The heat in Jakarta continues to rise! This statement can be taken in two different prospective, first, the scorching heat of the day is getting unbearable at times as the mercury continues to rise at the height of summer and secondly, the number of hot shows and perfromers making their way to Jakarta just gets more exciting as months go by. Just look at the clubbing event options in this edition’s What’s On section, and add to that the many open air events going down in Jakarta. This September is filled with an assortment of major events, featuring an array of different styles of music from, soul, rock to dance. And this trend will continue on until the end of the year. So, keep partying Jakarta, and keep your copy of TBJ close at hand! We’d like to thank all those who came along to the beat Jakarta Sunday BBQ last week at Liquid Exchange – we’ll be back soon. Jakarta semakin panas!

DJ Gallant Immigrant | Wed 21 sept | 10PM Sounds Like Electro Chill, Nu Disco, Jazzy House, House, Deep Tech, Progressive, Trance Hails From Jakarta, Indonesia Has Been This dedicated DJ took his first steps into the world of DJing at the tender age of fourteen, after coming in third in the Indonesia Junior DJ Festival. Named as one of the top five DJs at the Indonesia DMC DJ Festival, his choice of career seems firmly cemented, and he’s now busy remixing four singles which he recorded in the US. In 2002, Gallant joined Demajors as a talent instructor, and the following year started up the SOVA live PA project. Changing his name to DJ Gen to release his album ‘Tempotantrum Retouched’, he went on to start up his own DJ Management and Party Organizing company called Mixologee, which was responsible for launching the careers of such DJs as Milinka, Devina, Dikaa and many others. Leaving the world which made him famous in 2007 to pursue other opportunities, the call of dance music was hard to resist and he returned in 2009 to man the decks of Bibliotheque, before moving to become the music director at Kampus Jakarta the following year. Gallant is currently a member of Filter Management. is Now Gallant will share the decks with other talent from FFunk including Bimo, Pierre, Mahesa Utara and Fanny at Immigrant on the 21st of September. His quality as a DJ is assured, having shared the decks with numerous big name local and international DJ superstars. Don’t miss his performance at Immigrant.

LMFAO Istora Senayan | sat 24 sept | 10PM Sound Like Electro-Pop, Dance-Pop
Hail From California, USA
Have Been This quirky duo was formed back in 2006 in Los Angeles by DJ/Dancers Redfoo and Skyblu, who apparently are descendents of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy. Their party themed rhythms have created a new kind of genre which has been dubbed ‘party rock’. The acronym ‘LMFAO’ is better known as an expression amongst the Instant Messenger community, but in this case it actually stands for ‘Loving My Friends And Others’. Their first full album was released in 2009, and the debut single ‘I’m in Miami Bitch’ reached #51 on the Billboard Hot 100, going on to be nominated for a Grammy Award. LMFAO’s sophomore album, ‘Sorry for Party Rocking’ gave rise to the chart topping hit ‘Party Rock Anthem’ which has become a must play track at clubs around the globe, and has hailed the return of the shuffle dance. They have gone on to win the SCBA Award for ‘Best Shufflers’, and took out the ‘Best New Artist’ category at the recent Hip Hop Nation Awards. are Now Apart from Java Soul Nation 2011, the arrival of LMFAO has been a much talked about event amongst dance music lovers in the capital. The duo will hit the stage of Istora Senayan on the 24th of September, so get your dancing shoes on and show us your best shuffle!

Mike’s Elbow Room | Wed 28 sept | 10PM Sound Like 90’s Alternative Rock Hail From Jakarta, Indonesia Have Been The band was formed back in 2005 by members Dendy (vocals), Udin (guitar, vocals), Marko (D-Box percussion, vocals), and Bagus (bass). Their concept of live acoustic sees the band performing songs by such bands as Radiohead, U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Coldplay, various local bands and even the legendary The Beatles in all their acoustic glory. The musical prowess of the guys is undeniable - Dendy was once a member of Kunci band, while Udin the guitarist was a part of Ten2Five. Mike’s Apartment - sometimes simply known as ‘Mike’s’- are well known on the Jakarta café scene, and by performing from stage to stage, they have slowly built a fanbase that duly follows wherever they go.
Have Been Siapa yang tidak kenal dengan Mike’s yang dulunya bernama Mike’s Apartment, salah satu band dengan format akustik yang sangat kental dengan genre alternative rocknya. The Halal Bihalal
After Lebaran Now that Idul Fitri had passed, it’s time for the annual Halal Bihalal dinner or lunch, where you socialize with your friends or family members. Holding a dinner or lunch party can be very overwhelming to the host sometimes, to the point where it can be hard to enjoy the occasion as it unfolds. Here are some ideas to ensure that your dinner/lunch party runs smoothly and is relatively stress-free.
1
Make a list of who to invite. If it’s possible, invite a reasonable amount of people, not a horde. You won’t have time to talk to them all and you will find it hard to prepare for a large group of people on your own. Check with your guests to learn about any food allergies or dislikes. It is unpleasant for you and awkward for a guest who tells you at the last minute that they are allergic to your main course or that they are vegetarians and you’ve prepared nothing they can eat!
4
Make space. Here are some things to consider in making some space for a dinner/lunch party: •Get pets out of the way. A meandering cat or an over-enthusiastic dog can be a real pest! •Ask your children to make the minimum visits to the kitchen. It’s a good idea to have meals for children prepared in advance and heated quickly if they’re not actually participating in the dinner party. Have them eat in the TV room or bedroom.
2
5
3
6
Plan well in advance. Planning will reduce a huge amount of stress. Decide on your menu, taking into account your guests’ preferences and your theme if you have one. Use detailed lists of groceries you will need for food preparation.
Plan a menu with prepare-ahead parts. Avoid making a menu that requires everything to be prepared and served immediately, or you will never leave the kitchen. In recipe books or websites for recipes, look for the notation ‘can be prepared in advance’.
beatmag.com 038
Make a good first impression. Provided you greet everyone happily, and the place looks ready and buzzing with anticipation when the guests arrive, they’ll fail to notice little mistakes during the rest of the day/night.
Relax. If you do the preparation work, everything will run smoothly and you can enjoy the rest of the event with peace of mind. Also enjoy your hard work meal, and socialize for the sake of Halal Bihalal! (Dini Siregar)

STEVIE ITEM Guitarist, Music Producer
What music are you into at the moment? “It Must Really Suck to Be Four Year Strong Right Now” by Four Year Strong. What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? Back when I was still in 4th or 5th grade I bought the Jason Donovan & Kylie Minogue album, which contained the song “Especially For You”. It was a big hit at the time, so I went to the record store and bought the album. But as soon as I got out off the store I got mugged by the local punks. They took my money and the cassette, so I walked home on foot - I didn’t even have money to take a bus. So every time I listen to that song, it brings me back to that incident. I didn’t buy any more albums until 6th grade, but by then I was totally into thrash metal. My first thrash metal album was Obituary’s ‘Cause of Death’, and then Sepultura’s ‘Beneath the Remains’. During that era, every time I saw albums with blood, gore, or evil-impressions on the cover, I just bought it instantly without thinking twice. What is your all-time favourite album? Why? It has to be Faith No More’s ‘Angel Dust’ or Megadeth’s ‘Rust In Peace’ because I know most of the lyrics. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Big Dumb Face. It’s the side project band of Wes Borland - he’s the guitarist of Limp Bizkit. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? A better looking Rick Rubin or a healthier Tony Stark. What song do you choose to start your weekend? ‘Next Door, Dead Whore’ by The Shattering. And song you choose to end your weekend? ‘Communications’ by The Cardigans.

True Man’s Opera

ost women want one, most men want to be one, but what does it take to be a true man. For Maestro Ananda Sukarlan, this is the theme of his newest opera called ‘Laki – Laki Sejati’ (A True Man). Laki – Laki Sejati is a comic mini opera that is composed for just one soprano, one mezzosoprano and a male pianist. This less then half an hour opera plot is quite simple, focusing on a mother who is talking about about what a real man is with her daughter. Despite being short, there is still room for a surprising twist at the end. This opera libretto is based on Putu Wijaya’s short story of the same title. Putu has written over 1000 short stories, and is known affectionately as “Father of Short Stories”. The opera has been commissioned by Bimasena – The Mines and Energy Society, and the first public world premiere is scheduled for the 29th September 2011 at Erasmus Huis. Young and talented soprano Evelyn Merrelita and mezzosoprano Indah Pristanti will star in this unique pocket opera accompanied by the composer who is a highly accomplished pianist himself. These two singers were the winners of the Ananda Sukarlan Vocal Award 2011.
However on 29th September, the program will also include several of Ananda’s virtuosic piano works. He also going to perform a new vocal piece called “Retweeting @aanmansyur” with the winner of the Ananda Sukarlan Vocal Award male voice category: Adi Nugroho. This new piece is based on Twitter poems made by Aan Mansyur – a prominent Makassar poet. Could this be the first art song based on tweets? Calling all opera and classical music lovers… This is one performance that is surely not to be missed!

his year might well be THE year for this indiefolk band and their quietly stormy tunes. Their entire album, for a short time, was accidentally made available for sale too early on iTunes, no doubt helping them make it to number four in the UK charts on it’s the first week of release. Bon Iver’s self titled album makes a pleasing noise if you’re into folk, acoustic or even a little bit of rock. “Minnesota, WI,” ambles along nicely with banjo, sax, flutes and a bit of pedal steel guitar thrown into the mix. The other songs are a journey of introspective, earthy and gloomy chants to soak up and warm yourself on a winter’s day.

alib Kweli keep things real - let’s just say he’s not known for money, cars, gangsters or misogynistic stories. Knowing his highly educated family background, it’s no wonder his flow speaks wisdom - street wisdom to be exact. Blunt facts and poetic protests litter the album, like in the song ‘Gutter Rainbow’ where he champions a “voice for the voiceless, and hope for the hopeless”. Musically the whole thing is a step up from previous albums, thanks to producers like 88-Kys, M-Phazes, and Marco Polo. For those who are expecting another dance-urban mix, this is not for you. Kweli remains resolutely artsy, with a profound maturity running through the thread of each song.

elcome to Madeleine, a new French bistro in Jakarta. This restaurant is located at the back of the stylish Decorum interior decoration store, inside the Kemang89 building. Careful, don’t mistakenly sit on the furniture on sale there! At first glance, Madeleine looks sophisticated and boutique-ish, yet it is very cozy and un-intimidating. There are of course Parisinspired decorations on the wall, but the banana trees outside the windows are reminders that you are still in the tropics. Recently we visited Madeleine and took an epicurean journey to France. We started with entrÊes like the Casear Salad with Crispy

Olive Madeleine (55k), and the Seafood Vol Au Vent (65). Of the latter, the spinach and béchamel complimented the puff pastry well. The hearty Roasted Pumpkin Chowder (40k) hit the just right spot, with the soup served with chicken and apple celery rillette topped with cinnamon foam. But no visit to a French restaurant is complete without having some of the escargot; and the Madeleine Escargot (65k) certainly won our approval. The succulent garlicky buttered snails are served with duxell Madeleine and sundried tomato tapenade. It is a twist on the old classic which was presented very handsomely. We love it!
Make sure that you leave room for the delicious desserts! At Madeleine, the dessert doubled as palate cleanser and visual teaser, too. May we suggest the Trio Madeleine Cake: assorted flavour of nuts, chocolate, and raspberry madeleine cakes with chocolate fondue, and the Madeleine’s Mousse (40k): Strawberry, white chocolate, and blueberry mouse in a cannelloni tuile. These oh so delectable desserts are priced at 40k each. But there was one other dessert item that is very noteworthy. You should ask to have the Semifreddo. moking Joe’s is a St. Louis based eatery that recently opened its doors to the hungry Jakarta public. In the last five months, they have gained popularity as the place to go for prime quality Memphis-style barbecue fare. Located inside The East building in Mega Kuningan, this barbecue joint has already become a favourite meeting place for business types, but families and couples will also feel at home here. The restaurant is roomy and cozy, and the adjoining bar is inviting. Smoking Joe’s pride themselves on their slowsmoked barbeque so much, they shipped a oneton smoker directly from St. Louis. They take traditional American barbecue and step it up a notch by smoking all their meat using wood from locally grown jackfruit trees. Original chef and founder Joe Rozelle’s savoury secret rub of herbs and spices guarantee a barbecue experience straight out of America’s heartland. Making sure to keep the locals happy, Smoking Joe’s in Jakarta practices Halal cooking methods, by separating its cooking equipment for non-halal items. Something that is good to know.
Food Some BBQ Beef Nachos (49k) started us off nicely. There’s just something about warm corn tortillas, chunks of beef in BBQ sauce, jalapeño peppers, and melted cheese that is very comforting. There’s a pork version also, should you feel like it.We also loved their Hot Buffalo Chicken Wings (49k). The fried chicken wings are smothered with sweet and tangy buffalo sauce, and are served with crudités with a side of ranch or blue cheese dip.

Death stalks us at every turn, and you can’t cheat it. When your time is up there’s not much you can do about it according to this popular horror franchise. The storyline of the fifth installment of the Final Destination ouevre sticks with the same formula as always, but who cares about that - it’s the new bonechilling gruesome ‘death penalty’ scenes that fans are always waiting for. Prepare for the said-to-be best FD yet, with plenty of the cast meeting their maker in a range of chillingly original ways. For the fainthearted, prepare your blindfold just in case!
Rise of the Planet of The Apes Sci-Fi / Action / Thriller. Director: Rupert Wyatt. Writers: Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver. Cast: James Franco, Freida Pinto, Andy Serkis, John Lithgow, Tom Felton, David Oyelowo.
Whilst working on a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, a scientist (James Franco, 127 Hours) genetically enhances a chimpanzee who goes on to become super intelligent. A single act of both compassion and arrogance leads to a war between humans and apes in a spectacle that will blow you away. A definite contender for film of the year, this flick features the most stunning visual effects yet, from CGI apes to incredible action sequences that will leave you breathless. So do we kiss and make up with our primate cousins or are we heading for WW3? Go see for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.
Good Neighbours Thriller / Crime. Writer and Director: Jacob Tierney. Cast: Jay Baruchel, Scott Speedman, Xavier Dolan, Emily Hampshire, Gary Farmer.
Victor (Jay Baruchel, Fanboys) is new to Montreal, and attempts to make friends with his new neighbours - the wheelchair-bound Spencer (Scott Speedman, Underworld), and the lovely Louise, but everybody is on edge while a serial killer is terrorizing the neighbourhood. The three stay at home for safety, but the more they get to know each other, the more dark secrets about each of their characters is revealed. Adapted from the well-known novel of the same name, Good Neighbours is an atmospheric and claustrophobic yarn that will keep you guessing. Now are you sure your neighbours at home are as good as they seem?

olka dots are one of Diane von Furstenberg’s forte prints this year, presented on statement blazers, sequined gowns, and of course wrap dresses. We are also seeing dots implemented beyond just prints, such as lattice holes on a peekaboo dress. Marc Jacobs is all about polka dots. They pop up in sizes big and small, adorning his ‘secretary look’ collections, from pencil skirts, hourglass-waist suits, dresses, vinyl berets, and hosieries. The applications are equally diverse; there are dots printed on fur, shiny discs embossed on bonded wool, and plastic coins sewn onto plastic skirts, mimicking fish scales. Marni’s take on polka dots is subtler, more retro, and more uniform. The identical circle pattern shows up on blouses, skirts, shift dresses and peacoats, often clashing with a recurring geometrical pattern. Last yet a personal favourite, Stella McCartney, showed us a modern and feminine line with polka dots embroidered onto tulles, whether on dresses or shirts, combined with loose trousers, or peeking behind blazers. She also insets sheer dotted fabric into sexy, figure-hugging black dresses. Let’s not forget the dot clutch either - it’s the perfect finishing detail for the look! Can’t wait to update your wardrobe? Here are a few retail pieces to give you some ideas. Dorothy Perkins Yellow Spot Burnout Skirt and Dorothy Perkins Navy Polka Dot Smock Dress. Body Massage
The recommended signature treatment from Rumah Cantik Citra is the body massage. It is said that Rumah Cantik Citra’s body massage combines various techniques which are Japanese shiatsu, Thai massage and Hawaiian lomi-lomi to calm and pamper the body. The description sounded tempting so I chose to enjoy the body massage during my visit to Rumah Cantik Citra. After registering at the front desk, I was asked to wait for a moment while the therapist prepared the treatment room. While waiting, my skin condition was checked using a skin analyzer machine. The machine showed me the grade of my skin pigmentation, moisture and elasticity. Not long after the skin check, I was called and guided to the treatment room. At first, my feet were soaked in warm water infused with lime and peppermint, and then scrubbed and washed. Before beginning the massage, my therapist pulled my hands and feet one by one,
gently but successfully stretching them out. The massage didn’t involve too much pressure but it was quite relaxing. The therapist used Citra body lotion, which is quickly absorbed into the skin and doesn’t leave a sticky coating. However, the wonderful smell of the Citra body lotion still lingered until about an hour after the treatment. I could sense that the massage technique and movement were a bit different than the usual Javanese massage. The combination of Japanese shiatsu, Thai massage and Hawaiian lomi-lomi in Rumah Cantik Citra’s Body Massage worked well, and after the 45 minutes of treatment I felt quite relaxed and invigorated. T
here is a consideration that an art exhibition is an effort to demonstrate the development of aesthetic culture, artistic achievement, technical skills and the mindset of a person or a group of beautiful art in a space and time. Therefore, the art gallery serves as a performance space that has the vision and mission in at least three things: appreciation, consumption and responsibilities. That is why art galleres summarize the impressions between economic capital, symbolic capital, morality and faith. With that consideration, since last year, Emmitan CA Gallery have been hosting the art exhibition titled ‘Homo Ludens’, with a series of different topics. They put forward this exhibition as an annual exhibition by inviting a number of beautiful art from various creative fields from Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Bali, and Surabaya. The exhibitions feature art works in various media, such as oil on canvas, photography, video art and 3D (resins, solid metal). The overall effect provides us with a convincing comparative perspective that human beings are not fools who are unable to decide what is good, what is right, and what they need for their lives. It may be true that at this moment, in this visual century, nobody can fully escape from spectacles, images, and representations. This is what happens when there is a conspiracy under the name of general aesthetic; art is
Takin Back conquered by the real world. At the same time, there are viewers, who, driven by their willingness to understand everything timelessly, destroy their own culture in a second. They really destroy a reality which they do not understand at all, whereas their culture is merely an epiphenomena of global circulation. This exhibition will not just be a meeting room for a variety of artists from different regions, generations, but also a creative event to see and understand the aesthetic developments and artistic achievements, engineering capabilities and cutting-edge mindset of Indonesian art. That contemporary art is a world that has not been completely understood, particularly in this country, is not only an argument but also a fact that demands us to get deeper in it.

awen Awak Visual Art Exhibition, an art celebration that unites Foreign and Balinese artists, is meant to strengthen the collaborative spirit of foreign artists who have chosen Bali as a creative space, together with today’s Balinese contemporary artists. This exhibition aims to strengthen the cross-cultural way it has been pioneered ever since the twenties, by inviting foreign artists to work in Bali today, side by side with Balinese artists. Looking at their daily social interaction it conveys a portrait of mutually strengthening cross dialogue. It is intended for artists who in daily life live and grow in a global circuit. Meanwhile Bali, as a space entity, constantly offers her inner self. The synergy of mutual gesture strengthens as well as increases the plurality of visual ideas and concept treasures of Balinese contemporary art. The foreign artists that join this exhibition are a line of artists who consider Bali as a spiritual space that holds infinate intuitive mystery. Meanwhile Balinese artists in this
Art
exhibition are represented by young artists such as Susena, Wirantawan, TejaAstawa, Purwa, AdiGunawan and AgusSuyadnya - a group who identify, study, and question tradition. Bali has become a balanced space for admiration, critical power, and also the trigger of creative life power. It has become the marker that unites foreign and Balinese artists in creative energy and also artistic concepts of belief. To put side by side creative views and achievements of Western artists together with Balinese artists is the objective, hoping to remind us that in the past there was friendly collaboration and interaction
between both cultures. Even though there is a slight difference in behaviour there is certainly various guarded collaboration patterns, either in the daily social arena, or in the form of art celebration.

iloufar means lotus or water lily in Persian and one look at this beautiful villa will tell you why. Lily ponds form the roof and surround the villa, which gives it a very tranquil atmosphere as well as insulating the room below from the tropical sun.
Located down a private road just a tad bit North of Canggu, Niloufar Villa has the best of both worlds, seclusion from the outside world and a relatively easy commute to town. The villa itself is perched on a hillside with a beautiful flowing river below. The five-bedroom pavilion layout follows the contours of the landscape and features multiple levels which give the villa a very natural feel. Built with locally sourced building materials that feature river stone walls and giant stone sinks, the villa possesses clean lines that are almost minimalist but melds seamlessly with a more organic design theme. Each room features large colourful neo-expressionist painting that could have been painted by Basquiat.

Along with an ample common area and both swimming and reflecting pools, the villa boasts a TV room fitted with a projector screen. It also features a fully staffed kitchen ready to cook three meals a day, and a private car is always on standby. Dava
Food review
A jewel in the crown of the lushious vast Ayana Resort, Dava r e s ta u r a n t o f f e r s modern fine dining in an impeccable setting.
Restaurant Dava Restaurant Jl Karang Mas Sejahtera, Jimbaran Tel : 702 222
Finding Dava, a restaurant nestled in the bosom of the beautiful Ayana Resort, is an experience in itself. Golf carts whisk visitors to an enigmatic entrance, which opens onto a reception area floating on a glassy pond overlooking the Indian Ocean. Follow the stone pathways over the water, go down some stairs and through a set of doors, have a passing look at the vintages on offer in the glass-fronted, temperaturecontrolled wine cellar, and you are in the restaurant itself. The hip, modernist-inspired interior is laid out on a circular plan, surrounded by waterways that open up to the endless vista of the ocean. In the background, chilled out lounge music plays, creating the perfect atmosphere for a martini or two. Dava has a long list of signature martinis. We try two of the recommended house specialties, the oddlynamed Bloody Bucket (190k) and the Espuma Red beatmag.com 080
Food Ruby Champagne (290k). These are luxury drinks to be sure, and they more than deliver. The bucket - an up-to-date take on the bloody mary - is spiced up with wasabi and topped with reverse emulsified sucro, presenting a perfect smooth blend. The out-ofthe-ordinary champagne cocktail is really something, with gracefully layered raspberry bellini and raspberry champagne resulting in a complex presentation that is topped off with blueberry caviar. It is almost as impressive to watch it being made as it is to drink. Almost.
The meal continues with a juicy slice of roasted grouper, presented on a tangy gratin of brioche crumbs and fennel confit, swimming in bouillabaisse. The dominant anise-like fennel aroma of the broth is a perfect match for the soft, perfectly cooked grouper, which has been lightly flavored to allow the natural meaty taste of the fish to stand out.
The next course is a crab cake with avocado gazpacho and garlic confit. The meaty crab has a bisque-like flavour, accentuated by cool avocado and mild garlic. Each course on the degustation menu offers just enough to keep you satisfied and wanting more. The dishes are so beautifully presented that it’s almost a shame to dig in, but who can help it when food like this is on offer?
With a winning line-up of fresh, ever-changing dishes, the kitchen at Dava offers a flawless dining experience in high style, which should earn it a place on everyone’s itinerary.
