First off, we would like to congratulate Gugun Blues Shelter from Jakarta for winning the worldwide Hard Rock Battle of the Bands competition that was decided by social media voting and announced on the Hard Rock website last weekend. Apparently, it was a land-slide win for Gugun, with second place far behind. Gugun, who is probably one of the best guitarists on the planet, is sure to knock the socks off all at the Hard Rock Calling event in London in June with his blistering guitar riffs and solos. Good luck to him and the band. Also on the horizon is the first Sundaze event of the year which will see Epicentrum Walk, Kuningan transformed into a rave party destination for the club enthusiasts. Don’t think the head bangers of the capital have been forgotten either, as some of the best metal bands of the nation are set to converge on Bulungan near the end of the month. All this and more can be found in this edition of TBJ, so keep it close and enjoy the next fortnight to come.

DJ Larry Satrio LUV’S Bar & Dine | Fri 20 May | 10PM Sounds Like House, electro, prog house Hails From Jakarta, Indonesia
Has Been As a music operator at Entertainment X’Center, DJ Larry was fascinated by the allure of progressive, tribal and house music since. A year after quitting his job, Larry went on to seek his luck as a DJ. By mixing and matching different music genres, he finally found the style he was looking for in progressive and electro house, creating a signature sound that has earned him a solid fanbase. Thanks to his musical mixing abilities, Larry landed a spot as Red Square’s resident DJ before going on to become the event consultant and head DJ of the club. Larry was also one of the founders of Red Addict Management and DJ School with his partners at Red Square, but he left all that behind to find something new on the island of the gods, Bali. is Now After his long hiatus from the Jakarta party scene, Larry is returning to his home town after his walkabout in Bali. Larry will be entering the DJ booth at LUV’s Bar & Dine for an event dedicated to those born under the zodiac sign of Taurus called ‘Taurus Soundsation’. Resident DJs Nathalie, Vinny Liv, and Wachitarica will also be there to keep things fresh, not forgetting the regular LV C&C models fashion show that are always featured in every LUV’s event.

David Tort Illigals | sat 21 May | 10PM Sounds Like House, techno house Hails From Barcelona, Spain Has Been Beginning his DJ career back in ’88 immediately after graduating from High School, David played a range of different genres such as acid house, new beat, EBM and techno. He didn’t try his hand at house music until ’98 when he finally saw the light thanks to a new passion he found after messing around with drum machines and synth elements from an Atari video game console. In 2000 David released his first album, but not before he became a full-fledged producer aided by his trusty Apple computer. He is also known for such music productions as ‘Changes’, ‘Work it out’ and his remixes for big name DJs like David Guetta, Tiesto and Bob Sinclair. David has also been lucky enough to be the first Spanish DJ to be invited for an exclusive party at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills. Lucky fella.
is Now David Tort released the track ‘Jack It Up’ earlier this month, and his track ‘Chase the Sun’ which he worked on alongside Norman Doray, sat nicely at the #2 position on beatport.com for three weeks. Jakarta’s party people will get the chance to see David Tort perform live on stage when he heads to Illigals Club on the 21st of May.

DJ Kay Jay Flirt Bar, Fashion Hotel | sat 21 may | 10PM Sounds Like House Hails From Baltimore, USA Has Been Kristin Jackson (DJ Kay Jay to you and I) is a steamy sensation who began her career in the limelight as a model thanks to her outstanding looks and body to match. Because of her admirable, ahem, assets she was even chosen to pose in Playboy magazine long before she discovered her passion for dance music. Beginning her musical journey by performing at several of her hometown clubs, she went on to move from event to event, from city to city which eventually brought her across the pond to Europe to share the decks with big name DJs including Enferno, Benji & Joel Madden, Junior Sanchez and Colleen Shannon. Mastering the skills to combine hip hop with elements of rock, and adding an 80’s style into her mix (not forgetting to spice things up with commercial house beats and old school rhythms), she is able to create a unique sound to her sets. It can’t be denied, DJ Kay Jay is a clubland angel with the ability to spin with the best of ‘em. is Now Jakarta is the next destination for this sultry DJ and she’ll be presenting her hard hitting rhythms at Flirt Bar which is located inside Fashion Hotel. Besides this DJ Kay Jay, resident DJs Igo and Astrid will be there to kick things off in style before the main event.
Has Been Kristin Jackson atau lebih dikenal dengan nama panggungnya DJ Kay Jay, adalah seorang wanita cantik yang lebih dulu terjun ke dunia model berkat wajah cantik dan body-nya yang tidak kalah indah. Berkat inilah dia sempat tampil dalam majalah Playboy sebelum dia menemukan hasrat barunya terhadap musik dance. Fat Boy Slim Grand Ballroom Central Park | wed 8 june | 7PM Sounds Like Big beat, electronica, house Hails From Brighton, UK Has Been Norman Quentin Cook was born Quentin Leo Cook in Surrey, England, but is better known as hit machine DJ Fatboy Slim. Retro 80’s music fans will definitely have heard of the band Housemartins, and long before he assumed the Fatboy Slim persona, he was a backup bassist for that band. After his run with the Housemartins ended, Norman began his career as a studio engineer which until today he has continued to maintain. He then went on to form an electronic music group called Beats International, creating the hit single ‘Dub Be Good To Me’ in ’89. Several years later, he formed another group, this time with vocalist Ashley Slaterto from Freak Power with their catchy tune ‘Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out’. He then went solo under the alias Pizzaman, releasing the highly popular ‘Pizzamania’ album before finally evolving into the fat boy that we know and love today. During his career, Norman has been lucky enough to work with big name artists such as U2, Madonna, the Beastie Boys plus many others. Under the Fatboy Slim guise, Norman had his biggest hit with ‘The Rockafeller Skank’, topping charts and even becoming the theme song for the FIFA 99 videogame. Other notables include ‘Right Here Right Now’ and ‘Praise You’. is Now After a very long period of anticipation, Fatboy Slim is finally making his way to Jakarta on the 8th of June. Promoter Urbanite Asia, known for its many successful rave parties will feature this highly rated DJ at Central Park Jakarta. Don’t miss this very rare opportunity to join thousands of partygoers grooving to the sounds of Brighton’s finest.

On, Tune In, Cop Out’. What music are you into at the moment? Lately, I've been diggin' some mixtapes and podcasts. I like the mixes from www. maddecent.com records, which is owned by the super-producer, Diplo. They have some reggae/dubstep/Baltimore/dancehall style in their sets/mixtapes. Kinda mash up really... But you know, I still love all my music collection, sometimes I listen to it over and over again. Mostly the Jamaican stuff, whether its reggae, ska, Jamaican soul 'n funk to raggamuffin. What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? I don’t really remember, probably Alpha Blondy. Well you know, I lived in Kuta, Bali, during the 90's, and you could hear Alpha Blondy along the the Kuta streets played by those old-school dreadlock guys. I was curious as a kid, because Alpha was singing in French or African in some of his songs. And I was thinking; who's this guy with the sweet voice singing in a strange language? What is your all-time favourite album? Why? Bob Marley Legend. I know it's very common, same ol' same ol', to quote Legend as your favourite album. But, for me it's more than just a reggae album. It has a wide range of music and also topics. In this album, Bob Marley is influenced by so much American music: funk, soul, rock, and even pop. Meanwhile, the lyrics contain so many things, from love to society, also rebellion and movement that build awareness amongst the people. The songs in the album, as we all know, each and every one of them is a classic. What was the worst record you ever purchased? The worst… hmm… aint got one. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, the next time you reincarnate? Ravi Shankar. What music do you choose to start your weekend? Something upbeat, ruff and dirty like The Aggrolites or Major Lazer. And song/album you choose to end your weekend? Chill out stuff, lazy Sunday at home and hangover, from the likes of Norah Jones, Bob Dylan or Jack Johnson.
At the moment Heru is in the studio preparing Shaggydog's next album. With his other project, Dubyouth, he plans to release a fulllength album in June. He is also doing a solo European tour in July supporting Chinese Man, a French DJ collective. 039 beatmag.com

Luky Annash: 180ยบ dan Bernas beatmag.com 040

P
Ia menjadi additional keyboardist bagi beberapa kongsi musisi misalnya The Brandals, godmustbecrazy, serta Tika and the Dissidents. After playing classical piano since he was as young as 12 years old, Luky Annash ended up going down the 90’s music path rather than sticking to the classical tunes. Nirvana and Tori Amos give him more freedom for interpretation than Mozart and baroque compositions where he felt limited. In 2005, the younger brother of Eka and Rully Annash (The Brandals), made up his mind, and decided to dive in completely in contemporary music and starting to join bands like The Brandals, Godmustbecrazy, and Tika and the Dissidents. Finally, in April 2011 he released his debut album called ‘180º Under Demajors’ in which he talks a lot about life’s adventures and how things can be changed 180º if you are willing to accept both the dark and the bright side. The influence of his favorite artists like Tori Amos, Harry Nilsson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Björk, Apparat, Phillip Glass, Danny Elfman - even Slayer and Motörhead - can be heard on the album. COSPLAY JAKARTA
ROLE-PLAYING IN COSTUMES I’m
sure people around the globe are already familiar with Halloween and Mardi Gras, even though here in Indonesia those celebrations are not really a part of our cultural. But Cosplay is another thing. Cosplay (short for costume play), is a performance art where people wear costumes (mostly homemade) to represent characters that are originally drawn from popular fiction in Japan. I know what you’re thinking, it’s embarrassing to be parading around in bizarre outfits in front of a bunch of strangers, but bear with me. In terms of goal, that’s what is all about, it is expected that Cosplayers be much more in character and adhere meticulously to the character represented, so Cosplayers are usually very dedicated to their work. Characters played are not limited only to Japanese Anime or Manga - they are adapted from the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and also Star Trek characters in parts of the world. Now, people all over the world are also adapting this form of art successfully, including here in Indonesia. Even Indonesian culture characters are now famously used in the implementation of Cosplay, such as Wiro Sableng and Si Buta dari Gua Hantu. Cosplay events are so popular among photographers that now a new style of photography has been born as a result. According to Wikipedia, this
beatmag.com 044
form of photography is a combination of fashion photography and portrait photography where both the clothing and portraiture are the main subject. Not just a hobby for photographers, they are now often hired at Cosplay events to document the weird and wonderful outfits. Now landing in Jakarta, the Cosplay Competition @ Little Tokyo Ennichisai 2011 runs from July 24 - 25, and will be held at Blok M. The competition will be judged based on video and live action stage performances. Other than that, about a couple of hundred food stands will be there. Also on July 24th, the first international event will be held at Balai Kartini, titled Cosplay Live Action Show Hybrid, or in short, CLASH. Hangry & Angry—a Japanese pop/rock duo will be the guest stars at the show. To top that, Alodia Gosiengfiao (famous cosplayer, model, and artist from the Philippines), Mark Musashi (Japanese martial artist), and other famous people yet to be revealed are going to be the judges for the competition. Batavia Madrigal Singers without a doubt is one of Indonesia’s finest choirs, having won numerous awards and received international recognition. Over 14 years, this choir has constantly thrust Indonesia into international limelight off the back of their angelically beautiful voices. In this coming concert, the Batavia Madrigal Singers (BMS) will present a few 20th Century compositions that are modern, fresh and full of spirited harmony. To show the scope of their collective ability, the singers will perform in various forms - from solo piano, duet vocal piano, flute and jazz trio to string ensemble with choir. Famous works from modern time composers such as Astor Piazolla, Steve Dobrogosz, Claude Bolling to Karl Jenkins will be amongst the main program of the concert.

BEBEK GORENG YOGI Looking for a spicy kick to your meal? This chili-loving duck restaurant might well do the trick. Welcome to Bebek Goreng Yogi - a simple restaurant specializing in spicy duck. But don’t let its simpleness fool you. They have probably the best tasting duck in town, and the key is in their special chili mixes.

We visited the Bebek Goreng Yogi at Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) recently. Located in one of the shop houses, the restaurant is pleasingly simple, with warung style wooden furniture to give a more communal feel. There are some big photos of their signature dishes, and that’s just about it. Nothing fancy here, the main focus is the food. The key to making the perfect duck dish is apparently in the cooking process. First the duck is boiled to make it softer. Next, some herbs and spices like ginger, lemon grass, and citrus leaves are added to get rid of the usually strong duck scent. The result is a great tasting duck meat that is tender and fragrant, which has become a regular treat for many patrons.
each of these dishes is attractively priced at Rp 17.500 each. If you prefer, you can also have your duck grilled. The perfect accompaniment for these dishes is of course the steamed white rice. You can also have them with the fragrant coconut rice or ‘nasi uduk’. Rice portions are priced at Rp 4000. Some fried Tahu Tempe (Rp 3000) options will also make good sides for your duck dishes.
Bebek Goreng Yogi also has some delicious lumpia bebek (10k for three pieces), but for us, the real star of the show is the wonderful duck gravy and the sambel mangga (mango chili mix). These addons are readily available on your table. Don’t be put off by the greenish goo; this duck gravy has There are three main dishes at Bebek Goreng Yogi; lots of flavour that will perfectly compliment the bebek goreng sambel hijau (fried duck with green meal. Try dipping your duck in the sambel mangga chili; the ‘mildest’), bebek goreng sambel rica (fried for added oomph. Spicy and tangy, it is simply duck with red chili; hotter), and the bebek goreng exquisite! sambel mercon (fried duck with ‘fireworks’ chili – yep, it’s the hottest one!) Oh by the way, when To cool off, go for the fresh fruit juices. Our favorite we say ‘mildest’, it means that it is the least hot of is the belimbing (star fruit) juice (Rp 7500). the three. CAL-ROLL FACTORY More ‘diner’ than ‘dinner’, this is not your average stuffy sushi joint. Welcome to rockin’ Cal-Roll Factory! If you’re a sushi snob, don’t come here. It’ll probably be your worst nightmare! Nah, I’m kidding… kind of. With a name derived from the California Roll, you can bet almost everything inside here is ‘Americanized’. But genuine or not, this new eatery has been hitting all the right notes with the capital city’s culinary connoisseurs. Cal-Roll Factory started in Los Angeles. Back when I lived there, I remember going to the small but great and always packed Japanese restaurants on Sawtelle Blvd in the Little Tokyo West area in West LA. Sure enough, there was a Cal-Roll Factory on Santa Monica Blvd, just off Sawtelle. I visited the Jakarta one recently with a friend and was warmly greeted by Ronald Wihardjo, its owner/chef. Food interior, with playful floor-to-ceiling signs of their interesting sushi creations down one side of the restaurant. With an extensive selection, it took quite a while to digest the menu, so Ronald started us off with a delicious appetizer called tuna tataki (55k). The seared tuna, accented with black pepper goes exceptionally well with the special Ponzu sauce. What an explosion of tastes! We also tried the salmon skin salad (38k), a delectable combo of salmon skin, carrot, cucumber, iceberg lettuce, with ginger dressing and bonito. Now to the sushi. With lots of specialty rolls to choose from, we asked Ronald for a couple of the favourites here. He came up with something called ‘Harvey’ (59k); a blend of deep fried albacore tuna, salmon, and asparagus. Then came the ‘Kinta’ (42k); a roll of spicy tuna and crispy seaweed, as well as the ‘Sunny Scape’; a California roll topped with fresh water eel tempura. All of these dishes are doused with a special secret sauce that seems to bring out the best of each one of them. It’s pretty clear that these are not your typical Japanese dishes at all.You have hand it to them for creatively tweaking traditional favourites. Oh, and the portions here are huge! Good bang for your buck, I say. Cal-Roll Factory also has a good number of nonsushi selections. Go for the interestingly named ‘Fish of Fury’ (52k); salmon teriyaki, potato croquette, served with salad and factory rice. Or the ‘Chicken Run’ (48k); choice of chicken teriyaki or karage, served with potato croquette, salad, and factory rice. The ‘factory rice’, by the way, is actually steamed rice topped with an egg omelette and baked salmon. Another nice twist. you’ve never heard the name of, then this place is definitely a must-try. For drinks, we had the BLT (20k); a blend of Blackcurrant, Lychee, and Tea. And how could we Cal-Roll Factory is a feel good and fun eatery. not order the ‘Son of A Peach’ (28k)? Sanctum Adventure, Thriller. Director: Alister Grierson. Writers: John Garvin and Andrew Wight. Cast: Richard Roxburgh, Rhys Wakefield, Ioan Gruffudd, Christopher Baker, Alice Parkinson. A diving team faces a deadly expedition to an unexplored and unaccessible underwater cave system deep within the Earth. Employing James Cameron’s 3-D photography techniques developed to shoot Avatar and inspired by many underwater cave divers’ true experiences, this film brings all the elements of dangerous adventure and claustrophobic tension. It’s a breathless and gripping journey, so make sure your oxygen tank is full when you’re entering the cinema!

Not just your ordinary chick flick, Dear Galileo is the story of two girl friends; one is running away from school and another is running away from love. They decide to backpack across Europe with the joint purpose of visiting the birthplace of Galileo. For every girl out there who ever has felt insecure, broken hearted or fallen out with their best bud, pack away all your dramas and follow these two to London, Paris, Rome and even the leaning tower of Pisa.
Caught in the Crossfire Action, Crime. Writer & Director: Brian A. Miller. Cast: Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Chris Klein, Adam Rodriguez, Richard T. Jones, Christine Lakin, Jason Ambrose. You may think that all cop drama flicks keep doing the same thing. Well, there’s a reason for this: People like crime, guns, car chases, cops and bad guys. Two detectives, Briggs (Chris Klein, American Pie) and Shepherd (Adam Rodriguez, CSI: Miami) are investigating a gang-related crime case, but find themselves targeted by both gang members and crooked cops. What You Need To Know About Stellarissa’s New Boutique On April 1, 2011 STELLARISSA opened its doors for the first time at Upper Ground unit 31 of Grand Indonesia East Mall. Luckily, I was among the people invited to enjoy intimate high tea with Stella Rissa and have a chit-chat with her about the new boutique. “My objective for opening Stellarissa pret a porter space is to make my ready-to-wear collection ready to buy. There is no point in having fashion shows or other exposure if the collection isn’t accessible to my potential customers. Being in the centre of Jakarta, I hope Stellarissa will be convenient for those who wish to find out more about my collection,” said the designer herself.
What collection Stellarissa?

from What are the items that have become customers’ favourites?
The collection at Stellarissa is an extension of ‘Woman Possession’ - a ready-to-wear collection which was showcased during Jakarta Fashion Week 10/11 last November. This collection tends to be more casual and not too avant-garde. It consists of not only party and cocktail dresses, but there are also more casual looks such as bermuda shorts, and shirts.
Basic items because they are affordable and easy to combine with other pieces. Moreover, women don’t like to wear impractical attire, tight clothes, or dresses with too many details or accessories. For example, the satin tank top has become a best seller since it comes in several choices of colours. Although these are basic items, when you buy a designer piece, it always has a special value which makes it an investment.

Yes. There are also cocktail dresses that have a
touch of couture, but they don’t exceed Stellarissa’s signature. They are couture because they need lots of handwork in the production. Not everyone can afford couture dresses.
How often does Stellarissa add new pieces into the store? Once every two weeks, there’s always something new at Stellarissa.
What about the price range in Stellarissa?
The prices start at Rp.588,000 and go up to to Rp. 5,888,000. It depends on the materials used to make the clothes.
Lastly, who is the target market for Stellarissa? It targets women who are confident, have a strong character and personality and know what they want. Women who love simple clothes with clean cuts and androgynous styles are also suitable for Stellarissa.
So, do you think you fit the characteristics above? You’d better check the store yourself!

A Gentler Reformulated
Clinique Clarifying Lotion at Last
C
leanse. Exfoliate. Moisturize. For as long as I remember, those three steps have been stuck in my head, creating the perfect step by step skincare regime. Clinique 3-step was one of the first skincare regimes that I used. At that time, the simplicity of the steps and the results were undeniable. For over ten years, I kept using Clinique 3-step until my skin grew a tolerance to it and it no longer worked for me in an environment that is somewhat different from my teenage one. That was the time when I started working in an office and external factors such as stress really affected the health of my skin, as well as external problems such as pollution and the hot Jakarta sun. I felt my skin was getting old too fast and I needed something more. I thought it was such a shame that such a great skincare regime hadn’t been reformulated since it was first created Clinique Clarifying Lotion has remained the same since the 70s, and it’s hard to imagine this product being able to tackle problems related to our skin’s health that were not present at the time that it was created. As the days went by, this Clarifying Lotion felt too harsh for my skin and it really made my already dry and stressed skin even drier because of the alcohol content that was not balanced with other ingredients to moisturize my skin. Imagine my joy then, when Affi told me that Clinique had reformulated the Clarifying Lotion. I was so happy and offered to review it myself. I’ve always had faith in the Clinique 3-Step but I just wish that they would add something to it. This new Clarifying Lotion, not only comes in a much milder formula that allows you to exfoliate twice a day
beatmag.com 062
without injuring your healthy skin condition, but also it comes with Sodium Hayluronate, Glycerin and Trehalose to help buffer the skin during the exfoliating process. I am especially ecstatic reading the first two added ingredients because the main problem that I felt with the old formula was that it felt too dry. Those ingredients help to keep my skin hydrated during the daily exfoliating process so my skin doesn’t feel so dry and tight when I use the Clarifying Lotion. What are the main differences that I feel with this new formula? First and foremost you can kiss goodbye to the alcohol smell of the old Clarifying Lotion. It also feels very fresh and makes your skin so supple without any tightening feel on the surface. There was no noticeable flaky skin because of the non-drying formula. I have to say, I fell in love all over again with the Clinique Clarifying Lotion! Like the old version of Clarifying Lotion, this one comes in four types: Type 1: Very dry to dry Type 2: Dry combination Type 3: Combination Oily Type 4: Oily So there’s one available for each type of skin. The new Clarifying Lotion will be available from Clinique counters nationwide beginning in May onward with a cost of Rp 260,000 for 200ml and Rp 370,000 for 400ml. rika Ernawan’s feminist nature is extremely evident in her art pieces. Like many other global feminist artists, Erika displays herself in her art works. Displaying one’s own body very plainly is something rarely encountered in works by Indonesian feminist artists. This display of one’s own body is a strategy related to their efforts to subvert the female construction found within a patriarchal society.
beatmag.com 066
Art
Most of Erika’s art works seen in the ‘Der Spiegel’ exhibition are self-portraits with an orientation against gender bias, quite different from commonly understood self-portrait pieces. Thus, it is important to consider the existence of other texts in Erika’s works. Nearly-nude female figures and mirrors are components used to highlight the feminist aura in Erika’s works. As well as presenting her own body, Erika explores a range of different possibilities. This time, her artistic urge has enabled her to become the subject, organizing scenes from outside the frame of her art works. In the performance art phase of her exhibition, Erika invites collectors to break the mirrors of her art pieces. This act is done using hammers that are also part of the exhibition. This can be seen as Erika’s attempt to involve her audience
in a deconstructive act against symbols of patriarchal culture. To fully realize this exhibition, Erika is also staging a performance art section. The entire exhibition floor will be covered with sheets of mirrors which will break when visitors tread upon them. Thus, the audience will become part of Erika’s artwork configuration. The audience will no longer occupy the position of an omnipotent watcher. Instead, they are now part of the watched. Viviyipartroom, The Promenade Lot 2-3 Jl. Dog Days Are NOT Over This
series of works in the solo show of the artist-cum-graphic designer Sanchia Hamidjaja reflects how art meets a range of visual creative fields. Her subjects come from her immediate environment, as we can see in the exhibition ‘Yin & Yang Dogs’ at Inkubator, Forme Building, Widjaya, from April 24 to May 15.
The goings on of her two dogs inspire her to create comic characters. Artistically inspired by American comics such as Peanuts (by Schulz), Garfield (by Jim Davis), Life in Hell (by Matt Groening) and Spy vs. Spy (by Anthony Prohías), Yin & Yang Dogs is Sanchia’s way of sharing stories about their lives with many people. It is also a form of dedication for her pets.

Sanchia has been exploring a range of idioms and her wide-ranging experiences convince her that ideas can be conveyed in a variety of visual languages, in line with what is required by the ideas. Sometimes she uses her characters to comment on how chaotic city life is. In her black-and-white painting of crowded houses and buildings, she inserts the characters of Ringo and Kwamee in the midst of an urban jungle, and the audience is thus invited to look for them. She borrows the idea of the interactive comic series of Where’s Wally? to depict the conditions of a metropolis like Jakarta.
Her close relationship with her two dogs makes Sanchia’s Yin & Yang Dogs able to strongly and thoroughly convey the animals’ characters. The depictions of the comings and goings of Ringo and Kwamee are able to present us with a fascinating and imaginative world of animals, strongly influenced by the warmth of friendship. By creating strong characters, Sanchia is invariably able to come forward with strong works and creations. For her, every character is a tool to convey a certain idea. @ribosa

It has an LCD display and a wheel for easy navigation, the ‘Smart Random’ function which gives the listener the possibility of random access to other radio stations of the same type as those most frequently listened to. http://www.firebox.com £99.99
The USB Missile Launcher has been completely reengineered to deliver the extra power needed to hit the furthest corners of the office… or your boss’ office where he may be discussing your possible redundancy. Easy mouse and keyboard control, four foam missiles, 25’ range (with purchase of the new Ballistic Missiles) and 4’ of USB cable. http://www. play-asia.com/ US$ 34.90
The Military Mosquito Countermeasure. This is the mosquito countermeasure that is currently used by military personnel abroad. Proven to be up to 98% effective in repelling mosquitoes in field tests conducted by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, it uses d-cis/trans allethrin, a synthetic version of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum. Ideal for gardening, camping, or other outdoor recreation, the countermeasure slides into an included pouch equipped with belt loops and a sturdy clip for easy transport. A 2 1/2” x 1 1/2” mat saturated with repellent slides into a metal grill; a butane-fueled heater vaporizes the repellent to create a 15’ x 15’ zone unbearable for mosquitoes and other biting insects. Includes one butane cartridge and three ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent mats. http://www.hammacher.com $34.95

Nikon D5100 Scosche Flexible Bluetooth Keyboard Sitting between the entry-level D3100 and the upper mid-level D7000, the D5100 is a hard camera to categorise. It combines the user-friendly ergonomics of the D3100 with the impressive 16MP CMOS sensor of the D7000, but throws in a couple of neat tricks of its own, including an articulated LCD screen, and a set of all-new effect modes. An entry-level camera but with admirable delusions of grandeur. http://tokocamzone.com/ Rp. 7.750.000
Wirelessly connects to Bluetooth equipped devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab, smartphones, laptops, netbooks and other Bluetooth enabled devices. Flexible roll-up design is ideal for travel and storage. Rugged high quality silicone material repels dust and liquids, and the washable design allows you to work even when a spill occurs. Up to 30 feet of wireless range. http://www.amazon.com $59.99
Samsung W200 Samsung has announced the W200, a vacation-proof 1080p camcorder that boasts a bigger LCD and faster lens than its natural enemy, the Kodak Playsport. It shoots 1080p video through its F/2.2 lens (the Playsport has a F/2.8) and displays it on a 2.3” screen (versus the Playsport’s 2”). Beyond that the differences kind of dry up, although the ability to pause recording and continue with the same video file later will be handy to a lot of people who don’t want to fiddle with editing afterwards. It goes down to 3 meters underwater, and is safe against basic drops and dust. http://www.amazon.com/ $159.99

One of Indonesia’s top notch surfers, recently crowned as a surf champion in Thailand, winner of the Japan CHP international challenge, official rider for Quiksilver, Coca-Cola, Power Balance, a TV commercial star, and now CEO of the ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championshops). This remarkable yet humble go-getter talked to the Beat’s big daddy, Dedi about the way it is. You’re in Jakarta right now, is it a surf, style or business trip? g I’m here to visit my sister, and also to come to my cousin’s wedding. Usually I don’t really like coming to Jakarta unless it’s something urgent like playing golf with Quiksilver or Coca-Cola. You have won a lot of titles in surfing and scored some amazing endorsements, how do these achievements impact on you personally, and what do have to say to all the aspiring riders out there? g I’m sure I’m still the same person, those things don’t make me change into someone I’m not. I’m really thankful that my sponsors have been really supportive with my career. I would love to see all those surfers around Indonesia having a good time in their backyards, because Indonesia is full of perfect waves, that’s what I want them to do. You are now busy with the ISC tour, going from west Sumatra to the far Timor Islands. If you can sum up in one sentence, what’s the vision of the championship? g The Coca-Cola ISC pro tour has been getting really great media coverage and also government support. Our aim is to spread the sport all over Indonesia and the future vision is to help bring Indonesian surfers onto the World Tour. Now we have Dede Suryana enjoying great success on the CC-ISC tour. He’s the 2008 champ and I hope many more follow his path.

You have a deep mission for beach cleaning backed up by Coca Cola. How contaminated are our beaches? g I’m the ambassador for the Corporate Social Responsibility program of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, also partnered with the Quiksilver Foundation. I’ve been really busy working together with the team making sure that we have a better environment, especially on the beaches of Bali. The results have been really significant, more trash is being removed from the beaches in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Jimbaran and Kedonganan. I would like to have everybody on this island aware of this environmental problem that we are facing, this is not only the responsibility of big companies but all of us. Is your real name Tipi Jabrik in your ID? g No, Tip Jabrik Noventin. Who do you listen to (on your iPod in the car) before or after you hit the waves? g The new single from The SIGIT, The Cure, The Gotham. Favourite local surfers? g Wayan Betet Merta, Made Kasim. Who will be the bomb (talented potential) surfer in next 5 years? g Jeren Kiring from Lombok. Shout out to Beatmag: g The best mag to get updated!! Interview by Dedi Kristian

aditya Rondi bested last year’s Rumble in Da Jungle winner Pepen Hendrik today in a 30 minute man-on-man battle in testing 5-6 foot wave conditions to claim victory and the additional distinction of being the first goofy footer to ever win the legendary event. The stylish and aggressive goofy footer from Kuta nicknamed “the Bull” takes home a winner’s check for Rp15million and 3,000 Coca-Cola ISC Championship points, and now sits in second spot in the 2011 rankings, having finished equal third in the first event on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour in April. This was the third and final day of competition at the 2011 Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle, the first day having been held at Bangsal Beach in Sanur Reef on April 27th with a trial heat and Rounds 1 through 3, then Round 4 was completed at “Da Jungle” on April 30, and on May 3 the quarterfinals through finals were run once again at “Da Jungle.” Though the wave conditions were challenging, almost maxing out the capability of “Da Jungle” to handle them, and torrential rain was pouring down for more than an hour mid way through the
morning, the Open Division and Masters (over 35 years of age) contestants battled through the pounding waves and inclement weather starting from 7:30 am ‘til the final horn blew at just before 12:30 pm. In the Master’s final, last year’s Rumble runner up and 2010 Coca-Cola ISC Masters champion Ketut Juliarta staged a come-from-behind charge to leapfrog last year’s winner Wayan Budayasa and take the victory, blasting a medium sized set wave apart with a series of searing turns and posting a 7 point score, the highest of the final. He was elated with his win, thanking everyone profusely from the podium while being sprayed with Coca-Cola by his fellow competitors. With a second place finish in the first event and runner up finish the day before, Wayan Budayasa now sits in the number one spot in the 2011 Master’s Division rankings. D’BASE Restaurant I’ve always been curious as to why so many places have the d’prefix on their name. A lazy way to imply ‘The’? Something to do with gangsta rap speak? Actually it’s neither of those.

I’m reliably informed by F&B Director of the Breezes Bali Henry Alexie Bloem that it is, in fact, a Balinese thing – and not only that, but apparently I’ve been pronouncing it wrong. Henry should know too - as one of the most respected Balinese chefs around, he is also the head of the Indonesian Chefs Association (ICA). However, to assume that Balinese is the only cuisine on the menu at this new addition to the burgeoning Dhyana Pura (or whatever it’s name is right now) dining scene would be somewhat underestimating the place. ‘Pan Asian’ is the call, and after a quick flick through the menu I see that it’s pretty apt, with hints of Vietnamese, Indonesian, Chinese and Indian found throughout the concise, easily accessible menu. Meaning ‘spice’ in Bahasa Bali, d’Base has been around for only a few months since early this year, but already looks well established. The fun, funky interior and bright, bold décor scream ‘informal’, with the inside area boasting a stage for live music (from 8.30 every night) and a large screen for sports. Up front a row of slightly more intimate tables are set back just off the road, giving the opportunity for some interesting people watching. Having learned my lesson from previous gluttony, I bring along a crack team of eaters tonight to assist. Drinkwise it’s beers all round, and we soon get stuck into the menu with gusto. First up we share out a portion of the chicken martabak with yoghurt, mint and chili honey dip (38k++), as well as a serving of the Indo/Indian shredded chicken, chili lemongrass rolled in warm chappattis (38k++). Really only the pre-starter warm ups, and we’re all
already salivating at the delicious mix of flavours. For the starters proper, we leave Henry to send out his top picks which consist of the Balinese spicy chicken with shrimp paste, kaffir lime in Vietnamese rice paper (38k++), and coconut milk lemongrass salmon broth (40k++). On to the mains and after a lengthy period of consideration we settle for the duck dekil (dirty duck) (50k++), the Chinese influenced crispy pork belly with star anis and sweet soy flavouring (49k++), the crispy soft shell crab with salted egg yolk sauce (50k++), and last, but by no means least d’Base style Balinese chicken (43k++). It’s hard to pick a favourite as food is piled on forks and exchanged around the table so that everyone gets a mouthful of everything, but it seems that the universal consensus favours the special d’Base chicken. Just. Usual dinnertime discourse demands that we have dessert at this point, so not wishing to buck this admirable trend we share out a double portion of the Breezes banana split (32k++), and a serving of the warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream (42k++) – perfectly proportioned and a great way to round off a fantastic meal. d’Base is open everyday from 6pm for dinner, and holds a cooking class every Monday and Thursday from 12pm onwards with the main man of Balinese cuisine himself chef Henry. There are also regular drinks promos and even a dedicated kid friendly section of the menu, so what are you waiting for? d’Base has got something for the whole family. Dan Ashcroft. 085 beatmag.com

T
he British synthpop band Hurts took to the stage at Hard Rock Cafe as part of their Asian tour. Space was hard to find as the foreign and local crowd were hypnotized by the duo’s performance as they performed their 80’s inspired sounds for the full house. The great voice of singer Theo Hutchcraft was only outshone a couple times by the mysterious tenor in the background, who dropped in some almost operatic moments and the stage lighting and sound was a credit to all involved.
