After weeks of endless rain, the sun has finally reemerged after its long siesta and the heat of summer can be felt once again. The entertainment has also gotten hotter with even bigger and better international acts making their way to the stages in Jakarta. The biggest thing to hit the scene right now, apart from the hilarious Indian dancing police officer on Youtube, Briptu Norman, is the highly anticipated concert by Maroon 5. After the very enjoyable performance of Bruno Mars last fortnight, this is set to be another record breaking crowd. Let’s just hope Istora Senayan can fit in the massive crowd. Other top performances are on their way as well, so check out the Here Now and What’s On section to see what’s on the horizon. Semoga Istora Senayan sanggup menampung semua penggemar Maroon 5. Masih banyak lagi yang akan tampil di Jakarta, langsung saja baca rubrik Here Now dan What’s On untuk planning dua minggu kedepan.

Classicalmusic

By Erza S.T.

Easter Melodies Classical music lovers in Jakarta have surely been spoiled during this month of April. Choir performances, a guitar recital and a pocket opera by Ananda Sukarlan filled up the first half of this month, but fear not as we still have more interesting upcoming performances for the rest of the month.

To welcome this coming Easter holiday at the end of April, The Jakarta Oratorio Society and Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra under the conductor of Dr. Jahja Ling will bring you some great Beethoven compositions for orchestra and choral. They are also bringing guest musicians like Lu Wei, famous violinists and the youngest concert master in the world currently the concert master of The Deutsches Symphony Orchester Berlin.

034 | 034 beatmag.com

Classicalmusic He is the first Chinese person to ever receive such an honour. A native of Beijing, China, Lu began violin lessons with his father at the age of three. At age nine, he was accepted by the renowned violin pedagogue Professor Yao-Ji Lin to attend the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. His impressive talent has brought him to perform with various renowned orchestras in the world and he has received the highest praise from famous figures such as Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman. With Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, Lu Wei will perform Beethoven’s ‘Romance for Violin in F Major’. Furthermore, in this Beethoven Easter Concert 2011, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra will also perform Beethoven’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor’, showcasing the talented Jessie Chang as pianist. Following the Beethoven tradition, the orchestra will also perform the oratorio ‘Christ on the Mount of Olives’. Together with the Jakarta Oratorio Society, several guest soloists such as Ji Young Jun (soprano), Solomon Chong (tenor) and Chen Yong Chen (baritone) will bring this oratorio to its choral climax. Nevertheless, if oratorio and Beethoven is not your cup of tea, then perhaps a new and modern work by Tony Prabowo and Goenawan Mohamad called ‘Opera Tan Malaka’ could be something to your liking. The latest in numerous collaborations of composer Tony Prabowo with librettist Goenawan Mohamad, Opera Tan Malaka was first premiered last year at Festival Salihara 2010. This opera is controversial for featuring Tan Malaka as its main character, and has been banned in several cities in Indonesia that are still sensitive to communist related themes. However, aside from its controversy, this opera has also received much praise, including from The Jakarta Post which wrote: “In the hands of Tony and Goenawan, Tan Malaka has becomes a story of a local communist movement expressed in a highly elitist post-serial European avant-garde musical idiom. Goenawan added a layer of complexity by including a West Sumatran socio-cultural context when using the Malin Kundang, a legend of betrayal, as a basis for his libretto. The end result presents an interesting paradox and problematic work of art.” This opera essay pretty much has no story, but rather a discourse about one of Indonesia’s leading revolutionary figures: Tan Malaka. There is no actor who plays one character and no dialogue too. But there are two aria singers (Binu Sukaman and Nyak Ina Raseuki) and two readers of the text sometimes crossing one another and sometimes parallel. It is a must for avant-garde music enthusiasts.

O

rang sabar disayang Tuhan. Penikmat shoegaze dikasihi The Milo. Album yang mengajakserta 2 bintang tamu di departemen vokal, Maradilla Syachridar (“For All the Dreams that Wings Could Fly”) dan Grace Sahertian (“Apart”) ini dihiasi dengan 8 tembang; 1 berbahasa Indonesia, 6 berbahasa Inggris, pula sepucuk instrumental.

The last time people heard news about The Milo was in 2003 when they released their debut full-length album, ‘Let Me Begin’. Now, 2011, this Bandung quintet is back presenting their newest composition: Photograph. The album consists of eight songs; one in Indonesian, six in English, and an instrumental. Two songs have been chosen as singles, ‘Do Not Worry for Being Alone’ and ‘Daun dan Ranting Menuju Surga’. Two guest stars participate in the vocals department, namely: Maradilla Syachridar (For All the Dreams that Wings Could Fly) and Grace Sahertian (Apart). Photograph has an interesting concept, where The Milo imagines they are holding a camera and using the viewfinder to capture their surroundings, with the lyrics being the result of the shooting. The Milo friends share stories about life, love, separation and introspection. The Milo was founded in 1996 by Ajie Gergaji as his side project. The first time they attracted public attention was when they released a song called ‘Sianida’ in May 2001. [Rudolf Dethu]

Club Reunion ClubReunion T

Like TBJ has mentioned before in earlier editions, it seems like 2011 is the year of the return of Retro. After various clubs holding old school themed events from the 80’s and 90’s, now clubs are holding reunion events of the old clubs from that era, complete with the old resident DJs and music to match. The return of such clubs as Ebony, Zanzibar, Fire Discotheque and many others in some of today’s big clubs has brought out the nostalgia in many who have grown tired of the same old club scene. Will we see the revival of old clubs such as M Club or the legendary Stardust? Or maybe the old school roller discos like Lipstick and Happy Days will see a comeback in another club? Many are hopeful that they can once again relive the highlights of that era, to remember the good old days and gather with old friends.

The second leg of Weekend Roadrunner takes off in Surabaya, gathering many ‘fixie’ aficionados from around the city to promote a healthier mode of transport while showing off their creations.

W

ith the ever growing popularity of fixed gear bikes (more commonly known as ‘fixies’) in the past two years, it’s no surprise that the many communities around the nation would find a way to get together and promote their two wheeled passion. The first leg of the nationwide competition took off in Bandung last February with over 500 participants, and the second part of the competition took place on the 3rd of April in Surabaya. The event itself was made possible SUBFGSS and Badger Invaders, a well known fashion retailer. With a smaller crowd compared to in Bandung, there were over 200 cyclists gathered at Badger Invaders, Surabaya. Amongst the many competitions dreamt up by SUBFGSS was a check point race called ‘Alley Cat’, a trackstand competition where contestants

Several fixie communities such as South Beach Queen (Bandung), Sly Fix (Jakarta), Woof (Jakarta), Cycle Bandidos (Jogyakarta), Fix Ink (Jakarta), Bali Fixie Comm (Bali) and others also participated in the competition bringing the different groups together. After the recent success of the two Weekend Roadrunner events in Bandung and Surabaya, the event will continue to travel through to Jogjakarta and Bali before ending in Jakarta for the final massive fixie gathering. Badger Invaders hope that more and more people will be attracted to each Weekend Roadrunner event, going green and starting cycling for a better and cleaner tomorrow.

ELBOW ROOM When people talk about ‘elbow room’, they usually mean ‘the lack thereof’. Welcome to the coziest, and probably most spacious Elbow Room in town!

L

ocated in the heart of Kemang, Elbow Room is Jakarta’s first ‘gastro-pub’, having become a major player on the capital’s culinary scene. Ponti Young, the man behind the Elbow Room concept, said he was inspired by the gastropubs he had visited in Melbourne and Vancouver. ‘Gastro-pub’ is a term coined back in 1991 by the proprietors of a London pub that was among the first to serve gourmet fare.

beatmag.com 052

Gastro-pubs are usually associated with a warm, cozy ambiance and focus on high quality cuisine at neighbourhood prices. Staying true to form, Elbow Room’s menu offers a variety of European dishes complimented by an exclusive range of imported beers and wines. We visited Elbow Room for lunch recently and were greeted by Maya Cilano, Elbow Room’s marketing manager. With some blues music playing in the background, she gave us a quick tour of the

elegant and cozy place. We then sat down and started to look at culinary choices Elbow Room has to offer. She suggested quite a number of dishes on their expansive menu that would satisfy our hunger. We started us off with the elbow cheese fondue (89k), a combination of cheddar, emmenthal, and mozzarella cheese, served with carrots, broccoli, pickled cucumber, and baguette. This is tasty and a great dish to share, usually before you move on to the main course. Now we know why Elbow Room’s patrons just can’t get enough of this simple yet superb appetizer. Next came the oxtail bucco (95k), a unique blend of oxtail, tomato stew, whipped potatoes and truffle oil in a jar! The glass jar is said to retain the wonderful aroma that comes from this hearty dish. This is quite a creative twist to usual oxtail soups that you simply have to try. We also ordered the Greek lamb wrap (63k) - sautéed lamb, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, black olives and Spanish onions with a tangy mint yoghurt dressing. Maya also mentioned that their crispy pork belly (82k) - served with roasted garlic potatoes, and balsamic mushrooms - is also getting quite a number of orders. The delicious nasi goreng pork belly (39k) is something not to be missed here either.

We then moved from the dining room downstairs to the lounge area upstairs. Here, comfy leather sofas dominate the room, and the large round window adds a dramatic touch to the interior. Elbow Room prides itself on serving an extensive selection of imported beers from Australia, Germany and Belgium among others. While most punters here like to knock back the flavour-infused beers, Maya gave us a taste of Elbow Room’s own creation called ‘Bebe Bola’ (68k). It is a blend of Heineken, vodka, sprite, lychee, lychee monin, and apple, which adds a unique tang to the traditional beer. Nice one, bartender! Elbow Room serves as a fine venue for business entertainment and cozy chats among friends. We had a very good lunch here, but now we’re looking forward to visit them again one evening, sharing drinks and singing along with the lively acoustic band. See you there!

Ten Ten’s specialty is the tempura. Their tempura batter is one of the key factors in making this dish so irresistible. The sweet and sticky soy sauce is the perfect companion for many of the meals here. Tempura is also highly versatile; it goes well with rice, noodles, and even hot dog buns! But more on that later. The mini tempura & beef teriyaki set hits just the right spot. Priced at 50k, you’ll get a bowl of rice, miso soup, some tempura, and teriyaki beef! The Dragon Pearl

Adventure, Fantasy. Director: Mario Andreacchio. Writers: John Armstrong and Philip Dalkin. Cast: Sam Neill, Louis Corbett, Li Lin Jin, Wang Ji, Robert Mammone. Despite falling firmly into the category of ‘family movie’, adults will still find this movie enjoyable thanks to its adventure and action. The story centers on a young boy visiting his archeologist father on a dig in China, and with the help of a new Chinese friend they find an ancient Chinese dragon trapped deep in a hidden cave. Chock full of oriental legendary creatures, exciting adventure and Kung Fu fighting scenes, this movie is enjoyable for all the family!

Suck Seed Comedy, Musical. Writer & Director: Chayanop Boonprakob. Cast: Jirayu La-ongmanee, Natcha Nuanjam, Pashorn Jiratiwat, Thawat Pornrattanaprasert.

A teenage crush, brother-like friendship, and love rivalry between best friends … sounds typical enough? What if we add music to it - and not just high-school-musical kind of singing, but proper rock ‘n roll? A couple of loser schoolboys try to form a rock band to impress the girls and end up in fighting over the hot female guitarist. Suck Seed celebrates the underdog spirit and gives an enjoyably entertaining portrait of failed romance, faulty friendships and shaky musical talents. Put on your electric guitar strap and prepare to rock ‘n roll with a bucket of popcorn, man!

? (Tanda Tanya) Drama. Director: Hanung Bramantyo. Writer: Titin Wattimena. Cast: Reza Rahadian, Revalina S. Temat, Agus Kuncoro, Endhita, Rio Dewanto, Hengky Sulaeman. Another good local film from acclaimed Indonesian director, Hanung Bramantyo (Sang Pencerah) that brings up the important issues in our nation regarding differences in religion, ethnicity, social status and life principle among citizens. The movie is based on the real event of a church bombing a few years ago in Indonesia/. Revolving around three families’ stories from different background, every character is affected by the others. It’s a movie for every Indonesian to watch and learn more about the meaning of difference and tolerance.

Every Type of Body Is Beautiful I guess this is what I and many people would love to see in a fashion show; a collection worn by models of various body shapes. Maybe you have already seen Beth Ditto, the curvy singer, walking down the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier during Paris Fashion Week 2010. Last week they tried to emulate the concept in Indonesia. Happily, Gaultier made it happen for Plaza Indonesia Fashion Week, with four special models, including TBJ’s very own Erza ST, in the fashion show. It was clearly a big hit, successfully gathering applause from the audience whenever these models stepped on the runway. Just look at the photos and I’m sure you’ll see why! Regarding the collection itself, it screamed romantic punk, reflecting 1980s punk subculture with the punk hairstyles, biker chick leathers and beautiful finishing with black lace and fishnet layers. Some outfits that caught my eye were the black suits with wide leather belts and girly anklestrap heels, cone-shaped bra and corset, fringe details, and loose cotton pants tucked into the shoes. Some of the male models wore all-black clothing and shawls which was also a hot look. Rizka, editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude

Wanna Ride Eddi’s Bikes,

Marcel? H

aving gathered all his bicycle artworks together, Eddi Prabandono has named his solo exhibition at Ark Galerie ‘After Duchamp’, referring to looking back at the world art history and putting it in the context that is relevant to the situation in Indonesia. Rather than trying to exceed Duchamp’s achievements, Eddi likes to play with Duchamp’s own definition, making it as flexible as possible. His work underlines both the function of the bicycle as a vehicle and it’s playful side as a tool of mobility. He underlines the idea of how bicycles have become quite a significant transportation mode for most people in Indonesia, though most of these people live in rural areas.

beatmag.com 064

Art

At the same time, his works refer to particular social contexts that can be easily defined once the audience notices everyday street signs or ready-made objects he presents together with the bicycle series. One can interpret his works as related to issues of environmentalism, education, urbanscape and other social issues. All works in this exhibition are the outcome of Eddi’s little reflection of daily life on the streets. As a biker, Eddi captures this phenomena with a different perspective. Bicycles are not merely a life style or romantic form that describes sub-urban class people, but also a tangible representation of the civil right to get better public facilities. The exhibition was open between March 31 and April 16, 2011 @ribosa

T

he ‘Returned’ series at Inkubator, Forme, on March 26 to April 15, 2011, finds its roots in Erianto’s experience as an artist who is considered “marginal” due to his residence in Padang, West Sumatra, far from the center of the Indonesian world of art. He has been lucky, often taking part in joint-exhibitions in the ‘centers’ such as Yogyakarta and Jakarta, whether it was by the invitation of galleries or artist groups. The works he displayed often returned to his studio in Padang because they had not been sold. One day, he found his works returned to Padang in a damaged package. The incident made him think that many works of art had not been treated well enough, or perhaps even with not enough respect. He had the idea to make paintings that resembled delivered packages, as a means to convey his criticism. To him, packages are important because they protect anything valuable from being damaged.

beatmag.com 066

Art

Erianto’s works show a fresh artistic approach, marrying paintings created through meticulous technique of photo-realism with (the impression of) objects in the form of cardboard packages. Some of them are even reinforced with wooden frames. There’s also warnings on the packages such as “Do Not Press”, “This Is a Painting”, “Export Quality”, “High Quality”, “Caution This Is Not Usual Package”, “Export Commodity”, “Expensive”, side by side with his personal jargon such as “Art is my institution” and “The Power of Feeling”, or such Indonesian proverbs as “A stork will always return to the pond”. Such cheesy writing might seem naive and innocent, until the audience senses a certain ambiguity and cynicism when seeing the text next to the symbols and logos. Erianto’s package paintings contain layered meanings because they are also related with art institutions in the world’s art centers, especially in North America and Europe, and their relationship with local art practices.

Suddenly we are faced with issues from the social realm of the Indonesian world of art in its relation with the global art map, the international world of art, and the market for mainstream artworks. Erianto makes fun of such conditions, thinking how works by Indonesian artists might have not been well-received, known, or even rejected by the world’s most-prominent art institutions such as the MoMA in New York, Saatchi Gallery, or Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction houses. Erianto’s criticism through his package paintings reflects the irony within the development of global art that is not in harmony with local conditions. Or perhaps it is the development of art on the local level that fails to adapt. @ribosa

Aries

Taurus

March 21 - April 20

April 21 - May 20

You will be feeling strong and selfassertive, much energy and determination will be devoted to achieving personal goals and ambitions. This may have been an attitude, a relationship or a job. The chance to meet someone more suitable can present itself, but don’t compromise too much. Keep moving forward until you can see where things are headed -- that ought to make it all easier on you. Psychologically and physically you can start to feel stronger and more up to take on life’s challenges and opportunities. Sometimes you are content to avoid the spotlight, quietly going about your business. But now you could realize that you need some appreciation. You will be boosted by relentless vitality and energy and you are likely to be in a positive and fun-loving mood.

All kinds of dilemmas will come clear - that previously you may have turned it into big issues. You may trade acceptance for self belief, switch off negative thoughts and change mindset. Be open to a new way of looking at things. Those with experience display wisdom. This is a good time to take control of your life and show others that you are serious. Your resolve will strengthen and problems will probably bounce off with little emotional worry. Someone or something you have been avoiding can now be tackled with renewed confidence. The planetary patterns help shake you out of complacency and you will feel a sense of excitement. The results of your efforts could come as a surprise and you cannot underestimate what you can make.

Cancer

Leo

June 22 - July 22

July 23 - August 22

Travel plans or a long distance project will power ahead and there will be a decisive development that pushes it forward at a steady rate. Research will be necessary if you want to stay ahead of the game. Do not spread yourself too thin. The call of far fields which looks so green is always strong for you personally and you are always ready to pioneer in any new line or go any new place in search for adventure. This is good time to gamble on your own skills with selfconfidence and parade any unusual ideas for personal satisfaction and sudden financial gains. You owe it to yourself to move with the times, update your look and lifestyle and follow through with what will make you happier, healthier and more at ease.

It is all about action and you ought to make sure that you’re moving ahead of the curve if at all possible. Don’t let the stress get to you because you can piece all the details together later. Throw yourself into it and you’ll begin to feel the acceleration of dedicated movement, the momentum building from entrained energy. If you know you’ve been neglecting your obligations because of what’s been going on now is the time to redress the balance. You will be able to make a positive difference if you only take a small amount of time to act on this now. Your projects progress without any major concerns, and your working methods prove effective. You’re moving slowly but surely towards great success.

Gemini May 21 - June 21 Life is about to take a more practical turn and you will crave peace, harmony and greater productivity. Planets give you greater clarity and allowing you to make plans for the immediate future. You may be drawn towards exotic people or locations, or there will be a sudden desire to broaden your horizons. The planets are trying to teach you lessons about patience, trust and how to shape your own destiny. Basically, the universe is giving you the chance to break out of your rut and learn something new. New panoramas open up and the planets encourage greater participation in life. There is a possibility you will allow someone trustworthy to take the lead or make decisions on your behalf.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 You are capable of much hard work, concentrating a great deal of energy and drive towards achieving goals and ambitions. Interference will not be tolerated. With some extra enthusiasm, a few cups of coffee, and some positive thinking, you’ll soon complete the tasks that are in front of you. And then you’ll feel great about all that you have accomplished! At work, you might need to stir things up a little bit. Volunteer to take over a new project. Or help someone else figure out the solution to a technical problem. You’ll want to use your imagination to create spontaneous responses. Now is the time to move let nothing get in the way. While it may seem like a whirlwind of activity for a while, the fruits of labor will show themselves soon. Don’t hesitate for a moment to dive right in.

Sagittarius

Sept 23 - Oct 23

Oct 24 - Nov 22

Nov 23 – Dec 21

Your outlook may be more philosophical than usual, allowing you to see both sides of an argument. If someone asks for your opinion but blatantly ignores any advice you offer, take a backward step. Action will speak louder than words. If you want to make your intentions clear, lead by example than talking yourself up. The planet helps break down communication barriers and provides you with plenty of insight into those around you. Be levelheaded but brave. Others will be happy to go along with your plans, provided you give some guarantees and avoid asking too many favours. There may be a change of direction for you or you will thrive on a mental or physical challenge.

You’re a natural communicator and possess a powerful energy that makes that quality even stronger. Make sure that you’re speaking with the right person or people and then get at the truth. Your way with words is perfect for expressing yourself, even if you’re not entirely sure what you’ll say until the conversation starts flowing. Things are great and you should find people receptive. You will find that when you connect with others, you are more motivated to make things happen for yourself. When you get the attention that you feel you deserve, your devotion will be strong. This may not seem like the best of advice, but saying an unflinching ‘yes’ to all manner of proposals that come your way, even if some of them are unclear.

Capricorn

Aquarius

Dec 22 - Jan 20

Jan 21 - Feb 18

Make a special effort when putting your point across, especially in personal and love relationships, or you are likely to be misunderstood. Also, beware squandering money on unnecessary items, which may seem luxurious now but will be completely useless in. Argument and conflicts may be hard to avoid. However, a solution could be to expend excessive aggression through hard physical work. Beware being accident-prone during this time. Verbal aggression could cause some problems. Feeling somewhat tetchy, fools will not be suffered gladly and anyone who provokes you, or who doesn’t meet your high standards, is likely to be subjected to cutting and sarcastic criticism.

A friend or family member just doesn’t get it. But because of the social circumstance you will simply have to accept awkwardness as part of the deal and say nothing. Don’t limit yourself by thinking narrow-mindedly. Let the electricity lighten up the atmosphere and give your attitude the jolt it needs to get back on target. Be open to new ideas. Look to those people who you gently chime with. If there are others where you’re not always sure of how they feel about you, these ties could cause some angst. Love affairs and creative projects tend to be friction-prone; you may be overly aggressive or premature. Take your risks carefully. Jealousy and possessiveness could cause conflicts in romance at the same time, heightened passions will increase your sex drive.

You would be best to steer clear of hostile people and avoid making provocative comments or digging your heels in. Gather all the facts connected to contracts and agreements before pledging your support, so take time to read the fine prints. There is some tension in the air, and your enthusiasm will only serve to annoy people, rather than charm them as it usually does. There’s no need to pout. This is just a temporary hiccup. Like it or not, you’re going to get teased about something. If you smile and take it, you’ll score major points with the right people, but if you get defensive, you’ll have to make up for it later. Don’t give up if it feels like you’ve come to an impasse on an agreement or plans you had regarding love or cash.

Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 You might be tempted to do one of two things: take your frustrations out on your lover, or bottle them up and cause your friend to worry. Don’t do either. Instead, tell your friend what’s going on, then both of you go to a movie. Money concerns can be had. Easily provoked and in a rather aggressive frame of mind, you will be convinced that the world is against you, and you will be tempted to start a fight at the first opportunity! By doing something new or visiting an exciting place, you’ll soon add zest to your romance. It will make you very impulsive and confrontational Don’t let your passion ride you, or your impulses, unless you want to find yourself all alone in front of your television screen, feeling sorry for yourself.

Tariq Amawi On the Bali shuffle

Here a rap, there a rap, everywhere a rap, rap. Move it and groove, talk it and soothe it, shake it and rake it, hope you don’t break it. Out of nowhere, suddenly everywhere, Tar Riq, a man on a mission wrapping it all up with sophisticated intelligence. Hey, stop the press folks, there’s a Flamenco Guitarist, and a very good one playing at night spots and hotels as well, here there and everywhere, one extreme to another, could they be one and the same? Text: Salvador Bali. S.B. Curtain time.

T. My name is Tariq Amawi and I go by the stage name Tar Riq because people kept on mispronouncing my name, so I wanted to have a stage name on paper. I’m twenty six years old, born in the Middle East, Jordan, however I shuttled around three continents my whole life, from Jordan to the United Kingdom. When I was six moved to America until I was ten, Houston, Texas, then back to Jordan. Then made the move to Bali.

S.B. That’s quite a game of ping pong; where was the educational background?

T. Education in the United Kingdom, comprehensive school for my GCSE’s, exams, then grammar school, then to the university where I studied 3D animation for three years, completing a masters degree.

S.B Where did the music come into play? So to speak, (Laughter) T. Well I’ve always been into art since I was really, young.

S.B. Were you very young when you were born

T. (Laughter). Yeah, I was the youngest I’ve ever been. (Laughter). When I was in grade one in America I entered a strict art competiton, I was writing poetry from the age of eight and my mother was an English teacher, so I constantly asked her, oh mom what does this word mean? Can you give me another way of saying it? I’m feeling upset or I’m feeling happy, and my vocabulary and my turn of phrase grew immensely, and so when I was fourteen, in Jordan, I entered a national writing competition and I wrote a poem for that

Feature and won first place. At the same time I went to an art exhibition and saw a Flamenco guitarist playing background music, I forgot all about the art which I had been into, and I was transfixed by the way this guy could move his hands on the guitar and the amount of energy and passion he was able to bring out of what looked to me a little wooded instrument. I went up to him and said, teach me how to play like you do. I think I said it with such a glint in my eye that he took me seriously. So he asked me to come to his music shop where he gave me lessons, I managed to have three lessons with him but he had to leave town. I practiced five to nine hours a day for two years, no social life whatsoever. A family friend, Marissa McClain said; “you’re pretty good at this guitar stuff, you should do something with it”. She contacted the Royal College of Music in London and persuaded them to hold an out of season audition for me. Two days later I got a call back saying if I wanted they would be awarding me a full scholarship. So for the next two years under the senior guitarist Charles (Raneviey) I defined my technique ten fold. Then at eighteen I had to make a decision, do I study music or pursue another avenue? I decided digital art was the next frontier for me. I did a masters degree in 3D animation, while playing at weddings and things on the side.

S.B. Where did the rapping come in?

T. Basically from these two extremes, one the guitar, the other poetry. When I won a poetry competition at eighteen it gave me the confidence to pursue that more seriously, but at the age of fourteen, being a pubescent boy trying to fit in and being seen as macho, poetry didn’t seem to be the right fit, so I started to channel it into raps.

S.B. Poetry in motion.

T. Yeah, the poetry started to become kinetic and hugely inspired by Eminem, the way he was able to put the rhymes, not just at the end of the sentence, but how he had lots of interplaying going on, metaphor and word play. It was a new benchmark for me and I would find the hardest tongue twisters I could find, repeating faster and faster until I could say them with ease. So they became professional hobbies, there was no professional aspirations at this point.

S.B. I would imagine you have an edge on the rapping with an academic writing and essays, dissertations and such, plus the musical background, in that sense I would venture to say, you’re pretty much in a class of your own. T. Thank you.

S.B. On that note (Laughter), being twenty six, you’re still a babe in the woods. T. So I’ve heard (Laughter), I keep getting told that.

S.B. You have a great future. Kicking that off, what brought you to Bali and doing it professionally?

T. The last two years have been serendipity upon serendipity, just a sequence of uncanny connections that have put me exactly where I am now, sitting on a degree in masters and 3D animation. So here I am free, no obligations, spoke to some friends and it was suggested to go to Bali. I had a friend here who said it was a very creative community and would have no problem getting along. I had no idea what Bali was. Done, and bought the ticket.

S.B. Sounds like you got the Bali bite (Laughter)

T. For sure, Bali has been instrumental with providing me with opportunities, the clarity of mind and the inner peace to do what I’ve been doing at the level I’m doing it.

S.B. What is you’re philosophy at this point?

T. I don’t want to come off as an ego manic.

S.B. No problem, toot your horn, life’s too short to be thinking small. T. I wanna be the next Eminem. This is my dream in life. I feel at the moment people who do lyrics, known as rappers, are angry or materialistic or negative, they’re preaching the wrong messages. The majority of them, through no fault of their own, and I’m not blaming them for that, coming from difficult backgrounds. The time has come for a new voice, someone who can come from an angle of positiveness and still have sharp, intelligent witty lyrics, but the message is not embittered, positive, uplifting, funny, and comedic.

S.B. What about writing songs and singing?

T. I really enjoy that, I do what I call custom wedding songs. I turn up on the wedding date, no pressure right (laughter) post cards are handed out to all the people having dinner and I ask them, can you please give me two or three bullet points about the couple getting married, inside information, make it funny or gossipy, not incriminating. We don’t want to embarrass them. I leave with the postcards for three hours and come back with a song which I then perform.

S.B. There you go, got to say I like this guy, signed, sealed and delivered. Chow mein, Salvador Bali

Food review

Bistro Batu Kali Jl. Laksmana #55, Seminyak. Tel: 806 0729

beatmag.com 084

New(ish) kid on the block and solid addition to the original ‘Eat Street’ scene, Bistro Batu Kali just goes to show that dining in Seminyak doesn’t have to be a compromise between quality and quantity. At one stage it looked like the unstoppable march of boutiques and villas would squeeze out the good value eateries along Jl. Oberoi, and there would certainly be no room for any more affordable yet quality restaurants. Bistro Batu Kali bucks this trend, presenting unpretentious and well-priced menu options that will more than satisfy both casual visitors and romantic diners alike. The tag line on the menus reads ‘welcoming new and old friends’, and judging by the inviting interior, bustling atmosphere and friendly staff I’d say this is pretty much spot on. The décor is pleasantly uncluttered, and the whole place has a charming ‘unfussy’ feel to it. Choose to dine at any of the simple tables dotted about, or

Food pull up a high stool at the bar for a more informal experience. The open-ended front looks right onto Jl. Oberoi, and sitting up front looking across the boardwalk terrace provides an excellent spot for people watching. Lunch hours are between 11am and 5pm, ample time to fuel up before a blitz around the boutiques, or a late lunch after a hard day’s window shopping. A selection of salads including the English spinach salad (30k+) and the Thai beef salad (35k+) compliment a luscious lineup of hearty sandwiches and more filling fare. Particular highlights include the chicken parmigiana (37k+) and the baby back pork ribs (69k+). Sliding into dinner time, Batu Kali offers a separate menu with plenty of appetizers, grills, pastas, mains and desserts to choose from. There is also an Indonesian food section, daily specials on the blackboard and a set menu option for just 99k+ that includes three courses. Deciding to perch up at the bar, I kick things off with a light rocket salad with pear and parmesan (35k+), followed by the delicious duck confit with potato gratin, sautéed green beans and orange jus (69k+). My friend and dining companion decides to go for the Australian stuffed tenderloin with pepper, onion and feta cheese (72k+), and I have to say after trading a few bites it’s difficult to pick a winner. On to dessert and being a mango fan I order up the mango pannacotta (25k+) while my friend goes for the triple chocolate cheesecake (25k+). It’s a solid three courses, each dish incredibly good value and with plenty on the plate to silence the rumbling stomach. Bistro Batu Kali is open every day until 11pm, and is a real asset to the food scene in Seminyak – welcome aboard! Dan Ashcroft.
