SANTA MONICA & THE BRANDALS: BREAKING OUT AT BAYBEATS

Pun The Brandals. But at the mo’ jazz instrumentals, especially guitar instrumentals is what I’m into right now. Soothes the mind some what. The likes of Joe Pass, Tal Farlow. Great guitarists. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story about it? I think my very first album that I ever bought was a punk compilation called Punk-O-Rama by Epitaph Records. And I think I stole 15 bucks from my dad’s wallet to buy it. I still have the cd, but it’s all scratched up. What is your all-time favourite album? Why? So far, Rx Bandits - The Resignation. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Hmmmm fun question.. I maybe would like to be a pro skydiver and base jumper. Depends on what type of a weekend I’m having. If it’s a biking one, usually complimented with a bit of punk. Suicidal Tendencies - Freedumb; a good jolt to the heart.

Stereophonics

Is Dead, Koil, Andra and the Backbone, Dead Squad, Gugun and the Blues Shelter, dan banyak lagi. Sebaiknya kita tunggu. Sementara itu, simak terus perkembangannya di www.javarockingland.com

Billy Corgan - Smashing Pumpkins

Yes, the biggest rock festival in South East Asia is back! Last year they brought relatively big names—and attracted almost 50,000 people—such as Mr. Big, Mew, Third Eye Blind, Secondhand Serenade, etc; in 2010 this Gudang Garam-sponsored event will present even bigger calibres: Smashing Pumpkins, Stereophonics, Arkarna, Mutemath, Datarock, Di-rect and more. The venue is at Carnaval Beach, Ancol, the same spot as last year and tickets can already be purchased. The normal price for a day event is Rp 320.000, while the 3-day pass is Rp 760.000. There will also be a camp site where the public can rent tents to stay in. The confirmed schedule for the international bands so far is: Smashing Pumpkins & Datarock on Friday, October 8; Stereophonics, Galaxy 7 and Arkarna on Saturday, October 9; and Mutemath + Di-rect on Sunday, October 10. When beauty hides the shades of the past‌ Bali; one of the most impressive spikes in the mo-hawk of the Indonesian archipelago, a place where continental shelves are colliding, ancient gods find conflict and harmony and millions of people from different cultures arrive each year to escape the normality of their lives back home.

T

eeming with life, bursting with renewal and constantly shape-shifting the modern landscape, this unique little island seems to have a consistent knack for taking what doesn’t work, chewing it up and spitting it out into a fresh idea. As quickly as a wet season storm pushes through and drives the dirt from the gutters, buildings go up and structures are torn down, restaurants close their doors and new clubs become hotspots, traffic collides into a tangled mess before streaming back into safety; the ongoing process of destruction and creation clearly visible thanks to a great big fat volcano called Mount Agung which just happened to form the land we stand on, blaring the obvious lesson of just how much a destructive force can lead to new life and fresh beauty. The cycle of life in a rather large nutshell. So what better place for those in need of a change to do a bit of tearing down and rebuilding of their own? On an island where constant change is a given, a belief in reincarnation lies at

feature the core of its people, a collision of cultures is inescapable and a cauldron of varying characters and personalities co-exist within an environment of acceptance. What better place for someone to dismantle and throw away their old selves? What better opportunity for the escapee to regain freedom of mind? What better place for an exile, to burn yesterday’s offerings, to set loose past grievances and to create a fresh personality slate. All of their own. One needn’t spend too much time in Bali before such characters begin to come out of the woodwork, more than eager to further cement their new found identity by breezing over their pre Bali life as though it were just a phase they were going through. “So what were you doing back home?” “Oh you know, this and that, a mix of stuff, development and… building… things. Made some money on the way and sold a few… you know. Artist really, though, wound up in Bali to further my… creativity”

he could see spirits moving through the halls at night. He’d let it all get to him and after booking an anonymous hotel room for a night, something “happened” and the skipper had skipped the continent. “I think I’m looking for a new job,” he said with uncertainty. “Gotta wait and see what happens, I’m waiting for a call”. “Why did you have to bolt?” Stoltz enquired. “There was an ‘incident’...” he replied, wide eyed, staring over my shoulder and out to sea with a wry half smile. We could tell by his face and the drawn out pronunciation of the word ‘incident’ that some seriously heinous shite had gone down. It turned out that the incident involved copious amounts of alcohol, a hold up with a toy gun, an escort named Brandy, an argument, a door slamming and a missing fingertip. It then ended with a quick exit out the back door in the morning as the local police entered through the front. The contract ended abruptly. Now it was time to decompress, reassess, regroup, consider the options and stay low.

‘For those who fell hard, the tropics can provide quite a stage for formulating a new identity...’

Traveling around Indonesia consistently results in many such conversations and exchanges with exiles and expats; often disenfranchised outcasts, misfits and fringe dwellers. Individuals who have spent way too much time on the periphery, and one drunken night simply fell over the edge.

For those who fell hard, the tropics can provide quite a stage for formulating a new identity. Staring out to sea is possibly the best way to contemplate a crossroads in one’s life, but most would argue that easy access to a bar is also a vital ingredient. Your possible future framed with palm trees and glazed with a daiquiri. It was at one of these secluded beach bars on a small island near Bali that my friend, Stoltz, and I met an Australian in such limbo. A skipper in the maritime mining industry hunting for the last traces of precious oil deposits in the far reaches of the world. He had been working off the coast of Cameroon when things had gone a little pear shaped. Pirates had begun regularly spraying the vessel with machine gun fire, one of the crew had died of malaria and another began claiming that

Another exile was met on the same island. A 60-year-old English guy, a beach bar and a sunset chat. Experiencing heavy losses as a result of the financial crisis, a lifetime’s worth of work in the construction industry was lost overnight. Much like his wife, who had decided to move in with the dog trainer. Nice. With the house sold off to compensate the financial fall, like the Aussie, he was now in limbo. He had decided to take advantage of the exchange rate and do some lifestyle arbitrage by riding out the economical storm in Indonesia. “I’m waiting for the bank to tell me that it’s safe to come back” was his line. In the meantime, he had turned inward. Using meditation methods he had learned to cope with the loss of his wife and had embarked on an inward journey through the self. Indonesia provided the coastline and horizon as a focal point for this introspection. Diving also provided an ultimate, serene escape for him. The time spent in the depths, weightless, unaware of the old body and completely removed from all outside elements that might remind him of his predicament. We dived with him. He hung completely motionless, well out in the blue, far from the coral wall for around 5 minutes; he was no one, no thing. A storm raged 20 meters above our heads.

feature A Frenchman in Sanur over a game of pool and several tongue looseners told us that he had left his job a week early and flown to Bali to get away. Further discussion and more social lubricants revealed that he had “left everything”. He didn’t want his old life that had been marred by the murder of his girlfriend. A case in which he was the main suspect. Finally acquitted, it was too late; the six-year investigation had ruined his reputation, scared away his friends and destroyed his life. We couldn’t help ourselves. “So did you… did you do it?”

sharp and every woman a target. “You and I both know that ‘Raven’ is not your real name, R a v e n , ” S t o l t z quipped. “Bro, you’re in Bali, here you can be anyone you want,” he said with a smirk that spoke volumes. His new persona was streamlined, honed. He didn’t mess around. Targets were locked and within minutes we were screaming up a pitchblack road on motorbikes in pursuit of Raven who was doubling two girls from the last bar to the next bar, and the next...

“This exile was at the beginning of the journey, the first phase, the dismantling and sacrificial burning of the past”

“It was not me that stabbed her 43 times!” he snapped, jerking back suddenly with a tainted mist to his stare. As it turned out the culprit was an ex-boyfriend who had then stabbed himself to death after finishing off the girlfriend (yep, nasty). Our Frenchman had been seen with them both that evening and so became the main suspect. “I just want to relax for a while,” he stated as he nervously smashed balls around the holes of the pool table in the lazy beach bar. This exile was at the beginning of his journey, the first phase, the dismantling and sacrificial burning of the past. It was under the forest canopy out the back of some jazz bar in Ubud that we met Raven. American, black silk shirt (open), black Goth jeans, long black straight hair, mid to late 20’s, covered in silver and full of fire, the world was clearly one big buffet and he had an un-suppressible hunger for all it. Slamming another shooter down on the bar, he demanded, “drink with us dudes!”. Raven had discovered a year earlier that he could make more money than he earned in his shitty bar job in The States by setting up connections in the silver jewelry trade in Bali, personally doing runs every few months to transport the silver. His tongue was

There are thousands of stories that weave in and out of each other on this fertile patch of volcanic rock, yet we had broken the seal on just a few. Many more remain hidden or whispered with subtlety through cafes and bars... Of poor gardeners who befriended rich old widows whose wills changed just prior to them being found dead suspiciously. Of men who claim to be living off the royalties of mainstream hits, yet pull up more tales of tax evasion than anything else when their names are googled. Of souls who felt lost in a sea of Western expectations and have found a new platform to become the person they always longed to be, whether built on truth or a reconfigured background. Not saying that every expat on this island is a loose canon, but we’ve all got a little rebuilding to do. Everyone likes to escape the norm and feel that they have found something new. And for those whose world has become a little more unstable than most, what better place than a paradise built on previous devastation for a complete shift in direction. JANGAN BELI BAJAKAN !.

three steps to feeling alienated...

I

n many senses, these three movies are about “aliens”. A feline who wants to dominate the human race must be an alien, right? Then we have two Thai strangers in South Korea, aliens to each other, and aliens to their surroundings, but will they find love in ‘Hello Stranger’? But first, we are invited to revisit Planet Pandora in ‘Avatar: Special Edition’ for an extra 9 minutes of action. For the maximum 3D experience, and romantic ambience, check the schedule in www.blitzmegaplex.com.

D

Avatar: Special Edition Action, Fantasy. Writer and Director: James Cameron. Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez. What does James Cameron promise in the additional 9 minutes included in ‘Avatar: Special Edition? (Please, don’t read on if you have never seen ‘Avatar’ before!) First, it’s a very powerful emotional scene between Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) after the death of Tsu’tey. Not interesting. Then, apparently there is a herd of creatures called Sturmbeest in the forest of Pandora. These creatures will bring a lot of action. Then, the sequence where the Na’vi attack the humans’ bulldozers will be featured as well, to bring the whole story to the final battle. Now, that’s interesting. Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore Action, Comedy, Family. Director: Brad Peyton. Writers: Ron J. Friedman, Steve Bencich. Cast: James Marsden, Nick Nolte, Christina Applegate, Bette Midler, Neil Patrick Harris, Sean Hayes, Roger Moore, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Clarke Duncan, Chris O’Donnell.

(Yah, semua orang pasti perlu bayar tagihan kartu kredit.) Kalau Anda memang penggemar setia film-film semacam ini, atau termasuk di salah satu kategori yang saya sebut di atas, silakan dinikmatilah “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” di layar 3D. Tapi, kalau Anda pecinta binatang sejati, kenapa uang tiketnya tidak langsung disumbangkan ke PETA saja. Untuk keterangan lebih jelas, silakan klik: www.peta.org ‘Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore’ unites both feline and canine species in the war against the evil Kitty Galore, who wants to dominate the whole world, including humans. Now, this dominatrix kitten is unleashed in 3D for your fantasy, gentlemen! Rrrroarrr! That’s as long as you stop reminding yourself that it’s Bette Midler who’s voicing the puss. This is surely a movie made for blondes with chihuahuas, design geeks who get turned on by how smooth the artificial fur is, and movie buffs who keep guessing which expired actor is voicing which dog or cat. If you’re a true animal lover, better send your ticket money to PETA instead. Click www.peta.org.

Hello Stranger Romance, Comedy. Director: Banjong Pisanyatanakol. Writer: Chantawitch Tanasewi. Cast: Chantawitch Tanasewi, Neungtida Seopol. Banjong Pisanyanatakol is already a household name in the Thai film industry, with his ‘Shutter’ being remade by Hollywood, the success of ‘Alone’, and his hilarious part in ‘Phobia’, a compilation of horror stories. This time, he will bring the audience on another kind of roller-coaster ride – a romantic one, set in the melodramatic location of South Korea. A Thai boy and a Thai girl – complete strangers – meet on their vacation to Incheon, Seoul, and Nabida Island. They are bound by their love for Korean romance and melodramatic movies, and as they visit the sites featured in their favorite Korean movies, they will find something real between them. Knowing how good Pisanyanatakol’s “movie-within-a-movie” trip in ‘Phobia’ was, we should be enthusiastic to see ‘Hello Stranger’.

Ramadhan is here: the month where the Muslim population wash away their sins, repent, reflect and dedicate the mind and body to religion - a withdrawal from temptation by fasting from sun up to sundown. It is also the time where food has a powerful hold over the mind, simply because you are being denied it. Thus, it becomes one of the central activities during the holy month. Fonnyta takes a moment to consider the dining of Ramadhan...

D

uring Ramadhan, the very activity of eating becomes a spiritual experience. After 12 hours abstaining from food and drink, the desire to eat will intensify. The flavors and textures of food become doubly enhanced. Eating turns into a brand new, gratifying experience every time, and a reflection that mere bread and water is the most valuable thing when you are hungry. It teaches you wisdom and humility that comes from self control and discipline. In Indonesia, this time of day has very important cultural significance. People return home from work early to join their families to break their fast together. Special Ramadhan recipes are prepared and served. The “buka puasa” (break fast) events are often mini feasts, with food and drinks eaten communally with a sense of gratitude. In my family, during my younger days, my mother would be the central character that we all looked up to and depended on to feed us after 12 hours of abstention, and oh how she enjoyed her role. She would toil in the kitchen to prepare a meal for all of us. For a woman like my mother, not having three kinds of beverages, five kinds of mini snacks and two kinds of light entrees would be unthinkable. And we didn’t have any reason to dispute her. To us, the more the merrier. Generally, we would break our fast with a first round of hot jasmine tea and dates. We then continued with the traditional sweet beverage called Kolak, plus a few kinds of filling snacks such as martabak, batagor, lapis cake and lumpia semarang. The third beverage, usually some kind of concoction of fruit soup and rosewater syrup, would be consumed after the snacks. After the sunset prayer and with a rather full stomach, we would dive into the light entrees such as roti jala & curry and mie kangkung kuah. Then we would fall into a slight food coma, just at the right time for my mother to badger us to do Tarawih (Ramadhan night prayers). Ahh, the joy. Nowadays during Ramadhan, although I personally am as agnostic as I can be and live far from my mother, I can’t help but look for that piece of Ramadhan at home. Three kinds of beverages, various snacks and light entrees. I don’t eat them all, I share the food with those who are fasting instead. My peers asked me why I would do this. Well, apart from keeping home as close as possble, Ramadhan has this calming and reflecting quality to me. I just need to see the abundance of joy on the table. Because during this month, food becomes more than just nutrition: it’s a sign of blessing.

ALL IN THE NAME OF

ROCK ‘N ROLL I forgot how much fun Hard Rock Cafe can be until I walked in there the other day. It’s something quite inexplicable really when it comes to this place. There are times when many people think Hard Rock has had its day in the sun and has settled to a place where you go when you’ve exhausted all other options. But always – always – after you get there, you find yourself settled comfortably, sitting down to a scrumptious big portion of Barbeque Beef Ribs (259K) (or their giant portion of a Cheeseburger (159K)) and submerging yourself

into the rock n roll surroundings, nodding your head along with the music while gobbling down a huge delicious hunk of a smoked dish. Perfection. I don’t necessarily think it’s the food that gets you everytime, although their selection of steak and burgers is one of the best in town. And I don’t have to tell you much about this global brand and how its food and rock n roll-related attitude succesfully swept the world off its feet. It would be pointless to dispute the 39 years of history from

when the first restaurant was opened in London by two restless, music-loving, young Americans, eager to find a taste of home in a foreign country. But, it’s still not even about that. It’s not about the legendary cheese burger, or its world famous barbeque ribs or its old school American style checkered table clothes (which are actually no longer being used in the newly refurbished Hard Rock) that has got Hard Rock to where it is right now. It is more about the aura it exudes the character it conveys. It’s about the attitude behind the rock n roll-related stories spanning for three generations – from the eras of Hendrix to Green Day, from the flower generation to the x and y and z generations – all with the same core understanding: when all words fail, music speaks… so shut up and head bang, dear. It is exactly this attitude and lifestyle that is so heavily ingrained in the heart of every musical afficionado, topped off by the philosophy of “Love All, Serve All, All Is One, Take Time To Be Kind, and Save The Planet”, which makes Hard Rock more than just a restaurant: it’s a culture.

Clapton and Townsend (that’s Eric and Pete, for those who don’t know) on whose guitar should be put on the wall, to Garcia’s (Grateful Dead) obsession with the word “Rumours” upon writing his album sequence “From the Mars Hotel” in 1974. Those walls have eyes, and they collect your stories too. I had a chance to speak to Paulus Panggabean, the General Manager of Hard Rock Cafe Jakarta and Bali a while back, where he told me,”Its difficult not to have Hard Rock deeply ingrained in my life, because it’s no longer a mere place for business for me; it’s a way of life.” And true enough, you see this in virtually every member of floor staff, serving food along with their own rock ‘n’ roll persona.

It’s not supposed to be a dining event, it is meant to be an honest experience. Those who refuse to conform would find a place here. A place where all sorts of characters are equally welcomed, where tattoos and piercings are not frowned upon but encouraged. Where Elvis fans mingle As new music history is made and redefined every with J’Lo’s without a problem. The comprehensive “visual history” of rock ‘n’ roll, and strings of neatly pinned pins on his maroon-black each and every one of them has its own story uniform bounce along. seems like just yesterday that we saw the first (X)S.M.L store and without even realizing it they’re already entering their second decade. Their latest collection for 2010 with the theme ‘Caravan’ is a depiction of the brand’s journey to a new beginning. Although ‘Caravan’ will take them somewhere, the collection also reminisces about the past. In general, although the collection has a bohemian, utilitarian and a laidback feel, it continues to support the label’s signature concept: providing basic pieces that you can layer on top of each other and mix and match.

Just as a vehicle is used for road trip, usually a long one, where people encounter different experiences as a team along the way, a caravan is the ideal symbol to reflect Biyan Wanaatmadja’s journey with his business partner, Benarty Suhali, which started back in 1999 when they created this brand. Biyan said that they want to celebrate what they’ve accomplished so far, bearing in mind that the journey they’ve taken still has a long way to go. He said that as a label, (X)S.M.L still have room to give their customers so much more. The collection itself consists of young energetic pieces, which maintain the brand’s sophistication. You will see a lot of dresses with different patterns and textures; a couple of floral patterns with unusual cuts, which give a different vibe to an otherwise very feminine pattern. Blouses for

all types of occasions and styles, from formal, feminine to edgy are also available. You will still see perfect tailoring throughout this collection, as well as deconstructive ones. The colors chosen for this collection are mainly muted and neutral, and those closely linked to utilitarian style such as khaki, army green and camel. Ornaments such as patchwork, applique and bold accessories are dominating this collection. Cessa Suhali, the Managing Director of (X)S.M.L stated that the design philosophy of the label has been long focused on giving designs that have a sense of youth, playfulness with a touch of modernity, and forward thinking, and now they want to focus more on creating contemporary and hip designs that show individuality.

quality aspect of the brand, which is a good thing. And what makes me excited the most is their fall/ winter collection, which offers so many different kinds of blazers and jackets!

Are you one of those people who religiously visit Pondok Indah Mall every weekend? If yes, here’s one more store you need to visit during your pilgrimage there. The newly opened British based store, Marks & Spencer, is located at the second level, just across from Mango. It is huge. I’ve visited the store from time to time but mostly for the bath and body collection. Its Waterlily has always, and will always, be my favorite bath and body product. But at its launch last week, I got the chance to explore every corner and paid more attention to the collection. As far as my memories go, the Marks & Spencer collection lacked a fresh vibe. I always associated the clothes with the older generation. Flash forward to the present, it turns out there have been some major makeovers in the style department, because everything in there screams new, stylish, and up to date, yet they still maintain the classic high

It was during this trip too, that I learned about Marks & Spencer’s variety of lines, that cater to all kinds of women and styles. ‘Limited Collection’ offers contemporary separates with a very up to date style - very fast fashion and trendy. In fact, they consistently have new designs every six weeks. ‘Autograph’ is more sophisticated and stylish; think elegant, timeless pieces in luxury fabrics and cuts: classic Mark & Spencer. ‘Per Una’ is a designer boutique brand. It offers smart casual collections with a strong Italian designer heritage. Very feminine and well co-ordinated collections, perfect for those who just want something to grab and go but still look stylish. ‘Portfolio’ offers a strong, smart-casual range of co-ordinate pieces that allows you to buy whole outfits or just pick pieces that will sit with an existing wardrobe. The ‘Indigo’ collection is focused on denim for your smart yet casual needs. Hanifa Ambadar, editor of www.fashionesedaily. com – Style & Beauty with Attitude.

SURF feature

Canggu Surf CommunityComp T he swell finally arrived at Echo Beach on August 8th, allowing Canggu Surf Community to hold their 3rd Annual Surf Contest. The CSC, chaired by Komang Widarna, was originally founded to support local surfers and take care of the beach, but this year’s contest had a special focus on the local ‘groms’ – youth surfers, for those not fluent in surf lingo. With a belief that sometimes Bali’s big name contests and surfers can hog both the world-class waves and the limelight, CSC decided to give the youngsters from Brawa to Kedungu a chance to battle it out amongst themselves. Divided into age categories of 16 and under (won by Jeren) and 17-21 (won by Sodok), the guys fought to scoop

custom-made boards donated by Tipi Jabrik of the Indonesian Surfing Championship (ISC) and shaper Luke Studer. Open and ‘Legend’ divisions also competed, which were won by Koming and Larry. The contest was a huge success, with live music in the afternoon livening up the beach with beats and it was treated as a celebration, dedicated to all the members of the surf community who take part in CSC events year-round, including beach clean ups. All those who took part received prizes from the events’ many sponsors, including a trip on the Sea Sentosa boat, which CSC are planning to take to Nusa Lemobongan and Desert Point, Lombok in their next quest for quality waves. Papa’s Jl Pantai Kuta Legian Tel. 755055

Fresh from a holiday overseas, Tosca returns to Bali and to work, and checks out award-winning Italian restaurant, Papa’s. Except, it’s not really much like work… is it?

If

Papa’s Italian restaurant was an actor, it’d be Tom Hanks. Or Jack Nicholson. In fact, insert the name of any actor here, who has scooped multiple gongs throughout his glittering career, and you’d just about hit the nail on the head. Because one of the first things that catches my eye is the number of awards on the wall by the kitchen, including Best Italian Restaurant and Best Dessert. It all sounds very promising…

082 | beatmag.com

The venue itself is a fusion of chic and contemporary style, with something a little more traditional: and by ‘traditional’, we’re talking Mediterranean here, not Balinese. Al fresco tables face the beach, and are draped in simple white tablecloths and lit by candles. Recent renovations have seen a large new bar installed along with a second storey balcony, specifically designed to cater for Bali’s many sunset worshippers. All the chefs are hard at work in the spotless kitchen, yet every one of them has a smile for any customer who catches their eye. Open since 1999, Papa’s is a member of the Alam Resorts group, along with other popular Bali names such as Ifiori. There’s almost a family feeling between the staff and customers here, many of whom return year after year. This genuine friendliness is what makes the atmosphere at Papa’s that little bit more special: the staff care. And in true Italian fashion, families with children are especially welcome. Restaurant supervisor Made tells me that kids can go off and make pizza

or feed the fish in the pond, leaving their parents to sit back and relax with a drink to the sounds of the nightly live solo musician.

one of the house specialties: the Vulcano Pizza (125K). The Vulcano comes with three different stuffings: the ‘Fujiyama’ (freshwater prawns, tuna and anchovies); the ‘Kintamani’ (beef, ham, spicy Speaking of drinks, I’m quickly presented with lamb sausage and salami), or, for all you hogs out Papa’s most popular cocktail, a Berry Sensation there, the ‘Mount Agung’, which includes all of the (78K), which consists of vodka, triple sec, coconut above! You’ll notice I said ‘stuffings’ here instead liqueur and strawberries, all blended together of the traditional ‘toppings’; and that’s because this pizza is something of a work of art, coming out of the oven with a thin pizza base covering, that has risen up in the wood firing oven, making the whole thing look remarkably like a Christmas pudding, particularly as Italian grappa is drizzled over it and set alight. Quite a few flash bulbs go off as this rather impressive and unique pizza is delivered to our table. After cutting away the top, a beautifully tasty and filling pizza pie is revealed, which I eventually had to take home ‘bungkus’, as the pizza wasn’t the only thing that was stuffed.

with ice to form a delicious kind of alcoholic smoothie. An ice cold drink in front of me and Made cracking jokes, and this feels more like a night out with friends than work. And this is the thing about Papa’s – you are made to feel special and individual – just like the dishes they serve up. Several items featured on the menu, such as the Garlic Prawns appetizer and Warm Chocolate Cake dessert are cooked up using recipes that countless customers ask to be given, but they are a more closely guarded secret than Coca Cola’s. After swaying towards the huge Seafood Platter for Two (499K), which looks more like it could feed the five thousand, we decide to keep our order strictly Mediterranean, and opt for the Braised Lamb Shank (179K). This dish is served with braised vegetables and whipped garlic potatoes, and explodes with rich and delicious flavours. The lamb is succulent and teeming with taste, literally falling away from the bone. Our second main course choice had to be

Ending the night on a truly high note, we tucked in to the award-winning Warm Chocolate Cake (49K); which was indeed warm, rich, luxurious chocolatey heaven on a plate, served with cream, strawberries, and a chocolate sauce. And, if Papa’s restaurant is Tom Hanks, this cake is surely the Forrest Gump of the menu. It’s a long time since I’ve tasted a chocolate cake this good, and for a second there I’m concerned I’m going to drool on their pristine tablecloth or spray someone whilst talking, due to overactive saliva glands. Fortunately, I maintain control of my mouth, and manage to order a coffee to ease the bulging of my incredibly satisfied stomach. There’s a large variety of coffees available, including one blend called Café Rituale (50K), that’s so posh, only management are allowed to pour it. I particularly like the quirky “We Give Up...” option - the final coffee on the extensive list, which allows customers to design their own blend. What was I saying about individuality and well-looked after customers..? Papa’s may have “given up” looking for yet another coffee… but I too, have officially given up looking for as unique a pizza or as good a chocolate cake in Bali. Papa’s don’t need to preach… the quality speaks for itself. Tosca beatmag.com | 083

SOS Anantara Sunday 8 August 086 | beatmag.com

OS Anantara’s Sunday Summer Groove event was kicked off by Sound Syndicated DJ all-stars, spinning out sunset tracks, before the switch to twilight brought in a higher tempo of house beats. As the night lead on, UK DJ Tasita D’Mour showed off her skills on the turntables, warming up the crowd before the night’s main event, DJ Grant Nelson. House and electro rhythms were the ingredients of this heavy weight’s set and he pumped them out as the beautiful MC Vibes riled up the crowd…

he masses poured in once again to get sun baked in the fine surrounds of Ku De Ta and all its beachside glory. It took a while for people to warm up to the stage for a dance, but in the meantime the bars filled up either side as everyone got socially lubricated in high season style. Outside of acrobatics and costumed dancers, Heather Small brought a live element to the show that got everyone’s attention, famous for her vocal talent that took flight with M People back in the 90’s. With the dance floor then shaking, Chicago’s Frankie Knuckles brought his heavyweight DJ bag of house tracks to the decks and kept everyone on the dance pulse, famous for his part in spearheading the House movement in the 80’s and 90’s. Consider this party a warm up for a month of Ku De Ta goodness.

SOS Wednesday 11 August

In the Footsteps of our FunkFathers...

S

oulman Carlton J Smith is an amazingly engaging, charismatic and dynamic performer. He’s currently ripping it up like James Brown at his sunset shows Wednesdays -Sundays at SOS Anantara until 5th September. Showtime starts 5.30 pm and it’s free entry so get down there for a cocktail and say hi. We did... What’s your favourite song ever? When it comes to songs there are too many to mention. Such is my love of music. But I’ll take Ave Maria and Baby Don’t You Weep, those two get to me every time. How did you get into the music business? I got into James Brown at a very early age. I saw him perform and I thought this is what I want to do and that’s what started it off. But how did you know you could do it? You don’t really know, you’re just compelled to do it. And hopefully you have the fortitude that will keep you going in spite of rejections cos you’re gonna get rejected. Out of all my buddies growing up, I was the one who couldn’t sing, I couldn’t perform, but I kept doing it, kept wanting to do it. Hey! That’s a question that no one has ever asked me! What was your first big break? I got to play James Brown in a movie, ‘Liberty Heights’

088 | beatmag.com

that was pretty big and I will always be appreciative of that. Tell us about your passion for clothes. Again, it was James Brown. Every time I saw him step up on the stage, he and his band were dressed and groomed immaculately, and when these people walked out on stage, they looked magnificent. It’s a shame these days cos people get up on stage in sneakers and jeans and T-shirts. If you’re a rapper that’s one thing, but if you’re a singer... well, there’s nothing that looks better than a well dressed man. What have you got tattooed on your arms? Oh, these are the names of all my heroes. Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Curtis Mayfield, these are all the guys I want to sing like, and these are all the guys I wanted to be – James Brown, Al Green, Bobby Womack, Sly & The Family Stone... If I’m having a bad day I can put on a record by any one of these guys and it will really change my day.

Double Six Thursday 12 August

Making yourself Famous

O

nce again it was ‘Famous’ time as Double Six jammed up and spread its dance floor out past the bungee tower. The headliners kicked in from around half one as Gina Star and Australia’s dance guru Mark James got active on the decks. DJ Deny and DJ’s Agnelli & Nelson kept it rolling as the sounds moved from House through to Trance and Electro. The troops pulled in from Kuta, though the roads aren’t getting any wider with the traffic, so getting into the Double Six area is near impossible at the moment. The reward once you’re there though is that if you’re locked in there’s plenty to do. With Cocoon now on the corner you can pretty much move from venue to venue starting with a sunset drink and finishing up with a sunrise coffee. Hello Goodies...
