S
ummer is coming! Or more precisely, a transitional period before the heat wave as the year slowly heads towards the summer season even though the mid months haven’t arrived. Right now the high humidity in Jakarta can reach 34 degrees Celsius during midday with windless nights bringing a good sign for outdoor events or rave parties with no need for the aid of the mythical rain handlers of Indonesia. Speaking about rave parties, the recent Djakarta Warehouse Project and familiar events like Sundaze Metro and other outdoor events are on the way. If you don’t want to be engulfed by the heat wave, many club events are available to choose from. If Hip Hop and RnB is more your thing, Red Square’s regular Wednesday night event with its changing themes is an option. Quality House music which is always performed by local and international DJ’s over at Immigrant is great for a change of musical scenery. After Kelly Clarkson’s performance on stage, PitBull is set to take Jakarta’s Hip Hoppers by storm and you can also catch the performance of DJ Neil Pierce, the ace of Soulful House, at Indochine. Take a glance at What’s On for the schedule of coming events in Jakarta for the next coming fortnight. Jakarta is getting Hot! Summer is Coming !. Jakarta selalu ‘panas’ !. Ali Budi

DJ Yousef
R
elentlessly playing sets worldwide has given this DJ, remixer and producer a musical taste both mature & broad, twisting electronica with house, vocals with techno and life experience with time in the studio. His ‘Circus’ parties in Liverpool have become infamous for their outstanding acid house party line-ups and his debut album release was well received last year. The Beat got some Q & A time before he took to the decks at Buddha Bar... 028 | beatmag.com
c. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemi You’ve certainly managed to build an electronic empire of allsorts for yourself. From Djing and promoting to remixing and producing, you obviously take music more seriously than many easy spinners out there. Was music ingrained into your growth as a child? Any experience with instruments or orchestration prior to the electronic world? I was surrounded by pop music and some early hip hop when I was very young. I was heavily into breakdance and hip hop culture as well and in the early 80's, new wave artists like the Human League and Spandau Ballet. I’ve never had any musical training (sadly) but I do have some sort of ear for harmonics. There are plenty of people out there giving reflections on your sounds or reviews on your releases; how would you define your own sound?
sent me. I tested them out together and they seemed to work together well. I asked Derrick if I could use it, he was more than happy, and after some editing the track came to life. It ended up being called one of the best tracks of 2009 in DMC Update magazine. Is there a particular moment you look back on where a turning point allowed you to take your career in music to the next level? It’s a cliché but every day I am striving to find another moment to progress. Some moments stand out, like my first gig at Pacha for Renaissance, my Radio One residency, all my gigs at Space Ibiza for Coxy, Circus being made UK club of the year, getting signed to Cocoon, Radio One’s 500th Essential Mix party at Circus this weekend; it’s all madness but it’s all down to hard work and determination.
My sound is influenced from music in general, from pop to hard techno, hip hop to classical. My sound as a DJ is house and techno, good quality, good energy, sitting in the realms of the underground but bright enough for the big main rooms. You released your first full length album ‘A Collection of Scars & Situations’ last year; how long was this in the making? Does it contain a collection of ideas you’ve been playing with over the course of your career or more of a project that took shape in the studio as you were recording it? It was never a planned project. I'd been working on many tracks and realized I had about 20 or so tracks made and some were far from house or techno. I was developing as a producer and an artist with tracks like ‘A Moment of Clarity" and ‘Birthday Thoughts’. As I wanted the world to know I was a capable producer I decided to release my album on my own label, it did very well too! Tell us about your collaboration with Derrick Carter on the track ‘Legacy’; how did you first come to start knowing and working with Derrick? I’ve been a fan of Derrick’s for many years. He played Circus' first birthday and we have been friends ever since. When I made the backing track I was really happy with it and then I stumbled across a vocal Derrick had

Summer Concerts in May By Erza S.T.
G
oing into summer time in Jakarta, I am happy to inform all of you that we can really enjoy some high quality classical music performances, both local and international, during this month. Let’s begin with Adela Martin – one of the renowned pianists in the world. This Spanish-origin pianist has pretty much marked her career throughout various recitals, concerts, music festivals and recordings. Adela Martin began to study piano at the age of six. She studied at the Conservatory of Zaragoza until she obtained a Professional Degree at the surprisingly young age of 17. She then continued her studies with Nati Cubells in Barcelona and with another prestigious concert pianist, Eulalia Solé, at the Music Conservatory in Badalona. She is currently teaching at the Pablo Sarasate Conservatory in Pamplona, a job that she combines with recitals in Spain and abroad. As a pianist who is also a composer, Adela Martin’s goal is to spread music made by Spanish composers, especially those from the 20th Century, that have a great musical richness and variety. For her upcoming concert in Jakarta under title of “El Soplo del Recuerdo”, she will perform quite an interesting program from Isaac Albeniz, Defin Colome and Joaquin Rodrigo aside from her own composition. As for those of you who can’t stand recitals, then perhaps you will find Paragita Student Choir of Universitas Indonesia upcoming concert more soothing. As you might realize, we are celebrating the romantic composer Robert Schumann’s 200th birth anniversary this year and to commemorate this special occasion, this famous choir have organized a special concert called “Memoirs of Schumann”.
050 | beatmag.com
The choir is known for its singing quality and the challenging repertoires that they choose to perform at every concert. Under the direction of famous Indonesian soprano diva, Aning Katamsi, Paragita Student Choir of Universitas Indonesia will perform all Schumann compositions from solo, duets and choir, to pieces dedicated to the male or female choir only. It is definitely a must for all Schumann lovers out there. This month of May offers a little bit for everyone from solo recitals and choir performances as well as orchestra performances. Nusantara Symphony Orchestra is back for their second concert in 2010, focusing on classic compositions such as “Polonaise” from Tchaikovsky’s famous opera “Eugene Onegin” as well as Schubert’s “Symphony No. 3 in D” and Dvorak’s cheerful but rarely performed “Symphony No. 8 in G”. With such a long history back to the late Yazeed Djamin era and under the name of Nusantara Chamber Orchestra, they have evolved and become one of the best orchestras in Indonesia. Under the baton of Japanese conductor Hikotaro Yazaki, I am sure that this performance will be able to fulfill your classical music hunger in Jakarta. Who said that Jakarta isn’t cultural? “I
Not until after he landed in Syria was DJ Yousef informed of the historical status he was about to achieve by stepping behind the decks in its Damascus nightclub, Jet Set. He shares his story with The Beat…
’m the what...?” I say loudly, to the local promoter I’ve just met at the airport. I’ve just been swept quickly through customs in VIP style, and now the sentiment settles in; Yousef will be Syria’s first international DJ. It’s quite a shock (almost to the point where I could

justify referring to myself in the third person) and although I was aware of the political situation here, and Syria’s traditions, I didn’t comprehend its distinct lack of international talent gracing the land. As far as I know, it’s the only Arab state to retain this policy, and in a planet that all too frequently seems to have shown a tremendous
feature nous for throwing dance music in the most unlikely of situations, I’m surprised somewhere still exists untouched by the all enveloping reach of rave. The news also fills me with a feeling poised midway between exhilaration and stress. Stereotypical images of a politically torn country ravaging any hopes of a rave flood my mind, whilst I ponder an image of a club based on an amalgamation of “that scene in Blade” and “5am at a mosque” – fear and excitement swiftly follow. I wake 5 hours later after a reasonable sleep and try to get online, which I do. I make a proud announcement that tonight I’m to be the first international DJ to play in Syria. I hit Facebook, AOL AIM and my own club night Circus’ message board. The responses come in thick and fast: “Well done, nice achievement, go Yousef, wear a bullet proof vest, Marco V never came because of death threats” - you know, the usual banter and well wishing that would greet the achievement. Marco V’s recent cancellation – with the same promoter, according to 365 magazine – was due to the death threats he received on his own message board. I concur that I will be making exactly the same choice too if my lines of communication receive the same treatment, but I’m yet to yield it. But there’s not enough time to check every facet of the information super highway, who knows how high the bounty may be on my head?!? Later I’m picked up by Muhammad and taken to the top of Qassyoon Mountain for a glimpse of the surrounding areas and a bite to eat. En route the drivers all drive like their wives are about to give birth on the back seat and they’ve downed a bottle of Dom in pre-celebration. With tightly gripped hope I hold on to my seat and clutch my seat belt (the only person in the car wearing one). We dodge though the insane traffic at speed, yet even at this pace I find it easy to spot the countless machine gun wielding military police on every street corner. “They are the reason Syria is so safe” explains Muhammad, whilst failing to see the irony that the drivers are wilfully going against that mantra. Though it only dawns on me later on in the hotel room; I’m too busy gawping with fear at their antics as they continue to treat our lives with gleeful disdain. At the top of the aforementioned mountain a local magazine has come to meet us, looking to grab the scoop on myself and my Syrian predicament. The interview is littered with the usual questions;
“..the drivers all drive like their wives are about to give birth on the back seat and they’ve downed a bottle of Dom in pre-celebration.” my favourite place to play, do you love Syria and do I have a message for “my fans” (of which I was building steadily from the promoter, driver, and journo outwards – not bad for 8 hours in a country). I happily answered all the questions and closed with one of my own - “what happened with Marco V?” At this point Muhammad steps in, suggesting the threats were from rival promoters trying to flummox the gig and that by the time they’d come in, it was too late for Marco to be persuaded otherwise. Still unable to see all the internet comments, I casually ponder the potential price on my head… Later on during lunch, conversation slips to my own promoting: could I help the Syrian scene personally by fronting a festival? I politely point out that maybe with myself being the first DJ to play here, perhaps things are running a little too slowly for that just yet. But it’s a nice thought, and with Muhammad enthusing about over ten years of experience promoting, I’m hesitantly optimistic. We drive back to the hotel, throughout more dangerous traffic, heavily armed police and even past a UN range rover searching for a parking

feature space in this busy to bursting city. It sure contrasts with the comparative ‘wildness’ of Ibiza.
I smile and split directly to my bed: my immersion in the Syrian scene is over for tonight.
Next is the sound check, and despite a decade of working in the business there’s no monitor in the booth, and although quickly remedied I’m fearing for the worst. The fears are dumbfounded; the sound is great considering the small size of the club and the fact that I’m in a dingy drinking hole in Damascus. Its 7.45pm, 15 minutes before the club opens, a further five hours before my set and a whopping 12 before we shut, yet there’s a healthy stream of people starting to come in. For some, it’s shaping up to be a long ass night…
A few hours later and it’s time to fly back to London, but not before another dice with death. For some reason, haste seems to be a more attractive proposition for my driver than safety and my life seems more in the balance now than at the hands of any internet threats, idle or otherwise. The queues for the airport are catastrophic; Muhammad kindly slips one of the guards a few Syrian pounds and I get ushered through.
My pick up time of 12.30 comes, and goes...I’m told that I need to wait for more people to arrive – as “the locals don’t think I’m coming”. It transpires that 500 angry locals were waiting for Marco to show up and seem less than convinced I will. Eventually at 1am I go downstairs to the lobby, eager to keep my low profile, where I’m met by local TV, radio and press to document the arrival of something new for Syria – not what I had in mind but I’m happy to do a few live interviews – I’m then followed (in a reality TV show style) to the club. In the club, the music is loud and the room is half full. I start immediately by grabbing a mic and introducing myself with thanks. The crowd appear appreciative and so I crack on. I keep the music upbeat and energetic, slipping between the new Prins Thomas remix of Luke Soloman to my own techno fuelled ‘Letter to No One’, and judging by the whoops, claps and cheers it seems to be going well. 90 minutes pass by and the crowd seem a little less receptive to electronic music, I’ve had a few local girls asking me for ‘songs’, and the response to Paul Woolford’s glorious remake of ‘The Sun in My Eyes’ followed by Serge Santiago’s equally exceptional remix of ‘Blind’ is lukewarm. One of the girls returns to explain she meant Arabic vocals and Arabic music. Ahh... After two hours it becomes clear that ‘Jet Set’ in the heart of new Damascus is not exactly ready for my sound, or it would seem, the sound of electronic music at all. A breakers troupe arrive and I’m asked for hip-hop, it’s a request I’d love to comply with but sadly, am unable. At this stage the proceeding DJ arrives, following directly on. I expect local music, or hip hop, yet “DJ Undertaker” stops my track and drops in the hardest, most aggressive trance cut known to man. The remaining crowd parts like the Red Sea.

Eventually I find the BMI check-in desk and am relieved to find the flight is not only direct but I’m also eligible for an upgrade. The sweat that had glistened on my forehead as I clung for life, pirouetting ferociously through traffic, somehow disappears as a wary smile envelops my face. It’s at this point that I ponder on the experience I’ve just had. I’m certainly glad to be part of history, to find a corner of the earth still unexposed completely to the nuances of modern dance music and play my role in bringing it somewhere yet to experience it properly. Even the near deaths (ahem...), musical mishaps and the feeling of not really being ‘got’ can’t dull the moment. Whilst I’d be lying if I said the gig was enjoyable, the whole trip was certainly an experience. And that surely is what DJing, and for that matter, what life full stop, is all about. [Yousef]

THE KEMBALI DATANG, BERDENDANG & MENANG
A
Agak berbeda dengan fenomena come back yang coba dilakoni The Flowers. Paling tidak jika menyimak sambutan hangat publik terhadap album kedua mereka bertajuk Still Alive and Well serta konser yang sukses besar pada pertengahan April lalu di Score!. sepertinya Dewi Fortuna konstan bersikap cukup ramah kepada ‘Njet (biduan), Boris (gitar), Leo (bas), Eugen (sax), dan Dado (drum). Benar, bahkan sejak sebelum album ke-2 dirilis, hype telah solid terbangun. Orang-orang ternyata tawakal menunggu hingga 10 tahun sejak album perdana, Tujuh Belas Tahun Ke Atas, diluncurkan.

True, The Flowers are still alive and well worth waiting for!
One pretty big local music outfit from the early 90s, The Flowers, have regrouped with two of their original members: Njet (vocals) and Boris (guitar) plus Leo, Eugen and Dado. After releasing their debut album Tujuh Belas Tahun Ke Atas almost a decade ago—and succesfully attracting the attention of a young crowd with their Tolong Bu Dokter anthem—they made their comeback with their newest album ‘Still Alive and Well’, which was met with a good response, not to mention full-house concerts. Come and witness for yourself their energetic live gig on May 1st at Fame Station, Bandung, and on May 7th at Rolling Stone Live Venue.

J

Belum lagi lighting berkekuatan 150.000 watt pula sound betenaga 30.000 watt. Berikut jadwal masing-masing kota: Medan – JW Marriot (30 April), Bandung - Hilton (7 Mei), Semarang – Gemaya Tower (21 Mei), Jakarta – The Ritz-Carlton Pacific Place (11 Juni), Surabaya – Grand City Convention Center (18 Juni). “Ada sekitar 20an lagu yang digarap. Dan tantangannya kali ini juga luar biasa karena lagulagu itu adalah anthem dan sudah sangat popular dan coba kita crossoverkan”, ujar EQ Puradiredja, sang music director, memberi sekeping bocoran tentang Urban Jazz Crossover termutakhir ini. Yes, it’s about time to Jazz yourself up! [RUDOLF DETHU] Even if you’re not into Jazz—because of the complicated factor et al.—you may soon appreciate this musical genre better than ever before. Check out this yearly program presented by Dji Sam Soe called ‘Urban Jazz Crossover’ where they “innovate” popular songs and mix them with some splashes of Jazz to make them more earfriendly and more enjoyable for a wider audience in general. For this 3rd year of Urban Jazz Crossover, the performers are Indra Lesmana, Achmad Albar, Ello, Sandhy Sondoro, Dewi Sandra, Kikan Cokelat, Ipang BIP and more. azbar, the restaurant tucked away in a shady corner of Mega Kuningan, does sound a bit like something out of The Clash’s 80s single, but instead of a Middle Eastern vibe and verses, you get a British sports pub instead. The place is divided into three main areas: the downstair bar, the back lounge area and the sports bar upstairs, complete with authentic, slightly worn-looking decor with a wooden bar that takes up a major part of the room; an extensive selection of beers; sports paraphernalia and comfortable wooden seating and flooring, true to the traditional English pub style.

Going Down
The Hood
O
h yeah, we’re taking it down to the streets. This week, my lovely food buddies (now down to four from seven, because the other three opted to stay at home to preserve their complexions and abandon the idea of a street food adventure, which ultimately requires us to eat under the strikingly hot Jakarta sun) decided to strip off their pashminas and put on lighter cotton shirts and a pair of sandal jepit (thongs).
066 | beatmag.com
As predicted, our food adventure turned into a crazy foodie photo hunt, where the four of us snapped pictures left and right with reckless abandon to show you the incredible variety of street foods Jakarta has to offer. It is indeed a food heaven (if you don’t mind a little sweat and dust); a delightful “Shangri-la” of push carts, stalls or basket meals, served quickly with no fuss and available day and night for breakfast, lunch or dinner - where
the close proximity of customers and vendors (most of the time just an arm’s length), provides the sort of camaraderie that brings comfortable familiarity. The types of food are delightfully varied, from a simple meatball soup (endearingly referred to as Bakso – very popular in every city of Indonesia) to more complicated ethnic cuisines such as Gudeg (a sweet dish that originated from Central Java), Satay (grilled skewered chicken/beef served with the very delicious peanut sauce, or, if it comes from Padang, a spicy hot sauce), Mie and Nasi Goreng (fried noodles and rice), a variety of Soto (soup dishes) from many parts of Indonesia (Soto Madura from East Java, Soto Betawi from Jakarta, Soto Bandung from West Java, Coto Makassar from South Sulawesi) and many more. Despite the sweat, dust and several question marks over the standard of hygiene, our street food adventure proved to be all sweet and incredibly satisfactory. Surely there are many street delicacies out there we have yet to discover, but some have already made it to our list of top street foods: Satay Sambas - a little strip full of satay vendors
located in Jalan Sambas; Satay Padang Ajo Ramon on Jalan Cikajang South Jakarta; Soto Betawi on Tanah Abang near the West Tebet market; Nasi Uduk Kebon Kacang (mini serving of coconut cooked rice served with a variety of fried side dishes such as chicken (and its insides), shrimp, tofu, tempe and spicy peanut sauce) on Kebon Kacang Central Jakarta and Gado-Gado (mixed vegetables with peanut sauce) on Jalan Cemara. So, get out there, throw caution to the wind and begin your street culinary adventure. [text & photo: fonnyta amran]

L
osers who find a weird time machine, psychics on the loose, a slasher in our nightmares and a bounty hunter on the rebound – this is definitely the time for troubled guys to have all the fun – sometimes lovely, sometimes bloody!
Romantic Comedy. Director: Andy Tennant. Writer: Sarah Thorp. Cast: Gerard Butler, Jennifer Aniston. Do we really need to listen to those critics who bashed ‘The Bounty Hunter’ cold-bloodedly, when the names Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston are on the poster? This romantic-comedy about a bounty hunter who lands “the best job ever” – to catch his ex-wife who’s linked to a murder case – has promised us a lot of hilarious scenes in its trailer. However, if the trailer is funnier than the movie itself, please remember, you have been warned! Catch the ‘The Bounty Hunter’ in Blitz Megaplex (www.blitzmegaplex.com) and 21 Cineplex (www.21cineplex.com).
Comedy, War. Director: Grant Heslov. Cast: George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey. In a movie with its cast forged in Heaven, Ewan McGregor plays reporter Bob Wilton, who meets Lyn Cassidy (George Clooney) when researching the ultimate war story. Cassidy claims to be part of a legion of ‘Warrior Monks’ with psychic powers enabling him to read the enemy’s minds, walk through solid walls, and bizarrely, to kill goats just by staring at them. Jeff Bridges takes the part of the hippy legion commander and Kevin Spacey adopts the role of ‘the bad guy’. A quirky comedy for those with an alternative sense of humor. Only in Blitz Megaplex. www.blitzmegaplex.com.

Horror. Director: Samuel Bayer. Writers: Wesley Strick, Eric Heisserer. Cast: Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz. There are only two important names in the remake of classic horror, ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ – producer Michael Bay and slasher Freddy Krueger. You know the rules of the game: Freddy will chase you through your nightmares and won’t stop ‘til he ends your life; so don’t you ever fall asleep! This bunch of super-hot youths from Elm Street struggle to keep their eyes open to avoid waking up in hell. A movie that will most definitely keep you awake. Schedule at www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com.
Comedy, Sci-Fi. Director: Steve Pink. Writers: Josh Heald, Sean Anders, John Morris. Cast: John Cusack, Clark Duke, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Crispin Glover. John Cusack found his way inside John Malkovich’s head once, and now, he and three buddies, all down on their luck, get drunk in a ski resort hot tub, wake up and find themselves in the year 1986. The four seize the chance to improve their pasts and change their futures. One finds a new love, one becomes a real man among the ladies, one redefines his sex appeal and the other fights for his mere existence. If you had fun in ‘The Hangover’, expect some louder blasts from the past in ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’. Playing exclusively in www.blitzmegaplex.com.

Sixteen D-Scale,
“We Are Going XXXL” the Flagship Store Reopening
S
ixteenD-Scale presented their new collection with their brand new flagship store situated in the middle of Paris Van Java Mall, Bandung’s bustling centre market last weekend. The store, now literally two times bigger, with a practical modern design, giving it the warehouse in a store look was inspired by their consumers, who desired the simplicity of choosing their products and incorporating seemingly contemptible and practical design into their product placement. It has a very physical-industrial-hands-on feel to it.
The event started with the unveiling of the store with a two storey high denim curtains pulled by the sides, imitation of a sort-of Broadway show. Passersby flowed into the store served with entertainment by DJ’s; Glen, Cayenne, AditRNRM, Egga, Marah and live music by White Shoes and Couples Company and Sir Dandy. With a free flow of beer, merlot, sushi and a cheeky 50-pound slab of ice made custom for vodka shots. The store was filled with capacity customers all night.
Zara MAP at
Fashion Week
By Hanzky – Editor of www. fashionesedaily.com Style & Beauty with Attitude
M
itra Adi Perkasa (MAP) held a series of fashion shows last month in Grand Indonesia Shopping Town. The fashion week was intended to exhibit the Spring/Summer 2010 collections from various brands held under the company, and if I’m not mistaken, this was the first time that MAP has held such an event. Fashion shows are usually reserved for those in the know: the fashion industry, the media - but this one was held in the atrium where the mall visitors and brand enthusiasts could watch it together. It really was a great way to grab everyone’s attention, especially when there was an opportunity to do a bit of celeb-spotting. People in the fashion industry tend not to be phased by people in the media spotlight, but many of us ‘regular’ people are. So even though the initial reason for passers-by to stop and watch was to see Maia perform, they still took in a dose of fashion by checking out what she was wearing from head to toe, while making a mental note to find it in the store afterwards. From the fashion shows, customers can also learn about the
themes of the collections. They can easily visualize what to wear with a certain item. Fashion shows like this excite customers and make them want to shop, too - the proof was in the pudding, when the store became packed once the show was over. On to the Zara collection: it looks like they have two main themes this season. The first is cowboyinspired, where maxi dresses, denim, suede messenger bags (with fringes, no less) and boots dominate the look. The second look is possibly even more tempting. If you’re a fan of navy blue, or of clothes with a sailing theme, this is the collection for you. Personally, I loved it, so I didn’t know if I should be screaming with joy or worrying about the damage it might cause to my bank account. All I knew was I loved everything: the colors (blues, whites, reds), the stripes, the professional but nautical mood and the versatility of everything… *sigh* When is their sale season again?

The exhibition is being officiated by the Indonesian Minister of Public Works, Ir. Djoko Kirmanto, Dipl. HE from April 29 2010. This talented and interesting man is indeed a colorful addition to the Indonesian art scene. The ‘Spirit Of Work’ Exhibition is open for viewing until 28th May at The Ritz Carlton Jakarta, Lingkar Mega Kuningan Kav. E.1.1 No.1 Jakarta.

TYPIFYING [text & photos: fonnyta amran]
that of artistic representation.” The exhibition held in dgalleri at Plaza Indonesia, titled ‘Typifying’, speaks about this very idea. Rizki A Zaelani, the art critic and curator of this exhibition explained that the underlying idea of ‘Typifying’ is to invite the varied expressions of mimesis to be presented and show how an artist adapts and responds to their surroundings, and therefore makes up his/her existence. The correlation between the progressive development of modern society and perception of art is fascinatingly conveyed by the participating artists: Banung Grahita, Budi Adi Nugroho, Kiki Rizki Soetisna Putri, Theo Frids Marulita Hutabarat and Wastuwidyawan - who all projected their personal observations into their respective mediums, to reveal their own realities. Banung Grahita, in his works titled ‘Self Reflections’, appears to reveal his version of urban modernism; the sophisticated, brand savvy, 21st century consumer. While Budi Nugroho presents modern animation icons such as Astro Boy, Marge Simpson and Snowy the dog from the TinTin comic as the objects of his sculpture. In a way, Budi is showing his kind of reality - the everyday occurences he allows to shape his understanding of his existence. Kiki Rizky Soetrisna, using the creative mediums of oil, acrylic and polyester yarn, has painted what seems to be an analysis or observation of his surroundings in his works titled ‘Kindergaten Series’. Theo Frids Marulita Hutabarat and Wastuwidyawan Paramaputra use gripping and slightly disturbing everyday phenomena, which in effect, unwrap the slightly somber reality to us, the viewers.
In
the tradition of art, the relationship between art and imitation is the primary concern in the examination of the creative process. Michele Puetz, from the University of Chicago, explained in 2002 that “within the western traditions of aesthetic thoughts, the concept of imitation and mimesis have been central in the attempt to theorize the artistic expression. In most cases, mimesis is defined as having two primary meanings - that of imitation (more specifically, the imitation of nature as object, phenomena, or process) and
Observing each artist’s respective works, I can’t help but wonder whether the understanding of mimesis would ultimately lead to a question of originality, introducing the idea that every action or reaction, in relation to our own experience, is none other than a recycling method. Is there any originality left in the world, or have we been left with a series of imitations?
Typifying - a group exhibition, open for viewing until 7th April at dgallerie, Plaza Indonesia 1st Floor, Unit E 10- 11, Jakarta.

Happily (N)ever After “In the twenty-two years of my life, I have become many figures. I am Alice, Red Riding Hood, The Deer, Timun Mas, Srikandi and also Snow White and Cleopatra.” - Amalia Kartika Sari, artist. Indeed, Amalia is our modern day fairytale heroine. Her works in solo exhibition ‘Happily (N)ever After’ in KIAS gallery, Kemang, are her subtle defiance towards the sugary endings in the traditional plots of fairy tales. She questions the morality of the good and the bad, as well as happy endings, and immerses the hard-hitting reality of real life stories in her work, which are usually filled with disappointment, anger and pain. However, Amalia isn’t a cynic; she is a realistic individual raised in the modern era, where love stories come in a rather complicated package. As Asmudjo Jono Irianto, the curator of Amalia’s first Fine Art solo exhibition eloquently expressed, Amalia’s works “do not merely represent her personal history, but also reflect her intense artistic urge”. This is apparent in her detailed strokes that fill every inch of the canvas. No empty space is allowed as all sections are packed with images and details. And she doesn’t stop there. Amalia refuses to play within the boundary of the canvas, allowing her artistry to spill outside and into the frames, symbolizing her reluctance
080 | beatmag.com
to work within the boundaries of the traditional fairytale. Her frames have their own stories and demand equal attention. For example, in her work ‘Loro Jongrang’ the multicolored, stainless steel frame seems to expand and spread around interactively as if conversing with the painting and makes up a whole new intricately stunning wall installation. Through her painting works, Amalia wishes to remind us that we can create our own fairytale. Her perceptive point of view can be seen in “Little Red Riding What?” where she turns the tables and disguises herself as the wolf. In ‘Lie, Pinocchio, Lie’ she cleverly portrays the tendency to lie in any relationship – after all, some truths are best left unsaid. In ‘Srikandi & Arjuna: Love Hunts, Love Hurts’, Amalia portrays Srikandi, holding the Cupid’s arrow, subtly suggesting that a woman should take control over her own fate. In short, Amalia’s works, although carried out in a fun and cartoon-like manner, are very observant and demand contemplation of their onlookers. ‘Happily (N)ever After’ – A Fine Arts Solo Exhibition by Amalia Kartika Sari, is open for viewing until 6th May, at Kemang Icon Art Space (KIAS), Jl. Kemang Raya no. 1 Jakarta. Tel (021) 7180719.
Give To Charity by Taking In Some Culture
Y
ou can help raise funds for a range of good causes in Indonesia this month, by heading to the Ken Pattern charity art exhibition at the Hotel Gran Melia, Jakarta. The exhibition has been organized by the Canadian Women’s Association and supports various Indonesian charities that are sponsored by the Association and the Hotel Gran Melia’s ‘Community Involvement’ program. The CWA and Ken Pattern have worked alongside one another on this annual exhibition for several years now, and funds have been used - amongst other things - to support orphanages, offer educational funding, nutritional education, health clinics and family planning, to give assistance to the handicapped and disabled, and to set up a small library.
Ken Pattern is a well-known Canadian artist, whose work has long been inspired by Indonesia. Intricately detailed stone lithographs and paintings offer the viewer Pattern’s unique interpretation of Jakarta and other area of South East Asia also. His art, which has received critical acclaim, has been exhibited in North America, Europe and Asia and can be found in many private and public collections. This exhibition features recent paintings in which he explores his long-time concern for the environment. Also included are exquisitely detailed pencil drawings portraying nature’s power, based on recent visits to Siem Reap, as well as earlier works.
The exhibition is open now, every day, from 11am-8pm until May 22nd at Jakarta’s Gran Melia Hotel.

feature Local Spotlight Taking a closer look at some talented individuals in our midst. This week...
Igo Blado Now one of Bali’s indie music icons, a producer and gig master, Igo is well known for his role in the local music industry. The Beat took some time out for a topical chat... So Igo, at what point in your life did you first fall in love with music? Since the day my older brother played me that Tom Sawyer track, ‘Rush’. I was in 5th grade at school. Since then I regularly bought one album or compilation cassette every single week – one that had been recommended in the media – to fulfill my curiosity in music. I also started to play musical instruments at high school, performing on stage etc.
090 | beatmag.com
Tell us about your two companies, ‘The Blado Showbiz’ and ‘The Blado Beatsmith’… Blado (formed from the words ‘black’ and ‘dog’) was my dog’s name. I have gone by this name myself since 2006, which was the year I produced the band Devalli’s album called ‘Kisah Lalu’, a compilation CD called ‘The Skipped Tracks’ and a video compilatiaon as well titled ‘Video Kami’. Then in 2007, I developed The Blado Showbiz, which is concerned with events management and execution. It is mainly involved with the local indie movement. We have held 80 gigs to date. Meanwhile, The Blado Beatsmith is focusing on the minor-label movement to help produce local talents. Under the Blado Beatsmith flag, 7 albums have been produced already: The Skipped Tracks, Video Kami, Devalli ‘Kisah Lalu’, De Buntu ‘Fun The Mental’, Moshpit Mavericks, Ed Eddy & Residivis ‘Lagu Kita Orang Indonesia’, and Dialog Dini Hari ‘Beranda Taman Hati’. This last album became a success by working with a distribution label called De Majors in Jakarta.
feature Indonesian artists were well appreciated at the Junk Awards 09 at Pixel Media Asia [South East nonmainstream music awards]. Salute! [ http://sites.junkonline.net/junksounds/ ] You’ve also had your own band Telephone on the scene since 2003 in which you’re on rhythm guitar and vocals, how are things going with you guys? Telephone is still struggling to get out from the ‘Episode Koma’ (previous album) era, but will do in a vehicle that you’ll find out about soon.
“On Indonesia’s
You seem to be very concerned with the music movement generally and the indie scene in particular. What led you to take on this mission? Firstly, I set foot into the music scene and now I can’t turn back to anything else. I’ve tried a few times to hang up my guitar and to give myself a break, but it never lasts that long. In any other position or role I have had, I always come back to this. Secondly, I have zero doubt about the local indie musicians’ quality and talent. They are very good. It’s just those classic problems that get in the way: money and distribution. The musicians are all well connected with each other anyway. Three things for a mantra, that will change the music scene? Honesty, belief, and being responsible. That’s it. It’s not always about creative artworks, but we do have to appreciate each other’s art as well. So what’s your perspective on the movement of the music scene in Bali? Is it on the way up or down? 2009 was a pretty sad year. In Bali itself, the number of albums actually released was pretty low. The aim of the band is sometimes just to survive. Regeneration doesn’t work anymore. Not many bands really ‘come up to the surface’. On Indonesia’s mainstream music map it seems that everyone is drowning in similarity. But thankfully,
mainstream music map it seems that everyone is drowning in similarity.” We’ve heard some fuzz about ‘Supersonik’ being the new album for Telephone, can you spill some beans? Yes. We are currently putting together ‘Supersonic’ as a vehicle for us to explore new freedom with our music. As far out and fast as we can. The album will be our 4th album, and our 2nd self-produced album. If aliens suddenly took over and forbid music on earth, what would Igo do? I’d recommend they listen to the Alien Ant Farm CD. Sometimes music is an answer of the heart, do you agree? I agree. Because music is prayer. What’s in store for 2010 for Igo Blado? Besides the ultra ambition for Supersonic, Igo Blado will be putting in the maximum effort needed to move forward. Producing a television program? Music? Whatever it is, Igo Blado will stay true in it!

To close the show, all the guest stars took to the stage to sing the event’s theme song titled ‘Krisis Air’ (Water Crisis), leaving the crowd with a hardhitting message. Founded by Emmy-winning producer Kevin Wall in partnership with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Live Earth is a succession of non for profit events worldwide built upon the belief that ‘entertainment has the power to transcend social and cultural barriers to move the world community to action’. You will be led to your table, seated, draped with a crisp white cloth napkin then presented with a HUGE selection of choice.Whilst mulling over the menu, you can’t help but notice how lavish your dining environment is. There’s a warm, stylish ambience here, created by fantastic lighting, beautifully set wooden tables, a very contemporary and chic bar area and huge plush sofas that form an ideal area to chill with your friends pre or post-dining with a drink – if it hasn’t been snatched up by another lucky group of customers already. The décor here screams ‘style’, and believe me, is a sign of good things to come.
From the main menu, choose from an array of tastebud-tempting anti-pastas (starters). We sampled the Carpaccio di Manzo con Rucola (55K); juicy wafer-thin beef on rucola salad leaves, perfectly accentuated by slivers of cheese. For your second course, try some traditional pizza, cooked in Sorriso’s genuine Italian pizza oven. On the menu from 7th May is new pizza, Ciccio Condito (65K); this pizza is a healthier option and looks and tastes so fresh. Dressed rucola salad leaves, diced fresh tomatoes and cubes of Bocconcini cheese (from the Italian word, meaning ‘small mouthfuls’) sit on top of the trademark, thin and crispy, stone-baked base. Of course, with any Italian meal, some form of pasta is a must. Sorriso’s Strozza Preti Marinara (55K) consists of beautiful homemade pasta, a mixture of seafood including tasty prawns, clams and tender rings of squid, with slices of zucchini. If pizza or pasta isn’t for you, there is a whole range of other Italian ‘secondi piattis’, including the Cernia all ‘Acqua Pazza (45K). This dish is a melt-in-your-mouth fillet of snapper, poached in a hot broth of seasoned wine vinegar and cherry tomatoes.
Speaking of drinks, choose from your typical selection, including wine, or try something from the vast cocktail list. We loved the 70K ‘Flirtini’ – a cool concoction of raspberry vodka (yum), triple sec, lime, pineapple and cranberry juices, topped off with sparkling wine (yum again). And amazingly, if you get here between 5pm and 8pm, you can get this - along with all other cocktails and spirits - with a whopping 50% off. Whilst nibbling on the complimentary hors d’oeuvres, we continued to peruse the menu – there really is that much choice. There is a separate Asian Flavours menu, with prices ranging from 18K-39K, along with the extensive Italian
The icing on the cake for us was a delectable dessert: the Chocolate Profiteroles (25K) were oozing with a thick vanilla and tangy lemon cream filling, and smothered in a rich chocolate sauce. In the style of Facebook, we ‘like’. There’s no need to travel to Sorrento. Just hit Bali’s own Sorriso. beatmag.com | 095

Ö
zlem was first on stage at Anantara’s SOS as the bar was once again brought to life as a live music venue last week. Breaking the air with a vocal presence that floated between Pink’s delivery and the melodic rap of early Gwen Stefani, her band in tow were a tight backline that kept the sound punchy and equipped with enough rock to balance out the pop.
P
eaches herself left a dramatic pause and plenty of chanting on the crowded floor before she was led to the stage in what appeared to be the hide of a yeti, just one of the many costumes to be continually downsized throughout the length of her show. Pooling together the energy of a full band, she had no trouble keeping the audience’s sweat on tap as she growled out provocative lyrics over the top of her electro-clash backing mixes. Tracks like ‘Talk To Me’ kicked the set off and career spinners such as ‘F#ck the Pain Away’ capped it off in style before some encore time. Another night proving that Bali is thirsty for more live acts and when a venue is willing to get them in, the appreciation shows…

ith six albums under their belt, band Five Minutes had plenty of material to take on tour and a show at Blue Eyes gave the Bali fans a chance to hear them live. Plenty of action on around town may have caused the numbers to be down, but for those who made it there was plenty of singing along to tracks like ‘Salah Apa’, ‘Aku Patut Bertahan’, ‘SKSJ’ and their classic hit ‘Selamat Tinggal’.
