B
O
ctober is far from being over, and the musical entertainment just keeps on coming without giving our wallets any time to refill. Earlier this month Jakarta echoed dance beats with heavy bass lines at Playground, then the following week the thunderous sounds of rock were heard from Ancol and as this edition is being printed, Jakarta is going old school roots with a blues festival in Senayan. Nearing the end of October, more great concerts are on the way, from the mellow tunes of Kenny G and David Foster, to thrashing punk rock numbers from Hatebreed, whatever your music preference, it’s sure to be headed to Jakarta. One concert, which should not be missed, is Simply Red’s farewell tour, which will be part of the Soul Nation event which will also feature a variety of Hip Hop and RnB performances. Be sure to check What’s On and Here Now to be in the know of what’s happening in Jakarta.

Istora Senayan fri 29 Oct 10pm
has Been Born back in the 80’s, Simply Red was the creation of English vocalist, Mick Hucknall. Originally intended to be called ‘Red’ only, the band’s name ended up as ‘Simply Red’ to make it that bit more catchy. Simply Red’s musical characteristics are defined as New Romantic and Blue-Eyed Soul with hints of Reggae. Mick Hucknall has tried his hand at a solo career also, releasing the album ‘Tribute to Bobby’ in 2008. is Now Mick Hucknall announced in 2009 that Simply Red would do a farewell tour throughout the year up until 2010. He said that after 25 years of his musical career, 2009 would be the last tour for Simply Red. They will perform at the Jakarta International Java Soul Nation festival in Istora Senayan, which is on for two days on the 29th and 30th of October, with Simply Red’s final performance being on the first day of the festival. nthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. on The Beat : Audionauts itu apa sih ? Kita bermain set Live PA yang full of technology. The Beat : Asal kata dari Audionauts dari Astronauts ? Ruben : Benar. The Beat : Untuk set musiknya seperti apa ? The Beat : Apa proyek selanjutnya ?

The Beat : Acaranya apa saja ? The Beat : Ada pernyataan buat publik ? Let’s play DJ to the next level !.

T
his month, the classical music scene in Jakarta is going to get exciting. More and more classical music concerts are lining up for us to choose from. But before I actually start with the Jakarta scene, allow me to share some info from Singapore first. Singapore Sun Festival is back this year, starting from 29th October until 7th November, bringing you all the finest things in life, from cuisine, music and movies to art and well being. Particularly in music. Jose Carreras of ‘The Three Tenors’ is coming to perform for the very first time in Singapore in an Italian Gala performance with the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra and soloists from the Accademia Del Maggio
046 | beatmag.com
Musical Fiorentino, conducted by one of Italy’s most celebrated conductors, Paolo Olmi, on November 2nd. Book your flight and get the tickets online right away, for a once in a lifetime experience to catch Jose Carreras performing in Singapore. Back to Jakarta, we have an opera to attend! A newly composed opera called “Tan Malaka” is the latest collaboration between composer Tony Prabowo and librettist Goenawan Mohamad. Focusing on the life of one of the most important revolutionary figures in Indonesia, Tan Malaka, both Tony and Goenawan have made this opera into a
form of opera-essay, where there will be two aria singers and two text readers. From the musical aspect, Tony has promised that this opera will be different from his previous avant-garde works such as Kali and The King’s Witch. He said that there will be more melody and harmony, which is such a relief to hear, especially for a conservative audience member like me, who isn’t yet ready to watch such an avant-garde opera. Part of the 3rd Festival Salihara, that has already started (23rd September), Opera Tan Malaka is considered to be the highlight in this festival. Playing for three days only, from 18th to 20th October, this is surely an opportunity not to be missed. It’s not everyday we can watch a world premiere opera, especially one that is focusing on our own historical background. A week after the opera, get ready to get excited again and witness the 25th anniversary concert of Aning Katamsi – one of Indonesia’s leading sopranos. Without a doubt, the talented daughter of the late senior soprano Pranawengrum Katamsi is one of Indonesia’s greatest assets, and through her golden voice, she has brought Indonesia some of its proudest classical moments overseas. I met her for the first time in 2001 and immediately became one of her biggest fans. This upcoming 27th October, Aning Katamsi, accompanied by pianist Levi Gunardi, will perform at Usmar Ismail Hall singing some of her favorite art songs from Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt and Hageman with some dramatic arias from Mozart, Richard Strauss, Puccini and more. Aning Katamsi “Red Threat of Love” – 25th anniversary concert is definitely a must watch. She is an Indonesian star and we are very proud to have her.
To end this fantastic month, The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra will perform on 29th October at Aula Simfonia Jakarta. This professional musical orchestra is coming all the way to Jakarta from the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia for the very first time. Considered one of the best in Europe, this orchestra has had many performers and wellknown conductors who performed with them such as Zubin Mehta and Yehudi Menuhin. For this concert, The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra will have another great guest conductor and guess what? He is Indonesian! His name is Noorman Widjaja and was born in a musical family. His talent as a conductor struck when he had to direct the choral concert to honor our late President Soekarno at that time in Jakarta. Noorman was just eleven years old, and was a replacement for his ill father. Since then, he has been studying and furthering his career around the world from Shanghai, Japan to all over Europe. This is another proud moment for Indonesians to know that such a high profile orchestra is going to be led by an Indonesian. Together with the Batavia Madrigal Singers and soloists such as Ani Takidze (pianist), Iskandar Widjaja (violin), and Lorena Campari (soprano), the orchestra under Noorman’s baton in the concert “Music from 1000 Miles” will perform some big and famous pieces such as Rossini’s “Il Barbiere de Siviglia” overture, arias from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, Pablo Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasie and Chopin’s Piano Concerto no. 1 in E minor. I believe this month is the best that we ever had… make sure you make the most of it.

What music are you into at the moment? I’m definitely listening to a lot of rock. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story about it? My first record was ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magic’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers —that was when I first decided to learn to play an instrument, which was the bass. The record inspired me and taught me a lot – Flea is an amazing bass guitarist. What is your all-time favorite album. Why? I’d have to say one of our own: ‘Unity’. There are a lot of tracks on that record that give me my life and my spirit back. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Never bought a bad one!

I calm things back down again with our own track, ‘Ya Sudahlah’.

ROCKIN’ DREAMS DO COME TRUE J
Nah, masih berani bermimpi? [RUDOLF DETHU]

To go to a Wolfmother gig in Jakarta, back then, you would never have thought possible. But these days, it is possible. And not just for the Pumpkins or Wolfmother, but also for Muse, Korn, Avril Lavigne, 311, Placebo, Black Eyed Peas, Bjork, My Chemical Romance, NOFX, Belle & Sebastian, Stereophonics, Dashboard Confessional, and too many more to mention, all of whom have played in big cities in Indonesia now — mostly in Jakarta. Indeed, these last few years, showbiz has become a big and upcoming trend. More people seem interested in doing it seriously. Local promoters/event organizers don’t really think twice anymore about bringing big name artists to Indonesia. The last gigantic music event, Java Rockin’Land, was so successful—some said it attracted 50,000 plus people. This fact brings even bigger hopes that showbiz has become stronger. It proves that showbiz in Indonesia is alive and kicking. Nowadays, music lovers have more and better options. Each and every month there are interesting concerts. Not only in Jakarta, but also in Bandung, Bali, and a few other areas in Java and Sumatra. Look at how dynamic the music scene is: October 24th sees Vampire Weekend at Bengkel Night Park and October 27th Hatebreed at Gelora Bung Karno (both in Jakarta); on November 10th, Temper Trap will be in Bali’s Hard Rock Café before heading to Jakarta and Tokyo Police Club and Raveonettes will both play in Bandung mid November. So, following all that, have you been dreaming about Iron Maiden coming to Indonesia? Quit dreaming. Bruce Dickinson and friends are coming to Jakarta and Bali in February of 2011. Get ready for the ticket race.
cd cdREVIEW REVIEW
Escapade 001 Osvaldo Nugroho
K

The girl, The boy, and the Baby The Greenberg boy may be interesting and the tattooed girl captivating; yet, when a girl and a boy live together with a baby – now, that spells boredom. Here are the three movies for the upcoming two weeks, and if you do the math, you’ll enjoy being single.
Wajib tonton! After failing to chase his dream to become a musician, and finding that his gig as a carpenter in New York goes nowhere, Roger Greenberg finds himself as a bitter 40-something who has to go back to Los Angeles. The loser in life has to house-sit his brother’s lavish home and, even worse, he must reconnect with his old friends. Old friends like former bandmate Ivan (Rhys Ifans), who doesn’t necessarily stay a best friend. Greenberg the character is driven closer to Florence (Greta Gerwig) – his brother’s personal assistant – as ‘Greenberg’ the movie is driven closer to the romantic comedy genre. Writer-director Noel Baumbach stays true to form after his movies “The Squid and the Whale” and “Margot at the Wedding”, also told the tale of people who have lost their path in life. Ben Stiller shines just like Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, while Greta Gerwig steals every scene she’s in. A romantic comedy with depth, a study of human relations, “Greenberg” is a must-see!
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Mystery, Thriller, Crime. Director: Niels Arden Oplev. Writers: Nicolaj Arcel, Rasmus Heisterberg, Stieg Larsson. Cast: Ewa Fröling, Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace.

Keberhasilan “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” yang adalah film Swedia ini membuat Hollywood segera mengadaptasinya. Forty years ago, a girl from a large family disappeared, and her body was never found. Today, her dying uncle has a last wish; that is, to solve the case completely. He hires a disgraced journalist and a femme fatale from the digital world – Lisbeth Salander. Salander is a tattooed computer hacker, who has been sexually abused in the past. She takes this case personally, thus driving the story towards a feminist angle. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is based on Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel – the first of a trilogy. This dark, haunting, Swedish film is so good, David Fincher himself got the Hollywood job to remake it, together with Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. History says that the originals are always better; so don’t miss this one to see how it matches up.
Life as We Know It Comedy, Drama. Director: Greg Berlanti. Writer: Ian Deitchman, Kristin Rusk Robinson. Cast: Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Josh Lucas. “Life as We Know It” is the same tired old thing, but what can we do about it? Holly Berenson (Heigl) is a successful caterer, and Eric Messer (Duhamel) is a promising network sports director. They are godfather and godmother of Sophie, yet they hate each other on the first date. After Sophie’s parents die in an accident, Holly and Eric have to move in together to parent Sophie. Surely, they put the innocent baby before their childish love-hate relationship? This film follows the new life of these two, but honestly, if you have a life of your own, you’ll take a raincheck on this one.

MR. CURRY
T
here’s always something new in Jakarta. This is especially true with its selection of culinary delights. And leave it to Ismaya Group to bring us another great addition of eateries in the capital city. I recently visited Mr. Curry, a place declared as a Japanese Curry & Sweet House. Originating in Singapore, Mr. Curry opened in June 2010 in Grand Indonesia Shopping Town.

Japanese-style curry is getting up there in popularity among diners all over the world, and of course in Indonesia. Mr. Curry is well-known for its special Mango-based curry sauce. It is bursting with flavors, with sweet and sour delightfully blended. There are four different curry sauces, Original, Fresh (red; tomato added), Rich (black; with squid ink), and Creamy (white; cream added). Each one of them is tasty; offering uniqueness and a fresh way to enjoy your curry dishes. Right now, they are introducing another one of their special creations, a Japanese Fuji Apple-based Curry sauce. No mango this time, but it also has a special tangy zest that you should try. And for levels of spiciness, you can choose from Non-spicy, Spicy, and Very Hot. By the way, Mr. Curry also prides itself on getting the freshest ingredients imported from Japan. Their Japanese rice was one of the many notable highlights for me.
desserts? I was definitely intrigued by their Stick Cakes (18K). These are not your ordinary cheese cakes. The Red Pepper or Wasabi & Black Sesame cheese cakes are certainly distinctive. Go ahead and try for yourself. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. As for the interior, Mr. Curry has a modern Japanese casual feel about it. It is fresh, bright, clean, and quite cheerful. The restaurant creates the experience of dining inside Mr.Curry’s home and kitchen as if you are in the home of a friend whose family members love to cook and mingle. The dining area is surrounded by kitchen equipment, cooking ingredients, and cooking spices which are stacked up strategically to create two private dining rooms. In the front of the restaurant, in typical Japanese style, a large window façade displays replicas of the menu items to help guests choose what they can enjoy inside.
With its bright and jolly ambience, Mr.Curry is I started my lunch with the Crab Meat Rice Pizza a great place for any occasion. Overall, a solid (38K); nicely spiced crab meat on top of burger addition to Jakarta’s dining scene. meat-sized rice. Next, I tried the Oxtail Curry Rice (68K); a delightful dish specially created for the Indonesian market. It is one of their best MR. CURRY JAPANESE sellers here. I could see that a lot of customers CURRY & SWEET HOUSE ordered it for lunch that day. I also ordered the Grand Indonesia Shopping Town West Mall Mentai Omelette Black Curry (58K). DEWI
LOUNGE More than a sports bar...
“It’s been a hard day’s night…” so sang The Beatles. It certainly felt like it that evening. A friend and I just finished working on our project that day, and we definitely needed to relax over a couple of drinks. We found our way to a cozy place called Dewi Lounge, located right across from the Kemang Food Festival. Some friends of ours recommended this place to us. They like to hang out here to watch football matches and also to enjoy the live music. At first glance, Dewi Lounge looks like an ordinary sports bar. Football paraphernalia is placed all over the walls and even all the way to the ceiling. You can just imagine the excited crowd cheering their favorite teams to victory on the weekends.
066 | beatmag.com
But it is more than just a sports bar. The live acoustic bands are slowly but surely bringing a sizeable crowd each night. Tuesday is Jazz night, Wednesday is Reggae, Thursday and Friday the band plays current hits, and Saturday is the time for alternative pop rock music. On Sunday they just concentrate on the football crowd. The patrons are mixed, too. That night I saw some office workers in one corner cooling down with a few pints, a couple sitting closely and holding hands in another, and a group of friends grooving to the tunes played by the band. Joint owners and managers Dewi Natalie O’Neill (Ah, so this is where the name came from) and Eriedan Haurissa took some time out to talk to their guests. Dewi Lounge actually moved from Pasaraya Blok M to Kemang in March 2010. They decided on a football theme after getting a good reaction from the last World Cup fever. But the live bands have been getting good reviews as well.Their reggae night has proved to be particularly popular. And I believe it is the only one of its kind in the Kemang area. Many also come here, especially on the weekend, to meet up and ‘prepare’ themselves before hitting the bigger clubs. The bartender sent us their signature drinks, St. Petersburg (75K), a good mix of Kahlua, gin, and beer, and also Dewi’s Paradise (75K), a
combination of tequila, vodka, beer and OJ. We continued to have a good chat with our hosts but we were getting kind of hungry. My friend tried the Australian Sirloin Steak (95K), but Dewi and Eriedan suggested the Soto Betawi (55K), which I ordered. An unusual choice for a sports-themed bar, but it has been getting good compliments from their patrons, and rightly so. The blend of herbs and spices hit just the right spot. The Australian sirloin is tender, with a good size and complemented well by a tasty mushroom sauce. The Club Sandwich (50K) is also popular, especially among the weekend sporting crowd. A hard day’s night no more, we enjoyed our evening at Dewi Lounge. As the band played another song, we finished up our drinks and said goodbye to our lovely hosts who had made us feel right at home. Another good addition to what Kemang has to offer. Opens weeknights: 5pm-1am Weekend: 6pm-2am 20% off all items before 7pm Closed on Monday Dewi Lounge Jl. Superdry I
f you are running out of comfortable yet stylish outfits for daily activities, Superdry may be your next shopping destination. After all, there may come a time when a girl wants to lay low and opt for a more comfortable outfit, right? Superdry has nothing to do with “fast-dry” technology or anything else of that sort. The name was chosen because the founder was previously running a laundry service, which inspired the name of his new venture. Seeing Kanji or Japanese writing on some of the designs may mislead us into thinking that the company is Japan-based. Actually, it is just a part of the design, inspired by the designer’s recent trip to that part of Asia. Superdry is actually an internationally renowned UK fashion brand, offering quality, detailed clothing and accessories. It operates a multi-channel business through a combination of Superdry and Cult stand-alone stores, Superdry concessions, as well as UK and international wholesale. Currently, Superdry branded products are sold in over 20 countries, and the first stand-alone store in Asia was launched June 2010 in the Plaza Indonesia 1st floor, Jakarta. According to Vita Ismo, Brand Manager of Superdry, Plaza Indonesia, Superdry’s core products are T-shirts and Osaka tees. They have a number of details such as cracked-paint and doublebrushed fabric designs. For its Autumn/Winter 2010 collection, Superdry is offering items in two categories: biker wear and vintage thrift.

The jacket collection is expanding to include waxed cotton biker jackets, jet stream jackets, ultimate sheepskin flight jackets, oversized detailing and parachute pack zippers, not forgetting the black bear hood with faux fur lining, which is new for this season. The vintage thrift category is exclusively for women. It maintains a feminine feel with lace applique straps, mixed with velvet and ribbon trim to complete the era’s style. Other items, such as soft knit cardigans and boystyle blazers are some interesting pieces that are suitable for us in a tropical country like Indonesia, since the materials are nice and light, and not too thick. ell, that was the plan anyway, until her trip was canceled after a little fiasco in Japan, which made her hop on the next flight back to the USA. But anyway, a couple of days ago, Paris’ planned visit to Jakarta made her become the much talked about topic among the people here. The reason for her visit was to launch her handbags and accessories store, that was officially opened on Saturday, September 25th at Grand Indonesia shopping mall. At the same time, Paris Hilton Handbags & Accessories Fall/Winter 2010 Collection was introduced. Paris Hilton retail stores have previously reached Dubai, Sao Paolo, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City and St. Tropez. Although Paris couldn’t make her visit to Jakarta, people were still enthusiastic to see her collection
and store. The crowd not only watched the collection preview in the fashion show, but they got the chance to visit the store at Under Ground level, West Mall of Grand Indonesia. The items available in the store range from handbags to purses and perfumes. Paris described her collection as sexy, sleek and stylish. “I wanted handbags that both look great and last a long time. All of the handbags are great to carry around. They go well with any outfit, they’re comfortable to hold and super cute,” Paris stated. Art/Culture Scoop RUMAH CINTA (House of Love)
The title of this exhibition is what ties together all the aspects of the paintings and sculptures created by Gigih Wiyono, which are presented here. After studying at various archaeological sites and seeing the many different aspects of human fertility depicted in the cultures he has seen, Gigih represents these differences through his works. Showcasing the different philosophies of sexual preferences, Gigih could also be said to show how thin the line is between pornography and art; depending of course, on a person’s own perspective. The exhibition will be held at Bentara Budaya Jakarta, from the 29th of October until the 9th of November. Bentara Budaya Jakarta, Jln. Palmerah Selatan 17. Tel: (021) 5483008
NOODLE THEORY Jakarta-based photography artist Angki Purbandono (otherwise known as Angki) is one of those souls whose search for new ideas never ceases. Like the press release for his latest exhibition says, “(Angki) invariably re-questions general perceptions in the world of art photography, seeking possibilities for new spaces into which his artistic passion can be channeled.” True to his word, Angki’s latest project has him asking the question, “Must a photographer always take pictures using his or her own camera?” In “Noodle Theory,” Angki uses others’ cameras to explore the role that photography plays as a means of archiving, a proof of the era and a record of history. Garis Art Space Jl. Hang Tuah II/2 Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta 12120 T: +62 21 7225785 F: +62 21 7225785 Exhibition will be open from Saturday October 9th, at 5pm. WIB until a date to be announced
RE-HEART at Alila This is an exhibition featuring a group of ten Indonesian artists, architects and photographers, all graduates from the Institute Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ), University of Trisakti and Institute Seni Indonesia (ISI, Yogyakarta). This unique collaboration embraces the beauty of several art mediums, presenting ten sculptures, twenty paintings and ten photographs that convey the artists’ vision of “back to art through one’s heart & soul”. The exhibition will run from the 22nd of October until the 5th of November at Space Lounge, 3rd Floor, Alila Jakarta. Tel: (021) 2316008

flock of like-minded designer toy enthusiasts gather at Plastic Culture shop in the FX Centre in South Jakarta once a month to indulge in their hobby of crafting toys together. From sculpting a character out of paper or resin, painting a plain toy with different features, or simply conversing about the latest creations by international and Indonesian toy designers, the members of the community look and act like a collective of unique characters who have been at this for while. In truth, the Plastic Culture community – which is comprised of professionals and newcomers from various age groups – has only spent a few months together, but their specific passion for designer toys has given them a unique bond. Joshua Artono co-founded the Plastic Culture store – where the community often congregates - with his friend, Win Satya, just a mere 10 months ago. Both were friends since their days together as university students in Los Angeles. Back in L.A, Joshua had previously opened a toy store that specialized in selling Anime (Japanese
art
cartoon) figurines. He says that he opened the store in 2004, but closed it down when he moved back to Indonesia earlier this year. Win, on the other hand, was obsessed with action figures of American comic book characters. He returned a few years earlier prior than his future business-partner, but their differing interests finally crossed paths once more when they met again in Indonesia. Joshua explains, “In the last few years, the designer toy industry was really booming in L.A, and unbeknownst to each other, we were both growing a huge interest in them.” Joshua also says that the two friends never spoke of their shared interest, until they started talking toys back in Indonesia. “We then discovered that we both had become huge fans of designer toys, so we decided to open the store,” explains Joshua. The store was christened Plastic Culture and was located in the FX Center. Joshua says he wanted to create a place where designer toymakers could hang out together to share information and have fun. “We chose it because FX was a happening venue – especially early this year. Everybody went there,” he said. While they did not have any contacts in the Indonesian designer toy community, the store soon began to attract visitors, and before long, a community of like-minded individuals was formed.
The store and community also grew quickly because Joshua had friends in the right places: “Fortunately, I have a lot of friends who work in the media. So we got a lot of coverage in TV and features in magazines” Joshua explains. Joshua, Win, and all other members of the community also wanted to introduce designer toys as an art form to the public. So they went beyond the usual design and art audiences and began doing workshops at private schools and universities. Joshua says that his experience as a business student in LA gives him an enjoyment in showing the students the process of turning ‘nothing into something’. “With designer toy workshops, you get to see how something like clay or plastic can be turned into this amazingly unique looking piece of art.” To expand the community, Plastic Culture will be holding a contest this December on an as-yetundetermined date and venue. Joshua explains “We are also hoping to work with ‘Enjoy Jakarta’ to create an even larger event next year. That would be such a big deal for the community.” by: Marcus Fantom

Scaring the Spirits out of Pontianak By Cracker With hundreds of cannons being fired from either bank of a river that runs through the city, each year a festival in Pontianak of West Borneo celebrates the story of the city’s founding; a story that contains ghosts, pirates, a sultan, and of course, some killer cannons at the centre of it all. 086 | beatmag.com
H
aving moved to Bali from Pontianak some years back, my partner Sophie first spoke to me of the Cannon Festival in her hometown as one of her classic childhood memories. Sounding like an event unlike any other I had experienced in Indonesia I was keen to check it out, so before long, plans were set in motion and we were on our way. We arrived in Borneo (or Kalimantan, as referred to by Indonesians) just two days before the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting. The celebrations of Idul Fitri were also just around the corner so everybody seemed to be holding their breath with anticipation for holidays, family catch-ups and the chance to get back into some daytime dining. Our first stop was to visit a local crew of musicians that were providing entertainment for the festival by turning a cargo barge into a floating stage. Bingo. We now had a perfect place to view the show.
feature
Left: The crowd thickens around a viewing area where the Sultan is seated.
The festival was still 24 hours away but already we could hear what sounded like a battle raging in the distance. Eager to get some visuals and a grip on the surroundings, we jumped on a bike and headed to the Jembatan Tol Bridge where it was a clear view down the river; cannons sticking out from both sides like stitches binding the banks together. Painted with bright yellow and aqua blue stripes to stand out against the muddy water below, they gave a more playful rather than ominous impression, stationed in clumps of four or five and mostly erected in front of mosques that appeared every few hundred meters, with homes, jetties and small cafes clustered between them, jutting out over the water. Plenty of people had already gathered along the bridge, as flames were ignited below and cannons were set off in random succession. The most impressive

attraction though was the roar of sound that followed each shot. Ripping through the night like magnified cracks of thunder in a cloudless sky, we could only imagine the force of blows our ears would face the following evening when the official festival took place. The next day and it was show time. Heading to one of the main pier areas where we were told to join the floating stage, we arrived to see thousands of people crushing themselves as close to the water’s edge as possible, pushing into each other for a better look at the cannons and squeezing around each other across thin bridges that connected platforms and viewing spaces. As the smell of kretek cigarettes and burnt carbide filled the air, it became obvious just how big an event this was for the city. With closed eyes it would have been easy to believe we had been transported to a

war zone. Being fired in sporadic bursts, each wooden cannon shook the roots of anything close by and breached the air with a sound that sent shock waves through your system. Had actual ammunition been shot from the barrels, the festival probably would have entered the Guinness Book of Records for causing the most fatalities at a family event since the Roman amphitheatres lost their spark, and would have wiped out the entire town in its first year. Fortunately for onlookers though there was no projectile, just a huge flame that burst forth from the muzzle and lit up the night with an impressive flash. Before we had a chance to join our rock crew, word had gotten out that I was writing a story and we were unexpectedly invited to join the city mayor, the minister for tourism and the festival manager in their private viewing area. Wearing my black

feature skull T-shirt and jeans for the night suddenly seemed like a bad idea, but before long we were getting the full run down on why the festival takes place, about the founding of Pontianak and how the land was claimed with the use of some well revered cannons. Back in 1771, a sultan by the name of Syarif Abdurahman sailed into the area with a fleet of ships in order to find a new place to settle. Having found the Kapuas River, following its coastal path eventually led him to an area he believed suitable to build. While moored though, nighttime brought with it a plague of supernatural disturbances and unnatural sounds that scared both the children and the workers. Evil ghosts known as ‘pontianaks’ lurked in the area. Famous for preying on children, these savage demonic beings were believed to originate from both the souls of women who died giving birth and babies lost through miscarriage.Beyond dealing with these nightmarish appearances, pirates also began threatening the crew and were known to make use of a nearby area for hiding out and attacking ships.
088 | beatmag.com
feature Believing he could kill two birds with one stone, Sultan Syarif decided to fire into the dangerously occupied area, thus raining his vengeance down for a night of retribution. By morning the sounds of horror had ceased, the spirits fleeing along with any pirates and leaving the land safe for resettlement. On that day, the 23rd of October, the sultan named the city to be Pontianak. Fitting indeed. Before we could go into any more details, the eighth and current sultan Sy Abdurrahman Al Qadrie arrived and after a privileged introduction (with me feeling even more underdressed!) we were shuffled off to join the musicians on the floating stage. This was by far the best seat in the house, sailing along with the main show as huge speaker stacks balanced precariously on
either side of us. Rock bands thrashed out everything from Metallica to local pop favorites and young dancers moved through traditional Malay influenced routines. Cannons continued to be set off and fireworks exploded across the sky above us at every angle. As waves of people filled the shoreline to sing along with the bands, boats also filled up the space between us and the shore, rocking under the weight of excited spectators who gave it their best shot to dance without toppling into the water. With enough noise, lights and commotion being generated to keep the entire city awake and entertained, there was no doubt in my mind that even the most ferocious of ghosts would have fled to quieter waters had they still remained in Pontianak.
After lighting one of the cannons myself I was pretty sure my own soul had been blasted back a few lives to say the least. The entire night was far different to any I had experienced in other parts of Indonesia and certainly stood Pontianak out as a city with a story to tell, whether you happen to believe in stories of scaring away ghosts or not. With satisfied smiles and ringing ears, we headed back to our hotel. It had been a long night of entertainment and despite the cannons, fortunately there were still a few spirits left behind the bar‌ Photos Aruel Photography and Memeth Memo. Boshe Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai no. 89x Tuban – Kuta Tel. 8235508
Tosca gets a sneak preview of the relaxed dining style and great food at huge new venue, Boshe… all before the Grand Opening has even taken place! Lucky girl…
P
ulling up outside the enormous Boshe on Kuta’s Bypass Ngurah Rai, I feel almost a little intimidated. It’s not the sheer size of the place, or even the enormous eagle logo swooping above the entrance, talons outstretched; it’s more the fact that this place states that it’s for “VVIP”s. Am I a very very important person? Am I underdressed?! The answers are ‘No’ and ‘Yes, probably’ – but no matter, because the staff here, in their smart, military-style uniforms, are so friendly and super-professional, my fears are instantly allayed. It seems everyone is given the red carpet treatment here; everyone, is a “VVIP”.
090 | beatmag.com
Boshe provides an all-round entertainment experience. From the huge nightclub with its ultraimpressive and ear-splittingly loud sound system, to the international DJs, top models, 26 private karaoke rooms and lounge, there certainly is a lot on offer. We are shown to the lounge, through a sophisticated reception area, and seated in big comfy sofas. This style of seating covers the lounge area, which, in keeping with Boshe style, is also huge, modern, light and airy, with plenty of cooling AC and floor to ceiling windows. Contemporary wall features and mirrors decorate the room in a stylish and minimalistic fashion, with atmospheric
lighting features at the end of the room, where a billiards table is also being put to use. The bar area provides the focal point of the room and free WiFi is also available. The Grand Opening of the Lounge will take place over two days on the 12th and 13th November, followed by the Opening for the rest of the venue, including the finalized karaoke rooms and club on the 19th November. The Lounge is open from 12pm-1am daily, but the main happenings at the Opening are taking place between 12pm and 7pm, including live music and a choice of anything from the menu for free – you heard me – for free (excluding the Beef/ Pork Ribs)!
of Boshe’s most-ordered dishes so far, cooked up by former Hard Rock chef, Pak Herman. Balinese Pak Herman not only worked in Bali’s Hard Rock, but in Singapore’s also, along with other hotels in both Jakarta and Surabaya. We start with a crisp and tasty, well-dressed Boshe House Salad (40K). The Seafood Fettucini (45K) was up next, which contained crunchy peppers and shaved parmesan to complement the light pasta and seafood taste. Pak Herman cooks up a gorgeous home-made BBQ glaze, which we got to try on the Pork Ribs (105K). Served with coleslaw and fries, the succulent meat literally fell away from the bone, Boshe are aiming and all we needed was a napkin to wipe the BBQ for a relaxed dining glaze smile from our chops afterwards. A range style, therefore all of pizza is also available; we sampled a slice of food is served within the American Favorite (60K), which was heaped the Lounge area. The with the trademark American mass of toppings. To menu is an eclectic end the banquet sweetly, we opted for a gigantic one, serving a range of Western and Indonesian Banana Split (35K), which was as impressive going dishes, and, contrary to what you might think, down as it was on its way to the table. the food is very reasonably priced. The drinks list is, in a word, impressive. Just about every soft Boshe only began operating in August this year, and alcoholic drink you can think of (with the and is an impressive venue. Size wise it has exception, bizarrely enough, of Diet Coke), is become the biggest club in Bali, and its older sister served, along with a never-ending list of House in Jogjakarta is the 2nd largest club in East Java. If Cocktails, ‘Kickers’, ‘Knock-outs’ and Shooters. you haven’t already had the pleasure, put a VVIP These drinks are where you’ll need a little extra date in your diary for the Grand Opening. We’ll weight in your wallet. Take for instance the see you there. cocktail we tried, the ‘Big Boss’; 275K is what it will cost you, but, on a brighter note, this thing is HUGE - made from over twenty different fruit and drink items, apparently - and it will blow your head off! So, if you’re anything like me, this one drink will last you all night long and you’ll still leave more than reasonably merry, 275K seems more reasonable when you think of it this way. One sip of a Big Boss, and we need some alcohol absorption and fast, so we set about ordering some food. Pretty soon, our table is covered with a feast beatmag.com | 091
