S

Menonton video panas milik sang bintang ?.

A

ll eyes have been fixed on the TV screen lately. Watching a certain celebrity’s scandalous video perhaps? Nah, we’re talking about the World Cup fever currently gripping.. errm.. the world. Like a magnet, the competition has attracted millions of football fans over the years and continues to grow in popularity. Alongside football, people also rely on live entertainment for good times. I Love Monday is back in the limelight at HRC, and could be well the best option for a pleasurable hectic Monday, with big names and local talent featuring on the night. Happily then, Jakarta has a heap of places where you can combine both, and watch your favorite striker while getting entertained by music from DJs or Live Bands. Don’t forget to record your victory celebrations on your video phone to show all your mates just how much you love live music and live footy!

It’s Singing Time

By Erza S.T. For several months now, Jakarta has been dominated mostly by recitals or orchestra concert performances. It’s great, but we miss hearing singing performances on our classical music scene. Fortunately, towards the end of June we will be lucky enough to finally have this addressed. All sorts of vocalists from beginners to professionals will show us their talent and performances on stage. The Archipelago Singers are one of our local talents. Formed in early 2008 by a group of people with a great interest and admiration for choral music, The Archipelago Singers frequently perform choral music at various occasions and concerts. Although they are new as a choir, The Archipelago Singers have members from other prominent Indonesian choirs who have won scores of both international and national choir competitions. They formed with an aim to preserve the world’s classical choir music, which requires singing skills, and to introduce Indonesian choral music that includes compositions inspired by Indonesia’s rich and priceless traditional

048 | beatmag.com

culture. To make choral music “entertaining”, The Archipelago Singers often perform widely known popular songs transformed into unique choral compositions. Conducted by Nindya Tri Harbanu, who graduated from the University of Augsburg in Germany, The Archipelago Singers will have their upcoming performance ‘A Chain of Chants’ at Erasmus Huis on June 22nd 2010, with classical sacred a-cappella choral compositions and popular music on their program. From the junior group, we check out an upcoming performance by top Indonesian classical singers who are known both locally and internationally. Aning Katamsi (Soprano), Binu Sukaman (Soprano), and Adelaide Simbolon Simanjuntak (pianist) are our pride and joy on the Indonesian classical music scene, and together with a few musicians from the younger generation such as Christine Tambunan (soprano), Daniel Christianto (baritone) and Cecilia Ratna (pianist), will perform a concert focusing on Indonesian art songs as the main theme. “Perjalanan Tembang Puitik Indonesia oleh Dua Generasi” or ‘The Journey of Indonesian Art Songs by Two Generations’ will be performed at Bentara Budaya on this upcoming June 17th, showcasing various famous Indonesian art song compositions such as ‘Awan’ (Cloud) and ‘Bagi Kekasih’ (To My Dear) by Binsar Sitompul or Trisutji Kamal’s famous cycles: ‘Siklus Perjuangan’ (The Struggle Cycle) and ‘Siklus In Memoriam’ (In Memoriam Cycle) as well as other compositions by FX Sutopo, Tony Prabowo, Ananda Sukarlan, Iskandar and Fero Aldiansya Stefanus. Make sure to get your front row ticket, as this is the kind of concert that only happens once in a blue moon. Speaking of Ananda Sukarlan, this coming 24th and 25th June, he will celebrate his five year artistic collaboration with famous choreographer Chendra Panatan at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. Part of the Gedung Kesenian Jakarta “Jakarta Anniversary Festival VIII – 2010” program, Ananda and Chendra will perform highlights of their best collaborations so far. A few audience favourites such as ‘You Had Me at Hello’, David del Puerto’s “Alio Modo”, and ‘Rapsodia Nusantara no. 4’ to the phenomenal ‘Humiliation of Drupadi’ will be performed on this two night concert. A stellar cast of guest stars including pianist Elwin Hendrijanto, excellent flutist Metta F. Ariono, talented 14 year old violinist Inez Raharjo and dancers from the Jakarta Ballet choreographed by Chendra Panatan are lining up to participate in this must-see concert. Unfortunately, for this concert Ananda will only focus on his music and his collaboration

with Chendra – meaning that there will be no singing at this concert. Nevertheless, this is still a great concert that is surely not to be missed. For classical music lovers, I am also happy to announce that our young talent is now starting to receive more recognition and appreciation from a wider public audience. On the Trans TV program ‘Indonesia Mencari Bakat’, or Indonesia Looks for Talent, there are three contestants that represent classical music. Lius Firdaus (tenor) from Jakarta made it to the final 13 before getting eliminated, leaving Putri Ayu (soprano) from Medan, and the great pianist duo Janice and Ryan from Surabaya to continue their journey on this show in the final 12. I personally hope that one of them at least can make it to the big three, and prove to Indonesia that we do have great classical music talent. Enjoy the show people!

T

Digagas pertama kali oleh Edwin Syarif alias Edwin Cokelat (gitar) serta Kirana Hamonangan a.k.a. Marcell Siahaan (drum). Entah memang takdir kelompok all stars memang sedemikian rupa, walau relatif miskin gembargembor, eksistensi band bentukan Oktober 2008 ini relatif mudah menggaet atensi publik. Namanya jadi salah satu pembicaraan paling hangat di skena musik Indonesia. Kabar paling anyar, mereka sedang berkutat menggarap album perdana.

Arogan: lagu ke-Aku-an paling egois. Liriknya perintah dan dikte, dengerin gue, jalankan perintah gue. I Want It All: Ini lagu egois bagian ke-2.

Fokus dan profesionalisme, that’s the point! Kalau musiknya? ...hmm, it’s all about trend.

Konspirasi have taken the Indonesian music scene—especially in big cities—by storm. Consisting of famous artists such as Edwin Cokelat, Marcell Siahaan (both are the founders), Che Cupumanik and Romy Sophiaan, they are now in the studio working on their debut album, scheduled to be released this year. ika jeli diperhatikan, tampaknya grup-grup musik lokal papan atas—lebih tepatnya: sempat menikmati posisi puncak di era sebelumnya—satu demi satu mencoba meraih kembali simpati publik lewat penerbitan album baru.

If

you happen to be into Indonesia’s music scene, you would have noticed that big name local bands – or more precisely: big name local bands of their era are trying to rekindle their old flame by releasing new albums and hopefully winning the public’s attention. For an example, /rif are currently busy in the studio working on their new album. Same goes for Sheila On 7, a Power Pop Rock group hailing from Yogyakarta, who have traversed the Indonesian music scene–gaining the merit of being called a “a million copy band” – have recently come out of the woodwork to get back together and work on a new album. Even though their latest album – according to Sony Music Indonesia – is not yet scheduled to be released for another 3 months, yet the news of their new album has leaked far and wide. Since 26 May 2010, the latest single of the band which was formed back in 1996, titled “Hari Bersamanya” was officially released for radio, gaining a lot of airplay from around the archipelago. The strategy of releasing a single first, lately followed by a full album, was concocted by vocalist Akhdiyat Duta Modjo, or simply known as Duta, explains, “ Now is the time of single releases. So we followed the

industry. Still targeting on the release of a full album, because the release of a full album is our responsibility as artists to complete a body of work and also a form of appreciation to the SheilaGank (Sheila On 7 fans) who have always supported us. Regarding their latest single, which is more on the light and mellow side, Eros Candra (Guitar) states, “This Sheila On 7’s most Sheila On 7 song.” Evidently, listening to this single, you are warped back in time: to an era where the iconic Sheila On 7 sound first came about. Whereas, according to Eros, the concept of “back to their roots” was not planned, but came out unintentionally. Eros began by playing his Guitar note-by-note; Adam Muhammad Subarkah (bass) and Brian Kresna Putro (drum) played their portions on a full set (not as a combo which was common practice in their earlier album “Menentukan Arah”). How the music was going to turn out was unimaginable to them. Everything seemed to flow according to each member’s moods. While waiting for Sheila On 7’s ninth album to be released, you can catch their performance at Pekan Raya Jakarta on the 18th of June.

Push Cart Buffet Heaven

064 | beatmag.com

Lesehan Mari Kangen, Parking lot of Commonwealth bank

Jl. Kemang Raya no: 6, Jakarta Selatan.

Located on an nondescript site beside the popular Le Codefin- Kemang, sits an Indonesian buffet heaven. With four tables that seat around 16 people, the push cart is ready to dish out 40 kinds of food. This is the commoner’s version of a lavish banquet, served in true Indonesian style.

I

went there the first time and was immediately amazed by the amount of food available from the small pushcart. I was grabbed instantly by pangs of hunger the second I laid eyes on the display of scrumptious looking food. Ease, speed, and not to mention great taste are all the key factors of a good fast food place, minus the saturated fat fiesta of deep-fried foods, cheese, and sweet carbonated drinks. Thankfully then, this cart consists of traditional Indonesian food rich in spices cooked with authentic homegrown techniques and ingredients, with a rich cultural influence behind each of the dishes. It’s a culinary mix up at its best: the Padang’s spicy and delicate rendang sauce being used to bathe neither chicken or beef as it normally would, but Jengkol - mildly toxic stinky beans, a favorite food in West Java and Sumatra. The slow-cooked cow’s feet in sweet soy sauce accompanied by sautéed paprika, garlic and onions is a Javanese favourite. Also be sure to check out the sautéed garlic and watercress – a popular Chinese vegetable dish.

located in Blok M Square. The place has been around for 10 years and is affectionately known as Lesehan ‘Ibu Gendut’ which serves more than 82 dishes, much bigger than its Kemang counterpart. Ibu Henny, the co-owner of the Kemang outlet said that they frequently serve up over 300 servings a night, an impressive number by any standards. With simple food and minimum overhead costs, the place is doing a roaring trade by providing an alternative for those who prefer to spend wisely whilst still hanging out in Kemang. Apart from its extensive menu and great authentic tastes, like many other traditional Indonesian eateries the prices are easy on the pocket. For example, one serving of rice with two main dishes and one vegetable will cost you around Rp15K. It opens between 5pm to midnight, so the place is great for people watching. With a view to the La Codefin Kemang (where the more hip kids hang out) you can people watch with ease and will never run out of interesting things to see.

This pushcart buffet in Kemang is apparently an Fonnyta Amran extension of its more substantial counterpart beatmag.com | 065

I’ve known Phillipe for quite some years and have learned that the Hard Rock philosophy features strongly in his style of running a kitchen. “I am a tough chef” he says, smiling “but I also am democratic. I believe that you need to put passion into everything you do, and do it right. When it comes to cooking specs, I’m really tough, but I also believe in my people - their talents and their ideas. I am a strong believer of esprit de corp. I think it is what can make or break a kitchen.”

Most things I learned in life, I learned from Hard Rock. I know that this sounds surreal, but it’s true. Just for Fun

T

Tapi, baik “Toy Story 3”, “Jonah Hex”, maupun “Knight and Day” memang tidak menjanjikan tontonan serius, melainkan “lucu-lucuan” saja. Jadwal lengkapnya ada di www.blitzmegaplex.com.

T

here are three new upcoming movies for the next fortnight; from the family flick “Toy Story 3”, through supernatural cowboys in “Jonah Hex” to action Comedy “Knight and Day”. Scheduling available at www.blitzmegaplex.com.

Toy Story 3 Animation / Family / Comedy. Director: Lee Unkrich. Writer: Michael Arndt. Cast: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Michael Keaton, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty, Timothy Dalton. Ayo, mulai mengantri! “Toy Story 3” promises nothing huge, nothing extraordinary – and that’s a good thing. (Look how traumatized we were after “Shrek: Forever After” and its overreaching plot!) The boy-toys – Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. (and Mrs.) Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Rex, and the gang – are transferred to a daycare centre because their owner Andy has to leave for college. There, they meet Barbie and her ‘boyfriend’ Ken, Lotso the Pink Bear, and Mr. Pricklepants, and together they plan to escape.

Jonah Hex Action / Drama / Thriller. Director: Jimmy Hayward. Writers: Mark Neveldine, Bryan Taylor. Cast: Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich. No Country for Old Man”.

‘Jonah Hex’ promises nothing new, and sticks to the usual tale of retribution. The fun lies in the mixing of ‘Van Helsing’ and ‘The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly’. In this case, it’s the ugly (scarred Jonah Hex), the hottie (skimpy Megan Fox), and the uglier (big bad John Malkovich). Jonah Hex was an outlaw, and a bounty hunter. After having a near-death experience, he gained some kind of supernatural power. The government offers him a job that is right up his street: to stop the terrorist who scarred his face in order to cleanse his own criminal records.

KnightandDay Action, Comedy. Director: James Mangold. Writer: Patrick O’Neill. Cast: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Dano. Apalagi, sutradara James Mangold tidak punya sederet prestasi berjudul “Girl, Interrupted”, “Identity”, “Walk the Line”, dan “3:10 to Yuma”.

‘Knight and Day’ delivers nothing more than a bad pun and beautiful faces on the big screen: namely those of Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard, and the talented Paul Dano. The scenery matches these heavenly creatures too – from Salzburg (Austria), to Andalucia (Spain), and Port Antonio (Jamaica). Diaz meets Cruise by chance, then gets tangled up into a global plot involving deadly assassins, car chases, and heavy weapons. That’s the story – and let’s not give a damn about it. It’s all just for fun! Get all the schedule in www.blitzmegaplex.com

Max Mara and the Urban Women

Max

Mara presented their Spring/ Summer 2010 collection early last month that strongly emanated the feeling of femininity. The collection depicted a strong image of grown-up women with an urban style. We were treated to hues such as olive and khaki as well as the basic cream, not to mention some hints of silver, bronze and antique gold punctuating this collection.

076 | beatmag.com

This time around, the design house has stuck to their dedicated formula of delivering style for glamorous chic women, with pieces that look dynamic yet practical for daywear. Detailing such as zippers, laces and features adorning trench coats as well as cargo pants can be found in this collection. However, it’s not too much, and the collection still maintains its classic status. What I remember the most about this collection were a few pretty-looking drapey pieces, matching shirts and pants that look perfect for daywear, and pencil skirts that will never lose the magic to transform a women’s figure into something beautiful. The prints are done beautifully and still maintain their elegance to look effortlessly chic. Amalia, Editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & beauty with attitude.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream A

few weeks ago, Fashionese Daily and TBJ editors were invited by Make Up For Ever to get to know the latest addition to their Aqua series. As you probably know, Make Up For Ever (MUFE) has a few products under the Aqua brand, which features products that are long lasting and waterproof. The most famous one, which also happens to be my favorite, is their pearly waterproof eyeliner pencil called Aqua Eyes. Now they are introducing cream eyeshadows, available in 22 striking colors, called Aqua Cream. Aqua Cream combines the highest-quality pigments with mother of pearl particles to give an immediate rich color payoff with a luminous finish in just one application. Its long-lasting formulation will not crease or smudge, even under the most extreme conditions, and its creamy and elastic texture allows for easy blending. Some of the shades can also be used on cheeks and lips. I applied some of the shades to my hand and I can honestly say that the claim is true. Aqua Cream is very pigmented and the payoff is really true to its color. Moreover, this stuff won’t budge (even after I rubbed my hand hard). I was also stunned

078 | beatmag.com

to see the demonstration of how waterproof Aqua Cream is during the event. MUFE invited a team of synchronized swimmers from Bandung to perform (which, if I may add was AWESOME), all of them having been made up using various shades of Aqua Cream. They swam and danced in and under water for a good 10 minutes, and when they stepped out, the makeup looked fresh without a trace of smudging. Amazing! Unfortunately, there were no samples given to the press so I couldn’t try it on my face and don’t know how well it blends. However, what I can tell you is that there are so many gorgeous shades to choose from, I think you’ll have to meditate for several hours to decide which ones you’re going to get. Unless of course you have an unlimited budget for makeup, so in that case, I’d suggest you go and grab them all! Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream will be available from retail counters this June and will retail for 265K. Affi- Editor of www.fashionesedaily. com – Style & beauty with attitude.

QUIKSILVER spreads its wings to the “paris of Java”

Q

uiksilver Indonesia celebrated the official opening and launch party of their latest store at the new Paris Van Java (PVJ) Mall recently on Friday, May 28th. The gig kicked off at 3pm with a demonstration by several of Indonesia’s top skateboard riders and BMX bikers on the mini ramp that was specially built to support the event in the heart of the PVJ atrium and as the sun went down the excitement began. Paul Hutson, CEO of Quiksilver SEA kicked off the evening’s entertainment with the official ribbon cutting ceremony, which was immediately followed up with a fashion show of the latest Summer 2010 collections by Quiksilver, Roxy and DC. It was standing room only in front of the shop as the crowd swayed to the music while enjoying the show. Free flow drinks and snacks kept everybody happy, as Dede Suryana (West Java’s biggest surfing hero)

signed 100’s of posters for his young and adult fans. Finally, the B-boys battle dancers closed off the show with some amazing moves. Paul Hutson stated, “Bandung is well known as the ‘Paris of Java’ worldwide. Many of Indonesia’s top designers, models and actors come from this beautiful city, and Quiksilver is excited about the new Quiksilver, Roxy and DC product offerings for this store and its trend setting market. We have specially selected products from our global ranges and in particular styles from our European, USA and Australian ranges. Categories include apparel and accessories ranging from jeans, t-shirts, walkshorts and hooded sweatshirts for Bandung’s cooler climate, as well as a full range of accessories such as handbags, travel bags and back packs. With direct flights now arriving from Bali and Kuala Lumpur, this store is sure to take off with the new tourist arrivals...”

REBIRTH

he Bob “Sick” Yudhita Solo Exhibition in Srisasanti Art House which opened on May 26th is titled “Bobvarium”. The title is a combination of the artist’s name - Bob - and “ovary” (the female reproductive organ) which when put together represents the artist’s creative process and rebirth. It seems suitably fitting then that Bob’s birthday falls on the same day as the opening. The exhibition is also to mark the beginning of Bob Sick’s new image, from the tattoo-covered scary looking artist, to a more fashionable and accessible artist. Fery Oktanio, the curator, wrote in a letter to Bob (which also serves as a prologue in the exhibition catalog), that he felt Bob’s works tended to be misunderstood, and I have to agree with this particular statement. I admit that I may be one of those who takes a little longer to comprehend his works as they may be too far advanced for my palate. The bold and outrageous strokes, the seemingly sloppy paint-dripped traces, and a painting approach that looks busy, crowded, almost careless as well as child-like, leave me a little flummoxed. They are blatant, over the top and slightly disturbing. But again, my flailing

limited layman’s opinion may serve as a validation of the artist’s uniqueness, as being misunderstood is often the case in great arts. But I don’t think he cares, really. He made that clear when he said “I’ve never thought anything when it comes to my paintings. I just sketch it. These hands are innocent”. Bob appears to paint what he feels, ignoring the perceived aesthetics which can be restricting for an artist. He pours everything from his mind onto the canvas. He does not seem to care about structured concept or logic, and prefers to submit to his instinct, painting everything from humans, animals and strange creatures to God. Suwarno Wisetrotomo, an art critic described Bob as “an artist who has his own world and does not seek ideas from outside, and plays with his spontaneous inner restlessness”. His solo exhibition in Srisasanti arthouse is a tribute to his uniqueness as well as a birthday gift from his art peers. Come and witness the rebirth celebration of Bob Sick as an elegant, interactive and truly unique contemporary artist. Bob “Sick” Yudhita’s Solo Exhibition is available for viewing until June 26, 2010 in Srisasanti Art House, Jl, Kemang Raya no 81, Jakarta Selatan.

his year’s Beat Party kicked off with the Beat Awards 2010 being presented in the restaurant area of Oceans 27. It was then onto the beach stage for a band and DJ jam out. There were some heavy delays thanks to early rain and a bass drum being destroyed in the first live set, but the bands played on thanks to the patience of The S.I.G.I.T and NAIF before taking their live energy to the stage. Fashion shows and lazer dancers filled the gaps before DJ Dade closed the show. A big thanks to all of the sponsors for their support.

REVIEW

Sitting On Top of the World…at RGW. Tosca takes a trip back to Anantara, this time to sample the über-cool delights of the Rooftop Grill and Wine restaurant...

094 | beatmag.com

Anantara’s rooftop restaurant RGW (Rooftop Grill & Wine), may demand the excessive use of a thesaurus for this fortnight’s food review, because at the risk of sounding like a simpleton the only word I can think of right now is ‘cool’. Clearly I’m going to have to do much better than that to convey the multitude of delights that this place has to offer, so… here goes. On the fourth floor rooftop of five star Anantara resort, you will step out of the elevator into the popular SOS bar. Walking across the wooden floors, past the incredibly professional and efficient staff and the huge bar with its funky blue lighting, you’ll find yourself on top of the world, looking out of a long, open-fronted room at the beautiful Seminyak sunset as the oranges, pinks and occasional purples of the sky streak across the horizon. The remaining rays of light catch the water below and sparkle, creating

Snacks are also available to accompany your cocktails such as a satay combo (Angus beef, jumbo prawns and chicken) presented on a mini charcoal burner (85K) and seasoned potato wedges with sour cream and sweet chili dip (40K). On the subject of cocktails, good luck choosing one – or any drink for that matter – as the choice is truly vast. In addition to the snack menu, RGW also boasts a full ‘Spanish Sensations’ tapas menu. Inspired by the food of Spanish chef Ferran Adrian, who has three Michelin stars under his belt, this section of the menu allows customers to select a two or three course option for 480K++ and 540K++ respectively. In the short time RGW has been open, the atmosphere, music and exotic menu offers much for those seeking quality dining with an ambience to match and with such a great bar area, you’ll find it hard to head anywhere else once your meal has been imbibed.

a truly magical image. Sloping glass ceilings, huge mirrors and ‘infinity pool’ style water features at the very edge of the rooftop create the illusion that you are surrounded by sky and sea. The appreciation of style here is acknowledged by the Fashion TV channel, which is showing silently on the big screen. Waves breaking on the sand below punctuate the sound of animated chatter and the chilled, funky, sunset grooves coming from the speakers. A mixture of clientele is in at this time. Some in designer shades who have flocked in from the beach below to relax on the huge red beds for sunset cocktails and snacks, and some people who have made it home to shower and change in time for a full evening of wining and dining at RGW and SOS. Primarily a grill restaurant, the choices for a main course meal consist mostly of either grilled seafood or meat and being lucky enough to sample one of the most extravagant selections from the menu (the fillet mignon center cut @260K), it was hard to decline. This lean and naturally tender cut is simply flavored, not overpowering the flavors of the meat and being cooked to your liking adds to the magnificence of the meal. beatmag.com | 095
