alice cooper EX Park, Plaza Indonesia | fri 7 oct | 8PM Sounds Like Shock Rock Hails From Detroit, USA
Has Been Vincent Damon Furnier started as the singer of an early 70’s, and very successful band called Alice Cooper and after the band broke up he kept the name for himself. Born in Detroit ‘rock’ city, Vincent was surrounded by the essence of rock music, but expressed himself through the sounds of art rock, experimental rock and garage rock. After being involved in a chicken dismembering incident on stage he created a new genre which became known as ‘shock rock’. Cooper combined many theatrical elements to his performances giving the audience plenty to think about with his wild stage antics. A legend in his own right, Alice Cooper has influenced other musicians such as NY Dolls, KISS and Marylin Manson. After releasing 25 studio albums and 46 singles with hits like ‘School’s Out’, ‘Elected’ and ‘Only Women Bleed’ and appearing in countless movies, Alice Cooper has become a cultural icon. Is Now Many Alice Cooper fans have waited a long time to see this legend take to the stage in Jakarta, and finally they get their chance. In conjunction with Hard Rock Café Jakarta’s 19th anniversary, Alice Cooper will perform at eX Park, Plaza Indonesia as part of his ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy’ world tour. He will perform alongside guitarist Orianthi and share the stage with AIRS (All Indonesian Rock Superstar).
No More Mr. Nice Guy Tour’. Ini bukanlah mimpi! Kalau Anda penggemar musik cadas, jangan sampai terlewatkan konser ini.

Hails From Alex Gaudino: Italy Tensnake: Germany

While taking care of her several restaurants Janet has also managed to churn out two top cook books called ‘Fragrant Rice’, and ‘Bali: The Food of My Island Home’. However, she is best known for being the founder of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, which has been running for the last eight years and will be on again next week from October 5 to 9.
What music are you into at the moment? I adore Brazilian Jazz and am perpetually into this sort of music at the moment. It makes me purr and dance all at once! When I am answering a mountain of festival emails, I can easily listen to it and still get my work done happily. What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it? It was probably Cat Stevens’ Tea for the Tillerman. I was so totally in love with Cat Stevens and thought everything about him, from his face to his music, was sheer perfection. Well, I was a teenager after all! I remember spending entire weekends just listening over and over and over to his songs! My brother used to buy me records too, but only because he wanted them himself! I think Cream was the first one he bought for me when I was young. I had no idea at the time who they were! What are your all-time favourite albums? Where to start or rather, how to choose. I love so many. Dire Straits’ ‘Making Movies’ because ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is one of my all-time fav songs. Crowded House, Santana, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Kate Bush’s Aerial, Maroon 5, Sérgio Mendes, Oscar Castro-Neves, Sade, Michael Jackson, Elton John’s ‘Tumbleweed Connections’, The Rolling Stones, The Black Eyed Peas, Paul Kelly. Sometimes I listen to old albums because it takes me back to another time, another space; good times and sad. What was the worst record you ever purchased? I’d have to think about that! I probably gave it away. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Probably my dog! He just eats and sleeps, plays in the garden, chases butterflies (and other cute dogs) and everyone loves him! He is cuddled all day, every day. Lovely!
Otherwise, I want to return as someone fabulous in Paris in the late 1800’s when the Eiffel Tower had just been constructed and art, photography, food and fashion was blossoming and the world was opening up. What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy? I am reading ‘Anna Karena’. Richard Flanagan told me, “It’s probably my favourite love story,” and suggested I read it. I am only a few chapters in, but so far, so good!! It has that ‘real literature’ grand sense about it, where the characters are solid and the language is not over-worked. And there’s that inevitable feeling of doom around the corner. I will tell you the score when I have finished!! My alltime fav book is Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’. Everything about it is extraordinary! What new movie should people see? Why? I have to confess, I hardly ever watch movies nowadays! So I am the last person to ask. The last one I saw was ‘Rabbit-Proof Fence’ and the main character reminded me so much of my daughter, Dewi, that I cried for days and days after seeing it. What album do you choose to start your weekend? I love the fun and upbeat sounds of The Black Eyed Peas or Sérgio Mendes’ ‘Encanto’. All optimism and happy vibes! And song/album you choose to end your weekend? Oscar Castro-Neves’ ‘Live at the Blue Note Tokyo’. It has that gentle, mellow and sensual Brazilian beat that lulls me into and out of a lazy Sunday. First a brunch of Eggs Florentine, a breezy afternoon, a twilight sip of wine and then Castro-Neves! Mmmmm!

T
Here comes another soulful, amazing, honeyvoiced chanteuse on the Indonesian music scene: Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Jemima. With a mix of Malaysian, Japanese, Javanese, and Chinese blood, this mutli-cultured beauty has just released her self-titled debut album.
In this sensual soul-oriented album Jemima is not only the singer, she’s also the producer, writer, arranger, even plays keyboard. Her friends, Fajar Adi Nugroho, Torank Ambarita, and Aditya Wibowo, support her for the rest of the album, taking care of the bass, guitar and drum department.
Released by Demajors Independent Music, her first ever track ‘Musik Sepi’ was a protest song about the music situation in Indonesia. The song itself was based on her view about the current music scene that she saw right after she just got back from the US, having studied music production at the prestigious Berkley College of Music.
Check out her MySpace page by typing ‘djemima’, or simply grab a copy of her album from any good record shop, or by contacting demajors directly.

hen the news that the documentary of one of the greatest rock bands in the world, directed by the critically acclaimed Oscar-winning director Cameron Crowe wasn’t going to be screened in Indonesia, avid fans were understandably disappointed. This particular film screening is very important, especially for Indonesians who grew up during the 1990s when the grunge music scene was prominent. Many fans had hoped that the screening of this much anticipated documentary would be consolation for the lack of any PJ concert thus far in Indonesia. However, Pearl Jam’s Indonesian fans refused to just stand there and do nothing, taking matters into their own hands. Members of Pearl Jam Indonesia community are the ones responsible and to be thanked to for bringing the film here. was finally screened here in Jakarta, at Epicentrum XXI in Kuningan on September 20th. The dedicated fans even delved into their own pockets to help pay for the imported film. Before the screening, a great deal of fans gathered in and outside of the theater’s lobby. With Pearl Jam’s music by local bands heard outside and a merchandise stand selling the band’s T-shirts meant that the atmosphere was something akin to an actual concert. At 10pm, the doors opened, and people lined up eagerly to make their way inside. Fans who watched the screening were lucky enough to get an official PJ20 poster and an exclusive official PJ20 program booklet for just Rp. 150,000. Hopefully the struggle to get this film to Jakarta will be recognized by the powers that be, and just maybe we might be treated to a real live head-banging Pearl Jam concert right here in Indonesia. Urban Farming with Indonesia Berkebun Sick and tired of all the stresses and strains of the big city? tried everything to wind down at home after a long day? It might sound mad, but why not try a bit of farming? Urban farming to be precise, and yes it’s totally possible in the city, thanks to the Indonesia Berkebun project. Its purpose is to create green spaces in the middle of the busy city, a scheme pioneered by Ridwan Kamil, the winner of International Design Competition focusing on Ecology, Education, and Economy. The project takes advantage of empty land by growing vegetables etc. It should be pointed out that people involved in this are not professional growers, but through trial and error, they discover the best way to optimize the growth of the crops. It started as a non-business oriented movement with the crops being shared amongst participants and the surrounding communities.
that other restaurants and businesses will do the same. The Indonesia Berkebun movement has now spread to more than fourteen cities in over Indonesia, with membership reaching around 4000. Anyone of any age is welcome to join in and participate in this beneficial movement. For more information, go to the community’s website www. indonesiaberkebun.org, or you can simply follow them on Twitter: @idberkebun (Dini Siregar)
Another benefit is that it’s good for you too! Sunlight can actually improve your mood, and the fresh air that goes with it is good for your health. Being in touch with nature and the great outdoors can help you feel more removed from the stresses of daily life. ndonesia should be very proud to have plenty of young and very talented pianists. From the very young Randy Ryan and Stephanie Onggowinoto (both 15 years) who started their careers at the tender age of 11, to professional and well accomplished pianists like Ananda Sukarlan, Adelaide Simbolon Simanjuntak, Iswargia Sudarno and Levi Gunardi. Let’s not forget either the accomplished and refined Aryo Wicaksono.
042 | 042 beatmag.com
Classicalmusic He might not be particularly well known on our classical music scene yet, however Indonesia should be proud to have a young pianist like him who represents our country overseas and has gained much success. The 29 year old pianist who is currently based in Manhattan New York, gained his masters degree in music from the University of Arizona in America, and has been performing ever since. From the Arabian states to Russia and all over America, Aryo Wicaksono has excelled at giving simply brilliant piano performances. The last time he performed in Jakarta was in 2009 with the Nusantara Symphony Orchestra, and enthralled the whole audience with his grace and technical prowess playing Prokoviev’s 3rd Piano Concerto. Fortunately, this year Aryo Wicaksono is back in Indonesia for a concert tour that will take him from Surabaya to Jogjakarta before finishing in Jakarta. For his upcoming recital in Jakarta on October 9th, Aryo Wicaksono has prepared an interesting program ranging from baroque and romantic to even modern compositions like Bach’s ‘Tocatta in F-sharp Minor’, Rachmaninoff’s ‘Etude Tableaux in D-major’, Liszt’s ‘Mephisto Waltz no. 1’, Wagner’s ‘Isolde’s Liebestod’ (from Tristan und Isolde), some Chopin etudes, nocturnes and waltzes, and even Jaya Suprana’s ‘Tembang Alit’. The Beat Magazine had the opportunity to have a quick chat with this charming pianist/composer about his concert tour this year in Indonesia, and this is what he shared with us: “I am very excited
to come back to Indonesia and especially to present a new piece by Joshua Saulle. This special work was composed in 2010 and had its premiere in Vancouver in August this year. It received a very warm welcome there, and I hope Indonesia will like it too. This will be the first premiere in Jakarta.” Joshua Saulle is an American classical music composer who has written many famous contemporary classical music compositions such as ‘Angel’s Touch’ (intermezzo for piano), ‘Air for Unaccompanied Viola’ and ‘Ubi Caritas’ - a choral motet. He studied composition with Gerald Shapiro at Brown University, and with Dan Becker and David Conte at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. ‘Portrait of a Lady’ is his newest composition, and the one we are looking forward to hearing here in Jakarta. For this concert, Wicaksono plans to have a more intimate and user-friendly recital, where each audience member will be given a copy of the music sheet, meaning that they will be able to follow the score during the performance. He will also talk through each piece and do a little bit of discussion. We asked him for his expectations on this year’s concert tour and he answered: “Expectation? I have no expectation. I just want to play, share music, meet new people and new music communities.” So if you are as excited as him, then make sure not to miss this one night only recital.

wo things stand out about Keith Urban. He married Nicole Kidman, and he makes traditional country music. However, write off this pop country troubadour as a two trick pony at your peril. ‘Put You in a Song’ gives off the the sort nostalgic feel you just don’t hear much on radio these days, while Banjo laced ‘Without You’ is glorious Americana. Piano ballad ‘All for You’ shows that Urban is keen to invoke a bit of good old heartache. Not an album to listen to everyday, but a welcome change from the manufactured pop and hip hop stuff that’s currently out there.

Sorry For Party Rocking n case you hadn’t heard, both members of this Hollywood duo have Motown blood running through their veins (they are descendants of the label’s founder), but that’s pretty much where the connection ends. Musically these hard drinkin’, free dancin’ MC/DJs known as Redfoo and Sky Blu mix up hip hop, synth, electronic, pop and some dance routines as their party trick. It’s not exactly rocket science, but if you’re feeling good and ready for a bit of a dance and shuffle, this is the perfect album.

Warrior Drama, Action, Sport. Director: Gavin O’Connor. Writers: Gavin O’Connor, Anthony Tambakis, Cliff Dorfman. Cast: Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte, Jennifer Morrison, Frank Grillo. This film has already been tipped by film critics as one of the most stirring films this year, with a good chance of bagging an Oscar or two. This compelling sports drama pulls no punches, both physically and emotionally, telling the story of Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy), youngest son of an alcoholic former boxer and coach (Nick Nolte). During his training for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament, he faces a collision with his older brother, and a run in with underdog fighter Brendan (Joel Edgerton). If you liked ‘The Fighter’, you’ll love this.
Green Lantern Action, Sci-Fi, Adventure. Director: Martin Campbell. Writers: Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim. Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Saarsgard, Mark Strong. Lately, a smattering of comic book adaptions have given us plenty of grown men in masks and tight suits, but hey, who’s complaining? It’s always fun to watch superheros fighting baddies and saving the day. Based on characters from the DC comics series, superhero Green Lantern is one of its most famous. It’s pitched at a slightly younger audience, but that’s not to say adults won’t enjoy it as well. A fun romp that’s suitable for all the family.
Killer Elite Action, Thriller, Crime. Director: Gary McKendry. Writers: Gary McKendry and Matt Sherring. Cast: Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Robert De Niro, Dominic Purcell. With a line up plucked from tough-guy heaven (Jason Statham, Clive Owen and the legendary Robert De Niro), this action flick follows two of world’s most elite operative agents as they try to outwit the cunning leader of a secret military group. Taking you around the globe from Australia to Paris and London to Middle East, it’s packed with tense cat and mouse chases and adrenaline pumping action sequences. The script isn’t exactly rocket science, but who cares about that when you’ve got these guys tearing it up. Action-tastic!

How to Choose
the Right Brightening Product Most beauty brands release their own skin brightening products, claiming that their products are the best, but how do we know which ones really work?
It’s no wonder that we, as the customers, might get lost and confused about which brightening products are the most suitable for our skin. Fortunately, Dr Windy Keumala Budianti Sp.KK. shared her knowledge about skin brightening products during the launch of Ultima II Clear White Supreme at Javana Spa, Sukabumi. This is what she had to say: Factors of Skin Pigmentation Before deciding to buy any skin brightening product, it’s also important to understand the factors that make our skin become darker. The skin gets darker when melanin levels inside the skin increase. Factors that trigger the increasing level of melanin include internal factors (genetics, hormonal changes and diseases) and external factors (UV rays, cosmetics and drug usage). Dr Windy explained that UV rays are the most prominent factor of all to cause the skin getting darker (about 80-90%). UV radiation also leads to dry skin, dark spots, burning, aging skin and worst of all, skin cancer. Hormonal changes such as increased estrogen and progesterone promote skin pigmentation in the form of melasma or age spots. Aging problems happen because the skin’s metabolism, texture and function is decreasing. That’s why aging and pigmentation problems are closely related, especially with Asian skin. Choosing The Right Brightening Product The information to the right can be used as a reference to choose the most suitable brightening product for your skin. If we’re exposed to sun often, then we need skin brightening products that have high sun protection. If aging problems are the chief factor of negative skin pigmentation, we need brightening products that offer an anti-aging formula. Besides matching the product with our skin condition, there are several tips that Dr Windy shared to choose the right skin brightening product.
Here they are: 1. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen in the daytime. Sunscreen will be truly useful to prevent discolouration when used together with brightening skincare products. 2. Make sure that your skin is clean and moist always, so your skin is not only bright, but also healthy. 3. Before choosing a particular brightening product, consult with a doctor to help you find out the most suitable product for your skin type and condition, and tell you whether you need to get any treatment or therapy. 4. Educate yourself about good or harmful ingredients commonly contained in brightening products. Avoid using brightening products that have mercury, hydroquinone or steroids. 5. To avoid any negative reaction caused by brightening products, choose a product that contains natural ingredients. Brightening products that contain natural ingredients are usually safe and don’t have any side effects when used over a long period.

he Muslim fashion industry is growing more rapidly than ever, with many young designers offering ready to wear Muslim fashion. More Hijabers communities, and the massive spread of Muslim fashion trends to all regions in Indonesia have all been helped by the Internet. This encouraging trend has lead to the high demand for muslim fashion products. In response to this, last August saw the launch of HijUp.com. According to Diajeng Lestari, founder HijUp.com, through this portal designers can showcase their latest collections to a much wider audience. Previously, Hijabers usually shopped through smaller online shops and through social networks like Facebook. HijUp.com is the first Muslim online shop to accommodate multiple labels under one roof. Hijup garments are almost all from emerging brands from young muslim fashion designers. A number of designers who have joined HijUp. com include Shabby Chic, Kami Idea, Casa Elana, MissMarina, Zysku Xena, and many more. HijUp.com is undoubtably a very exciting and convenient solution for customers, especially outside of Jakarta. However, at the moment most items sell out very quickly most of the time. Looking at the comments from Hidjup.com, we checked out a few thoughts from the forums on the pros and cons of this kind of online store.
Pros: • User friendly, we encountered almost no complications while browsing and shopping in this online store. • E-commerce platform allows us to shop with ease. • Instead of using the label published photos, they made their own product photos. • They have an illustrated help menu, guiding the customer on how to shop step by step. • They also have a Hijab style tutorial video, and it’s so easy to follow! Cons: • The collections sell out very quickly. Maybe they have to stock more of each product. • They charge surprisingly high on delivery costs. Although Hijup already explained that they only use overnight shipment, many customers are still complaining about this, and would prefer a standard delivery charge. • With their own product photos, customers find it become less persuasive than ones published by each label/designer. However, after all HijUp is brand new and they offer something you might not want to miss. So, what do you think?

In 2009, Sandra’s encyclopedic documentation of the Batak textile tradition, ‘Legacy in Cloth, Batak Textiles of North Sumatra’ was published. She felt a moral obligation to bring it to the villagers who had assisted her with her research. When she returned to the villages in 2010 with forty copies of the book to give to the weavers who would otherwise never see it or be able to afford it, she found the textile tradition in crisis.

itting like some kind of pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, Klapa is reached by winding your way down the scenic route through the picturesque Bukit countryside toward the famous Dreamland, now known as New Kuta beach. This area is really starting to take off, with a stunning golf course, trendy hotels and a stack of luxury villas and resorts popping up all over the place. What better place then for these high-flyers to convene over a top end menu and wicked drinks list.
venue, right on the sand at the bottom of the steps to Dreamland beach. The steak is equally divine, with a fantastic tender texture that is complimented perfectly by the mashed potato and foie gras sauce. Suitably stuffed, we finish with a chocolate fondant to share for dessert (55k++), which hits all the right spots with its gooey warm chocolate filling and champagne strawberry sauce. Perfect timing too, as the sky is just starting to light up, and there’s nothing for it but to order a couple of cold beers and watch the sunset show.
With it’s prime location overlooking the famous surfing waves of Impossibles and Bingin, Klapa feels a million miles away from the old Kuta beach, and a trip up here is highly recommended if you Dan Ashcroft feel like getting out of town for a bit. With this in mind, I arrive at the cavernous venue sometime around the mid afternoon mark, giving myself plenty of time for a bit of noshing before the sun goes down. Making our way down the huge central spiral staircase, the missus and I pull up a pew on the large concrete decking area in front of the airy restaurant. There’s no fiddling around with different menus for certain times of the day here, everything you need can be found within the pages of the hefty main menu. From daytime grazing and light lunches to evening meals and decadent desserts - it’s all in there, and we set to work making our choices over a couple of apple mint coolers (35k++) whilst lapping up the warm afternoon sun. To kick things off, we opt for the chicken salad (45k++) and the smoked salmon tower (65k++) - to share of course. As much as I’m a fan of smoked salmon, I’m drawn to the fantastic flavour combination of the shredded chicken, pink grapefruit and crunchy beansprouts of the salad, given a cheeky Balinese twist with a dash of chili sambal. Next up we go for a bit of surf’n’turf, with a plate of ikan kakap panggang (100k++) and a succulent cut of chargrilled Black Angus beef tenderloin (325k++). New on the menu, the fish is done ‘Jimbaran style’, with that fantastic barbeque flavour that goes so well with a dollop of fresh sambal matah. I’m told that similar local style fish dishes can be found at Klapa’s beach restaurant

Therethen Double Six Saturday 24 Sept
Closing party
D
ouble Six Club on Seminyak beach closed its doors last week after 24 years of being the biggest club on the island. Many of the faithful from over the years were there to see the place off in grand style, and credit to the organisers that they did just that... the club was looking great dressed to the nines for her last night on the town. DJs came from all over the country to offer their services for the closing party and the music appropriately started right from the beginning with some real old stuff and continued to the latest sounds. With many an old track heard and an old face seen, nostalgia was on the agenda. Most would have left at the end of the night with mixed feelings. All those good and sometimes bad memories being locked away forever, ground into the dirt, turned into more condos and villas – isn’t that just what we need! As someone said during the night – “at least we saw it through to the end and we made it through to the other side”. I guess we have all gotta be thankful for that. More photos on beatmag.com.
