theSCOOP Impiety
1
Black metal band from Singapore, Impiety who are currently carrying out their ‘Asia Worshippers Tour’ will be landing Jakarta on the 22nd of January. The original band members have long changed since their formation back in 1990, now only with original member Shyaithan (Vocal/Guitar/Bass) and drummer Necro-Angelfornicator, the band will be accompanied by three new Italian members to complete the band. The venue and ticket prices have not yet been confirmed yet, but the current word on the street is it may be held at Bulungan. We’ll be sure to give black metal fans the latest info about this upcoming concert when it comes to hand.
Laskar Pelangi After gaining unprecedented success as a novel and at the box office, the heart touching true story of a band of underprivileged school kids is making its way to the theatrical stage in the form of a musical. Produced by Mira Lesmana and Toto Arto, the show will feature veteran actors and singers such as Dira Sugandi, Lea Simanjuntak and Eka Deli. The young cast playing the main characters of the story will not be those from the big screen version, but a specially handpicked cast of young actors. The task of director has been forwarded to the talented Riri Riza, while the music will be composed by Erwin Gutawa and artistic designs will be handled by Jay Subyakto. The musical will be performed at Teater Jakarta, Taman Ismail Marzuki until the 9th of January 2011. Every Tuesday to Friday shows are available at 7pm while Saturday and Sundays have two shows, at 2pm and 7pm. For more information call tel: (021) 7246225

Thanks to promoter Urbanite the band is set to take Jakarta by storm.
theSCOOP Ne-Yo After word of Sentra Live! bringing Chris Brown and Ne-Yo to Jakarta sometime this month and rumors of how the artists involved declined the offer to perform even though several tickets were already sold, many thought the deal was bust. Sentra Live! has finally shined some light on the matter reporting that the concert is still on but will only feature Ne-Yo and that the date has been pushed back to the 22nd of January. Ne-Yo’s concert will be in part to promote his latest album ‘Libra Scale’ and will be held at Istora Senayan. He will be sharing the stage with local talents Maliq & D’Essentials and Ello. Santana Guitar Heaven
Arcade Fire The Suburbs
The guitar legend of many decades compiled a list of classic rock tracks for this album, reviving popular songs from the 1960s to 1990s with the help from some friends. Working with India Arie, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, Scott Stapp of Creed, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Chris Daughtry, Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Rob Thomas, Joe Cocker and rapper Nas, Santana has brought together some great talent for some of the best tracks over rock history. It’s an interesting concept and well executed. If you’re a fan these songs might win your heart, but if you want to hear Santana’s undiluted skills, we suggest you switch on to another CD of his excellence.
Compared to their previous album Neon bible, The Canadian post punk act Arcade Fire’s new album feels a little more toned down. It’s not the big fast sound like before, but casually relies on simple riffs, lazy bass lines, calm piano, and deep-haunting vocals. ‘City With No Children’ is the album’s most charming song, borrowing the spirits of Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and The Smiths altogether in a 3 minute long dark lullaby. ‘Month of May’ carries a big dose of punk rock, Ramones-esque side to The Suburbs. Vocalist Win Butler seems to direct the album as a tale of suburban children with deeper enunciation, bitter aphorism of life and memory, sung and recorded to charmingly disturb your comfortable mind.

2011 Classical Way
By Erza S.T.
We have finally reached the end of 2010 and voila: here comes 2011 where hopes of a better future are rising high again. Let us get inspired and start this fantastic New Year in classical way at the Jakarta New Year Concert.

I
t has been five years since pianist maestro and composer Ananda Sukarlan first introduced the tradition of a New Year Concert to Indonesia. From the period of 2006 to 2010, his New Year Concerts have successfully entertained and mesmerized many classical music lovers from Jakarta to Bandung, Yogyakarta and even Bali. This tradition of celebrating New Year actually started in Vienna in 1939, where conductor Clemens Krauss performed an extraordinary concert on December 31st that year, playing all music compositions from the Strauss family. This tradition that was held in the Grober Saal of the Musikverein has been an international phenomenon and it is broadcast around the world to an estimated audience of 50 million people in 72 countries.

Ananda Sukarlan Pianississimo II 9th January 2011. Starts from 16.00 National Museum Hall For more information: Chendra Panatan at +62-818891038 or ycep@yahoo.com
Inspired by this, Ananda Sukarlan decided to create one for Indonesia (Jakarta) performing his great composition collections to our local classical music lovers. Last year, he successfully brought in the theme of ‘Pianississimo’ with concerts in Jakarta and Yogyakarta. To continue his success, Ananda presents the same theme for this year ‘Pianississimo 2’. For 2010 we had six pianists performing on three pianos - twelve hands and sixty fingers performing Ananda Sukarlan’s masterpiece ‘Schumann Psychosis’. This year’s concert Ananda has prepared another stunning composition called ‘Vivaldi’s Winter of Discontent’ – a modern outtake from Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’. With this new composition, Ananda is trying to build our awareness of global warming and climate discontent on earth that has been going on through his music. This composition has been specially made for four pianos, and will be performed by the winners of the Ananda Sukarlan Award 2010. Piano is really the main dish of this concert, and Ananda goes even deeper by exploring piano sounds for one hand, two pianists on one piano and two pianos in unison. Young and talented pianists such as Edith Widayani (1st winner of the Ananda Sukarlan Award National Piano Competition 2010), Melivia Citravani Raharjo, Sheila Victoria Pietono and many more will be the stars in this concert. Nevertheless, the young and talented are not the only stars in this concert. Legendary pianists such as Latifah Kodijat and Charlotte Panggabean (renowned for their famous duet performances on piano) will also rock the stage of this concert. Despite being in their 80’s, they both remain ever young in spirit. Another interesting aspect of this upcoming concert is the venue that has now moved to the hall inside the National Museum. For those of you who have followed the Ananda Sukarlan musical journey, this concert is definitely not to be missed. And for those of you who have never seen an Ananda Sukarlan concert, well… this is a great place to start. Let us commence 2011 with a good start and of course, great music!

What music (album/s or song/s) are you into at the moment? I’ve been listening to a lot of Living End’s albums, but lately also Bad Religion and Billy Talent.
Besides touring all over Indonesia with his band ‘Superman Is Dead’, Bobby also spends most of his time in the studio working on their upcoming album, due to be released mid 2011.
What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? Malevolent Creation, a death metal band from Buffalo-New York. I had this good friend back in high school days who was really into the genre, I guess he influenced me a lot with me ending up me buying the album. What are your all-time favourite albums? Why? All albums from the Living End will always be my all time favourites. Smart music with great technical skills always gives me goose bumps, every time I listen to it. What was the worst record you ever purchased? I couldn’t recall the title but for sure it was from Don Dokken. I tried to listen to it, over and over again, but I guess it wasn’t for me. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate Chris Cheney or Brian Setzer, even though I don’t want to reincarnate. What album do you choose to start your weekend? On many weekends, I listen to My Chemical Romance’s newest album ‘Danger Days: The True Life Of The Fabulous Killjoys’, very energetic and comes with various instruments in it. And song/album you choose to end your weekend? Something chilled and relaxing, songs from Shaggy Dog or Mokalamati will work.

nown for his unique voice, Tompi has just released his newest album ‘Tak Pernah Setengah Hati’. The launch party was held at the Hard Rock Cafe on December 12th, with plenty of famous names and guest stars such as Pandji Pragiwaksono, Andien, and Glenn Fredly. For his fourth album, this licensed doctor stays true to his roots; jazz with a touch of exploration and experimentation such as the inclusion of a Dangdut vocal technique and even rapping. Using a title like Tak Pernah Setengah Hati (never half hearted) he’d like to express to the universe that he’s consistent in being original and serious with his mission. Speaking of serious, it took him over a year to prepare this album. Other than that, it’s clear that he’s striving to give the impression that Tompi is more of a band than a solo artist, although he’s still the leader. Deklarasi Cupumanik:
Grunge Harga Mati
These Bandung grunge veterans just released their newest single with a video clip, “Grunge Harga Mati” a few days ago. This song is their first ever single after quitting from a major label. It’s also their significant first step to fully apply a kind of Do-It-Yourself ethos. Che, the frontman, said that starting December 2010 they will release one song every two months and give it away a.k.a. free of charge. Another six songs are ready to be distributed thru next year. The single “Grunge Harga Mati” is like a declaration that Cupumanik is identical to grunge, Cupumanik is grunge itself. They have always been tagged as a grunge band by the public, and it naturally has become their flesh and blood so this time they formally declared it. Regarding the video clip, it basically talks about the transformation that happened with Cupumanik, from major label to an indie band. BATU PANAS STEAK
BP LOUNGE
058 | beatmag.com
Kemang is an area that continues to evolve. If you have a keen eye for detail, once in a while you’ll find something out of the ordinary, and this is the story of how I came across this new place. I’ve often noticed a bright orange ‘Batu Panas Steak’ sign each time I pass through Jalan Kemang, but this time I decided to make a stop. The restaurant is on the small side, and the décor fairly basic and casual, but the main attraction here is the food not the atmosphere. Not many places use hot stones as its platter and sell steaks at an affordable price too. Before Batu Panas Steak was located at the nearby Splash complex, but recently it moved to its current location in late May, 2010.
Batu Panas Steak and BP Lounge Jl. Kemang I no. 12 C, Kemang, Jakarta Selatan Phone: (021) 71793149 Opens: Weekday: 11am – midnight Weekend: 11am – 3am
‘Batu panas’ means ‘hot stone’ in Bahasa and this is what the place specializes in. Ordering the 150g Australian Sirloin (Rp90k), I waited a while for the hot stone to heat up, but when they brought it to my table it was truly a feast for the senses! The steak was put on top of the volcanic hot stone (imported from Germany), and the meat sizzled tantalizingly right in front of me. Because the meat is presented to you raw, you actually decide on how you’d like the steak. I prefer mine to be medium-well. With a dollop of barbeque sauce and herb butter to accompany my steak, the time to engulf the meat began. For me, the herb butter really added a nice touch to the whole taste. The meat is tender and juicy. The selection of steaks is top notch quality. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and loved the whole process and presentation of the meal.
Seafood lovers are not forgotten in this place too; go for the Hot Stone Salmon steak (Rp75K) or King Prawn (Rp130K). You can also have these items grilled, should you prefer it that way. The Spicy Tuna Spaghetti (Rp45K) is also quite a crowd pleaser here, getting many compliments from guests.
Just when I thought there was nothing more this place could offer, I discovered that there was a cozy lounge upstairs called the BP Lounge. My question of why so many nicely dressed people disappeared upstairs was finally answered. I stopped in to sample a Lychee Martini (Rp70K). I was told by the bartender that most of the patrons were regulars of the legendary Zanzibar. The place is a nice area to chill and hang out with your friends and I ended my evening there enjoying the famous Zanzibar’s Illusion (Rp100K) Other than the Australian Sirloin, they also have which finished my night in pure bliss. Tenderloin (RP100K), Rib Eye (RP90K), and don’t pass on their Wagyu Steaks! The Wagyu Tenderloin A great new addition to what Kemang has to offer, is priced at Rp170K, while the Wagyu D Rump will Batu Panas Steak and BP Lounge is a great place to set you back Rp125K. stop by if you happen to be passing through.

MOYA TAPAS &
WINE BAR Not many can tell you the exact moment of the birth of the tapas, but some suggest that the closest estimate of its origins would probably be sometime in the 18th century. Tapas have evolved along with Spain’s culinary history through the incorporation of ingredients and influences from many different cultures and countries. Ancient Romans, the Moors from North Africa, and the discovery of the New World undoubtedly influenced the development of tapas. Tapas are an extension of the spontaneous Spanish character, chosen and eaten at a whim, accompanied by a light alcoholic beverage, to be shared with family and friends in a friendly and easy-going atmosphere where lively conversation flows. 060 | beatmag.com
The heart of Jakarta is lucky to be graced with the presence of a proper tapas restaurant. The longing to visit Moya has been in my heart for quite some time, having heard good things about this eatery from different sources. Tucked away in a small arcade on Pavillion Apartment, it is probably the only true Spanish restaurant in the city. Recently visiting Moya with a small group of old friends on a Friday night, it was the perfect time to chill and have a relaxing conversation while savoring the Spanish specialties available. The interior is quite impressive, giving a feel as if you’ve been transported to Spain. It was warm and inviting, sophisticated yet relaxed and if you look closely, you’ll find some quirky touches here and there. The prices are on the more expensive side, but then again, authenticity doesn’t come cheap. So if you don’t mind paying a bit extra for a quality meal you will be thoroughly content with what Moya has to offer. Our gracious waitress gave us some suggestions of Moya’s specialties, beginning the experience with a couple of carafes of the famous Moya Sangria (Rp165K) with a selection of tapas plates to be enjoyed between us, all of which were tremendously tasty! We savored some Patatas Bravas (Rp28K); small pieces of potatoes with
a spicy tomato sauce. Next came the Gambas Al Ajillo or sautéed prawns in lemon butter (Rp48K), and Salchica Carne con Hierbas or beef sausages with herbs and to top it off, we ordered the Pollo Estilo Moya (Rp120K) or roast chicken. Of course, we couldn’t go home without trying their famous Paella (Rp120K) which brought to an end one of the best meals I could recall in recent times! Another thing worth mentioning about the place is that the service is excellent, taking good care of their guests without being aggressive or aloof. Something sadly considered a rarity in a big city like Jakarta. The little reunion amongst friends turned out to be a great evening filled with great food, drinks, and merriment! One visit is never enough if you plan to sample every dish that Moya has to offer, so this place will definitely get a revisit from us.

Siapa yang tidak kenal dengan dua artis menawan dari Hollywood ini? Angelina Jolie bisa dibilang fantasi setiap pria, dan Johnny Depp juga menjadi idaman banyak wanita di dunia. Little Fockers Comedy. Director: Paul Weitz. Writer: John Hamburg. Cast: Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Jessica Alba, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand. Think of Ben Stiller (Zoolander, Tropic Thunder) and Robert De Niro on screen together, and I’ll bet the first thought that might cross your mind would be Greg and Jack from Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers. Six years after the last installment, the male nurse and his uptight father-in-law will bring back all the Focker family comedy in the third movie of the Focker trilogy. This time, Greg will need to pass Jack’s final test and show that he has what it takes to be the head of the house. With director Paul Weitz (In Good Company, American Dreamz) and a stellar supporting cast including Owen Wilson, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, and Jessica Alba, be careful not to drop your popcorn bucket from laughing too loud!

in Bazaar Fashion
Concerto 2010
Ari Seputra
It’s been a decade Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia has been published. It’s been a decade Harper’s Bazaar has colored up Indonesian fashion. It’s been a decade Harper’s Bazaar has reported fashion through its eyes. 10 seemed to be the magic number for this year’s Fashion Concerto. This year was the fourth Fashion Concerto, which also celebrated the 10th anniversary of Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia. 10 chosen designers participated in this regular event that is held once every two years. What made this Fashion Techno special was that it injected several new technologies that had never been applied in previous Fashion Concertos such as in the lighting, live music and multimedia that accompanied the fashion show. The sound of electro music with synthesizer was also often heard during the show. The designers also created their masterpieces with the touch of the futuristic. Those heroes who presented their designs were Ari Seputra, Deden Amalia, editor www.fashionesedaily.com Siswanto, Dennyof Wirawan, Kiata Kwanda, Oka Diputra, Sally – style & beauty with attitude. Koeswanto, Sapto Djojokartiko, Sofie, Susan Budihardjo, and Wita for BIN House.
Sofie
Deden Siswanto’s collection came first with his alien-looking models covered with copper bodypainting and towering hairdos. They came complete with robotic movements and emotionless expressions. Sofie designed her collection in dimensional designs with insect-like ensembles with motifs of butterfly wings. Most of her designs were presented in black and white, but she also added other colors such as red and orange like the one Dewi Sandra wore in her performance. Kiata Kwanda had his own perception of “techno-look” preferring simplicity with red bows popping up as details in the back of his black dresses. He was a bit different from other designers that night who mostly related the word “techno” with Alien, steel and even Lady Gaga.

Sapto Djojokartiko
Sally Koeswanto
Sally Koeswanto offered simpler attire but didn’t leave out the alien-like portrayal. Some of Sally’s designs were not too complicated so it looked wearable. Light comes after dark. After the serious expression on the model and dark lighting, Wita for BIN House lightened up the mood with her collection dominated with white. It had gold as the accent and the models smiled and danced cheerfully with Sherina singing in the background. I guess Sapto’s ideas could be labeled as the most unique amongst the collections that night. He applied the assembly technique that coordinated hard material like wood with fabric. Sapto said that the technique was used to add organic character into his designs. It is also reflected people who wanted to “fly”. Oka Diputra brought an imaginative underwater atmosphere to his collection. Bulb lamps on the dresses grabbed the attention, it replicated the shining tentacles of sea creatures. Ari Seputra mixed the illustration of tribal and techno. This African-esque concept was strengthened by bright colors in the makeup, accessories and clothes. Colorful bird feathers also were included as the accent.
Denny Wirawan
In Susan Budihardjo collection, femininity was clearly found. It looked clean with the right amount of details so it wouldn’t be too much. She colored each of the dresses with one tone, then sweetened it with cute accessories like the headpiece and bangles. Also, the shoes were also interesting for those who love to look girly. The feminine concept was also strengthened by the song “Akulah Wanita” by Dewi Sandra at the end of Susan’s presentation. A marching band emerged to open the fashion show of Denny Wirawan collection. It gave a hint on what the collection theme was going to be. Denny was inspired by a military look and the models looked like a group of lovely soldiers. No one at Fashion Concerto mixed the colors as gorgeously as Denny did. His sense of matching gold with other colors like bright red, maroon and turquoise was incredible. Jean-Gabriel Périot is a French artist who treats visual archives as a lively, fluid, and autonomous instrument in his video works. His works are always “subversive” and present new ideas towards certain events, often overlooked by historians and mainstream views. Hafiz, an artist and also the founder of Forum Lenteng, has also produced many video works in which archives are used as vital elements. Both will present their works and invite a public discussion based on these presentations. Moderated by Veronika Kusumaryati

Finally a White Christmas in Indonesia “Flickers and Flakes, Feathers Take Flight” by Septian Harriyoga and Mira Franciska
One thing that differentiates this exhibition with others is the venue. Instead of having artworks hanging on gallery walls, people can take in the works of art of the exhibition titled “Flickers and Flakes, Feathers Take Flight” while enjoying their dinner. The exhibition held from the 9th of December until the 12th of January features a collaboration of photographs and lighting by Septian Harriyoga and Mira Franciska held at Portico Terrace Bistro at Senayan City. “Flickers and Flakes, Feathers Take Flight” itself is a part of ARTiculation – a program highlighting various artworks combined with a restaurant’s interior. Portico was not alone in participating in this program as they were supported by LINGGARseni Gallery. The challenge of having an exhibition at Portico was that most of the restaurant was made of glass.
ARTiculation at Portico Portico Terrace Bistro, Senayan City, Panin Tower, Level Ground Jl. Asia Afrika, Kav 19 - Jakarta Selatan 9 December 2010 to 12 January 2011
Fortunately, the duo’s artworks blended brilliantly with the area and atmosphere. The artworks that were exhibited here were photographs – printed on aluminum – of big fake clouds resembling toothpaste twirls with various outdoor backgrounds. The benefit of hanging them on a glass background was that people were given the feel of ‘a perfect cloud’, despite the rain outside. This would not be possible if they were hung on an ordinary white gallery wall. Sculptures of clouds were also exhibited on the terrace area of the restaurant, equipped with blue LED lamps that resembled city lights. While feathers illuminated by bright lamps were hung from the ceiling. For guest coming to the restaurant at night, snowflake-shaped neon lamps decorated the exterior of the glass wall facing the street – giving a feel of a white Christmas in Jakarta.

Decoding Emiria Soenassa Through The Trail Of Her Mystery Even though she has been named as one of the most prominent women in Indonesian art history, Emiria Soenassa is relatively unknown compared to Sudjojono and Affandi – her colleagues in Persagi, an artist organization under the Dutch administration. To bring her name back to the public’s eye, Bentara Budaya have been exhibiting Emiria Soenassa’s paintings in Yogyakarta for several months and now in Jakarta. Born Emiria Emma Wihelmina Pareira in 1890’s, Emiria Soenassa was the daughter of Tidore’s Sultan, a monarch in North Sulawesi. Living prosperously didn’t satisfy the young Emiria, rebelling against her father’s traditional values and flew to Europe to marry a foreign ambassador. By that time, she learned about art. After a divorce, she returned to Indonesia to start her career as a painter. Even without the support of her family, she continued to produce her works of art. Joining the Indonesian Drawing Experts Association in 1938 she finally exhibited her artwork with 29 other local painters in Bond Kunstringen. When Indonesia came under Japanese rule, Emiria, was the one and only female painter in an exhibition held at Keimin Bunka Shidoso, the Japanese cultural center. She was a woman beyond her time. While most

artists were only interested in using woman as the painting’s object, she took a different approach: turning the woman into creator. Her down-to-earth painting method gave her artworks a feminist tone. Most of the objects in her paintings were Indonesian women from native stories and figures from the middle-low class carrying on with their daily activities. She depicted men from Papua, Balinese women as well as Sulawesi women in her paintings and all featured their own cultural icons such as dresses and head wear. Her point of view of these aspects made her a visionary in modern Indonesian art.. In every painting, Emiria always shows her intimacy with the object. Her oil paintings etch strong emotions, yet are kept natural with pastel dominated colors. Considering the paintings of that era were more extravagant in the use of colors, her artwork seems naïve and primitive. Her paintings were spontaneously done using large strokes on the canvas, a big no-no at that time. Consequently, Mooi Indie painters criticized her work. Nevertheless, she continued creating with her unique style until her ‘disappearance’ during the sixties which was due to untimely passing in 1964. A solo exhibition of her work was showing from Dec. 9-18 at the Bentara Budaya, Jakarta.

Surreal, and Yet, Cute
“Ruba’iyat of Amma Supahilo” by Melissa Sunjaya
Artsphere Gallery
Darmawangsa Square Citywalk, 2nd floor, unit 16 Jl. Darmawangsa VI & IX Jakarta Selatan 27 November – 27 December 2010 Instead of having the usual curatorial note, Melissa Sunjaya completed her solo exhibition with a charming story. Melissa Sunjaya, the founder of Tulisan brand, held her solo exhibition titled “Ruba’iyat of Amma Supahilo” held at Artsphere Gallery, Darmawangsa Square. The exhibition itself consisted of twelve single edition screen-printed illustrations telling the story of Melissa’s reflections regarding the most precious matters of her feeble life. The story begins with Melissa’s encounter with a girl in her sleep who gave her a poem similar to a ruba’iyat (Persian Rhyming stanza consisting of four lines). The poem giving girl’s name was Amma Supahilo. She told Melissa that if she can decipher the poem, all of her nightmares would
end and her heart will stay awake. Awakening from the dream, Melissa created sketches with her pen based on the dreamed ruba’iyat. The story of the ruba’iyat deciphering sketches carry on through all her exhibited works of art. Her vintage aesthetic combined with Russian’s Cyrillic influenced typography adds a quirkiness to her narration. The exhibition also marks the first anniversary of Tulisan, Melissa’s brand of handmade fashion items based on her illustration. Visitors can also take home a piece of the magic through limited edition screen-printed canvas tote bags. A percentage of the proceeds from the exhibition or Tulisan products bought will be donated to the victims of Merapi and Mentawai.

Bali Airport Arrival Hall Expansion
3
The managers of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, PT Angkasa Pura I (API), are currently in the process of expanding the Visa-on-Arrival hall. A larger arrival hall is said to hopefully be in operation before the end of December 2010. The larger arrival hall is expected to help reduce bottlenecks for waiting visitors which tend to occur when several planes arrive within a close time proximity. The peak hours when lines are said to be at their worst occur between 2 pm and 5 pm when arrivals from Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Australia converge on Bali’s sole air gateway. In addition to a larger arrival hall passengers will also be given free mineral water and amplified music to reduce the stress of waiting in line, but the question of whether more immigration officers will be added remains unclear.

food review
Cocoon Recently established Cocoon Beach Club has brought a little touch of the Med to happening Double Six Beach, causing quite a stir amongst residents and visitors alike. Dan Ashcroft stopped by to see what all the buzz is about...
086 | beatmag.com
What exactly is it that defines a beach club? Is it the food? The proximity to the beach? The bright, breezy and laid-back atmosphere? If it’s a combination of all of those things, then Cocoon certainly ticks all the right boxes. Strolling up the sweeping steps to the reception area one hot Seminyak afternoon I’m immediately struck by the open, white interior and relaxed cool ambience. Chill-out tunes spill lazily from the speakers as the friendly and efficient wait staff escort me over to a table on the lower floor of the splitlevel premises. Cocoon has been purposely designed so that wherever you choose to park yourself - be it inside or poolside - you can’t help but take in the dazzling white sands and deep blue of the Indian Ocean whilst grazing away the afternoon. There are dedicated menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner depending on what time of the day you stop by. Being mid afternoon I’m up for something a little lighter, and check out the ever-evolving grazing menu. Chef Stephen Moore has created an incredible mix of Mediterranean style dishes - all perfect for sharing with a few friends or family. To kick things off I order a cold drink and the grilled flatbread with homemade dips (Rp45k/each) - in this case mixed marinated olives, marinated goat’s cheese, babaganoush and chickpea puree. It would be easy to snack on this all day but I manage to reign in the temptation and leave some room for the next serving of cauliflower, goat’s curd and wild rocket salad (Rp 75k). Scattered with pomegranate seeds and a few splashes of balsamic on a long serving dish it’s a delicious mix of flavours and textures. Next up comes the tuna tartare with poached quail eggs and wonton crackers (Rp 75k), the soft tuna combining perfectly with the crunchy crackers. Last up I go for a touch of local sweet with the salad of fresh lychee (Rp 75k) topped off with crunchy merangue pieces and fresh orange sorbet. Cocoon is a fantastic place to hang out at any time of the day, with families, individuals and party animals alike well catered for. Be sure to check out Cocoon Beach Club this coming Christmas and New Year’s Eve, where they offer a wonderful Christmas Lunch (990k++) and on NYE a magical night of transformation, the entire beach club will be transformed into a tantalizing dreamscape boudoir of burlesque and piquant frivolity - Degustation Menu 1.3++ plus other general admission options available.
