P
P
ray for Indonesia is a slogan you’ll see on many people’s social network statuses these passing days. The reason for this phenomenon is the devastating natural disasters that have ravaged this nation this week from the tsunami in Mentawai to the Mount Merapi eruption which both have claimed many lives. Jakarta itself is experiencing its own natural disaster in the form of nonstop rainfall leaving Jakarta in a flooded mess. Let’s all pray that nature gives us all a break and that everything will be better than it was before, so we can enjoy the year’s end which is close gaining upon us. Before we say goodbye to 2010, we still have to get through November, and the lineup of entertainment headed to Jakarta is just as long as last month, maybe longer. One event to remember is the return of Sundaze, which will be held at Ancol with a white dress code for all who come. Check the rest of TBJ to see what’s big and happening in the big durian and mind the puddles.

Sacred and Classic in November By Erza S.T.
N
ovember is pretty much the last working month in a year before we start Christmas festivities again in December. It is a good month to slow down a bit, and focus on work while preparing for the big year-end holiday that is coming soon. To work your Christmas spirit this year, I have found the perfect concert to enjoy. It is sacred, classic and quite rare.
042 | beatmag.com
“Gratias Agimus Tibi” is a concert that is focusing on sacred music in the spirit of the Roman school performances by Cappella Victoria Jakarta, who specialise in this type of performance. Several young people who share the love for sacred polyphony founded this group on 25th September 2005. They chose the name ‘Victoria” for the group as a tribute to a Spanish Renaissance composer, Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548 – 1611) who dedicated his life and works to the Roman Catholic Church liturgy.
Cappella Victoria Jakarta have also chosen the work of oldest living composer, Domenico Bartolucci, selecting such compositions as Missa de Angelis, Magnificat, Jubilate Deo and Ubi Caritas for this concert. Born in 1917, Monsignor Domenico Bartolucci is actually a Catholic priest, who is also the Master Perpetual for the Sistine Chapel Choir in the Vatican. Known as both composer and director, Domenico Bartolucci is considered to be amongst the most authoritative interpreters of Giovanni Pierluigi Da Palestrina.
Cappella Victoria Jakarta focuses on sacred polyphony that was created during the 16th century – particularly the works of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Tomas Luis de Victoria. We can say that sacred polyphony and Gregorian chants are some of the most essential elements of music in the Roman Catholic Church liturgy, especially during masses and celebrations. Based at St. Theresa Catholic Church, this group are already known as one of the best choirs in Jakarta in this genre.
Christian or not Christian, Catholic or not Catholic, this concert is still something to watch, especially when you consider the rarity of this kind of performance in Jakarta. The good news is, this concert is free of charge - however, it is limited. So go get it while it lasts and treat yourself to something unusual, bringing your horizon into a new sphere.
On 6th November, Cappella Victoria Jakarta will perform Da Palestrina works such as Tues Petrus, Assumpta est Maria, Exsultate Deo, Haec Dies and Sicut Cervus. This Italian composer had a lasting influence on the development of church music; his pieces are often seen as the culmination of renaissance polyphony.

feature • What music are you into at the moment? The original soundtrack of Despicable Me, the animated movie. I love it so much! I like the groove of the songs , and I think Pharell did a great job for the soundtrack. The other songs are also funny and make me do some silly dance moves that remind me of the dance scene in the movie. • What was the first record you bought—any interesting story about it? I think my mother was the one that bought me my first record. It was a violin instrumental record, so it enriched my musicality as a kid who's learning to play violin.
• What song/album do you choose to start your weekend? "World's Greatest" by R. Kelly. It motivates me to push my boundaries. Or something from the album of Kaskade, his rhythm gets me going :) • And song/album you choose to end your weekend? Either Chris Botti’s album, ‘Italia’ — it’s very soothing. Or India Arie’s ‘Love and Politics.
My 1st album that I bought (maybe) was Michael Jackson's album. He literally changed my life, especially with the song “Man In the Mirror”. I always remember what he said in it: "if you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make that change". I carry his words in my heart, in everything I do. • What is/are your all-time favorite album/s? Why? Hmm… this is a really tough question... it's hard to choose. I would say Usher, the album Confessions is one of my favourites. One of my favourite Usher songs is "Burn", I think the song always reminds me of the time when I struggled in my life, in many ways, but at the same time, keeping my passion alive. I have tons of favourite albums from Kaskade, Alicia Keys, The Ting Tings, Susan Boyle, Sex and The City soundtracks, India Arie, Beyoncé, and Black Eyed Peas, to Boyz II Men and Michael Bublé. • What was the worst record you ever purchased? I haven’t! :) • Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Tough question… never really thought about it. But come to think of it, maybe a monk. Living in the monastry, in Plum Village in Paris. Travelling the world, giving retreats and lectures, spreading knowledge of living mindfully, knowledge of peace, love and compassion. A monk that writes spiritual books, that touches the hearts of the whole world’s citizens.

Slankers & Metamorfoblus
etamorfosis + Blues = Metamorfoblus.

Other than documenting the metamorphosis of Slank, their musical evolution, and how the band members changed (from using drugs extensively to 100% drug free), it also focuses on a few of their fanatical fans, the so-called ‘Slankers’, and how Slank have changed their lives dramatically.

FIVE MEN, POP-MANOEUVRES, & MANIMAL
054 | beatmag.com
M
enyambung Apologia (2002) serta The Osaka Journals (2005), kongsi musik asal Jakarta Sajama Cut baru saja merilis Manimal beberapa pekan silam.
After their last phenomenal album in 2005, ‘The Osaka Journals’, which was chosen as one of the five greatest albums of the decade by The Jakarta Post, Sajama Cut are back in full effect. A few weeks ago they released their third and latest work: ‘Manimal’. This album contains eight songs and nothing has changed: Sajama Cut are still a genre-free band. They, Marcel Thee (vocals, guitar), Dion Panlima Reza (guitar), Andre Humala (keyboard, synth, percussion), Randy Apriza Akbar (bass), Hans Citra Patria (keyboard, percussion), and Banu Satrio (drums); are as excited as ever before about having a wild adventure with Folk, Rock, Ambient, Sunshine and Baroque Pop: you name it, it’s there, and at the same time, retaining consistency with their absurd English lyrics! Manimal—the name came from an actionadventure 80s tv series—was recorded in their own studio, Movement. And during a whole year process, the whole crew isolated themselves from the public, minimizing any distractions for a great record. Come and see them live on October 30th at Pamulang Square, Tangerang, and stay connected with Marcel Thee and co. by visiting www.sajamacut.com

We caught up with frontman Arian and bass player Sammy before they recently played at Eastern Promise… How would you define your sound now and has it changed over the years since you first got together? Arian - We [still] play heavy rock music, a mix between rock and heavy metal music with a touch of hardcore punk. Black Sabbath meets Motorhead meets Motley Crue meets Black Flag, if you will. We’ve progressed over the years, it shows in our new music arrangements; more complicated, but not complicated for your hearing if you are already a rock fan! Does anyone in the band have other side projects or work that keeps them busy outside of Seringai? Arian - Me, Sammy & Khemod have a onetime project called The Rocky Balboa Trio. More like performance art, we collaborate with a Philippine performance art artist, Yason Banal in one show at the National monument. I’m also trying to do something else with Eben from Burgerkill, like a grindcore/power violence band. I also

talked a bit with Adam from Kubik/Koil, to do a dark folk project. We’ll see. Sammy - Yes. I’m a radio announcer in Jakarta, a commercial v.o talent, a music merchandise shop owner, and a father. So my life outside the band is pretty occupied. Where have you found the most amount of support across Indonesia? Arian - Mostly big cities, and there’s quite a lot from unknown cities, which amazes me. It has to do with our album’s distribution though, which is mostly distributed in big cities, then it starts to spread to secondary cities and small cities. Sammy - They even create their own fan pages in Facebook. Some of them managed to make events and they’ve brought Seringai to play in their city.
onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic. onthemic What sort of a message do you like to push with your music? Arian - Anything, basically. What’s happening with the social life in Indonesia today. We’re not a political band, but we do have political messages. Sammy - I guess we’re trying to be one of those bands that inspire people through their music and lyrics, as an alternative to today’s Indonesian ‘mellow’ music scene. What have been some of your favorite shows so far? Sammy - One time when we went to Medan, we jampacked this cafe/bar. The capacity was around 500-600 people (standing), and about 1000 people showed up! We had to cut out 2 songs because we couldn’t even breathe. It’s now been a while since you first released High Octane Rock, which sold over 15,000 copies as a cassette and earned you a huge amount of fans. Now that you are living in a world of illegal downloads, have you noticed a difference in how many albums you sell, despite still having a growing fan base? Sammy - Yes. But stopping piracy in Indonesia is like stopping a tsunami. It’s unstoppable. So we might as well accept it. We even officially released some singles to be downloaded free of charge in several websites. We would lose in the battle of sales, but as more people download our songs and start to listen to them, we get more gigs and more money. But we also did what we could to create a healthier market by releasing a more collectable album so that people wouldn’t buy the fake one. We once released a box set album with free sticker, postcard, poster, and other bonus materials. It was sold out. All 2500 of them. In the past, touring was a way to promote an album and help to increase sales, is this still the case or do you think it has turned vice versa due to music piracy? Arian - Honestly, we’ve never toured extensively, since we all have day jobs. So it’s always like a weekend short tour, then go back to work. Never like a month full of tour. I’d like to do that, though, it’s one of my dreams. Sammy - For us, touring is not only for promoting our new album, but to get more people to come and see us play. In 2008, your t-shirt design named ‘Badge’ which depicted a freaky looking cop with a bloodied baton was responded to quite harshly by the police force. Police even began arresting fans who were seen wearing the t-shirt on the street. What was your motivation for this
release and how do you feel about the outcome? Arian - The motivation is to get people arrested! Haha! Of course not. It was merely our statement about the police, but then they were offended. I mean, we’re not insulting the police force, but giving them a critique, yes. At the back of the shirt there’s this police force slogan,‘to serve and protect. who?’ Guess it got on their nerves. Sammy - Arian and I had to go to Bandung for an interrogation. We just had to outsmart them in the argumentation to get away. Authorities just cannot take any critique here. It was an artwork based on a song that we wrote about police officers. It was just a reminder to people that we still have dysfunctional and corrupt authorities. We felt bad for the victims. Up until now, the t-shirts are sold out every time we reprint them. Do you see the Indonesian music industry as a place that supports all styles of music, including metal and hardcore, or is it a battle for many bands to be heard if they don’t fit into a certain mold? Arian - No. It’s a battle for rock bands; it’s a battle for bands that want to be different than the mainstream. I never said that being independent is easy. There’s so much work to do, but if you work hard, you will earn it. Sammy - When the media is not giving alternatives to society, the market is not going to have variety either. We are lucky enough to have a pretty good underground scene to keep the music and spirit alive. So what is in the pipeline for you guys at the moment? What can Serigala Seringai (Seringai’s wolfpack - fanbase) look forward to in the near future? Arian - We’re working on a new album now, so look forward for that! Sammy – It’s probably going to be out in March 2011. We also released our first documentary DVD several months ago, and it’s still available in music stores. Have you got any brand new tunes that you are playing already in your live sets? Arian - Of course! They crush people for sure! We have “Program Party Seringai”, “Dilarang Di Bandung”, “Censorshit”, and others. I’m so excited to play these new songs ! Any last words? Arian - I’ll see you all at the SMAN 3 for Anttic, let’s make it a real party and bring all of your female friends! Sammy - See you at the pit!
Other than producing some of Indonesia’s many local celebrities SMAN 3 Jakarta is also known for its annual music festival Anttic, showcasing some of the best local bands around. Seringai will be rocking their message filled songs on 6th November, at the basketball courts of SMAN3. beatmag.com | 057
cd cdREVIEW REVIEW
Sebanyak 14 lagu terdapat dalam album ini, termasuk ‘End Of The Rainbow’, versi orisinil yang ada dalam album kompilasi ‘Jazz In The City with Sandhy Sondoro’. Berbagai tema dituangkan dalam album ini, seperti kehidupan dan kemanusiaan dalam lagu ‘Why Don’t We’, ‘In The Name Of Peace’ dan ‘Down On The Street’. Lagu bertema cinta juga ada, seperti ‘I Don’t Know Where’, dan ‘That’s The Way’. Ingat, Bila Anda menghargai Sandhy jangan beli album bajakan?

The Social Network Drama, Biography. Director: David Fincher. Writers: Aaron Sorkin, Ben Mezrich. Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake. Film “The Social Network” garapan David Fincher (“Fight Club”, “Se7en”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) mengungkapkan ironi betapa Zuckerberg sesungguhnya nyaris tidak punya seorang teman baik pun dalam kehidupan nyatanya. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”, “The Other Boleyn Girl”). David Fincher mengemas biografi Zuckerberg menjadi sebuah tontonan yang padat, sinis, cerdas, sekaligus jenaka. Penulis Aaron Sorkin (“A Few Good Men”, “West Wing”, “Charlie Wilson’s War”) berhasil melantunkan kisah seorang pemuda jenius yang antisosial dengan memikat mudah diikuti oleh semua orang. ‘The Social Network’ has already had many ‘likes’ from the most prominent film critics. The ironic biopic of Mark Zuckerberg is made for everyone to enjoy – thanks to the clever direction by David Fincher (‘Fight Club’, ‘Se7en’, ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’), and sharp screenplay by Aaron Sorkin (‘A Few Good Men’, ‘West Wing’, ‘Charlie Wilson’s War). Zuckerberg, out of a failed relationship, created Facebook, which did not just bring him to speedy worldwide success, and over 500 million “friends”, but also a few enemies. He was assisted by roommate Eduardo Saverin (played excellently by Andrew Garfield, the next Peter Parker in the new ‘Spiderman’ reboot), and lured to a carnal lifestyle by Sean Parker – founder of Napster, who is played by Justin Timberlake. Watch ‘The Social Network’ for its flood of sharp and witty dialogues, and outstanding performances by the actors. This is the kind of great movie that will make you suggest it to your friends. And your “friends”.

feature Megamind (Will Ferrell) adalah superbandit yang selalu gagal dalam usahanya mengalahkan Metro-Man (Brad Pitt), sang superhero. Setelah berbagai taktik digunakan, akhirnya ia berhasil juga melumpuhkan Metro-Man. Masalahnya sekarang, Megamind jadi kehilangan musuh favoritnya. Siap-siap ngakak sampai puas! The off-beat Will Ferrell leads the cast in this new superhero – oh well, super-villain! – movie after Steve Carell’s ‘Despicable Me’ a few months back. Just like ‘Armageddon’ to ‘Deep Impact’, ‘Megamind’ differs from ‘Despicable Me’ by being more blunt, more fantastic, and more adult-oriented (yes, the names Tina Fey and Jonah Hill guarantee that!) Megamind was a super-villain who lost the meaning of his existence after he finally succeeded in defeating his long-time nemesis, Metro-Man (Brad Pitt). A new supervillain, claimed to be more evil and more powerful than Megamind comes to Metro City. It’s up to Megamind whether he wants to keep his reputation as the baddest supervillain in town and save the city or not. Whoever loses, we win!
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger Comedy, Romance. Writer & Director: Woody Allen. Cast: Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto, Lucy Punch, Naomi Watts. You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” bukanlah “orang asing” lagi. Woody Allen introduces us once again to strong, unique, flawed, yet lovable characters in ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’. This ensemble of brilliant actors including the legendary Anthony Hopkins, play quirky characters who make some bad decisions based on life’s ultimate illusions; youth, fame, fortune, and love itself. ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’ will be no stranger to those who are familiar with Allen’s movies; far from Hollywood’s fantasies, and close to our own bittersweet daily lives.

PASTA DE WARAKU Is
it Italian? Is it Japanese? Doesn’t matter. Hey, I happen to like pasta and I also like Japanese food. Why not blend the two and create something tasty? Pasta de Waraku definitely has the answer. It started in Singapore and made its way to Indonesia in 2007. I recently visited their branch in Pondok Indah Mall 2. When you first see this eatery, you will be overwhelmed by the façade. The display of mock plastic food outside the restaurant behind glass which covers the entire outside wall of one side of the restaurant is enough to make you stop in your tracks and your mouth water. The display features row upon row of pasta dishes which are, in typical Japanese style, full of colours and very inviting. Take your pick, there’s something for everyone! As for the ambience, it is casually simple, neat, and bright. Pay special attention to the ‘flying’ slices of tomato on the ceiling!
side salad with Japanese sesame dressing, an Angus beef steak with black pepper sauce, and spaghetti with a special Mentaiko (cod roe) sauce. Believe me; all three of them are wonderfully scrumptious! The steak is especially excellent.
You should also try the Salmon and Tomato Basil Mentaiko Spaghetti (68K). Yet another great creation that is sure to hit the spot. This dish is stunning both in colors and in flavors. The white spaghetti is generously doused in green basil-wafu sauce, topped with red tomatoes and orange salmon pieces. Dazzlingly delectable! I finished my lunch ‘tour’ with a Hanito (35K) or honey toast, a new creation specially made for the Indonesian market, based on a similar version from Pasta de Waraku is proud of their fish-based the Shibuya area in Japan. I decided on the Macha Wafu sauce. It’s considered some kind of a ‘secret and Red Bean Hanito; a sizeable slice of lightly weapon’, if you will; it is healthy, with a non-MSG toasted bread with a touch of honey, topped with seasoning, which is put into almost all of their Macha or green tea ice cream and some red bean dishes. You can really feel that extra ‘oomph’ paste. Add a slice of strawberry, and you have a in your meals. It is what makes the dishes here work of art for a dessert! especially zesty. I know choosing a good place to eat in a crowded I started my food adventure with KoroKoro Tofu shopping mall can sometimes be a daunting (22K). Personally, I think it’s a twist on the good ol’ task. But if you’re in Pondok Indah Mall 2, Grand Tahu Goreng, where small chunks of soft Japanese Indonesia, or Mal Taman Anggrek, I strongly Tofu are complemented well by a Thai-style chili recommend you give Pasta de Waraku a try. Your sauce. Appetizing, indeed! Then I moved on to the tastebuds will thank you for it! Steak and Mentaiko Spaghetti set (88K), which is actually a triple threat of goodies! You have your

aahh… it’s Sunday. For me, it is (mostly) the time to wake up later than usual, while away hours with friends in a cozy café, maybe followed by a bit of retail therapy. For sure, it is time to recharge the batteries before the start of the new week. I called up my friend Cinta, and we decided to meet for brunch and talk about work.Well, more brunch than work...
We did talk about work, but very soon it had to take a back seat as we continued our Sunday culinary adventure with the Fettuccine in Creamy Mushroom Sauce with Smoked Salmon (46K) for Cinta. Meanwhile, I ordered the Salt-Baked Roast Beef Sandwich (45K). Originally, the sandwich was served with ciabatta bread, but when I asked to change it for bretzel (Bavarian-style bread-pretzel dough), they happily did it for me. A plus point for them! The al dente fettuccine is generously To Grand Indonesia Mall I went, to meet up with doused with home made mushroom sauce, and her at Gramedia bookstore. Books and brunch nicely accented with Norwegian smoked salmon. are definitely two of our leisurely loves. And after I particularly like the fact that they have different browsing the books for a while, we ended up breads for their sandwiches; ciabatta, croissant, in this cozy place called Fab Café. Conveniently bretzel, and even oat bun. Definitely something located inside the bookstore, we could see that for everyone. it’s quite the place to be, as we saw families, couples, and groups of friends all coming together We also ordered a couple of their special smoothies. to enjoy their Sunday. You should try the ‘Raising Berries’ (35K); a combo of blackberry, strawberry, blueberry, yoghurt, milk, Fab Café has one great view of the Bunderan HI and honey. And I highly recommend the interestingly (Hotel Indonesia roundabout), and since there named ‘Liver Cleanser’ (32K)! Our brunch turned for that matter). I started my brunch with the into a late, late afternoon chat. And yes, we also Cheese Quesadilla (44K), while Cinta ordered the got some work done too. Cinta and I enjoyed our Roasted Five Spice Chicken Salad (35K). Although time at Fab Café and were unable to leave without they used cheddar instead of mozzarella cheese, sharing the Belgium Butter Waffle with Forest Berry my quesadilla is not bad all, considering I always Compote and Whipped Cream (23K). A sweet way miss good Mexican food from my time in LA! to end the weekend. Fabulous, indeed. Cinta loved her salad; the spicy chicken provided a nice kick to the Caesar dressing on the romaine [budi iskandar] lettuce. A good start to our brunch.

Jakarta Prepares for November
Fashion Week
N
ew York, London and Milan have done it. Now it’s time for Jakarta to run its Fashion Week. Femina Group, on Wednesday last week, announced during a press conference that they’re ready to hold yet another Fashion Week. This year, Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) 10/11 will run from 6th-12th November, and like last year, the event will be held at Pacific Place. This year, JFW carries the theme ‘Styling Modernity’ with the hope that even though the collections that will be showcased will be diverse – from ethnic to contemporary, it will all be packaged with a modern touch. According to Baslir Djamal, Chairman of JFW, this theme was selected because the shows are intended to facilitate a connectivity between the diverse fashions of our archipelago, including the diversity of traditional textiles and modern creations.

During the press conference, the fashion designer line up was announced. This year, Petty S. Fatimah from Femina Group explained that to date there are 113 designers on board, with the possibility of more, including Lenny Agustin, Hartono Gan, Ian Adrian, Defrico Audy, Afif Syakur, Era Soekamto, Kanaya Tabitha, Widhi Budimulia, Valentino Napitupulu and Stephanus Hamy. There will also going to be a fashion show from Cita Tenun Indonesia with the alumni of LPM (Lomba Perancang Mode), including Andreas Odang, Billy Tjong, Chossy Latu, Carmanita, Itang Yunasz, Eny Ming and Denny Wirawan. During this event Ghea Panggabean will also celebrate her 30th year in the industry, and will be instilling a lot of local culture into her designs. Oscar Lawalata, who won International Young Creative Entrepreneur (IYCE) in 2009, will also hold a special show. Taruna Kusmayadi said that Fashion Week helps to convey that the fashion is a serious business here. The event can help national labels to gain more exposure and stand side by side with international brands. Syamsidar Isa added that Indonesia is such a large market, that international brands are competing to come here. JFW is a great opportunity for Indonesian brands to promote themselves on a national and international scale. The opening night of the JFW will be one of the events that people are anticipating the most. It will be opened by ‘A Tribute to Kebaya’ where there will be more than 100 unique kebaya shown as an expression of fashion by Indonesian Women and a tribute to cultural heritage that can cross the ages and maintain its relevancy in today’s modern era. Dewi Fashion Knight, usually one of the most talked about shows during the JFW will showcase five Indonesian designers with Stella Rissa, Priyo Oktaviano and Ali Charisma to name a few. One other event that will be of interest to designers is the Cleo Fashion Awards, where not only will the best retail brands chosen by Cleo magazine and its readers be announced, but there will also be an award for the best young and talented Indonesian designers. The nominees for this award
are Resida, Astrid, Vahada, Stare A Bit (STAB), Noonio, Twentyforteen and a special mention goes to Cotton Ink. The LPA Award (Lomba Perancang Aksesoris) will also take place; it will be interesting to see the newest talent in the accessories arena and where the trends will lead them too. Sublime Silhouette by Steven Huang
Text and Pictures by Erza S.T.
eing young and talented is not a surprise anymore these days; however to be young, talented and know how to do it right with taste, is something that we don’t find easily. That is why, to go and witness Steven Huang’s “Sublime Silhouette” fashion show at the end of September at Fountain Lounge, Grand Hyatt, was such rejuvenation for the eyes. This 27 year old designer surely understands the essence of the female human body. His designs on that day were marked, not by a frugal austerity in lines, but instead in a feeling of wholesomeness that is achieved from a deceiving simplicity, where a basic body envelope is carefully deconstructed and reconstructed.
076 | beatmag.com
In his hands, the garment is made to enhance and strengthen the natural beauty of the body. The material used also reflects this need for simplicity, both in texture and color. Thus, the preponderance of basic black, white and grey hues in neutral textures is shown in his collection. From 90s deconstruction inspiration (including the mini skirt that is back on trend now) to his version of a modern cheongsam, all are experimental: daring yet promising! I am definitely keen to see what is next from this new, young and uber-talented fashion designer. [Erza ST]

Danjyo Hiyoji Opens First Flagship Store W
hen you first see the title of this article, you may think, “But, hasn’t Danjyo Hiyoji’s flagship store at Level 1 been open for a few months already?” Well, yes, but, Danjyo Hiyoji had their official Grand Opening only recently, on October 13th at Level One Project, East Mall, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town. It is part of Danjyo Hiyoji’s growth strategy for the Jakarta area. Positive responses and sales consistency have been received ever since the collection was placed in cooperation with some local and overseas stores. Now the Danjyo Hiyoji collection is available at Level One, Happy Go Lucky Bandung, Harvey Nichols Jakarta and Blackmarket Singapore. Leftfoot Singapore and Bali are the next targets for the end of 2010. Danjyo Hiyoji was launched in 2001 as an independent local label by Dana Maulana and Syarifah Liza Mashita in Jl. Cililin Raya. Primarily a women’s wear label, in 2009 it merged with Rama Adrianus Dauhan’s Diyoji menswear, and evolved into Danjyo Hiyoji. The label stated: “The original concept for us was to create exciting fashion items through domestic
productions, which would replicate global trends rapidly. Customers could get their hands on the latest items for a reasonable price.” At the grand opening, Danjyo Hiyoji’s latest collection “The Escape” was introduced through a visual presentation. If only it was displayed in a fashion show, I would have been able to capture it on camera to show you. Thankfully though, special models did wear just some of the collection – special, because rather than professional models, actors and actresses became the clothes horses, including Jessica Iskandar, Olivia Jensen and Ikhsan Himawan. Nia Dinata visited the new store too and was spotted purchasing some items. In fact, Nia Dinata wasn’t the only enthusiastic visitor; in less than an hour of observing the shop, I saw items flying off the shelves, leaving only empty displays behind. So congratulations to Danjyo Hiyoji and your Grand Opening. May your success keep Indonesian fashion moving forwards! Rizka, editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude

LASTIC COMMUNITY
Sometimes the internet is the best place to get people of the same interest together. Witness “Klastic” - A community that celebrates the hobby of collecting and exploring the wonderful world of plastic and toy cameras - the kind that are unique in their often colorful appearance but can still be used to take real photographs, instead of simply being a mere prop to “toy” with. The members met through a thread on “Kaskus”, a well-known local internetbased forum, and soon began arranging meet ups and showcases together. “Klastic” was formed on 7 December 2008 - when the first seeds were planted through a forum thread titled “Kaskus Plastic & Toy Camera Community [gallery and discussion]” - which they abbreviated as “Klastic” and soon adopted as their community’s name. The first posters to the thread were a few enthusiasts who had wanted a place to simply share information, show the photographs they took, and trade tricks of the trade.
080 | beatmag.com
art According to 18-year old Sumarno Sandiarjo – who prefers to use his nickname of Mono, and is Klastic’s Bandung regional Vice Public Relations Officer and Event Organizer – the name Klastic came from Wendi Faiz, a forum member, while the thread in Kaskus was first created by Idham Sembodo, another current community member. Renaldy Fernando Kusuma – the 21-year old community’s official leader – explains that the thread itself originated from someone who was selling a toy camera in Kaskus’ “buy and sell” section. “People were intrigued by it – more so than on the other things that were being sold in the forum. So the main thread itself seemed like a natural extension.” The thread soon interested other forum members who began to take the hobby to heart. Pages of the threads quickly rose with hundreds of new posts everyday from people who were beginning to take interest in the cute looking gadgets which had the ability to produce such artistic pictures. The community also grew with the addition of more and more new plastic and toy camera models, which added even more “color” to the already burgeoning hobby. If the artistic photos of “Lomo” cameras already fascinated so many enthusiasts, the attractiveness of a similarly economically priced camera with its additional bright colors and odd-shapes, seems like a no-brainer. The members soon felt the limitations of conversing solely through the net, and arranged an official group gathering. Mono explains that it was in January that all of the members, who had been actively interacting through the forum, first met in the real world. They came from various parts of Indonesia, including Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Palembang, Batam, Malang, and Yogyakarta and met at a venue located in Bandung. The only requirement needed to join the community was to have a set of “lo-fidelity” cameras, which meant cheap cameras with prices as low as Rp.5.000 (although some do reach the Rp.6 million mark). After that, the members of Klastic begun to engage in various group activities, including photo hunts in various locations in the country. These locations included the well-known tourist spots of Braga in Bandung and the Monas (National Monument) in Central Jakarta.
A member of Klastic’s Bandung region, Naluri Yuliani, says that every member has different taste in objects. “Some of us like to take panoramic pictures, some take ‘human interest’ pictures, and some even take pictures of models.” By May 2009, the community finally decided to hold their debut exhibition at a venue called Koffka in South Jakarta. There, they held video screenings and slides of the photographs and the people behind the community and also displayed many of the photos that have been taken over the last year. There was also a workshop for novice users on how to use plastic and toy cameras, as well as underwater (toy) cameras. Klastic also produced their own merchandise, including shirts and pins, which also came in handy in spreading the word about the hobby around. By then, a 100 people had declared themselves members of the community. Renaldy says proudly, “Today, every region (Jakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Balikpapan, Bandung, Medan, Yogyakarta, and Solo) has an average membership of 150 people and we don’t treat each other solely as ‘members’ of a community, but as family. That is why we tend to do a lot of things – even outside of cameras.” The community was not limited to using only toy or plastic cameras, though. Some of the photos were also taken using a “Pinhole” camera, which refers to an extremely simple camera which has no lens, and only a small-sized aperture in which the light needed to take a picture is able to travel. These Pinhole cameras can be made at home, from a used box or even tin can. Mono explains that, in terms of technique, plastic/ toy camera owners require no special skills. “As long as you are able to reload a film into the camera, everything else is easy – You just point, perhaps try to find good lighting, and you’re set to go,” he says, before laughing and admitting shyly that he has a good collection of effeminate pink and yellow cameras. Renaldy adds that he is proud of the openness the community endorses. “It’s about affordable cameras – and an affordable hobby. So we’ve always hoped that the people who join us, do so, not because it’s a trend, but because it’s their passion to create something out of nothing.”

Traveling Phuket Phuket, Thailand is getting closer all the time. David Trauts takes a closer look for TBJ.

P
huket is a beautiful island of rolling tree-filled hills, white sandy beaches that stretch for miles, large bays and hidden coves. Driving along the coast on the western side of the island the road goes up and down over hills from one bay and beach to the next and at every turn arrives at a new settlement, some large and some small. Phuket really is a beautiful island. The Beat took off last month from Jakarta and went looking for the more up-market end of town. The way I see it, there are two ways of going on holiday in Phuket; as a single traveler with your mates, or as a couple. I went with my partner. As a single traveler the bar life is pretty intense and the availability of pole bars that line just about every main street of every town are a good indication of what’s on offer in that department, but the question is what is there on offer if one goes as a couple? There is a lot actually away from the bars in Phuket, even though they aren’t off limits to couples either, of course. There’s a lot of space and a breathtaking landscape that’s home to some of the most amazing villas and resorts that money can buy. There’s also some great dining in all styles and cuisines from low to high-end, shopping to keep your wardrobe and homewares selection complete, beautiful clean beaches that stretch for miles and the crystal clear waters of the Andaman Sea. Patong Beach on the west coast is still the center of all things tourism on Phuket and the hub for most tourism activities and tourists visiting the island. There are a plethora of accommodation options from high

to low and streets of restaurants and shopping that stretch for miles. Patong Beach is the action hot spot and nightlife center of Phuket and if it’s girls, ladyboys or just a big night out that’s the place to be. (A trip to Bangsa Road is always a one-time must). Up in the Kamala/Surin beach areas, the speed is a gear slower and for many couples and people looking for a more normal pace, it can offer a relaxed alternative. Loads of dining options are available along the beach in Surin both day and night. Check Taste, Catch and At Panta Beach Clubs, or try Aussie run Diver and later on a drink or tapas at Studio Lab. Not far away in Bangtao just before the entrance of the Laguna Complex is the famous Siam Supper Club where you will find not only
great food and an enormous selection of quality wines but also owner Sean, who’s always ready for a chat and suggestion on the food and wine. Rockfish restaurant in the southern corner of Kamala beach is another great dining spot from breakfast till late. Paresa Resort also in south Kamala has an excellent Italian and Thai restaurant - well worth a visit. Taxis in Phuket are different. There don’t appear to be many taxis using meters and all trips we had in both cars and tuk tuks the prices were negotiated before getting in. It’s recommended to get a hotel transfer when arriving at the airport to save you some hassles.
Air Asia flies daily from Jakarta to Phuket. www.airasia.com For more info go to www.phuket. com – there you will find loads of accommodation and general info.

Bali’s fashion designers show their wears again in Laguna Resort
T
he annual Fashion Tendance fashion show organized by APPMI Bali (Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs Association Bali’s Chapter) was held on Sunday evening at The Laguna Resort in Nusa Dua. The theme of this year’s event was ‘Cita Di Alam’, loosely translated as ‘A Taste of Nature’ which did have an effect on some of the designs presented – some a little too much an effect.

New designer and former model, Cherry Scherzinger, was up first and brought with her a taste directly off the street; a street possibly called D’Street being heavily influenced by a brand of a similar name, but was probably the most viable collection on the catwalk that night. Strangely enough the next designer up had the name of D’Label which I found out later was actually a men’s collective effort from the APPMI designers and was also obviously influenced by d’squared too, but on this occasion didn’t match up to Cherry’s exciting wear.
Cherry Scherzinger
From that point it was back to APPMI Bali members and the two imports, one local, Dejong and the other a foreign local resident, Espen Sarlberg. The designs this year were toned down somewhat in comparison with previous occasions. Most designers were less flamboyant and appeared to be looking for more practicality than the personal fame and ego gratification of past years. Does this mean a more mature designer group? Or does it mean a less interesting fashion collection? Maybe a bit of both in the end, but at least by being more practical there’s a stronger chance of the fashion being more functional and wearable. And with all that, a chance of them being more viable at the place where it counts – the cashier.

This year’s Balinale Film Festival 2010, the fourth in succession, was another great success. Starting off with welcome drinks and dinner at Warisan restaurant in Seminyak for all the foreign directors in town for the festival and then the opening and premier of Eat, Pray, Love on the next evening at Galeria Cineplex 21 in Kuta, where all the festival films were shown for the next five days, this year’s Balinale had a great atmosphere and with plenty of community spirit.
popular flick at the festival was the facebook story called Social Network, which won the best feature award of the Balinale.
The films were shown at all times of the day and night and featured movies, short films and documentaries from all over the world.

One of the most anticipated films and premiers was the Eat, Pray, Love feature that, as everyone knows was shot around Bali, and with the Balinale organizers and many folk from all over town involved with the making of that Julia Roberts movie it gave the proceedings that much more of a Bali community spirit and feeling of participation. The Eat, Pray, Love movie has been very well received in the community and is still playing at Galeria cinema now. “It appears to be giving hope to the Balinese people, hope that all is fine in Bali. It’s the beautiful scenery and vistas making people feel that the tourism etc will continue ok,” said Rudolph Dethu, social commentator on all things Bali to The Beat Daily at the gala premier. f you’re one of those people who’ve only ever visited Eikon during a night-time, whistle-stop tour of Legian Street, you wouldn’t be the only one. With the amount of bars and clubs along that stretch with touts galore and bass beats that rattle round your chest cavity, it’s probably not the first place you’d think of for an evening meal. So when I went to Eikon at around 7pm last Tuesday, I was given a genuine, fantastic surprise. No crowds, no pumping speakers, no edging your way through a crowd in the darkness. Just a beautiful bar/ restaurant, with a few groups of diners tucking into their food. I sat at the bar, looking round at the quirky wall art, stylish chandelier above the staircase and the candlelit tables, with restaurant manager, Suzanne Foster. Suzanne is easily one of the most positive and involved managers I’ve come across yet on this culinary journey round Kuta and Seminyak. Genuinely excited about the food review and with a real belief in Eikon’s

food, she tells me how much they have in store for us; and admittedly, at that point, I was silently commending her for her enthusiasm about a presmash up burger. How wrong I was. Sipping on a gorgeous and very healthy fresh juice, I’m introduced to Chef Mohamad SS – otherwise known as Mas Mamad – who was flown in from his previous job in Jakarta by Eikon, purely because of his talent in the kitchen. Not only are Mas Mamad and the kitchen staff open to requests from guests that aren’t on the menu (providing the kitchen has the ingredients), but they also cater for private parties in the garden area of Eikon. When Suzanne said she had a lot in store for us, she wasn’t kidding. Plate after plate of immaculately presented dishes arrive at our table, providing a huge and delicious showcase of Eikon’s best cuisine. First up were the Mexican Quesadillas
(30K). Rather than the usual thin tortillas, these quesadillas came in a thick wrap, stuffed full of chunky pieces of garlic infused chicken, melted cheese and a mouthwatering layer of caramelized onions. Remaining on a Mexican theme, a plate of Nachos (30K) arrived also, which were light and crispy, with a meaty, chile topping, melted cheese and a dollop of sour cream. From the Asian section of the menu came the Fried Oxtail Soup (55K). Pieces of tasty oxtail in a spicy mixture of kecap manis, onion, garlic, chili and peppers were served with a separate broth and white rice. This dish is popular with locals in particular. My personal favourite soup however, was an amazing Thai Tom Yum Goong (40K), a sour and spicy broth with a warm but not overpowering heat from the spices used, containing prawns, squid, snapper, mushrooms, tomatoes and lemongrass.

The huge Chicken Schnitzel (55K) was in breadcrumbs, topped with a bolognaise style sauce and melted cheese – an ideal hangover cure. Grilled Squid (50K) was the final taste test of the review, which, along with all other fish and seafood on the menu, came from Jimbaran Bay – an example of Eikon’s endeavour to use only the highest quality ingredients. Served with crispy crème potatoes, the squid was cooked in a ginger, garlic, onion and chili combo to give it a tasty kick.
There’s so much going on with Eikon’s restaurant at the moment. The menu is expanding, and desserts such as Pancakes with Strawberries, Cream and Fresh, Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream will be available soon. Upstairs is also going to be developed into a better seating area – an ideal Moving on to the main courses, we really enjoyed vantage point for watching the ‘interesting’ sights the Pork Ribs, which were only 65K. Funtastic Fantasy
uys now have an even better reason to go to Eikon every Thursday. Every week, international models will be prowling along the bar to the sounds of the resident DJ, wearing only bikinis, which are sure to unleash all those raging male hormones. Things may get a little wild, but be ready for a sexy, steamy party.
hings may have started slowly at 88 Bali, but as the night moved on the party finally came alive to the thumping beats spun out by DJ Lanang. To liven things up, models strutted their stuff on the catwalk to rhythms of progressive house, changing the pace of the night to a more upbeat and sensual atmosphere.

pening the night was DJ Mamsa doing his best to bring in the crowds, who seemed reluctant to party, probably due to the distant lightning flashes and potential downpour. Midnight brought on the main event featuring a friendly DJ battle between DJ Heidi and DJ Heartthrob, which slowly brought in the punters one by one, yet still not enough to fill the dance floor. he heavens just don’t seem to be giving Bali T a break, with rain falling almost every night, but like always, that’s not enough to keep the clubbers from partying. Many came to see Guest DJ Goodgrip spin his best house set on the decks, and the monsoonal downpour passed unnoticed.
