ummer seems shorter this year. The usual partying and fun commonly associated with summer celebrations in August have been cut short due to the holy month of Ramadhan. The height of summer in Jakarta is usually felt during Indonesia’s Independence Day on the 17th of August, but because of the month long fasting period, estimated to fall on the 11th of August, all forms of late night partying will grind to a halt. Before all clubs, except the ones in malls or hotels, are closed for a whole month according to government regulations, a lot of events will be heading to Jakarta so party people can still get their groove on before then. Check out what’s coming in this edition’s What’s On and Here Now section to plan out your final nights of partying, before the end does cometh, well until Ramadhan is over. Party on Jakarta!

Langsung saja baca rubrik What’s On dan Here Now untuk merencanakan malam-malam untuk pesta terakhir anda, ya setidaknya sampai bulan Ramadhan berlalu. Party on Jakarta!

HOOBASTANK Hard Rock cafe Tues 27 july 9 pm
Currently cruising the globe playing a series of shows, Hoobastank are about to grace to our shores once again. With a stack more grunt planned than last year’s acoustic set and a new bass player to show off, the boys are set to pack a punch down at Hard Rock Café. The Beat stepped up for some time on the mic with vocalist Douglas Robb… What would you say are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned about the reality of being a touring rock band that may not have crossed your mind when you were jamming it out for your first few gigs? It definitely isn’t as glamorous as it may seem from the fan’s perspective. It is a lot of hard work and it is a lot of time spent away from your friends and family. That being said, I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Seeing the world and meeting so many amazing people has made me grow as a person more than I could have ever foreseen.
026 | beatmag.com
As your success has continued to grow and continued to push you onto the road for longer periods of time, have any of you struggled with being away from home or the difficulties that are faced due to distance between partners and loved ones? It has always caused some difficulty and strain on relationships. You have to find the right person who can handle you being away for so long. Over the years though we have been very good about bringing out our loved ones on tour frequently. That always makes the two of you feel better and it’s fun to travel the world together.
hereNOW
onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic ‘The Reason’ obviously brought about a huge wave of popularity for you guys that widened your audience the world over. Since its release there hasn’t been a single to match it as far as sales charts go, though as Markku has said in the past, this is never a true reflection of appreciation, especially compared to live shows. Have you found that on the live front the core fan base has continued to grow from city to city, country to country? In some cases yes and in others no. Our fanbase has continued to grow in some countries such as Japan, Korea and other Asian countries while at the same time in some places such as the U.S. and Europe we’ve seen a decline. Europe is probably due to the fact that we haven’t been back there in a long time. As for the states, the fans here are always looking for the “latest thing”. That being said, our core fans who were there before The Reason are still there and they are some of the most passionate fans ever. Where in the world have you been most surprised by fan appreciation? I’m always most surprised with our fans in Asia and Southeast Asia. They are SO passionate about music and about our band. They shower us with gifts. They show up at the airports and hotels. It’s quite humbling. It’s something I never dreamed would happen to us but it’s amazing. Which bands have you crossed paths with over the years that have struck a chord with all of you? Anyone in particular that you do your best to catch up with as often as possible? There are so many that it’s hard to keep track of but some of my favorite bands ever to tour with are the ones that we were just friends with in the first place. Bands like Incubus, Linkin Park and Lost Prophets. On a production level, who has offered the most insight and advice into your songwriting and recording process over the years in regards to forging your sound? It’s more of a process of trial and error with us. We write and write and then see what works. Our producers over the last 15 years have had an influence on us of course. Jim Wirt and Howard Benson. Was there a point where you all needed time out to find renewed energy and passion in working together?
I think for most bands, including ours, it’s a constant fight for momentum. After touring for Every Man for Himself we definitely needed some time to relax even if it meant going “off the radar”. Unfortunately, in this business if you want to succeed then you don’t have much time to relax. For most relationships between two people, going travelling together can be a true decider as to whether the love will last; have you guys had any harsh lessons in learning to respect each other’s boundaries or do you generally just sort stuff out over a Chinese burn session on the tour bus? We’ve had our share of arguments and differences over the years for sure. We’ve become a lot better at communicating with each other though. We know each other almost better than we know ourselves. The best way for us is always to be honest and talk it out. We are all best of friends outside of the band and we use that friendship to work through problems. What have you been most excited about lately as a band? I’ve been the most excited about writing new music and writing it as a 4-piece band again. For the last two albums we wrote as a 3 piece and had a studio session bass player come in and record the bass parts. Then we’d have a touring bass player travel with us and play the parts. Now that Jesse Charland is an official member of Hoobastank we’ve been writing and demoing songs as a “full band” again. It feels great! Individually, what are some of the most exciting things to be happening in your lives this year? Well, for me it’s the upcoming birth of my first child. My wife is due in late September. It’s a girl. We are both extremely excited. Did you manage to soak up much of what Bali has to offer on your last trip here? Impressions? Our last trip to Bali was so fast that we didn’t have a chance to soak anything up. This time around we will have a day to relax before the show so I’m looking forward to just relaxing on the beach. Maybe try my hand at surfing? I’d love to go see some wild monkeys again. Back in 2002-2003 we had the chance to spend a few days in Bali and it was a great time. [That show was also at Hard Rock but on the Sand Island stage in the hotel.]

What will be your classical show du jour for this time period?
P
erhaps some of you are not yet familiar with Keroncong music - first introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The word ‘kroncong’ actually refers to the name of a ukulele-type instrument that creates the ‘chrongchrong-chrong’ sound. However, a Kroncong performance (usually referred to as a Kroncong orchestra) consists of a flute, violin, melody guitar, cello and plucked bass in pizzicato style with the accompaniment of a female or male singer. Though it is often considered old-fashioned folk music by most Indonesians; the group called Kerontjong Toegoe is committed to the revival of this genre by bringing it to broader audience. On this coming July 28th, Kerontjong Toegoe will perform as a guest star together with Taman Suropati Chamber – a music community that has been established since last October 2008 under the initiation of Ages Dwiharso. It seems that since their collaboration in 2008, both groups decided to do another gig together, so for this upcoming one they will perform songs with a various range of repertoires ranging from children songs, folk tunes and even a few classics. Selections such as ‘Twinkle-Twinkle Little Stars’, ‘Apuse’ (Irian Jaya folk song), ‘Bengawan Solo’ (the famous compo-

sition from the late Gesang), ‘Burung Kutilang’, ‘La Cumparcita’ and ‘Serenade’ by Haydn are just some of the songs that they are planned for this concert. This is quite an extraordinary opportunity as they rarely perform. Even more amazing is that most of the orchestra players are very young, ranging from seven to sixteen years old. Clearly, saving a genre of music can only be done when there is regeneration. One day after the above performance, prepare yourself for the vocal and piano recital of tenor Farman Purnama and pianist Inge M. Buniardi. Farman Purnama is one of Indonesia’s best young classical singers who has been singing and performing in various concerts and opera roles both in Jakarta and internationally. Last year, he decided to improve his professional musical career by studying vocal performing art at Utrecht Conservatory with Henny Diemer. During the recital of ‘Un Momento di Contento’, expect to see a new and profoundly improved Farman Purnama performing the works of Schubert, Schumann, Mozart, Verdi and many more together with Inge M. Buniardi.
Four of Indonesia’s best young pianists; Adhi Jacinth, Edith Widayani, Alex Wibisono and Alfred Sugiri will join forces on the piano together with the choir from the renowned Parahyangan University on this upcoming August 5th under the Voices of Magic concert series that was initiated by the Rotary Club of Jakarta in 2001. Under the title ‘Magical Broadway Moment’, the Rotary Club of Jakarta and the Rotary Club of Kebayoran have teamed up to facilitate this performance as a fund raising event for their humanitarian projects. Being for a good cause as well as showcasing some of our best young talents means this is definitely one of those concerts that you just can’t miss. Later on in the month we are lucky enough to have another rare opportunity - this time to hear some of the best Philippine vocals courtesy of The Philippines Madrigal Singers. They are coming to town for a concert on August 10th at Usmar Ismail Hall. The Philippines Madrigal Singers a.k.a. ‘Madz’ are known as the first choir in the world to win the European Grand Prix of Choral Singing twice in 1997 and 2007. With an average of two overseas concert tours in a year, the choir has strengthened its reputation as the country’s most active ambassadors of goodwill, and perhaps also one of the world’s most traveled choirs. This dedication was recognized by UNESCO who acknowledged them as ‘UNESCO Artists for Peace’ in July 2009, charging them with the mission of supporting UNESCO programs on cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. On their ‘Indonesia Goodwill Concert Tour 2010’, the choir will also perform in Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya as well as Jakarta; showcasing a wide repertoire of various styles and forms from
renaissance music, classical music, international folk songs, contemporary and avant-garde music and even popular music. If you are a big fan of the TV series Glee, perhaps you will get a similar musical experience by watching Madz. With such a great reputation, it is definitely a must see concert.

Astrid
Selain itu Astrid digamit mengisi album kompilasi A Portrait of Yovie membawakan lagu karya Yovie Widianto bertajuk Tak 100%.

Astrid Sartiasari, better known as just Astrid, started her musical career when she was a just a teenager. She was chosen as the best vocalist at the ‘High School Band Festival’ in Surabaya. She began her professional career by frequently singing at one of the biggest nightclubs in Surabaya, Colors. Very impressed by her talent, Colors then sent Astrid’s demo to Sony Music.
A year after that, Astrid returned to the public domain with her collaboration with Saint Loco on ‘Kedamaian’. In February 2007 she issued a repackage of her debut album ‘Astrid’, with the single ‘Jadikan Aku Yang Kedua’. In the same year, Astrid had the honour of contributing to the soundtrack of movie remake ‘Badai Pasti Berlalu’, where she sang ‘Merpati Putih’.
Sony Music showed a very good response by inviting Astrid to participate in a soundtrack movie album, ‘Tusuk Jalengkung’, with a song called ‘Ratu Cahaya’. She was also given the chance to get involved in the ‘A Portrait of Yovie’ album and sang one song written by Yovie Widianto, ‘Tak 100%’. She also featured on the soundtrack for ‘Vina Bilang Cinta’ by singing Vina Panduwinata’s ‘Di Dadaku Ada Kamu’ and ‘Cinta’.
Now Astrid is back with her brand new album ‘Lihat Aku Sekarang’, with hit single ‘Tentang Rasa’. This piece is actually a compilation of material she has been collecting since 2008. She’s supported by some big names such as Tere, Novi M. Umar, Ade ‘Domino’, Dide ‘Hijau Daun’ and DJ Matius ‘Saint Loco’.
At the end of 2005 Astrid finally released her debut album titled simply ‘Astrid’. With this album, she tried to push her gloomy side and self-categorized this as a “dark pop record”. The single of this album, ‘Cinta Itu’, was used as theme song for the soundtrack to the horror flick ‘Mirror’.
Check her out on national TV on these dates: July 23 (SCTV – Inbox), July 28 (ANTV – Mantap), and July 31 (RCTI – Dahsyat).

Zeke Khaseli:
Makan Salak Lalu Masuk Surga Di kalangan penggemar musik bukan umum, Zeke Khaseli bukanlah nama asing.
Musiknya pekat terpengaruh The Beatles era psikadelik. Selain itu di sana-sini bakal tercium sedikit bau Blur, Pavement, Flaming Lips, Beck, Daniel Johnston serta Adam Green. Pula, kental nuansa film fiksi ilmiah, utamanya di departemen lirik. Sementara durasi lagu umumnya pendek-pendek, dua hingga tiga menitan. Soal alasan dipilihnya judul unik macam Salacca Zalacca, Zeke berkisah, “Suatu hari gue, Anggun (Priambodo), dan Bin (Harlan) makan salak. Salaknya enak. Dan salak itu dalam bahasa latin disebut ‘Salacca Zalacca,’ menurut Wikipedia. Sempat juga terpikir untuk menamakan album ini ‘Salak Masuk Surga’” Coba kita lihat apa Salacca Zallaca berujung diterima khalayak. Sudah begitu, untuk memastikan layak atau tidaknya Salacca Zallaca diterima masuk surga dunia hiburan dengan tangan terbuka
Among alternative music activists, Zeke Khaseli is cult-like, a musical anomaly, and arguably, a wunderkind. He started building his reputation in 2001 when his band, Lain, released their first album ‘Djakarta Goodbye’. At that time he still lived in the USA and distributed the album via his own label based out of Seattle, Our Coffee Records. Not long after that he published ‘Veteran Travellers’, a single that made quite a big buzz within Indonesia’s cutting edge scene.
version of the Oscars) along with films ‘Macabre’ and ‘Rumah Dara’.
In 2003 Zeke returned to Jakarta and re-released ‘Djakarta Goodbye’ with local label Surgery Records. In 2004, Harris Khaseli (his real name) made another big step with Zeke and the Popo; his second music project. He wrote ‘World Unrescued’, a song that was included in the phenomenal compilation ‘JKT:SKRG’.
Regarding the contents, Zeke says that the album is like a documentary of his daily life. The music is very much influenced by The Beatles during their psychedelic era. You can also feel the musical influence of Pavement, Flaming Lips, Beck, Daniel Johnston, and Adam Green, while the lyrics are inspired by science fiction movies.
His career got even more interesting when people started to ask him to do music scores for movies. He finally got involved in the fictional movie ‘KALA’, for which he won a Citra Award (local
Witness Zeke Khaseli’s skill for yourself during these dates: July 25, ‘On The Up’ event in EX Plaza, or July 31 at Score, Cilandak Town Square.
Under the name Zeke Khaseli, his latest release is ‘Salacca Zalacca’. This album is actually a collection of songs which he gave away for free on his website, zekekhaseli.com between August 2009 and January 2010. However, the songs on the album are slightly different versions as they were remixed/remastered again by Jonathan Vanco.

GOING NOSTALGIC
064 | beatmag.com
P
erhaps it was the Jakarta air that evening, smelling like it usually does of petrol, metal and dust coupled with a hint of mildew from the impending rain that made me feel a little nostalgic and had me craving for Kerak Telor; a traditional Betawi dish which is sadly a little more than difficult to find nowadays. My earliest memories of Kerak Telor involve short weekends at my grandparent’s house in East Jakarta, with rooms that always smelt like baked cookies and an old stereo set in the common room blasting out Qur’an verses. Weekend evenings were always slow in that house, with my grandma gently rocking in her chair, and me gorging on homemade chocolate pudding whilst listening to her stories. Grandpa with his thick black coffee would join us after the evening prayer for some veranda chat, along with my brother with his consistently annoying prankish behavior. I remember the pushcart vendors selling all kinds of traditional cuisine, but always at around 8pm the Kerak Telor vendor would pass by and stop at our gate. I have always been a fan of Betawi culinary delights, with Kerak Telor being the supreme favourite in my mind. A dish that once was considered elitist food and only served at big parties held by colonial government and wealthy Betawians, it has now been adopted as street food and gradually pushed out of the city centre along with the diminishing indigenous Betawi community. It took me a lot of asking around to find an authentic Kerak Telor vendor to satisfy my craving that day, until a friend finally pointed me in the direction of the pedestrian walkway opposite Kemang Dim Sum Fest where I found the 50 year old Kerak Telor vendor Baasir Suhari from Tegal Parang village.
Delighted, I ask him to make two portions of Kerak Telor to go as I chat with him about fond memories of ‘back in the days’ - apparently he’s been making and selling the dish for 25 years now. Pak Baasir’s eyes gleam when talking about the food he sells, but with rather subdued irritation he tells me that now Kerak Telor is losing its authenticity, with non-Betawian vendors from other islands of Indonesia selling it with no passion for the cuisine. “Isn’t it good to have the non-Betawian interested in promoting this cuisine, pak?” I enquire, watching him place the parboiled sticky rice on a small clay wok. He shakes his head while pouring the egg onto the sticky rice and sprinkling on spoonfulls of fried shallots, dried shrimps and a few spices. “Not if they take away jobs from the Betawians,” he says simply. Skillfully he allows the wok to be occasionally licked by the flames to give the upper surface of the Kerak Telor a delicious roasted aroma. “I’m just saying that if you want a good authentic Kerak Telor, find a native Betawian vendor, like me,” he continues. Finishing off, he scatters some fried onion and serundeng (relish of grated coconut and spices) on top. It’s nothing short of luscious. The combination of the fried egg aroma with coconut and fried onion mixture dances up to my nose. Memories from my grandparent’s house come rushing back and fill me with delight. He hands me the wrapped dish which only costs me 30k. “Original Kerak Telor from Pak Baasir, miss. Guaranteed,” which I eagerly devour with an equal sense of joy and sentimentality. Ahh, nostalgia has never smelled this good. [Text & photos: Fonnyta Amran].

ast week, my foodie friend Rudy invited Paul (my now ‘more-than-friend-person’) and I on a double date to the newly-opened Ismaya Group’s restaurant, Mr. Curry - a unique Japanese infused Indian food restaurant. Paul and I were perplexed by the invitation as Rudy has always been very private about his flavour of the day/week/month, so we were understandably excited to be checking out his current pick. The night went smoothly enough as Mr. Curry provided enough excitement to distract us from how awkward and uncomfortable Ed (Rudy’s catch) was around us, but Rudy didn’t seem to notice, so we let that slide. As for Mr. Curry, the restaurant is indeed another classic Ismaya venture. It is unique without being

trite, and offers a great selection of curry and non-curry dishes. With the decor reminiscent of something out of someone’s kitchen - complete with intimate homely ambiance - Mr. Curry brings a delectably unique world flavour to the table. The dining area is surrounded by kitchen utensils, cooking ingredients and cooking spices, stacked strategically to create two private dining rooms. A large glass window in front displays replicas of the menu items in line with Ismaya’s other outlet Pasta de Waraku. The menu has a huge variety of different mango based curry sauces and different level of spiciness depending on one’s preference. All menu items
are made with Japanese ingredients and done in Mr. Curry’s special style of cooking which is unique as well as exciting. Just take the chicken katsu curry (58k) for example, the merging of the crispy fried chicken breast and generous helping of the luscious curry sauce took the Japanese katsu style to a whole other level. Or the Tandoori naan pizza (48K), Rudy’s comment about whether it was Italian infused Indian cuisine as opposed to Japanese falling on deaf ears as we all tucked into the Tandoori slices. Despite being a fierce resister of fatty red meat, Paul ordered the oxtail curry rice - much to my amazement - and seemed to be enjoying the combination of these Asian delights. I did, however end up finishing the oxtail pieces on his plate to shut up his health paranoia ramblings. Rudy’s date Ed opted for tofu curry ramen (58K) which seemed to be among one of the less adventurous tasting dishes as well as a crowd favourite, but apparently not so in Ed’s opinion, who shoved his bowl slightly further away and sipped on his apple juice instead the entire night. Three of us ended up sharing the ramen bowl and were pleased with the agreeable combination of tofu cubes, minced beef and sliced tofu skin puff swimming in spicy gravy. Apparently, Ed’s taste (when asked about the food) leaned more towards American cuisine. It was a relatively smooth double date, mainly due to how unique and fascinating Mr. Curry is. I would give another appreciative nod to Ismaya for its effort in bringing a new flavor to Jakarta’s culinary scene. As for Rudy’s date, well... lets just say, he a has rather limited adventurous taste and would probably rather be taken to a fast food restaurant. Text: Fonnyta Amran, photos: Mr. Curry.

The End of the SUMMER
et’s be honest, after ‘Inception’, there seems to be no good movies on the horizon for the rest of the year. Angelina Jolie may kick some ass in ‘Salt’, and pretend to be the female version of Jason Bourne, but can we expect any new twists from this exhausted genre? Meanwhile, in a posh suburban neighbourhood, Demi Moore and David Duchovny are ‘The Joneses’ that everyone is trying to keep up with. However, the little gem that might just touch your heart could be Justin Timberlake and Jeff Bridges’ tale of father-and-son in ‘The Open Road’. Check the schedule, only in www.blitzmegaplex.com.
Salt Action, Thriller. Director: Phillip Noyce. Writer: Kurt Wimmer. Cast: Angelina Jolie, Liv Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor. CIA Officer Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honor, and her country until a rogue defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt then has to prove her loyalty, and so uses her kick-ass skills to evade capture and prove her loyalty. However, does she really know that she’s not guilty? It’s this question of identity mixed with plenty of action sequences that evokes shades of ‘The Bourne Identity’ trilogy. Angelina Jolie works together again with director Philip Noyce after their collaboration on ‘The Bone Collector’ in 1999. The character-driven story contains plenty of twists, courtesy of writer Kurt Wimmer (‘Law Abiding Citizen’ and ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’), yet ‘Salt’ won’t challenge your brain too much. That said, we have been waiting for a while for Jolie to kick our asses again, and this movie certainly delivers on that front.

The End of the Bar”. It seems like nobody actually cared much about Derrick Borte and Randy T. Dinzler’s first movie back in 2002, ‘The End of the Bar’. This year however, sees their return with a much more inspired effort. Supported with a better-known cast that includes David Duchovny and Demi Moore, ‘The Joneses’ is about a super-ideal family living in a posh suburban neighbourhood. Mr. Jones is a successful businessman with cool gadgets and a hot wife, Mrs. Jones - usually dressed in fancy labels from head to toe. Their son and daughter rule the school and they are the envy of their neighbours, but everything is not as perfect as it seems. ‘The Joneses’ is meant to be satirical, yet the story ends up tailing off into simply another predictable love story. Verdict: good for shopping-addicts.
The Open Road Drama, Comedy. Writer/Director: Michael Meredith. Cast: Justin Timberlake, Jeff Bridges, Ted Danson, Harry Dean Stanton, Mary Steenburgen, Kate Mara. Low-key, low budget, and low profile, ‘The Open Road’ is another big step for Justin Timberlake from popidol to star of the big screen. This time, he is paired with the great Jeff Bridges who dominates the story simply by not trying to dominate it. These two gentlemen make the father-and-son road trip movie all the more charming. As Carlton Garrett, a mediocre baseball player, Timberlake is sent by his ill mother to pick up his father - baseball legend Kyle Garrett. They haven’t spoken for almost five years. Accompanied by his girlfriend Lucy (Kate Mara), Carlton takes a road trip to bring daddy home along roads that many have traveled before. Yes, every twist and turn is predictable, and there won’t be any surprises in the movie, but the simple yet charming performances more than justify the ticket price.

Cindy Suryadji: A Different Take on Beauty June 3 marked the debut of up and coming makeup artist Cindy Suryadji, as she presented a short movie screening and photo exhibition entitled ‘Saigner a Blanc’ at Four Seasons Hotel. The FX Poetic Video art was directed by Iqbal Rais, produced by Cindy herself, and the exhibition a collaboration with photographer Arseto Adiputra. Cindy Suryadji was educated at the Institut Technique du Maquillage, Forum Makeup, Ecole Internationale de Coiffure in Paris, France where she studied all aspects of the art of makeup ranging from beauty, fashion, theater, corrective, re-looking, special effects, face and body painting. Cindy is fascinated with the transformation of all things human. Dividing her time between Paris and Indonesia, her experiences include Paris fashion shows, weddings, French télés and movies, Japanese fashion shoots and magazine editorials. Cindy was also a part of the makeup artist team that launched the premier line of Calvin Klein beauty products in France, and had the privilege of working as a chef maquilleuse and casting director for one of the shows in the 2010 spring/summer haute couture Paris Fashion Week. As I watched the video and looked closer at the photo exhibitions, I realized that Cindy Suryadji has a rather unique take on makeup, compared to other Indonesian makeup artists. We are accustomed to seeing glamorous and classically beautiful makeup, but Cindy’s work is darker, more sinister and makes you question what it is that defines ‘beauty’. Intrigued, I decided to have a little chat with this trilingual artist.

What made you choose a career in makeup? How did you get started? Actually it was a huge struggle, because my parents didn’t agree with me choosing this path at all. It started out as an obsession at university. It’s actually a funny story, I started having “adult acne” you could say. People usually have it during puberty, so out of panic, I started frantically looking for products to diminish and cover them, so from there I found the passion for all these beauty products and makeup from many different brands! Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore, so I left my career as an art dealer in Paris to study makeup formally for 2 years. It was a challenge, because due to this choice I was cut off completely from all my privileges from my father and had to move to a tiny apartment and sell some of my belongings (bags, etc) to pay for school. What would you say your makeup style is? Hmm.. since I’m a fashion junkie myself, I think I love experimenting with all different types of makeup. But I think I’m more of an edgy couture type of makeup artist. I like the European style of makeup, where simplicity is beautiful. I have a personal quote close to heart, “Less makeup doesn’t mean less beautiful”.
I love it when girls can showcase some of their beautiful features; even models are never perfect looking I think. Like me for example, I feel like my nose is not so pretty, and I also have some blemishes so I concentrate on correcting my skin, and keep the focus of my makeup on my eyes. Just by doing that I can start in the morning and go about my day feeling confident! And I can’t stress this enough: your most quirky and awkward feature is usually what makes you beautiful and different! But I’d have to say I’m also a couture theatrical makeup artist, examples could be easily portrayed in styles such as Pat McGrath’s (every year) Dior’s and Galliano’s couture shows. Not to say that I have the same exact style, but maybe more or less in the same category.
What do you hope to achieve in your career? Of course, everyone dreams big. I would love to eventually venture out more into maybe producing (films, TV shows) but most challenging is I think that my style of makeup is still uncommon here, so I’m still trying to see how my style can contribute to Indonesia’s makeup industry. It definitely would be a great achievement for me if I can somehow break down the tough barriers of this makeup world, and have my particular/ specific style of makeup be accepted or even well appreciated. Affi Assegaf, Editor of www.fashionesedaily.com - style & beauty with attitude.
Your photo exhibition showcased a different side of makeup, not the pretty, glamorous makeup that most Indonesians are accustomed to, but “darker”. Do tell us the story behind the concept. Maybe I’m also a dark person inside hahaha. There is a tiny message too there, that blood doesn’t mean scary, masky pasty makeup doesn’t mean ‘lenong’, and face transformation doesn’t mean monster. But I did choose the red line for all the photos: Blood. Not to say I’m morbid and I like blood, but in this case I have a newfound fascination with the makeup, how many different types of fake blood out there, and how many things you can do with it. With the first two makeup jobs, I used face painting on Marsha’s face. I’m here to introduce a different side of face painting. The ones we’ve seen so far showed face painting to be very complicated, carnival-y, or even for kids, like tigers, bees, butterflies with too many strokes. I wanted to show my style where face painting can be simple but still artsy and beautiful. Even if she cries blood, she doesn’t look like a ghost or look wounded, right? With Camelia Malik’s makeup, it’s just my own version of a modern geisha.. but I added glitter so that it looks a bit more couture, and just something different. Also I had fun transforming her into a totally different person, here is where “edgy couture” comes to play. For the twins, of course it’s simply the special FX makeup particularly for films, action, and horror. And for the ones with my parents, it’s definitely about theatrical makeup (human transformation), maybe more for stage performances. But how fun it is to create different characters with the art of makeup. I loveeee!

ashion and football? Why yes. These two worlds actually have closer links than you might think. If you’ve been drooling over any advertisements for Calvin Klein or Giorgio Armani underwear lately, you most likely know that some of these football stars have been featured as models. The oh-so-dreamy Cristiano Ronaldo was recently signed by Giorgio Armani to model in ad campaigns for Emporio Armani underwear and Armani jeans. Not forgetting of course that David Beckham and wife, Victoria, have both walked the runway of the same designer. Swedish player, Freddie Ljungberg, has modeled for CK Underwear as well as Nike, Proctor & Gamble and L’Oreal. Calvin Klein also featured Japanese soccer star Hidetoshi Nakata in his racy X men’s underwear ad campaigns. Nakata has often been seen sitting on the front-rows of major fashion shows.
Fashion AND Football? Affi Assegaf, Editor of www.fashionesedaily. com – Style & Beauty with Attitude
Apart from underwear modeling contracts, these soccer stars have also had endorsements from many highend designers and luxury brands. Italian goalkeeper C a r l o Cudicini briefly modeled for Brit designer Vivienne Westwood. Louis Vuitton featured Argentina’s Diego Maradona, France’s Zinedine Zidane and Brazil’s Pele for an advertising campaign for its canvas travel bags that debuted just before The World Cup. Vuitton even provided the case to carry the World Cup trophy from Italy to South Africa, and they have reportedly had a contract knocked up for the same thing in 2014. Dolce & Gabbana have even created a new underwear line for summer called Calcio, meaning soccer in Italian! The ad portrayed Antonio Di Natale, Vincenzo Laquinta, Claudio Marchisio, Federico Marchetti and Domenico Criscito from the Italian team, with nothing more than a pair of briefs *sigh*. The list goes on and on, and apparently the soccer players aren’t the only ones who have eyes for style! Check out the photo of Joachim Löw, head coach of German team wearing the Tod’s My Colors Bracelet during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa quarter final match between Argentina and Germany. The German soccer team made a special order of My Colours for both the players and the management to accompany and bring luck to their challenge in South Africa. Sadly, these bracelets didn’t help to secure Germany’s place in the final.

PURSUING THE IDEALS
So when did you start taking an interest in art? I’ve always been interested in art, ever since I was a child. I was brought up in an art loving family and was encouraged to develop my appetite for drawing as a kid. I started when I was seven years old and studied paintings in various art courses and enrolled in many school art competitions - winning many of them. My childhood was very conducive to this interest of mine and my family has always been the main supporter of it. I started taking art more seriously in 1999, starting with a naturalist style of painting at first, then with my further understanding of techniques I found that my style developed into realism and later on in 2007, I tried my hand at video installation art.
Krishna Tjitrosoemarto, one of the few video installation artists in Indonesia talks to TBJ about his art, aspirations, inspirations, and why he needs to sacrifice few priorities for the sake of this yet-to-be-appreciated artform.
From painting to video art installation. Seems quite a shift. What made you change your medium of expression? Well, I’ve always had this fascination with moving visuals. They are dynamic, diverse and have more breadth. I feel I can express myself more in this medium. But initially it was nothing serious, I was just trying to poke into something I’ve always been

fascinated by, until one time I had a job where I had to work a lot on video and learned a great deal about making a video. This is what got my attraction to video art going, and I decided to explore it further. Ok, so what differentiates video art and regular cinematography? I would imagine both are pretty much the same? The difference lies in the spirit. The basic intention of cinema is commercial, which isn’t so with video art. It is more idealistic in expressing the artist’s point of view. In this type of art form, the challenge is to explore, and to an extent, defy the common rules of cinematography. It intends to break through and find new ways of creating perspective in moving visuals. It is more progressive. That sounds liberating. In that case, where do you draw your inspiration from? There’s nothing fancy about it. It’s very simple; I draw most of my inspiration from our natural surroundings. From nature, people, and just everyday happenings. I think the closer we are with our object of creation, the more we’ll be able to create a more intimate bonding with it. When we become part of it, I feel like it gives more depth. This sounds very idealistic and conceptual. Does the Indonesian public appreciate this kind of art form?
082 | beatmag.com
Well, that one is still up for debate. Video art has yet to develop here. The public is still in the ‘wait and see’ mode. And furthermore, we lack the events that can feature video installation art in a comprehensive way to the public. So it still suffers from lack of awareness. To that extent, this type of art form still needs a lot of sacrifices and investment from the artists. Do you have any idol that you look up to? Matthew Barney. He’s an American video artist and choreographer. I admire the sensibility in his artworks, his works also have influenced today’s cinema. He also makes independent and idealistic art movies. Is that what you see yourself doing in the future? Yeah, in the future I plan to do that myself. But further, I want to be able to merge these various art forms from performing arts including choreography, to visual arts and many others. Break their boundaries to form a new kind of art form. I think that’d be really exciting.

C
emara 6 Gallery was founded in 1993 by a woman whose works are very much respected on the Indonesian art scene. Poet, philosopher, art historian and human rights activist, Prof. Dr. Toety Herati N Roosseno is certainly one busy woman. The gallery boasts an intimate and artistic Javanese feel, and serves as a multi function art venue that houses a main exhibition hall, and a back yard frequently used to hold art and cultural activities and discussions, video art presentations, performances, poetry readings and other cultural activities. Adjacent to the gallery are the very components that give the unique touch to it - a small cozy café and an intimate boutique home stay. Cemara 6 Gallery focuses on promoting emerging artists through group and solo exhibitions, and emphasizes the importance of cultural exchange and international networking. The gallery has been actively organizing and participating in international art exhibitions in The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Paris, Canada, Bosnia Herzegovina, Japan, Korea and Singapore. The Cemara 6 Gallery programs have predominantly been conceived to bridge the relations between art and society. It aims to be the medium for anyone to express his or her ideas openly, therefore facilitating intellectual freedom. In 1996, the Gallery coordinated a cultural exchange program including a process oriented workshop and a group exhibition of Indonesian and Dutch artists, co-organized by FINED (Forum Indonesia Nederland) and FNI (Forum Nederland Indonesia)
at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. In the same year, Cemara 6 Gallery also coordinated the Indonesian pavilion ‘Modernity and Memories, Recent Works from the Islamic World’ at the Venice Biennale, which was organized by The Rockefeller Foundation and the Jakarta Foundation for the Arts. The Cemara 6 Gallery also has a private collection of works by famous Indonesian artists, collected through the years by its founder Prof. Dr. Toety Heraty, featuring a permanent collection of more than 60 Indonesian well-known artists such as Basoeki Abdullah, Affandi, Moctar Apin, Srihandi Soedarsono, and Popo Iskandar. There is also a special room with around 50 paintings by Salim, a well-known and respected Indonesian painter who has spent most of his life in Paris. This private collection was shown in 1995, in an exhibition titled ‘Choices of the Heart, Modern Indonesian Paintings from Toety Heraty’s Collection’ at the Museum Voor Volkenkunde in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It is indeed hard to get away from the success achieved by Cemara 6 Gallery today and equally difficult to forget the fact that it has got to where it is today due to the vision of Toety Herati, the founder and the driving force behind it. The 32nd Bali Kite Festival The Bali Kite Festival is an annual international kite festival held in July around the Padang Galak and Sanur Beach area. This year the event will be held between the 23rd to the 25th of July, and like years before will feature massive traditional kites reaching sizes of up to 4 meters wide and 10 meters long in the shapes of fishes, birds and leaves - all handmade by the many banjars from all over Bali. The event has its origins as a seasonal religious festival intended to send a message to the Hindu Gods for abundant crops and harvests. As time has progressed, the traditional kite flying has grown into a competition of sorts with each type of traditional kite having its own competition, and heats of 10 teams vying for the best launch and longest flight. A competition is also held for ‘new creation’ kites, which may include detailed three-dimensional figures representing Hindu Gods, and sponsored kites. For more information on the event visit the website www.balikitefestival.com.

Think you’re the only one trying to look better for the August high season? Think again. Several clubs around town are getting a face-lift. If you’ve passed through Kuta lately you may have noticed that the front of Hard Rock Café has some construction going on. Before the end of July the live music venue will be sporting a new exterior look with a new balcony lounge overlooking the beach. Another club that recently completed its makeover is the Bounty over on Legian street. The venue has now stretched onto the sidewalk making it more visible for clubbers passing by. A couple of the major changes at Bounty include a revamp of the interior lighting and DJ booth. The remodeled dance floor is slightly raised to form a kind of stage, which is sure to attract more clubbers who like to show off their moves.

Fischerspooner Not your average button pushers…
As opposed to spinning other people’s tracks and rising to fame behind a CDJ play button, Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner have gained attention for their unique fusion of original music, choreography, fashion, film and photography. From art galleries to concert halls, television to radio, these lads have been squeezing their passion into the minds of many and now they’re on the way to Bali to give us a taste of their sounds…
Hu’u wednesday 28 JULY 10PM How, where, and when did the two of you meet? Warren and I met in a video art class at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. We were both very outspoken and had similar disdain for the rest of the students and their ideas. After that though, we moved in very different directions. He became a film director for TV commercials and I became an actor in an experimental theater group. We reconnected many years later in NYC and started working on a film project. Out of that we stumbled upon a song idea that turned into a performance. It was from this kernel that we continued to build our pop/punk/ art fantasy. We weren’t interested in the music world and we have never considered ourselves a band. It has always been a very flexible project about entertainment and art. Initially we only worked in the gallery system and we had no intentions of participating in the music business.

And these days? How would you define your direction? We just make what we like. We work very hard to satisfy our own ears and eyes. When you love what you make it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. I like to live and work from this place of strength. Any personal favourites from your latest album release ‘Entertainment’? That’s difficult and it changes all the time. I love ‘In A Modern World’, I love ‘Amuse Bouche’, I love ‘The Best Revenge’, I love ‘Money Can’t Dance’, I love ‘Supply and Demand’, I love ‘Door Train Home’, I love ‘Fascinating’....... What’s left? That’s most of the album!

onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic Fischerspooner are predominantly labeled as ‘electroclash’ or ‘electropop’; is this a term you would use personally? We were making music and performances and images long before there was a name for what we did. We started on the idea in 1998. The term ‘electroclash’ was coined in 2001. So the name didn’t define us. We already had a clear idea of who we were and what we did. Unfortunately once the name was coined and the genre was defined there was a flood of rather lacklustre artists. There were certain people that kinda sold out the style and ruined the fun for everyone. But I never cared. We are always changing and growing and moving, we do what do and we keep doing it! Tell us about your label, FS Studios? Well, we have only released material from FS on this label so the philosophy has always been the same as what we make. It is a moniker for us to do what we do without any outside influence. A direct relationship between our work and our fans.
Laptop with CD Serato. It is the lightest and easiest thing to travel with. Do you download music without paying? Yes. What projects are on the horizon for you? A solo rock album, a fitness program, a photo exhibition, a book, a documentary and a feature film. What can we expect from your upcoming Bali gig? It is NOT a live show. So there really isn’t any of that theatrical stuff. It is just us playing music that we are into. Very simple and straightforward. BUT, I would love to bring the full show to Indonesia one day. We have never performed in Asia EVER, which has always confused me. So many people tell me that it would be a huge success! But it has just never happened. Maybe next time.
Your album Entertainment’s iTunes bonus track, ‘Fascinating’, is a cover of an unreleased R.E.M. song; Why R.E.M.? Michael Stipe is a longtime friend of mine. He said he had a song he wanted to give me. They had made an electronic version but it was never heard. He felt we would make a cool version and that the lyrical content lent itself to our style. We always have one cover on our albums. This was a fun and cool song to add to our roster. Would you say that New York City as an artistic landscape brings its own influence to your music? I am a citizen of the world. I am influenced by lots of things, not just music. I love to live and work in NYC but I really bring all of my experiences home from all over the world. What is your ‘off to the loo’ track? We just pee in bottles behind the mixer. We never leave the decks. Vinyl, CD or laptop?

H
undreds of hopeful surfers converged on the shores of Kuta Beach in front of Limoncello Restaurant on the 17th of July to participate in the ‘Red Bull Heli Surf’ competition event. Three lucky participants strong enough to paddle their way to the designated spot were immediately chopper-lifted to the legendary surf spot of G-Land in East Java, accompanied by Red Bull’s Australian pro surfer Ross Clarke-Jones. The competition was open to anyone and everyone strong or fast (or maybe crazy) enough to paddle their surfboards the distance of 350 meters from the shore to a floating buoy, battling riptides and nudging other participants out the way to grab one of the three winning shirts and be swept off in a helicopter to G-Land. The first ever Red Bull Heli Surf was held in Australia in 2008, with two more competitions having followed. Newer rules restricting the board size and harsher punishments for roughhousing have been introduced, with mystery prizes only revealed when winners reached their destination, but this time round participants already knew what was up for grabs (which was the helicopter trip). Being the first competition of its kind held in Bali, the collection of participants ranging from locals and international surfers plus a few lifeguards were all enthusiastic to prove who was the fastest paddler. In the end the three lucky winners who made it to the buoy were fished out of the water by a speedboat before being whipped off to the Red Bull chopper. With nothing but the clothes on their backs and surfboards in hand, the three winners were immediately jetted off to G-land for a once-ina-lifetime experience surfing the legendary left-hand waves of Grajagan.

Stadium Cafe & Flapjaks Sanur Jl. Cemara #7, Sanur T: 287882
Hugely successful Kuta institutions Stadium Cafe and Flapjaks have been pulling in the punters with big portions, big screens and big fun for some time now. This week Dan Ashcroft packs up his dessert spoon to check out the newlyopened branch in Sanur...
T
here are two kinds of people in this world; those with a sweet tooth, and those without. As a person possessing an almost unhealthy obsession with all things sugary (only almost), I most definitely fall into the former category. Imagine my excitement then, upon hearing that I would be checking out a restaurant that has a menu almost entirely made up of desserts… Combining two Kuta favourites under one roof, the Rama Restaurant group have taken 94 beatmag.com 094| |beatmag.com
a Stadium Café and a Flapjaks, and fused them together to bring a new level of entertainment to sleepy Sanur. The aim is to inject a bit more life into the area without going as far as a Kuta-style club pumping out music until the wee hours. Catering nicely to sports fans looking to support their team as well as folks who are after hearty, American-style food, Stadium Café boasts a huge screen, huge menu and equally huge portions in a fun atmosphere somewhere
between a quirky bar and your own living room. Sharing the floor space with Stadium, Flapjaks is unique in Bali as not so much a restaurant but an outlet specialising in light bites, gelato, crepes, waffles, pancakes and all sorts of other sugary treats for people looking for something a little more decadent. On arrival I seek out a comfy spot on the outside decking area and meet with Group Chef Dicky and Sous Chef Gusde (formerly of Mago & Paradiso) who proudly tell me that Flapjaks has 55 different flavours of home-made gelato on offer. An Italian invention, gelato differs from ice cream in that it has a lower butterfat content and the sugar content is balanced so as to provide a natural anti-freeze, preventing it from going as solid as ice cream once in the freezer. The proof, they say, is in
Gusde have worked hard on to get right. Next up on the sweet journey is a blueberry and cheese waffle served as either a half round (39k++) or full round (57k++). It’s a Flapjaks favourite with the real blueberry acidity of the sauce complemented perfectly by creamy dessert-style cheese. All this is starting to get a bit much and I take a breather over a fruity strawberry smoothie (short 35k++, big man 42k++) and wait for the imminent pancake arrival. A sure-fire local hit, the green pandan pancakes with coconut gelato and jackfruit (35k++/44k++) go down exceptionally well, although by this stage I’m seriously struggling – as much as I could sit all day trying everything off the menu I consider my poor stomach (not to mention my teeth) and call it a day. I do however manage to squeeze in an Oreo iced coffee
the pudding and before long the signature mixed fruits gelato set is deftly placed in front of us. Available in two sizes; short (49k++) and big man (95++), it contains chopped fresh fruits, pistachio nuts, five scoops of gelato (choice of flavours), waffle and sauce all piled high in a massive oversized dessert glass. I can say from experience that this dish should not be approached without a gang of mates in tow to dig in and help out – it’s absolutely humungous and easily big enough for 4-5 people to share. While the photographer frantically tries to get the shot before it melts too much, I check out the warm strawberry crepe (45k++) dotted with fresh Bedugal strawberries and whipped cream with a healthy scoop of (obviously) strawberry gelato. As with the waffles and pancakes to follow, the crepe has a European style to it with a perfect balance of crispiness and flavour – something Dicky and
(38k++/41k++) while Dicky explains that every pancake, crepe and waffle dish is available with an alcoholic option. For an extra 12k a serving of Bailey’s, rum and raisin or Kahlua gelato (made with real spirits) can be added to the order to Irish it up a little. Feeling like a balloon I eventually summon up the power to roll out the door and onto my bike for the ride home, vowing to never even so much as look at a pancake again.... At least until tomorrow when I’ll be finishing off the box of takeaway treats tucked under my arm. With four more outlets planned for Stadium and Flapjaks in Bali, as well as a delivery service on the way, there is surely no better place on the island to get your just desserts. Dan Ashcroft.

uests at the new Twice Diner down on Poppy’s Two were spoiled with a cool night of live acoustic tunes last Sunday night. Some of Bali’s best strummed through a mix of blues, folk and rock to help wash down the weekend along with the evening’s meal. By 10pm it was sing-along time as Jerinx, Dion and Dialog Dini Hari jammed the night away. In another corner a few tattoo artists were decorating canvases that were later sold for charity before Ray D Sky, all the way from Jakarta, finished the night off with a mix of reggae and surf pop. There was a moment of surprise when some of the audience members appeared to jump on stage and tear their clothes off to the beats, before it became apparent that it was all part of the show.
