To erase this negative stereotyping, a nonprofit community calling themselves ’Keep The Party Alive’ are encouraging party people around the world to stay away from drugs. Their first step is by handing out Keep The Party Alive bracelets to the drugfree clubbing crowd to prove they respect their bodies without substance abuse. Other efforts the community are working on are giving moral support and gathering donations to help aid rehab victims in their recovery. Have Been The duo formed by Endah Widiastuti (vocals, guitar) and Rhesa Aditya (bass) are a well-known local indie duet in the capital. They first met when they both worked in a band together back in 2003. They began working together on several tracks with Rhesa filling in for bass on several of Endah’s songs. From then on the duo became inseparable, performing at various campus events together. In the end they decided to give a name to their musical duo and simply used their first names. Inspired by several international and local musicians such as Warman Nasution from TOR, Cozy Street Corner, Alanis Morissete, Norah Jones plus many others, Endah N Rhesa have created a small following wherever they perform, be it Jazz festivals or Blues shows, their fanbase grows larger with every performance. are Now The name Endah N Rhesa is synonymous with good quality music. The duo are set to perform on Valentine’s day at Immigrant for a romantic themed party that’s been titled ‘Love Machine’. Endah Rhesa
So, Mr. Duncan Sheik, tell us a little of what you’ve been up to lately and what can we expect from you in the year 2011?
be a bit like a modern version of ‘Sweeney Todd’ - only with designer suits and electronic music inspired by the 80's.
I have a new record coming out this spring called ‘Covers 80's’ which is made up of acoustic covers of mostly electronic bands and artists from the UK who influenced me as a teenager. So Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Talk Talk etc ....
If you were given the opportunity to choose between composing music for the stage or writing songs for a new album, which would you instantly jump at?
Call me old school, but your first hit ‘Barely Breathing’ is still on my iPod’s most played list. Are there any interesting tales behind the song? Only that it was the last song I wrote as an afterthought for my first record and I didn't play it live for a long time because I was over it! But I play it these days ; ) You’ve been involved in many musicals and even won several Tony awards for them; how did you get into that and why? I met a playwright named Steven Sater in NYC because we are both practicing Buddhists. We decided to collaborate on some theatre projects. I thought it would be interesting to try to re-imagine the style of the music one hears in a theatre context, and seven years later ‘Spring Awakening’ became a big hit on Broadway. I never thought that would ever happen! You were nominated for a Grammy back in ’98 for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and eventually ten years later grabbed the award, but this time for Best Musical Show Album. Say you did win the Grammy in ’98. Would you still have considered composing musicals?
I am very happy to do both - and I think having different mediums in which to work keeps the creative process a lot more fun and a lot more fresh. Will this be your first time to Indonesia (Bali & Jakarta)? I was here in the summer of '07 in Nusa Dua, Bali for vacation. It was brilliant and I was very happy to be asked back! What can we expect from your performance in Bali & Jakarta? It will be an acoustic Valentines day kind of show with my friend Rachel Yamagata. She is a brilliant artist in her own right and everyone should check her out if you haven't already. Anyway hopefully the show will be very romantic so ... bring a date! Shout out to your fans in Bali & Jakarta! Hello to all you brilliant Balinese and Jakartans in body or spirit. I hope to see you on Feb 12th in Kuta, and Feb 14th in Jakarta. I have been waiting to play here for ten years so see you soon!
Good Question. Possibly not ... so I guess things happen at the time they are supposed to. Especially if you keep trying to do good work for the right reasons. Which I don't always manage to do but, you know, I try ... A musical based on the psychological thriller ‘American Psycho’; can you give us a little insight on the project? In my opinion ‘American Psycho’ was a pretty sadistic movie, how is all that blood and guts going to be portrayed on stage with music in it to boot? Well, all that blood and guts is the fun of it, right?! All jokes aside, it took me a minute to decide to do this project, but when I re-read the book I thought it could

Iron Maiden Pantai Carnival, Ancol Thu 17 Feb | 9PM Sound Like Metal Hail From Leyton, UK
Have Been Iron Maiden are considered an international phenomenon in the Rock and Metal world, with career sales of over 85 million albums sold and 30 years at the forefront of Metal - not to mention a major influence on many of today’s successful bands who have followed in their footsteps. From the air-raid siren vocals of Bruce Dickinson, to the soaring melodies of the “three Amigo” guitarists Dave Murray, Janick Gers and Adrian Smith, all forged into one dynamic powerhouse by the thunderous rhythm section of Steve Harris on bass and Nicko McBrain on drums, it’s no wonder the band has existed for so long. With an accolade of international awards the band was awarded the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement in 2002 and was also inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk of Fame on Sunset Boulevard, LA during their US tour in 2005. The band has played over 2000 live shows during their long career. are Now Commencing in Moscow on the 11th of February, Iron Maiden will play 29 shows and visit 26 cities in thirteen countries across five continents. Ed Force One (the bands iconic 757 private airliner) will land in Jakarta on the 17th of February to deliver the band to perform at Pantai Carnaval, Ancol. Aside from the fact that they are all pianists, these 11 young and very talented musicians are also piano students who have been studying under the guidance of Dr. Johannes Sebastian Nugroho. For the very first time together in one recital, they are planning to conquer the great etudes of Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy and many more in a recital that is planned for February 13th at Goethe Haus Institute. Over the years, Indonesia has been producing more and more amazing young and talented pianists. The 11 pianists featured in this upcoming recital have received some intensive learning from renowned award winner Dr. Johannes S. Nugroho. A member of Pelita Harapan University faculty members, Dr. Johannes S. Nugroho represented Indonesia in the 1991 Hong Kong International Performing Arts Festival and has actively performed in numerous major cities both in Indonesia and the USA as a solo piano recitalist, a piano soloist with orchestra, a chamber musician and a piano collaborator. In 2005 he achieved a doctorate in music from Indiana University, USA; and is currently starting his composing career. Among many of his beautiful compositions, work such as ‘Kelana Jiwa’ (searching soul) for soprano and piano was premiered at the UNICEF gala concert in Baltimore, USA and his choral work ‘Rhapsodi Tanah Sunda’ (Sundanese rhapsody) was premiered at the Indonesian Coffee Hour in Bloomington, USA. For this coming recital, we will also have the opportunity to enjoy his latest composition for piano that he’s called “5 Etudes for Poetic Expression”. I have to say that it is quite interesting to find a recital that is focusing on etude compositions. An etude – French for study - is a considerably difficult instrumental musical composition that is designed to provide practice material for perfecting a particular technical skill. However, the tradition of writing etudes for piano somehow became popular in the early 19th Century. Even until now, etudes that were composed by Carl Czerny and Muzio Clementi are still in use as teaching material in many conservatories around the world. I just hope that they will play Chopin’s Etudes op. 10 or op. 25 as they are not only melodious to hear but also regarded as some of the finest etudes ever written; especially when it comes from 110 fingers of young and super talented Indonesian pianists. I bet it is going to be one of those proud moments of being Indonesian.

Domestic Groove, Celeb’s Chosen Seven:
Ayu
Laksmi Domestic Groove, Celeb’s Chosen Seven: Singer, Songwriter
What music are you into at the moment?
Original music/albums that have just been released by my good friends like Riwin, Oded, ChaCahyadi, Yoichi Ikeda and Gde Kurniawan. From pop to rock to jazz!
What was the first record you bought? Any interesting stories behind it?
A song name “Gunung Fujiyama” by Titik Sandhora, when I was 4 years old hahaha… That was my favourite song, I remember one time I cried like hell when I heard the song being sung by the neighbour’s child. I said to my grandma, “That is my song, nobody is allowed to sing it, will you ask her to stop singing it now...” Then when I hit my teenage era my attention became a bit different: I started listening to other kinds of music which was more classic/art rock.
What are your all-time favourite albums and artists? Why?
When I was still a teenager I really loved albums released by this label from Bandung called YESS. I collected many of their releases. With my friends at school, we went hunting and started collecting almost anything they published. “Owner of a Lonely Heart”, was my favourite song. Later on I was crazy for whatever Sting made (Wow, with this guy, to be honest, I’m dying in love with him). Other artists like Rush, Aerosmith, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Tania Maria, Annie Lennox, they’ll always be my forever idols.

you
ever
None. I always try to appreciate every kind of music composed by someone somewhere in this universe - no matter how it is presented. As long as it does not steal other people’s creation.
Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? I still wanna be an artist and producer as well— but smarter with a good knowledge, graduated at the best music school. I wanna be richer and more established, managed by a professional management team, supported by many teams and crews, in order to be able to make my wildest dreams come true.
What song/album do you choose to start your weekend?
I’m not really fixated with weekends or weekdays he he… My mood guides me to be active that day or not. It does not matter if it is a weekend or not. I just know that when I’m driving I love to listen to the music of Sting, and my original songs from my own album Svara Semesta, for sure. When I’m working at home I prefer to be quiet, no sound at all. I listen to the music, not as a background but really listen to it.
And song/album you choose to end your weekend? Oh well, please see the answer above.

HONEY STEAK
‘Feel the different taste’ is their motto. This is a new and affordable place to enjoy steak that is sure to heighten your dining pleasure.

Honey Steak Jl. Pinang Emas I - F 10, Pondok Pinang (Pondok Indah), Jakarta Selatan Opens: 11am – 11 pm Phone: (021) 75912710 / (021) 93117437
I pass by this eatery almost everyday, coming to and from work, and although relatively new, I can see that Honey Steak has gained quite a sizeable following. The place is full of diners every night, so I decided to stop by one evening and give it a try. Just a stone’s throw away from Pondok Indah Mall, Honey Steak is a good, simple, no-frills place for steak. There is no AC here, just some ceiling fans to keep the air flowing. Red bricks dominate the interior, with some photos of the steaks hanging on the wall to whet your appetite. Don’t mind the fragrant smoke from the burning meat; this is really a full on barbeque experience! It even has free wi-fi - it seems even a simple place like this has to keep up with the times. Owned by Mr. H. Surya, Honey Steak opened in late September last year. It is always good to have a casual and reasonably priced place to enjoy good quality imported steak (memories of the old Abuba restaurant came rushing back). Good on you, Mr. Surya! And so to the food. Most of the meat comes from New Zealand, with the sirloin priced close to Rp44K and the tenderloin is a little higher
at Rp64K, but the most requested items on the menu are the rib-eye (Rp48.8K) and iga bakar or barbecued ribs (Rp42.8K). The lamb chop (Rp54.8K) is also growing in popularity among their customers. The steaks are tender and cooked to perfection. I got to try a couple of their favourites, and all I can say is that the chefs really know their way around a griddle. The one thing that stands out about the food is that they marinate their meat in honey (hence the name) - the sweet sensation a welcome surprise. There are two choices of homemade sauce on the side; mushroom and black pepper, complimented with a side of fries and mixed veggies. Fish lovers will not feel left out as there is also grilled salmon (Rp39.8k) and prime red snapper (Rp42.8) on the menu. Also give the fish & chips a try, priced at Rp27.8K, this is also slowly rising through the ranks to be one of the favourites as well. So make a plan to stop by Honey Steak soon. Just let your hair down, bring your happy vibes and your hungry stomach, and enjoy great bang for your buck on quality barbequed steaks. SWEET! [Budi Iskandar] 057 beatmag.com

TALIWANG
BERSAUDARA
Lombok Restaurant Looking to spice up your dining experience? A visit to this Lombokian restaurant will definitely leave you burning for more! In a good way.
I did not know that my friend Putri and I shared a common love for Ayam Taliwang. She actually wrote on her Twitter account recently, saying that she’s been craving it for quite some time. So I asked her, and we decided that it was time to visit Taliwang Bersaudara. This is one of the most popular Lombok restaurants in Jakarta. Taliwang Bersaudara started out more than 20 years ago in Cakranegara, Lombok. They opened up their first branch outside Lombok in Bali, and then made their way up to Jakarta with the opening of their restaurant in the Tebet area. Putri and I visited their Panglima Polim branch, near Blok M which was actually a converted house. A bathtub is still present in their rest room! The dÊcor is basic, but with typical Lombok-style handicrafts placed here and there. As soon as you walk in the door, the wonderful aroma of spices welcomes you. Lombok food is well-known for its spiciness. beatmag.com 058
Taliwang Bersaudara Lombok Restaurant Jl. Panglima Polim IV no. 125 Jakarta Selatan Ph: (021) 725 2863 Jl. Tebet Raya no. 10A Tebet, Jakarta Selatan Ph: (021) 829 8592 Also located in Bandung and Bali
But don’t let it deter you. It is one of the most flavourful cuisines in the country! The most popular dishes from Lombok can be found here. The ayam bakar Taliwang (Rp30K) is their best seller. This dish is made of a whole grilled young chicken, marinated with various spices and topped with a special spicy chili sauce. You can have it mild or spicy, but beware; even the mild one has a good kick to it! Also note that the young chicken used is quite small. Even Putri could finish the whole portion by herself! Another well-known Lombok dish is the pelecing kangkung (Rp11K). The kangkung (water spinach) is cooked along with bean sprouts, topped with some fried peanuts, and smothered generously with a special sambal terasi. Along with the ayam bakar Taliwang, my personal favourite is the beberuk terong (Rp11K) where a green eggplant is finely sliced and doused in a tasty tomato-based sambal. It is indeed very appetizing! It actually tastes like Mexican-style salsa, but with some instantly recognizable Indonesian spiciness. Other notable dishes here are the sate pusut and
sate pencok (both Rp15K). The former is made with spice-marinated beef fillet, skewered onto a bamboo stick (like Balinese-style sate lilit), while the latter is made with cow skin, barbequed and smothered with hot chili sauce. The owner of Taliwang Bersaudara, Mrs. Baiq Hartini, does a wonderful job of keeping the prices very affordable. It is as though inflation and the recent hike in the price of chilies never happened, so kudos to her! Putri and I left the restaurant feeling full and satisfied. When we tweeted our outing along with some photos, we got quite a number of responses from our ‘followers’; all saying good things about the restaurant and the food, plus some hungry tweeters already planning on visiting the simple yet wonderful eatery. So, why don’t you add some spice to your dining experience and try the best dishes Lombok has to offer at Taliwang Bersaudara! You’ll get a good kick out of it!

Crazy Little Thing Called Love Romance, Comedy. Directors: Puttipong Pormsaka Na-Sakonnakorn and Wasin Pokpong. Cast: Mario Maurer, Pimchanok Lerwisetpibol, Sudarat Budtporm , Acharanat Ariyaritwiko. As we approach Valentine’s Day, this Thai rom-com movie will be just perfect to build your mood with its simple feel-good story. The movie is all about the high school puppy love of Nam, an average-Jane kind of girl who has a huge crush on Chon (Mario Maurer), the school heartthrob. It’s not an easy task for Nam to compete with the other girls, who are more beautiful and more talented, just to catch the attention of prince charming Chon. The plot of the movie may be simple, but audiences, especially girls, are sure to get swept away by it. Like other typical rom-com movies, the usual roller-coaster emotional ride from laughter to tears should appeal to all, regardless of age. This one is just everyone’s kind of story!
Black Swan Thriller, Drama. Director: Darren Aronofsky. Writers: Mark Heyman and Andres Heinz. Cast: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder.
Heard much of the critically-acclaimed, award-winning, Oscar-nomination hype lately? It has even been tipped by some to be “the most artistic horror movie ever”. In the brilliant work of director Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream), Black Swan will take you into a gripping psychological thriller story about a terrifying journey of a ballerina, Nina (Natalie Portman, Closer) in her competitive intrigue and friendship with rival, Lily (Mila Kunis, Forgetting Sarah Marshall). As the story unfolds, her role as the duplicitous swan princess turns out to be a part for which she becomes obsessively and frighteningly perfect. Imagine Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake coming to haunt you in some twisted nightmare.
The Rite Horror, Mystery. Director: Mikael Håfström. Writer: Michael Petroni Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Collin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Trader). Pakai kalung salibmu ketika hendak menonton The Rite, sekedar buat jaga-jaga saja! Had enough seeing Anthony Hopkins as psychopath Dr. Hannibal Lecter? Good, because this time he plays a legendary exorcist priest in Vatican. You don’t have to lift up your expectations that much for this kind of exorcism-horror film, it will (again) try to creep and haunt you with its demonic atmospheric and overt horror. The story revolves around how a skeptical student in his apprenticeship of learning exorcism has his beliefs tested with supernatural phenomenons that science can’t explain or control. Even if you don’t believe in such demons or devils, it might be a good idea to bring a bible into the cinema anyway!

CHEONGSAMs Have Never Been This
Prett y Is there any more example of a breathtaking masterpiece than the infamous cheongsam? Just like our nation’s beloved kebaya, the cheongsam has developed far beyond its humble beginnings into more creative styles and designs. In conjunction with Hotel Mulia’s appreciation party and the approaching Chinese New Year, fashion shows were held showcasing various cheongsams including those by Sebastian Gunawan. Sebastian Gunawan himself is a designer of Chinese descent, having successfully transformed basic cheongsams into many styles, details and shapes in a collection titled ‘Chinois Express’. According to Seba (the designer’s nickname), the title was derived from the word ‘chinois’ that denotes Chinese culture and influence. Classic shape cheongsams with modern details, modern shapes with basic chinois fabrics, and even the 50’s elegant silhouette cheongsams were among the collection on display. Body Care 101 I
t’s not just our faces that need regular TLC, it’s just as important to take care of the skin on our bodies. Things that you need to do to achieve healthy looking skin are basically exfoliate and moisturise, so read on as Sarah Damanik, the Marketing Manager of L’occitane, gives us some basic information on body skin care. The root of unhealthy skin is caused by the replacement of dead skin and uneven skin that accumulate together. This occurs when the skin cages are exposed to an external aggressor such as UV rays, pollution and cold air. As a result the skin becomes clogged and appears scaly. The advantage of exfoliating (scrubbing) your skin regularly is that the dead skin is removed quicker and more evenly. It will also cleanse the pores, so that the moisturizer used will be absorbed more easily as well. To make sure that your skin stays moisturised the whole day it is recommended to use a moisturiser twice a day in the morning and evening after you take a shower. Make sure that the ingredients and texture of the moisturizer is what your skin needs, because like your face, the skin on our bodies differs from person to person. Sarah advises that exfoliating and moisturising should be done when your skin is clean (after shower) and when the pores are clean so that the granules in your scrub do not work the dirt back into your skin. This will also make sure that your moisturiser is absorbed more efficiently. The texture of moisturiser for the body varies, for instance: 1. Body lotion: texture is somewhat liquid. 2. Body cream: thick textured. 3. Body oil: texture is very oily. 4. As stated above, moisturising ingredients also need to be tailored to the needs of the skin. For instance, people with very dry or dehydrated skin are encouraged to use a moisturiser like the L’Occitane range of Shea Butter. For dull skin there is a range of organic olive tree products that restore your skin’s glow while maintaining

moisture levels. For skin that has started to lose its elasticity there’s the almond firming milk, and for those who do not have a specific concern, there is a different range of moisturisers that also offers fragrances such as the rose body lotion, cherry blossom, green tea, etc. 5. Another skin concern that women usually experience is stretch marks. This problem often arises when the skin is not elastic enough and has stretched more than normal. Skin can stretch more than usual in times of pregnancy, aging, weight gain or extreme exposure to sunlight. 6. To prevent stretch marks, skin should remain as elastic as possible, which means that our skin needs to be moisturised regularly as mentioned above. If you already have stretch marks what you can do is get regular massages using products with a dry oily texture which have a very high humidity level and are easily absorbed by the skin. Sarah recommends the almond supple skin oil from L’Occitane. Sarah also recommends doing fragrance layering so that your body can smell fresh the whole day. Fragrance layering can be done by using products within the same range or flavour, by using soap, lotion and perfume (eau de toilette / perfume) so that the fragrance lasts longer. Until June 2011, World Class 2011 will hold three competitions in three classes of cocktail. I
ndonesia is known as a multiethnic country with diverse traditions, a rich heritage, and a multitude of traditional buildings. Today, modern Indonesian culture remains inseparable from the legacy of traditions. Using these facts as a reference point, an exhibition was prepared under the title of ‘1001 Doors: Reinterpreting Traditions’. As a part of Jakarta Contemporary, the exhibition took place between January 27th until February 6th at The Ciputra Marketing Gallery, Jalan Prof. Dr Satrio Kav. 11. ‘1001 Doors: Reinterpreting Traditions’ was designed to encompass the contemporary and the future, while also honouring age old traditions that gave rise to multidimensional imaginations of 101 artists, architects, designers and craft-artists who will, all in their own specific manner, show their contemporary response to traditional doors.
The Doors to Interpret the Tradition
Doors were chosen as the theme, because doors aptly indicate change, and today we are in the midst of an ever-changing world. ‘1001 Doors’ is naturally a metaphor for the multitudes of door styles handed down to us by the traditional communities in Indonesia. The physical forms of the traditional doors are inseparable from the local aesthetic values and the craftsmanship required to create them. Works by 101 makers of the symbolic and material cultures in a contemporary context re-interpret the meanings of doors, tracing the heritage and meaning of traditions, which have more or less shaped the Indonesian modernity of today. Their creations are expected to fascinate the art world, attract new audiences and give rise to the debates such as to what defines cultural memory, local elements in art, and the influences of tradition, modernization and globalization.

A total of 48 photographs were featured in the Unposed #0 exhibition, showcasing images by several young and aspiring photographers. Through their eyes (or lens), they are able to capture the images of urban life. Without the use of sophisticated lighting equipment, the photographers use whatever camera they have to simply go outside and take pictures. Despite its simplicity, street photography is a unique and imaginative style of photography. The interesting point of this exhibition is the variety of approaches the photographer takes. The appeal of the images comes from different angles of approach, combining composition and geometric shapes, humour and satire, psychosocial, minutiae, people’s expressions, urban surrealism and playful lightning. Each different approach reflects the photographer’s identity and interest. The aesthetic elements of the exhibition are different from that of professional photographers. Once captured by the lens, usual objects seen through everyday life appear in extra ordinary ways. These ordinary objects that are displayed remind us of how interesting and truly outstanding the environment that surrounds us truly is.

The Young and Their Restlessness of an Era
beatmag.com 078
A
fter six months of discussion and observation in an artist residency program at Pasar Seni Ancol, eight young artists from Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta presented works which aim to display their restlessness.
The eight aspiring artists were Luthfi Anwar, Michael Binuko, Muhammad Yusuf Siregar, Patriot Mukmin, Rizki Andina, Saroni, Sutrisno and Walid Syartowi Basmalah - each articulating the clash of individual values against social norms and other external factors within their works of art. The exhibition titled ‘Age of Restlessness’ highlights the area in which social matters and an IT-dominated world have reconstructed reality into a new personal space. Lutfi Anwar’s ‘Refreshing’ uses ceramics as his medium of choice to interprete daily objects from his life, and showcases an artwork depicting human escapism with the aid of the information superhighway. Sharing the same sense with Lutfi, Saroni captures the escapism of lower class individuals in a state of slumber. He is the only artist in the exhibition that uses statue as his medium. The art piece produced by Walid Syarthowi Basmallah titled “Refleksi Berita Hari ini” uses a different approach to remind viewers about the forgotten social problems of today. By using screen-prints on wood, he is able to flaunt the abstraction of social problems, with a contrasting background of a luxurious idyll printed on glass. Michael Binuko also presents a commentary on social matters in his artwork by using photographic negatives of several unaesthetic spots around Taman Impian Jaya Ancol to show the reversal in meaning of the literal translation of “Taman Impian” or dreamland. Patriot Mukmin’s observation of modern life is shown in his work titled ‘Narcissus in Modern Land’. By using a first person perspective of narcissism he presents the faces of people that have been plagued by the digital camera for personal reasons. One can tell an artist’s gender just by the theme of their artwork. It is safe to assume that artworks that revolve around sexuality are mainly realised by the second-class gender in our patriarchal society. As the only female artist in the exhibition, Rizki Andina uses ceramics, photographs, brass and needles to criticize the ideal values of the female body. She illustrates the parts of the body that have no sexual appeal, but unknowingly have a very close relation to sexuality. Hands, the foetus and the placenta are transformed into interesting ornamental elements of art. Overall, the ‘Age of Restlesness’ highlights contextual perspectives of a generation. It shows how restlessness can cause us to move forward and morph into a new frame of mind that can lead us to either better things or indeed the opposite.

You might not get that raise or promotion you were hoping for but the right person will, and you should feel confident that your turn is sure to come. People need you to tell them what to do, though you may want to help them figure out how to wean themselves off their dependence on authority figures. They will thank you for it later! This doesn’t have to be romantic, it could also be professional, and by teaming up with another person the sum total of your skills (and how you complement one another) could prove exceptionally lucky. It’s one of those rare times when you can take care of that mountain of chores all by yourself, so send everyone else off to do their thing while you do yours.
It’s a great time to move through work projects with great speed, clean the house or get in touch with that new person. You can have it all! Use this new insight to make plans for the near future. You’ll feel good getting out and doing something new. Fortunately, there are going to be opportunities to pursue more exciting possibilities too, once the routine stuff is out the way. Being steadfast at work and performing well will result in good recognition and rewards. The ingredients for success are hard-work, patience, determination and a contingency plan. If you ever get to work with design elements in your job, do some mockup drawings on your computer or play with computer graphics.

July 23 - August 22
Heavy emotional business comes out, and you need to make sure that you’re not just doing the same-old thing when it comes to taking care of baggage. In the professional sphere, a big change in a particular project or in the structure surrounding you gives rise to a certain anxiety. There’s nothing wrong with that conversation now and then, but if you feel you can’t get anything important done, talk to the right people. It’s one of those times that demands a break from your routine, even if you’ve got tasks that must be completed. This could be linked to work pressures or because you are finding looking for employment a stressful process. Though life isn’t exactly comfortable right now, you can still get a lot done.
Are you strongly attracted romantically to someone whom you know through your job? This might bother you a little, as you might be concerned about the protocol, but still, you won’t want to pass up what might be a beautiful relationship just because of a glitch. At work, you’ll be feeling quite serene. Your projects are progressing slowly but surely, everything seems to fall into place quite easily and relations with clients are flowing naturally. You’ll feel more confident if you know that you look your best. This is a good time to introduce yourself to prospective clients, colleagues, and romantic prospects alike. Now, you are back in familiar territory as issues concerning your relationships come to the fore.
Gemini May 21 - June 21 You’re not feeling totally comfortable with big activities, but that doesn’t mean you get to walk away from them. If you’re not sure that this is the right path for you, then you need to decline and see what comes along next. Occasional setbacks may occur, but you will be able to tackle the problems as and when they appear. It is not a good time to take action or to put plans into place - delays and obstacles may crop up - so it would be better to take a break or rest. Your professional and business interests will take second place to more pressing personal and emotional matters. Any work should be accomplished quickly, and you’ll be in the mood to continue the silly banter well into the wee hours.
Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Changes in the work front could make situations seem a bit overwhelming, but hang in there as the end results will be good. Being responsible and diplomatic where work matters are concerned will gain you respect and recognition. Opportunities will arise if you share your creative ideas with people who can bring new projects to your life. A project that excites you will preoccupy you and will probably upset a loved one who will want your undivided attention. The penny suddenly drops and you will realise that it is possible to manifest your own luck by fearlessly going after what you want. You will have the motivation and means you need to get started on your work projects and ideas.

Duty and responsibility come first at this time, but you should work out ways to create more leisure time in the future. You have every reason to believe an aspect of life is taking a turn for the better. While it has been a long time coming, there may be rich rewards, a new relationship or greater prestige. Someone may acknowledge your efforts, but it will be false praise compared to the tributes you truly deserve. As you make the transition between one situation and the next, happiness may be tinged with a touch of nostalgia. A creative project needs to be balanced with expertise; by boning up on your skills, what you produce is both beautiful and practical. There is a softness about you, but you’ll still have enough grit to get things done.
Mixed influences are both emotional and laid-back, and success lies in knowing when to speak out and when to listen carefully. You may offer unsolicited advice, lead by example or inspire others to try something new. You may begin a project without being able to predict the outcome but the challenge is your prime motivator. You will be thinking a lot about how to get things done in the most efficient way possible. Provided you do your homework, discuss plans with loved ones and look at the long-term implications, you will succeed. To reach the pinnacle of success, you must be prepared to roll with the punches and vary your plans or routine. Careful planning is about to reap rewards and support from someone with influence will be the icing on the cake.

Jan 21 - Feb 18
It’s an extremely slow time for everyone but you, so see if you can get folks to plod along behind you while you race ahead and get all the important work done. They can thank you later! At work, you need to keep a check on your impulsiveness throughout. You’re normally so willing to compromise, but now, you may find yourself becoming incredibly stubborn. Work and business are problematic right now, but you can make some progress if you go it alone (as much as possible). You are capable of much hard work, concentrating a great deal of energy and drive towards achieving goals and ambitions. Your urge to get up and go is quite strong now, and that could mean that you’re at odds with your boss, mate or someone else close to you.
Your great energy means that you can have a real effect on others, and you are sure to be more influential than you usually are. It’s one of those times when you can easily outlast the competition, so don’t worry about resting. This may see you following a course of action that you know someone isn’t going to like, but don’t be too put off. It indicates your trust in the future, even if you are asked to get into something that’s outside of your usual sphere of competency. Your great personal energy helps you make great progress on your own projects, and you can turn to others. It may be a token effort, but even that can have a profound effect. Your peers are sure to appreciate your work.
You will certainly capture the attention of your audience - just remember that there will be a fine line between fact and fiction. It may be smarter to examine all the pros and cons of your ambitious plans, as very little is likely to go as schedule. You’ll face a sudden rush of things to do, but if you take it one step at a time, you’ll ease stress and deal things effectively. If you are at loggerheads with others, there is still a long way to go before differences are reconciled. Expect battles to be hard-fought and won, or try to avoid competitive people and situations altogether. Your ability to achieve against the odds, bounce back from adversity and persevere will be your greatest strengths. You are being urged to take more responsibility.
Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 You will have to resolve specific work situations and will have to focus on what you want rather than seeking what you don’t want out of the situations. Make sure you are on top of details at work and as long as you have the answers, you will receive recognition and respect for work well done. This is the time you will find your natural balance and if you have been in the wrong element at work, things and situations will begin to shift in your favour. It will bring added confidence and a sense of hope for the future. This is the time to plan and pursue your goals. Know that you’re capable of creating what you want and make some changes in your life. Now is a good time to wrap your head around how it could all work in the long run.

Sackboy Computer Gear
The S3350 Ch@t 335 features WiFi, social network integration, a 2 megapixel cam, FM radio and 3.5mm headphone jack, but lacks 3G - a telltale sign that it’s aiming for the low end of the market. Like the Ch@t 322, it’s got a nifty optical trackpad, which is great for a phone you’ll undoubtedly be paying peanuts for, but it’s not going to make up for the fact that you can’t download stuff at breakneck speeds. C e l l u l a r World. Jl Teuku Umar no 60 (Denpasar) RP. 1,015,000
As we can see from the image, this is a unique Sackboy action figure that is available in two sizes, including 3 inch and 6 inch limited editions. Tip & Tilt Internet Radio Remember when radios were simple? Probably not. These days it’s all about the mind-boggling choice of Internet radio. But, as the Tip & Tilt Internet Radio exemplifies to perfection, simple is frequently brilliant. Just like regular Internet radios this funky rechargeable cube receives squillions of radio stations from around the world via your home Wi-Fi connection. The difference is there are no buttons to push, knobs to turn or screens to read. Simply switch between four preset stations by turning it over from side to side. To adjust volume tilt it forward or back; to mute lay it on its front. Idiot-proof? It makes pulling your pants down seem daunting. Available in pink, blue and green. A single charge ought to keep it going for up to 14 hours before it gets exhausted. £89.99. http://www.firebox.com/

This air purifier uses heated air to destroy airborne mold, bacteria, viruses, dust mites and pollen. Unlike commonly available ionic units, it does not produce harmfully elevated ozone levels. It also reduces existing indoor ozone, which the America Lung Association indicates can be a serious respiratory irritant and asthma trigger. With no filters to replace or clean, the compact cleaner pulls air into the internal chamber which is heated to 392° F to silently destroy mold, airborne bacteria, viruses, pet dander, and common household dust mites in a room up to 30’ x 18’. Despite its high internal heat level, the purifier will not change the room temperature. For the highest level of air purification, it is recommended for use 24-hours a day, every day, yet it draws less power than a 60-watt light bulb. $239.95 http://www.hammacher. com

Bali Named Top Destination in Asia Travel booking portal Wotif.com has revealed that Bali was the most popular Asian destination for its customers last year. Our little island saw more bookings than any other Asian destination, knocking Singapore off the top spot, which it has held for the last three years. In fact, Singapore fell two places with Hong Kong in second position, while the Thai hotspots of Bangkok and Phuket were in fourth and fifth place respectively. Wotif.com believes that traveller numbers to Bali are set to continue growing thanks to the continuing popularity of last year’s ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ film starring Julia Roberts. Other reasons for people coming to Bali include the culture, the people, the landscape and the affordable cost of living. Let’s not forget the beaches, the lifestyle and the nightlife can also be quite infectious. A Hollywood movie can help of course but it’s only part of the story. [From TBD www.beatmag.com]

Riding with Rusty Shackleford
The Great Divide This week Rusty takes a quick, lighthearted look at the differences between the nightlife of Kuta and Seminyak.
Fine dining and fast food, liberals and conservatives, rebels and loyalists, east and west; these are just a few things that categorically contradict one another but cohabitate their respective realms. If you’ve sampled a fair amount of the Bali nightlife, you’ll notice another great schism that divides pretty much the entire Bali party scene; Kuta and Seminyak. To be completely fair, there are nightclubs and venues outside the ‘Kutayak area’, but these are mere peripheries orbiting the two juggernaut party scenes on the island. You can say they’re much like third world countries during the cold war, aligned with the concepts and philosophies of either Seminyak or Kuta. So with a fair bit of stereotyping and just a tiny pinch of exaggeration, I present to you a house divided in concept, class, age, music, socio-economical stratification and just about everything else to do with having a good time.

Seminyak
Kuta To some, it’s a carefree good time where tourists, travelers and locals can mingle and have an absolutely unpretentious night of cliché dance moves, rock solid hits and pure revelry. To others, it’s a mess. Bintang singlet wearing hooligans go out, get drunk, and fight in between trying to hook up with even drunker blonde girls or the ladies of the night that patrol the area. What makes Kuta great is both statements are pretty much true. A night out in Kuta often arrives at one of the above conclusions, and, depending on the night, a person might come up with an entirely different idea of whether or not Kuta was good. So what is it that might change the same person’s judgment of what is pretty much constant in terms of crowd, music, and atmosphere? The answer is really quite simple, if you answered “a total lack of sobriety alters one’s perceptions”, I’d have to agree with you. Kuta is a place to get absolutely smashed, pure and simple. If you haven’t achieved the blood alcohol content of a sailor who’s recently been released from jail, you’re essentially a bystander in the most awesome train wreck of intoxication this island has to offer. If you’d rather not be part of a hot, illusion shaker inspired orgy of sweat and grime, then you’d best skip the clubs of Kuta and take your classy/snobby self to…
Kuta’s Northern neighbour couldn’t be more different in terms of how people under the influence choose to socialize. A great many people may say that Seminyak is a for the more savvy and sophisticated, a place you can enjoy your fellow revelers in a civilized environment where tasteful music, complex cocktails and cutting edge design intersect in luxurious bliss. Detractors believe it’s a pretentious hub of self-aggrandizing snobbery that revels in overpriced drinks that only serve to further one’s perception of status in between tapping away on the ever-present Blackberry. Or they’re simply bogan tourists who have just wandered in by mistake. Seminyak, being quite a bit more sophisticated, has a rather more complex solution to optimizing your good time. Getting completely sloshed is not viewed in quite the same way as it is in Kuta but is still part of the puzzle. Although unscientifically tested, my hypothesis for having a really amazing time in Seminyak is quite simply to have lots and lots of money (or hang out with someone who does). Spend a ton of it on drinks for your posse, then let the real party begin back at a very high priced villa somewhere in Canggu. So there you have it. After reading this, you are now ready to leave the relative safety of sunlit hours and venture into the dark world of the Bali club scene and hopefully be somewhat successful. Whatever your motivations are, I hope you prevail whilst faithfully adhering to this paradigm I have set forth. Next issue, I shall present my theories on finding a suitable mate.

RUMOURS
One of the original eateries that gave Jl. Laksmana its more gastronomically inclined alias, the new Rumours gets the once over from long time aficionado Dan Ascroft.
S
eminyak institution Rumours has been keeping many a diner happy over the years with a stirling reputation for great steaks, tasty pasta, and sensible prices. I remember many years ago stumbling across the place with a couple of friends on an early trip to Bali. The first thing that hit me was just how busy it was… Every table full, waiters efficiently buzzing around, three deep at the central bar and even a queue out the door. Over the years I have watched plenty of restaurants come and go, but the Rumours buzz has never subsided, and with its recent facelift the restaurant has continued to go from strength to strength.
beatmag.com 088
Predictably the place is heaving as I arrive just after 8 on a drizzly Friday evening – the miserable weather proving no obstacle for the scores of diners engrossed in conversation. It’s actually the first time I have visited since the renovation 6 months previously, and I’m happy to see that none of the atmosphere has been lost as a result. Everything has been smartened up a touch, but it doesn’t feel overdone, and the vibe is still a relaxed and casual one. I’m also pleased to see that the menu hasn’t undergone any major overhauls, with the old favourites having been simply tweaked just a touch to bring them up to date, and a smattering of new additions to compliment the tried and tested fare.
From the ‘sweet dreams are made of this’ promo menu, I kick things off with the mahi mahi salad with tartar sauce on a bed of steamed long green beans (26k++). It’s light, tangy and wonderfully refreshing with a generous drizzle of lemon over the top. Although we’re already at the end of January, the Rumours Christmas Special menu has proven so popular over the festive period that it is still being featured. Still feeling suitably festive as a result of a recent trip to the UK, I decide to check out the pork knuckle with roast potatoes and gravy sauce (135k++). The huge joint is easily enough to share, although the tender succulent meat that just falls off the bone is reason enough to be glad that I’m dining
alone. Finishing up (and with little space left after the pork) I manage to squeeze in a lime crème brulee (29k++). Beneath the burnished sugar top lies a delicious light, zesty, creamy interior – difficult not to scoff down in one go. It seems that the Rumours buzz is still very much alive and kicking, and I for one am glad that after all this time, this Seminyak stalwart remains very much at the forefront of Bali’s dining scene. Long may it last! Dan Ashcroft. Rumours, Jl. Laksmana. Tel 738 720. 089 beatmag.com
