s TBJ gets sent off to the printers and the final touches of the magazine are put in place, we say hello and goodbye to the short visit of America’s president Barack Obama. It seems that Jakarta isn’t only inviting to international musicians but also inviting enough for Obama to return to the place he once grew up in - even if it was for only 18 hours. TBJ would also like to say happy Thanksgiving to those of you who celebrate it, and if you’re wondering where to have your Thanksgiving dinner, check out the food scoop section for some ideas. Jakarta has been bombarded with quality, international performers lately (Simply Red pictured here for one) and that looks set to continue in the coming year, but for now, as the year’s end inches ever closer, that appears to be slowing down. But there’s still plenty of local action to take care of you - see what the next fortnight has in store in the What’s On and Here Now sections of TBJ.

Enjoying Two Geniuses in Concerts By Erza S.T. 044 | beatmag.com

W

e have much to anticipate in the last two weeks of November. Two genius composers from different eras are treating Jakarta to their well-renowned music. Representing Mozart from the classical era, one of these composers is going to have his music celebration at the famous Aula Simfonia, while the contemporary classical composer Ananda Sukarlan is going to have his music celebration at Erasmus Huis auditorium. Both are great composers, and surely this could be a great remedy for the soul amidst the unfriendly weather and natural disasters. Prolific composer Ananda Sukarlan really is at the peak of his career. So far, he has composed more than 100 works for solo voice or duet, dozens of choir works, 2 cantatas (Ars Amatoria and Libertas) and 3 operas (Ibu, Mengapa Kau Culik Anak Kami? and Pro Patria). On this upcoming 25th November, Ananda plans to show his extensive yet beautiful vocal compositions to Jakarta’s audience. For this intensive concert, he has chosen 25 students of Musicasa Studio who will perform around 50 songs as a retrospective of Ananda’s achievements as Indonesia’s most prominent composer up to today. Musicasa Studio, where the performance is coming from is known as one of the most important vocal training studios in Indonesia. Lead by conductor Tommy Prabowo and baritone Joseph Kristanto (who has intensely collaborated and sung most of Ananda’s music), Musicasa has produced some of the best singers in Indonesia today. Joseph here also inspired Ananda to write many works involving baritone voice. His contagious passion for Ananda’s music is now passed to his students. For this concert, Ananda is invited to coach and give them a deep insight of his musical and artistic ideas as well as backgrounds of his vocal works to better their understanding of the music. New, young and talented singers such as Satriya Krisna, F.X. Budi Prakoso, Daniel Christianto, Mirta Hartono and many others will bring Ananda’s songs to life, including some based on poems such as the works of poets from Sapardi Djoko Damono, Goenawan Mohamad, Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana, Hasan Aspahani, to Walt Whitman and Lord Byron. Taking place at Erasmus Huis, this concert is a must for all Ananda Sukarlan’s loyal followers. Equally genius and renowned for his memorable tunes, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been recognized as one of the world’s most famous composers. He composed Bastien und Bastienne

– his first opera at the tender age of 12. On this upcoming 27th November, the Reformed Oratorio Society from Singapore together with Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra lead by Dr. Billy Kristanto will pay homage to some of Mozart’s most famous compositions such as ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’, ‘Piano Concerto no. 21’ and ‘Mass in C Minor’. At this concert, the Reformed Oratorio Society from Singapore together with soloists such as Elsa Pardosi, Suminah Kusuma, Jethro Rachmadi and Aldo Lammy will perform in this powerful yet unfinished mass composition. The Reformed Oratorio Society was founded by Rev. Stephen Tong (the person behind the Aula Simfonia) who has been a professor of theology for professional seminary students for more than 25 years with a purpose to encourage Christian singers, choirs and musicians to rehearse and perform works of sacred music from the great composers to the highest standard. As the result, there are now Oratorio Societies in Jakarta, Surabaya, Singapore and Taipei for these purposes. If you are interested to know more on the story behind the ‘Simply Mozart’ concert program, then you can come earlier around 6.45PM to follow their pre-concert lecture. Who knows, it may even give you the answer on why “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” has become so globally famous and memorable.

emikian JRX, punk rock prince charming, fungsionaris beduk Inggris Superman Is Dead, sumringah mengawali mukadimah tentang prestasi luar biasa yang diraih grup musiknya. And that’s the beauty of it.

Conscious punk rockers, yes sir. Simak terus manuver pintar-berbahaya berikutnya dari Superman Is Dead di situs mereka: www. supermanisdead.net [RUDOLF DETHU]

A few weeks ago, the biggest punk-rock band in Indonesia, Superman Is Dead, reached a significant record; one million fans on Facebook. This phenomenon is considered even more impressive due to the lack of SiD’s appearances on television, proving that plenty of blockrockin’ concerts and a little word of mouth is all it takes for success on this scale. JRX, the drummer and spokesman for the band stated that their interaction with outSiDers/ Lady Rose (their special name for the fans) is not always about the music or promoting their current activities. Sometimes discussing humanities and ecology (“in a few cases the discussions can get very heated”) could be on the agenda, “but that’s the beauty of it,” he added. According to JRX, Bobby Kool (vocal, guitar), and Eka Rock (bass, backing vocal) the Facebook success only goes to show that television is not everything, and that you don’t need to move to Jakarta (a.k.a. the centre of Indonesia’s entertainment industry) to find stardom. There’s no such thing as Jakartacentric, and their intense and caring relationship with fans on Facebook has proven this theory. Stay connected with Superman Is Dead by checking out their website:supermanisdead.net. or check search them on fb, of course.

NEW RELIGION – AI TUMBUAN Dari sederetan DJ Indonesia, hadir nama Ai Tumbuan aka DJ Ai.

The Beat sangat memberi rekomendasi untuk “New Religion” – Ai Tumbuan ini.

PIZZA MARZANO T

here’s something about pizza that brings people together. I think the best way to enjoy pizza is when you share it with a bunch of friends and/or family members. This very popular Italian dish has won the hearts of people of every nation, creed, and culture from all over the world, and Pizza Marzano is no exception. This UK-based eatery (known as Pizza Express over there) has been serving excellent pizzas, pastas and more to a legion of loyal fans in Jakarta since 2006. So far, Pizza Marzano has 6 branches in the capital: Grand Indonesia, Senayan City, Sudirman Citywalk, and FX malls, as well as Kemang, and Formule 1 hotel Menteng. In case you’re wondering, the name ‘marzano’ comes from a type of tomato that is used to make the sauce for their pizzas.

Recently, some friends and I visited their restaurant at Senayan City mall. One of us had just got a promotion, so we were in a celebratory mood. A refreshing jug of Sangria (275k for 100cl) started off the jolly evening. For an appetizer, we ordered some Panini Tacchino con Mozzarella (28k) - turkey ham and melted mozzarella on grilled ciabatta bread. This dish is actually a part of their recent “Eat, Pray, Love” movie tie-in promos. Before long, we’d finished our tasty starters and couldn’t wait to get our hands on the delizioso homemade pizzas! Since there were a bunch of us, we decided to share a couple of their signature pizzas. An unusual rectangular pizza, Calabrese (95k) caught our attention. And it certainly did not disappoint. The bigger, thinner, and crispier pizza is topped with Italian beef sausages, pepperoni, fresh mozzarella and watercress toasted in basil Genovese pesto sauce, and finished with Calabrian oregano and grana padano. A good kick of sliced jalapeno peppers is a pleasant addition to this celebration of taste! We also ordered their award-winning Trilogy pizza (90k).This is a creation of Pizza Marzano’s head chef Endang, which won the Asian Pizza Olympics in 2007. It is easy to see what made this one special. A winning combination of smoked salmon, barbecued beef, turkey arrabiatta, olives, capers, red onions, mascarpone, grana padano, and my own personal favourite topping, sun dried tomatoes is a definite must-try! My group had planned to continue tonight’s celebration with some karaoke action (I think the sangria might have had some effect on our desire to perform), but before that there was still some room for desserts. We chose to order some Tiramisu (43k) and Cheese Cake (40k). Sweet, soft, and smooth; I’m telling you, it was a great way to end our excellent dinner. A good evening was had by all. The pizzas certainly did their job of bringing my group of friends closer together, and it all ended up with a high note - literally... At the karaoke joint! A budding chef himself, Glenn explained quite a bit about the food. He suggested that I should start with the cream champignon soup (11k).That’s mushroom soup to you and me. I could tell that it was freshly made, with a good blend of mushroom, cream, and some garlic and chicken stock. A piece of French bread complimented this warm soup. Next up, I decided to try the chicken wing with barbeque sauce (19k). The sweet tang of the barbecue sauce blends well with the pieces of chicken wing. With some mashed potatoes on the side, it’s a good way to prep oneself for what’s to come. It was time to savour the main event: the famous roast beef (25k). A simple dish; I can see how it has become the love of many foodies. ‘New’ is actually the correct word for Warung Roastbeef. Opened just recently, it is the brainchild of famous chef Chris Waas. Some of you may remember his previous roast beef venture, Arroser. If so, than you will be somewhat familiar with this one too. This time he is bringing roast

What more is there to say when it comes to Harry Potter? It’s the most popular best-selling fiction fantasy novel series ever, and its movie adaptations so far have won over even more fans besides those who loyally read the books. This last sequel from the seventh book will be divided in two parts; part 2 to be released in July 2011. Official trailers for Part 1 have been released for a while, and there we can see how David Yates (director since the fifth film) has managed to capture the darker, more thrilling atmosphere from the more ‘grown up’ Harry Potter books. It surely will be exciting as a motion picture, especially with greater adventures and actions from the last sequel. Oh and pay attention! One or two past mysteries will be resolved here, along with some characters from previous sequels making return cameos. With a 3D version available, you can certainly hope for awesome magical battle scenes to jump out of the screen this time!

Unstoppable Action/thriller. Director: Tony Scott. Writer: Mark Bomback. Cast: Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, and Rosario Dawson.

Jangan lupa minum minuman berenergi sebelum nonton! Another collaboration for director Tony Scott and his muse Denzel Washington I hear you say? But hold on, this time the Oscar-winning big guy will share the screen with young and charming Chris Pine (‘Star Trek’) and exotic stunning actress, Rosario Dawson (‘Sin City’, ‘Eagle Eye’), so it might be worth more than a passing glance. As usual with Scott’s films, you can expect a fast paced film with adrenalinestimulating tensions and explosive action along the way… this time from chasing an unmanned runaway train carrying poisonous and explosive chemicals before it wipes out a city. So put on your seatbelt because the ride is speedy!

The Presence Drama/horror. Writer & Director: Tom Provost. Cast: Mira Sorvino, Shane West, Justin Kirk. Jarang bukan menemukan film sejenis begini? Keindahan sinematografi “The Presence” malah bakal bikin kita makin merinding. The Presence may arouse your curiosity with its promise of a “darkly romantic ghost story”. What kind of film will it turn out be? Well, this is the debut of writer-director Tom Provost, but the name Mira Sorvino (‘Mimic’) should ring a few bells, along with Shane West (“A Walk to Remember”) as the haunting apparition. The storyline is mind-gripping drama that will creep you out with its horror element. There’s nothing like a ‘Ghost’ style romance here, so forget the ‘Unchained Melody’ song and get ready for a noir-style, darker and creepier affair!

enthusiasts, customers and the designers. If last year there was a special show at the opening of the JFW which featured a collaboration between Indonesia’s and India’s designers, then this year there were more special shows. Other than A Tribute of Kebaya on the opening night, there was also a special show, Ghea 30 Years Dedicated to Fashion and a collaboration between Oscar Lawalata with English textile designer Laura Miles with a fashion show titled Weaving the Future. JFW did not only show well known designers’ collections but also those of the upcoming and talented young Indonesian designers’ collection. Also, to show their support toward these young designers through CLEO Fashion Awards 2010 that awarded talented young designers to recognize their achievements. This year instead of the Lomba Perancang Mode (LPM) there will be Lomba Perancang Aksesoris (LPA). This competition is hoped to provide a venue for incubating creativity for these designers to grow their talent and to connect them with the media, stakeholders, people within the industry so that they can gain more exposure locally and globally. For the first

The Femina Group also took into consideration the current situation of Indonesia. At times of calamity, this year’s JFW also hoped to gain some donations from the visitors of JFW through Be Fashionable and Caring program. Through this program punters could donate various amount of money (from around Rp 25,000 to Rp 150,000) per fashion show where in this show you they got the VIP treatment and VIP seating too. Cool huh? Not to mention, several designers who participated in JFW also donated one of their collection to be given to one lucky person that donated their money to this program. This shows that fashion is not just about style and glamour but it’s also about humanity and caring for one another.

Sneakerhead Painting Exhibition Sneakers are the theme and subject matter in Dodit Artawan’s paintings. Dodit is indeed a lover of sneakers… One may even say that he is a ‘sneaker-freak’ or a ‘sneaker-head’. The range of sneakers that we see in Dodit’s canvases actually represents his personal collection. Love Me or Die

While observing Entang Wiharso’s solo exhibition ‘Love Me or Die’, guests are taken on a excursion of visual esthetics, which will leave them in awe with any number of multiple interpretations. The works of art cover both the wild and the zany, whilst blurring the lines between fact and fiction. The exhibition is filled with images of emotion, passion, incidents and imagination - all tied to the theme of love.

The exhibition ‘Love Me or Die’ is being held from the 21st until the 31st of December at the Galeri Nasional Indonesia. The love inspired theme chosen for this exhibition by Entang Wiharso is not the soppy kind of love often acquainted with romance of two people, but the ugly side of the emotion where a person can love something to a point of obsession or fanaticism; a love that only glorifies ownership.

078 | beatmag.com

Entang visualizes his works in this exhibition using figurines of humans as well as animals, incorporating them onto wall installations and also onto fences in the exhibition area. Another form of his thought provoking pieces uses a statue covered in an animal skin motive to depict how people are still cast into certain roles because of their skin color. Apart from his large artistic installments, Entang is also featuring several of his paintings showcasing a panorama of naked human figures with smirks on the faces. Entang’s views of the reality of himself, people and the world around us is seen not only of what we see on the surface but is also deep with details of the works presented in this exhibition. Our mundane understandings of love and passion are given a different angle of view which will leave us pondering if love is the ultimate emotion we seek in life.

“MELANCHOLIC EGO IN THE COLORFUL SONG OF AGONY”

Prihatmoko Catur 10 November– 10 December 2010 Srisasanti Arthouse Jl. Kemang Raya no. 81, Jakarta Selatan,

S

risasanti Arthouse presents a solo exhibition titled ‘Melancholic Ego in the Colorful Song of Agony’, featuring two-dimensional artworks from Prihatmoko Catur, a young art graduate from the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) in Yogyakarta. Prihatmoko Catur (fondly called Moki), is displaying about fifteen paintings. The exhibition is curated by Fery Oktanio. Prihatmoko Catur aka Moki, was born in Wonosari, the capital of Gunung Kidul Regency, Yogyakarta. Moki has always had an interest in music, especially the nuances of melancholy, and selects some of his favourite songs to create new concepts from the lyrics of the song and translating to canvas. This synergy has produced a unique method that differs from the various processes of creating works of art as we know them today. The method used to create his works Moki describes as ‘visual musicalization’. By adapting the lyrics of the songs into an independent narrative, it

becomes possible to represent them in a visual form. By creating markers for the audience to connect to where the song came from, he uses the lead singer of the music group of the selected song as the ‘major figure’ for his visual narratives on canvas. This method he calls the first phase. The second phase, is returning to the songs to which they refer to, where the enjoyment process can be felt along with the songs. From this combined enjoyment method, Moki’s aura can be felt, conveyed, and found within. Moki wanted to share the feeling of melancholy that he felt while playing the songs to the audience, making it a new concept, first visualized on canvas, and then back to enjoying it with the music. This is a bold and interesting attempt to show the remarkable synergy of musical intuition married with his technical ability in art.

theSCOOP India Makes a Home in Bali The Indian government announced the approval of the opening of a Consulate General of India (CGI) on Bali. The Consulate General of India will strengthen India’s traditional bonds with Bali and also improve its protocol, commercial and consular presence on the island. This will provide an impetus to the commercial interaction between India and Bali in Indonesia. The CGI in Bali will also be beneficial to the local PIO community (people of Indian descent), which comprises of over 230 families within Bali itself, apart from some more Indians and PIO families in neighboring East and South Kalimantan. An Indian cultural centre was established in Bali in 2004, which has done exemplary work in propagating yoga, Indian culture and performing arts. With the increasing popularity of Bali as a holiday destination, the number of Indian tourists arriving in Bali has also swelled to about 20,000 this year. This has put enormous pressure on the meager resources of the Indian cultural centre in Bali. (The Beat Daily)

s Halloween night this year fell upon a Sunday, there were options for the whole weekend to celebrate the night of frights. The array of events varied from international DJs enticing the night’s dressed up freaks with their beats to hard rocking, guitar thrashing performances. The costumes and jackal lanterns were probably the only things resembling a traditional Halloween night (or Hallow-eve in this case). Here’s a rundown on most of the best events of this year’s Halloween.

Bali Today Show Nanci Holiday Forty five thousand expatriates are wandering them there hills and beaches, tired of crying in their soup over those oh-so-dramatic, tear-wrenching television soaps. the Time has come, for The ‘Bali Today’ Show to stimulate the intellect and put static in the attic. Who’s to blame for all this commotion? Hey! it’s Nanci Holiday. S.B. Curtain call. N.H. Fifty three years old, from Corpus Crispy, Texas, born in a hospital called Sporn, believe it or not (laughs)! It’s not there anymore. Two children, in a relationship with a Balinese man by the name of Ketut Budiarta, he’s also my producer. Cheerleader in my small town high school, Carville, Texas and dreamed of everything else in the world, especially palm trees. I went into theater, Summer Stock Theater near where I lived; no one in my family was remotely theatrical or entertaining in any way whatsoever. So there was always the question of my legitimacy in the family! (laughs) So, I started doing theater, which took me to Los Angeles for a period of my life, then that took me to Australia.

088 | beatmag.com

S.B. At what age did you start traveling? N.H. Twenty six, before university in Utah, the beginning of spiritual stuff - long story. Ended up in Los Angeles, didn’t think I could handle the cold, so even though I was a theater person, I just couldn’t imagine being in New York. S.B. When you say theater person, at what point did you seriously become that? N.H. From the age of thirteen, I did four shows in the space of three months - semi professional. I’m what they call a triple threat, because I sing, I dance and I act as a performer. I have to be honest, I love straight theater, but musicals can be so magical. I’ve done every musical you can imagine; the lead role in Cabaret, My Fair Lady,

feature the last performance of Kismet, and West Side Story tended to follow me around a bit. I really enjoy doing the work, not the celebrity thing. S.B. Ah ha, the true artist. And so production? N.H.The acting thing was a little non-cerebral for me, especially when you do long run productions. I hung out with the technicians anyway, so I started to move into production, stage management, production co-coordinator for theater or touring groups. I love lighting design, loads of fun. I then branched out and did world expos, then went back to Los Angeles and worked with theme parks. In Japan there was more of the same, and that’s when I met the first person who mentioned Bali. S.B. So here we are with the Bali Today T.V. show. How did that come about? N.H. Two years ago a friend of mine asked me to put together a newspaper in English that was more informative about the community. You’ve chosen to live here, so its your community and you want to participate in your community, you want to know what’s going on; so how do you go about doing that? So I thought about the next evolution, beyond a newspaper. We have two of them, magazines, which are great, then television. There’s a program in America called Good Morning America, it’s their wake up. It’s news and it affects them. I wanted that here and it didn’t exist. You know, for the community of people outside our national boundaries, but people who live here in Bali right now too. S.B. When you say people, are you directing this program directly at expatriates? N.H. In the sense that it’s delivered in English, yes, but our show will always have Indonesian subtitles or if the person is speaking Indonesian there will be English subtitles. The point is, we’re trying to bridge the perceived differences between the expatriate from Italy, France et cetera: we’re all here, on Bali, today. S.B. O.K., two years ago, and now? N.H. I didn’t want to talk about it and not have it happen, there’s enough of that going around. So when I was in Australia, I came back in January and started putting people and things together. This was not about me, it was and is a huge team effort. The first thing we did was make a little pilot to see what we could do, and then talked to Balinese networks. Then we were directed to other

networks. There are a lot of shows addressing Indonesia and they’re great, but I want us to be about THIS community living here now. So we now have a relationship with TVRI Bali, which should be great. S.B. Will this program be broadcast throughout Indonesia? N.H. Not right now, but being in the 21st century, we have a website where you can watch the show from anywhere in the world, anytime you want, through the website (balitodayshow.com), that includes shows from a month ago. S.B. Mind blowing, what a shot in the arm for Bali and the people who are thinking of living here. Are you going to show both sides of the coin? N.H. Absolutely. S.B. TVRI is government subsidized; to what limit are your restrictions? N.H. The only words that were put on the line were that we were not allowed to accept sponsorship from alcohol or tobacco companies. (Laughs). S.B. So basically everything is baby steps. Will you have entertainment as well? N.H. Oh yes - fashion, expatriate kids that are achievers, focusing on movers - people who are doing and making things happen. I also want to know who Imam Bonjol was. I want to know it all, about where I’m living, don’t you? That’s the aim: guests will talk about their life in Bali, and hopefully educate each other. S.B. It will be interesting to see how the Balinese react to this. N.H. We’ve had so many Balinese thanking us for wanting to do this; a lot of travel-educated Balinese are ready to come on board. One who was working for the Voice of America - exciting! S.B. Curtain call is coming down, what do you have to say to your fans out there? N.H. Please grow with us, we really want input from everybody living here, as to what they think the show should be, people they’d love to meet on the show, subjects to discuss. Bali Today Show. Come, every Thursday at 7pm. TVRI... Thanks Nanci, and as they say in the show business world, break a leg! Chow mein, Salvador Bali

Flapjaks Jl. Pantai Kuta Seaview, Kuta, Bali tel 0361 765674 For this week’s review, The Beat’s own self-appointed gelato connoiseur Dan Ashcroft dropped into the new Flapjaks on Kuta beach to once again satisfy his sweet tooth...

Sweet-toothers of Bali rejoice! Strengthening their presence and reputation as purveyors of sugar and spice and all things nice, Flapjaks House of Pancakes and Home-made Gelato have thrown open the doors to a new dining space right on Kuta’s famous beach. It seems there has been a gelato revolution over recent months, with a host of gelato parlours popping up all over the place, and a huge increase in tourists and locals alike ambling along, waffle-cone in hand slurping up the delicious icy beverage. Already boasting outlets in nearby Tuban and Sanur, the Kuta location is another step to island-wide gelato domination for the Rama Restaurant group. However, gelato is just one of the strings to Flapjaks’ sugary bow. Drop in between 9am-12am everyday and you’ll find a fully loaded menu including coffees, juices, smoothies, pancakes, waffles, and crepes – not to mention the rolling assortment of 56 gelato flavours. But it’s not all sweetness and light – there’s a delicious selection of savouries for the non sugar junkies. Change up the chocolate on your pancake or waffle for creamy mushroom sauce, triple cheese or sausage and cream (amongst others) if you’re after a more wholesome snack. You can also order all-day breakfasts, salads, pasta dishes and sandwiches to

Last up on the agenda comes Flapjaks’ party piece; the mixed fruits gelato set (short – 49k++, bigman 95k++). Prepare to clear the table for this one as it’s served in what can only be described as a wineglass for I arrive having been sat in the traffic jam from hell for giants. Five scoops of gelato (diner’s choice) sit atop a the last 30 minutes, and so am in need of some serious mound of chopped fresh fruits and crispy flakes with refreshment. A Bali strawberry whirl smoothie (short enough chocolate tubes sticking out of it to make it – 35k++, bigman – 42k++) is quickly whipped up and look like a sea-mine. The whole thing is finished off I greedily suck it down despite the risk of brain- with a mountain of whipped cream and sauce – an freeze. It barely touches the sides, but the delicious ice-cream dream. I won’t pretend I managed to finish mix of fresh strawberries and raspberries with honey, this off too, you’ll need a minimum of four friends milk, gelato and apple juice hits all the right spots, and to do that – between the photographer and myself I immediately order another. Thirst duly quenched, we barely made a dent. I pack up my dessert spoon, I’m ready for business and get stuck into a caramel utterly defeated, and vow to return with a few willing Baileys waffle (half – 42K++, full round – 60k++); a volunteers next time in order to tackle this delicious plate-flattening symphony of large Belgian-style waffle monster. with rum & Kahlua flavoured mascarpone cheese, caramel Bailey’s sauce, shaved rich chocolate flakes Flapjaks is open every day on Jl. UVE, KuDeTa’s upstairs and premium up-market bar and dining zone came to life with the sounds of 98.5fm The Beat Radio last Friday night. DJ Mamsa displayed to the predominantly local, 98.5 listening crowd why he’s won the award for The Beat Male DJ of the Year for the last two years in a row with a tech house set punctuated with some great improvised horn from trumpet master Rio Sidik. The four hour set from Mamsa, chief music programmer and one of the founders of 98.5 The Beat Radio Plus, was only matched by the location itself. With the stars above and overlooking the grounds and beach at KuDeTa, it was a night to remember and one that is likely to be repeated again soon, sometime, somewhere. Tune into 98.5fm for details. Burgerkill threw down some RHCP, before ending with Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun with Robby from Navicula jumping in. Two local monsters certainly did rock Halloween this year!

The Living End

T

he Living End are basically a living, breathing rock legend - a fact which was proved at Kuta’s Boshe on Saturday night, showing that it is possible to bring good Aussie bands to Bali and make a success of it. Local lads Superman is Dead and Bandung’s The SIGIT started proceedings and by the time The Living End got on stage at about 10.15pm the place erupted. They played all their classics including, Who’s Gonna Save Us, What’s On Your Radio? White Noise and stacks more including some new ones off their forthcoming album. They are a tight and talented band giving the mainly Balinese crowd and a smattering of Aussie rockers of approx 1200 people one hell of a performance. The band was so pleased with the show that they played for almost 2 hours - double what they were scheduled.

096 | beatmag.com

So how did it come about? According to Bagus, manager of Boshe, the show was sponsored by a creatively minded cigarette brand (X Mild) with Boshe picking up the tab on local expenses. Apparently the brand sent out a tweet searching for a big indoor venue for their brand activation in Bali and 90% + of the RT came back for Boshe. The rest is history. It’s hard to say if the 100k entrance price would have really paid for all the expenses plus make some profit, but it did prove that local folk are willing to shed a substantial sum of cash to see an international band. Who knows? Maybe now the world is the limit. Rock on Boshe, rock on... It’s a great indoor venue.
