Jakarta is getting flooded, but in a cool way. The flow of quality international performers just continues to pour into town and all so early in the year too. We can’t help but wonder what the rest of the year has in store if the early months are already jam packed with great concerts and DJs. On another side of the nightlife entertainment scene, it seems like the old time local DJs are coming out of the woodwork to perform again in droves at clubs all over town. Many people would agree that some of those old tracks were the best and it’s great to see them back again. It seems like 2011 is the year of the retro beats as many clubs have also prepared regular events following this trend. Well whatever you choose to keep yourself entertained, TBJ will be here to inform you about the best things the capital has to offer. Check the What’s On and HereNow sections for the details. Scoop In A Cabin With Who and what exactly is the ‘In A Cabin’ project you may ask? In A Cabin is the collaborative effort of several artists from very different musical backgrounds such as Simon Akkermans from Cmon dari Cmon and Kypski, Hein Bal AKA PAX from Kyteman Hiphop Orchestra, percussion player Frank Wienk Kyteman, Bombay Show Pig composer Mathias Janmaat and producer Jesse Beuker. This assembly of musicians will be performing for a free concert at Eramus Huis on the 17th of February. Yes that’s right, it’s free! Who said you can’t get quality entertainment in Jakarta for free anymore?
Iron Maiden
Janet Jackson
Original Productions recently announced that the Iron Maiden ‘Final Frontier World Tour 2011’ concert has changed venues from Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno to Pantai Carnaval Ancol. The reason for the change in venue is due to a football competition which will be held on the same date. Apart from changing venues, a slight change in ticket prices has also occurred due to the larger venue. Festival A tickets are now Rp750K, festival B tickets are now Rp550K, while festival C tickets are now Rp350K. For those who already bought tickets prior to the announcement of the venue change, no need to worry as they are still valid.
After a long hiatus out of the public eye, Janet Jackson is returning to the limelight with a world tour she has dubbed ‘Number Ones Close Up and Personal World Tour’, and one of the places she’ll be touring through is Jakarta. Unlike her late brother who many times refused to tour through Indonesia, this will be Janet’s first time performing in the country thanks to the promoting efforts of Berlian Entertainment in conjunction with Trilogy Live. The concert itself is scheduled for the 9th of February and will take place at Plenary Hall JCC. Tickets are a little on the steep side for this concert, with prices ranging from Rp900K up to Rp5million.

Scoop Jimmy Eat World Another big name band is set to take Jakarta by storm, thanks to the efforts of Java Musikindo. Fans of alternative rock band Jimmy Eats World will be excited to know that Java Musikindo have cut a deal with the band to perform in Jakarta on the 3rd of April. The concert will be held at Tennis Indoor Senayan like the many Java Musikindo’s concerts before. Information for pre-sale tickets have yet to be announced, but remember to get those early bird tickets fast, everyone knows how fast they sell out.
La Caravane Passe French musical group La Caravane Passe will be performing at Rolling Stone Café on the 17th of March. The group is known for their hypnotic performances, which combine alternative rock beats with a gypsy vibe to create a style of music that they dub “melodramatic popular songs”. The group may be French, but they also perform in other languages as well including Spanish, Serbian and German. Those with an eclectic taste or fans of alternative styles of music be sure not to miss this performance, and who knows, maybe La Caravane Passe may slip an Indonesian song into their set.

Ayu Laksmi Svara Semesta Like having Ayu Laksmi as her natural daughter, mother earth is presented well in Svara Semesta. Rich ethnic and contemporary sounds of goodness are clearly what she believes in, and form a solid foundation for this strong album. Well produced and directed with love, this Bali darling sings her story of the universe surrounding us. Pass this CD on to a visiting friend, it’s without doubt a sweet mantra to play over and over again.
Weezer Death to False Metal Perhaps the cover of ‘Unbreak My Heart’ isn’t the best way to kick off this album. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Weezer are tucked in the midst of a case of writer’s block, but don’t give up so easily because the rest of the album celebrates the geek-rock’s signature sound much like the previous album ‘Pinkerton’. Expect weird track names, alternative guitar effects, mockery of daily mind states, and general lunacy as they go once again unto the geeky breach.

In The Spirit of
New Year By Erza S.T.
The first month of 2011 is almost at an end, and so far most of us are still trying to adjust our life back to its normal pace. This is all right so long as you have good music to accompany you. Not so long ago we had Ananda Sukarlan with his own version of Jakarta’s New Year concert. I have to say it was such a great concert and a great way to start the year. However, for those of you who missed the concert, not to worry. You can still catch up with another New Year concert and this time with more a western flavour in the program. As you all might know, the New Year concert tradition was first started in Vienna back in 1939, and was conducted by Clemens Krauss. Performing only compositions by Johan Strauss II, the first New Year concert at the Grober Saal (large hall) in Musikverein was an instant success, and became a world phenomenon over the years. Many famous conductors including the legendary Herbert Von Karajan conducted this concert, and the Strauss family waltz compositions remain the main program. This upcoming 23rd January, the ‘2011 New Year Concert’ is coming to the Aula Simfonia Jakarta, with founder Dr. Stephen Tong as conductor. Accompany by the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and the Jakarta Oratorio Society, it seems to me that Dr. Stephen Tong is really aiming big this time. The grandiose gesture can also be seen from the program selection that includes several famous opera overtures, arias, and even Handel’s everlasting ‘Messiah’.
044 | 044 beatmag.com
To make this concert even more interesting, Dr. Stephen Tong has invited four incredible classical singers from the region. Ji Young Jun - a young impressive soprano from Korea, lyric dramatic mezzo soprano Anna Koor from Singapore, renowned bass baritone Andrew Fernando from the Philippines, and our own Indonesian tenor Stevanus Darmawan join forces to surely make this concert a memorable one. Together, this fantastic four are planning to entertain you with many famous arias from Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti and many others. They will also be the soloists on Handel’s Messiah. It is also interesting to note that this concert will also have Strauss’s famous compositions such as ‘Blue Danube’ and ‘Tristh Tratsch Polka’. If you want to know how it feels like to really experience auberordentliches konzert (extraordinary concert) in Jakarta, then this concert is a must. I just hope that Dr. Stephen Tong will also perform Strauss’s beloved ‘Radetzky March’ and complete our New Year concert experience, Vienna style.

MARCELL SIAHAAN
What music are you into at the moment? BIP new album, ‘Berangkat’.
beatmag.com 046
What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? Metal Church (self-titled). It was back in the early 1980's and I was cheated by my eldest brother to buy that record at Aquarius Bandung. He 'influenced' me to use my money (even though we'd been given the same amount of money by our parents) rather than his to buy the record he actually liked. As a naïve little brother I tried to impress him and proudly bought that record with my own money, but then it was taken 'slowly' by my brother. A couple of years later I knew that I was cheated :D But, it was a good record. It contains a cover of Deep Purple's ‘Highway Star’. What are your all-time favourite albums? Maxwell's ‘MTV Unplugged’, Soundgarden's ‘Badmotorfinger’, Metallica's ‘…And Justice For All’, Aerosmith's ‘Permanent Vacation’, Korn's ‘Life is Peachy’, Phil Collins' ‘...But Seriously’, all Seal's albums. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Metallica's ‘St. Anger’. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Next time I want to be a member of the Rockerfeller dynasty that owns the World Bank. What songs do you choose to start your weekend? The song titled ‘No Excuses’ by Alice in Chains, and ‘Miss You in a Heartbeat’ by Def Leppard. And songs you choose to end your weekend? The song titled ‘Old Friends’ by Everything But The Girl and ‘Like You'll Never See Me Again’ by Alicia Keys.
Recently Marcell has been focusing on three things: being in the studio working on his upcoming solo album, following up the recording project with Konspirasi, and spending his spare time learning the martial art Wing Chun.

Indonesia Menurut
Morfem
After over a year established and already at cultlike status, Morfem have finally released their debut album, ‘Indonesia’. It contains seven songs, five of which are in full band format, the rest in acoustic. ‘Pilih Sidang atau Berdamai’ has been picked as the first single. In this self-produced album, Jimi Multhazam (vocals, band leader), Pandu Fathoni (guitar), Bramasta J. Sasongko (bass), and Freddie Warnerin (drums) also supply two songs with English lyrics, both written before Jimi founded Morfem, when his songwriting was different from today. Speaking of genre, they’re still loyal to what they’ve always been doing: a mix-match between punk rock, pop with a folky tendency, with a dash of Pandu Fathoni’s fuzzy, roaring guitar. To raise public awareness, very soon Jimi (supported by Henry, his long time visual art partner) will work on the video clip of “Pilih Sidang atau Berdamai”. So, stick around and stay updated by regularly visiting the Morfem website at http://morfem. tumblr.com.

impunan hulubalang power pop asal Jakarta, Alexa, kembali menyatroni blantika musik Indonesia. Still under the same umbrella, Warner Music Indonesia, this quintet offers the public something quite unique: 3 English songs (out of 13) and a few more rockoriented compositions (5 out of 13). According to Aqi (vocal) and co, the reason to include songs with English lyrics is like a stepping stone for going international. Although they don't really have very high expectations, this power pop group said at least there's a target to be accomplished. Speaking of theme, love is still dominating. This is expressed clearly on their first single "Andai" which talks about waiting and hoping for the love to come with such a happy, uptempo beat—and not ending up being cheese and bubble gummy. This latest release is actually a collection of songs compiled and written while they were touring. One of Indonesia's top sound engineers, Indra Q, also helped with the mixing and mastering. Turn on your radio to listen to their single or see them live on January 29 in Bintaro Jaya and keep yourself updated with www. alexatheband.com.

D’SPICE Dining Terrace
It’s always nice to stumble upon a new eatery that hits all the right notes. Welcome to a great new place in Kemang called D’Spice Dining Terrace.
D’Spice is located at the former Pasir Putih restaurant that used to be a popular place to dine in Kemang. I recently visited D’Spice for that nostalgic reason. My friends and I used to frequent Pasir Putih quite some time ago, and recently one of the guys in our group who now lives abroad was in town again. So, on a whim, we decided to have a reunion at one of our favourite old hang-out spots. We really didn’t know what to expect from D’Spice. The restaurant is now about half the size of the old Pasir Putih, but we were in for a nice surprise. D’Spice is beatmag.com 058
a very inviting place. The first thing you notice is the swimming pool and the outdoor seating area. Right away you feel like you’ve made an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. We sat indoors in the comfort of air conditioning, loving how the glass walls let in the natural late afternoon light, brightening up the place. It is casual, comfortable, and cozy. Our little reunion got off to a good start as we talked about the good old days, but this new place kind of gives you a sense of better things to come. Before we knew it, it was time for dinner. D’Spice has plenty of Western fare such as steaks and sandwiches to pick, but we were in the mood for some Indonesian food. In a way, it was a way for us to say ‘welcome back’ to our friend who lives abroad. I ordered the nasi goreng buntut balado (39.9k), and I must say, it was an excellent choice! The fried rice is complemented well by the West Sumatran-styled spicy oxtail. Another dish worth mentioning is the nasi bakar kamboja (45.9k); a delectable blend of grilled rice with anchovies, spiced chicken and meat, tempeh with chili, and sautéed veggies. The Cirebon-style empal gentong (39k) won the heart, and stomach, of one of our party - possibly due to the flavoursome currylike soup. The tasty Vietnamese beef pho noodle (34.5k) is another dish worth trying. As for the drinks, we ordered some of D’Spice’s signature concoctions. The orange twist (orange,
peach, passion fruit juice) and the D’Spice paradise (pomegranate, strawberry, cranberry juice) are as refreshing as they come. But my personal favourite is the Kemang Fresh Maker; a great blend of apple juice, nata de coco, soda water, and selasih. It reminded me of one of those invigorating drinks for breaking your fast! These drinks are priced at 25.5k each. D’Spice dining terrace was opened in June last year, but it is already a great addition to Kemang’s dining scene. The attentive staff informed us that many events and functions are also held here; from engagement parties to business meetings to mini concerts, and even kids birthday parties! On Saturday evenings, an acoustic band provides the entertainment. I am sure that my friends and I will be visiting D’Spice again and again in the future. We have found an oasis!

SALUTE! Located in the heart of Kemang, Splash is a favourite place to let your hair down and just hang out over some inexpensive beer and good company. It’s been a while, but my latest visit there was a good one.

It
’s good to have a casual place to chill like Splash. You can wear your Bermuda shorts and flipflops and still feel welcomed. Unfortunately for myself and a few workmates, it was a weeknight and things in the office still required a little attention. However, we felt like we needed to get out of the office, and took it outside. Literally. So we went to Splash to get some fresh air, setting up the ‘office’ on this little corner called ‘Salute’. Our ideas started to flow freely as we ordered our Bintangs (20k) and Heinekens (22k). It’s a good thing that we came on a weeknight when it was not as busy or noisy as the weekend. Amazingly we actually did get some work done, and our work discussion lasted for quite a while until we started to get hungry. Our waiter came over and suggested some good grub for us, with the Sumatran-style nasi goreng kampung (27k) catching my attention. It’s an interesting blend of chicken, shrimp, anchovies and eggs over fried rice. And when it came, it did not disappoint. This is one good fried rice, just like your grandma used to
make (Well, that is if she was from Sumatra). We also ordered the kwetiau goreng (22.5k) and the homemade pizza (45k). Both hit just the right spot for us that night - the kweitau (flat noodle) spiced just right and the Pizza a good combo of chicken, beef, and mushroom neither too small nor too big. We also met the three lovely ladies who owned this cozy little corner: Yovie Lubis, Eva Isara, and Ebe. They told us that on a busy weekend, don’t be surprised to see all of them mucking in, taking customers’ orders, mixing drinks, and even sweating in the kitchen! Some celebrity friends of theirs like Happy Salma, Audy Item, and Rieke Dyah Pitaloka are also regulars here. Before we left, we got to sample some of Salute’s signature drinks such as the lychee martini, strawberry martini, and capiroska (50k each) - all are definitely worth a try. Other ones worth mentioning are the strawberry daiquiri (45k) and the bir pletok (50k). The latter is an interesting mix of beer and some liquor, which will give you quite a buzz. It is nice to have some relaxing drinks al fresco in a busy city like Jakarta. Splash in Kemang is a good, casual, and no frills place to do it. And make sure that you stop by this friendly and cozy little corner called Salute. My friends and I are already planning another visit there this weekend! [budi iskandar]

The Green Hornet Action, Comedy. Director: Michel Gondry. Writers: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg. Cast: Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, Tom Wilkinson. Rising Hollywood comedy actor, Seth Rogen (Superbad, Fanboys) partners with famous Mandarin actor Jay Chou (Curse of the Golden Flower, True Legend) to fight mob crime as masked heroes with kung fu action and advanced-technology in this comedy action flick. Originally adapted from a radio series in America back in the 1930s, the bumbling superhero and savvy sidekick are out for non-stop action and laughs in this remake of the spoken word classic. The ever-lovely Cameron Diaz (Charlie’s Angels, Knight and Day) and award-winning German actor, Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) co-star as the eye candy and nasty baddie, so prepare your masks, costumes, capes and toy guns, and get lost in this wild ride!
Biutiful Drama, Foreign. Writer & Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu. Cast: Javier Bardem, Maricel Álvarez and Hanaa Bouchaib.

This is a story of a man in free fall. On the road to redemption, darkness lights his way. Connected with the afterlife, Uxbal (Javier Bardem - No Country for Old Men) is a tragic hero and father of two kids who is sensing the touch of death coming his way. He struggles with a tainted reality and a fate that works against him in order to forgive, for love and forever. Make no mistake that this is a deep and moving movie full of serious life drama. With director Alejandro González Iñárritu (21 Grams, Babel) calling the shots, this film is already ensured to get a nod for the upcoming Oscar nominations. It might not be the best option when you aren’t in a reflective frame of mind, but given time this wonderful film will stir your emotions long after leaving the cinema.
No Strings Attached Romance, Comedy. Director: Ivan Reitman. Writer: Elizabeth Meriwether. Cast: Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, Kevin Kline, Cary Elwes, Ludacris. This film may be just the right rom-com to lighten your mood for the romantic month of February, especially for girls anticipating Valentine’s Day next month. The story is about Emma (Natalie Portman, Closer, The Other Boleyn Girl), a doctor who just wants to have a casual no strings attached sexual relationship with her friend, Adam (Ashton Kutcher, A Lot Like Love, Spread) only to find things get complicated when emotions and love start to grow from Adam. With both handsome sexy Kutcher and sweet pretty Portman sharing romance on screen (and a bit of relationship humour to keep couples giggling), this is also just the right movie to share a box of caramel popcorn or maybe chocolate on a date with your lover, fling, or even stranger you have a crush on! 063 beatmag.com

Black Pants Will Never Go Out of
If
Style
there’s one thing that will never go out of style, it’s black pants. Some things are just meant to last forever. Whether 2010 or 2011, we’re still vouching for black pants. No girl should live without owning a pair. Luckily, black pants are showing a strong presence on pre-fall 2011 runways. So if you haven’t got any (which I’m sure is almost impossible) or you need a new pair to replace your old ones it couldn’t be a better time to do so. The pre-fall 2011 runways are dominated by slim black pants that are paired with simple shirts or jackets, so any style is a must to invest in this year as long as they fit you perfectly. Especially now that it’s the sale season, it’s just the best time of the year to hunt for your perfect pair.

How to wear black pants? Not only will black pants be your best friend at work to compliment your suits and shirt, but you can also use them for other occasions as well. If you want to pair them with your jacket, try a nipped-at-the-waist suit with a wide-leg or flared black pants. Short or boxy jackets will be a good match for your stovepipe, cigarette or straight pants. If you want to wear the boyfriend blazer then try to balance it out with slimmer or skinner pants so you wouldn’t look ‘drowned’ by your attire. For a casual night out with your friends pair them with simple shirt, top or jacket, whereas for a more formal event try tops made with a combination of lace or sequins or materials such as silk or chiffon silk that will give an instant glamorous effect to your pants. Black pants can also look sexy if you play the right card. Paired with a more revealing top such as a low cut or fitted bustier. I like how Blake Lively mixes her loose cut pants with a sexy top. Black pants for different body shapes. Even though black always gives a slimming effect, read our tips first before deciding which ones to buy. Pear-Shaped • Choose pants that won’t add extra inches to your waist. That means no unnecessary details on the waist such as extra waistbands, extra fancy bands or the like. • Look for flat-lying pockets as seen in the picture above which will compliment your body shape and avoid on-seam slash pockets. • I find that it’s best to avoid a low waist cut because it just doesn’t compliment pear-shaped bodies at all. • Also avoid flare pants or skinny pants because it’s just too dramatic. Straight, narrow or skinny legs • The perfect pants would be boyish, cigarette pants or cropped pants, because you can just live
with them without looking like a chunk of meat. Big thighs • Opt for slightly wide-leg pants that are not too loose through the hips. Wide-leg or slouchy pants don’t have to be all loose. They should hug your hips, but not too tightly. The crotch shouldn’t hang too low as well, unless it’s the model of the pants such as harem pants. • A big no-no is tapered pants because they will exaggerate the difference between the shape of your thighs and calves. • For a more casual look you can opt for a really wide cut but for a more formal look opt for something slimmer which still have that wide pants fit. Short legs • Choose something that has a slim shape and wear with heels to elongate your legs. • Cropped pants are definitely a no because they will make your legs look shorter. • You should also avoid low-rise pants and stick with mid-height rise. Splurge or Steal? Splurge on classic look, menswear pants that rely highly on fit because you wear these kinds of pants more often. Choose a pair with good quality of fabric. I prefer more cotton blends and avoid too much polyester because of the hot weather we have here. I would also avoid wool blend pants, because they can be quite itchy. Believe me, these kind of pants are worth every rupiah you will spend on them. Steal on pants that you will only wear on the weekend such as jersey, cargo or other laidback style pants. There are only two days in the weekend and what are the chances that you will wear them every weekend? What are your personal tips for finding the perfect pants? Spotted any recently? Tell us! Extra-Muros: Architectures de l’enchantement Based on a project developed by the Cité de l’architecture et du Patrimoine, the ExtraMuros exhibition is made up of photographs and critical essays of 40 architectural masterpieces and anonymous constructions. Displaying only recent works, the focus is on structures that we ‘see’, but never really ‘look at’ with the attention they deserve. Extra-Muros will also be an opportunity to promote artistic exchange between Indonesia and France through an exhibition of models produced by Indonesian architecture students. How do we capture the restlessness of the young? To answer that question, eight artists from Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta have participated in a residence program at Ancol Art Market. For six months, Luthfi Anwar, Michael Binuko, Muhammad Yusuf Siregar, Patriot Mukmin, Rizki Andina, Saroni, Sutrisno, and Walid Syartowi Basmalah have processed and interacted with each other in various contexts, both physically and socially. This exhibition gives an idea of how a generation articulates their restlessness in the form of art. Not just artworks, these artists also respond to the display spaces as a challenging part of their creative process. January 20th – 31st North Art Space, Jl. Lodan Timur no. 7, Pasar Seni Ancol, Jakarta.

Jakarta through Canadian Eyes A Canadian artist using Indonesia as his main subject is not as strange as it seems for Ken Pattern, who has resided in this country since 1988. His artworks are currently being exhibited in the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta, and will be there until the 4th of February. He uses three different techniques to create his many realistic pieces of art. By combining stone lithography, acrylic painting and paper drawings he is able to produce realistic photo works of art. Many of his pen and ink drawings and lithographs are of the urban landscapes of Jakarta and feature the people who inhabit the area. His paintings of rural Indonesia and other areas in South East Asia and Canada share some of the same characteristic details as his drawings and lithographs.
The way Ken portrays the images of Jakarta is very intimate and filled with vivid detail. He has wandered the streets of Jakarta on foot to help capture the emotional side of the typical Jakarta urban kampung. He is very familiar with the riverside kampungs, having frequently passed along the murky waters of the city in a small rowing boat. Ken also shows his concerns regarding the environment in several of his pieces. One rainforest related work of art in particular, inspired his journey to Hawaii. If you wish to see the works of a true realist on display this is an exhibition not to be missed. [Bowo]

Art + New Medium You
&
beatmag.com 078
In this multimedia age, art is no longer viewed as one artwork seen through the eyes of its creator. Some art pieces nowadays require the participation of the audience to make it work. This kind of experience is given with the exhibition titled ‘Influx, Multimedia Art Strategies in Indonesia’, which was a part of Ruangrupa’s 10th anniversary at Galeri Cipta II, Taman Ismail Marzuki and held from January 7th to the 27th. The exhibition captures the zeitgeist of a generation which is challenged by technology in an era when new mediums are born, presenting a void ready to be filled with creative ideas. Representing this generation in the exhibition with their latest art pieces were Geber Modus Operandi, Venzha, AG Kus Widananto (Jompet), Agus Suwage, Performance Fucktory, House of Natural Fiber, Krisna Murti, Tintin Wulia, Ade Darmawan, Hardiman Radjab, Hafiz, Widianto Nugroho, Duto Hardono, Common Room, Muhamad Akbar and Prilla Tania. The use of new mediums in their artworks offers a different method of experiencing art and in a way brings out the inner adventurer of people. An example of this is in the art piece by Krisna Murti, titled ‘(Miss) Call Me, Please’. He creates an installment incorporating angklungs (a traditional instrument), which are attached to a set of electronic devices. When a device dials a number, the angklung of the dialed number plays a specific tune. By using the other devices, the angklungs automatically play different tunes, with each device never playing the same tune twice. Many installations look more like a science project than a work of art, distorting the difference between an art gallery and a science museum. ‘Intelligent Bacteria’ by the House of Natural Fiber (HONF) plays the sounds of microbes used for fertilizing grapes for wine making. While Widianto Nugroho’s ‘Generatio Spontanea’ uses computer software to make colourful lines and spectrums controlled by a computer mouse moved by passersby. This piece was quite unique as many found it hard to resist the urge to move the mouse and add to the already existing scribbles. Although the exhibition’s main theme generalized new and futuristic mediums for art, some installations used an old and almost-forgotten medium, the cassette tape. Duto Hartono and Ade Darmawan presented an homage to the good-old cassette tape in their installations. ‘Nona Hollis’ by Ade Darmawan simultaneously plays four cassettes
Influx, Multimedia Art Strategies in Indonesia Galeri Cipta II, Taman Ismail Marzuki January 7-27 2011.
of multi-level marketing motivational speeches blaring noisily through loudspeakers - almost as if trying to mock the over-the-top MLM promises in a rackety and annoying way. Using the same medium, Duto Hartono has created a tribute to John Cage in his ‘How To Perform John Cages 4:33 On A Loop Delay As Demonstrated By A Band Of Cacti’ installation by placing a cassette recorder in front of a cactus and distancing it about one meter away. The cassette players were bridged by the same tape that looped continuously. From there, people could vaguely hear the previously recorded cactus voice out the song a few moments later. Overall, the main difference between the new age medium for art compared to the old ways is that the artistic part of an artwork is not just in the hands of the artist, but also requires the audience’s participation to make it come alive and bring out its true meaning. It may be a good idea to do your own thing until you run out of inspiration, then just hide out or go home. You need to use some of that great energy to take care of your own business, no matter how many requests come your way from outside. You’re bursting with great energy, and now is the best time to make life a little easier to handle - tidy up, rearrange things or institute a new organizational system. You’ll amaze co-workers and family! You can feel the good energy flow through you as you take care of the most routine tasks and responsibilities. Use that creative energy! You see the truth for what it is, and it will certainly open your eyes. From this point onwards you will know exactly what you have to do.
You’ve got to do your best to feel good about yourself, and that could be all it takes this time. It’s one of those times when it’s great to be you, but almost as good to be one of your entourage. Your work group or family needs a change of some kind, and you’ve got a few ideas you want to try out. Your reputation doesn’t usually worry you all that much - you know that you can pull off just about anything no matter what others may think. Health should improve, so long as you resist the temptation to be overly self-indulgent. There’s good news, though: You can overcome this and end up looking much better than you did before! It might help to let go completely and let everything turn out as it does.

Your ability to keep going when your friends and co-workers fade is legendary, and you are so energized right now that you may need to just pass them by early on. That’s not to say that success is impossible, merely that your guarded nature should help you make the best of it. You’ll soon find that you can find solutions to any problem if you keep an open attitude. Your willpower is never in question, but you may have to get your friends to confirm it with a staring contest or something similar. Your fierce energy makes it easier than ever for you to transform yourself. Openness is vital - don’t let yourself hide anything, no matter how sensitive. You might actually be able to keep going all night at this rate. Your great, fiery energy feels as if it’s limitless, and your friends are sure to drop off eventually.
Use your amazing powers of negotiation and charm to sort things out and move them closer to where you want them to be. No one can do this sort of thing quite like you can. And you know it! Prioritize your tasks by placing a greater importance on the things for which other people depend on you - and then take care of your own needs if you have the time. You’re brimming with positive energy and you’re able to channel it directly into promising projects. Try to capture your thoughts and retain them. Jot down notes on your laptop or record them on a portable tape recorder. You have a special gift for teasing facts out into the open, mainly because you can adopt a non-confrontational approach.
Gemini May 21 - June 21 You could feel stimulated and inspired. You’ll have a lot of physical energy, and you could even feel a bit manic! Try to center yourself. You may have a hard time keeping up with the flow of activity - but not because you’re disorganized! Stress from overwork or too much exercise could have you feeling under the weather, and you could well appreciate a little tender loving care. It may be worthwhile to string them along for a while until they decide to take a risk on you. You need excitement and you may seek out unusual and stimulating situations. You feel restless, wanting to do something new. You’ve got a real talent for getting your way, and right now you’re practically on fire!
Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Career-related movements and business meetings should go well. Publicity at this time is good for your reputation. Your mind is alert, events stimulate ideas and interest, and you may need to move about more than usual. Some important decisions are needed now. The current aspect at play implies that what you do could lead to some intense and revealing insights for both of you. Go to it! Take this time to get people to help you get it back on track and in the air. Others might help you succeed in unexpected ways. Take chances to get ahead. You’re full of yourself - but that’s a good thing! Impress with confidence. Fooling around can be fun, but keep your head down and work with purpose. It suggests that you might have to put yourself out there, set your boundaries or prove yourself. If you can keep things simple, you will stand a better chance of getting a few things done. Next, reward yourself and unwind with the easy social atmosphere that you crave. You need to get out there and try something new - your energy is driving you to make a change!
You may find that your people have ideas, but if you think for a few minutes, you’re sure to come up with your own. Try to get as organized as you can. Pick one thing and follow through on it. Try to stay focused and clear so that you can move along rapidly. You’re seeing patterns where others see chaos. Take it to the next level. You might be considering your options. The energy of the time could put you in a reflective mood. You have enough good ideas. You don’t need to take credit for someone else’s. Perhaps they’re going to help you with a task, or vice-versa. There may not be anything flash or particularly glamorous about this association, but none-the-less it can be comforting to have people who are solid citizens in our lives like this.

Initiatives you take now have a good chance of working out. You and your plans can be well received. You can be competitive but not in a grabbing way. It’s a good time for you to step back from the planning and look at how everything seems to fit together. Look with fresh eyes. Present outcome is up in the air - and you have a fair amount of influence over it. It is helping you organize your thoughts. It’s a good time to do business - but you’ve got to keep up! You’re seeing details everyone else is missing. That could mean that you’re able to take initiative and move ahead, or it could mean that you’re starting to crack! The odds are on the former, though. You are busy exploring a range of interesting and unusual ideas.
You could be in the mood to make some new friends. A social, playful energy will be in the air. You are in a really good place right now - especially if you are seeking to reinvigorate your love life! Your energy is just about perfect and you may find that your friends and colleagues are willing to pick up after you. Though most other people are pretty intensely social right now, you may be better off flying solo. Life’s mysteries can take on more interest, but at a more mundane level, keeping on top of commercial and financial dealings is essential. You are more in tune with your resources, money and talents and your sense of self-worth. You can handle all the action, though you wouldn’t mind a little break. One should be coming up pretty soon.
Your head is spinning a bit. You’ve got some good energy trapped in there, but you need to make a big decision before you can release it. Unfortunately, that may be easier said than done. This is a really good time to organize your memories they are stronger than usual, and you might want to write down your take on long-ago events to keep it fresh and alive for the future. The discussion that results could bring more ideas to both of you. The celestial atmosphere hints that as a result, the two of you just might sit together for over an hour or so, mulling over the information in silence. In your professional life, indicate a change in your activities, provided you manage to improve communication with the people around you. In order to achieve this you need to make an effort to express your ideas without constantly fearing that they will fail.
Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 Shore up your primary relationships - they may not need much work, but making the effort shows you care and scores you points. Later, your hot energy lights up the night! Your good energy is just right for mixing things up with your friends and family and getting folks to see the light. If you’re getting to know someone better, you may have high hopes. And that’s good and you may want to see the best in this person. But keep a little bit of yourself back. This is a good time to get to know your mates a little better. The energy of the time will be encouraging people to open up more, and to share from the heart. You may be able to make some progress at work or in your love life without exerting yourself too hard. Make it work!

Long Road to Lovina Many tourists who come to Bali tend to spend most of their vacation time around the southern part of the island. Not many know that the north of Bali also has its fair share of beaches for snorkeling, diving and dolphin watching.

paddy fields filled the air. The pain in my backside soon became unbearable so I stopped just a few clicks from the temple location. I was taking some time to enjoy the view when I was approached by a small group of monkeys. Tempted to reach out to them, I kept my distance remembering they were wild. Once a bit of the feeling had returned to my nether region, I saddled up once again.
T
he road to Lovina is a long journey, about a two to three hour drive or ride from Kuta depending on road conditions, but it’s a trip travelers must experience. I decided to take the trip, giving myself a little challenge while I was at it. The challenge was to ride my motorbike solo to Lovina, departing when the sun was at its hottest, arriving before the sunset, taking nothing but the clothes on my back and a small bottle of water. It may not sound very challenging, but believe me, the buttock-punishing ride on a hard saddled motorbike like mine is truly physically exhausting - even when the sights you are likely to see on the journey are second to none. So with a full tank of gas and a bottle of water tucked under my jacket I was off. After consulting with my map, I decided the quickest route up north was to pass through Bedugul. Having been there many times before, I knew the road up there was fun, yet little did I realise that after passing the lake side temple the roads become much more challenging and treacherous. I chose the right time to go up north, as it was harvest time and the smell of freshly cut
A few kilometers from Bedugul temple, I entered the mountainous region, where the roads began to twist and turn - the Sunset Road this certainly ain’t. Now, if you’re a seasoned rider like me, you’ll be tempted to speed through the corners like a GP racer, but heed my warning; one side of the road is a cliffs edge with no guard rails while the other is covered with trees. Leaning and speeding through corners does go some way to lessen the strain on my buttocks, but other than that don’t try it at home. The views from the road are also breathtaking, but I advise you to focus on the road as the turns are many and pop up unexpectedly, so either stop to take it all in or continue on your way. The final stretch to Lovina was pretty uneventful compared to the journey to get there, as the lush green that lead me on my way soon changed to houses and shops. An odd thing about Lovina is that where most beaches either have a central restaurant or hotel, Lovina lacks an obvious focal point or public beach. However, I got to the waters edge just in time to see the sun dip over the horizon. At first the plan was to head home after the sunset, but the pain in my backside and the fading light suggested that I spend the night. This eventually lead to more unexpected adventures and challenges, which will be revealed in the next edition. To be continued... [Rinaldi]

Batan Waru Jl. Kartika Plaza, Kuta | Tel: 766303

A warung style cafĂŠ on the stretch of Kartika Plaza which offers up an array of delicious Indonesian cuisine, guaranteed to appease any hungry belly.
The
area around Kuta and Legian is scattered with places offering different worldwide cuisine and fusion fare, but it’s hard to come by a place that offers true blue Indonesian cooking in a more swanky setting. One or two places may spring to mind but none offer an atmosphere quite like this place. Located on Kartika Plaza a few steps away from Discovery Mall, Batan Waru is a small café with an interior reminiscent of old school warungs. When you first step into Batan Waru, you are immediately welcomed by the very friendly staff, prepared to help you in any way they can. As I was lead to my table, I couldn’t help but notice the counter at the center which looked so much like the little warungs I came across when traveling through Java as a kid with my parents, with an assortment of colourful bottled drinks displayed on the table and a glass display showcasing cigarettes. For an extra old school touch, there were three large glass containers filled with an assortment of rice crackers, now that’s something you’ll only ever see in run down roadside warungs these days. The framed posters, whirling fans and wooden furniture added to the classic feel of the place.
sambal. A very filling meal indeed - also available as a vegetarian option. Another specialty is the Ikan Woku Belanga (Rp64K), which is a special fish stew from North Sulawesi served with a lontong rice cake. Although I was quite full after these two generously portioned meals, I was curious to try the Pepes Ikan Laut (Rp71K), to see if it was anything like my mother used to make. It was a little different from what I grew up with because the dish used traditional Balinese ingredients whilst my mother’s was based on a Javanese recipe. Different, but still very tasty.
To wash everything down, a variety of beverages are available, from the bottled drinks displayed on the counter to a selection of juices and mocktails. If Now about the food. Batan Waru does offer several you happen to want a drink with a little more kick, international dishes on the menu, but some of the Batan Waru also offers a large selection of cocktails best choices are the Indonesian dishes. The most to try and all at an affordable price. popular item on the menu is the Nasi Campur Batan Waru (Rp64K) which is a Balinese mixed rice So if you happen to be passing through Kartika Plaza plate served with a fried thin slice of beef tenderloin, on the lookout for something a little less ‘touristy’ red chili chicken, beef sate, long beans in Kalasan and a little more authentic, you won’t go far wrong sauce, a whole prawn fritter and an egg doused in with a visit to Batan Waru. large crowd assembled at the Hard Rock Cafe to witness Atlanta’s finest old-school hip-hop legends. Lead vocalist Speech whipped the crowd into a frenzy with some classic singalong tracks from way back including ‘Ease my Mind’, ‘Mr. Wendall’ and ‘Everyday People’, as well as a generous helping of newer tracks from current album ‘Strong’. A heady mix of young fans and a few old enough to remember it all the first time around got down on the dance floor, enjoying the feelgood beats, soulful vocals and tongue-twisting raps.
