ith the arrival of the fasting month of Ramadhan, nearly all forms of nocturnal activities seem to have come to a stand still for a while. We had to dig deep (and we do mean deep) searching for any form of entertainment that we could inform the readers about. Working on the knowledge that many of you will be rushing from work to not be caught in afternoon rush hour, searching for a nice place to break your fast, we have recommended some places you can visit in our food section and some of these places not only serve food but will have live performances to entertain while you dine. Not only has the night life been affected by Ramadhan, but Indonesia’s Independence Day has also been hit, seeing many festivities related to the nation’s birthday take a slighter more mellow form of celebrating. For those of you who are still capable of seeing what the nightlife offers during Ramadhan, our lighter version of What’s On will hopefully lead you in the right direction.
D

A few months ago Austrian symphony rock band Edenbridge were scheduled to tour through Jakarta, Solo and Malang, but they sadly had to cancel their performances. Many of their fans took the bad news hard, but not wanting to let their fans down, the band have rescheduled another tour destined for Indonesia and it will hopefully happen sometime in November. Members of Edenbridge, Arne Stockhammer and Sabine Edelsbacher have said their November tour will also be to promote their latest album titled “Solitaire”. Fingers crossed that no problems arise and the tour can continue as planned.

Festival Kalimalang
5
Indonesia’s Independence Day is celebrated in a big way all throughout the nation but no other celebrates the 17th of August quite like the citizens of Kalimalang. Starting off as only a local celebration for people living in the area, the events there have grown into a fully fledged festival full of games with amazing prizes and live performances from unknown and sometimes big name Indonesian artists. Usually running for 3 days, the festival’s main event is the panjat pinang (tower climbing) competition where participants attempt to climb a pole covered in grease to grab prize tickets which range from money to a motorbike. The panjat pinang is also held in other parts of Jakarta, but what makes the one in Kalimalang different than the others is that the pole is situated on the side of a river and the many participants falling into the river end up being the main attraction. No admittance is charged, just head to Kalimalang and join in on the Independence Day activities.
Playground 2010 is Coming After Surya Slim’s Stage Playground press conference a few days ago, the event has been scheduled to fall on the 2nd of October. Only a small number of the lineup of performers has been announced, but the ones comfirmed include The Lightning Seeds, Crystal Waters, Steve Aoki and The Cuban Brothers. Three stages will feature the artists, all with different themes, which have been named Embassy x, Dim Mak, Back In The Days, and Godskitchen Boombox. Concert for The Nation By Erza S.T.
040 | beatmag.com
With an exciting first ten days, filled with classical music concerts and recitals, things will surely slow down this August due to fasting month. Nevertheless, since it’s almost time for our national independence day also, we can still expect to see some great events coming up.
One of my selections for this month is a concert initiated by renowned conductor, Avip Priatna. On August 22nd at the new hall, Aula Simfonia Jakarta, Avip, together with his Jakarta Chamber Orchestra and Batavia Madrigal Singers, is planning to perform a concert called “Simfonia Untuk Bangsa” or “Symphony For The Nation”, featuring young and talented soloists such as soprano Bernadeta Astari, tenor Farman Purnama and pianist Inge M. Buniardi. As a conductor, Avip is one of Indonesia’s best, with a reputation as one of the most accomplished Indonesian conductors in the field of Western Classical Music. He started early in Bogor, where he is originally from and received his first music lessons before continuing his study at the Hochschule for Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien in Vienna, where he gained most of his musical education. He is also known for his effort on bringing Batavia Madrigal Singers to an international level by winning three awards at the Florilege Vocal de Tours in France, 2001, making Batavia Madrigal Singers one of the leading vocal ensembles in Indonesia. For this “Simfonia Untuk Bangsa” concert, Avip is going to collaborate with three interesting young talents whom we have mentioned in previous editions for their solo recitals. Soprano Bernadeta Astari, or Deta to her friends, is one of Indonesia’s best soprano young talents. Her star quality shone through ever since she joined the Indonesian Children’s Choir. She then left Jakarta for Holland in ‘06 to continue her studies as a classical singer at Conservatorium van Utrecht in Netherlands. Shortly after her arrival there, she won 1st prize at the National Final Prinses Christina Concours ‘07 at The Hague. This important result brought her to many concerts and events including The Resident Artist Program under patron of Het Nationale Reisopera. Once every year, Deta returns to
Jakarta and performs. I can hardly wait to see how she has developed her talent this year. It would come as no surprise if she received scholarship support from the Dutch Ministry of Education. Aside from Deta, Avip will also work with Farman Purnama who attended the same institution as Deta to study classical vocals. She began there last August, ‘09, and recently performed in a solo recital with pianist Inge M. Buniardi at Erasmus Huis. Inge herself is one of the most talented young pianists around, who won the Ananda Sukarlan Award 2008 and was recently on the panel for this year’s same award. The program for this concert will have, among others, Beethoven’s famous ‘Leonore Overture’. This rarely performed piece is another genius composition of Beethoven’s, known to have intensely dramatic, full-scale symphonic movements, which are also recognized as the opening of the ‘Fidelio’ opera. With a team like this, Avip will also give tribute to famous Indonesian composers Yazeed Djamin and the late Gesang by playing compositions such as a variation of ‘Sepasang Mata Bola’, ‘Jembatan Merah’ and, of course, the most famous song ‘Bengawan Solo’. Knowing the great team and program that Avip Priatna is going to put together, it seems that there is no reason for us not to feel extremely patriotic by coming to this concert, and we should be proud to have modern heroes like these young talents, who successfully and proudly take Indonesia overseas. See you all there.

Ian Brown A lifetime Speaks for itself
After his voice sang out at the forefront of the Madchester Movement in the 80s and early 90s, it was presumed by some that Stone Roses vocalist Ian Brown would fall away with the band’s break up. Criticism turned into appraisal though, with a self produced and financed album shortly after, leading on to over a decade of solid touring, top selling albums and a score of hit singles. It would be hard to avoid the term ‘rock legend’ when talking of Brown’s achievements, though when it comes to having a chat, he tends to bring everything back to a very human level. Obviously some humans were born to entertain others…
At the 2006 NME awards, you were presented with the "Godlike Genius" award and in 2007 given the Q "Legend" Award; what do you personally feel the most chuffed about achieving and creating when it comes to being handed these labels?
Forget the World Cup, not long ‘til the Premiership kicks off again. What are your predictions for United this season?
I don’t make music for medals or trophies. I'm just happy I am still here and working.
Last year’s ‘My Way’ was apparently inspired by Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album; any other specific inspirations that forged the album’s direction?
It’s been a long time since the golden days of the ‘Madchester’ scene; do you still kick around with any of the key players from back then? Yes, I'm still in touch with most of the boys from then. Shaun Ryder introduced me at my last Manchester show and I stayed in L.A. with Paul Ryder and my sons last year and speak regularly.

If you could head back to the past and have a beer with your 21 year old self, what amazing sprouts of wisdom would you plant in his head to prepare him for the years ahead? It's not where you’re from; it's where you're at. As you rolled with the late 80’s Rave movement and became involved in Northern Soul, all night vigils, individual freedom, a disregard for pointless authority and determination to enjoy the madness seems to have gone with the uniform; did you feel at the time that there were any negative sides to the era that played against the positive? I only recognize the positive! And now that you look back on it do you hold any fresh perspectives on what was taking place at the time?

Sementara itu sebelumnya Stereocase sempat menerbitkan sebuah lagu “penggoda” (teaser) via MySpace, Just Called Life, beberapa waktu silam.
Selebihnya, jika anda penasaran mendengar senandung merdu-maskulin grup yang pekat terpengaruh Incubus, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, & Jamiroquai ini, silakan simak di: www. myspace.com/stereocaseband. akarta-based music collective Stereocase are a fairly new band, founded in 2008. But Fadli (vocals), Iqif (drums), Icad (guitar) and Donny (bass) have just begun to receive wider public attention after winning Best Newcomer at ICEMA (the Indonesia Cutting Edge Music Awards) in July 2010.
Their song, Just Called Life, has already been played heavily on some big radio stations in Jakarta and recently, they announced their plans to get into the studio during fasting month to record a debut album. Check out their original songs on www.myspace.com/stereocaseband, and meanwhile, tune in to 101.4 Trax FM every Friday, to listen to them playing live on air, with a very unusual concept; the station chooses a different theme each and every time Stereocase play. Last week’s quality set was disco, so the band banged out some timeless disco tracks with their very own special rock twist.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story about it? Symphony (Fariz RM) – Trapesium. I was in junior high. I’m a big fan of Fariz RM and I bought it from my friend’s sister. What are your all-time favorite albums and why are they so meaningful to you? I’d say Joni Mitchell - Turbulent Indigo. Listening to this album feels like having a nice conversation with Mitchell. The music is incredibly deep on many layers. Calming vocals from her soul makes me sure that being a musician is the best profession in the world. Another would be Edie Brickell & New Bohemians- Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars - Wild! Brickell proved that you don’t have to have perfect pitch and tune to be a singer. The most important thing is singing from your heart!
What was the worst record you ever purchased? Eeeek… Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Jack Johnson’s wife! Which artist do you choose to start your weekend with? Michael Franti and Spearhead. And to end the weekend? Bob Marley. Cooking for dinner, having a glass of red wine, and listening to Uncle Bob’s stuff is the perfect way to end my weekend! The Black Crowes -The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion brings me back to a lot of Potlot memories and Ben Harper – Welcome to the Cruel World is a must have in the car! Also, Slank – Geenerasi Biru. Great music from 5 brilliant musicians. 15 years after, it still rocks! (Check out the backing vocals on Generasi Biru!

Lagu Jurustandur diajukan menjadi hit single. “Jurustandur No. 18 merupakan refleksi Indonesia

“May Day berarti hari buruh, tapi dalam lagu ini May Day diartikan S.O.S. yaitu meminta pertolongan dimana hak-hak buruh kurang diperhatikan,” tegas Kaka. tentang kondisi sosial yang terjadi di masyarakat.
Slank, arguably the biggest Rock band in Indonesia, have just released their latest album,’ Jurustandur No. 18’, which contains 17 songs. Jurustandur is the short for Maju Terus Pantang Mundur (Keep Moving Forward No Turning Back), while No. 18 is for the number of albums they have released so far. With this latest album, Bimbim (drums), Kaka (vocals), Abdee (guitar), Ridho (guitar), and Ivanka (bass), are still playing Rock ‘n’ Roll, but this time they’re focusing on the easy listening factor, while the lyrics are still about social and environmental issues. For instance, ‘May Day’, is about the unfair treatment by the government of the blue collar workers of Indonesia. Another song, ‘Bola’, criticizes the decline of the standard of Indonesian football. Slank are using a unique strategy to market the album: if you buy their Kaka-designed t-shirt you’ll get an original CD/cassette. They do it this way—the “value added” concept— to cleverly minimize the competition from piracy and illegal downloads. To promote this brand new album, Slank, sponsored by Yamaha, will tour 6 cities after fasting-month. A Barefoot Dream
Ve Handojo is a screenplay writer and the TBJ film critic. Drama, Action. Director: Kim Tae-Gyun. Cast: Park Hee-Sun, Koh Chang-Seok, Lim Won-Hie, Kim Seo-Hyeong, Jo Jin-Ung.
‘A Barefoot Dream’ is based on the true story of an ex-football player, who has failed in running various businesses away from the soccer field. Fate has brought him to East Timor, where he sees barefooted children kicking a ball on a rocky field. He attempts to open a sports store there, selling football shoes to kids, but apparently nobody can afford to buy them. His last sales pitch is a two-month installment plan, landing him in a dusty playground as a coach for a ragged team of 10-year-olds. There begins an experience that will change all their lives forever.
Grown Ups Comedy. Director: Dennis Dugan. Writers: Adam Sandler, Fred Wolf. Cast: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph, Steve Buscemi. Sutradara Dennis Dugan, yang pernah membuat “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” dan “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” memang sudah terbiasa menangani film komedi buat lelaki.

The title is the pun. ‘Grown Ups’ doesn’t just tell a story about men who get older but never wiser, but also about Adam Sandler’s jokes, that have grown stale after all these years. The story is about school buddies who decide to take a Fourth of July weekend after their old basketball coach passes away. Bringing along their wives, and also their childhood memories, what rolls out is a series of tired old jokes mainly about old people, overweight people, vegans, nerds, and even black people. The movie resembles a high school reunion of sorts for the actors; sure, we liked them once, but after all this time, we’ve eventually just grown a little tired of them.
Vampires Suck Comedy. Writers and Directors: Jason Freidberg, Aaron Seltzer. Cast: Jenn Proske, Chris Riggi, Matt Lanter, Devon Kelly, Ken Jeong.
Are you one of those people that just can’t stand the fascination of the ‘Twilight’ saga movies? Well, spoof masters Jason Freidberg and Aaron Seltzer are proving how vampires are just a big joke. Stephenie Meyer can just go and suck it. ‘Vampires Suck’ is a parody of all those teenie vampire movies, specially dedicated to the long suffering people who are related to, or happen to know, a hardcore “Twi-hard”. The phenomenal Ken Jeong of ‘The Hangover’ fame gives a magical performance in the movie, which also features an appearance from Lady Gaga.

y mother is a true Sumatran woman who thinks that cooking is one of the essential skills for women to have. Wait, that is an understatement. Rather, she thinks that any woman who does not know her way around the kitchen is an embarrasment to her family and further to her gender. I, of course, am the polar opposite to this which aggravates my mother to no end. But, nowadays she is more accepting to the fact that I may never cook as well as she does and has stopped bugging me about getting my hands dirty in the kitchen. She has accepted the fact that this daughter of hers is a mere avid lover of food and settles with me being a huge fan of her cooking.

It’s true, I love food and I have this close to terrifying penchant for home-cooked meals, especially after leaving mom’s house to live independently. I think it’s the flavor and aroma of a home cooked meal that always successfully cures my homesickness. So, when I was hit by an episode of homecooked cravings last week, I headed to this chic little restaurant in Kemang that serves a mean Medanese cuisine, Kedai Kak Ani.
with a glass of fresh Es Tebu (sugar cane extract). Without having to wait a long time, the dish arrived on my table. It was the lovely combination of rice and shrimp with fermented soy sauce called taoco, fried salted stingray cooked in Sumatran spicy belado sauce and a bowl of mashed cassava leaf curry. I took one bite and my mind rushed to home with the image of my mom standing in her kitchen humming while cooking dinner. I devoured the Kedai Kak Ani, is a charming restaurant in the food greedily and ordered another dish called corner of Kemang Selatan street, located just Roti Jala (33K), a lacy and net-like pancakes/crepes beside the Italian restaurant, A Tavola. The green dish served with a choice of chicken, beef or lamb painted walls and the old-fashioned double doors curry, to go. was what first caught my attention. It feels fresh and inviting. Behind the pretty white double doors In the middle of my slightly embarassing gorging is a rectangular shaped room dominated with episode (Paul would’ve told me to slow down if he fresh colors. The room feels light and cheerful was with me, but fortunately was not), I noticed and at the same time exudes a friendly familiarity the stylish looking Ibu who turned out to be the that I immediately fell in love with. “Ibu Ani” this restaurant is named for, sitting in the table in front of me. I watched this energetic, The menu is small and selective, consisting of all friendly woman talking to guests like they were authentic Medanese cuisine. I couldn’t make my family, explaining her food with pleasure. I was mind up on what to choose as they all looked captivated. Once again, my mind rushed home equally appetizing. The friendly waitress soon to my mom and the way she treasures her food. infomed me though, that Lontong Sayur Medan I once asked her why her food always tastes far (Rice cakes served in vegetables, cooked in superior than any other food I’ve ever tasted out coconut milk with fried anchovies, peanuts and there, to which she smilingly said “that’s because soybean cake (33.6K) is the crowd’s favorite, but I I’m happy you are home, my darling daughter”. was looking for a more fulfilling rice dish to satisfy Oh, yes. No food is better than mom’s. Although my home-cooked craving belly. I finally opted for this one comes awfully close. the Nasi Campur Medan (28.6K) and paired it beatmag.com | 061

TBJ experiences Vietnam; from the comfort of a Jakarta restaurant seat… An old friend of mine called me earlier this afternoon. I haven’t seen her for a while, and since we share a common love for food, I asked her to meet me for dinner somewhere not too far from her pad and mine, because at that time of day rush hour traffic can be a real pain. We decided to go to Lang Viet, a Vietnamese restaurant at Wijaya Grand Center near Blok M. We chatted about the old times and recent developments in each other’s lives, and she told me about her new job. Hey, that’s a good reason to celebrate! Lang Viet is a nice and cozy Vietnamese café and gallery. We were greeted by servers wearing traditional outfits. The interior is homely, the atmosphere warm, and the service is good. The paintings of life in Vietnam on the wall compliment the wooden furniture well. The place is rather smallish, but they do have two floors of dining area, plus an art gallery on the third. As for the food, we ordered Bo Cuon or Fresh Spring Rolls with Beef (32k) for appetizers. Filled with fresh ingredients, they are bursting with flavors; a good start to our culinary journey. I then ordered a Pho Bo or rice noodle beef soup, probably the most well known of Vietnamese cuisine. The soup comes in three sizes: Small, Large, and Extra Large for 45k, 62k, and 77k, respectively. I opted for the large one. My friend chose the Banh Mi or Vietnamese sandwich at 40k.

The warm broth of the Pho Bo is rich and flavorful. The vermicelli noodles and beef are mixed well with the fresh bean sprouts and mint leaves. I added some lime juice and a little bit of chili paste into the bowl, and voila! I got myself some really nice comfort food! As for the sandwich, it was a good mixture of East and West. The stir-fried beef inside the French baguette exploded with the taste of herbs and spices. We were both happy campers. My friend also tried the Lemon Grass Tea (24k), which comes in a clay teapot and a bamboo cup. The wood seemed to enhance the flavor very nicely. I sampled the cool and refreshing Iced Salted Lemon drink (22k), but we finished our meal with some Ca Phe Su’a Nong, or hot Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. It was as warm and sweet as our reunion. As we finished our conversation, our Blackberries were filled with messages from our other friends, who all wanted to meet us somewhere else that night.Ah, to live in Jakarta...At least we did escape to ‘Vietnam’, just for a little while. Would we go there again? In a heartbeat! There are some tasty Vietnamese desserts with our names on them, ready for our next ‘journey’. And on a sweeter note yet, my friend said, “Let me pick up the tab. I just got a new job!” Nice.

here’s no word to describe Biyan’s Annual Show, which was held last Wednesday, 28 July, other than ‘spectacular’! When I entered the venue, it was as if the audience was transported to a rugged temple somewhere in central Java. I forgot for a moment that I was actually at the Grand Ballroom of Hotel Mulia. Especially when I looked up at the ceiling; it was like I truly was beneath an open sky, lit by thousands of stars. The show opened with traditional music playing, softly accompanying the dancers that came out from the back of the ruined temple, sashaying ever so elegantly. The models suddenly emerged from backstage with their jaw-dropping outfits. Celebrating his 27th year in fashion, Biyan wanted
to show a collection with a touch of melancholy and sentimental feeling, so the title of the collection - ‘As Time Goes By’ – was selected, to show a celebration of heritage and traditions. The collection is inspired by royal and cultural traditional costumes because they immediately portray the uniqueness and character, as well as the strength, of that culture. Biyan said he wanted to create something that, although giving the impression of being amazingly old, has a surprisingly modern feel to it. His signature style could be seen immediately through the earthy and soft tones, the feminine, flowing style, and lots of beading, sequins and
Swarovski crystals, which adorned the collection. There were many unstructured pieces that still maintained their femininity. Biyan also showed us another dimension to this season’s style through his eyes: accentuated shoulders and epaulettes constructed by beads; military green, that has undergone sleek surgery through the selection of material, which is flowing combined with heavy beading; outerwear that looked so grand that you wished you could go everywhere overdressed. There was this one jacket that I really fell in love with. Apparently it was inspired by the structure of a Javanese traditional costume, known as beskap.
Biyan translated the Javanese beskap into a modern jacket through the choice of textiles, ornaments adorning the material and patchwork lame-jacquard made from different materials and thicknesses, all thrown into the same piece. And there’s nothing old at all about the evening dresses he made with ikat and songket. All the models walked the runway with the same MaryJane wedges, made from different materials though barely different detailing. Maria Agnes gets two thumbs up; she strutted nonchalantly down the runway in the extra high heels while the other models looked a little bit worried. A true professional!

Pond’s Pure White I
f you spot a new cleanser with a glossy black packaging among the white, girly-looking Pond’s products on the shelves, no, you’re not looking at Pond’s for Men (although men can definitely use it too). You’re most probably looking at Pond’s newest facial foam, POND’S Pure White with activated carbon. Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal, is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous for absorption and chemical reactions. The main function of activated carbon is to soak up a variety of chemical compounds, odours and colours. Activated carbon can also serve to control the humidity in the air. These properties have formed the basis for the new Pond’s cream. Lestri Fajrinia, a rep for Unilever Research and Development Team says: “The Activated Carbon contained in the POND’S Pure White is made from the best charcoal powder, which is specifically used for beauty products. Besides removing impurities, it can also work as a scrub,” and Arief Tjakraamidjaja, POND’S Brand Manager, said that Activated Carbon contained in the POND’S Pure White is proven to be able to absorb and take away all impurities, including makeup, down to the smallest pores. After trying out this product, I have to admit that it’s a pretty good cleanser. It’s very foamy, does not cause irritation, and I found that it takes off all my makeup quite well without drying my skin. This product also contains humectant, which is a substance that attracts water to the skin, which explains why my face feels so soft and moist after using this facial wash. art SCOOP/CULTURE Mobius Strip – Song E Yoon’s Solo Exhibition Song E Yoon’s works lead her to create and convey the original words and culture of her existence. She aims to create a new world of quivering power and spirit, as she believes that the most powerful communicational resources beyond the digital limit as humans, lies in the indeterminacy of our existence. This created quiver no longer follows given directions; the viewers set up the direction by themselves. Therefore, the new creation is due to the viewer’s transformation of the form. Yoon likes to cause other people to act as the creator, putting meaning and a new output into the aesthetic. If any of this makes any divine sense to you at all you should probably check out the Exhibition which is open for viewing until August 25 at Puri Art Gallery Jakarta Art District #5 Grand Indonesia Shopping Town East Mall – LG Jl. Thamrin 1, Jakarta - Indonesia.
Solo Sculpture of Sunarso & Book Launch Edhi Sunarso, 78 years old, is the first modern Indonesian sculptor to cast his works in metal. He began his career in the art of stone and wood carving at the Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Painters’ Studio), but then began to develop sculpture using the metal casting technique. Although he has made numerous personal pieces, he is better known as a sculptor of public art. His works of public art are spread out, mainly in Jakarta, including the sculptures “Selamat Datang”, “Pembebasan Irian Barat”, “Dirgantara”, and the diorama at the National Monument. His solo exhibition titled “Monument“ can be viewed in Salihara Gallery from August 14th to 28th at Jl. Jl.Salihara No.16 Pasar Minggu, Jakarta Selatan 12520. Tel (021) 789 1202.
Apple Works Deddy Paw, 46, is a contemporary Indonesian artist, who has been using apples as metaphors since 2003 and is renowned for his apple paintings. In the recent exhibition in Bazaar Art World Jakarta, Deddy has beautifully merged apple symbolism with his exceptional skill of painting hyper-realistic images and his precision in creating three dimensional objects. The apple in his painting is no longer an object, but rather, becomes a metaphor; a message subtly conveyed about the artist’s broad view of life, or a way to tell stories from different perspectives. Deddy’s artworks can be viewed at Mall Art at Bazaar Art Jakarta 2010 in Pacific Place Mall until August 15th 2010.

POETIC TRUTH
F
aith is commonly one of the main inspirations in literature. Often, Indonesian writers are moved by the truth religion offers, but their work is not always controlled by the authority of religion. Some poets revive their religious backgrounds as natural material for their poems, without making the pretense of preaching. Their religious vocabulary then, is more of a resource than dogma. In the program for this year’s fasting month of Ramadan, Komunitas Salihara presents a poetry reading by four leading Indonesian poets who work with the religious traditions in which they were born and raised, without making their literature bow to religious commands. Acep Zamzam Noor was born into the family who run the Pondok Pesantren Cipasung, Tasikmalaya, West Java. After graduating from high school within the Pesantren community, he continued his studies in the Painting Department of the School of Art and Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology. He has traveled widely as a painter and writer. Acep is known for his facility in drawing themes from urban as well as pesantren life, from the religious as well as the secular. D Zawawi Imron was educated in the Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School) during the colonial era and then continued in the Pesantren Lambicabbi, Gapura, Sumenep. His collection of poetry Bulan Tertusik Ilalang inspired director Garin Nugroho’s
film with the same title. He has received awards for his work, which is deeply Islamic without losing its sense of humor. Joko Pinurbo attended school as a pastoral candidate at the Seminari Menengah Mertoyudan, Magelang. He continued his studies at IKIP Sanata Dharma Yogyakarta in the Department of Language Education and Indonesian Literature. Jokpin’s poetry is full of a religious atmosphere in intimate and domestic spaces, being there with a sense of irony. Multi-talented artist Remy Sylado is known as a leader of the “Puisi Mbeling” movement of the 70s, a movement that rebelled against the existing aesthetic values of the time. He learned the languages of the scriptures—Arabic, Hebrew and Greek—in Seminari Theologia Baptis Semarang, which led to his understanding of religious texts. Nonetheless, labels like ‘naughty’ and ‘rebellious’ always stick with his writings in which he works with religious vocabulary. The readings will be performed in Indonesian. Poetry Reading by Acep Zamzam Noor, D Zawawi Imron, Joko Pinurbo, Remy Sylado is open to the public on Thursday, August 19, 8pm at Teater Salihara, Jl.Salihara No.16 Pasar Minggu, Jakarta Selatan. Tel (021) 789 1202. Registration by 18 August to: dita@salihara.org

VANESS
RT LINK
V
anessa Art Link is an extended operation of Vanessa Art House, founded in 2002 by Vanessa Sutanto, the woman whose mission is to bring the world of fine art to Indonesia and vice versa. Vanessa Art Link itself was established in 2007 in an effort to move away from the limitation of a gallery and is aiming to open Indonesian arts to the wider scope of international audiences. Following up the mission, she opened a 900 square meter two storey gallery of the same name in Beijing, and ever since, the gallery has hosted numerous joint exhibitions of top Indonesian and Chinese artists.

The two galleries have different fields of specialization. Vanessa Art Link focuses on promoting Asian Contemporary Art, whereas Vanessa Art House exhibits more the works of local and regional artists. The gallery wishes to link the various points of art activity in the world, thus contributing to an exciting exchange and development of the art scene, to the benefit of all art lovers in Indonesia. Vanessa Art Link is located conveniently in Dharmawangsa, an affluent area in Jakarta, as well as more than 300 square meters of columnless exhibition space at the main lobby of Graha MIK in the Kuningan area, and is committed to presenting high quality fine art and promoting cultural exchange between the local and foreign artists, providing a conducive learning medium for them.
Constant dialog with the artists, art curators and collectors has always been an important element in Vanessa Art Link’s operations. Vanessa Art Link is one of the galleries housed in Grand Indonesia East Mall as part of the Jakarta Art District, a starting point to get the art world acquainted with mall patrons, therefore bringing art closer to the public. Jakarta Art District was opened last February and serves as a common ground for the participating galleries to showcase their collections. Vanessa said earning displays at malls is a sign of a changing lifestyle, which consequently would change the art style in turn. The upcoming solo exhibition by Mangu Putra titled “Teater Rakyat will be held in the gallery from August 19 to August 31.

Monumental Statue Needs a Home
3
Next time you’re giving directions to the airport you may need to revise your landmarks. The well-known Dewa Rucci monument on Kuta’s Simpang Siur intersection will soon be moved to make way for a new overpass, planned for construction in order to ease the pressure valve of traffic jams that are congesting the roads these days. The removal of the landmark will allow the local government to create a straight roadway reducing the need for land acquisition for the project’s completion. The governor has stated that he is inclined to move the statue somewhere to the north, creating a small park area surrounded by large trees. Alternatively, the statue could also be placed behind the lighted notice board recently installed at the intersection. We’ve also been warned that in order to build the overpass, we should expect at least a year of worse delays on the road. Yep. Purchasing a helicopter may be the best option…

SURF feature
The Rip Curl Cup Invitational 2010 It seems like five minutes since the last Rip Curl Cup, but it’s that time of year once again. Held at the stunningly picturesque Padang Padang beach, the world-class waves of this break are currently keeping both the sixteen Indonesian and sixteen international surfers on tenterhooks, as they wait for the one swell-one day contest to kick off. A 5-week waiting period has been set aside by Rip Curl with the slogan “When it’s on, it’s on”, and as soon as the next swell is forecast, all competitors and spectators alike will have 24 hours to get themselves down to the Bukit. It’s the 7th anniversary of the Rip Curl Cup Invitational this year, making it the longestrunning surfing comp in Indonesia, and the only ISC

Tour event that pits top international surfers up against Indonesia’s best. Eight heats will feature two Indonesian and two international competitors, and the twist to 2010 is a ‘mystery surfer’, who is yet to be named, but who was drawn on Sunday 25th July against current ISC Tour’s leader, Pepen Hendrik: “It could be someone really heavy,” Hendrik said. “If they are leaving one spot in the contest open, it’s probably for a really good surfer. I’ll just have to wait and see.” With a prize of Rp. 65 million up for the offing, we’re half tempted to grab our rash vests and boards and give it a bash ourselves... Ducking out of work as usual, Dan Ashcroft satisfies his sweet tooth yet again with a light lunch and gelato fix at Delicioso restaurant…
Delicioso Delicioso @ Seminyak
086 | beatmag.com
F
ood reviews are usually a reasonably fancy affair; a trip to a restaurant and a formal sit-down meal together with chefs, managers or PR staff. This week however, I decided to go for something a little simpler. Catering for both the tourist and expat markets, Delicioso is perfectly located in the forecourt of Bintang Supermarket. It’s ideal for holiday-makers looking for light bites, gelato, or coffee and cake after a whizz-round the aisles at Bintang, and also for expat types looking for a quick lunch that’s not too far away from the office – exactly what I’m looking for on a busy Monday at work.
Located right opposite the entrance to Bintang, Delicioso has a welcoming, unpretentious feel with friendly staff and quiet atmosphere. The air-conditioned interior is bright and homely, and provides a great place to unwind over simple, delicious food with great prices. It’s open everyday between 7.30am and 9.30pm for breakfast, lunch and of course, plenty of gelato-y frozen treats. Breakfast is a decidedly European affair, with plenty of cereal and muesli offerings as well as croissants, cakes and a few light sandwiches to get you ready for the day ahead. Salads range from the special smoked beef and mozzarella to the mixed Mediterranean salad with tuna, egg, olives and mayo. Moving into lunch territory, a huge range of sandwiches and Panini are available on a choice of homemade freshly baked breads, including baguettes, ciabatta and rye. Being particularly hungry I plumped for the mozzarella and tomato double deck baguette with basil and oregano (32k) together with a freshly squeezed orange juice (24k). The bread is to die for – soft, fresh and warmed slightly – just as it should be. Not too long ago Bali was something of a barren wilderness in terms of obtaining a decent loaf, but thanks to places like Delicioso it seems that all this is changing.
Delicioso Gelato (48k) with the three scoops of gelato accompanied by whipped cream, a dash of liqueur and Italian biscuit – it doesn’t touch the sides as I polish it off quick smart in time to grab a takeaway latte (26k) and get back to work (I do actually do ‘proper’ work – it’s not all cakes and Gelato, honestly). If like me you enjoy a cold treat on a hot day, make sure to seek out Delicioso’s other two Gelato stalls located on Jl Padma Street and inside Waterbom Park in Tuban – oh and don’t forget to ask one of the staff for a Delicioso stamp card. Each time you buy something you’ll get a stamp, and once you hit ten stamps (in the same category) it can be redeemed for a free item. Mine’s already filling up fast… Dan Ashcroft
The main reason for the exceptional quality of the bread is down to parent company Ixora Cakes, based further up the road in Seminyak. This fully equipped bakery has been churning out top-notch European style breads, cakes, sweets, muffins, brownies and all manner of other yummy treats for some time now to a huge range of clients all over Bali. Selling wholesale to restaurants and villas as well as catering for private events is still very much on the agenda, but I for one couldn’t be happier that there is now a place to pick up the daily fix of bakery goodness. As I’m finishing up my baguette I can’t help but hear the large white freezer positioned at the front of the restaurant calling softly to me to come and have a look at what’s inside. The real star of Delicioso is the mouth-watering array of Gelato flavours on offer (16 to be precise, although each day they are rotated from a total of 47). As I made very clear in the last review, I’m a huge fan of Gelato, and so with sampler spoon in hand, proceed to have a nibble of each flavour (for research purposes of course). Settling for strawberry, mango and coconut I order up the

Riga had no problem hypnotizing the crowd with his mixed bag of electro and the floor remained packed for his entire set.

onsidered by many as Indonesia’s take on Weezer, Jakarta band Monkey to Millionaire performed for their fans on stage at Hard Rock Café. Local outfit Scared of Bums took to the stage first with an impressively tight set that spoke of plenty of practice and songwriting skill. Nymphea followed and quickly had a dedicated crew of Nymphites bouncing around to their popular tunes at the front of the stage. Being an early week session it wasn’t a full turn out, but certainly proved that those who love good original music will pull a late Tuesday night out to see their favorite acts. The more venues supporting local artists the better.

Undressed for Success

s fashion and club trends bring more and more female DJ’s into the spotlight thanks to their good looks and eye popping costumes, the line seems to be ever shifting as to how far a DJ will go to get that extra bit of attention. Well look no further than DJ Mari Ferrari for that extra mile. This Russian representative for Playboy hit the decks at Blue Eyes and as she lost every item of clothing above the hips, she gained the focus of every pair of eyes in the venue. Apparently she also played some music…

ne of Sweden’s most happening DJ’s, Futeki made his way to the stage of Double Six on the 24th of July. Things didn’t start off as rivetingly as expected with only a small crowd present, but Futeki put his head down to pump out more lively Techno House beats, bringing new life to the party and also more clubbers. The festivities began to pick up the pace as the rising sun slowly peaked over the horizon.
