Classicalmusic Classicalmusic

To find classical music events to report every two weeks can be very challenging sometimes, especially when you live in a city where art and culture are still struggling for survival. But sometimes, this kind of challenge leads us to something new and refreshing. During my research on trying to find news this time, I found an interesting university choir called Agria Swara. Most prominent universities in Indonesia usually have their own choir, and so does Institute Pertanian Bogor known as IPB. This renowned agriculture institute in Bogor apparently already has had their own choir since 1985, but it was not until 1993 when the choir was finally established and acknowledged by the university. Since that time, they have changed the name to Agria Swara. On this coming March 10th, Agria Swara choir is planning to perform their 6th annual concert called “Harmony and Cacophony – Best of Both Worlds” under Arvin Zeinullah’s direction as conductor. Little is known about the program of this concert, except for some Japanese folk songs that they are planning to sing. With the word “cacophony” in the title, I feel that they might plan to explore the world of avant-garde music known as ‘atonal music’. Well, if you are a big fan of Alban Berg or Arnold Schoenberg’s atonal compositions, then the cacophony that Agria Swara choir is offering here might actually please you.

Though we don’t know much about the program, I still believe this will be a great concert as Agria Swara choir is regarded as one of the great choirs in Indonesia. During their long journey as a choir, they have won many international choir competition awards in competitions such as The 4th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition in Germany in 2005, the 11th International Choir Festival and Competition in Hungary in 2007, and Rimini International Choral Competition in Italy in 2009. With such high reputation and credibility, I believe Agria Swara choir’s upcoming concert will actually be quite exciting to watch. Lady Antebellum Need You Now

Nas & Damian Marley Distant Relatives

Perhaps winning a Grammy for best album will draw more attention to this three-piece country group, but Lady Antebellum are no newcomers, having enjoyed a long career with pop, country and melodious folk-ballads all strings to their collective bow. Noteworthy single ‘Need You Now’ is still as popular as ever with continued airplay on the radio. Somehow their tried and tested unique music formula works for listeners of almost all ages worldwide, and they occupy a similar status to family friendly chartsters Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. DK

Providing the best of both worlds, lyrical hip hop microphonist Nasir Jones and the socially conscious reggae amplifier Damian Marley combine on this duet album to wonderful effect. No doubt due largely to Marley’s laid-back influence, the tunes are easy on the ears and provide some nice insights life, the universe and everything. So the album is not a difficult, hate-fuelled collection songs, but instead intellectually driven biblical chant, with hope as the essence. DK.

Sajama Cut: Sesi Pengunduhan Gratis

Feature

S

ajama Cut masih bersemangat menggeliat.

A few months after releasing their third fulllength album ‘Manimal’, Sajama Cut are back with an interesting new concept; releasing double singles which can be downloaded for free. Since Feb 24th this sextet has been distributing ‘Twice (Rung the Ladder)’ and ‘Poral Molice’ online at a few local music websites. According to the mastermind, Marcel Thee, these two singles basically talk about leaving archaic perspectives and moving on to more critical thought whilst never stopping progress or following your heart. Download the double singles now, at among others, http://deathrockstar.info and http:// musik.kapanlagi.com

Skyjumpers Skyjumpers TheSky Grabber Cool A

pparently, car-free days in Jakarta are an advantage to a lot of communities. One of those communities is the Skyjumpers. To be clear, Skyjumper is the community, and Powerbocking is the act. It is an act of jumping and running with elastic-like spring-loaded stilts - the instruments usually referred to as “jumping stilts”, “power stilts”, or “spring stilts”. With benefits found in other sports such as strengthening the body and building muscles; it’s a new kind of fun that is spreading all around the world. Other than ordinary jumping and running, extreme topsy-turvy jumping exercises the body, and the use of jumping stilts is also said to exercise the brain due to constant concentration and focus needed to balance. The main criteria needed for the training location is wide-open spaces in order to move freely without the risk of hurting other jumpers or bystanders. Skyjumper was established around June 2010 without a formal structure or management. It started with a common interest in this form of sport on a few social networking sites, so it really

beatmag.com 044

is an open community which anyone can join without any member fees. Until recently, there are only 45 active members, but bear in mind that the community has only been established for just a few months. For now, the Skyjumpers don’t have scheduled training sessions, just occasional gatherings and practice on certain dates. Powerbocking is not a sport we can define as cheap. A pair of jumping stilts is pretty expensive, ranging from around 800k (for children) – 1.500k (for adults). Well, even though it’s not an easy sport and does require a little money initially, the fun in Powerbocking remains highly satisfying and exhilarating. If you’re interested, go to their website at http:// www.skyjumpers-indonesia.com or their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/group. php?gid=119141124801105 to get the practice dates.

BISTRO DINING IN CLASSY MENTENG

Bistro Boulevard Jl. Teuku Umar No1 Menteng. 021 3900899

B

istro Boulevard is probably a more apt name than the previous moniker ‘Buddhabar’ for a stylish restaurant and building in Menteng’s leafy streets - indeed one of Jakarta’s more prestigious suburbs. The suburb is home to government ministers, famous people and is now home to a new restaurant called Bistro Boulevard. After opening to much fan-fare almost two years ago the original resident of the old immigration building at No 1 Jalan Teuku Umar, Buddha Bar was a major success until Buddhist groups began to protest against the use of their name for a bar, eventually bringing it to a grinding stop. Now, after a re-think and a change of name, the new restaurant has taken shape and become a more accommodating and casual, bistro style restaurant. Kiwi Chef Alex Ensor is still onboard, as are many of the previous staff, and this time around he has created a simpler and more family friendly style menu. This is sure to nicely complement the new, spacious design and concept of the restaurant. The main dining area is now downstairs while the upstairs dining room from before, minus the big Buddha, will be used mainly for functions and private gatherings. The food will be simpler and easier on the wallet according to GM Bogdan Vlase who we sat down with to enjoy lunch recently in the almost finished bistro. It looks great, the food is as good as ever - if not better - and the entrance is completely new coming through the old garden area, which has been opened up to become a driveway drop-off point. The new Bistro Boulevard looks set to make a permanent mark on the dining scene on the wide and leafy streets of the Menteng area. It will be interesting to see it open again in March, softly opened on March 16. [David Trauts]

was one of those busy mid weeks. My friend Wahyu and I wanted to have a creative brainstorming session, but we definitely didn’t want to have it within the four walls of our office meeting room. So off we went to Gandaria City mall, which is not too far from our office, and after looking for a place to eat, we decided on Giovanese. We were greeted by Miss Uchie, the restaurant’s Operations Manager. She informed us that Giovanese opened just a little over a month ago. The owner of Giovanese, Mr. Boejono Tjokro, wanted to have an eatery which combines Italian and Mexican cuisine. Plus, a nice place to enjoy some good quality wines as well. Well, I think we’re in the right place!

just falls off the bones nicely. Wahyu chose to go Mexican with his Chicken and Beef Combo Grilled Fajitas (80k). The meats are served on a sizzling skillet with some peppers, onions, and capsicums, accompanied by some warm tortillas, lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, and mixed cheese. ¡Que delicioso! Miss Uchie also suggested that we try their creation, the Thorny Bud (40k). What is that, I hear you ask? Well, it was an awesome mousse cake made from fresh durian (yes, durian!), and topped with chocolate fudge. I’m not a big fan of durians, but I must say that that dessert was quite scrumptious! You just have to try it for yourself.

We continued our meeting of the minds for a while longer. We had a Café Latte (25k) and Fruity After recommending some favourites to us, Miss Rossi Mix mocktail (strawberry, raspberry, and Uchie left us to get our brainstorming session orange juice plus sparkling water 27.5k) to keep started. Some wine (Australia’s De Bortoli Shiraz us accompanied. Cabernet 2008; 95k/glass) certainly helped to get our creativity going. And so it was that our brainstorming session, photo-taking, and a good chat with Giovanese’s We did get some ideas out, but Wahyu (who’s also Miss Uchie ended up being a good little escapea budding photographer) couldn’t resist taking from-the-office outing. We are definitely planning pictures of Giovanese’s unique Italian-inspired on coming back to this new and exciting interior - and of course, of the food! restaurant. Next time, we might bring the whole creative team for an informal meeting here! There We started with the Cowboy’s Buffalo Wings are still a lot of good dishes to choose from, but (50k). ‘Comfort food with an edge’, that’s how I can describe the dishes at this new and exciting eatery called The Goods Café. There’s a new player in town that looks set to give other restaurants a run for their money. The Goods Café is a part of The Goods Department, a curated department store concept by the creators of Brightspot Market. Located at Plaza Indonesia Extension, the café opened on January 11th, 2011.

Life is between Drama and Comedy!

Johan Tandoko, the TBJ film critic.

Life is indeed about drama and comedy. One moment we’re crying, another moment and we’re laughing. Wanna see some flicks to prove this idea? Watch the lives of a happily married old English couple, Latina from-everything-to-nothing sisters, and a loveable Thai comedian, only at www.blitzmegaplex.com!

Another Year Drama, Comedy. Writer & Director: Mike Leigh. Cast: Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen, Lesley Manville. Writer & Director Mike Leigh (Happy-Go-Lucky) is back with a new friends-and-family group portrait kind of film. Tom and Gerri are a happily married middle-aged couple content with their lives, fulfilled in their careers, and peaceful at the thought of reasonably imminent retirement. Spanning one year, the movie follows the passing of the four seasons of one average year surrounded by friends, colleagues, and family who all seem to suffer some degree of unhappiness. Somehow this couple turn out to be the guiding light for these lost souls around them. This film is another good intimate ensemble drama about ordinary people, and audiences will relate to the natural characters portrayed in it. Prepare a cup of hot English Breakfast tea to sip along with the extended dialogue scenes!

From Prada to Nada Drama, Comedy. Director: Angel Gracia. Writers: Fina Torres, Luis Alfaro. Cast: Camilla Belle, Alexa Vega, Kuno Becker, Nicholas D’Agosto, Adriana Barraza.

Most of Jane Austen’s renowned novels have been adapted into movies, mostly in classic style. However, imagine if the famous “Sense and Sensibility” was made into a modern version, with a Latina twist. From Prada to Nada is a movie that fits right in with that idea. Two spoiled Mexican sisters get left penniless after their rich father’s sudden death, and are forced to move in with their distant aunt in some Latino-centric neighborhood of East Los Angeles. The story flows on how these two manage to adapt with no such thing as privilege and designer boutique shopping, learning about their origins culture, language, and people until they can eventually embrace the love of family and community. Pretty Latina actresses, Camilla Belle (When A Stranger Calls) and Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) will Chacha up the screen for sure. Dress in glamorous style, be ghetto, and nibble on some nachos!

The Little Comedian Drama, Comedy. Directors: Vithaya Thongyuyong, Mez Tharatorn. Cast: Paula Taylor, Chawin Likitjareonpong, Jaturong Phonboon, Nachapat Charurattanawaree. Tock, a 12 year old boy, has a lot to live up to. Not only that he’s named after Thailand’s legendary comedian ‘Lor Tock’, but he is also the supposed heir to his family’s comedic legacy. However, Tock isn’t funny - and his father starts to lose hope with him. Tock struggles to come up with new gags in attempt to earn his father’s respect and love. Feeling alienated Tock dreams about pretty dermatologist Dr. Ice, whom he falls in love with at first sight. In her, Tock finds appreciation and comfort as she’s the first person ever to laugh at his jokes. This isn’t just a mere coming-of-age boy’s puppy crush kind of story. It is rich in brilliant acting, funny Thai local jokes, and touching in its universal father-and-son relationship.

Surreal Interpretation of Religiosity

At

a glance, this exhibition looks like a series of a comic characters applied into several different mediums. However, these artworks have a deeper meaning than it first seems. After an exhibition in Yogyakarta, ‘The Tales of Gwen Silent’ could be viewed in Bentara Budaya Jakarta, between February 24th and March 5th, 2011. This exhibition revolves around Gwen Silent, a character created A.C. Andre Tanama. She’s a little mouthless girl who is always depicted with closed eyes. Jim Supangkat, the curator of the exhibition, said at the opening that there is a new generation of artists that are heavily influenced by comic culture. However, what makes Andre special is his ability to translate the dual realism of comic narration into theatrical artworks that speak the emotion directly. Indeed, there are some layers of dimension in Andre’s artworks. One of the most tangible dimensions is the spirituality - the viewer cannot miss the transcendental questions that are portrayed in the exhibition. It seems that Gwen Silent is the artist’s metaphor for questioning the unquestionable. Aside from Andre’s religious background, Gwen Silent’s holy mission is to find the connections of a deity without any relation to religion. [@ribosa]

Move Over,

Spongebob!

R.Yuki

Agriardi presents his artistic creations of the underwater world by showing images of various marine animals such as puffer fish, eels, jellyfish, octopi, whales, mantas and crabs. The pictured personifications hint at a few general experiences, as well as fables and childhood stories. ‘Dive’ is his solo exhibition currently displaying at Inkubator in the Forme Building from February

26th until March 15th, 2011. Yuki creates his works using rubber stamps, stencils, ink, watercolours, dry pigments, wax and blue acrylic combined with fiery red. He sweeps, brushes and rubs the paper surface, creating wild textures that are at the same time also gracefully controlled. Yuki creates such images with the intention of creating embodiments of human characters through thorough observations and analysis. The characteristics of his works have much to do with

Art

the phenomena found in nature. In ‘The Postal Air Worker’, he draws a porcupine fish with a bag attached to it, accompanied by a bird, while in ‘The Lonesome Actor’, he presents a hermit crab calmly carrying a mask. Some of the gestures and shapes are associated with objects and kinds of professions. In ‘The Rushed Hairdresser Party’, he presents a school of jellyfish performing movements that we might associate with the movements of hair-cutting scissors. Similarly, ‘The Ravenous Super Perch’

shows a school of small fish whirling and moving in a circle as they are searching for food. Dominated by nuances of blue and strengthened with a variety of techniques, Yuki’s works tend to gravitate towards the style of animation films. He seems to have the tendency of playing with his imagination to reveal gestural similarities between humans and animals. However, you will not find Spongebob Squarepants here. He’s too yellow to be blued by Yuki. [@ribosa]

Over a cup of coffee C

offee is an essential part of life for people in the creative industry. A few sips of caffeine can help to get more inspiration or simply just to stay awake.

A bunch of illustrators, photographers, comic artists, graphic designers and art directors exhibited their coffee-inspired artworks in the ‘Kopi Keliling’ exhibition, from February 20th to March 5th, 2011. To further enhance the main inspiration, the exhibition did not take place in a gallery, but in a coffee shop in Kemang called Tornado Coffee.

The artists exhibited in ‘Kopi Keliling’ are Thunderpanda, Hendy Musa, Emte (Muhammad Taufiq), Lala Bohang, Bugsy, Moreza, Motulz, and Dmaz Brodjonegoro. However, this exhibition believes that everyone has the right to express their artistic ideas, even though those people may not be artists at all. The organizer provided paper, pencils and markers for the use of exhibition viewers or coffee shop guests. It is amazing what can happen over a cup of coffee. [@ribosa]

Putting the “Ooo” in Looove M aybe love really is the most overrated theme. It feels good and… it sells. However, you can expect different results from ‘Love/Lies (Secret)’, another ARTiculation exhibition that is being held in Portico Terrace Bistro, Senayan City, Jakarta from February 10th to March 22nd, 2011. Most of the artworks show the wider sense of love. The sweet and sorrow part of love is well-pictured by Tisa Granicia, Agra Satria, Sun Wahyu, Ika Putranto, Shawnee Putti, Vonny Ratna Indah, G. Prima Puspita Sari and Mira Yasmin Sandytia.

In ‘Makan Hatimu Sesuai Caramu Sendiri...’, G. Prima Puspita Sari extends the literal meaning of the well-known expression ‘Eat your heart out’. She places five pieces of hearts on trays with various serving suggestions symbolized by the knife on top of each one. It shows a bitter part of love that only exists when the word itself has lost its meaning. Agra Satria’s ‘Grasp’ has a slight allusion to Toy Story 3. He shows the childish love of toys in his installation, as if those cartoon characters have joined with The Power Rangers. ‘Lust’, another piece by Agra, is the most interesting artwork in the exhibition. He portrays an inter-species eroticism between Pinocchio, a living wooden doll, and Bambi, a deer. Due to its strong visual controversy, this provocative artwork is only available for viewing on the opening night. [@ribosa]

April 21 - May 20

If you feel irritable or tired, why not indulge yourself in some way? Even a little treat can be good. This isn’t a good time for extremes (for you, it rarely is), so try to temper it with some optimism. The energy could make you a little nervous and on edge. Being around people you could feel disruptive, and you might be sensitive to other people’s moods and energy. This is not the time for daydreaming or brainstorming -- you need to take action! It may be that your peers are all going off in different directions, but you can go it alone if you have to. You are all fired up with righteous anger (or hope, or even dread). Don’t give in to despair -- it’s one of those times when your situation seems hopeless, but perseverance is sure to pay off this time.

You could experience some minor tensions in relations with your partner and should try to be more accepting of their point of view. It’s slowing in the pace of your plans is particularly relevant where links with others are concerned: partnerships, contracts, teamwork. Your partner might not see the same picture as you do. You stand on opposite sides, staring at each other. You love drama, and your significant other stands aloof. Discuss your feelings with each other, and give your loved one plenty of space to think things out. Under the present celestial configuration feelings can easily be misunderstood. Others may seem quick to point out anything that you miss out - especially at work, so you will need to concentrate.

Cancer

Leo

June 22 - July 22

July 23 - August 22

Your significant other will do anything to give you pleasure, and in return, you’ll be trying to predict and make them wishes come true. Who needs your help the most? That’s your most important question, as your energy is best spent on others. The current transits imply that this relationship shows a lot of promise for the future, and is definitely worth pursuing. It could be that you find someone drawn to you for reasons neither of you can understand -- so just go with it! Someone is impressed with you right now, and you would do well to accept their praise. Maybe you are just ready to experience greater closeness and happiness with a soul mate. Right now you could be experiencing a powerful sense of connection to someone.

Have you been resisting the idea of commitment in a current romantic relationship? In spite of yourself, you could find your thoughts moving in that direction. Fantasies of being together for the rest of your lives could pop into your mind unbidden. The current aspect at play suggests that maybe that’s where the relationship is headed, whether you like it or not. Don’t hold yourself back from it. Make your fantasy a reality. You relate to others in a friendly way now and tend to socialize naturally and easily. You need to move forward and start a relationship! It’s time to get a little closer to the person who’s been making eyes at you. You cannot help but blossom in the presence of your significant other, and you radiate happiness all around you.

Gemini May 21 - June 21 Even if they are to blame, there really is nothing to be gained by being angry or trying to get others to take responsibility for the way you’re feeling. Trust your own instincts about this person, and don’t be tempted to believe anything you hear. This could cause you to want to ponder quietly and alone the possible future of this relationship. You may be feeling a bit too attached to someone who’s not good for you -- or maybe just not as good as the competition! Try to resolve these difficulties within yourself before expressing your feelings to your partner. You don’t want any hurt feelings. It’s quite likely that someone close is breathing down your neck, though, so try to get them to back off in the gentlest way possible.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 Education comes in many forms, and you may find yourself quite a bit smarter by the end. There’s a strong chance that anything you begin now, will stand the test of time. This is certainly a time to take advantage of any opportunities that come your way. Starting a new study or retraining plan could also work to your advantage. A whole world of opportunities is there for you to be discovered. All that brainy energy needs to be put to good use -- so go for it! Solutions to previously insurmountable problems could come in an instant. It provide you with qualities such as diplomacy and intelligence, success and modesty. Opportunities for higher education or pretigious assignments will be now available.

Your concentration and patience threshold will be much higher than usual. Therefore, if there is any task that needs serious thought, study or concentration, then now would be an excellent time to tackle it. You won’t balk at changing your method of working, undertaking a course of training, or even setting up your own business. Something has to give and you have every intention of moving your career in the direction of as much autonomy as possible. You will be in search of excitement, drama and adventure you will now demand personal freedom and independence. It favors any opportunities for expansion, on the other hand enhances your adaptability and your ability to question yourself.

The change will be positive, but you will soon see that your life will become very different for you as far as your routine goes. Your drive for success ought to inspire those around you to do the same. You may find that your energy is better spent on planning for the future. It’s a really good time for you to step up and offer to tackle additional responsibilities. Your lasting power is legendary, you can get plenty done without even trying that hard. You almost certainly should find a good way to tackle that one tough problem, and everything just feels more stable than usual for you and your people. It’s a really good time for you to experiment with new ways of getting things done, as your ability to evaluate systems is also heightened.

Capricorn

Aquarius

Dec 22 - Jan 20

Jan 21 - Feb 18

Someone is hiding just out of sight in your social circle, and you would do well to ferret them out -- they might have info or resources you can use. Your energy should keep pushing you forward past all obstacles until you reach a goal or milestone that feels satisfying to you. Someone new changes your mind about an important issue, so make sure that you’re listening and can adapt when needed. You will find it impossible to sit still and you should be much busier than usual. Your sincerity and the strength of your convictions will help you remove the irritations that have been causing conflict, and will allow you to start afresh, from a much healthier foundation. In your professional life, your situation is developing, regardless of whether you have made a decision or not, since certain things come to an end while others are starting to see the light.

Your action radius is rather reduced, because the people higher up are not giving you the recognition and trust that you deserve. You may think that neither movement satisfies you anymore. If that’s the case, perhaps you should start your own. Professionally speaking, you are going through a period of reflection, which might cause you to withdraw into yourself somewhat. You may not have much option but to give in. If you can do so graciously rather than being stubborn you may get your way in the end anyway. Have patience. Important personal and business decisions should be postponed until your way of behaving is less impulsive and more practical. Your creative energy is vibrant now, but you need to do something about your inner critic.

Sagittarius Nov 23 – Dec 21 You can impress even the stoniest employer or date -- though if they’re really that tough, you may have second thoughts about letting them have any more of your time. Pick someone who appreciates you. At work, the combined positive energies are indicating some brilliant success or dazzling project advancement! Your colleagues will be queuing up to acknowledge your leadership qualities, your decisiveness and strategic intelligence. You may find that your friends or colleagues are waiting for you without letting you know, so get busy and see what happens. You’ve got plenty going on -- which is just how you like it -- but you’re not so busy that you can’t slow down and play with your teammates, customers or friends. Good fun is easy to find!

Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 It’s a really good idea for you to make some time for yourself so you can listen to that inner voice and heed its advice as closely as you can. Work is tough to handle, even if it’s just one email sitting there staring at you from your in-box. You’ll need some quiet time to yourself, and if this is something unusual for you, you’d better learn how to create some space for yourself. That’s not to say that you should become a monster, just that you need to take care of yourself first and foremost. You know you’re on the right side, which is something, but it might be harder than usual for you to convince the usual suspects. You’re either feeling pretty down, or you’re all the way on top -- there’s just no middle ground for you.

ThePeculiar Ambiguities of the Hipster Subculture By Rsty Shcklfrd

HH

ipster. Some people have never heard the term. Some live it. After years of going deep undercover in order to investigate this grotesquely contradictory subculture of middle class teenagers and young adults, my results are rather confusing and my objectivity has wondered wayward to a land where cool is uncool, being a nerd is popular and to not match is to match. This, strangely enough, is exactly what being a hipster is all about. Hipsterdom arrived on the scene in the late 90s and has since mutated itself in a variety of ways that are sometime mutually exclusive to one another. Basic criteria for part of this

alternative culture included the love of organic food, any independent media, thrift clothes, creativity, micro brews, and a slight snicker at anything mainstream. If you ask a hipster whether or not he or she is one, you will most definitely get no for an answer. This is the way they operate, but if you confront a small group of hipsters, you’ll get a flurry of finger pointing and accusations that will eventually reveal the entire group to be hipsters. So here are a few tips for identifying who is in on this sub group. Appearance can greatly vary with these individuals, but in a pack you can identify some very obvious themes. Tight jeans are the most obvious giveaway but do not positively confirm or identify a hipster. Look out for faux vintage clothing or t-shirts that have their necks stretched out. Leggings are also a dead giveaway as are glasses with absolutely no prescription. Another telltale sign is tattoos. Anything tribal will automatically exclude a person from being a hipster. Something vintage from childhood, like videogame or cartoon characters, is almost certain to grace the skin of these youths. Beards, traditionally the facial hair of blue collar men, will definitely flush out a hipster if they work in a creative setting. A retro haircut on a female of this type in combination with any of the above is a surefire positive identification. You will occasionally see them on a fixed gear bicycle, popularly known as a “fixie”. These

fashionable bikes are indeed a contradiction on two wheels. They’re bikes that have their pedals fixed to their wheels and no brakes so that the only way to stop is to peddle slower or not at all. This makes it considerably harder to ride than a conventional bike. Hipsters, perpetual slaves to fashion, adore the fixie as a unique vehicle that rebels against the mainstream. While not all hipsters ride a fixed gear bicycle, all fixed gear bicycles are owned by hipsters. That’s a cold hard fact. This culture is particularly wired and influenced by technological advances yet it adores everything vintage. They blog and socially network a considerable amount of their lives for all the world to see, because deep in the heart of every hipster, with their puzzling clothes and peculiar tattoos is a hidden attention seeker. But the blogs and facebook profiles are not ignored, almost every Lomo image uploaded are studied and carefully scrutinized by people who have grasped this type of cool and turnaround and resell it back to the hipster culture they were inspired by. This vicious cycle of originality and consumerism has led to an increasing amount of common folk to melt into the blurring lines of the once unique and totally independent hipster. So the ultimate contradiction will inevitably take place, something cool for being outside of the mainstream will eventually become the mainstream.

Food review

Unico

Italian Restaurant Let’s face it, everyone loves a good Italian. Sure, you can knock up some instant pasta or slide a frozen store-bought pizza into your oven at home, but there’s simply nothing like sitting at an Italian restaurant; white tablecloth, red wine, the gypsy kings and authentic food – just like mama used to make… Well, if she was Italian anyway.

J

oining the other existing Italian eateries around Bali comes new kid on the block Unico on Jl. Kunti. For me, the only way international restaurants (especially in Bali) can really work is if they actually have someone from that particular country at the helm. So it’s with great relief that I greet the beaming faces of Antonio and Matteo (owner and chef respectively) upon arrival at Unico. Despite having spent a considerable amount of time here in Bali, both gents are as Italian as they come and make me feel instantly welcome as I pull up a chair. The décor is stylishly modern with block red and black colours dominating both the ground floor and mezzanine level, along with a friendly and efficient staff who are busily buzzing around. A large brick wood-fired pizza oven dominates the downstairs area, with a couple of well-trained pizza dough throwers making it look all too easy. Antonio recommends a bianca al rosmarindo white pizza (30k+) to kick things off along with a nice glass of Italian house white (35k!!). Suitably impressed with the excellent value of the plonk, I hungrily tuck in to the crispy foccacia as Antonio explains that for him, the important things for Unico are quality and value – two admirable attributes for a restaurant in this area. He’s keen to make an impact, and it’s clear that he has a real passion for Italian food so I decide to let Antonio do the ordering. First up off the secondi piatti menu (who says you have to start with a starter?) comes the vitello tonnato (45k+). The delicious, thinly sliced cold cuts of veal bathed in Italian mayonnaise & tuna sauce with capers go down a treat, with the remnants of our foccacia bianco used to mop the

plate clean. Feeling in the sharing mood, we next opt for the sardine in saor (28k+) from the antipasti appetizer menu. A tangy, balsamic onion chutney covers chunks of succulent pickled sardine, which once again doesn’t touch the sides and is swiftly scoffed. Antonio has clearly noticed me eyeing the hive of activity that is the wood fired oven, and before we have time to swig another glass of the excellent house white orders up a quattro staggioni pizza (60k+) for everyone to sample. Tomato, mozzarella, artichokes, ham, mushrooms and black olives is more or less the perfect topping combo in my opinion, and the light and crispy crust and perfectly balanced base suggest that Antonio has made more than a few pizzas in his time. “In my last job, sometimes 150 a day,” he confirms, showing that the perfect pizza recipe takes time, practice and something more than a passing interest in Italian cuisine. After plenty more animated banter regarding the finer points of Italian cooking, we order up a couple of mains to try. The tagliata alla rucola (70k+) and the pappardelle verdi al funghi (35k+) both don’t touch the sides, with the succulent grilled beef tenderloin of the tagliata a particular highlight. With just enough room to share a tortino di cioccolato con gelato from the dolce menu, it’s time to wave goodbye to our animated host for the evening, vowing to return the next time we get a hankering for some good Italian grub.
