Ramadan, the fasting month, has almost arrived. As in past years, Jakarta’s lively nightlife will fade for 30 days to allow the predominant Muslim community their religious rights. Before that time comes, many hotspots will be holding their ‘closing parties,’ featuring local guest DJs and residents, to prepare for their annual one-month hiatus. Don’t worry though, as some places in hotels and malls will still be open for business and music concerts will be on as usual. Just don’t expect to see the ‘party until dawn’ events for a while. Flip through TBJ and find out what closing parties are happening around town. Don’t miss a beat! Marhaban Ya Ramadan!

DeMarco

Sounds Like House, Electro house, Progressive House Hail From Jakarta

Have Been Dreco’s name has been ringing through the clubs in Jakarta since the late 90s. A regular at big-name events of all shapes and sizes and resident at night spots such as Zanzibar, BC Bar, Bedroom, and Zen, he is now the head of marketing at Triple Nine, as well as being signed to the El’8Teen Record roster.

Have Been Dreco merupakan satu nama yang sudah terdengar sejak akhir tahun 90-an, berkat kiprahnya di banyak acara maupun posisi sebagai resident DJ di berbagai klab seperti Zanzibar, BC Bar, Bedroom dan Zen, sebelum menjadi Head Marketing di klab Triple Nine dan bergabung dengan El’8Teen Record.

His interest in House and RnB led Dreco to try his hand at becoming a DJ. Inspired by the sounds of David Guetta, he went on to hone his turntablist skills, aiming for a smoother, high-quality sound. His expertise in mixing beats has taken him to venues outside the country, such as Luna Bar in KL, Malaysia. A humble office worker by day, DeMarco transforms at night, channeling his musical talent through his moonlight DJ gigs.

Bentara Budaya: A National Cultural Treasure

W

ho better to preserve the national culture than its heirs? Local preservation of culture is precisely the mission of a national cultural institution by the name of Bentara Budaya. First established in Yogyakarta in 1982, the institution was founded with the aim of representing a variety of cultures from different local backgrounds. Three years later, a Jakarta affiliate was built, in conjunction with local media mogul Harian Kompas, and opened with the successful Titik Temu Tembikar ceramic exhibition, involving artists from Liosadang, Purwakarta, West Java. Bentara Budaya continues to hold exhibitions featuring the best in traditional paintings, ceramic arts, statues, antique furniture, and wayang (puppets). One of the gems of the collection is the beautiful Rumah Kudus, an indigenous house that experts consider a blend of Chinese, colonial, and European-Chinese architectural styles. Originally located in Kudus, Central Java, the building was relocated to Jakarta for preservation. A total of 573 paintings are on display at Bentara Budaya, including works by famous artists such as

Affandi, Basoeki Abdullah, Aming Prayitno, Batara Lubis, Hendra Gunawan, and other luminaries of the Indonesian art world. Bentara Budaya is also the home of ceramic arts, including pieces in the Yuan, Tang, Sung, Ming, and Ching Chinese dynasty styles. A separate collection of statues numbers almost 400 items from Papua and Bali. Bentara Budaya also holds monthly film screenings, discussions, and performances. Beyond preserving local arts and culture, the institute often collaborates with other art organizations to put on international cultural events. If you have a passion for culture and art, Bentara Budaya is the place to visit. Why not take a break from the ordinary and see what this cultural establishment has to offer? (Dini Siregar)

Happy

Boss = Happy You!

Y

our goal of a successful career is bound to fail if you can’t maintain a healthy relationship with your boss. With unemployment still on the rise, making sure that your boss needs you is an important skill that guarantees job security. Ensure that the boss is happy with your work performance and feels supported in their leadership and he or she will want to keep you around. Now, what do you need to do to make your boss happy with your place in the office?

1.

Get the job done on schedule. Don’t work overtime unless you really have to. You’re maybe thinking that working late will impress your boss, but if you keep doing so all week, your boss may begin to wonder why you can’t get the job done in your regular work hours, and may start to question your ability.

2. Keep in mind that your boss is a normal human being with limits and flaws just like yours. From time to time, your boss will feel overwhelmed with his work and will need to answer to his own superior. Make sure to offer help when you are needed most.

3. Don’t sugarcoat things. When your boss asks you a question, give them the hard facts and answer truthfully. They will appreciate your honesty.

4. Treat your boss like he/she has all the right answers (even though in some cases you know better). This will boost the boss’s ego, and will eventually improve your relationship with them. 5.

If you can handle it, ask for more responsibility and be proactive. Take initiative and take on highprofile job tasks. It could lead to promotion!

6. Don’t embarrass your boss by not dressing up for important meetings. First impressions are important to clients, and your boss will appreciate your effort. Just don’t go overboard, and make sure not to overshadow your boss. If you’re already doing a great job at work, but are ready to move up, try some new ways to keep your boss happy. It’s a guarantee your boss will appreciate it! (Dini Siregar)

: d a l g r e p u S ta dan Nafsu in C , n o er t o t es T k c Ro Tidak memikirkan pasar. Tanpa beban. Bebas. Lepas.

With too much monkey business in their heads, Superglad released their fifth album, Cinta dan Nafsu. Over eleven songs, this Jakartan quartet follow the paths of their overflowing libidos. The lyrics of songs like “Enny Arrow,” “Mas Tur dan Mba Sri,” and “Sofa Merah Percintaan” are pure testosterone-driven rock.

After the group released a free-download teaser single, “Rajah Sayap Malaikat” in May, anticipation was high for the album, which was formally brought out on June 25, 2011. The first 1,000 copies sold out during their solo concert on the first day of release.

Butuh pelampiasan? Berniat menggelinjang berbalut musik cadas? Pergi dan beli album rock testoteron ini!

The new composition from the band, founded in 2003, sees them changing paths from pop-punk to a more metal sound. According to Giox, the bass player, they looked to the Misfits, Bad Religion, and Smoking Popes as musical guides on this one. The group refuses to follow what the market wants, focusing instead on what’s important to them: freedom, more speed, and more sex.

What song are you into at the moment? 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Kings and Queens.”

Actor, Musician

What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? Nirvana’s Nevermind. It made me wanna be a rock star

beatmag.com 040

What are your all-time favorite albums? Why? Jimi Hendrix’s First Rays of the New Rising Sun, Nirvana’s Nevermind, and The Best of the Doors. Those albums represent legacies that should be appreciated by keeping the spirit alive and continuing the struggle. What was the worst record that you ever purchased? I think I have none. Each album makes its own impression. There’s no such thing as “bad.” Who do you want to be, other than yourself, the next time you reincarnate? I would be anyone as long as I’m still a human being (laughs). It would be good if I was me again, so I could fix all the mistakes I’ve made. What music do you start your weekend with? These days I’m hooked on this NOFX song, “Kill All the White Man.” Fat Mike rocks! (laughs) The music you choose to end your weekend? I’m in love with Hayley Williams of Paramore. I’m also much inspired by Eminem. I guess I would listen to “Not Afraid” as I get ready for the weekdays: “…I’m not afraid to take a stand…”

Abimana is busy promoting his current film, Catatan Harian Si Boy. His next movie project, Dilema, is currently in production. He also continues to pursue his musical dreams by sending demos to record labels.

By letting their lives influence their music, Marshello (vocals) and Wis (guitar) have set the swing and rock ‘n roll pace for Bali and Indonesia. Going from 2004 to 2011 and still rocking it right, Hydrant are hitting their peak, exercising full control over their grooves, as is clear from their songs ‘Dirty Thirty’ and ‘Wild Wild Boy.’ Wis’s guitar work keeps getting more magical, while the snare drums and the vocals of Mr. Marshello are high-powered. Putting two different genres of music together in a single concert program is a recipe for success. When classical music is presented alongside other musical styles, the typical choices are Broadway show tunes or jazz. As part of a cultural exchange between Indonesia and Vietnam, the choral group will be holding an additional performance in Ho Chi Minh City, in an event organized by the Indonesian embassy to Vietnam. The Mercu Buana University Choir is considered one of the most prominent university choirs in Indonesia. Since its establishment in 1988, it has focused on developing traditional Indonesian compositions into concert pieces. Over the years, the choir has made some impressive achievements, winning numerous choir competitions, including at the FEUI National Folklore Festival in 2006, 2007, and 2009, and the Telkomsel Choir Competition 2009. Last March, the MBU Choir won the 5th FEUI National Folklore Festival competition, cementing their status. For the upcoming concert in Erasmus, the choir, under conductor Agus Yuwono, will offer their audience a variety of beautiful choral compositions. Classical compositions on the program include works by Monteverdi, Schuyt, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Schuman. As for folksong, the concert will be an aural journey around Indonesia, moving from west to east through Minang, Jakarta, Semarang, Madura, Bali, and even Irian Jaya, with songs like Tak Tong Tong, Tanduk Majeng, Surilang, Janger, Montor – Montor Cilik, and many others. Some fried rice accompanied our delectable dishes, including salmon fried rice and unagi (eel) fried rice. The kimchi fried rice and garlic fried rice were quite appetizing, too. Yes, we know.We pigged out. But believe it or not, we did save some room for dessert. The favorite here is the banana flambé, and rightly so. The breaded banana is topped with vanilla ice cream, and set on fire for good effect. Scrumptious!

Some hungry friends and I wanted to see what all the buzz was about, and decided to check the For an excellent teppanyaki indulgence, Tairyo is place out for dinner. The ubiquitous little waving THE place to be. Bring a big appetite, and you’ll be cat welcomed us in, with some Japanese pop very pleased! (Budi Iskandar) music playing in the background. We sat down in front of the teppan and started our dining adventure with the sashimi. We don’t know why, but there’s just something comforting about these small cuts of fresh salmon, snapper, and tuna. We also ordered the jellyfish salad, with special ponzu sauce (Japanese soy sauce with a bit of sugar and lemon). If you’re into soup, try the spicy yasai or salmon belly miso soups. For seafood, we opted for salmon and gindara steaks, Szechuan pepper prawns, black tiger prawns, bamboo clams, and Canadian garlic oysters. All the seafood was clearly fresh. As for the meat, the enoki mushroom beef roll, French lamb chops, grilled flank bone-in, gold tenderloin steak, and onion slice fried beef tongue were all superb choices. Only the best, top-grade imported meat made it to our table, and we loved it! The teppanyaki chef expertly prepared our food right in front of us, with a little bit of flair. We had ourselves a show! You can sit at individual tables and have the waiters bring the food for you, but you’re definitely missing the whole teppanyaki experience if you do so. Most of the items are prepared with a deceptively simple mix of garlic, butter, onion, and a little bit of soy sauce, salt, and pepper. But dear God, they made everything so good! Another noteworthy dish here is the Korean raw beef: raw, spiced beef, topped with egg yolk on a bed of sliced lettuce. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we enjoyed it very much.

Don’t Mess with Texas

Food

S

ummer is the barbecue season for most people. Here in Jakarta, the summer weather lasts (almost) all year long, so anytime is a good time to grill. Okay, maybe sometimes the heat and humidity are a bit too much.Thank God for places like Q Smokehouse! Considered to be the home of the best Texas-style barbecue in town, Q Smokehouse takes its stuff seriously. One look at their top-of-the-line Southern Pride barbecue smoker grills, shipped directly from the US, and you know that they mean business. As for the wood, guess what? Who knew that locally grown rambutan and nangka wood offered the perfect complement for barbecuing? There are a trio of Q Smokehouse restaurants in Jakarta; one on Jalan Panglima Polim, one in Setiabudi One Building, and one on Jalan Suryo (Senopati) in South Jakarta. We visited the latter, which is their latest outlet, very recently. The restaurant has two sections. Both casual, both cozy. With its understated modern dĂŠcor, the room on the left as you enter is the bigger one. Wood dominates the smaller, more intimate room on the right, where you can also check out the grilling action in the kitchen. Minus the smoke, of course.

Yee haw! Welcome to the most authentic Texas-style barbecue restaurant this side of the Alamo, Q Smokehouse.

The appetizer sampler (59k) started our feast. The platter has a little something for everyone: chicken wings, quesadillas, spring rolls, and baby potatoes. We were on the right track. Next up was the smoky Reuben sandwich (42k). Traditionalists may want to compare it to the New Yorkstyle Reuben. The barbecued beef brisket and caramelized onion version is a serious contender! The sandwich is served with potato chips and a small salad. You just have to savor the most popular dish at Q Smokehouse, the Full House (99k): perfectly barbecued short beef ribs, brisket, and chicken. The meats are smoked for a good 8 to 12 hours to give them full flavor. Served with burger bun, sauerkraut, and jalapeño pepper sides, and of course, a dollop of barbecue sauce, this dish is undeniably a must try! At the time of our visit, Q Smokehouse was having a Jack Daniels Grill Promotion, offering a taste of their special homemade Jack Daniel’s glaze on any order, including the 200g Australian Wagyu rib-eye steak (199k), 300g US T-bone steak (195k), and 200g New Zealand lamb chop (135k). The aforementioned items are also available as a “Surf and Turf Deal.” For an additional 20k, you can have a salmon skewer or prawn skewer alongside your steak. All of these dishes come with potato wedges and sautéed vegetables. The Jack Daniels Grill Promotion will be on for a bit, but you should have a go at it sooner rather than later! As for beverages, Q Smokehouse has a number of favorites. The Thai iced tea and Thai green iced tea (21k each) are much loved by patrons here. Our personal favorite was the invigorating Refreshing Strawberry (25k). Using only first rate imported meat, Q Smokehouse lets you truly appreciate the fine art of barbecuing. See you there, pardner!

Hello Ghost Comedy, Drama. Writer & Director: Young-Tak Kim. Cast: Cha Tae-Hyun, Kang Hye-Won, Lee Moon-Su, Ko Chang-Seok, Jang Yeong-Nam, Cheon Bo-Keun. Sang-Man (Cha Tae-Hyun of My Sassy Girl fame) is a lonely depressed man who, after a few attempts at committing suicide, gets stuck with 4 ghosts who ask him to fulfill their last desires. A fresh and hilarious story from debut director Tak-Kim, this film has won critical acclaim at international film festivals and charmed audiences with a light plot that brings laughter and tears in equal measure. Popcorn for laughs and Kleenex for tears, anyone?

Slice does not fit in with the genres that are typical of the Thai film industry: horror, rom-com, drama. It’s the story of a serial killer preying on the rich and influential, mutilating them, and dumping their severed body parts in various locations around Thailand. A notorious hitman named Tai is released from prison on the condition that he help find the killer in 15 days. This might sound like a typical Hollywood thriller, but its gritty and audacious script have won it widespread praise. Let’s just hope the film doesn’t bring out your inner psychopath!

The Resident Thriller, Drama. Writer & Director: Antti Jokinen. Writer: Robert Orr. Cast: Hillary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lee Pace, Christopher Lee, Aunjanue Ellis. Walaupun begitu, jajaran pemain seperti Hillary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen), Lee Pace (The Good Sheperd) dan Christopher Lee (The Lord of The Rings) memberikan jaminan tersendiri untuk akting dan karakterisasi yang baik. There might not be much new in its storyline and script, but The Resident will bring you back to the classic thrillers about obsession, Fatal Attraction and Single White Female. The film concerns a divorced doctor who moves into a loft in Brooklyn and learns that her landlord has a frightening fixation on her. The masterful cast, including Hillary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) ensure a creepy atmosphere is present, even in your own apartment. For those who live alone, get ready to lock your door tightly after watching this one!

Plundering a Royal Look K

ate Middleton’s classic yet trendy look puts her at the top of my style inspiration list. Although she’s a part of the royal family now, she’s still someone that we can relate to. In a recent trip with Prince William to Canada, she was put in the spotlight, with the media dissecting her look item by item. So why do I say I can still relate to her wardrobe choices? For one, she’s not ashamed to be photographed wearing the same dress that she’s been seen in before. She was recently seen sporting an Issa bird-print dress that she wore on the night before her wedding. That’s what real women do. They don’t throw away dresses that they’ve only worn once. Also, instead of opting for some ultra high-end shoe designer, she’s often spotted with LK Bennett shoes, which cost around £200. And she wears dresses that are to die for!

So in an attempt to recreate the ‘Kate Middleton Classic Chic Look,’ we’re going to try to find an affordable version.

The Dress

The dress worn by Kate Middleton in the picture above was made by the London-based designer Erdem Moralioglu. A piece by the Canadian-born Moralioglu was the ideal choice for her visit to Canada. While his dresses can easily cost close to £1,500 each, this one comes from his resort 2012 collection, which will be available early next year. Because the dress itself is already very busy, she has accessorized with a simple nude clutch and heels. Try the look with a lace dress from Velvet Apple (http://velvetappleshop. com), which only costs Rp 195k.

The Bag

A conventional bag can be chic at the same time. This is what I imagine Kate Middleton would wear. Although the real deal, a Mulberry Polly, will cost you £850, you can find a similar bag at Urban Outfitters for $48. If you want to have something that is not too similar but inspired by the Mulberry Polly style, my pick would be the Minimal (http://minimal.co.id/) top handle in light beige, that has now been marked down to only Rp 320k!

The shoes

Kate Middleton is often spotted in a pair of LK Bennetts and this trip was no exception. Although she wears shoes by many designers, the LK Bennetts really make a connection. In the picture above, she sports a nude pair of Andie shoes, which have been discounted to £150. While hers are a pair of sling-back wedges, I think she should have picked this pair of round-toe wedges instead! These Maddox shoes cost £165.

Some books recently lent to us by the British Council, Tropenecht: Indische en Europese kleding in Nederlands-Indie by Dorine Bronkhorst D. and Esther Wils and Uit Indie Geboren by Wim Williems, Remco Raben, Edy Seriese, Liane Van Der Linden and Ulbe Bosma, offer photos and texts that shed light on the fashion items worn by kids on different occasions during tempo doeloe.

Have you ever wondered what kids wore during the tempo doeloe period of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia? Compared to women’s 1. Kids often wore them when they played, meaning that they got dirty easily. Due to that fact, today.

mothers usually kept several tjelana monjet outfits for their children. The material could range from unbleached cotton to colored and printed fabrics. For a little girl, tjelana monjet were sometimes slipped under a skirt.

Sailor suits could be bought from shops in major European cities or through mail order, but mothers usually made sailor suits themselves or with the help of djait (tailor). The styles from the European fashion magazines were adapted to the climate of the islands due to increasing demand. Sailor suits were made of lighter materials, with short sleeves or no sleeves at all.

3. School Uniform The white shirt, skirt, and pants worn as a school uniform in tempo doeloe still exist today. Mostly made of cotton, they are proper yet comfortable for children to wear every day. In some pictures from these books, the students didn’t wear uniforms to school. The girls were allowed to wear dresses while the boys simply wore short pants and a shirt. To show off their high social status, some boys wore belts made of genuine leather with brass buckles.

UD.UJI HANDOKO Hahan’s work is born from the realization that art does not merely serve a larger narrative. Hahan explores the stories of the empty spaces on paper and walls, filling them with etched images, strange creatures, and chaotic writings that take you on an adventure with a bit of humor thrown in. His production models feature factory art (complete with artisans and their workers). In today’s world, where many have forgotten the sacred values of ancient art and the old school, Hahan acts as designer, supervisor, and master. Bicycle Culture in Indonesia: 116 Years and Gounting If you’re a lover of classic bikes, don’t you dare skip “De Oude Fiets: 116 Years of Bicycle Coloring Indonesia.” Cycling culture is flourishing in Indonesian society, with fun bike, racing, and other bicycle events easy to find in every major city. This exhibition celebrates the bicycles that have coloured the lives of Indonesian communities since 1895, featuring brands such as Gazelle and Simplex from Holland, Derby from Belgium, Union from the United States, and Falter from Germany. Bikes are not only healthy and environmentally friendly, but are also a big part of the history of the Netherlands and Indonesia. A 116-year-old photograph, showing three Europeans with a bike in a photo studio, is believed to be the oldest photographic reference to bicycle culture. At that time, cycling was an exclusive hobby of the rich and famous in Europe and America. Just a few years later, during the Dutch colonial period, the bike became a symbol of identity and modernity in Indonesia, and an attribute of pride for the local bourgeoisie. The presence of bicycles as a means of transportation is a very important part of our historical narrative. Bikes have left a trail of stories behind whose pace has not slowed to this day. P

rofessor CP Wolff Schoemaker was one of the leading Dutch architects in Indonesia. During his lifetime in Indonesia, he worked as a professor at ITB Bandung, and as an architect at AIA (AlgementIngeneursArchitecten) one of the famous planning bureaus of the time. Simply put, Schoemaker was the Frank Lloyd Wright of Indonesia. Between 1910 and 1940 he designed numerous buildings in Java, including Villa Isola and Hotel Preanger in Bandung, which are among the absolute highlights of modern architecture in the first half of the twentieth century. Histories of Dutch architecture often pass over the work of Dutch architects in the former Dutch East Indies. Wolff Schoemaker was one of the central architects in Indonesia in the 1920s and 1930s, and even acted as Soekarno’s lecturer. His works was coloured by his discussions and debates on Javanese architecture with Maclaine Pont. The latter architect was trying to combine traditional Indonesian architecture with modern European forms. In his book ‘Aesthethiek en Oorsprong der Hindoekonenst op Java’ (1924), he says that the he studied Javanese culture for more than twenty years. Most of Schoemaker’s work is inspired by traditional forms. He incorporates traditional elements into structural, decorational, and fromal elements.

According to Schoemaker, each ethnic group has a traditional way of life that affects the form of their buildings, and so each has its own architecture with its own characteristics. Horizontal and vertical tendencies in India traditionally influenced the architecture of temples in Java.In temple architecture and traditional buildings, the beauty of the ornaments in the form of lines of molding are made more visible by the shadowing effects of the sun. This is a testament to the ingenuity of architects and artists of the past in exploiting the tropical sun. Schoemaker argues that the application of traditional concepts in modern architecture can produce buildings that are earthquake-resistant, suited to a tropical climate and proper air circulation. “ModernitasTropis”: Life and Work of C.P Wolff Schoemaker July 5 - September 9, 2011 Erasmus Huis Jl H.R. The Junction Last weekend, the seventh edition of The Junction house music festival stormed into town and owned it. The event was held on the high-end strip of Petitenget, with thousands of house aficionados attending. This is how The Beat saw it: Potato Head Friday Night. DJs: Recloose, Flight Facilities, Hogi, Dipha. The venue at Potato Head turned out to be the ideal place for a show of this magnitude. Flight Facility took over the decks, driving a throng of partygoers to give it their all, in an awesome show that kept peaking the crowd and culminated with their hit song, “Crave You.” Potato Head Saturday Afternoon Sunset. DJs: Crazy P, Anton, Flic. After the huge night before, a casual and relaxed atmosphere presided over the venue. It looked like someone had hung their washing out to dry and ice creams were being dished out, with chilled being the operative word. Hu’u Bar Saturday Night. DJs: Hogi, Anton, Frank Roger, Simon Dunmore. Hu’u Bar turned it on again for The Junction, with, as expected, a packed house and great sounds. It was a little claustrophobic on the dance floor for a while, but the overflow quickly spread to the outdoor area, which helped to create a really cool festival vibe. Great set from Dunmore. Woo Bar W Resort Sunday Sunset. DJs: Mamsa, Downey, Charles Webster, Dunmore. Woo Bar was the venue for the come-down After Party, but was pumping all the same, with a large crowd filling the beachside venue. Charles Webster eventually turned up, after missing flights and not arriving for the previous shows. Great tunes and chats with friends were on the menu at this one. The Junction was a great success for the organizers and the punters alike. We hope they stick to the July time-slot, instead of the previous August outings, because Bali and Seminyak needs something like this festival during this month and they just proved that the crowds will come. Bali has been at the forefront of the global electronic music scene for years, and this event, offering quality DJs, music and an spectacular set-up, will help to keep it that way for years to come.

P’s Warungclub was the place to be for the I-Mag party, which saw a wide palette of urban-inspired sounds pumping from the system. The night ended with a drum n bass and dubstep set presented by Dust n Bo. The partiers at JP’s were elated at the rare opportunity to get up to some heavier breaks.
