Non Jakartan’s like to ask, ‘What’s so fun about living in Jakarta?’. If you think about it, the question does have a point, what with all the insane traffic, unceasing political matters and high levels of stress, the capital does have its unbearable moments, but that can all be forgiven when you consider the loads of entertainment options on hand to help you forget about your worries. With the foreign movie boycott soon to be lifted, film fanatics can soon enjoy the long list of summer blockbusters on their way. Musical performances of all sorts from classy orchestral shows to trashing guitar refs to bass thumping dance music and everything else in between are making their way to every corner of the city. What else are you waiting grab a copy of TBJ or check out our website at http://jakarta.beatmag.com and see what the next two weeks of entertainment has in store for you.

‘MetalCrot’,TheReturnofMetalMusic Metal Crot is a project with the noble cause of bringing back to life the country’s dormant heavy metal rock bands that once thrashed the nation. By gathering old rockers from all over Indonesia and getting them to share their musical skills with newbie rockers on the stage in an event titled ‘One Think One Stage One World’ it is hoped that heavy metal can regain its rightful place in the local music scene. The event will be held on the 10th of July at Outdoor Bulungan, and will begin at 8am continuing until 10pm in the evening.

Owl City October may still be months away, but Java Musikindo has already prepared its upcoming artist for that month. Scheduled to perform in Jakarta on the 28th is electronic synthpop outfit Owl City, a musical project by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Adam Young. He’ll be taking to the stage at Tennis Indoor Senayan. After starting his career on myspace and releasing two independent albums, Owl City gained mainstream popularity with the 2009 major label debut album Ocean Eyes, which spawned the hit quadruple-platinum single “Fireflies”. Tickets can now be ordered online at their website www.javamusikindo.com. It could be a good idea to book your tickets early as they will be selling quick!

What music are you into at the moment? Hardly anything. It's kind of ironic you wanting to ask me about music, the last few years I have zoned out of active listening. I used to be really into music, and played music too - guitar, flute, even started playing sitar at one point in time. But when I started getting more seriously into photography, music just became less central. But in the odd moments when I do listen, during long bouts of editing photos for example, I might listen to something like Maria Callas, Latin Groove, classic blues, or whatever is on iTunes on my computer - mostly anything newer is whatever my assistant leaves there! Whatever little bit I do listen too is a fairly mixed bag!

beatmag.com 038

What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? I can't really remember which was the first one, it was more like a batch that I actually owned when we were living in Europe. I was fifteen, late Sixties - I had worked all summer (my dad was posted in Germany at the time) really back breaking work on an experimental farm. I had all this money saved up for all kinds of stuff. Then I broke the windshield on my Dad's Mercedes (long story): he made me pay for it, so I had little left of the savings. I used some of it to buy albums by Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan (Bob Zimmerman was the first to prove that it didn't matter if you couldn't really sing if you were a genius poet), Jimi Hendrix

Feature Experience etc. But I didn't have a record player, so had to borrow my sister's when she wasn't around. Bummer, hahahaha. I also listened a lot to Leonard Cohen who was also a big influence on the music that I actually played. Everything I listened to was about rebellion, which was so big in Europe in the 60s. I had left Indonesia barely a teenager, and we had to sneak in listening to the Beatles. And the Rolling Stones were just starting to happen, I loved their albums. Meanwhile my Dad really was hoping I would listen to Keroncong. What is/are your all-time favourite album/s? Why? In reality when I talk about 'favourite albums' it goes back to those formative years when I was a teen in Europe… I loved Abraxas (Santana), loved the Latino rhythm mixed with the way Carlos Santana played that guitar. I loved Hendrix Experience (loved the line "scuse me while I kiss the sky..." and ‘Wild Thing’ just made me crazy, heh) and anything by the Rolling Stones was such a good singalong. Dylan's poetry was so fast and smart and evocative (loved the way he sang ‘All Along the Watchtower’ - it put you there). Leonard Cohen resonated with the moody bastard in me ('Like a bird on the wire, like a drunkard in the midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free’). Loved Crosby Stills and Nash. I had long hair almost to my waist after graduating, and that line "I almost cut my hair the other day.." seemed so important hahaha yet it was meant ironically. The long hair was such a symbol back then, it made you cool. And the cops in Jakarta used to chase us to cut our hair off - maybe that's why I moved to Bali? A few years ago I met Graham Nash, it was sweetly ironic: turns out he is a huge photo enthusiast so I wound up giving him a slide show. He started the whole giclé printing thing, so my first ever digital giclé print was done by one of my teenage idols!!! On that note I also met Abdul Mati Klarwein, who was the artist who painted the album cover for Abraxas, in Bali. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Undoubtedly Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. At first I thought it was cool mind blowing stuff, but after the second loop I lost my enthusiasm. I guess I always liked good lyrics. The title song

was a bit lacking in that area.... Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? A human being with good education and freedom. Oh, and I want good ears without the damn tinitis ringing 24 hours - the result of standing 30 feet away from banks of thousands and thousands of watt speakers. (Could anyone be that stupid to stand that close to the stage when for example Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were laying it down? Well now it's official from the stupid horse’s mouth. What music do you choose to start your weekend? I like it quiet to begin with. And music you choose to end your weekend? I like it quiet to end with.

Starting 1st of July Rio Helmi is holding a big exhibition called ‘Transitory’ at the Komaneka Gallery in Ubud (Monkey Forest Road). It is a collection of his work on Balinese spiritual culture dating back 30 years. There are some from his latest book ‘Memories of the Sacred’ released in October. “Besides different images," he says, "what is also different this time is that I have painted quite a few of my prints on canvas with oil paints, and even applied gold leaf to a couple!"

Oppie Andaresta: Fun, Footlose, and Fancy Free

Sementara mengenai After releasing an album with the theme of women’s emancipation, in 2010, Oppie Andaresta is back again with ‘Dengan Hati Senang’. Released in April 2011, this newest composition is quite easy listening and more radio-friendly compared to the last offering. As Oppie puts it: "commercialoriented, more footloose-and-fancy-free." The album, with ‘Mau Have Fun’ as the first single, consists of nine songs which talk mostly about daily life and social issues. In ‘Matahariku’, for instance, she sings about her beloved husband (without him even realizing it), while ‘Jangan Bedakan (Ayah Bunda)’ points at the distorted relationship between parents and their children.

Mau have fun? Lakukan dengan hati senang!

Despite the photos that express her more ‘modern’ look, this ambassador of Peduli Perempuan (women's rights), has asserted that she's still the same Oppie inside. The urban cosmopolitan look is only a fun experiment initiated by her photographer. She's not into manufactured images, she's still into simple and natural images, just as she's always been. Currently, Oppie is busy promoting Dengan Hati Senang to the radios around big cities in Indonesia, with a tour following in July.

Rock? With

non-stop killer line-ups of local and international artists regularly rocking our nation’s capital, you better be fully geared up, well prepared, and ready to rock the house. If you need help on what to do on concert night, here are some essential tips that the TBJ can share for your upcoming dates: 1. First of all, don’t forget your ticket. This is key. 2. Wear a T-shirt and a pair of jeans or shorts so you’ll be comfortable. A pair of sneakers or flats (for the girls) is also important, so it won’t hurt that much when someone steps on your toe in the crowd.

3. If the concert promoter allows it, bring a camera for documentation, bottled water, and also binoculars if your seat is far from the stage. 4. Bring a fully charged cell phone so you can easily find your friends if you get separated from them. 5. If the show is outdoor, maybe you could slip a small umbrella in your bag. You never know if it’s gonna pour. 6. Bring a medium light sling bag or a waist pack for your gear. 7. Come with a full belly. You don’t want to pass out in the middle of the crowd due to hunger. 8. Allow yourself plenty of time to arrive and park your vehicle. This is also essential if you want to

be in front of the stage to witness your idol from up close. 9. Find a venue layout so you’ll know where you are and where you should be. 10. Find out where the restroom is so you won’t have to wander around when you need to go in the middle of the show. It’s better if you go to the restroom before the show begins. Know the music, and also the lyrics of the songs long before the date, so you can sing along with the rest of the crowd. Don’t be afraid if you’re not in tune, you’re there to have a great time and not to worry about what other people are going to say. So sing your heart out and enjoy the show! (Dini Siregar)

ost-rock talent from Texas bring more expansive instrumentals as the core essence. Elegies, instrumental lullabies and narratives are gracefully nuanced. ‘Last Sound Surrounding’ comes up wise and strong, and the rest of the songs are good emotional driving tools, drama machines, and mood-building stimulators. An extension of greatness after their previous ‘The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place’ and ‘All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone’ album. Big rich sound from the Lone Star State. DK

he so called ‘weaponized Barry White’ has said that this album is his time in the limelight. After listening to Lady Killer, it’s clear Cee lo Green wasn’t playing with the statement. The single ‘F*ck You / Forget You’ has hit hard on charts and airplay. Playful, foolhardy, merry, Broadway fashioned, this Lady Killer album is an urban blessing to the industry. I’d suspect you might not have too many struggles to differentiate between Cee Lo’s sound and Gnarls Barkley. DK

T

he fact that Indonesia has many talented musicians is something that is seldom highlighted in our daily news. Luckily, sometimes we can see glimpses of this oft unappreciated talent every now and then through TV talent shows. The great flair of young soprano Putri Ayu who was runner up at ‘Indonesia Mencari Bakat’ is one example of these talented musicians. Based on demographics, we can easily say that singers and pianists have the biggest numbers compared to other musicians. Plenty of young and talented pianists like Randy Ryan (16 years old), Gloria Teo (16 years old), Alvin Y. Tanoko (17 years old), not to mention existing seniors like Adelaide Simbolon Simanjuntak, Ananda Sukarlan, Iswargia Sudarno, Levi Gunardi and plenty of similar others are all made in Indonesia. One of the talented pianists that I would like to highlight this time is none other than Wibi Soerjadi. For an Indonesian audience, his name might not be a familiar one yet. However, this Indonesian origin pianist is actually very well known in Europe. Born in Leiden, Wibi started to build his reputation since he was just 15 years old by winning the first prize at the Princes Christina Concourse in The Hague. He has continued to win more prestigious awards since then, and is considered one of the brightest young participants in many of these events.

Graduated from Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam after only four years of study, Wibi’s star rose quickly as a TV performing artist where the audience seemed to love his charismatic and communicative approach. As a concert pianist, Wibi has been performing all around the world with prominent orchestras such as The Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra in Moscow, The Residentie Orkest, The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchester. He is also known as a recording artist and has released a series of very successful gold selling records since 2000. In the long line of his fantastic career, Wibi Soerjadi has participated in some of the world’s biggest events, including Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee concert in Disneyland Paris, as well as following in the tradition of the great pianists by performing at Carnegie Hall in the USA. It goes without saying then, that we are quite fortunate to have him finally come to Jakarta and perform. It is not only exciting to see what kind of program that he is planning to play, but it is also a proud moment to see that a person of Indonesian origin could gain so many great achievements. It is definitely an inspiration to all of us, and especially to our young aspiring musicians.

MEUTIA Take a tasty trip to the land of Aceh in the heart of Jakarta. Welcome to Meutia!

I

haven’t seen my friend Andiena in a while. She told me recently that she will be going to Europe this summer for two months! Her traditional Indonesian dance troupe will be performing in several festivals there. Naturally I felt happy for her, and decided that this was more than a reason for me to take her out before she leaves. We decided to meet at Meutia, located in the Bendungan Hilir area close to Sudirman, and one of the most well known Acehnese restaurants in Jakarta. We’d talked about going there for some time, but hadn’t really found the time to, but luckily this time we were able to meet for early dinner. She was so excited telling me all about her summer trip that she worked up quite an appetite. And she was making me hungry, too… Meutia looks just like a simple traditional restaurant, but features some typical Acehnese decoration such as Islamic paintings, songket clothes, drums and old photographs, the place looks that bit more interesting. beatmag.com 054

The restaurant has a smorgasbord of dishes, similar to the type you see at a Padang eatery. Coconut milk is one of the main ingredients, with a lot of curry-type dishes, but instead of going for a handful of choices on the table, Andiena and I decided to go for the more popular items on the menu at Meutia. The mie Aceh (Acehnese noodle) dishes are definitely the crowd favourites here. These dishes are full of herbs and spices, and they usually come with a good kick of spiciness. There are a few ways to prepare these noodles: from fried or sautéed,to full on soupy - all made fresh to order. I went for the sautéed mie super special (35k), while Andiena ordered the fried mie special biasa (17k). My order came chock full of seafood (shrimp, squid,

Food

and crab) and was a true feast for the eyes, nose, and of course, tastebuds! Although Andiena’s order was more on the conservative side, it was certainly not lacking in taste. ‘Biasa’ is a bit strong I’d say. You can really savour the different herbs and spices complemented with the beef, and both dishes get the two thumbs up from us. For the drinks, both of us ordered the teh tarik or ‘pulled’ tea (12k). I had mine hot, while hers was on ice. The blend of tea and milk, with some spices was just perfect. Handy hint: do not eat the cinnamon stick or use it as a straw! It’s meant as decoration and a useful stirrer for your tea only! Before we left, we shared the delicious roti canai (12k) - another favorite here. Similar to Indian roti prata, this pancake like dish can actually be

enjoyed with a savory curry, or in this case, with sweet condensed milk and sugar. A wonderful way to end our dinner. Andiena and I decided to meet once more before her trip, although maybe we’ll try a European restaurant, just to get her palate ‘prepared’ and save our next Meutia visit to welcome her back to Indonesia!

PICCOLO Mega Kuningan welcomes a new eaterythat could bethe next big thing in this business area. ‘Piccolo’ is an Italian word, meaning ‘small’, and while this restaurant maybe smallish in size, it is certainly big enough in terms of style and taste with elements of wood dominating the interior, all nicely accented with mirrors. We decided to give them a try and visited Piccolo recently for a late lunch after one of those long meetings at an office nearby. We found the place very inviting and comfortable - Piccolo really is as cozy as they come. The friendly staff took us to our table while chillout music was playing softly in the background. With a name like Piccolo you may think that it’s an exclusively Italian restaurant, when in fact the menu is much more extensive. The food here is more on the continental side, with a selection of pastas, steaks and seafood sitting alongside popular Asian fare like nasi goreng, oxtail soup and teriyaki dishes.

Our hungry crew started with the chicken wings barbeque sauce with French fries (40k). The tasty tangy sauce really complemented the crispy chicken wings well. The cheese croquettes served with a side of blue cheese sauce (35k) and mozzarella cheese sticks with tartar sauce (40k) are also particular highlights. These are simple yet scrumptious starters, to say the least, and they prepared us well for the main dishes to come. We then moved on to the main course, and out came the pasta tagliatele di manza with rucolo salad and grana padana cheese (70k) and linguine salmon (65k). These pasta dishes were both excellent choices, and we especially loved the vodka cream sauce doused over the smoked salmon on the latter. However, the half roast chicken with mushroom sauce (75k) certainly hit all the right spots for me. The chicken was cooked to perfection, I could taste the wonderful herbs on my dish, and the homemade mushroom sauce and the potatoes made it all work perfectly.

Believe it or not, some of us actually still had room for dessert, and so decided to go for the Shatsaukha (40k): a crispy layered filo pastry with chopped almond served with vanilla sauce, and the warm chocolate melt (35k): a fantastic soufflé of melting chocolate served with vanilla ice cream. Both are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Yummy! We also decided that it’s never too early for a drink or two, and so ordered up the tiramisu martini (85k) and toblerone martini (85k). We had an outstanding lunch at Piccolo, and for a place that was opened only a little more than two months ago, this new, cozy eatery is well recommended. Maybe we’ll see you there next time! All About A Makeup

When I heard about airbrush makeup, I used to relate it with creative makeup and novelty body painting. Moreover, the technique of airbrushing makeup sounded overly complicated, But after attending the launch of ‘Airbrush Makeup’, a book by Chenny Han i realised that all my perceptions were wrong.

W

hat is airbrush makeup actually? It is a technique to apply makeup by spraying pigmented makeup products. The compressor in an airbrush tool concentrates the air and the product together to create a light mist upon the skin. It can be sprayed to almost any part of body including the eyes, lips and hair. There’s much more about airbrush makeup that all beauty enthusiasts need to learn, so here are some of the advantages of airbrush makeup.

1.

Say goodbye to your makeup sponge, eyeshadow brush, lipstick, eyeliner and the like; airbrush makeup is able to replace them all. However, the airbrush technique still requires the manual application of false eyelashes and undereye liner.

2.

Applying makeup with the airbrush technique is more hygienic compared to manual techniques. This is because when you use an airbrush, the hand or the makeup tool doesn’t make any direct contact with the skin.

lotions and so on. The makeup for the Avatar movie also used airbrush makeup. However, airbrush makeup is not yet common in Indonesia. That’s why Chenny Han wanted to share her knowledge with the Indonesian people. Chenny studied airbrush makeup at the Dinair Airbrush Institute of Hollywood, a noted institute with 25 years of experience, and this how her airbrush makeup book was born.

3.

The finished look of airbrush makeup is really smooth and natural because you only need a small amount of makeup and the airbrush tool will spread it evenly.

4.

Airbrush makeup is very long-lasting. It can last up to 18 hours without smudging or losing its sheen. No touch ups are needed, so it’s great for bridal makeup for example.

5.

Applying airbrush makeup is speedy. Spraying airbrush makeup saves you time compared to manual techniques. In the book, Chenny Han tells her story of when she was asked to put makeup on 150 models for Susan Budihardjo’s fashion show. It didn’t take her long to finish the makeup because she had her airbrush tools handy.

With a total of 92 pages, the book provides everything you need to know about airbrush makeup. The book is complimented with a DVD airbrush tutorial and examples of some airbrush makeup looks. The first section of this book explains the basics such as definition, historical background, purpose and tools. Then in the second chapter, Chenny asks the readers to start practicing their airbrush techniques. Find out how to use the tools, how to make a straight line and how to fill in the eyes or lips with colour. This tutorial also reveals some problems that may occur and how to solve them. In the next chapters of the book, Chenny gives numerous example of inspiring looks created by airbrush makeup; natural daily makeup, makeup for formal occasions, international bridal makeup, makeup for traditional brides, fantasy makeup, kids makeup, body painting and much more. Each makeup look is presented with impressive photo and clear step-by-step explanation. I believe that after reading the book, you’ll be interested to give airbrush makeup a try. If so, all the airbrush tools and makeup products can be found at the Chenny Han beauty school, located at Jl. Kebon Kacang XXX No. 8A, Central Jakarta. Tel: 021 310 0895 or 391 0050. Rizka - editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude

Airbrush makeup is also a popular thing in other countries. According to Chenny, women in the US wear it for daily use because it saves much of their time. It’s also useful for correcting skin imperfections such as scars, and spray tanning

What We Think Every Woman Should Have E

very woman should at least own an Armani black blazer at some point in their life. It’s such an iconic colour for the design house that during the opening of the Giorgio Armani boutique in Plaza Indonesia, almost every guest wore black. Armani black jackets fit everyone so perfectly and are always so beautifully made, that in my opinion I think we should have the same point of view as men about blazers: investing in a pair of good quality blazers instead of buying cheaper examples is definitely the way to go. The boutique opened with the usual cocktail party, but this time around instead of the loudly pumping music played by a DJ, Maylaffayza played her electric violin for the opening party. It was classical, just like Giorgio Armani, but also reflected the modern touches of the store. The 142 square metre boutique reportedly mirrors the Giorgio Armani store located in the fashionable district Roppongi Hills Tokyo, and is dominated by black granite stone floors and marmorino plastered walls finished in silver. What most caught my eye were the turbans atop each of the mannequins, reminding me of the

the second time the Indonesian Contemporary Art & Design exhibition (ICAD) is being held at The Grand Kemang, a boutique hotel in South Jakarta, between May 6 and June 17. ICAD is the first major exhibition to initiate collaborative design, fine arts, technology, entertainment with the hospitality industry, and involving interior designers, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, skenographers, artists, painters and sculptors. The six week exhibition is filled with a variety of program activities in the form of conventions, workshops, competitions, integrated performances and a mini market. The theme of this year’s ICAD is a term commonly used by magicians: ‘escapology’, which refers to the technique of freeing oneself from the various instruments of restraint. ICAD-2 is a form of restlessness in the field of art and design that strives to liberate from the normal, and is enlivened by the participation of seventeen people of various arts and design backgrounds. Publicly known as an actress and film director, Lola Amaria’s artwork presents a transparent tunnel

filled with film fragments and a variety of symbols that reflect the problems facing this country. ‘Escape from Myself’ is a short video by Gembong Wi featuring the artist in a straitjacket in the water, trying to liberate himself from bondage to symbolise that sometimes, we are the major obstacle in achieving freedom. The focal point of the exhibition is the video mapping work by Adi Panuntun, a young designer who produced the award-winning movie Cin(t)a. The video mapping breaks away from the usual format of film that is applied on a flat white field. In this case, Adi projects onto the grand facade of the hotel building itself. Hotel guests and visitors alike will be spoilt with a touch of art and design from the time they set foot into the lobby to almost every corner of the hotel. Spending time enjoying the exhibition is a great decision to make if you want to escape from the infamous Kemang heavy traffic jams. Be quick or you’ll miss it.

Lisa Soul

As a lady with a heavy dose of soul in her life, Lisa articulates it well and can be heard playing in some of Bali’s best places. Here, Flores’ first lady of soul sits down with Mr. Dedi Kristian to tell us about her roots.

Who was the first person to tell you that your voice was beautiful? My father Aloysius Ruing. It was at Christmas and I was singing a nice Christmas song called Holy Night. He told me that he was the luckiest father in the world to have a daughter like me. Now he’s in heaven! Love you father, proud of you!!

heard before that Bali had a lot of foreign tourists, hotels, cafes and bar, and I was sure that Bali was the right place for me.

Which singers have had a strong influence? Erykah Badu, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, Sade, Donna Summer, Cheryl Lynn, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston.

What is ‘soul’ to you? Soul is my life, my life is soul, and soul is my music. Soul is beautiful, soul is honest, soul is respect, soul is love, soul is heart! It gives people happiness, love, honestly, and peace.

Tell us which other countries you have sung in… I’ve had some amazing experiences. I toured with the American band, our first performance was in Grand Hyatt Singapore, then on to Diego Garcia, China, Dubai, Muscat, then back to Indonesia. How do you feel after doing a good performance? Of course I feel happy and satisfied, deeply moved, something beyond words. Performance you’ll always remember? I was seventeen singing ‘Amazing Grace’ in front of Pope John Paul II in Flores. I will never forget that. What made you move to Bali? In 1996 my brother Nikolas called me and asked me to come to Bali because he knew that I could sing. In Flores I was just a choirgirl singing gospel songs, but I always won singing competitions and such. I

Jp's

Warung Club

The old saying goes; ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. Not so though for JP’s, which has recently undergone a glittering revamp, bringing everyone’s favourite Dhyana Pura nightspot bang up to date.

A

nyone who’s been around Bali for a while should be pretty familiar with the JP’s name. The restaurant/club has been around for many years, furnishing a loyal crew of expats and tourists alike with simple, tasty grub and the odd night of live music. Since the refurbishment, JP’s has been transformed into a model of smart sophistication, with cool interior lighting and a classy, inviting ambience. One corner of the main premises is dominated by a spacious stage area allowing for a diverse mix of nightly live entertainment, and up the other end is JP’s very own ‘club within a club’ Maria Magdalena.

evening is the man responsible for updating the old JP’s menu, chef Nizar Achmad. A highly animated character, Indonesian-born Nizar talks at a million miles an hour and with an infectious sense of humour about his chef training in Auckland, the past sixteen years living in Sweden, and what’s on the menu. “You have to give people what they want, so I’ve kept the burgers and sandwiches, but I’ve added my own touches to those, as well as throwing in plenty of my own new creations,” he says excitedly. The mainly French and Nordic inspired menu is testament to Nizar’s time in Europe, but there are plenty of little local touches (like the Indonesian specialty page) on the menu Before the night descends though, the JP’s cuisine to keep everyone happy. A full menu from sushi ensures a steady stream of punters throughout emporium Ryoshi is even available at JP’s, further the doors for all-day breakfast, lunch and dinner. compounding the problem of making a quick Waiting for me as I arrive on a busy mid-week choice.

Food Nizar decides to send us out a platter of starters to help us out, and it’s not long before a huge serving plate is presented to us containing a selection of mouth-watering appetizers. The feta cheese cigars with tropical fruit chutney (22k), shish lamb kebabs with garlic yoghurt (29k), crispy salt and pepper shrimps (25k) and cold pineapple gazpacho (29k) make for an incredible sharing experience, and I urge Nizar to consider sliding the platter onto the menu permanently. Not usually one to devour prawns with the skins on, I’m simply blown away by the bite-size crispy shrimps that are the perfect accompaniment to my chilled Bintang. On to the mains, and the three of us decide to go for the slow cooked lamb shank with walnut harira, oyster mushrooms, potatoes and apple caramel (115k), lightly salted citrus Norwegian salmon with black feta risotto and lemon sauce (89k), and the couscous royale with Moroccan

meatball, chicken, martyrs sausage and harisa (79k). The impressive lamb shank literally falls off the bone and is delightfully succulent, although I find myself naturally drawn to the light and tangy salmon. Dessert comes in the same fashion as the starters, with a platter of coconut raspberry almond cake (33k), a homemade trilogy of carrot & cardamom, chili and brandy truffles, and a huge glass of Swedish warm oatmeal with Granny Smith apples and vanilla yoghurt - the latter being the definite winner in my humble pie opinion. With something for everyone, by day or by night, the new JP’s Warung Club is guaranteed to go from strength to strength. Dan Ashcroft
