Digitalism

Blowfish Friday 2 July 10pm

Sound Like Electronica, Indie Hail From Germany

Have Been Digitalism is a duo consisting of Jens Moelle and Ismail Tuefekci, who both hail from Hamburg. They first met at a record store where they found a shared passion for Dance and Rock music. Luckily enough their first chance to showcase their musical passion on stage was offered by the owner of the record store at which they met. Many Rock bands are known for creating beats for the dance floor, yet Digitalism does the opposite, by creating rocking rhythms from Electronic music. In previous years, the duo has remixed songs for bands such as The Klaxons, The Test Icicles, Cut Copy, and The Futureheads.

Have Been Digitalism adalah Jens Moelle dan Ismail Tuefekci asal Hamburg. Beberapa tahun belakangan, mereka meremix lagu dari band seperti The Klaxons, The Test Icicles, Cut Copy, dan The Futureheads.

Are Now Blowfish is set to bring the Jens and Ismail duo to their stage on the 2nd of July. For those of you who want to rock on the dance floor, get yourselves down there and get your rock groove on.

Dimitri From Paris

Dragonfly Saturday 3 July 10 PM

Sounds Like Lounge, Electronica, House, Downtempo Hails From Istanbul, Turkey.

Has Been ‘Dimitri from Paris’ doesn’t actually mean Dimitri originated from Paris. Born Dimitris Yerasimos in the year 1963 in the city of Istanbul, Turkey, he moved to Paris at an early age. As he was growing up in Paris, funk music and disco from the 70s inspired him and these rhythms are what he combines with electro and hip-hop beats, which he eventually discovered in the 80s. Using a ‘cut and paste’ method to extract certain sounds from disco, he is able to combine these elements into a mix tape feel. Starting his musical career as a radio presenter, in 1996 Dimitri ventured into the realm of producing and released the album ‘Sacrebleu’ under the label Yellow Productions, which combined elements of jazz, film music, samba and house. After successfully completing the project ‘A Night at The Playboy Mansion’, he was immediately picked up by music label Defected, elevating Dimitri From Paris to worldwide acclaim.

Setelah berhasil menyelesaikan proyek “A Night at The Playboy Mansion”, dia segera bergabung dengan label Defected, sehingga nama Dimitri From Paris terkenal diseantero dunia.

is Now Come the 3rd of July, Dimitri from Paris will perform at Dragonfly at an event in conjunction with Johnnie Walker. Dimitri is set to share the DJ booth along resident DJs Aay and Joyo.

Cut Copy

Bengkel Nightpark Saturday 10 July 9 PM

Have Been Cut Copy are a synthpop band hailing from Melbourne, Australia. The term ‘synthpop’ is derived from the new wave rhythms of the 80s. This synthpop/postpunk band began as a side project of DJ Dan Whitford, who is also a working graphic designer. Dan released the single ‘1981’ before he recruited the rest of the members Tim Hoey, Mitchell Scott and Bennet Foddy in 2003 (the band’s current lineup is now minus Foddy). With time, the group’s sound has expanded to feature elements of scuzzy disco, electric rock, and space pop which can all be heard on their latest album ‘Bright Like Neon Love’. Are Now With a huge following in Oz and plenty of international attention, Cut Copy are set to perform live in Jakarta. The event will be presented by Ismaya Live, with opening local talents Agrikulture and Rock n Roll Mafia. Come the 10th of July, Bengkel will be rocking to an array of retro-modern electronic sounds, funk, synth and 80s new wave beats.

FINDING CLASSICAL FINDING CLASSICAL RECITALS RECITAL

in the Summer Season In Summer

S

Robert Schumann

By Erza S.T. Time flies so fast and we have arrived in the month of July again. As usual, most people go traveling in July for their summer holiday, and this year will be no exception. Nevertheless, for those who have decided to stay in Jakarta and endure the current weird weather, we have a recital that just might cheer you up. It is not an easy task to search for upcoming performances in July, as most of the music schools or music institutes are rather reluctant to do anything during the summer break. Luckily, an organization called Studio Musicasa have decided to fill the void, and are planning an art song recital this coming July 3rd, at GoetheHaus Institute.

048 | beatmag.com

‘Vortragsabend 5’ is the title of the concert and means ‘an evening of music in English’. This tradition comes from Europe (Germany), and dates back to the 1800s, when musicians and music lovers gathered at someone’s residence to enjoy a singing performance. It was usually held in the drawing room or music room, which gave an intimate yet relaxing ambiance, with around 20 to 30 invitees. Most of the time the composer himself would accompany the singers on either harpsichord, clavichord or piano (in more modern times). In present times, these kinds of musical compositions are referred to as “art songs”, known in German as ‘Lieder’. There are many great composers from France and Italy who have composed art songs, however the German art songs are unique and are an important contribution to classical music literature. This year, we celebrate the 200 year anniversary of the famous art songs of composer Robert Schumann. During this concert some of his famous compositions such as ‘Myrthen cycle’, ‘Liderkreis op. 39’, and ‘Belsatzar’ will be featured, as well as some renowned duets.

Hugo Wolf

Other famous art song composers who are celebrating anniversaries include Austrian Hugo Wolf (150 years), and British composer Samuel Barber (100 years). Thus, some of the famous compositions from Hugo Wolf such as ‘Moerike Lieder’, ‘Goethe Lieder’, ‘Spanische and Italienische Liderbuch’, and Samuel Barber’s short opera ‘A Hand of Bridge’ will be part of the program as well as some solo vocal numbers. Without a doubt, this concert will surely enlighten your rainy summer season in Jakarta, and bring back a bit of inspiration. Not only will you be entertained, but you will also have the opportunity to witness an array of Indonesia’s new and young talents singing and playing the piano. Around 32 musicians (singers and pianists) with different vocal characteristics and skills will participate in this recital. For Lieder aficionados, this is surely an event that you won’t want to miss.

Samuel Barber

Vortragsabend 5 3 July 2010 starts from 19.00 GoetheHaus Institute For more information: Fang Fang 0816 117 5029

3 tahun setelah meluncurkan tembang eklektik nan fenomenal bertajuk Kroncong Protol dari album Unity yang notabene sanggup merekonstruksi perspektif anak muda terhadap musik Keroncong, lalu mengorganisir sendiri pertunjukan penghormatan untuk sang maestro Keroncong yang baru saja wafat, “Tribute to Gesang, pada 16 Juni silam di Bentara Budaya, Jakarta; kini Bondan Prakoso menggebrak lagi dengan album paling mutakhirnya: For All. 054 | beatmag.com

M

feature

Rezpect! [RUDOLF DETHU]

The Prince of Crossover, Bondan Prakoso, backed up by his hop-hop unit, Fade 2 Black, is back again with their newest release after 3 years - the last one was Unity - released in 2007. Consisting of 11 songs with ‘Ya Sudahlah’ as the hit single, Bondan & Co. still are as eclectic as they’ve ever been. Although they don’t really include any traditional Indonesian music apart from the phenomenal song, ‘Kroncong Protol’ from in their previous album, they still go plenty wild, embracing Ska/Reggae in ‘Tetap Semangat’, Everly Brother-esque Pop in ‘Tidurlah’, and Funk and Soul in ‘Good Times’, not to mention the use of their amazing human beat box skills here and there on a few tracks. In this album Bondan is not just the bass player, rather the multi-tasking band man, lead vocalist, producer and arranger. But he still gives his colleagues in F2B; Titz, Santoz, and Lezzano some space to improvise. Bondan lets them choose and interpret a few songs so they can do it their way. Lezzano goes alternative funk-ish in ‘Bumi ke Langit’, Santoz experiments with rap rock in ‘Terinjak Terhempas’, while Titz decides to stay cool by doing a Rock Ballad titled .Not With Me’. (He also sings beautifully here).

INTERNATIONAL CUISINE

GONE STREET S

treet food is and will always be an integral part of our food scene. In developed countries, street food is considered more a communitybased movement, but here in this densely populated city of Jakarta, street food is born out of necessity. The wide variety of traditional cuisines coupled with heavy migration from rural areas to Jakarta has made it a fertile ground for street vendors. My foodie buddies and me are self-professed lovers of street food.Who wouldn’t we be? It’s good, cheap, easily accessible and a great alternative for those who have neither the skill nor the time to cook. The great thing about living in Jakarta is that its residents are never short of these little push cart delights.

Street food varieties are usually restricted to traditional local food. We even covered some of them in our food adventure only a little while ago. This week, we thought we would continue on the street food adventure, with our eyes initially set on Kelapa Gading, the north Jakartan’s food paradise. However, this all changed when we passed by the Kemang area and discovered several cars waiting in front of a neon sign adorning a yellow pushcart with ‘Baba Kebab’ in red bold letters on it. Baba Kebab is situated in a rather quiet yet strategically located space in front of the BCA branch office in Kemang and opens only at night. Done in the doner kebab way, the food is served in a choice of large (9K) or regular (7K) portions with lots of lettuce, sautéed onions, slices of lamb, and plenty of mayonnaise, all wrapped in lightly grilled pita bread. The kebabs are hard to resist when you can smell the lamb cooking on the grill, and you can get one with cheese (10K) or without cheese (8K). Either way, the food is more than satisfactory and great grub after a night out. Now that we have international cuisine joining in with the street food party, we love it even more! Next on the adventure;Tacos! [Fonnyta Amran] beatmag.com | 063

Barcode

What does the newly refurbished Barcode have to offer its guests? TBJ got the chance to check out the new look and also try the latest cuisine offered on the menu.

From a functional standpoint, there have only been subtle changes here and there at the new Barcode. The central area, directly facing the stage is decorated with dark colored sofas and dim lighting to better accentuate the stage. The old selection of food outlets offering various types of nibbles are all gone, and in their place are cabanas big enough to seat 10 - 15 people. An island bar is set along the other side of the new Barcode along with a wine cellar and the big screen hasn’t moved from its original position. If the new design is to be judged by its comfort factor, Barcode is sure cozier than it was before. As all places offering food, the menu is the main point and Barcode has totally revamped its take

064 | beatmag.com

on dining. Before, Barcode had various separate outlets offering a variety of different foods, but now they have their own menu run by Barcode itself consisting of various Asian, European, and even African cuisines. Two new items available on the menu are African lamb and ayam penyet, which will only set you back Rp35K/portion. The portions are big to fill you up ready for a night of partying. On the lighter side of the food list, there is currently a promotion on easy bites such as crab meat sweet corn soup or dim sum, which can be combined with a beverage for one inclusive price. The vast wine collection is a new touch to Barcode. A selection of wines such as Tyrell’s Chardonnay

2008, South Island Pinot Noir 2007, Wombat Creek, Redbank Chardonay 2002 and many others can be sipped to your heart’s content. Drinks at Happy Hour prices are also available on Sundays from 4-6pm, and all night on Mondays where all beverages are half price. You can enjoy great food and drinks to match, accompanied by a soothing acoustic background to relax in after a busy day, but if you want to let your hair down head over to the club area where you can get down to the latest tunes spun out by the resident DJ. Whatever you choose, Barcode delivers.

Barcode Open : 4pm – 12am Weekday 4pm – 1am Weekend La Codefin Building Jl. Kemang Raya no. 8 021-718 2208

KICKING IT WITH FOOD The FIFA world cup season is here. It’s the time for football fans (or soccer whichever you are comfortable with) to be glued to their flat screen TVs and watch their favourite teams make it to the finals. Paul, my pseudo boyfriend, is no exception. Being a die-hard soccer fan, my time with him is being reduced quite significantly during this competition, and I’m forced to get familiar with “Can’t babe. I’m watching the game with the boys”.Ah yes, the doubleedged sword of a FIFA world cup. On one hand, I love that it has the power to make the Jakarta traffic a bit more bearable. On

066 | beatmag.com

the other hand, I have to deal with the fact that soccer games apparently trump pseudo girlfriend time. So, being a foodie who thinks food should always play a significant role on any occasion (watching sports included), I sent myself out on a quest to find the perfect grub for the boys. Here’s a little selection that supposedly goes well with the on-field activity...

Hard Rock Cafe Jumbo Combo; a delectable array of Hard Rock Cafe’s starters that are big enough to share. Includes Santa Fe spring rolls, hickory-smoked chicken wings, onion rings, potato skins and tupelo chicken tenders. Served with four different sauces for mixing and matching.

BBQ sauce and onions with provolone and cheddar cheeses on a cheddar crust. Whatever it is, one thing I’ve noticed: watching sports is a good time to crack out the starters and the entrees, but a bad time to dish out fancy amouche bouche and canapés, because apparently (according to Paul) it doesn’t go well with his testosterone charged appetite. As for beverages, any kind of bottled drinks (beers or carbonated beverages) are a great companion to wash down the food, but stay away from the fancy premium tea or coffee. What was that he said about this? Oh yeah, “Dude, we ain’t a bunch of grandmas”.

Hard Rock Cafe Nachos; fresh corn tortilla chips piled high with jack and cheddar cheeses and seasoned pinto beans. Served with sour cream, chopped green onions, pico de gallo, jalapeños and a side of fresh Hard Rock grilled salsa. Chow it down with beers or a HRC signature Cecil Ice T (if alcohol is not your beverage of choice). You’ll be good and ready to channel that testosterone What I also learned from this male-centric activity to scream and shout at the TV screen. is that there is something satisfying about sitting on Avenue Pizza Coney Island cheese fries; the couch and mindlessly chowing down French fries topped with mozzarella cheese, food while watching someone coupled with crispy and hot buffalo wings with else sweating and kicking at their peak physical efficiency. blue cheese sauce. Domino’s Pizza Memphis BBQ chicken [Fonnyta Amran] pizza; tender chicken breast,

Villians for Heroes

J

Heroes are defined by the villains. The badder the villains, the better the heroes will be. So, embrace this group of big screen bad guys – starting from the Genius Gru who aims to steal the moon from the sky, the humanoid Dren, and predators from an alien planet. Encounter them all at www.blitzmegaplex.com

Despicable Me Animation, Family. Director: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud. Writers: Ken Daurio, Sergio Pablos, Cinco Paul. Cast: Steve Carrell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Ken Jeong, Miranda Cosgrove, Elsie Fisher, Dana Gaier, Julie Andrews.

Berarti, “Despicable Me” pasti sudah dianggap berhasil. Our first villain is Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) who has stolen the great pyramids of Giza, the Las Vegas version of the Eiffel Tower, and now is planning to steal the moon. Yes, the one in the sky. Aided by a battalion of minions, Gru’s only problem is three orphaned girls who believe that he could be a good father to them. This hilarious premise is so well-executed by the directors and writers, that despite being far from household names they have already been picked as the team to make another movie, ‘The Lorax’. Check out the trailers of ‘Despicable Me’ on the Internet - you will be more than eager to see the movie!

Splice Horror, Sci-Fi. Director: Vincenzo Natali. Writers: Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant. Cast: Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac, Abigail Chu.

Our second villain is Dren (or “nerd” backwards) – at least that’s what the promotional poster for “Splice” suggests. Dren is the first-born of Clive Nikoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Cast (Sarah Polley), a pair of bio-genetic-DNA scientist types in a lab sponsored by a huge corporation. Dren is a creature born in this lab; the result of a forbidden experiment. Dren is a horror generated by the many flaws of mankind, spliced together, and delivers some serious revenge and punishment to the other protagonists. Director Vincenzo Natali who made the groundbreaking ‘Cube’ in 1997 promises that ‘Splice’ is a terrifying horror story that will shatter every single cell of your body. A must-see!

PREDATORS Action, Adventure. Director: Nimród Antal. Writers: Alex Litvak, Michael Finch. Cast: Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishburne. Our third villain is a gang of aliens from another planet. Adrien Brody – once again – is reluctantly sent to this planet to lead a gang of thugs against the villainous beings. These mercenaries, consisting of Yakuza, convicts, and death squad members have to face the Predators in a series of bloody encounters. That’s it, that’s the story. Lame? Judging by the previous sequels of ‘Predator’ (‘Predator 2’ and ‘Alien vs. Predator’) it could be, but since Robert Rodriguez is involved it could easily match the success of the original masterpiece. One thing is for sure, these predators will be much less kinder than those blue creatures from planet Pandora.

Flouro is Back! Jeffry Tan thinks so.

A

fter his somewhat provocative and critically acclaimed collection from last year, which raised many an eyebrow and helped to place his name amongst the best fashion designers in the country, Jeffry Tan’s much anticipated collection 2010, presented last week in front of his store in South Jakarta, showed that he had already taken his designs to the next level. Starting with an all black collection that had us confused with its direction and model choice, and appeared to be the backdrop for the main sponsor ‘Clear’, the show then went into hyperbol with an explosion of vibrant colors and floral designs. A mix of flouro and earthy tradiotional colors exploded onto the catwalk as his principal collection sashayed past Jakarta’s society and the fashionistas seated in the elegant outdoor setting. Color has definitely splashed its way back onto the scene with Tan’s array of powerful and functional pieces for both men and women.

Footwear Care S

ome shoes that were made using the finest quality leathers and materials need a little extra care and maintenance. However, these are the shoes that if you take good care of them will last you for a very long time. Think of these kinds of shoes as an investment, because when you invest in something, you usually have the tendency to watch over it.

To make your investment last longer, here are some tips to prolong the life of your shoes: Leather shoes: Remove dirt and dust from shoes after each use using a clean cloth. Let the shoes out from their storage once in a while to allow them to breathe fresh air so that the leather can breathe which prevents the shoes getting stinky. There are also shoe polishes especially made for leather shoes. Polishing them with such products will help prolong the life of your shoes. Metallic shoes: Shoes with a metallic finish are usually ruined faster because they have a foil finish which is laminated onto the leather upper. As time passes by, the foil will naturally crack or wear off with any abrasion. Fabric shoes: Usually shoes made from fabric get dirty much more easily, therefore you need to remove the excess dirt and dust as often as you can. Remove excess dirt using a foam fabric cleaner and leave them to dry naturally. That means no dryer near the shoes at all costs, or the fabric will separate from the leather upper much more easily because the glue that bonds the fabric and the upper will separate. Beaded or shoes with embellishment and appliqué: It’s only natural that shoes that have beads, crystals, gems and appliqué, as well as stitching will easily get damaged or lost (on some elements) if caught or snagged. Therefore you need to tread carefully and do not store them too closely with other shoes or any materials. Since these shoes are delicate in nature, it is only natural that you need to take extra good care when wearing and storing them. You should only really take these

kinds of shoes out once in a while during special events. Suede or nubuck shoes: As you’re all aware, these types of materials are very delicate and you should be wary of getting them wet because they will ruin easily. If they do get wet, don’t wash them - just let them dry naturally but not in front of any sort of heat or else they’ll get fried. To remove dirt from the surface of the shoes use a special suede brush or even your old toothbrush (making sure the brush is dry). Brush gently onto the surface of the shoes to remove the dirt. It is highly recommended to spray suede and nubuck shoes with waterproofing spray. Heel tips: The tip of your heels (the rubber part) often wears down quickly or falls away from the heels after excessive wear. Watch this part carefully because if the condition is already worn through, that means it’s about time for you to take your heels to the shoe repair shop and replace the heel tips. If you don’t replace them quick and keep wearing them they will start to damage the heel structure. Leather soles: Once the leather soles are worn in get a rubber sole to protect the base of your shoes and to lengthen the life of your shoes. the MOTION & EMOTION OF NOELLA ROOS text & photos: fonnyta amran

T

here is something calming and aesthetically meditative about viewing Noella Roos’ figure drawing artworks. Like most artists, she has learned that the human form is one of the most interesting and rewarding subjects an artist can paint, yet also one of the most difficult. It offers the opportunity to portray a variety of feelings through expression, and challenges the artist’s perspective and grasp of composition. The Noella Roos series of figure drawing artworks may look rather academical, but oh what a breath of fresh air they are. Finally, a series of artworks that focuses on aesthetic contents, strong techniques and meaningful lines; art that conveys simple beauty in the midst of chaotic messages around us. Art that stands purely as art. In the midst of the pouring trend of contemporary arts, this classical use of centric strokes and brushes is utterly refreshing. I found myself sighing in relief the minute I walked into the gallery. Frames and frames of charcoal sketches against white backgrounds exude so much clarity

and sophistication. Noelle Roos is obviously a very skilled artist who stands strongly by her traditional art training. She appears to gain inspiration from the big artists such as Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Kathe Kollwitz and many more. But she hasn’t stopped there. She brings a dynamic touch to each piece, sketching moving figures with vibrating expressive lines. They are strong, astute and without pretense. In the words of Chandra Johan, the curator of this exhibition, "Noella presents her narratives through body gestures, emphasizing lines in empty spaces and brings out rhythms of contour which on the whole seem to reflect certain restlessness." To me, this is simply art that inspires.

Noella Roos "Motion & Emotion" Solo Exhibition is open for viewing until July 10th 2010 at Cemara 6 Gallery, Jl. HOS Cokroaminoto no. 9-11 Jakarta. Tel (021) 391 1823

feature Local Spotlight Taking a closer look at some talented individuals in our midst. This week...

We’ve heard that you’ll be heading to Australia soon to work with a producer there, is this true? Yes I hope to arrive on the 25th of June, this Friday. I have been fortunate enough to have caught the interest of a couple of Sydney based producers and a few located in the states as well. I’m very excited about being invited to come and work with these amazing talents and the potential of it all. Robert Conley has had a number of hits with his latest being Brian McFadden’s latest number one “Just Say So” and Stuart Chritchley is responsible for a huge list of successful soloists and bands. I highly value and respect their individual talents and look forward to working with them. How did this Opportunity come about? On my last trip back from Sydney I was seated next to a man by the name of Peter Coquillard. We finally got on to the topic of music and it turned out Peter is a leading man at Nettwerk One Music, a publishing company that manages the copyrights of many artists including Sarah McLachlan and he’s also played a part in producing successful pop artists such as Madonna, Rhianna, Britney Spears and more. Peter suggested I get involved in an idea he was pursuing for a Songwriter Retreat in Bali… Songwriter Retreat? Peter was organizing a Professional Songwriter retreat to be attended by various invited professionals such as singers, song writers and record producers from Australia, USA, Japan

feature

and Sweden. The purpose of the retreat was to bring together this amazing group of professionals and have them write and record every day. The results were even better than anticipated by the organizers and they believe at least 3 big hits will come out of this first retreat. It will now become an annual or maybe even bi-annual event for Bali and even more famous names will be present on the next one, although it will be extremely exclusive and available by invitation only. So the camp ended up being a stepping stone for you? Peter had me on board as his PA, arranging equipment hire and the like. One of the activities we organized was a jam session at the Jazz Café in Ubud. I ended up getting up to sing for the first few songs and it was them that Robert and Stuart became interested in working with me. What are you hoping to achieve in Australia? I am hoping for professional recognition and a good name in the industry amongst respected artists, musicians, writers and producers. But the most valuable achievement I would wish for right now is the opportunity to make a decision during this phase about the best direction for me to take my music and personal style. Do you think there are more opportunities for success in the Australian Music industry? I’d be better able to answer this question when I return! If you don’t see me back here in the near future then you know the answer is ‘Yes’ BUT, I

will always return to Bali and I hope I’ll always be welcome on stages here too! Which country do you feel that your heart belongs? I was born and raised here in Bali and I know it inside out so without hesitation, Indonesia has my heart forever. What are your plans for your band in Bali? I will continue to work with the Freedom Jazz Band guys as much as I possibly can. They are such great musicians and such great people and I feel privileged and grateful to work with them. Define your music style in 3 words… Sexy, soulful, and comedic. I don’t like it if it’s too serious, I don’t know what to say when the atmosphere begins to grow colder so I just crack it out! I listen to a lot of soulful players like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, N.E.R.D. and such. Your name defines that Indo taste, but at play your sound is global. What’s the background? My dad came from Medan, Sumatra, while my Mom is from Sydney. I grew up in Bali and got this musical influence and singing talent from my dad. Do you play instruments yourself? Yes I play keys and guitar and I’m on a mission writing my own songs at the moment.

Mar apu Expressing their Freedom

W

ith a band name derived from the name of a Sumba cult, you can be sure these guys take their reggae infused brand of peace, love and freedom seriously. The Beat chatted to the boys after they hit the stage at Mannekepis…

So Marapu, what’s behind the name? Marapu is a cult, almost like a religion that began and grew in Sumba island, Timor. Just like reggae first expanded, coming from an island, then widening to larger states… Most of you guys come from the island of Sumba, but you ended up meeting in Jogjakarta, and you perform in other cities and islands around Indonesia. How does it feel? It’s like an adventure of our own from which many stories begin, being in a band together and playing gigs across geographical boundaries and such. It would never happen without the music. It’s the element that unites us all and brought us freedom in expression. I heard you rocked the show at Sumba to a crowd of thousands; tell us about it… We hit three spots in Sumba, the first one gathered 25,000 people, the second spot broke over 10,000 and the last one held 40,000. Amazing. Maybe it’s because they sense that we’re those ‘local boys’ playing in the hood. Plus we had already sold the album on the island. Bob Marley obviously gets plenty of air time, but who do you listen to for reggae influences besides papa Bob? We often listen to names like Alfa Blondie, Big Mountain, Oyaba, Ziggy Marley, and a little bit of UB40. Are there a lot of reggae bands from Jogjakarta? When we started out around ’99, a few existed, about five bands. But now as time grows along with the music the scene is quite big. There are about 40 bands or more in the city and we’re a part of the IRC (Indonesian Reggae Club) mission in the country. How have you made it through to this stage of your band journey? We hustle to build Marapu with consistency, patience, and everything else just comes along the way.

092 | beatmag.com

Tell us about the making of Marapu’s newest album “Peace Love & Freedom”. We put six songs on from our previous album, and five new fresh songs. It’s all about peace, love, and the state of freedom from a universal perspective. There’s also a strong element of pop in the album, what’s the mission? As we know, there is roots and party reggae to take part in. Marapu is standing in both lines. Marapu style; define peace, love and freedom? Peace, it’s for everyone to have. Love is who we are. Freedom is what we’re doing, freedom of expression. Rastafarian religion is a subjective view of life from Jamaica. How do you combine it with Indonesian culture? We can’t adopt all the elements of Rastafarian culture. For example the original songs from that culture tell a lot about craving for a country’s freedom, while our country got freedom ages ago. So we decide to just believe in the art form, and play the music… Any rituals before stepping out onto the stage? Pray, and shout together! You’ve played a stack of gigs in Bali this week, how has it been? Fantastic. Once again amazing. At first we felt the challenge was big, but once we hit the stage, the crowds were so sweet. We thank them all for accepting us nicely! Marapu shout out? Let’s raise our banner higher for reggae. Keep your fire on! Marapu are: Feryanto - Vocals, Diyan and Beny - Guitars, Iwan - drums, Dondho - Bass, Khoebischo Percussion, Neloz - Keyboard. Contact them at marapu.band@yahoo.com

food review

Blue Blue Fin Fin Japanese Fusion and Lounge.

aficionado of all things japanese, the beat’s dan ashcroft took a trip south to check out blue fin restaurant and indulge in a spot of late lunch - fusion style.

094 | beatmag.com

P

art of the ever increasing amount of quality restaurants and eateries that have opened in the re-emerging South Kuta/Tuban area, Blue Fin has tailored it’s concept of ‘semi-fine dining’ to the hordes of visitors to Bali who want to enjoy their dining experiences without too much pomp and ceremony. Although a huge hit with the Russian market, since 2004 Blue Fin has been welcoming all comers to its contemporary, modern-styled restaurant – serving up a blend of Japanese fusion cuisine.

Strolling in through the large glass doors, I leave behind a busy Kuta afternoon and enter a relaxed, calming enclave with plenty of seating options, depending on how sociable you’re feeling. All dark colours and glass panels bathed in blue light, diners can choose from the front lounge room with a view outside onto the street or go for a more intimate setting at one of the tables tucked away behind the wine cellar. A focal point to the restaurant in itself, the stylish glass-walled cellar allows viewing of the large selection of old world, new world, and local wines. I pull up a chair in front of the Sushi preparation counter and have a chinwag with Head Chef Pak Sugi – formerly of Jakarta eatery Akashaka Mas fame. Three years at Blue Fin and he has fleshed out a menu that is as impressive as it is inventive. I advise anyone to arrive early to allow themselves a bit of extra time to go over the huge array of choices on offer, from sushi and sashimi, to soups, mains, sweets and everything in between. A particular speciality at Blue Fin are the Rotabayaki specials - tender skewers of beef, chicken or fish dipped in sauce and barbequed over a char grill. There is also a teppan grill, located in the front area of the restaurant allowing diners to watch their favourite meats getting the teppanyaki treatment. Thankfully my lunchtime treats have been prerecommended by Chef Sugi, so getting lost in the menu is not necessary and instead I have a bit of time to soak up the surroundings before the food arrives. Ignoring the little voice that’s urging me to liberate one of the Merlots from the cellar I go for the sensible option and order up an iced tea. Blue Fin boasts a drinks menu that has every occasion covered from classic cocktails including martinis, shakers and digestifs for after-meal and afterhours fun, to fruity blended juices, refreshers and icy mixes for kids and hungover journos waiting till dark before popping another cork. Signature cocktails include the sushi groove and Blue Fin mojito, and alongside the standard domestic beers, there is a selection of international beers like San Miguel, Corona and, of course, Asahi. Don’t forget to check out the imported range of sake & sochu for a true Japanese experience. My Blue Fin degustation experience kicks of with one of their more popular starters – the crispy prawn salad (35K++). Fresh from Jimbaran, they are battered, deep-fried, bathed in a tangy sauce, and finally scattered atop fresh lettuce leaves. Incredibly morish with a pleasing crispy texture and

zesty dressing, it’s chopsticks at the ready and be prepared to share. Next up comes the interestingly titled ‘orange blossom’ (95K++). A standout offering from the rolls section of the menu, it’s a great twist on a traditional dish involving salmon, cheese, asparagus and orange roe wrapped in nori seaweed with a deep fried crispy crust. Laid on a bed of thinly sliced salad with a mound of nori flakes in the middle it works as a starter to share or as a great addition to a grazing style meal. The final main event is the Wagyu cheese roll (275K++). Three tender slices of prime Australian Wagyu beef are rolled around clutches of long, thin enoki mushrooms and cheese with a light gravy drizzled on top, and accompanied by a shredded side salad. The beef is impossibly tender – even more so than the mushroom stalks – and the sauce perfectly complements the cheese rolled within. My palate fully sated, I pass up the option of dessert (chocolate cake with cashew nut semifreddo anyone?), snap a few shots of the menu on the camera phone in preparation for my definite return visit to Blue Fin, and step back outside into the bustling street. Double Six Saturday 5 June

66 Bang on 23!

E

ntertaining people consistently for 23 years is no easy task, and last week saw Double Six inch closer to the quarter century mark with a grand birthday party. Spread across four venues, local favorites and huge international DJs brought their talent to Bacio, Syndicate, Double Six’s indoor area and a large outdoor stage by the bungee jump. Guest players included Roger Shah, Preach, Erik Sahl, Riri Mestica, Bobby and Milinka, while laser shows and dancers were on board to spark up the parade. It was a case of ‘August traffic’ as Seminyak was gridlocked for hours, with everyone hoping to get as close to the action as possible. Nobody likes missing out on a Double Six special…

DJ Hoki was also there to start the engines, along with a bikini show to raise the bar and some fire juggling skills from the barmen.
