T

he last month of 2010 is finally upon us. But before we say goodbye to the year of the tiger we still have to finish off the final month of December. Like we mentioned last edition, the number of major events have slowed downed this month, but the number of small events still scatter the Jakarta night life scene, so you’ll be very unlucky to ever feel bored in this megapolitan city. The big durian still seems to be plagued by traffic jams, with no solution to end this matter. It seems to be worse than ever nowadays. The solution to the matter seems to only be leaving two hours earlier than what you used to do. Whatever the case, rest assured TBJ will always keep you up-to-date on the goings on of Jakarta’s entertainment scene. Party On Jakarta, and remember to keep your wallets full for the legions of event headed on New Years.

All

Things

Bright and Beautiful in December By Erza S.T.

040 | beatmag.com

Gosh! It is December again already and this is the season to be jolly. I can already feel the Christmas spirit slowly starting to appear in the shopping malls and at private residences. It is the time to prepare a great celebration of faith for all Christians. Well, that and beautiful Christmas decorations and caroling. Let us fire up the spirit through great music... Let’s kick off the first half of December with the works of John Rutter.

O

n the upcoming 5th of December 2010, the renowned Jakarta Chamber Orchestra with the award-winning choir Batavia Madrigal Singers under Avip Priatna as conductor will perform various works from John Rutter for both orchestra and choir. As a classical music lover, I find this upcoming program very exciting, especially since they are going to perform ‘Gloria’ cantata that was first premiered by Rutter himself in 1974 at the Witherspoon Hall of the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha Nebraska. The composition, commissioned by Olson’s Voices of Mel Olson chorale, has become a much-performed favourite over the years. Rarely performed in Jakarta, I believe this glorious cantata will tantalize your music buds. Those of you who are not aware of John Rutter’s music might find that his music is rather eclectic with influences of the French and English choral traditions of the early 20th century. His compositions are chiefly choral and include Christmas carols, anthems and extended works such as Gloria, Magnificat and Requiem. One of Rutter’s beloved works is ‘Feel The Spirit’ – a cycle of seven spirituals arranged for chorus, mezzosoprano soloist and orchestra. Rutter came up with the idea after hearing Melanie Marshal’s solo interpretations of spirituals in her recitals. He thought that her artistry in this area of song would be just as effective in the fuller context of choir and orchestra. Together they chose seven of their favourite spirituals and ended up with ‘Joshua Fit The Battle’, ‘Steal Away’, ‘I Got A Robe’, ‘Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child’, ‘Every Time I Feel The Spirit’, ‘Deep River’ and a rousing rendition of ‘When The Saints Go Marching In’. Aside from ‘Gloria’ and ‘Feel The Spirit’, Avip Priatna together with his chamber orchestra and Batavia Madrigal Singers will also perform other interesting composition by Rutter such as ‘Suite for Strings’, ‘5 Sacred Music’ and ‘3 Meditation for The Orchestra’. Avip who chose Aula Simfonia for its superb acoustics as the concert venue, invited two

guest baritone soloists: Teddy Panelewen and Hari Santosa to make this concert more exciting. Though John Rutter seems to enjoy composing and conducting religious music, he told the US television program 60 Minutes in 2003 that he was not particularly a religious man, yet still deeply spiritual and inspired by the spirituality of sacred verses and prayers. Unfortunately due to his illness from chronic fatigue syndrome, which restricted his output, this living composer stopped writing music to commission, as he was unable to guarantee meeting deadlines. This is why you have to make sure not to miss this concert, especially since it is quite rare to have a concert with all John Rutter’s work in Jakarta. His music is great therapy for your soul and will surely bring you bright and beautiful feelings.

Sedikit berbeda ketika ia tampil nge-DJ, kedua lagu tadi cenderung ngepop, romantis sekaligus easy listening.

K

___________________ Here comes Indonesia’s scariest band: Kelelawar Malam. Featuring Sayiba Von Terkutuk (vocals, guitar), Deta Beringas (bass, vocals), Fahri Al-Maut (guitar, backing vocals), and Apin Kiamat (drums), their debut album titled ‘October’ was released (appropriately enough) in October. The album consists of 12 songs with the central theme of horror stories and urban legends, and dabbles around punk rock, heavy metal, stoner rock, ballads, and delta blues. The band was founded in 2008 due to Sayiba and Deta’s dual obsession with the American horrorpunk band the Misfits, and their love of Indonesian horror b-movies. Sayiba then wrote the lyrics and Deta did the artwork. Stay connected with the living dead here: www.myspace.com/kelelawarmalam.com

New Release

Aha – 25 Trio asal Norwegia yang pernah melejit berkat lagu berjudul ‘Take On Me’, lama vakum dan nyaris tidak terdengar kesibukan masing masing anggotanya. Dalam album ini, terdapat hits “Take On Me”, “The Sun Always Shine On TV”, “Living Daylights”, “Hunting High And Low” plus lagu baru yang berjudul “Butterfly Butterfly (Last Hurrah)”.

Elaine Paige & Friends

Ada lagu jawara mereka semacam “West End Girls”, “Suburbia”, “It’s A Sin”, “Go West”, “New York City Boys”, dan ditambah dengan satu lagu baru yang berjudul “Together”.

Lalu ada lagu “Just The Way You Are” yang pernah dinyanyikan oleh Billy Joel dan lagu hits lainnya.

Worm Fodder

EGRV Kings Of Leon Power On / Power Off Come Around Sundown After three years spent gradually fading away, electric duo EGRV have pulled their chairs up to the table of fame again, this time with a rich techelectro jaunt for both the glam crowd and indie ears. Adie Habibie and Lawrence Widarto have cooked it well with danceable electric, groovetronic urban tunes, midi riot, and some deep disco concern in the kitchen. Tracks like Stars On 45, You’re So Amazing, Drama Queen, and I Know That You’re Lookin’ Over Here are something big for any night out, but are equally perfect to fill in your living room with some music with plenty of smart energy.

The Followill brothers ride a different horse into town with every different album. These arena rock soldiers present a gracefully slower run this time on the tunes and distortion, perhaps because of the heavier lyric content and subject matter, or maybe the boys just want to loosen up for more beers and supermodels. Definitely not as chartfriendly as previous album Only by the Night, but the formula is a soul-bearer for anyone’s hard day’s night, or an amusement for southern rock fans. First single on the album ‘Radioactive’ is superbly atmospheric and most likely to become the hit track of the album, especially the choir remix. A worthy addition to the Kings canon, but something tells me it’s not quite the follow up the record execs were hoping for... What do they know though, anyway?

Due Date AComedy. Director: Todd Phillips. Writers: Alan R. Cohen, Alan Freedland. Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan, Jamie Foxx. Sutradara Michael Apted (Amazing Grace, The World is Not Enough) mengambil alih kendali dari Andrew Adamson yang menyutradarai dua film Narnia yang pertama. Hello, Sunday Schoolers ... it’s time to go back to Narnia. No, this time Peter and Susan Pevensie are not joining us - just Edmund and Lucy on their dreary holiday with a mean spirited cousin named Eustace. It’s not that bad since they accidentally find a portal to bring them back to Narnia, where they will join King Caspian’s quest to find the seven lost Lords of Narnia. And, you know what ... the adventure is in 3D! Happy holiday!

Monsters Drama, Thriller, Fantasy. Writer/Director: Gareth Edwards. Cast: Scoot McNairy, Whitney Able. Monsters bukanlah film makhluk luar angkasa biasa. Six years ago, gigantic aliens crashed in Mexico. Since then, the US has built a great wall to protect the border. A cynical journalist is sent by a rich American to pick up his daughter in Mexico. The journey of these two different people is made rich with twists, subtle tension, eerie atmosphere, and creepy ambience. Monsters was made with a budget as low as US$ 15,000, but has gained positive reviews from movie critics all around the world. It is not your average alien movie, but rather a drama with many things to ponder, and a careful study of human behavior. An excellent movie that is surely not to be missed!

KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS

I’ve always had fond memories of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. I remember when I was a university student in the US, I often found myself stopping by their counter on campus for one or two doughnuts while running to class in the morning. I remember being hit by the wonderful aroma of freshly-made doughnuts when I walked in the door; and with the accompaniment of hot coffee, it was an invigorating start to many of my days. I think I was actually jumping for joy when I heard that Krispy Kreme opened their first store in Indonesia!

K

rispy Kreme Doughnuts started in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA in 1937. Premium quality doughnuts (or donuts) are their thing, and the Original Glazed is their masterpiece. I know many people that swear that it is the best in the world. Although simple, they’re far from plain. When warm, there’s nothing like them. They are really the original melt-in-your-mouth doughnuts. So far Krispy Kreme has more than 450 outlets all over the world including the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Mexico, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and also Indonesia. They made their way to Indonesia on August 30th, 2006, opening their first store in Pondok Indah Mall 2. Other than the Original Glazed, Krispy Kreme has many other doughnuts to choose from. The Glazed Cruller is on some people’s number one list. It is also one of my personal

favourites, as with the Veneto Tiramisu, a rich and tasty treat combo of fluffy doughnut and Tiramisu cake. Other highlights include Lovely Dovey, Chocolate Iced Sprinkles, Cinnamon Fritter, Manhattan Oreo, etc. They really know how to please the crowd! The Original Glazed doughnuts are selling for 6k each, or 53k for a dozen. The other varieties of doughnuts are 7.8k each and 69.5k for a dozen. Their Mini Doughnuts are also winning the hearts of the customers, especially with the young ones. In December 2009, their Mini Doughnuts were launched in conjunction with the movie “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. Adding to their lines of Minis, Krispy Kreme recently came up with a line of Mini Cheese Doughnuts. The ones you should try are the new Cheese Out Loud (cream cheese, shredded cheese, with a touch of caramel), Blueberry Cheese (cheese, with a dash of blueberry), Mocha Cheese (cappuccino flavour, cheese), and Snowwhite (cream cheese, shredded cheese). And for those who prefer a touch of savoury on their doughnuts, go for the BBQ Oregano Cheese (cream cheese, BBQ flavor, oregano). Good things do come in small packages - a dozen of the Minis are priced at 46.8k, and 65k for 20. So, go treat yourself with an Original Glazed Doughnut (or any other tasty treats) from Krispy Kreme and make your day special. For the ultimate experience, I recommend getting the freshly made ones - like eating a soft, warm piece of love. Really.

ENPAO

Oenpao is a chain of restaurants specializing in Asian food. Founded by Mr. Dian Mustika and his wife Lia, Oenpao started in 2005 at Bumi Serpong Damai, Tangerang. The name Oenpao is taken from Mrs. Mustika’s maiden name (Oen) combined with the Chinese word for bread (pao).

O

enpao is now a much-loved home grown Asian restaurant which produces quality dishes throughout its outlets. For me, going there is always fun. It feels like a mini-trip to several countries. There is something for everyone; Chinese food, Japanese, Singaporean, Malaysian, and of course Indonesian, among with plenty of other tasty grub. We recently visited their 20th outlet in the suburb of Bintaro. The place is roomy and pleasant, and right away you can see the red brick wall and wooden furniture, ever present in every Oenpao restaurant. If you’re feeling alfresco, you will enjoy their patio area which is also spacious and comfy.

Oenpao Bintaro Jl. MH Thamrin no. 8, Sektor 7, Bintaro Jaya, Tangerang Selatan Ph: (021) 73882858 Opens: 6am-12am

Opened on September 5th, 2010, we can tell this branch of Oenpao has become a popular eatery in Bintaro area. It was a weeknight, but there were quite a number of customers there. And having a free wi-fi certainly helps. We saw quite a number of people with laptops browsing the net while enjoying their meals. Now to the food.We started with their dim sum dishes. We sampled the popular chicken siomay, shrimp siomay, hakau, and also the chicken feet dim sum. At around 15k per dish, they are a good way to start out your meal. Another one worth mentioning is the very affordable yet tasty chicken porridge (Bubur Ayam) - great bang for your buck for just Rp 10,000! Since they are open daily from 6 am, these are the dishes of choice for the early birds on weekdays and mostly on weekends. Next up, we ordered the Hainan rice with roast duck (36k). It is one of their best sellers here, and it’s easy to see why. The rice is fragrant and the imported Peking duck is cooked to perfection. We also went for the delicious seafood curry noodle (31k). The spice is manageable, and the generous topping of seafood is a good crowd-pleaser. As for beverages, we suggest trying their lassis (20k).You can choose among apple, guava, or mango lassi. They are all refreshingly tasty. The ever-popular teh tarik (16k) is also one of the highlights at Oenpao. There are simply too many items to mention here, but we can honestly say that the Oenpao brand succeeds with bringing consistently good food and efficient service, at prices that are fair and reasonable. You can go to any of their outlets, but we think the Bintaro one is well worth the trip. beatmag.com | 061

Kraton Auguste Soesastro, Simplicity at Its Best 068 | beatmag.com

style Kraton is a fashion house based in New York City, founded by Auguste Soesastro. Auguste was born in Indonesia but spent a big part of his childhood traveling around the globe. He worked as a curator in Australia for Indonesian arts, specializing in antiques and regional textiles and costumes. He held a degree in Film and Digital Arts from the Australian National University and later studied Fashion at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris, France. He interned at some major haute couture houses during his studies in Paris, and later moved to New York to work for Ralph Rucci, an American couturier. Then he freelanced as a pattern maker at some American high-end leading designers before finally launching his own line in 2008. On this year’s Jakarta Fashion Week, we got the chance to see firsthand the creations of Auguste Soesastro. It was held on the last day of JFW 10/11. By that time, I had seen all kinds of designs, cuts, silhouettes in all kinds of fabrics and colors, added with a wide variety of detailing and embellishments. So when the first face of Kraton models came out, which was Paquita Widjaya, I was surprised to see how simple the outfits were. Then more models came and every one of them was wearing the same basic items of blazers, pants, pleated skirts and some modern kebaya worn with kain wrapped around the models’ wait. It wasn’t until I got to see the models up close that I realized how beautifully done every single piece of the collection was. It was clear that Auguste paid great attention to detail on the structure of his outfits, which he said he sewed all by himself. The items were in muted colors such as pink, beige and grey, but the models were wrapped in gorgeous traditional kain such as Songket Nagara from Bali and Songket Pandai Sikek from Sumatera Barat. Those embroidered shawls were enough to give life to the classic outfits. I also love how the models were styled in the simplest way, with their hair tied up in neat buns, wearing big glasses and some of them were even holding a book! It was truly Librarian geeky chic which made me want to run to the nearest shop to get a pair of plastic framed glasses myself. Without making unnecessary statements, the wearers of Kraton’s collection will certainly be the most stylish in the room. These are items you want to keep in your closet because you can wear them any time during any season as they are timeless and classic.

W

hat could be more interesting than shopping in a boutique that knows exactly what you love and hate? All customers want to be understood, right ladies? And that’s the concept Boutiques.com brings. Boutiques. com, brought to you by Google, learns your style and preferences so it can provide you with better results and recommendations. Please keep in mind that Boutiques.com is not a store, and it does not sell products. The products you see on Boutiques. com are sold by online retailers who submit their products to be listed on the site. Boutiques.com lets you discover fashion items through collections curated by celebrities, stylists, designers and fashion bloggers. look, while designers get the chance to showcase their collection and inspiration online. To create your very own boutique, you need to click on the ‘your boutique’ button on the homepage. That’s where Boutiques.com will obtain your preferences. More importantly, Boutiques.com is built on technology developed by a team of fashion experts who work with engineers to set the computer systems to understand various patterns, pairings, and genre definitions. By doing so, hopefully Boutiques.com will offer a much richer interactive shopping experience and help drive traffic to retailers’ websites. anna Artspace has been an active art influence in Ubud, Bali since November 2008, having held various exhibitions featuring the works of senior artists as well as young aspiring artists new to the world of art. From their success in Bali, Hanna Artspace has spread their wings to Jakarta by opening their first gallery in the South Jakarta area with an exhibition titled ‘Unity in Diversity’. Apart from being the nation’s motto, the title of the exhibition itself is very fitting for Hanna Artspace’s spirit of becoming a cauldron for various Indonesian artists to show off their best works to all. The diverse forms of art featured

here showcase the many pieces from artists of different generations, with differing backgrounds and styles as well as contradicting perspectives regarding art. Many of the works of art featured in the exhibition were featured at Hanna Artspace, Bali through an exhibition of the same name and was much praised by art lovers on the island. Reflecting upon the complexities of the contemporary world has become the red rope connecting the many works of art in this exhibition. With the vast contrasting understandings of visual arts, this exhibition echoes the contemporary human psyche that lives in an ever expanding world where reason and circumstances are all forever intertwined, leaving no space for

release. The works within this exhibition imply the magnetism between the strength of global invasion against the resistance of local potential. Since its proclamation almost two years ago, Hanna Art space continues to perfect itself as a professional and trusted agent that bridges the gap between the creative artists, appreciators and marketers as well as the public. Support, faith and acceptance of Bali’s art community as well as the public have become a valuable asset for Hanna Artspace to expand their ventures to the nation’s capital.

NOKIA C7 The Nokia C7 still gets really close to the N8 in some ways. It’s got the same blazing fast penta-band 3G, a 3.5” nHD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, a 680MHz CPU and 256MB RAM, which are some good figures for the efficient Symbian OS. Getting rid of that bulging camera module has brought down the thickness. But still imaging on the Nokia C7 is down to “just” 8MP and fixed zoom. However, 720p video recording is still on – as is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0. The internal memory has been cut in half but 8GB is still plenty, considering there’s a microSD slot if you need to expand. rio sidik W

e met with Rio Sidik a few days after his return to Bali at JP’s Warung for a little chat and from the moment we met, he seemed to be emitting a different aura about him. An air of a much calmer and mature person resonated from him. This was my first time meeting him in person, besides seeing him on stage and he seemed much slimmer than before his trip, but other than that he still looked the same Rio Sidik. He had many stories to tell about his musical travels and also a lot more about his life, giving me more insight on a guy I’d only known from the stage. Most of his time when in Europe was spent in London where he was lucky enough to be invited to perform at the house of Robin Gibbs of Bee Gees for a special event. At the event Rio and his trumpet shared the stage with the likes of Tim Lapthorne, Kevin Armstrong, Natasha Bedingfield, Tim Dwals, Josh Stone and many others. He even shared a table with Simon Cowell’s mother. Not only performing with big name musicians, Rio also got the chance to toot his horn with #3 world ranked DJ Peter Poyton at The Penthouse London. Eventually his roaming lead him to Portugal where he played with DJ Chus and then to Holland to share the stage with Hans Dulfer. After being awe struck by the luck he struck on his travels of Europe, the one question I had

returns ...

to ask was “What the greatest thing he gained from his trip?” The question took some time for him to answer but he said that after his close to nine year marriage was finally coming to an end, he found refuge in music, and that this trip was what made him cope with the stresses of that situation. He finished by saying that to him music has always saved him from his troubles. He definitely seemed much wiser, but the recent personal trials haven’t seemed to affect him so much as he always ended most of his comments with a huge laughing smile. Another question I really wanted to know was, “When will Saharadja return with a new album?” He promised that early next year the new album will be available for all the fans, but now with a new line-up. Before we ended our chat, Rio played a newly unreleased track for us, and it was clear that the song was a departure from his old funky self, and sounded much more mature than I’ve heard before. Rio Sidik will perform at JP’s Warung every Friday night with his Jazz quartet, but don’t be surprised if he slips a few of his original improvisations in sometime during his show, he’s always known to add a little twist to every performance. Be sure to enjoy Rio and the gang at JPs soon! (Rinaldi)

After arriving back from his three month summer musical walkabout around Europe, we caught up with trumpeter/ Saharaja front man Rio Sidik to see what he got up to and chat about his life in music. beatmag.com | 083

Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival Run Down on

the

in Bali

I

n a nail biting climax to both an epic Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival event and an incredible 2010 Coca-Cola ISC tour season, Marlon Gerber’s first ISC tour win resulted in 18 year old Putra Hermawan’s 2010 Coca Cola ISC Open Division Championship victory. The Sunday drama was the culmination of two days of incredible surfing action and entertainment at Kuta Beach for the annual Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival. Virtually every possible championship race scenario was exhausted during the jam-packed day of competitive surfing at Halfways Kuta Beach on Sunday, first with number two ranked Pepen Hendrik narrowly going down in the quarterfinals to number three ranked Dedi Santosa, and number one ranked Hermawan getting eliminated in the semifinals by Wayan Suprayinta and Lee Wilson. It all came down to Dedi Santoso in the final. If he won the Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival he would be champion. If not, Hermawan would win the championship. In the Rip Curl GromSearch National Finals, it was 14-year-old Jeren Kiring who will be taking the trip to Australia next year to compete in the

World GromSearch Finals at Bells Beach. He put on consistently high level performances on both his forehand and his backhand to finish with a total score of 12.45 points out of 20, just ahead of Koko Mitsua. In the Women’s Division final, Dyah Rahayu Dewi raced to her second consecutive ISC Women’s Division Tour victory, posting scores of 5.0 and 6.5 to eclipse her competition with a total heat score of 11.5 to her nearest rival Stella, who finished with a total score of 3.90. The awards presentation was delayed slightly by a sudden and heavy rain shower, but after about 30 minutes the awards were presented followed by some night time entertainment. Local bands Devil Dice and Dialog Dini Hari and Tol Band Tol warmed things up to start, and then with the beach filling up to maximum capacity, Efek Ruma Kaca kept things simmering until Seringai blew the crowd away with their hard core guitar blasting brand of rock and roll. A BBQ feast by Goko, barrels of Bintang beer, and some of the best rock bands in Indonesia made for an epic finish to an extraordinary weekend on Kuta Beach.

feature DOMESTIC FAME :

Janz Suandika Janz Suandika, started out radio music directing and band managing (for Tol Band Tol) as well as being a band agent for D’ext Management, holding frequent stage appearances in Bali most of which were featured in The Beat’s ‘On The Rise’ articles. Now he talks to The Beat about his vision of music. You hold many roles in the industry, as music director, on air operator, scriptwriter and event and promotion for radio, and now you’re a band manager and band agent. Tell us what’s the red line between all this roles? Both the radio and music industries have one thing in common: MUSIC. Frankly it has been my prime need in life. So I’d say music and the love of it defines the red line. Did your first job have anything to do with music? Back then I started a band but didn’t last too long and from there I just kept myself going as a music director in a radio station. First thing you do when one of your band members disappears 3 minutes before hitting the stage? 1. Call a friend 2. 50:50 3. Ask the audience, hahaha… Craziest thing that you’ve seen within the music industry? When fans appreciate free stickers over the band itself. Wildest fans? After a gig in Singaraja, we made our way back home to Denpasar, and suddenly when we arrived, someone was knocking on the car door, suspiciously a robber or something. But eventually we knew that it was just fans that had stalked us all the way 2-3 hours drive from Singaraja to Denpasar just to ask for free band stickers.

The most thing annoying for an event organizer? Rubber watch (‘jam karet’, just like one of our songs haha). When the gig is later than what’s on the schedule. If there was an ideal condition, a fair situation for Indonesian musicians, what would it be like? A good label contract, TV Airplay, nationwide promo tour, plus a happy family with 2 children for every band member would be fair. Possibility for Bali musicians to make it in the national industry: impossible or just good luck? I don’t think it’s impossible for talented Bali musicians to make it on the national stage, some already have, but luck can always make a difference. I always wonder if only Bali was the capital of Indonesia. Automatically Bali bands would grow as much as the big ones we see now. Shout out to The Beat? Always support Bali musicians, Indonesian musicians, and add more music pages for band profiles and their works at the beat. www.facebook.com/dextartis www.myspace.com/tolbandtol www.facebook.com/tolbandtol www.formspring.com/janztbt

food review

This week’s food review comes from Bianco Restaurant in Jalan Padma. The Beat sent Italian foodie Dan Ashcroft along to check it out and to see what they mean by ‘Asian-Euro fusion’.

N

estled quietly down Padma street, just a stone’s throw from the beach sits Bianco Restaurant - it’s airy white interior an oasis of tasteful furnishings and uncluttered colonial-style décor. On a street that is not really known for dining at the more tasteful end of the scale, here is at least one establishment that has raised the standard in the area for delicious, good value eats and drinks with a unique menu that fuses traditional Indonesian cuisine with good old Italian cooking – courtesy of consultant chef and native Italian Roberto Bogni of Rosso Vivo fame. By January next year, Bianco will have been on the block for three years, having fed and watered many a happy diner, whilst garnering quite a reputation for lunch and dinner time delight. Clear a space on your table to make room for the huge gatefold food and drink menus, and give yourself a minute or two to fully take everything in… The drinks menu features everything you’d expect and more such as coffees, teas, juices, smoothies, milkshakes and soft drinks, not to mention a range of classic and special cocktails

including the famous lychee martini (48.5k+), chocolate martini (54k+), bloody mary, Singapore sling and Long Island iced tea (all 52k+). Friendly, polite and efficient staff are buzzing around all the time with permanent smiles to make everyone feel welcome. The food menu boasts a host of Indonesian and Italian favourite dishes, with the idea being a subtle fusion of each cuisine. On the starter list you’ll find delicious soups like asparagus cream (26.5k+) and tom yum (35k+) alongside plenty of other snacks and salads. Indonesia is well represented with classic dishes like gado gado (27.5k+), rendang (51k+) and nasi uduk (68.5k+) as well as the mouth-watering Bianco grand rijstaffel feast to share (315k+). For the Italian side of things you’ll find a huge range of traditional style thincrust pizzas, and a generous list of pastas including spaghetti bolognese (58k+) and lasagne (61k+). There are also a smattering of international favourites like fish and chips (62k+) and chicken parmigiana (72.5k).

dressing it’s light, fresh and difficult not to wolf down in one go. The main course is the perfect example of what Bianco is trying to achieve with the Italian-Indonesian fusion idea; ravioli fish curry (65.5k+). Soft pockets of Italian ravioli pasta are filled with fresh seafood in an Asian-style curry sauce with just a mild tang of spicyness. It’s a fantastic mix and really goes to show that these two cuisines can comfortably co-exist on the same plate. Last up is what I’ve been looking forward to the most: dessert. In this case, the best-selling crème brulee (34k+). The burnished crispy sugar top duly cracked (is there anything Having recently been on Indonesian food mode better than doing this?!) and I get to work on the for over a week, I decide to check out the sticky, gooey sugary goodness beneath. Easy to see more European side of the menu, and taking up why this one sells so well – the perfect sweet to position on one of the comfy day-bed style sofas top off a good Italian meal. I go for that most ubiquitous of Italian starters; garlic bread (24k+). Served as half baguettes and So the next time you’re heading though Padma, with a good coverage of garlicy, herby butter either en-route to the beach or on the way back I’m reminded why this crispy snack has been from a sunset session, don’t forget to drop into my starter of choice whenever dining on Italian.
