The Young And the
Professionals By Erza S.T.
For the last decade, Indonesia’s classical music landscape has been showing exciting growth each year. More and more new, talented young musicians are being discovered, especially in the fields of piano and vocals. Judging from the enthusiasm showing from both the young generation and the audience itself, Indonesia could perhaps soon catch up with other countries in South East Asia.

he young talent I am about to preview here does not come from the field of piano or vocal. Instead, he is a young violin player and his name is Giovani Biga. The 15 year old violin player seems to have an amazing musical talent. At such an early age, he’s already achieved some impressive acknowledgements, and recently was awarded with “The Most Outstanding Player Performance 2011” in the Indonesia Fun with Music Concert. He is also active performing with Addie MS’s Youth Twilight Orchestra under the guidance of Eric Awuy. On this coming May 7th, Biga is planning to perform his first solo concert ever at Usmar Ismail Hall. In this concert called ‘Another Dream’ and together with Batubita Chamber Orchestra under conductor Budi Ngurah, they will perform interesting programs from classic to even modern jazz compositions. The classical pieces will highlight among others work from Mozart (Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major), Pablo de Sarasate’s famous gypsy airs Zigeunerweisen, and Monti’s renowned Csardas - a favorite solo song amongst violinists of the world.
In this solo concert, Giovani Biga also wants to show his wide range of musicality, choosing a famous piece from jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea called ‘Spain’. This Grammy Award winning piece opens with an intro from the adagio of Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, before switching to a fast yet steady samba like rhythm. It is definitely a challenging piece to perform. From a young and talented violist, we move on to the professionals and a concert called ‘Beethoven Recital’ that will take place at Erasmus Huis on this upcoming May 12, 2011 presenting three accomplished musicians: Adelaide Simbolon Simanjuntak - pianist, Tomislav Dimov - violin and Leonard Van Hien. Together they will perform Beethoven’s great works featuring the Archduke Trio op. 97, Kreutzer Violin Sonata op. 47, and Cello Sonata in C Major op. 102/101. We have been quite lucky to have experienced some of Beethoven’s works lately, however not yet from a trio. I believe this recital is a must for those of you who enjoy serious chamber music.

What music are you into at the moment? Never for Ever by Kate Bush. What was the first record you bought - any interesting story behind it? Oo..lea…leo…!!! by Padhyangan Project, because when I was nine years old the album and the artist was so hyped. One of the most favourite local artists back then. What is your all-time favourite album? Why? Gling-Gló album by Björk, because I like all the strange sound in it. The Icelandic language and accent is so attractive and interesting for me. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Before I purchase any album, I always do a little research, read the reviews and listen to the single carefully, so I never end up buying bad records, I guess… hahaha... Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Hmmmm… Kate Bush hahaha... What song do you choose to start your weekend? "Swim" by Oh No Ono. And song you choose to end your weekend? "Local God" by Everclear.
After re-releasing her first solo album in March, Risa Saraswati performed her first solo concert a few days ago. Other than intensively promoting her new album, she’s also busy hosting a radio show in Bandung called ‘Rase Popcircle’.

Stay In In this era of mobile society, people are scattered out all over Jakarta carrying out their chores and doing endless activities. I’m sure you’ve had those days where you want to stay in. I hope this ultimate list of fun things to do at home will come in handy. (Dini Siregar)
Read a good book You’ve been dying to read that best-selling book that you bought months ago, but never had the time. Well, now is the time.
Play Rockband Staying home doesn’t mean you should be alone. You can ask friends to join you to form a fictional rock band and just, um, rock your heart out!
Cook for a group of people Nothing beats eating a good ol’ home-cooked meal with people you care about. But if you’re not that good a cook, don’t worry, if you’re cooking for family or good friends, they will certainly appreciate the effort - even if you do a Bridget Jones and turn everything blue.
Backyard Barbecue This is another way of cooking. But the fun part is, everybody can participate!

So you bought a stack of DVDs along with that book a few months ago. What are you waiting for? In the next 10 hours or so, you are free to drown yourself in some great flicks. Don’t forget the popcorn!
If this is your hobby, you’ll definitely have a lovely time in the great outdoors. If not, at least you’ll win brownie points from your better half.
Play some musical instruments Instead of playing Rockband, go with the real thing. I’m sure that guitar or keyboard you have at home gathering dust is dying to be played!
Exercise No need to go to the gym to do this. Do some crunches, jump rope, push-ups, or sit-ups in the comfort of your own home.
Re-arrange your furniture Re-arranging your furniture will make your room feel brand new. It’s also fun! Make sure you’ve asked permission from the missus first, though.
Play board games If you don’t have a gaming console, you can always go old school. Prove to everyone that you’re not too old to play board games.
The World Wide Web This point is blatantly obvious, but still has to be listed. Surfing the Internet is never boring. Whatever you want, whatever you need, and I mean whatever, just type and click. Try beatmag.com for example.
Try these options also; look through old pictures, call an old friend, make a home video, or make your own list of fun things to do for the next time you decide to stay in! 041 beatmag.com

MAMA
There is always a different story in every parenting style. That is the slogan of The Urban Mama blog, founded by several long-time bloggers who also happen to be mostly Jakarta based mums. The idea is simple; parents who are subscribers of the blog share their stories. If you are already a parent or soon-to-be one, this is the site you want to check out. The Urban Mama provides useful information and tips on parenthood starting from parenting style, pregnancy info, book reviews, kid friendly recipes, ideas for children’s birthday parties, and other interesting takes on parenting for young and hip modern mums (also dads!). The founders of The Urban Mama have a lot of experience with activities that other mums could use with their kids. There’s the ‘baking playdate’ where you and your kids basically bake cakes or cookies with friends (various recipes are provided in the recipe section). Or you can explore Jakarta with your kids using public transportation such as the Transjakarta, where you can teach them about the history of their hometown.

Also, you won’t want to miss the Style section. Getting to dress up your little darling is one of the joys of parenthood before they get too old. Think adorable kebayas for children or fun costumes for Halloween. Or you can be creative and make costumes, accessories, and cute knick-knacks yourself, based on the do-it-yourself section of the blog. It’s well known that you cannot separate mums from shopping, so the Urban Mama blog also provides tons of information on things you can buy (parenthood and children related, of course!), simply called the Mama’s Mall. Clothes, accessories for babies and children, toys, maternity instruments, you name it they’ve got it. All I can say that if you’re not a parent yet, you will want to be one after exploring this very attractive blog. Go check it out, mamas. Papas are welcome too! (Dini Siregar) http://theurbanmama.com

ndonesia’s rockabilly ambassadors, The Hydrant, are back in full swing. After more than a year since releasing Bali Bandidos, the pompadour contingent have come back dandy and fully pomaded via their latest album, Dirty Thirty. The Bali quartet with the latest formation Marshello (singer, harmonica), Wis (guitar), Adi (contra bass) and Christopher (stand up drum), have a specific reason naming the album Dirty Thirty. The motor of the band, Wis and Shello, just turned the age of 30 years old and both agreed to step into the phase of being "dirty" to rock 'n' roll attitude which is getting married and having kids.
beatmag.com 044
This is the third full-length album for them since forming on August 14, 2004; and the album consists of 9 songs which are devoted to Americana and rockabilly-o-rama. The lyrics still talk about social issues ("Race to Nowhere" and "Boogie Cadillac") and the love, dynamic life of the personnel ("Wild Wild Boy", "My Baby", "Don't Cry"). They also have one guest guitarist, Krisna, participating in the swing-infected song, "Shake, Rhythm & Jive". Meanwhile Wis experiments a bit with Yngwie Malmsteen-cum-rockabilly in "Kuta Beach Terror" plus an instrumental composition, "The Outlaw Song". An album for all rockers not to miss. [RUDOLF DETHU]

Paguyuban pria pompadour, the Indonesia’s rockabilly ambassadors, datang kembali menggedor. One-two-three Dirty Thirty! Shake, rhythm and jive, pretty baby!

marapura is a Balinese restaurant located in the heart of the Tebet area. A typical Balinese gate welcomed our arrival, with the lush greenery adding a certain dramatic touch to the place. The traditional Balinese music playing in the background meant we felt like we were transported to the island of the gods. “Om Swastyastu…” said the waitress as we entered this semi-outdoor eatery. There are no walls or windows blocking our view. No ceiling as well. The high roof keeps the air flowing nicely, keeping diners relatively cool. There is a small children’s pool in the back of the restaurant and there are also some traditional-style ‘bales’ where you can enjoy your meal sitting cross-legged. Very nice. Balinese food is known to be somewhat spicy, and the beautiful blending of herbs and spices adds a certain richness to their taste. Our lovely waitress suggested some of the favourites at Smarapura. They have a Balinese buffet with quite a number of items to choose from, and with a very affordable price of Rp 35k, it is a great deal for those who want to sample some of the island’s specialities like ayam betutu, sate lilit, sate sampi, plecing buncis and tum nangka. Do not forget the five kinds of sambal to give your meal a certain zing. Their sambal matah is one of the best we’ve tasted. All food, do not fret. Smarapura also has some local Indonesian favourites like soto ayam, soto betawi, the items here are also available individually. or laksa bogor (all 25k). The Long and Winding Road
A must-visit restaurant in Tanjung Priok – Kelapa Sunda
Text and Photos: D Trauts
Kelapa Sunda restaurant is an institution in north Jakarta. It has
been there, right on the edge of the Tanjung Priok docks, for 40 years plus and is famous all over the country as one of the most interesting Indonesian dining experiences in town. It’s also the place to find some of the best speciality fish dishes that the restaurant has been perfecting for many generations. Kelapa Sunda is not easy to find, hidden down the back roads and right in the docklands, but it’s well worth the effort if you can find it. By no stretch of the imagination you could ever call Kelapa Sunda fancy. The dining area looks like it’s a converted boat shed with low ceilings and rudimentary dining tables and benches. The light curtains hanging on the windows give a predominantly seventies feel to the decor. Some tables

Food are so long they could fit 30 people - perfect for those large family get-togethers. No, it’s not fancy but it is real, and that would be one key to it being a success for over 40 years. So what makes it real? Just like any restaurant worth its salt, it comes down to the food. Seafood is the main protagonist and Kelapa Sunda has a few of its own twists (and I do mean that literally) on some old favourites. The fried Carp (gurame sedang, 40k) came out standing on its tail with each side fillet supporting the fish in an upright position on the plate. The twisting fillets were fried stiff and delightfully crunchy on the outside, while the meat was tender and moist on the inside. The dish of squid (cumi telur, 35k) came to the table with the whole bodied squid filled with egg and other squid parts stuffed inside and then chopped into rings with a spicy sauce that makes this dish so delicious. The piece de resistance had to be the over-sized prawns (udang gelah, 170k portion) that were boiled in the shell and served with a light, but like most sauces at Kelapa Sunda, rich sauce. These beauties from the estuaries of Sumatra are monsters and I don’t think I’ve tasted a tastier crustacean in Indonesia - succulent and rich in flavour. One trick that my host showed me is the act of breaking the top shell away on the head of the creature and scooping out the molten brains. Not for the light-hearted and the taste is strong, but I am assured it is good for you... somewhere. Two plate loads of crab (kepitang telor, 120k/ portion) arrived next, all cracked open and separated making the going easier for the crab lovers on the table. Klangkung, rice and a very interesting sambal were the accompaniments. plus 10% tax as they state on the bottom of the Needless to say, we walked out of there stuffed page. Our dinner arrived in copious amounts and for four people including non alcoholic drinks to the gills. the total price was just over Rp 1 million. Pricing is a alone it was worth every rupiah. little mysterious as they don’t have prices stated Take the long and winding road to Kelapa Sunda on the menu but work on a market value system yourself some day, it’s quite an experience. 055 beatmag.com

epper Lunch is a simple yet cozy family restaurant. When you enter, a blown up image of the menu is displayed outside for you to help make your choice easier. As the original Japanese DIY Teppan Restaurant, it offers a unique dining experience where you get to cook your own dish, the way you like it. The dishes at Pepper Lunch come on a hot plate heated to 260 degrees and the sizzling sounds of your meal are truly a multi-sensory experience! A fun addition that makes a trip to Pepper Lunch that much more fun is the moment you sit down, you can check out cooking instructions, played on the TV screens. Guests are also free to add their own condiments according to their liking, from freshly ground pepper to two kinds of special sauces (Garlic Soy sauce and Honey Brown sauce). Every item on the menu uses premium quality ingredients, such as selected grass fed beef from Australia and New Zealand, salmon from Norway, unagi (eel) from Taiwan, scallops and squid from the USA, plus many others and all ingredients are under strict supervision to ensure the best quality. We started with their best selling dish Pepper Steak (Rp 75.455). The steak meat is topped with a special butter and served with vegetables. The meat is served partially raw on the sizzling hot plate which slightly cooks it as you take your seat. The meat is extremely juicy, especially when cooked to medium and complemented with the Garlic Soy Sauce, it is simply heavenly.
quite simple, but very tasty. Similar to this dish is the Unagi (eel) Pepper Rice (Rp 53.636) which is another popular item here. Meat lovers are definitely in for a treat at Pepper Lunch with its many of choices of meat to choose from; from the aforementioned Pepper Steak to the “Big” Rib Eye Steak (Rp 95.455), to Hamburger Steak with Egg (Rp 54.545), and even Wagyu Yakiniku (Rp 75.455), just to name a few. And for a unique twist, they also serve some “Japanese” pasta dishes on the hot plate, such as the Seafood Aglio Olio (Rp 57.273), Salmon Cream Pasta (Rp 60.909), and Beef Bolognaise Pasta with Sausage (Rp 57.273). To compliment your meal, by paying an extra Rp 14.545, you’ll get a glass of your choice of beverage plus a choice of side dishes (white rice, miso soup, mashed potato, or ice cream). Don’t forget to try the Shake Shake salads of Wakame (seaweed), spicy tuna, or sesame chicken. For a sizzling dining experience, give Pepper Lunch a try. It is equally good any time of day. Yes, you have to ‘cook’ it yourself, but hey, it’s not every day you have a treat like this, right? (Budi Iskandar)
We also ordered the Salmon Pepper Rice (Rp 54.545). The slices of fresh salmon are served with rice, corn, and diced spring onions which is

Lunla Man (Pu Chai Lulla) Comedy, Romance. Director: Tunya Potiwijit. Cast: Chakrit Yamnam, Jeab Chern-Yim, Passorn Bunyakiet, Mum Jokmok, Ussanee Wattana.
Been enjoying the run of Thai comedy films lately? Don’t think it’s over yet, because you’re going to find another original Thai laugh-cracker in this slightly adult comedy romance. Three perverted married guys think that they’ve come up with ingenious ways of not getting caught cheating every night with women who are not their wives. However, the savvy wives know exactly what’s going on, and team up to wreak some sneaky revenge. Watch this funny film with your spouse, and learn to come up with some better excuses!
Don’t Go Breaking My Heart Romance, Comedy. Directors: Johnnie To, Wai Ka-Fai. Cast: Louis Koo, Yuanyuan Gao, Daniel Wu, Lin Xue, Terrence Yin.

Nah! If you’ve been longing for a good Mandarin rom-com movie, then ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ is just the right option for your movie date, and also to see how much Hong Kong is like our own Asian New York city. The movie has an original non-Hollywood twist on an eternal love triangle, where discreet crushes and unrequited love take on an altogether new theme, resulting in an entertaining Cantonese romantic comedy.

Max Factor Arrives
in Indonesia!
Max
Factor has officially arrived in Indonesia, which becomes their 76th market worldwide. The name Max Factor is almost as famous as the word makeup itself. In fact, according to the brand fact sheet, it was Max Factor who coined the term “make up” in 1920. The brand was founded in 1909 by Max Factor who then created some of the most iconic products in the beauty industry. From lipgloss to pancake foundation to matte lipstick, I think it’s safe to say that Max Factor is indeed a pioneer and a very important figure and brand in makeup history. In 2006, the legendary Pat McGrath, the Global Creative Design Director of P&G, joined as an artistic supporter behind Max Factor, helping to create new products inspired by the runway. While in Indonesia, Max Factor chose celebrity makeup artist, Gusnaldi to be their brand ambassador. I had a chat with Fabio Stefani, Director for Max Factor Asia, during the press launch, where he talked about Max Factor in Indonesia, their partnership with Gusnaldi and of course, product recommendations!
beatmag.com 060
Hi Fabio! Congratulations on the launch of Max Factor. We’ve been waiting for quite some time for it to happen! Thank you, that’s really nice to hear. So there are quite a few makeup artist brands in Indonesia already, how are you planning to position Max Factor differently from those brands? Well, you’ll get an international brand with international know-how but we’re partnering with some of the best local talents. So what we have is a brand that has heritage, innovation, research and development and we’re complimenting the local talents with that background. When we work with Gusnaldi it’s really about local relevance but with international credentials, so that’s what makes us different. A lot of other brands focus on celebrities, but Max Factor is more than ever about service and relevance. The Max Factor make up artists serve as a window of information to customers about the latest and coolest trends from backstage.
Style
Could you explain a little bit more about your collaboration with Gusnaldi? Sure. There are a very defined set of expectations we have for our employees, so Gusnaldi will be training the beauty consultants, doing outposts and roadshows, coming to events like today, helping to create local trends, doing advertorials. We know that we need to work with Gusnaldi and most importantly, Gusnaldi is inspired and motivated to work with us. That’s the first thing that I look for when we work with makeup artists, how genuinely excited they are with the brand. If they are, then you have a truly great partnership, and ever since I met him for the first time, I felt that. Sounds like a great collaboration! So when you said “creating local trends” what do you mean by that? What I refer to is you take the existing assortment but you localize the end benefit to visualise what the local customer wants. However, we do have an R&D team based in Beijing which channels only Asia. They already came to Indonesia to look at the skin tone and there are plans to introduce Asiaspecific products.
You came to Indonesia and introduced your False Lash mascara as the first product. Any reason why? Of course. Generally, you’ll have to go with your strength. If somebody were to put up a gun to my head and ask me what our best product is, I would say mascara. The technology that we have is such that I would have the confidence to tell you that we have mascaras that are the best you’ll ever use. Last question, and I just have to ask you this, what Max Factor products do you think every woman should have in their makeup bag? I would say False Lash Effect mascara for a big round lashes, Miracle Touch foundation because it’s been pleasing so many women around the world and lastly I would say, Lipfinity Colour and Gloss. We have a heritage with long wear lip colour. This is an interesting long wear product that also gives you the appearance of gloss. And stick around because in the next 12 months, we’re going to launch some more exciting products in Indonesia.

hen leather riding jackets can be combined with fringes and manage to look ever so stylish, it’s beyond words, don’t you think? The first part of the show was dominated by colour blocking, which I truly couldn’t wait to see. I love how the combination of colours unfolded one by one. It looked so alive and rich. The golden accented heels and belt made the look even more glamorous and really gelled the whole thing together. The second part had a tinge of tribal to it. My favourite look had to be a leather jacket with fringes combined with suede jodhpur pants and finished with a belt with tassels detail. On its own the pieces already make a statement, the idea of combining them together might sound catastrophic, but only by seeing it you can believe how this monochromatic look can work! My second choice was a tube dress with a thick belt that defines the waist but since it’s in the same colour it didn’t interrupt the flow of the look. ramusHuis Jakarta is holding an enamel advertising exhibition entitled ‘A layer of the history of modern advertising in Indonesia’ until June 17, 2011. This exhibition presents a number of unique enamel advertising pieces, a type of advertising medium used widely in Europe during the late 19th century. This is a presentation of trade advertising, fine art and graphic design that existed and flourished in Indonesia. Irfan Ramli, from the Indonesian Advertising Agency Association, officiated the opening night that showcased 105 retrospective enamel ads from the Kartini Collection. The collection features a number of unique enamel objects showing the efforts of manufacturers and designers to

communicate with the Indonesian public by trying to understand various socio-cultural aspects. In short, the European enamel concept was quickly adapted and given a local touch. Hauw Ming, from the Kartini Collection, commented on the invaluable history of this exhibition, especially the Indonesian creativity and history of trade, art, advertising and graphic design. These enamels once accompanied the journey of Indonesia in the early 20th century. Enamel as an advertising medium finally became extinct, defeated by the excitement, cheapness and speed of offset printing techniques. Almost simultaneously throughout the world at the time

of World War II enamel ads disappeared because the metal making and industrial facilities had to be mobilized to serve the needs of war. The enamels in this exhibition are all that remains of this bygone era. Today, these may seem trivial artifacts. However, these enamels can be used as a starting point to examine the various details of the journey of the Indonesian history of trade, advertising, urban community life and lifestyles of the past. All in all a fascinating insight into a unique period of advertising history. @ribosa

That is the main idea behind the ‘Sin City’ exhibition at Galeri Nasional, Gambir, from April 8 to 17, 2011. The title itself alludes to Frank Miller’s comic (not the casino city) reminiscing about the sinner’s main victim: the earth. Some of the earth evangelists that participated are Tisna Sanjaya, Amalia Kartikasari, Eddy, Heri Dono, Recycle Experience and Komunitas Atap Alis. plastic down to a fine grain was built to illustrate how difficult it is to dispose of plastic waste. Amalia Kartikasari’s anti-television woodframed mixed media ‘To Control or to be Controlled’ depicts blaring TV screens that illustrate that television is a visual pollution. Heri Dono’s ten minute video, ‘Scapegoat Republic’, takes a different approach. He plays a politician at a podium in front of an audience of goats. It sends a message that politicians and government officials are taking advantage of the uneducated. The exhibition warns humanity that they have committed terrible sins against the environment and call the viewer’s attention to environmental issues through their work. The Rebirth of the Indie Party If
By Rusty Shackleford
you’ve been paying any attention to the news or the plethora of blogs about Bali, there’s a lot of talk these days about how the island has lost its way. It reflects a certain attitude among the visitors and locals alike that perhaps the rush to build things that are bigger and cater to the wealthy elite is perhaps ruining a place that built its reputation as a beautiful carefree hangout. Everything is trending towards this. The nightlife here is no exception. Way back in the day, when hair metal ruled the world of rock and Made’s Warung was the closest thing to authentic Western food you could find on this side of the archipelago, going out in Bali pretty much went along the same lines it did today. Tourists hung out in the imaginary tourist line South of Jalan Melasti (Kuta) and expat hang

outs were found north of this enduring boundary. The expat scene was pretty much a collection of small but lively bars and clubs that very much characterized the hippie roots of the old Bali expats. Flash forward to the time when grunge was pretty much dead and Made’s Warung had a few more competitors, money began to flow into the island and the trend of the nightlife scene here became ever more profitable and with that came bigger and fancier clubs. Just about every club owner sought to make their establishment sleeker and more modern. Thanks to the enormous profits made on charging a lot more for drinks, this seemed the way to go. More operators poured into the island trying to exploit all the economic possibilities, these new arrivals represented a broader cross section of society and
Feature
supplanted the original hippies. For those newly arrived expats, Bali gave them a luxurious lifestyle unaffordable in most countries; their partying habits reflected their newfound socio-economic class and pushed the local nightlife industry further into the realm of yuppie culture. This trend, once a small segment of the party scene in Bali, became the standard. Soon, it was nearly impossible to wear the casual clothes you once wore during the 80s and 90s; you actually had to dress up to go out unless you wanted to fraternize out with bogans and backpackers in Kuta. It seemed as if every club owner north of the tourist line, was making something to specifically market to these people willing to dress up in collared shirts and heels and spend money on drinks with substantial mark ups. Some of these were well financed successes, some were not. It seemed like no matter what kind of budget they had to build a bar or club, they would go for something high end. All these clubs would invariably play the same electro progressive their targeted clientele seemed to not get enough of. The backlash to this wave of high society seeking establishments was a sprinkling of places where just about anybody could dress however they wanted, hang out, drink and try to get lucky. Black Dog and Home had this formula down. It can be argued that other places can easily replicate what Black Dog and Home had; all you need is a cheap place that serves alcohol. But the thing that set Black Dog and Home apart from every other dingy bar was that it was actually cool to go to these places. Plus the music was different. Yes, Home and Black Dog are faded memories now, the victims of the indie roots which spawned them. But the scene continues on, there seems to be a resurgence of this indie phenomenon that emerged in the last two years. A place like the Cave which
tries to break the mold of luxury to make a club so primordial seems to have a healthy following. La Plancha has also become the premiere party spot on some Fridays for those who want a carefree beach party. The Disko Afrika parties are also going strong. On Sundays, they’re regular reggae parties at the Crystal Palace on the beach and Home is coming back with their nomadic Love InTents. These places stress having casual fun over the pretense of smart casual attire and unreasonably expensive cocktails. Sadly, these parties and places don’t promote all that much, so for the hapless newcomer, it’s all a bit hit and miss finding the right place at the right time… So happy hunting folks, the old, casual times are out there somewhere and (here’s a clue) mainly around beach areas. Thankfully, there’s still something for everyone on this island. You have the choice; dress up or dress down as you please - but I’m not so sure it’s a new concept ‘cause it’s always been here.

Warisan
Food review
Not many restaurants in Bali can claim to have true heritage, but Kerobokan institution Warisan has been delighting diners for almost 20 years now.
Warisan Jl. Raya Kerobokan #38. Tel: 0361 731175 www.warisanrestaurant.com

Food
After last year’s brief hiatus where the premises underwent a full renovation, the restaurant with the original rice paddy view is back with a new name, ownership, chef, and décor, but with the same quality, peace and tranquility that has made it famous for the last almost 20 years. Upon entering the huge premises located on Jl. Kerobokan, the feeling is less that of walking into a restaurant, and more like a luxury villa. Delightfully and tastefully appointed, three large spaces surround the main dining area featuring areas for furniture (Warisan Living), antiques and a boutique, adding to the homely feel of the place. A central courtyard is flanked on three sides, leaving diners to gaze across the rice fields of Petitenget. Although there has been much development over the years, the view remains fittingly serene and a great accompaniment to the cuisine. A decidedly Mediterranean affair, French chef Vincent (previously of the famed White Box in Phuket) has put together a lunch and dinner menu with something for everyone, from light snacks like salads, soups and carpaccio, to sandwiches and pastas, fine quality steaks to seafood and desserts. It’s simply amazing how, despite the busy road out front, the dining area is so quiet. Something of a sanctuary even, and I order up a fresh lychee and lime granita whilst chilling out on the comfy chairs and enjoying the soft breeze. My friend arrives and follows suit, and we set about
dissecting the menu. Choosing what to have proves to be a tough task – this is one of those menus where everything sounds good – but eventually we manage to decide on a couple of starters. The crispy gyoza stuffed with a fusion of snail and shitake mushroom drizzled with a garlic butter emulsion (65k++) absolutely does not disappoint, with a delicious mix of textures and flavours that doesn’t touch the sides. I take it from the silence across the table that neither does the Jimbaran seafood salad (75k++). On to the mains and it’s even more of a conundrum, so we decide to continue on the seafood route, settling on the crispy barramundi with sautéed spinach and lemon foam porcini saffron cream and polenta (99k++), and the linguine seafood (65k++) respectively. It’s well known that any fish is generally good on Bali, but here the delicate flavours and layered textures work to fantastic effect with the tender fruits de mer. Suitably stuffed, we decide to give ourselves some time to let the mains go down before splitting a chocolate contrast (65k++) for dessert. Made up of a chocolate ganache with cacao sorbet and cacao snow, it’s pure chocolate decadence and finishes off the meal in superb fashion. Warisan is open for lunch and dinner every day except lunch on Sundays. With one of the best culinary experiences going around town, here’s to the next 20 years at this Bali dining institution!
