to go about my days without makeup. So while I’m not completely sold on it, I am interested in the idea of minimizing the use. Does the caveman regimen sound like something you’d like to try out? Would you be okay with thirty days of no makeup or cleansing whatsoever?

Girls of Rock:

Famous Eyeliner Looks in Music History

T

he relationship between some musicians and their eyeliner is so symbiotic that they become almost unrecognizable without it! Here are a couple of artists whose eye makeup proclivities have become seared into pop culture history as being part of their image.

Maria Callas by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com

After her vocal chords and diva outbursts, Maria Callas is also known for never going without a good cat-eye. She can pile it on as minimally or dramatically as she wants,

and she can pull it off. I think that like red lipstick, part of the cat-eye look is the innate chutzpah needed to pull it off. So fake it til you make it!

Amy Winehouse The height of Amy Winehouse’s career also coincided with a dramatic spike in sales of liquid eyeliner. Actually, I don’t know if that’s true at all, but I wouldn’t

be surprised if that were the case. In any case, her premature death in 2011 sent shockwaves through the music industry, and resulting in an Amy-shaped hole in my life where her music ought to be.

The Ronettes This trio, made up of two sisters and a cousin, produced some of the most hum-able ditties of the 1960s. Their

music remains an endearing benchmark of that era — not to mention the beehive hair and eye makeup, of course!

Iggy Azalea A lot of people felt that the Australian rapper came out of nowhere when “Work”, her 2013 toe-tapping single, came out. But in reality, she spent many years hustling before being picked up by T.I. and making her mark in

the Southern hip hop scene. This woman has an amazing work ethic, outgunned only by her songwriting talent and ability to call out ignorant misogynists on their crap — she deserves all the acclaim directed at her.

Billie Joe Armstrong I know this column is called Girls of Rock, but I’ll shave my own head before I leave guyliner out of this list! American punk rock band Green Day formed 27 years ago (Green Day and I are the same age??), but their lyrics remain relevant to

teenagers of any era. They are responsible for having written some of the most memorable music in pop punk history, and frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is also responsible for an entire generation of boys who went out and rocked it in eyeliner. www.beatmag.com

Maybelline Hypersharp vs Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen by: dhnshrtn

femaledaily.com

As you may know, if there were a list called Top Ten Laziest People in South Jakarta, I would be on that list. I already talked about this particular personality defect of mine in my article where I worshiped the cream blush for its simple application and lasting power. But there’s another beauty product that appeals to my lazy side: the liquid eyeliner in marker form. While nowhere as potent as their wand counterparts, they’re far more practical and less messy, making them ideal travel or touch-up companions. The liquid eyeliner

To be honest, I was actually rooting for the Revlon because I’m a big fan of the Revlon Colorstay Liquid Liner in wand form — but the application of the product ended up in patchy strokes. Where the Maybelline Hypersharp resulted in a single smooth line, the formula of the

The tips of each pen differed, which affected the application of the product: the felt tip of the Maybelline Hypersharp was softer, finer, and more flexible. Despite its precise fine tip, application was fairly simple, even for a first-timer. The tip of the Revlon Colorstay was thicker and stiffer, which should make it the ideal candidate if you’re into thick, broad lines. But the stiffness of the felt tip also meant that

But there has never been a proper Italian restaurant at the place. Enter Eatalia, a new Italian eatery that’ll entice foodies from all over the capital. Although relatively small in size, the place is big in charm, and the people there are serious about bringing fine Italian fare to local foodies. There are pastas aplenty; the Fettucine Carbonara, Spaghetti alla Bolognese, Ravioli, Calzone, are true crowd pleasers. But the Antipasti (Appetizer) like the Spinaci Al Gratin or Bruschetta are not to be missed. And for the Secondi Piatti (Main Course) the Ossobucco alla Milanese or Bistecca Al Gorgonzola are the ones to try. Reach for the Skye – NZ in the house. New Zealand born and Australian trained chef, Hamish Lindsay has been in Indonesia for over eight years plying his culinary craft and for most of them as executive chef at Aman Resorts in Bali. He moved to the Ismaya groups’ crowning jewel Skye on the 56th floor rooftop of BCA Tower, Grand Indonesia a few months ago and at an event last month in the restaurant presented his new lunch menu to invited guests. At the event he served a bunch of tantalizing dishes as sharing plates including highlights like the Double Baked Cheese Soufflé, Beef & Foie Gras Carpaccio, Imported 200gm Black Angus Tenderloin, and Thai Stir Fried Seafood. All were bounding with taste and the excellent presentation of a very professional and talented chef. The desserts too were all delightful dishes, like the creative Peanut Butter Panna Cotta one above. He appears to have turned around the fortunes of the stylish restaurant with many business and diplomatic people taking the ride up to the 56th floor for lunch and dinner. “The New Zealand ambassador and staff were here for lunch last week,” he told TBJ. The word is spreading far and wide, dining is now excellent at Skye.

K7 Resto

K 7 is named simply after the street where the hotel is located (Jalan Kunir No. 7). This is an eatery that is very serious about the food. K 7 offers wonderful Pan-Asian fare, mostly influenced by the flavors of China and Japan, and also of Southeast Asia.

Fabulous Pan-Asian flavors at a surprising spot.

A sizeable wine chiller room welcomes you as you walk in. An extensive selection of wines from Australia, California, Europe, and even

owadays, there is more to Jakarta’s Old Town (Kota Tua) than vintage Dutch-era buildings. A number of entertainment venues are popping up there, adding a certain vibrancy to the area.

N

South America is on offer, but there are also some fantastic ice wines which have become a popular choice for many. And yes, pairing wine with Asian food is becoming more and more common.

1001 Hotel is one of those places. Located at the site of the hotel is the popular Colosseum night club, the host of many hip-and-happening DJ and concert events. But we found out that the restaurant there is also making quite a buzz with not only the hotel and club patrons, but Jakarta’s foodies as well.

The restaurant itself has a sultry setting, with sensual dim lighting and elegant marble floor. Three VIP rooms are also available for a more private get togethers.

On to the food. One of the most requested items here is the Steamboat or Shabu Shabu Set (128k). Perfect for sharing, you can choose

FOOD each ingredient that you want to put in the soup yourself (plenty of vegetables and meat options), but the set makes it easier for you.You can also pick up to two kinds of soup per pot; Tom Yam, Szechuan, and Chicken Broth. The attentive staff showed us how to mix the ingredients, plus all the condiments, to get the best out of the hearty dish. And we just had to give this dish a two thumbs up!

You can also try a personal pot of Chinese herbal soup (45k each), like the Chicken Feet with Lotus Root and Bean or the Pork Ribs Soup with Watercress. The blend of herbs and spices is just wonderful. For closer-to-home flavors, we recommend two typical Singapore street food dishes; the Nasi Lemak (50k) and the Mie Curry Laksa (60k). Sure, you can get these dishes from any chain of Kopitiam, but the ones here come with a exceptional chili sauce (different for each item). The dishes are already delicious, but the chili sauce takes it to another level! Sublime!

The refreshing mixed juices (50k) called Batavialavida and Yellow Fathil Juice are perfect to wash all the food down. With a masterful grasp on Asian cuisine, K 7 is a crowd pleaser of the highest order that might just be our new favorite. (Budi Iskandar)

to Cloud with the Poached Eggs with Ariso (Spanish Pasta) and Parmesan Cheese (100k). The risotto-like Ariso is tasty in itself, but combined with the poached egg and Parmesan cheese, it takes a life of its own. Superb!

Cloud offers unparalleled views and ambiance, which encourages a festive lounge atmosphere of after-work types, with locals and tourists alike soaking up the breathtaking vistas at every turn. The Sunset Hours promo (4 - 7pm, Monday – Thursday) in particular, is getting very popular here.

Another similar-yet-different dish is the Broken Fried Eggs with Spanish Sausage (Beef or pork) and Foam Potato (95k). Served in a small pan with some bread on the side, this is one of the specialties here that you simply have to try.You take it up a notch with the Spanish Ham and Green Pepper (110k) or the Grilled Foie Gras With Foam Potato (150k)!

But Cloud is more than just a lookout point. The wonderful menu, courtesy of Spanish Chef Victor Taborda, is also winning praise from Jakarta’s discerning foodies. Most of the selections are tapas and light bites, a perfect way to share with friends and loved ones. So, take pleasure in the whole experience; the dishes, the drinks, and of course, the city scenery from high up. We tried one of the top-notch tapas items, the Don Bocarte Anchovy, Homemade Bread and Tomato (75k). It’s a seemingly simple dish which takes a complex turn when the salty tang of the anchovy hits the sweet tomato. Another noteworthy dish is the signature Stewed Wagyu Beef on Ciabatta Bread with Gratin Aioli (140k). Never before has beef on a piece of bread tasted so good. The chef likes to bring hearty Spanish dishes

We also liked one of the Gourmet Pizzas; our order of the Salmon, Capers, and Black Olives Pizza (180k) certainly hit the spot. As for the signature cocktails (125k), we took our hat off to the Kilimanjaro Snow; a blend of Gordon’s Gin, dry vermouth, mixed citrus juice, and pomegranate, and the Tiramisu Cocktail; a mix of Bailey’s, Bacardi White Rum, and Tia Maria. And for fruity mocktail concoctions, try the Exotic Sunset or Electric 49 (80k each). Another thing you should definitely check out is the Zero Degree Vodka Room. With the room kept at zero Celsius, the temperature is perfect to truly enjoy a sip of vodka. It’s a sensation we highly recommend you to try! BUNS Burger & Cocktails

Taking burgers up a notch makes for a big hit!

W

hen you need a good burger fix, there’s no shortage of eateries competing for your bucks. But standing out from the pack is Three Buns Burger & Cocktails. Since opening in mid-April, the place has become one of the most talked about eateries in town. Three Buns was created by the PTT Family, the people behind the internationally-acclaimed Potato Head outlets. It was a big coup for them to bring Chef Adam Penney, the man behind London’s highly successful burger joint, ‘Patty & Bun’, specifically for the creation of Three Buns. The restaurant has a cool concept; they took the recent food truck craze, but the truck was ‘parked’ inside the restaurant which was decorated like ‘city garden’. And voila, you have a nice respite from the commotion of the city! Rest assured, though, there is plenty of air conditioning here. Graffiti depicting Chef Adam and his bulldog also add a certain street feel to the place. The burgers are on the gourmet side here, the Baby Huey (95k) is the most basic; 150g prime beef patty, cheese, lettuce, ketchup, pickles, and spiced mayo. You can double your fun with the Four Floors (125k); double prime 100g beef patties, double cheese, triple onions, and the works. If you’re looking for a good kick on your burger, try the Burning Man (110k); packed with roasted jalapeno relish, hot ketchup, and dashi mayo. It hurts so good!

Three Buns can satisfy just about every customer. Try the lamb burger called Rambo (120k) with its 150g superior lamb patty. Chicken lovers can go for the Honky-Tonk (100k). And if you’re a meatless man or woman, The Roots (95k) is the perfect veggie burger for you! Using top grade imported meat and artisan buns, all these burgers are truly and uniquely mouth-watering! For the sides, yes, there’s the House Fries (35k), but we strongly suggest the Naughty Fries (45k), spiked with spiced béarnaise, beef chili, crisp shallots, parmesan, and sesame seeds. A must try! Sweet lovers won’t feel left out with the Rich Chocolate or the citrusy Zesty Lemon (45k each) desserts. The bar is another highlight of the restaurant. The wonderful crafted cocktails called Twists (100k each) are made daily and bottled on the premises. The Tropical Thunder is a mix of rum with pineapple, passion fruit, Angostura bitters, lime, and spiced sugar, while the Very Berry blends vodka with blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, lime and honey. For non-alcoholic options, try the Jerks or homemade sodas (30k each) like the interestingly-named and incredibly-tasty Bare Roots Cola, Sherbie Hancock, or Ginger Ninja.

FOOD Recently, the company opened a Three Buns and a Potato Head Folk in Singapore. It’s nice to see a local food venture opening abroad, instead of the other way around. Three Buns brings burgers to the next level and we love it! (Budi Iskandar)

Yielding 1”-long conical-shaped ice cubes in batches of 12, The Best model’s 1.8 lbs.-per-hour ice output was 80% more efficient than other models that could only manage a 1 lb.-per-hour output. The Best model also produced its first batch of well-formed cubes in just under 10 minutes. It’s easy-to-use, drain-free operation simply requires filling its 1.32-gallon reservoir with water, selecting from small to large ice cube sizes, and setting the timer for 1/2-hour to 18-hour continuous operation. It shuts off automatically when the easily removable 2 3/4-lb. capacity bin is full, and any meltwater is filtered and re-used for the next batch.$279.95 www.hammacher.com
