Now that the holy month of Ramadan is upon us, a sudden change in time has taken over Jakarta. The usual afternoon rush-hour deadlock has moved ahead an hour, and everyone seems to be rushing home to break their fasts, making traffic worse than usual. Restaurants around town have anticipated this annual phenomenon, and many are busy offering Ramadan specials and promos for those who can’t bear the stress of bumper-to-bumper gridlock. On the entertainment front, things have toned down a little, with the usual hotspots showcasing acoustic performances and resident DJs playing less aggressive beats than usual. The Jakarta scene keeps going strong during Ramadan. It’s just a little less hyper. There’s no excuse to stay at home for a whole month. Get out there and live, and don’t forget to keep a copy of TBJ close at hand so that you’re in the know about what’s going down! The next TBJ will be out in the week of Sept 5, so we’ll see you then. Have a great Ramadan and Idul Fitri holiday.

pecializing in native Betawi culture since the year 2000, Setu Babakan is a cultural preservation village of 66 hectares located in the Srengseng Sawah district of South Jakarta, close to Depok. As its name suggests (setu means small lake), Setu Babakan is bordered by a lake of 18 hectares, to which water flows from the Ciliwung River. The lake, which is the main attraction of the village, is currently used for fish farming, with more than 100 floating net cages used to breed different kinds of fish. Fishing in the lake, which is kept cool by the surrounding trees, is a popular activity, and is very calming, as is rafting. Getting to the lake requires a walk on some rather rocky footpaths, which pass Betawi traditional houses and gardens full of fruit plants that grow bananas, coconuts, and guava. Visitors can also interact with the residents of Setu Babakan, who speak the unique Betawi Malay dialect, which borrows Balinese, Sundanese, and Javanese words.

Betawi Culture: Alive and well Beyond that, there’s culinary exploration, with tempting food on offer, such as kerak telor (grilled egg with shredded coconut and sticky rice with shrimp powder topping), otak-otak (grilled fish cakes with hot peanut sauce), soto mie, soto betawi, and the popular crocodile-shaped bread used at traditional Betawi weddings and known as roti buaya. As for beverages, there’s bir pletok. This is a strong but delicious locally made Ginger Beer. A must try drink at the village. Visitors to Setu Babakan also have the opportunity to enjoy Betawi music, traditional dances, lenong (Betawi comic drama), and ondel-ondel, which is a performance featuring a giant puppet dressed in traditional Betawi costume. Setu Babakan is still a work in progress, with plans to provide parking spaces and daily performances featuring ondel-ondel and delman (horse carts) instead of yearly. (Dini Siregar)

Cycling Tips

FOR the Holy Month

M

uslims try hard to keep their activities normal during the holy month of Ramadan, but have to be especially careful about engaging in sports, which can be draining. TBJ offers you a list of cycling tips that will let you keep pedaling your way through Jakarta and still stay devoted to a whole month of fasting! (Dini Siregar)

1. Eat a square breakfast in the early morning.

During Ramadan, we replace our normal daily breakfast with a meal at Sahur time, which is just as important as the meal at the regular time. Even though it’s way past midnight and you’re still heavily sleepy, make an effort to provide a good meal for yourself that will get you through the rest of the day.

2. Push your cycling time from the morning to the

afternoon, preferably around 3 - 5pm. The late afternoon is closer to the breaking of the fast, so you won’t have to wait too long to recover from a ride on the town.

3. Before you go cycling, check out the condition of your bike’s parts. You don’t want to have a flat tire in the middle of the Jakarta heat and be forced to carry your bicycle home.

4. Relax and cycle at a moderately slow pace. Don’t

force it. There’s no need to have a set goal. Don’t be tempted by slopes that could drain your energy. Think of your ride as time to kill while waiting to break your fast.

5. Take a rest if you feel tired. Take deep breaths to refill your blood’s oxygen supply.

6. If it’s possible, take a shady route. Getting less sun will minimize the dehydration that you feel.

7. Take a route that you know. If you can calculate

your cycling time, you can make it home just in time to break your day’s fast together with family and friends!

What music are you into at the moment?

I just found my old CD on the rack, Nevermind by Nirvana. I copied all the songs to my iPod, so, yeah, I’m now listening to the whole album over and over again.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?

It was Vina Panduwinata’s 3rd album, Citra Ceria. No interesting story to tell, actually. My mom said I always sang all of Vina’s songs and so I asked her to get me one. She bought me one. I think the cassette’s gone now (sighs).

What is your all-time favourite album? Why? Frank Sinatra, Nothing but the Best. It’s EPIC.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?

None. Maybe I’m just too easily amused by anything. If many say it’s ugly, I say they just don’t like it. It’s just a matter of taste, in my opinion.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Ah, anyone. I’ve reincarnated as too many different characters already, anyway. Now let me ask you. Who do you want me to be?

What music do you choose to start your weekend? Some Britney would be alright.

And music you choose to end your weekend? Massive Attack songs are cool, don’t you think?

Sir Dandy: Satria

D

ugal. Bergajulan. Badung.

Menurutnya kekurangpiawaian

Kenyataan

Feature brutal, isu sebegitu berat disenandungkannya dengan ringan, lugas namun jelas observatif. Simak reffrain-nya: …Jakarta Motor City Semua ngebut tak terkendali Spion mobil disikat, trotoar dikangkangi Tak takut mati apalagi takut polisi…

The frontman of loud, noisy, anarchistic band Teenage Death Star, Sir Dandy Harrington, has made another brave move, publishing a solo album called Lesson #1. What makes this so brave is the fact that Sir Dandy has known how to play guitar for only three years. Sir Dandy has said that the creation of the album, which was released through Organic Records and produced by Widi Puradiredja, was like passing a national exam after three years of study. While Teenage Death Star released the jarring “Jakarta Motor City” as their first formal single, on the heels of the free-for-download “Juara Dunia,” all the compositions on Lesson #1 are folk-based. The lyrics are blunt, spontaneous, in-your-face, funny, urban, simple, light, and a bit nihilistic. Sir Dandy is not worried at all about his singing. He says that even if he fails, he is at least brutally honest and original. For further online info about Sir Dandy go check www.theone-management.com

hat better way to celebrate Indonesia’s 66th anniversary of independence than through music? Top soprano Aning Katamsi and tenor Farman Purnama, alongside pianist Cecilia Ratna, will perform with the renowned Jakarta Concert Orchestra (JCO) and the awardwinning Batavia Madrigal Singers (BMS) choir for the Symphony Concert, which will be held on August 16th at Aula Simfonia. The JCO’s Independence Day concert has been an annual tradition for several years now. For this special concert, Avip Priatna, head conductor of JCO & BMS) will once again showcase musical compositions by the most famous Indonesian composers. This year’s line-up will include songs by the dearly beloved Ibu Sud, Ismail Marzuki, Binsar Sitompul, and Guruh Soekarnoputra, as well as some legendary folk songs like Janger (Bali), Lukluk Lumbu (East Java), and Sin-sin Sibatumanikam (North Sumatra). The first half of the concert is likely to start with Beethoven’s war-inspired Coriolan Overture, before continuing with Binsar Sitompul’s Renungan di Makam Pahlawan (Soliloquy at Heroes Tomb), which will be sung by Aning Katamsi, and will close with a Cecilia Ratna piano solo and orchestral performance of Ismail Marzuki’s celebrated composition, Indonesia Pusaka (Indonesia Heirloom), which will be rearranged by Djoko Supriyanto into a fantasy for piano and orchestra. For the second half of the program, Avip Priatna is going to start with some fun melodies performed by his children’s choir, The Resonanz Children Choir. Together, they will perform a tribute to Ibu Sud, including compositions such as Menanam Jagung

(Planting Corn), Desaku (My Village), Burung Kutilang (A Thrush), and Naik Delman (Riding a Horse-Drawn Carriage), which are sure to bring back lots of great childhood memories. The fun will continue with the celebrated BMS choir, who will perform Indonesian folk songs in costumes, accompanying them with choreographed dances. The grand finale will feature Guruh Soekarnoputra’s epic medley of Simfoni Raya (Majestic Symphony) and Untukmu Indonesiaku (For You, My Indonesia). This concert offers a pleasant change form the typical Western compositions. The program that Avip Priatna has created is quite thrilling, especially in its tribute to Ibu Sud, and will take the audience on an interesting musical journey down memory lane. By Erza S.T.

he four lads from Sheffield continue their roll with their latest album. Arctic Monkeys might be the first name that comes to mind these days when British indie rock is mentioned, and not only because their debut album numbers bested those of former indie icons, Oasis. On their new album, singer Alex Turner’s gift for clever wordplay is front and center, with slower and more solid melodies dominating. There’s still plenty of youthful flair here, though, as can be seen from the rhythmic and haunting hit single “Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair.”

Knight describes the album as “a labour of love, and my tribute to heroes both celebrated and unsung.” Groovy, funky, and refreshing, Soul UK sets things up for Knight’s next album of original songs, due in 2012.

Food

APERITIVO You can never have too much quality Italian food in Jakarta. Aperitivo is a new restaurant that will SURELY win your heart.

L

ocated in the busy area of Kuningan, Aperitivo is a pleasant refuge from the hustle and bustle outside. The dĂŠcor is decidedly modern minimalist but cozy. Large windows and high ceilings dominate the interior, which is divided into two sections, one with large comfy sofas for lounging and another with simpler wooden tables and chairs for dining. Diners can relax and enjoy a meal or drink anywhere they want. Aperitivo serves a mix of hearty classic Italian bistro fare and modern creations, sometimes even becoming bold enough to incorporate local elements into classic Italian dishes. More on that a bit later. beatmag.com 050

An octopus salad, Insalata di Polipo e Patate, Peperoni Arrosto e Salsa alla Menta e Yogurt (83k) started us beautifully on our Italian journey. The dish is a nice blend of fresh octopus and potato salad with roasted bell peppers and some greens, tossed in a fresh yogurt-mint sauce. We also tried the Grigliata del Giardino Misto di Verdure all’ Olio d’Oliva, Cipolloti Caramellati e Pomodori Secchi Casarecci (57k). Quite a long name, but it features a mix of grilled vegetables on a platter, served with sundried tomatoes and extra-virgin olive oil dressing. Simple, but full of flavour.

For dessert, you just have to go with the Cannoli di Ricotta, Marmellata di Guava e Sorbetto al Cacao (58k): crunchy cylinders filled with ricotta and pistachio, accompanied by guava jelly and homemade cocoa sorbet. Ah, la dolce vita!

Aperitivo can also concoct several exciting cocktails. Try the Italian Espresso Martini (84k): vodka, amaretto, Cointreau, coffee liquor, and espresso. The La Pazzia cocktail Italiano (80k each) On to the main course, where we picked the creations, like the Da Vinci Code (Frangelico, light Costolette D’Angello alle Erbe, Patate Novelle e rum, orange juice, and passion fruit) and the Cipolle Gratinate (150k), or lamb chops in herb Sicilian Holiday (almond liqueur, light rum, orange crust with onions au gratin and baby potatoes. juice, and mango syrup) have created good buzz The herbs matched well with the perfectly cooked about the place. lamb. With Michael Bay, million-dollar cars turning into gigantic robots with cool guns and swords, Victoria’s Secret’s angel supermodel Rosie-Huntington Whiteley, lavish fashion items, and yeah, some humor, Transformers 3 pulls no punches. It might not be as deeply appealing as the first film or as chaotic as the second one, but come on, we’re talking about Michael Bay here. You don’t demand a quality storyline from him. Here, he provides plenty of great visual effects (preferably watch them in 3D), the coolest robot battle scene ever, and Rosie, with her luscious lips, bare sexy back, and supermodel legs! Calling all boys!

Fast Five Action, Thriller. Director: Justin Lin. Writers: Chris Morgan, Gary Scott Thompson. Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Matt Schulze. Just like the gears in a car, the Fast & Furious installations get speedier and more exciting as you move from first to fourth. Now, get ready to ride like never before with the fifth film in the series hitting the roads of Rio de Janeiro, bringing tense gang action, more depth for Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), and a hell of a lot of testosterone. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson also joins the race. But really, who cares, as long as the cars are zooming across the screen and your adrenaline keeps pumping from start to finish?

Kungfu Panda 2 Animation, Action, Comedy. Director: Jennifer Yuh. Writers: Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Robert Koo. Cast: Jack Black, Gary Oldman, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Jacky Chan, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Michelle Yeoh. The cute, fat, and fluffy Panda, Po, kicked ass and cracked us up in the first movie in this series. For the sequel, the Dragon Warrior Panda’s traumatic childhood is rendered beautifully, with wittier dialogue, more hilarious jokes and punch lines, and an even more eccentric villain. It lives up to the success of the first film without overpowering it. Kung fu staring contest: now!

Our New Obsession: Ikat

Forget batik for a moment. The next big thing is ikat. Even though batik has been recognized by UNESCO as representing the cultural heritage of Indonesia, ikat is taking over the hearts of many international designers. The word ‘ikat’ does not only refer to the technique of weaving this unique cloth, but the pattern that it creates. The cloth can now be found in the collections of many designers and even highstreet labels.

I

f you’re not into too much bold print or, despite designers’ love for ikat, you want something simpler, why not just go for some accessories, like a scarf or bangles? You might want to take a look at the ikat bangles and shoes that I saw at Oscar Lawalata’s show last year at JFW 10/11. Or maybe some other designer ikat accessories, like the ones here, might be the ticket.

lthough ikat prints have been on the international scene for a couple of seasons now, in Indonesia they will never go out of fashion. If you want to get in on the look, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to get a piece, because here we’ve got the widest selection of ikat (not just printed but actually woven!) to choose from. The best way to get your perfect piece is to custom order it. Here are a couple of tips: 1. Explore your options with various motifs and colours. Try different colour combinations and be adventurous when you choose them. 2. Pick textiles that are light and easy to wear. 3. Since ikat motifs are already very busy, try to choose pieces that are simple and accentuate the beauty of the textile itself.. If you want to wear clothing items with ikat prints, make sure that you keep your outfit simple. If you’re wearing a dress, don’t use accessories that are too heavy. When you wear a jacket, skirt or even pants, pair them with solid colours that are in neutral shades or black and white. Make the ikat piece the center of your look.

Keep the Shine Away In Extreme Heat IS iT JUST ME OR iS THE WEATHER GETTiNG REALLY HOT LATELY? IF YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY, HERE ARE A FEW TiPS THAT WiLL MAKE SURE THAT YOUR MAKEUP STAYS PUT, EVEN OVER A LONG DAY iN THE SUN.

1. Use setting spray to make sure that your makeup lasts longer. We don’t need to tell you again how important it is to use a makeup primer, do we? Now there’s another brilliant product that will keep your look melt-free under extreme heat. The All Nighter LongLasting Makeup Setting Spray from Urban Decay ($29) is ready to become your new best friend. It promises to keep your makeup fresh for up to 16 hours, and is produced in partnership with SKINDINÄVIA. 2. Pick loose powder that gives a matte effect and draws away all the shine from your face. appearance of pores, wrinkles, and imperfections. 3. Apply a mild sunscreen to protect you from the evil rays. Choose one that has a light texture so it’s not too oily in the heat and absorbs easily. Make sure that it is above SPF30 and gives broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB. The newest addition from L’Occitane, Angelica UV Shield SPF 40 (Rp 470k) is a great choice in the

4. Blot any sebum away with a blotting paper, because if you let it go, your face will become much oilier and your makeup will run. Choose blotting sheets made from paper so they will not remove your makeup like the ones made from film do. My current favourite is the Menard Blotting Paper, which is petite enough to fit in my small makeup case but contains 150 sheets.

Membajak TV The emergence of a new generation of video-makers are demonstrating the close links between technological advances in televised media and Indonesian culture, with a focus on three main points: technological development, the political history of televised information, and the history of video art. This cultural perspective is contrary to that of community groups, who examine television technology solely in terms of consumers, entertainment, and lifestyles. By surveying and mapping works of video art, the exhibition offers new means of providing data, information, and inspiration to the general public, exploring strategies for coexisting with television technology in a healthy manner, as well as examining the political and corporate influences on the medium. he GOOD LOOKING art exhibition shows that art is for everyone by bringing beautiful art out of the usual gallery setting and into the mall. The exhibition is being held by The Goods Dept and the Ruangrupa arts community on the 4th floor of Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta. It integrates the artistry of clothing design with paintings and other art pieces, presenting a panorama that must not be missed. There are at least 40 artists exhibiting their works through the exhibition. The event presents an exhibition-cum-shopping space where, in addition to shopping for clothes, shoes, and other accessories, guests can enjoy a uniquely artistic atmosphere. It runs for only two weeks, with all pieces on sale for prices ranging from Rp 1 million to Rp 10 million. While a bit fancier than your average Lebaran gift, the art in the exhibition is far more reasonably priced than in a traditional gallery, but offers the same level of quality and value. Art Resistance

Lives On! “Seni Membongkar Tirani is a new book by Lembaga Budaya Kerakyatan Taring Padi,a community of underground artists from Bantul, Yogyakarta. The collective formed in 1998, during the upheaval following the fall of Suharto. The book launch was held on July 30 at Galeri Cipta II Taman Ismail Marzuki. It is dedicated to people who are marginalized, and to the fighters for humanity and the environment who remain faithful to their spirit and the earth. Taring Padi are well-known for their production of cartoonlike posters involving messages of political and social justice, which are created using the

cukil (woodcut) technique on paper and canvas. In addition to their print work, they also create kinetic sculptures, street theater performances, and punk rock and techno music. After the fall of Suharto, Taring Padi occupied an abandoned art school, which they use as a residence and workspace for creating art, music, and theater. Taring Padi view art as a medium of resistance, education, and propaganda, and do not feel that all art has to be aesthetic. They argue that when the condition of society is free of oppression, a new aesthetic of art can emerge, but that under current conditions, art is more appropriately used as a means of resistance.

Art

Works by Taring Padi have been shown in many formal and non-formal settings. In May 2010, the group and its network collaborated with the people of Siring village and the surrounding area, who had fallen victim to the disastrous 2006 earthquake in the region, and commemorated the fourth anniversary of the disaster. They held etching, screenprinting, painting, and singing workshops, culminating with a carnival and people’s stage on the edge of a dam.

Peluncuran Buku “Taring Padi: Seni Membongkar Tirani” July 30, 2011 Galeri Cipta II Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jl Cikini Raya, Central Jakarta

Published by Lumbung Press and sponsored by the Ford Foundation, the group’s new book documents the radical reactions connected to Taring Padi’s art for social and political change in Indonesia. Their ongoing, collective work is progressive, inclusive, and militant.

The BAYANG exhibition presents 200 art pieces, including an impressive painting by Islamic artist AD Pirous, a 190x140cm canvas that combines pastapualam sweep, silver, and acrylic, entitled “Alif yang Menancap Bumi dan Mencuat ke Langit” (“The Alif That Stretches from Earth to Sky”). The exhibition was organized by Ikatan Alumni ITB, in conjunction with Yayasan Insaf. Its timing is no coincidence, running during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. While waiting for Maghrib, or after Taraaweeh, Muslims can view the works on display in the main building, side yard, and spaces next door. Beyond paintings, sculptures and other threedimensional works adorn the gallery. For example, Tisna Sanjaya presents a piece entitled “Religious System of Capital”, which is an actual full-scale house with rusty tin walls and a domed mosquestyle top. Bamboo poles stick up into the sky around

it, with a clothes line hanging clothes at the edges. Plastic garbage heaps surround the house. Is this a critique of Islam? Visitors can interpret it as they like. It is interesting to see how the artists, all of whom are Muslim, give their own forms of aesthetic expression to their works, from the direct use of Islamic symbols to more universal forms requiring a deeper reading. Accomodation jakarta

ASTON Rasuna Regular Jakarta tripper, Chef Phil Mimbimi takes us through a stay at the Aston Rasuna in Kungingan.

T

he Aston’s front-door drop off is a bit of a swing-around when you come in from the main road. Of course, with security blockades being the norm in Jak-Town, confusion is unavoidable. Here, you roll up a hill and then back down past the front to the security check and you’re in. Baggage pull is a mix between security and a random bellperson. Somehow, it all seems to get in. The check-in counter is constantly busy, which is a healthy sign, and the agents are, for the most part, professional and courteous. Usually there is a quick check performed by housekeeping to ensure that the room is ready. Most of the time, if there’s some sort of a hitch, it means a complimentary beverage at the lobby lounge bar and 20 or so minutes later, off you go to the room. Elevator service is definitely not one of the

beatmag.com 074

strong points of this establishment. Out of three elevators, one hits only odd-numbered floors, another hits only even-numbered floors, and the middle one doubles as the service elevator and hits all the floors. This can cause delays, confusion, and frequent long waits for a lift. The double bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. (Singles and triples are also available) They are bright and offer sun windows overlooking the other towers, the pool, or a bit of the mega-city. The showers are consistently strong, though the towels are a bit meek. The kitchen area is decent and the refrigerator size is quite comfortable. Kitchens are equipped with a water dispenser and microwave, and these amenities come in handy. Room service has its ups and downs, though. It seems that the tuna spring

bali

rolls and satay are quite popular and are thus often unavailable or sold out. The pastas are mostly good. Sop Buntut and Soto Ayam are guaranteed winners and the previously mentioned appetizers are great when you can get them! The rest of the dishes seem to be a bit off the mark. The TV and cable systems in the rooms are topcaliber and well placed. Getting the Internet set up can be bit bumpy, but mostly without a fuss. The sofas in the living room are comfortable and the beds are very cozy. The air-conditioning seems to be able to get the room down to a consistently cool temperature, which is relieving coming in from the traffic and heat of the big city. Overall, for the location, it’s quite a decent stay. Getting a space that’s as luxurious as one of the numerous 5-star hotels can easily break the bank.

I like the sense of staying in a place that seems more like a condo or apartment that’s been lived in. The cleanliness gets by on its own and the spaciousness gives you the room to spread out. Its location and ease of getting in and out make the Aston a recommended mid-level accommodation spot in town. Verdict: An all round winner.

Food reviewbali

Big Things Brewing

With a staggering array of high-quality beers and cocktails at reasonable prices, mouth-watering cuisine, and a funky, laidback beer garden ambiance, Brewer’s is a winner.

Beer gardens are popping up everywhere these days in Bali, with most focusing on creating the perfect setting. While this is admirable, a proper beer terasse should also have a few more tricks up its sleeve, which Brewer’s certainly does. Serving Beck’s, Stella, Hoegarden, Peroni, Leffe, and Erdinger (to name just a few), the brasserie also makes all of its signature cocktails and every single item on the menu with, you guessed it, beer.

beatmag.com 076

Food While the idea of an entire menu centered on the amber nectar might feel like overkill, at Brewer’s everything is done so smoothly that you begin to wonder why more places don’t follow a similar philosophy. The beer is cooked thoroughly, allowing the alcohol to escape, so there’s no worries if you’re bringing the little ones or don’t like to indulge.

stout, and brown sugar, and the layers of biscuit and mousse take it to another level.

We arrive and decide to sit in the cozy but hip downstairs area, which has plush booth seating and tables overlooking the action on busy Legian Street. We get right into it, trying out a Jagerbomb (54k), a Sour Lips cocktail (44k), and a rich chocolate milkshake (30k). What comes out right away is how well blended things are at this place. The Jagerbomb, a shot of Jagermeister dropped into beer infused with ginger, hits you nicely but is smooth enough for those who like a mellower flavor. The Sour Lips is a bit reminiscent of a cream soda, and while the booze is clearly there, it’s not overpowering. We also try a Rose Lychee Pilsen (39k) which has a dominant lychee flavor and a good bit of bite to it. Next, a crisp Beck’s (70k) is perfectly matched with some Buffalo beer wings (39k), which tip their hat to the hot wing’s birthplace with a tangy, buttery blend of subtle spiciness (chili addicts can request that things be kicked up). We then move on to the mashed beer burger (65k): two perfectly grilled patties stuffed with a rich potato mash alongside a fresh salad drizzled with vinaigrette. Our next dish, the similarly named beer burger, is what well-done should be. It’s juicy and flavorful, presented with a stack of french fries and a creamy aioli dipping sauce, the mild, rich cheese blending in perfectly with the toppings and fresh bun. The highlight, though, is the stout tuna teriyaki (60k), which is perfectly seared in tangy sauce, the inside melt-in-yourmouth rare, and comes nestled on a bed of ripe sliced tomatoes and crisp lettuce, stripes of creamy lemony sauce keeping it company. This is one you might have trouble sharing. To round things off, we try an apple cinnamon raisin filo (50k) and the big surprise, a “beeramissu” (40k), which despite its unusual name, turns out to be one of the best takes on a tiramisu any of us has had. It has hints of coffee,

Brewers BeerGarden: Jl Legian No 157 +62 361 754 915 Kuta

Thoroughly satisfied, we move to the upstairs terrace with another round of cervezas, discovering a hidden rooftop oasis. As a band plays and the place starts to fill up, we drift off into the night, bellies full and expectations surpassed.

fter rocking Jakarta the week before, California-based band Neon Trees headed to Bali to give fans at Hard Rock Café a dose of their pop-tinged sounds. Frontman Tyler Glenn and his crew performed a total of 14 songs while the crowd mobbed the front row to get closer to the energetic vocalist who sometimes was boardering on the downright absurd. The band played all the hits from their first album ‘Habits’ plus a few, but appeared to lack a bit of energy at stages, and the vocals were a bit wanting at times too. They have a lot of show but maybe more huff than puff.

whole lot of shaking went down at Hu’u the other night, as Canadian urban trio, Keys N Krates unveiled a combination of live instrumentation and turntable skills. Midnight saw the three musicians hit the stage, mixing it right on the packed dance floor snuggling up close with the punters. Center stage were a drum set and keyboard rack, which the trio mashed up bass-heavy hip hop tunes all night long with the help of tracks from the decks. Good urban mashup and squash up.
