What’s up with this weather lately? It’s like the rain refuses to keep the streets dry even for a minute. The forecasters predicted the rains would end when Chinese New Year passed, but I guess someone forgot to tell the rain about that. Well whatever the weather is like of late, Jakarta continues to be invaded by great international acts from all over the world. Jakarta’s entertainment scene world seems to have returned to its high point like it was back in the late 90’s, what with concerts popping up almost every single week, it’s amazing how the crowds just keep getting bigger with every event. One event currently on everyone’s lips (apart from Iron Maiden) is the return of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival. This year is said to be bigger than before, we’ll just have to wait to see if that’s true. If you want to know what else is headed to Jakarta, check out our What’s On and Here Now sections for the latest line up of events for the next fortnight.

Beethoven

Melodies By Erza S.T.

Ludwig Van Beethoven might well be one of the most influential characters in the world of western classical music between the Classical and Romantic eras. His great compositions from beautiful piano pieces such as ‘Fur Elise’ and ‘Moonlight Sonata’ to the sensational ‘Symphony No. 9’ that he composed despite becoming completely deaf has made Beethoven as an everlasting source of inspiration to the world.

Beethoven Night 2

27 February 2011 starting from 7.30pm onwards.

his nine symphonies are still performed by many orchestras around the world. His sonatas, piano concertos, song cycles, Missa Solemnis and even his famous opera ‘Fidelio’ are still a favourite program of many musicians to choose when they are performing for a recital or concert these days. The same motivation seems to also influence Dr. Stephen Tong, the conductor of Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, who is going to perform ‘Beethoven Night 2’ on this upcoming February 27th. The resident orchestra at Aula Simfonia Jakarta had planned to perform Beethoven’s Symphony no.1 and 4 for this concert. However, they have also picked Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 8 to perform featuring soloist Dr. Tomislav Dimov on violin and our senior great pianist Adelaide Simbolon. This sonata in G major is characteristic of a period between early and middle Beethoven in its solid sonata structure, that just begins to get adventurous in syncopation with some extraordinary offbeat sforzandi. The Macedonian violinist Dr. Tomislav Dimov has won several prestigious international awards, and has been chosen to play the violin solo on this great piece. Throughout the year, Dr. Tomislav Dimov is a member of many great orchestras from around the world, where he also takes the role of conductor and artistic director from time to time. We are quite fortunate to have him in Jakarta full time now since 2009 as he has become the Head of the String Department and teacher of violin. Also, the Head of the Orchestra Department, Artistic Director and Conductor, and Head of the International and Domestic Relations for Pelita Harapan University Conservatory of Music.

However, Dr. Dimov is not alone. Our senior great pianist Adelaide Simbolon will accompany him in performing this sonata. For many years, Adelaide (known as Ade) has been performing around Indonesia and even overseas representing Indonesia through music. Though her piano lessons started in Jakarta, she graduated from Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in the USA. Back in Indonesia, Ade has shown us her versatility and poise over many performances from simple piano recitals to avant-garde performing arts and even opera performances. It would be a great opportunity to see her performing with Dr. Dimov on one of Beethoven’s most melodious sonatas. From all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies, no. 3 and no. 9 are the most commonly performed in concerts. It is very interesting to have the experience on enjoying Beethoven’s first symphony on this coming concert. The symphony is clearly indebted to Beethoven’s predecessors, particularly his teacher Haydn, but nonetheless has characteristics that clearly mark it as Beethoven’s work, notably the frequent use of sforzandi and the prominent use of wind instruments. As for Symphony no. 4, it is actually a work that was commissioned by Count Franz von Oppersdorff who offered a great amount of money for Beethoven to compose this symphony after listening to his Symphony no. 2 in D major. Perhaps this short article is not enough to unravel Beethoven greatness, but then again Beethoven greatness is not something that you can read. You have to see the performance and let his music go under your skin and continue on to your mind in order to have a real experience. It is magical!

Menolak Mati, Menohok dengan Warlock

A

khirnya, setelah hampir lelah menunggu, Jeruji kembali menderu.

After six years without releasing an album, the hardcore veterans Jeruji are finally back with their newest creation, ‘Warlock’. Consisting of 13 songs, this Bandung outfit is still as heavy as ever: aggressive, in your face, anti war, and strongly against injustice. In this latest work, Themfuck (vocal, mastermind), is supported by Sani (drums), Aleandre (guitar) and Pengex (bass). The addition of Aleandre (also a member of ‘Full Of Hate’ and ‘Pengex’ and still official personnel of ‘Take A Stand’) makes Jeruji even more solid and colourful, with a more New York/old school hardcore feel. If you are into heavy protest music, this charismatic and very respected band from Bandung will be right up your street. Stay connected with them and join their Facebook page (search: Jeruji), or simply turn on your radio.

Gowes Is The Thing! As you all may know, our lovely town of Jakarta is getting more and more crowded, and the streets are jamming up more and more every year. Hours spent in the car are just a waste of time, energy, and let’s not forget, a waste of money. To top all of that, the result is more mall visits just to kill time while you wait for a better traffic flow home, causing your wallet to empty even faster as you splash out things you probably don’t really need. Bike 2 Work (B2W) was actually founded back in August 2004 by the Mountain Bike community, starting with just 150 cyclists that felt the need to upgrade their quality of life both physically and mentally. Recently, more and more people have been seeing the potential fun of this healthy and cheap alternative mode of transport. B2W membership currently stands at 5034 people from all backgrounds and professions. They are not just everyday workers pedaling their way to the office; housewives, college and school students are also celebrating this fun way to get around.

Members are given a Bicycle Privilege Card that includes accident insurance and also discounts at certain bicycle shops, cafes, restaurants, and hotels. In the future, B2W is expecting the support of the Indonesian government by providing facilities such as parking areas, pit stops and bicycle routes to accommodate Jakarta’s cyclists. Right now there are plenty of car-free days, so currently without special routes bicycles can still be ridden conveniently. With the ever-increasing number of people signing up for B2W and their various bicycle-related events, new acquaintances and networks are being forged every day. What could be more perfect than spending the day with friends and family doing something fun and achieving a new state of wellbeing, but without burning a hole in your pocket? So why not sign up now and do your bit to make Jakarta a more green and traffic-free place! www.b2w-indonesia.or.id

B.O.B The Adventures Of Bobby Ray After a couple of EPs and mixtapes, Bobby Ray has finally raised the bar higher, thanks to his powerful vocals that he’s maintained during his long run. Now his ‘no genre’ style has led to more international recognition, with loads of support from today’s big names such Bruno Mars, Hailey Williams (Paramore), Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Lupe Fiasco, T.I. and Eminem. Definitely no wannabe, this guy writes, sings, raps and produces his own songs. No surprise then that he’s hotly tipped for further international success.

Boogiemen Nu Son To Shine Jakartan soul-urban soldiers Boogiemen are a good example of how Hiphop can be rich, groovy and soulful. It’s an urban feel that combines a grown man’s taste with wilder word play with a deep bass line. The flow is good on ‘Can’t Be Better Than This’, which could be described as like hearing 90’s rap, Maliq & D’essentials pop jazz and Erykah Badu combined. A few other songs on the album fit the bill for a boogie night or two with drinks in hand.

The development of the Jakarta club scene has rapidly evolved with the appearance of new places almost everywhere following the standard theory of “in with the new, out with the old. For some places attempting to maintain their existence amongst the tight competition, slight additions and even total renovations can be necessary so as to keep their regulars coming back. Here is a little rundown on some of the latest clubs and those that have experienced a face lift, as well as the ones that have gone to the dogs. The Pub

Last year many were surprised to hear that a club as big as Centro closed its doors after New Year’s celebrations. Other clubs that sadly had to close also were Vertigo and X-Lounge. Nearing the end of last year, The Pub and Tabac which were both located in the hip area of Kemang stopped operating after the land they were on was scheduled to be used for a new project. Tabac has not announced if it will be reopening as of yet, but The Pub has officially announced their withdrawal from the nightlife scene.

If you have seen a French film titled Yamakasi, then you know what the fuss is all about with Parkour. For those of you that haven’t, Parkour originally from France - is an activity involving swift movements using the basic principals of the human body. It’s amazing to see Parkour practitioners that are running, jumping, climbing, rolling, vaulting, swinging and also wall scaling around town. The objective is to be healthy in the mind and the body by overcoming the obstacles around us such as trees, walls, and rocks, but still in a legal manner. Basic movements in Parkour can be creatively combined into a new one in a free but orderly way. Parkour practitioners usually have a similar mind set to each other, so there’s rarely competition involved. On the contrary, it actually brings people together and helps people to gain a modest manner of thinking, not to mention better physical endurance.

Everyone with a healthy body and a bit of determination and patience can join in and be a traceur (a term for a practitioner of Parkour) or a traceuse (a female traceur) and experience the sport that is also a form of art. There’s almost no preparation needed - just wear comfortable clothes and a decent pair of running shoes and you’re ready to go! Also, a training location could be almost anywhere; this sport allows you to practice all by yourself wherever you are at the time. The community Parkour Jakarta have training sessions at various times, but newcomers can come to practice on a weekly basis every Sunday from 9am to 12pm at the Taman Kridaloka at Senayan for free! For further information, go to their website at www.parkourjakarta.posterous.com.

Food

Great Indonesian Cuisine Let’s try some Indonesian cuisine, famous for its generous amount of spices. And for you locals, let us go back to our roots and dine on our ancestor’s signature dishes.

1. Sajian Sunda Sambara This Sundanese specialty restaurant has two locations at Jalan Wolter Monginsidi and Jalan Cipete Raya. I went to the latter. The place—unlike other Sundanese eateries, has a modern take on the interior design, but still with a touch of ethnic Sundanese here and there - including the eating utensils. The food is incredibly appetizing, and is served in a classic buffet style. There is no question that the taste of it lives up to expectations. They offer traditional kinds of tasty food such as fish and chicken (fried and roasted), rice dishes, a variety of sambals, and many others. With the melodies of a kecapi suling (Sundanese music instrument), it really feels like you are outside in a rice field enjoying nature while eating. Happily, you will also leave with a full belly and a good taste in your mouth. Location : Jalan Cipete Raya No. 14, Jakarta. Tel: (021) 982 66357 / 769 1427 Operating hours : Every day from 10am to 10pm.

2. Bebek Goreng H. Slamet

3. Beautika

This is one tasty duck! There are s e v e r a l branches of this restaurant originally from Kartosuro spread around in Jakarta, but I can say the Cirendeu branch is one of the best. The place is quite spacious with many tables, and also rather secluded huts for a more private feel. The menu is not too varied, but other than the famous fried duck itself, there are some duck giblets and cakar bebek (duck’s feet) that is not very easy on the eyes, but is certainly scrumptious, so maybe you should try it with your eyes closed. If you’re not the daring type, just order the fried duck. With a dip of the famous sambal korek, your face will soon begin to redden and the standard sambal sweats will kick in. I can guarantee that. Location : Jalan Lebak Bulus PDK (Cirendeu), Jakarta Selatan Tel: (021) 758 16677 Operating hours : Everyday from 11am to 9pm.

Starting off as a beauty salon that also served Manadonese snacks such as bubur Manado, nasi kuning, mie cakalang, pisang goreng, gohu, and es kacang, Beautika emerges now solely as a Manadonese restaurant. There are many more dishes, all with recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Located at Jalan Hang Lekir near the Moestopo University, the authentic restaurant is rather crowded, but is worth the bustle for the variety of hot and spicy dishes. Go mad with the famous sambal Roa, the cakalang (a type of fish also known as the Skipjack fish), tude (another type of fish), corn fritters, and many other selections of hunger-busting food. Just talking about it is making me drool! Location : Jalan Hang Lekir No. 1 Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta Selatan Tel: (021) 722 6683 Operating hours : Monday – Saturday from 8am to 9pm. Sundays / public holidays from 8am to 8pm.

MALAY VILLAGE Y

ou could say that hawker food is something almost every Malay grows up with. And there’s always something familiar about Malaysian food for the Indonesian tongue. There are a lot of cross-influences between the two nations, their people, and of course, their cuisines. Add some Chinese and Indian flavours, and you have some of Asia’s most delectable dishes. A friend and I recently visited Malay Village Restaurant, at Cilandak Town Square (CITOS) in the South of Jakarta. Malay Village presents conventional Malaysian food in a contemporary

From under a shady tree on a street corner to a modern lifestyle. A journey of taste to our closest neighbouring country, Malay Village brings the best of Malaysian hawker food to Jakarta. setting, without losing its unique touch. The interior is modern and cozy, but some traditional touches here and there add something nice to the overall ambiance. There are traditional Malaysian kites, along with some vintage photos hanging on the wall. Old-school doors and glass mosaics dominate one side of the restaurant, while some kitchen ornaments dominate another. The upsidedown umbrellas on the ceiling are also a nice touch. It was quite a late lunch for us, so feeling rather hungry, we dug directly into the menu and ordered

Food some main courses. We decided on the Kerabu tofu telor, - deep fried tofu with spicy sweet sauce topped with egg floss and vegetables (28k). It kind of reminded us of East Java’s version of tahu telor, but this one is just as tasty! We also ordered the sweet and sour fish fillet (32.8k), which is another wonderfully delicious dish of crispy fish, generously doused with a tangy sweet and sour sauce. And for the greens, we ordered the buncis with minced chicken (20.8k) - stir fried French beans with spiced minced chicken. These dishes are some of the favourites at Malay Village, and they did not disappoint! Our wonderful Malaysian experience didn’t end there. Our drinks were very refreshing indeed. I went for the Ambula (kedondong fruit) juice, while my friend opted for the fresh cucumber with calamansi juice. Both drinks are priced at 16k. These drinks are excellent accompaniments to the mildly spicy dishes we ordered. Highly recommended.

For dessert, we decided on some Penang mango ice (19k). It was just a simple blend of diced mangoes, some nata de coco, jelly, and topped with a scoop ice cream, all on a bed of crushed ice, but that way a perfectly cool and comforting way to end our lunch. There are still a lot of delicacies at Malay Village to choose from, but we will leave that for another time soon. Maybe we will see you there! I haven’t seen my friend Eno for a long time. She’s a busy professional singer who is slowly but surely getting more and more recognition on Jakarta’s music scene. I am so happy for her. But I was happier that I finally got the chance to meet up with her, especially with her crazy schedule. We decided to meet at Pejaten Village mall, not too far from where she lives. After a bit of looking around, we chose to stop at Roppan. From the look of it, it seemed like a cozy and fun place to just chill and hang out. The name Roppan is short for Roppongi-Pan. Roppongi is a well-known hill in Japan, and Pan means bread in Japanese. We liked the look of the restaurant, so we decided to give it a try. Wood dominates the interior, which gives a warm touch. There are also some quirky paintings and big photos of the food which scream fun and casual. I guess you can say that this restaurant falls into the mod-Jap category. Eno and I started with the wakame salad (16k). The green vegetables are accented by some dried anchovies, which give it a unique taste. The sweet tangy dressing is very refreshing (don’t you just hate it when most of the salads in restaurants here come with thousand island dressing?) Eno also ordered the hearty miso soup (9k), and our conversation began to flow quite nicely.

Feeling hungry, I then ordered the minchi katsu bento (29k), which is a delectable rice-box combo of salad, tempura, and deep fried minced meat. My bento also came with miso soup - a great deal if I may say so! There is always room for dessert. The innovative toasts at Roppan looked pretty yummy, so we decided on the matcha honey toast (27k); a wonderful creation of green tea ice cream and some red beans, on a bed of honey toast bread. Sweet! It was good to see Eno again. And after exchanging stories (well, it was more about her stories about the inner working of Jakarta’s music world, and of course some juicy up-todate celebrity gossip), we parted ways again. But before that, we lifted our glasses of Roppan’s signature fruit-flavoured beers (35k). Eno chose the strawberry beer, while I opted for the peach brew. It was interesting, but flavoursome nonetheless. Here’s a toast to happiness! Roppan is a solid addition to Jakarta’s Japanese dining scene. There is plenty to choose from for everyone. Maybe next time we’ll try their udon, crispy sushi, or even their appetizing shakes. A second trip is in order! [Budi Iskandar]

Find Out Your Identity, Aspiration, and Rank!

Johan Tandoko, the TBJ film critic.

Ever wonder about who you are or who you want to be? These following three characters also have the same identity-crisis issue you might say. Have the guts to solve the mystery, do an heroic act to be acknowledged, and face the destiny of your number. Find the answers to your identity here at www.blitzmegaplex.com!

Unknown Action, Mystery. Director: Jaume Collet-Sera. Writer: Oliver Butcher. Cast: Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, January Jones, Aidan Quinn. Film Unknown ini sebenarnya diadaptasi dari sebuah novel misteri berjudul ”Out of My Head”. Kehadiran aktris pendatang cantik January Jones (The Boat That Rocked) juga akan menambah ketertarikan sendiri. Adapted from a mystery novel titled ‘Out of My Head’, Unknown is directed by acclaimed newcomer horror director, Jaume Collet-Sera (The Orphan), and stars Liam Neeson (Taken) as the main character. Reading those words should be more than enough reason to check out this action-packed mystery film. Neeson plays Dr. Martin Harris, who after a car accident in Berlin awakens from a coma only to discover that no one, not even his wife recognizes him. Things get more mysterious when another man claims his identity. Oh, and he is also being hunted by assassins. With the help of an unlikely ally, he sets out to prove who he is. Make sure your ID card is safe, just in case no one knows who you are after watching the movie!

Rango Animation, Adventure. Director: Gore Verbinski. Writer: John Logan. Cast: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant, Abigail Breslin, Bill Nighy.

Sutradara Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3) berkolaborasi dengan penulis John Logan (The Last Samurai, Sweeney Todd) untuk menggarap film animasi ini dengan aktor Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3) dan aktris Isla Fisher (Confession of the Shopaholic) sebagai pengisi suara. We’ve got pretty much every animal covered in animation movies already, from chickens to dragons. So how about a chameleon who’s having an identity crisis? Rango (voiced by Johnny Depp) is a pet chameleon that aspires to be a swaggering hero, who undertakes an adventure and finds himself in a western town plagued by bandits. He is then forced to literally play the role in order to protect himself. Another tick in the box for this animation film is that it comes from the acclaimed fantasy/adventure director, Gore Verbinsky (Pirates of the Caribbean). If you’ve been having your own identity issues lately, this chameleon might help you to figure it out!

I Am Number Four Sci-Fi, Action. Director: D.J. Caruso. Writers: Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron, Teresa Palmer. Based on the sci-fi novel of the same name by Pittacus Lore, director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) presents an action-packed thriller about an extraordinary teenage boy, John Smith (Alex Pettyfer), who is masking his true identity whilst moving from town to town with his guardian Henri (Timothy Olyphant, Live Free or Die Hard) to elude a deadly enemy seeking to destroy him and his special powers. Three like him have already been killed in other parts of the world, and he is next on the hit list. Sparked with teenage romantic drama, this film is definitely to be enjoyed in the same capacity as the popcorn buckets on your lap and pretty faces on the screen. Prepare your super powers too, who knows you might be next!

very woman needs a moment away from their glamorous looks and high heels sometimes. If you’re in search for sportswear that you can use for your sports activities or just for a casual look then Nike Sportswear’s spring collection is worth checking out. During their spring and summer 2011 exclusive preview held at the beginning of this month, Nike Sportswear held a conference with Anindita Saryuf (Fashion Editor of Elle Indonesia), and Max Suriaganda (co-founder of Footurama and White Board Journal) where they discussed the latest collection of Nike Sportswear and how it can be applied in your style. Nino Priambodo, the Marketing Manager of Nike Indonesia, said that “Nike Sportswear celebrated the great icon that originally was designed for the best athletes in the world. Its style remains true to the culture of sports, and portrays Nike’s identity that has been redesigned to catch up with modern urban lifestyles. Through original designs remains true to the original Nike form, the icon has been renewed with modern colours that are vibrant and full of details, with premium quality material and modern innovation that give birth to a collection that is unmatched.” In this spring and summer collection, Nike Sportswear renewed their N98 jacket that originally was designed for Brazil’s running team in 1998. However, colour blocking and neon colours have been incorporated into the design - a look that is going to be big this season according to Dita. This collection also features the V-Series sport shoe that reflects Nike’s long-standing concept of having no unnecessary accessories. Launched back in the 80s, this collection includes three different types of running shoes for different types of runners. Vectors is for those that need stability, Vengeance have extra cushioning to support extra speed whereas the combination of the two shoes is called Vortex. Works of Ton Aartsen Ton Aartsen is both a photographer and visual artist. By utilizing photographic and digital techniques and combining them with painting techniques he is able to create fascinating works of art. Photos are hand coloured by him, processed with Photoshop or completed by ways of rubber printing. Ton Aartsen has chosen the landscapes of the northern Netherlands as his main object. The reason for this is his curiosity as well as concern for how this landscape will look in 100 years time. February 23rd – March 18th, 2011 Erasmus Huis Jl. HR Rasuna Said Kav. Everything

but Canvas T

oo long has the use of canvas dominated the art world. So much so, that a group of artists have undertaken a solemn vow to oppose this matter.

In ‘Medium X: The Curious Case of Medium’ exhibition, the Pokja Jambu Batu community have proved that they are artists who have been rehabilitated from canvas addiction. The result could be seen at the Japan Foundation between 27th January and the 11th February, where the hall was filled with works of art using unusual mediums such as glass, tyres, plywood, resin and even kites. Arif Hidayat’s ‘Life On Wheels’ implemented his stencil techniques upon old tyres and glass. He also mocked the infamous criminal Gayus Tambunan, camouflaged within one of his paintings titled ‘Learn More Tricks, Catch-proof’. Other artists presented experimental artworks combining various mediums: Endro Supriyanto used oil painting on resin for his work titled ‘Shining’. Deri Pratama’s ‘Juda’s My Brain Spills’ used acrylic and spray paint on top of a plate of steel. Pen drawings and aquarelle combinations were a feature of Ariwowon’s ‘Funny Heart’, while Nurify simply used clay in her ‘Circus Life’ creation. Irfan S attempted to explore further by not just sketching on plywood with a pencil, but also creating 10 centimeters of machined embroidery on a piece of paper that says ‘Keep Going’. Irwan and Athonk also created another form of paper abuse by using simple pen drawings to formulate a simple painting called ‘Nature Repair’. The ability to explore the artistic world outside the canvas has given the Pokja Jambu Batu community the skills to create different art pieces never before seen. This exhibition may just be the start of something special especially considering that there are more things in daily life which have yet to be explored.

The Streets Are Their Battleground

In

response to the sectarian conflicts that have happened in several regions lately, Sunday Streetart has initiated a nationwide campaign called ‘Sunday, 13th’. This is a call to the country to respect differences and stay free. In this event, many Indonesian street artists (mostly anonymous) simultaneously interpreted their artistic work from a single message ‘Berbeda dan Merdeka 100%’ (different and 100% freedom) on the streets of Jakarta and other cities. From murals, graffiti, wall tagging, posters, stickers, stencils, to installations made from pieces of old newspaper the event taken up the battle cry for democracy and pluralism. Most of the artworks have been well documented on http://indonesiastreetartmovement.tumblr. com. Some of the reported artists are Isrol Medialegal, Gooodit, Kamengski, Dinas Artistik Kota, Made Fake, Serrum, Total Graffiti, Toro Elmar, and more. The action was meant to be a historical moment where the Indonesian street artists showed their ideas to struggle for a better Indonesia.

Memories Revisited O

ktianita Kusmugiarti (Tia) and Leyla Aprilia (Ella) are best friends. They first met at the Art Faculty of Bandung’s Institute of Technology. Together they took print class and since then they have attempted to challenge the art world. In the exhibition titled ‘Friends & Co.’ at Inkubator/Forme, which was held from the 22nd of January until 15th February, Tia and Ella presented a subject that was close to their daily life, namely their friends and family. Despite the pair being very close, they do differ somewhat in their methods of bringing about their subjects. Tia does it with spontaneity, in a flow that includes a higher complexity of intuitive forms and attractively distorting figures by displaying portraits of her imaginary ‘friends’ wearing costumes of familiar characters such as Superman, pirates, Mickey Mouse, etc. In addition the child like portraits she also showcases depict famous inventors whom she admires, as well as portraits of her friends.

Meanwhile, Ella visualizes the childhood of her parents, presenting them in a more artistic manner. Ella is able to perceive the exact moment her parents took the pictures in her paintings by imagining the settings of the era and adding them into the art piece. To get the correct moment of each picture, Ella intensely researches the photos and matches them with current affairs that were happening at that time. Both of the artists show interesting characteristics through the many correlations to popular culture, such as in Tia’s works and the images of photographs, circulated through the Internet and print. Through Ella’s works, we can also see an articulation of memory through a series of narrations that reflect the longing of the past in the selves of the modern who live in an era of quick fixes and instant gratification.

From Simple

Things to Amazing Life

A

range of ecological problems have arisen due to the consequences of our actions. As beings with the most power, knowledge and ability to control and exploit nature we have an obligation to correct our wrongs. The ‘Life is Amazing’ exhibition held at Green Artspace, Cipete between the 22nd of January and 20th of February promoted the intention of encouraging the artists involved to revisit the probably forgotten relationship values between man and nature.

In this exhibition, Endro’s work, ‘Delightful Moment’ presented fragments of two birds playing on a bed of red flowers. This is Endro’s metaphor for a beautiful life - full of happiness - and the blurred representation points at life’s uncertainties, which is full of vagueness. Galung Wiratmaja’s ‘Instant Green’, presents a colour composition with green nuances. At the top, three bottles pour out green liquid over a surface of darker green. This abstract style is a

language of expression chosen to develop symbolic narratives about his beliefs and concerns about nature and his social surroundings. Harry Cahaya presented ‘Black Adusa’, which is the nickname for a certain type of flower. Visually, Harry uses a common perspective, presenting the arrangement of leaves combined with blackish red colors. Through this simple object, however, Harry conveys a profound understanding about the life cycle of living organisms from birth, growth, and death. In ‘Wow Amazing’, Pasek Kusuma Wijaya presents a child holding a piece of paper, looking at skyscrapers from a certain height. The title seems to refer to the viewer and how he expects them to perceive his amazing creation. ‘Welcoming Glory’ by Indra Wahyu also presents a little child, combining a realist figure with natural yet abstract colour compositions. Indra deliberately focuses on the intensity of colour compositions and the presence of the human figure in order to create visual sensations.

Putut Wahyu Widodo presents a work titled ‘Red Alert’, the portrait of a bald man wearing a mask. Putut conveys the message about pollution that has befallen us due to the continued destruction of nature. In ‘Gratitude to You’, Widhi Kertya Semadi uses the medium of vinyl, presenting a vague figure lying prone with hands cupped on the ground. The human figure looks vague because it is not painted but rather created by making holes on the vinyl with a special tool, creating an arrangement of holes in various dimensions, forming a human figure. From something that is simple and small, the artists are able to provide us with something that has a greater significance in relation to the variety of things or phenomenons in life.

Gemini

March 21 - April 20

April 21 - May 20

May 21 - June 21

Your emotional state is somewhat fragile right now, so you need to make sure that you’re ready when the upheaval comes. It’s the perfect time for you to have your family or colleagues convene to think about your shared beliefs and what really brings you all together. You definitely won’t get work finished if you’re preoccupied with the goings on in other people’s lives. Stay focused on what you need to do. You’ll be trying to do too many things all at once - your strong curiosity will lead you off in all sorts of directions, and in the end you achieve nothing, and are frustrated. Have you checked your pile of paperwork lately? It’s a good time to do just that, as that bill you were sure was paid might be hours away from delinquency, and who needs that? Make your own luck.

If you and your sweetheart have been exercising together, it may be the first time you actually feel energy and exhilaration instead of weariness and aching muscles. The astrological influence can give an extra lift to your health - but don’t take it for granted and slack off! Instead, keep up the good work! You may feel that you’re in a hurry, but it’s vital that you slow yourself down as much as possible -- so you can get a better grip on your situation, if for no other reason. A coworker is on your mind or in your face right now, and that could be even more problematic, as everyone’s fuse is extra-short. Things are not really going well for you, and if folks at work or at home slip up and leave some work undone, it’s not the end of the world.

Cancer

Leo

June 22 - July 22

July 23 - August 22

It’s time to buckle down -- and not just for you! It may be time for you to enforce a little team spirit or something subtler, because anyone who strays too far from the norm is bound for trouble. Conflicts are likelier than ever, and you need to do whatever you can to make sure that you’re not escalating them too far. Something small starts to give way, and you almost certainly decide to defend the underdog -- in one way or another. It might be tricky, but you can pull it off if you think big. One of your friends or colleagues needs help in reinvigorating their environment, so show them what to do. Slow down the horses of your chariot; you have reached a bifurcation and need to direct them in one way or the other.

This has probably been something of a saga. You can also have some penetrating insights about your deeper needs. This can help you to see who is valuable in your life. This is also a good time for spiritual work or research activities. You may be forced to be absent during this period for some reason and thus you may have to exercise your authority from a distance. In this benevolent atmosphere you have every chance of connecting with people of influence that could open up splendid opportunities for you. A friend from far away could suddenly decide to visit your town. This person could appear so different that you’re suddenly seeing them in a different light. Once again, your healthier-than-average network pays off for you!

If you have a tight schedule, it could take extra focus and discipline to get everything done. If something can be canceled and saved for another time, do so. Strenuous work should be avoided, as you will be feeling unhurried and carefree. But watch your diet; weight could easily be gained. Seriousness and self-absorption lead to emotional separations from others. Lack of emotional attachments can cause you to feel a bit dejected. Try not to lose yourself in all the madness. Make some time for exercise or quiet meditation. You’ll feel better if you also attend to you! You may want nothing more than to take care of one vitally important problem, but if you don’t stay focused, you are sure to miss your big chance.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Curiosity about the past could come over you. Perhaps a specific historical personage or event has stimulated your interest. As a result, you might want to explore books, the Internet, or other sources of information. You could find yourself tapping into your inner poet. You have always had a magical way with words, and right now your desire to express yourself will be heightened. You could spend the time composing clever e-mails that make the recipient giggle with glee. Or you might woo someone with a romantic poem or a naughty limerick. You’ll enjoy playing with language and shaping words in creative ways. Go for it. Not only will you find the subject interesting and your classmates congenial, the discussions that inevitably result can bring you closer together.

Dec 22 - Jan 20

Jan 21 - Feb 18

This is a good time to immerse yourself in the company of other people. Although sometimes you prefer to be on your own, you’ll enjoy more social energies now. At a social event, you might circulate amongst friends and acquaintances and get to know them better. It reinforce your capacity to grasp things, and this gives you added authority within your circle of friends. You cherish your social life, your interactions with associates will reach a new level of friendliness. The astral configuration strongly indicates that this could open the door to a positive turn in life. Enjoy! A social event or group activity could find you and your current love interest surrounded by people involved in the sciences.

It’s more likely to be positive than negative, but that doesn’t make it any easier. It’s best to do it quickly, but your good judgment is vital. Others will have to go along with these changes or they will be left behind in a cloud of dust as you, energetically, blaze a powerful trail to better and greater personal ambitions and achievements. Expect some of your well-known intensity to escape, leaving those nearby a little nervous -- which can work to your advantage. A little boredom never killed anyone, and it might give your mind the room it needs to wander freely and come up with new ideas. It is all about recycling -- in all its forms. You can (and should) rid yourself of excess, but you need to make sure that you also reuse anything that can somehow be given new life.

You are making a big effort to attract people by making the first step towards them, and this proves to be a good tactic. All you need to then do is decide if you want to take things further. Your savvy instincts are finely honed right now, and you should be able to get your friends to watch your back while you deal with whatever threat has appeared to challenge your supremacy. Your skills could be called on. You’ve always known how to make friends and influence people. When you have to, you have no difficulties impressing people in authority. Your ability to attract attention, investments, suitors or whatever else you desire is heightened right now -- so make sure that all of the right people know that you are available!

Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 This may be a complete departure from what you are doing now, but even if you do take a step into the unknown, this in itself can turn out to be very much a case of a change being as good as a rest. You may actually be on the road or on vacation, or perhaps you’re transitioning away from a job or relationship that just isn’t working for you anymore. Your great emotional energy affords you the opportunity to give up control over some aspect of your life without fretting or freaking out. It is constantly asking you to look left, right and center with hesitation before every decision, and thus slow you down at every turn. Well, it looks like you cannot go any faster, but keep going anyway!

From Hydra to The Hydrant to Zio to Dialog Dini Hari: Any words that represen Zio’s music evolution?

Dini Hari management for the accurate schedules, and taking the weight off my shoulders a bit… Love them a lot!

It would be Rock and Roll… Either modern Rock, old school Rockabilly, Alternative or Acoustic Folk Blues… Still it’s about Rock and Roll.

Art Café showcases national and local musicians and artists, while foreigners play as guests. Any vision within the movement?

What is music to Zio?

Wow, movement? I can say someone’s watching what we’re doing.. Haha… Since day one I’ve always wanted to give more exposure to local artists to perform in Art Café, amateur or pro… Hopefully this year we will bring it on back again with plans I already have on my desk.

Like water, air and earth… This is the earth I walk on, so what I do is just enjoy the breeze of life while I’m in it.… After the new album, any fresh agendas for Dialog Dini Hari (DDH) in 2011?

The biggest challenge in the restaurant business in Bali?

Second album promo in middle 2011. Third album is in the kitchen already now.

Low season... Almost everyone feels this way right? Hahaha.

You run Art Cafe while actively pursuing your rock n roll: How do you keep a balance between music and business?

Most amazing experience while running Art Café?

It’s a busy year now for Art Cafe, with renovation and kitchen enlargement. I want to serve my guests the best. The new look Villa Kresna on Jalan Sarinande will be in operation this March. And there will be a coffee shop just a minute’s walk away from the beach under the same management. So I thank Team Asmara Group who manage Villa Kresna and Art Café as well as Dialog

One day I sat down with the owner, and these two tourists peddled past on their bicycles in front of Art Café. One of them said in a loud voice to the new visiting friend “It’s a beautiful place and the food is delicious too”. And I just smiled. However, this is clearly part of its charm, and along with it’s cheap prices and antique décor this little Seminyak oasis should definitely not be overlooked.

After swiftly quaffing an iced lime juice (maximum refreshment), we order up a starter of cakwe udang (40k). Dining alone this would almost be a full meal in itself. Being something of a rib fan I order up a plate of iga sapi madu bakar (50k) off the beef section of the menu. The sweet and tender meat literally falls off the bone, so things get a touch messy as I attempt to shovel a bit of fresh sambal matah on top. Luckily though two of my fellow diners are facing a similar issue whilst digging into the seafood basket special (135k). Consisting of gurame fish, squid, gindara, prawns and mahi mahi, the seafood special represents excellent value, and is more than enough for two hungry appetites.
