A

s things get back to normal with the end of the World Cup, nightlife in Jakarta will be back to normal for a few weeks at least before the forthcoming Ramadhan slows things down for a month again. This year, being at the beginning of August, Ramadhan will have a few more ramifications than previous years too. We’re not sure what will happen with August this year – normally a month where many Jakartans head to Bali for the busy weekends there, but this year, who knows? It could become the month of the big chill out. So for now, it’s back to normal, but watch out for the coming closing parties of end of July and start of August that will surely be cranking the pace around town. Also watch out for all the major events this next fortnight in the HereNow and What’s On sections of this edition of TBJ. Any comments about TBJ or anything else in this town, send them to editor@ beatmag.com

D

TAKING THE bali SEASON HIGHER The mighty month of madness is converging on us once again. August in Bali is never a letdown and with all the action going on this year, you’d be crazy to be anywhere else. Two venues in particular with a list of goodies to get set for are Hu’u Bar and KuDeTa; both having locked in a run of special events. Hu’u kicks in on July 30 with ‘The Junction’ and its opening party with DJ’s Anton and Hogi at the wheel. August 7 sees the Spinach All Stars taking over with Karizma and fudge on the decks. Friday 13th is Solid Gold with special guest DJ Golddigger and an Independence Day ‘Red’ Party on the 16th is sure to be a hot dance floor special. Then comes ‘Girl’s Love DJ’s’ on Friday 20 with DJ’s Rubix, Jaziah, Tom Caron, Kevin K and Rogor. Ku De Ta’s iconic high season parties may already have a reputation for being of grand proportions, but this year looks set to blow everything else out of the water thanks to a tenth anniversary line up of events that is bound to keep us all on a summer high. This year’s ‘I’m An Angel’ charity gala dinner on July 31st is set to be another huge night of entertainment and amazing dining as Ash Chandler flying in from Bombay to perform while chef Phillip Davenport serves up his award winning flavors. From there it’s into the August madness where Frankie Knuckles and Heather Small (M People) will be gripping the crowd with house tunes at the Day Party where all things bikini like are expected to be flaunted in style. For a birthday crescendo the Brand New Heavies will be hitting Ku De Ta for a once-only show so do not miss that on the 14th and prepare to be dive into the rabbit hole as the theme on show will be ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Then of course comes White Party time on the 21st and this year will see a Cleopatra Queen of the Nile theme turning the beachside venue into an Egyptian playground. Dave Seaman will be gracing the decks so prepare to get lost in his legendary sounds. To see out the month will be acclaimed world music band Tijuana Cartel, back from Oz with their Flamenco, Reggae and Hip Hop infused sets.

Sound Like Electronica, indie, club Hail From Los Angeles, California

Have Been Classixx are a DJ/Production duo hailing from LA formed by Tyler Blake and Micheal David. These childhood friends began their journey into the DJ musical scene at first using the alias ‘Young Americans’, before changing to ‘Classixx’ - derived from ‘Classic Compilations of different music’. Their music is inspired by artists from Paul Simon to Kraftwerk, with an emphasis firmly on Laid Back Disco Grooves. Classixx have remixed tracks for artists such as Yacht Club, Major Lazer, Groove Armada, Fischerspooner, and even Phoenix. Having given birth to their first successful production named ‘Dial 1’ in 2007, they followed it up with ‘Cold Ast III’ in 2008, and then in 2009 with ‘I’ll Get You’ featuring Jeppe under Kitsune Records.

Piano, Guitar and The CumLaude Concert Series By Erza S.T.

046 | beatmag.com

Contrary to my prediction for this summer holiday; Jakarta’s classical music scene is actually going to be quite busy with plenty of high quality recitals. Not only that, in the second half of the month we’re going to witness the launch of a new series called the ‘CumLaude Series’. This series is the brainchild of Pianist maestro-cum-Composer and artistic director Ananda Sukarlan, presenting talented Indonesian classical musicians who promise to give their best performances. Without a doubt, this series will surely bring some excitement to the Indonesian classical music scene. Expect to see new, young, talented Indonesian musicians performing very soon on this series. Taking place at Teater Kecil in Taman Ismail Marzuki, the CumLaude Concert Series will hold their premiere concert this upcoming July 14, 2010, presenting the talented duo: Elwin Hendrijanto on piano and John Paul on Guitar. Each of them will show us their talent by playing solo. On piano, our brilliant pianist Elwin (who gained his Master’s Degree at the Utrecht Music Conservatory) is going to perform 4 works of Chopin (including the famous Nocturne and ballade no. 1), Paul Seelig and Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin, while dedicated and promising Indonesian classical guitarist John Paul will entertain with three works from Frank Martin, Giulio Regondi and for the very first time Ananda Sukarlan’s own composition of ‘The 5 Lovers of Drupadi’ on solo guitar.

The second concert, five days later will also be at the same venue. This time, Ananda has choosen another very talented Indonesian young pianist Inge Buniardi - who was the winner of the Ananda Sukarlan Award in 2008. Performing solo on her own, Inge will play two major piano works by C. Debussy (Etude No. 11) followed by Brahms’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor Op. 5 after the intermission. This exciting solo recital is also the opening for the Ananda Sukarlan Award 2010. Aside from the CumLaude Series, Jakarta will also have another duo recital for piano by Edward Neeman and Stephanie. These two are world-class pianists who have won several international piano competitions. They met in New York for the very first time and discovered that they had kindred souls. They decided to play the piano as a duo since then. This harmonious collaboration between two worlds (Edward: Australian-American and Stephanie: Indonesian) has taken them around the globe, and now finally in Jakarta Edward and Stephanie will play some interesting arrangements from Schubert, Stravinsky, Barber and even Paganini. Make sure to catch this rare program at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta on this upcoming July 17th.

Last but not least on the Jakarta classical music program for the next two weeks in July is a classical guitar recital under the title of ‘Harmony of Guitar Melody: Imagination’ that will take place at Erasmus Huis on July 16th. Though not much is known about this performance, I managed to find out that it will showcase some of Indonesia’s best classical guitarists such as Jubing Kristianto, Naufal Luthfi Yahya and Rakyan Setiyono as well as some talented students from the Guitar School of Indonesia (GSI). For classical guitar aficionados, this is a concert that is not to be missed. Judging from the pattern since the beginning of this year, I am actually quite optimistic that Jakarta’s classical music scene will get more and more exciting. The local musicians have shown some real improvement, while foreign musicians are showing more and more interest in Indonesia. Let us support their upcoming performances to ensure more happenings in the future. Erza ST is the founding director of the Indonesian Opera Society

In addition to the categories being voted for online, the jurors created 3 special awards, and will select the winners themselves: Best Album, Lifetime Achievement, and Most Inspiring Artist. Denny Sakrie, the head of the jurors, says, ”It’s not that we don’t believe in public opinion. We just want one set of results that can’t possibly be biased.”

Ia bersenandung tentang dinamika keseharian: memberitakan kebahagiaan, kemarahan, kesedihan, ketakutan, kegetiran, sekaligus kekecewaan. Lalulalang Lou Reed—dalam pengaruh acid—menyusuri New York sesekali menyodok. Sekelumit pahit Tom Waits kadang sendu terselip. Pemilihan tajuk The Sun pun punya kisahnya sendiri.

For sure there aren’t that many people who know who Leonardo is. But if you mention Leonardo Ringo, the singer and drummer of Zeke and The Popo, or ex-vocalist of great-butshort-lived-outfit Vessel, you may well jog the memory of a select few. After an 18 year long musical career, he has finally released his first solo album entitled ‘The Sun’. Two respected young Indonesian musicians; Anda Bunga and Dharmo Soedirman produced the album, and were also responsible for convincing Leonardo to release his very own album. Other big names from Indonesia’s alternative scene have supported him as well including: Emil Hussein (Naif), Kartika Jahja (Tika & The Dissidents), Ricky Surya Virgana

Figur mahsyur lainnya ada Emil Hussein (Naif), Kartika Jahja & Susan Agiwitanto (Tika & the Dissidents), Indra Perkasa (Tomorrow’s People Ensemble), Lani Leyli (Amazing in Bed), Ricky Surya Virgana (White Shoes & the Couples Company), Rayendra Yuditia (ZATPP), Christo Putra (Dear Nancy), Mian Meuthia, Mian Tiara, Filipus Davefriz, Chroma String Quartet, Galaxy Big Band dan David Tarigan. Lalu bersulang sendiri-sendiri.

(White Shoes and The Couples Company), David Tarigan (ex-Aksara Records), and many others. In this folk-pop masterpiece Leonardo sings about life, laughter, love-lost, and loneliness. A self-confessed Bowie’s aficionado, it’s clear that he’s heavily influenced by his idols; Lou Reed, Jeff Buckley, Richard Hawley, Tom Waits with New York City, and Whiskey. Witness his elegant show during ICEMA (Indonesia Cutting Edge Music Awards) on July 18th at the Epicentrum Walk, Kuningan. In the meantime, watch his videoclip - directed by Joko Anwar - for the single ‘Insecurity’ on his official website: http://leonardoringo.com

FlawedCharacters

W

hy do we sympathize with characters in good movies? Because they are, like us, flawed. We love to see them rising from zero to hero, because watching that gives us all hope. Here are three upcoming movies where the main characters are all flawed. In ‘Solitary Man’, Michael Douglas is a cheater and traitor. In ‘Inception’, Leonardo Dicaprio steals information from our dreams, and in ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, Jay Baruchel is a silly, goofy, New York City boy who doesn’t seem to care that the world is ending soon. Enjoy them on the biggest screens in the city: www.blitzmegaplex.com

Solitary Man Comedy, Drama. Director: Brian Koppelman, David Levien. Writer: Brian Koppelman. Cast: Michael Douglas, Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito, Jesse Eisenberg, Mary-Louise Parker, Jenna Fischer. After ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ and ‘Oceans 13’, Steven Soderbergh teams up again with Brian Koppelman and David Levien to tell a story about a car magnate (Douglas) who is having a mid-life crisis. This time, Soderbegh produces, while Koppelman writes and directs with Levien. The trio have never failed to deliver before, and with Michael Douglas now leading the cast as a charming bad boy, this comedydrama is another fine effort. As the title suggests, Douglas single-handedly carries the movie as a sympathetic yet flawed character trying to reconnect himself with those he once betrayed.

Inception Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller. Writer / Director: Christopher Nolan. Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cottilard, Michael Caine, Tom Berenger.

After a series of groundbreaking successes – from ‘Memento’ to ‘The Dark Knight’ – nothing could stop us from queuing for Christopher Nolan’s next brainchild. ‘Inception’ explores the themes of imagination and dreams. Dom Cobb (DiCaprio) is able to slip himself into people’s dreams, and then steal information from them. Corporations have been using this talent of his, thus making him an international criminal, so now, to clear his record, he has to run an impossible mission; to get into people’s dreams and plant new data there. In a realm that defies gravity and dimensions, Cobb has to face an unthinkable enemy. It’s a story that promises magnificent visuals and unpredictable twists - well worth queuing up for!

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Action, Adventure. Director: Jon Turteltaub. Writers: Matt Lopez, Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard. Cast: Jay Baruchel, Nicolas Cage, Monica Belucci, Teresa Palmer, Alfred Molina. Sementara, Jay Baruchel pelan-pelan semakin mencuat, sejak “Knocked Up”, “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist”, “She’s Out of My League”, hingga pengisi suara utama dalam “How to Train Your Dragon”. Kehadiran Monica Belucci tentu membuat film ini semakin sedap dipandang. After ‘Prince of Persia’, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer team up again to deliver yet another designed-to-be-franchised fantasy movie: ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’. This time, they work with Jon Tureltaub, who directed their other titles, ‘National Treasure’, and ‘National Treasure: Book of Secrets’. Nicolas Cage is back on screen, still not as a regular human being, but a master sorcerer called Balthazar Blake. He recruits an average Joe, Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) as his reluctant apprentice to help him defend New York City from his arch-nemesis Maxim Hovarth (Alfred Molina). With Monica Belucci as the leading lady, this movie will surely be easy on the eyes.

Call Me Dena DENADA R

Modern Life is Rubbish Plastic Beach Blur Gorillaz V

ery much a product of it’s time, the second full studio album offering from the thinking man’s band of the Britpop era celebrated Britishness in the nineties, and laid bare the often dull reality of middle class English life. Regurgitating the attitude and melodies of such previous British luminaries as The Kinks, The Faces and David Bowie, Damon Albarn & co explore a dreary landscape, set against the perils of British modernisation and a growing fast food, throwaway culture. ‘For Tomorrow’ kicks off with a call to arms and a visit to Primrose Hill with a dejected view over central London, while ‘Sunday Sunday’ methodically ticks off the quintessential English weekend rituals of; Sunday papers, roast lunch, dozing in front of the tele, a walk in the park, old soldiers, a brass band cameo and Songs of Praise. Never as popular or as chart-friendly as subsequent albums ‘Parklife’ or ‘The Great Escape’, ‘Modern Life is Rubbish’ is still essential listening and an indispensable document of the state of the union at the end of a century. Dan Ashcroft

T

aking the concept of rubbish far more literally, Plastic Beach confirms what 2005’s Demon Days was hinting at; global meltdown and our natural environment swamped by trash. Albarn’s nightmarish cartoon creations collaborate with an all-star cast of co-conspirators such as Mos Def, Mark E. Smith, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womak, Gruff Rhys, and the ever-impressive De La Soul to produce a sprawling, daring, innovative, surprising, muddled and magnificent album. ‘Plastic Beach’ lurches from 80s electro synth pop to contemporary British hip-hop (courtesy of up-and-coming Bashy and Kano) and back again with plenty of casio-style blips and loops and a few orchestral maneuvers in the dark. It shouldn’t work, and it’s not quite as cohesive as Demon Days, yet Albarn manages to pull it all together while still dishing out a couple of standout solo tracks; the brilliant ‘Rhinestone Eyes’, and atmospheric ‘Empire Ants’. It’s a long way from his Blur days, and shows that this man is simply a walking creative god. Damon, we salute you! Dan Ashcroft

and worked in their restaurants both in Bali and Jakarta over the last 15 years. Combinations such as Monday’s Fruit Salad, Pan Fried Dori Fish with Tuscan Sauce and Banana Pandan Roll, or Friday’s Spring Roll, Indonesian Grilled Chicken and Corn Sarikaya Puding are just some of the options. My office companion and I tried these two set menus (both not available every day of the week but this was a special case) and they were substantial, tasty and well-rounded meals. The staff too are competent and fast working guaranteeing a seamless, quick and no-fuss lunch time experience,

which is important with a busy schedule through the working day. Being one of the only restaurants in the Kuningan Rasuna area, the busy Mezza Café is perfectly sited, and especially ideal, for the many residents of the Rasuna Towers complex and the neighbouring offices around the Kuningan area. Plenty of parking is available, and as mentioned at the beginning, this lunch at 55k++ has the taste and quality to make the trip to Aston Rasuna well worth it. food

It is indeed pleasant to be reminded that going to hangout places in Jakarta doesn’t always require you dressing up to the nines, and can be nourishing in more ways than just the obvious. De Hooi bar and restaurant in Pondok Indah is one of those places. Going to this establishment, all you need is a good attitude and the willingness to have an absurd amount of fun.

066 | beatmag.com

I

first dropped by solo for lunch after the meetings I had in Pondok Indah Mall and was immediately captivated by the Englishstyle pub charm with the well worn dark wooden furniture that pulls you in with that instant laid back feeling and cozy atmosphere. The dark oak bar takes up most of the front room allowing easier access for the beer thirsty patrons. As expected in an English-style pub, the place offers a vast selection of local and international brands of beers and bottled lagers. De Hooi is part of the Bugils chain that includes Eastern Promise, Cazbar, and the legendary Bugils pub which despite closing its outlet in Jakarta around two years ago, lives on in the Island of Gods. De Hooi itself was only opened three years ago, yet during its puppy period has managed to pull in an impressive number of locals and expatriate regulars. This is most likely due to the bar’s laid back, far from pretentious, anything goes, atmosphere. The place may look a bit worn, but this is where the charm lies - the non-clinical, ‘just like home’ feeling. And that’s exactly what enticed me to sit for hours savouring my lunch while slowly sipping my Bintang. I also love the fact that De Hooi is one of those places that wakes up early and sleeps really late. They serve breakfast at 8 am and close whenever the last man (or woman) leaves the building. The regulars usually have their meals, savour their experience here and stay for drinks. It is indeed a good place to expand your networks and meet new people, which I noticed is effortlessly easy to do. The menu offers a good selection of Mexican, Western, South East Asian and Indian cuisines - including the favorite English pub classics such as bangers and mash, meat pies and a selection of steaks. I was feeling a lil Mexican

that day, plus the searing heat of the day left me craving for some tasty Latino flavors, so I ordered beef fajitas (55K) for main course and decided to mix it up with Greek salad (55K) and Tom Yum Soup for starter. The service was fast and attentive and the food was sufficiently proportioned, fresh and tasty. The beef fajitas were well presented with two folded sheets of flour tortilla and a scrumptious portion of sauteed beef, red bell pepper and onions, garnished with fresh guacamole and pico de gallo. For a place that exudes an English pub atmosphere, their Mexican dishes are authentically delicious. The velvety texture of the guacamole definitely won me over. The Tom Yup Soup is another exciting dish. The reddish clear soup burst with flavor and was touched with an adequate hint of spiciness. A refreshing dish for a hot Jakartan day. My experience in De Hooi was overall a success. One of the pleasures of the place is its laid back, anything-goes, all-day, comein-for-beer-or-a-bite attitude. It provided a comfortable and equally exciting experience that left me feeling much better than when I first walked in. [Text: Fonnyta Amran, photos: Ramadhan]

Not only does he want to expand the network, but he also wants to open a hair academy that is acknowledged by the Ministry of Education of Indonesia as a real qualification. He says that this idea might not come to fruition immediately, but he has started to convey the message to the Ministry that they need to recognize the importance of proper certification in the field of hair styling. He says that in the next five years, Indonesia should be able to send skilled hair stylists abroad to work as stylists and not just as assistants.

Fabula ‘Fabula’ is an exhibition showcasing the beautiful works of art created by Catur Ary Candra Saputra, Ermambang Bendung Wijaya and Irfan Winoto Dechan - curated by Sutrisno Prianggodo. The word fabula originates from Russia, and can be roughly translated as a form of narrative or storytelling; very fitting for this exhibition since all pieces depict some kind of surreal narrative. The exhibition will be held from the 7th to 17th of July at Vanessa Art Link, Jakarta Art District, Lower Ground – East Mall Grand Indonesia Shopping Town. For more information call 0811992727 or email: info@vanessaartlink.com or vanessaarthouse@yahoo.com.

Jakarta Wasted Artists ‘Jakarta Wasted Artists’ will feature the works of young aspiring visual artists who continue to exist and create art in today’s hectic times. The artists include; Hauritsa, Henry Foundation, Krisgatha Achmad, Mateus Bondan and Mushowir Bing - all full-time industrial workers who have never used art as a means for supporting their day to day life. Their passion for art is more than a hobby for them; some would say it has become an obsession. Their creativity runs parallel with their efforts to survive within their day jobs. The exhibition will run from the 13th to 27th of July at AOD Artspace, Jl. Panglima Polim V No. 38, Melawai. Tel: (021) 7230413

BRIDGING THE ART WORLD Chandra Johan, Indonesian senior curator talks about his long standing curatorial achievements in the Indonesian art world, his concerns on the recent trends in Indonesian contemporary art, and his firm belief in carrying the artists’ voice to bridge the frequently misconstrued public understanding of art.

It appears that Indonesian contemporary artists have lost the signpostage to find their way back to their metophoric artistic home – a safe place where Indonesian art belonged and identity laid. Over the last 60 years Indonesian art has sometimes been intimidated by modern western influences but now they have left that all behind them. This exhibition was presented to display that fact once again. All the artists presenting their works at this show at the National Gallery in Jakarta Pusat from June 30 to July 9, were displaying their own perception on how they see their world, and through the mixed mediums including paint, screen, wire, sculpture and multi-media, they have individually created their own direction but in the process left this idea of the Indonesian home behind. The flirtation of some pieces to the angst of others highlights the original and uplifting state of Indonesian modern art of today. As curator, Aminudin TH Siregar points out, “(post-colonial art critic) Sumardjo’s hope on the ‘repurification of art’ has not yet been completely fulfilled, but it does not mean we do not have a ‘way home’. It is an unavoidable fact that however persistent we are in evaluating the ‘pure views on art according to ourselves’, the Western viewpoints will always haunt us.” As the cultural navel gazing went on, the art was left to speak for itself. And some of it Edwin Rahardjo and Heri Dono at the show opening.

Get ready for a whole new world of entertainment and dining coming to Dyana Pura Street in Seminyak. The popular music and food spot, JP’s Warung Club, is undergoing a huge transformation that will see its current restaurant extend into a much larger live music lounge, playing host to both national and international acts along with Bali’s famous world music act Saharadja who will be on the bill regularly, just as they were when they started out six years ago. French Chef Frederic Pougault will also be on board heading the kitchen (formerly with Gado-Gado, Red Carpet and Sardine). Beyond renovations, the JP’s crew will also be opening a string of new concepts within the same area that will incorporate a funky lounge and bar called ‘Maria Magdalena’ with new wave and old school electro tunes, billiard tables, new gastronomical adventures with a sushi bar operated by Ryoshi, cinema evenings, art and photo exhibitions and plenty more. Keep your ear to the ground and get ready for a high season with plenty of fresh action. JP’s Warung Club, Jl. DhyanaPura Street # 6, Seminyak.

Local Bali band ‘Rude Devils’ have just tied off their latest album and it’s ready to hit the shelves. Titled ‘Elephant Years’, the album will be released under the new independent label Revolusi Music Indonesia. This is the band’s second album release after their first EP turned full self titled album was put out in 1999. Formerly known as ‘Joker’ in the early 90s, the band had a few line-up changes and in ’96 the Rude Devils were born. You could say there have been a few drinks between recording sessions, or perhaps a few hundred, but the band believe they are now as solid as ever and members Totox (vocals and guitar), Ole (bass), Yudha (lead guitar) and Teguh (drums) are amped about the new sounds. Keep up with the score at www.myspace. com/rudedevils or look for the album at Reform Posse, Dynamite, Ashes Tattoo and Cibola.

Keep your ears to the ground for some new sounds on the jazz scene. Indonesia’s answer to Miles Davis, Rio Sidik has been taking his writing and performance skills to the studio lately, laying down tracks with his regular players in preparation for an upcoming album release. Rio has also just headed off to the UK for a spell of shows with some other amazing players over the next couple of months, so expect to hear more about those recording sessions when he gets back. If you’ve ever been to Ryoshi on a Monday night or SOS Saturdays you’ll want to get your hands on a copy of whatever these cats lay down…

Black Legend T

DEJA’VU FRI 16 JULY 10PM

he Beat gets some air time with a man who’s been serving up electronic

treats to the hungry masses for over 20 years. J Reverse aka Black legend has been witness to plenty of changes over the years and with numerous remixes, world tours and international hits under his belt, his opinion is one that counts…

With over 20 years of experience of spinning and track production, there must have been some major learning curves along the way for you. Any particular moments that stand out as marking your success or changing your direction over the years? I’d say that for the first decade of my career, when turning points in the club music scene were so well noticeable, each change was a new challenge for me - being called to be an active part of this or that scene. Of course the Black Legend success in 2000 was like an earthquake in my life not only for my career, but since then the club music scene has started turning into a whole new business where the advent of the Internet has contributed to creating a club music melting pot, a sort of globalization of sound. This has allowed me to finally feel totally free to take every direction I want, anytime I want. Finally; real freedom of expression. Gaining popularity as a DJ can often take its toll on one’s health thanks to the lifestyle that comes with it. Any major lessons you’ve had to learn on that front? Of course we all know we are not living the healthiest life possible, personally I’ve learnt to listen to my body. One thing I’ve learned is that it doesn’t matter if you are a clubber, a DJ or a carpenter, cigarettes will kill you more than everything else, so I quit four years ago. When would you say there have been noticeable shifts in worldwide trends and the direction of dance music over the years?

090 | beatmag.com

Definitely across 2002 and 2003 the Internet totally transformed the world of clubbing and everything in connection to it, giving dance music many new directions, very good ones as well as very bad ones. Do you think the digital era has been a blessing, a curse, or simply another gateway for contemporary expression? In my opinion, the digital revolution, like every real revolution, put dangerous weapons in dangerous hands. I’d say that for the first two or three years there was a good balance between the good and the bad use of the opportunities given by this new way of distributing content and connecting people. I’m now sorry to see how the whole digital dance music market is in the hands of only two parties, on one side is the dominating “legal” online retailers acting like major labels used to do, while on the other side, a jungle of “tolerated by retailers” pirates earning money from free downloads they post around. I have to admit I’m very upset about the actual direction the digital world is taking; online retailers making a business out of labels and DJ promotion, charts totally faked by labels and producers buying their own releases, good production being illegally downloaded thousands of times while only selling 10 in a legal shop. Of course we still have a crossover, dance music side of the business that seems to respect the rules enough, but the underground scene is abandoned in total anarchy. Yes, I’m a bit pessimistic about the direction it’s all going right now, I hope something will change soon, and I’m trying to

mic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onth give my little contribution for what is possible. How did you first become involved in the production side of music? Was there already prior knowledge of musical composition or did you learn as you plugged away? Since I was a teenager I have become aware of my double personality, a kind of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I was a total electronics, computer, and DIY ‘in general geek’ by day, but a complete party animal at night. About 25 years ago when I started to hear about discos and all the technology involved with that world, things were too expensive for me to buy so the geek in me one day said “hey you have an electronics diploma, build it all yourself”. I then started building my first DJ mixer, my mobile disco setup to rent at parties, then my first sampler and my first, second, third and fourth studio, from the ground up, walls, floor, cables, lights. Did I learn as I plugged away? I’m still plugging in devices… How much of your time does your label ‘Reverse Records’ take up for you? I try to dedicate about two days a week for the actual main label activities like promotion, licensing, catalogue exploitation etc, but email is always there, tempting me with new music coming in, news about sales performance, and feedback on releases which keeps me on it constantly. You’ve got a list of releases to rival anyone on the international circuit; are there any particular tracks from over the years that hold deeper significance or sentimental value for you? I’ve walked this way taking little and slow steps, some of these steps made some more noise than others, but every single one is significant to me. To mention a few of them, I can name my remix “Kickin’ In The Beat”. Also being a 23 year old guy and remixing a Todd Terry production for the legendary NYC based label Cutting Records was a dream to me, a dream that lead me to remix “Shimmy Shake” by 740 Boyz, delivering them a two million copy worldwide hit. Yes that’s when I was really convinced that it could become my job for life. Under the title Black Legend you’ve now hit the ten year mark; how would you compare your current sound with that of Black Legend’s initial birth? At the present I’d just say it’s pretty far apart. The first years right after Black Legend’s big success I was being heavily pushed by the entire dance music business to produce that same sound over and over. The concept

was working well for their business but actually killing my creativity. I’ve since decided to go back to producing with the same spirit I had before Black Legend. If you could say three things to the J-Reverse of 20 years ago what would they be? 1- You can’t trust every person you meet on your way; 2- Get a manager, you can’t have control of everything yourself; 3- Eat less and work out more! Any particular vision of yourself in ten years from now? I won’t say with gray hair because my head’s already lost its hair! Seriously though, my vision for the future is simply to be able to mix today’s experience with my youthful ambitions. What about daddies on the scene that you still look up to yourself; who do you still take inspiration from these days? DJ Pierre in first place! He keeps teaching me how it’s possible to keep loving the essence of what we love doing, away from the fashion glittered side of the club scene. It doesn’t matter if you like techno, progressive or whatever you want to call it, do it because you feel it not because it’s cool. What sort of a set can we expect to hear at Deja’vu? Well, I’m always uncomfortable categorizing, but… a blend of electro and tech sounds with a light topping of mother land black soul. If your body rhythmically shakes as an involuntary consequence due to the state of your soul induced by the music your brain and body are feeling together, and you realize you are not the only one feeling like that, then welcome to the Mother Land Black Soul tribal ritual! Any major action we can watch out for over the rest of 2010? New remixes re-released of “You See The Trouble With Me” to celebrate the 10th anniversary. I’ve just finished two new productions that I’ll be testing out at gigs for a month from now before I decide a future for them, one of the two has a very good potential to be a new Black Legend single. J Reverse will play at Deja’vu’s Seventh Anniversary Party under his world renowned Black Legend title on Saturday, July 17th, so get down there and get yourself into his groove…

Jl. Pratama, Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua, Ph 0361778181 www.theroyalsantrian.com

Although Tanjung Benoa may seem like quite a distance from the busy Kuta area, its beautiful calm beaches, fun water activities, a nearby golf course and friendly, relaxed ‘village’ atmosphere make it a well worthwhile destination. The promise of a sensational lunch on arrival is another firm reason for hitting the bypass and with that in mind, sooner than expected, I’m wandering through the smart lobby of The Royal Santrian Villas, heading for onsite signature restaurant AllSpice.

room offers unobstructed views across the alfresco dining area, through a row of swaying palms on to the ocean and beyond. An adjoining outside covered bar facilitates pre and post meal drinks in a bright and breezy contemporary setting, while the main dining area is a sea of plush furnishings and smart décor with splashes of red and white perfectly complimenting dark wooden tones.

A Tempura Prawn Salad duly follows, with Japanese tofu and fine fish roe amongst a bowl of green leaves with a light yusu dressing. The crunchy tempura batter and light, almost milky texture of the tofu work wonders on the tongue. For the main there are a choice of two dishes divided firmly into ‘surf’ or ‘turf’. Although the grilled beef tenderloin looks tempting, I can never pass up on fresh fish and opt for the newly conceived triple seafood. The result of a happy accident in the kitchen (according to Chef Andre), it’s a veritable platter of fruits de mer – “seafood for the seafront”. Snapper fillet, soft shell crab and Japanese scallop are all piled high next to tender asparagus and a delightful sweet potato gratin. Conversation grinds to a halt as everyone gets stuck in – a clear indication that multitasking is just not an option and all efforts need to be channeled into savouring the fare before us.
