The peak of events in December this year isn’t on New Year Eve as you may think, but in the early and middle part of the month. You can see it from the large number of international artists who will be performing at various events from blues, pop and all the way to dance music at varying stages around town. Indoor and outdoor rave parties will also be held until the end of the year. The year is still not over yet, but so many international artists have put their names down to perform in Jakarta next year already. But don’t forget that there is one more important thing left this year and that’s Christmas, which means like always, parties are ready to be celebrated all over the place. We’d like to wish all our readers, advertisers, family and friends a Peaceful and Merry Christmas. We’ll be back shortly for the New Year’s Eve edition.

SPOILT FOR CHOICE? www.beatmag.com
T
here seems to be a surfeit of drinking venues in the Epicentrum area. Is that healthy? Taman Rasuna, the apartment complex in Kuningan, South Jakarta, has long been an area where many of the capital’s expatriates have chosen to live. Strategically located at the eastern edge of the city’s central business district (the “golden triangle”), the complex now boasts 19 tower blocks, each with just over 30 floors. That’s a huge potential market right on the doorstep of anyone who chooses to set up in business in the locality. Until a few years ago, the main (the only?) venue where local expats could go to relax over a beer with friends was Aphrodite, which is still going strong. It’s essentially a sports bar behind Pasar Festival shopping mall, with a laid-back ambience that caters for a slightly
older, predominantly male clientele. That’s the main attraction for its regulars: People feel safe there. I’ve seen guests leave their laptop on the bar unattended while they play on one of the two always-popular pool tables. With a menu that offers a choice of Asian and Western dishes, many choose to dine there regularly, too. Then along came Epicentrum Walk, the futuristic shopping mall that has sprung up over the last couple of years. Its design is certainly eyecatching, for the venue is regularly used by TV One as a set for its shows and has featured prominently in numerous locally made TV ads. Although it has a supermarket and a Cinema XX1 as anchor tenants, the mall has simply not yet taken off commercially, leaving just banks, hair salons and f&b venues looking rather forlorn in
what should really be a thriving shopping centre. The absence of customer “buzz”, however, has not deterred bar/resto owners from setting up shop here, for the vicinity now boasts at least six more drinking venues that should in theory appeal to the expat market. Liquid Exchange, with its “stock market in reverse” theme, is managed by the same people who run Aphrodite, and caters for a slightly more upmarket crowd. It’s also where The Beat holds its occasional Sunday afternoon barbecues. E-corner, prominently located on the main approach to Epicentrum Walk, features some interesting menu items and is popular at weekends. BlueGrass and Otel Lobby are the newest kids on the block, aiming to pull in punters looking for the trendiest f&b experience within a stylish setting.
Moodz, all glass and metal, prominently displays its wine cellar inside the shopping mall, while Allegra bistro and bar is trying to stand out by promoting Stark bottled beer. Having gone from just one to at least seven drinking venues seemingly overnight, one wonders if there are enough potential customers to sustain them, despite the large pool of expats in the neighbourhood. Visitors come from beyond, of course, but Epicentrum Walk has still to become the major attraction it was clearly designed to be. Inevitably, time will tell. For the moment, at least, people are spoilt for choice but I suspect that Aphrodite, named after the goddess of love and pleasure, will continue to exert her siren charms on a sizeable proportion of local drinkers ... You’d probably know the reason why...

It’s Christmas Time

Aside from this grand Christmas concert, we also have an interesting opera performance to offer you. Christmas time comes with many traditions and one to be performed this year is Engelbert Humperdinck’s famous opera adaptation of “Hansel and Gretel” which is originally based on the world renowned Grimm Brothers’ fairytale. Admired for its folk-music-inspired theme, this opera, which is also often called a marchenoper or fairy tale opera. The opera first premiered on December 23, 1893 and since then it has been associated with Christmas. Today, it is still one of the most performed operas at Christmas time.
Starting this month, you can also find plenty Christmas concerts from most of local churches. From choirs to church orchestras, they will present performances either after mass or standing alone as special events. However, from all these Christmas concerts, there are a couple that have caught our attention.
Jakarta Opera together with Musicasa will continue this tradition and present this performance on December 21. Respected Indonesian soprano Binu Sukaman will play the important role of the infamous Gingerbread Witch, while mezzo-soprano Regina Handoko and soprano Devi Fransiska will be the leading characters of Hansel and Gretel. Find out how this fairy tale opera ends...
The Jakarta Oratorio Society and Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra with conductor Dr. Jahja Ling will complete their performance series for this year by presenting a grand “Christmas Concert 2011” at Aula Simfonia. Until now, they still haven’t shared with us their program and would like to keep it as a surprise. However, understanding their musicality, expect to hear classical pieces from Mozart or Handel with some Christmas songs from around the world. “Christmas Concert 2011” will also present soprano Janice Chandler Eteme as the guest star. Originally from USA, Ms. Chandler Eteme is a renowned lyric soprano that can sing an incredible range of music and has performed with the world’s top orchestras and conductors. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in vocal performance from Oakwood College, a Master of Music in vocal performance from Indiana University, and has studied with Virginia Zeani, Margaret Harshaw and Todd Duncan. NEGEV
Artsy but cozy, sophisticated yet relaxed. Welcome to Negev!
O
pened on September 30, 2011, Negev is a casual dining restaurant and a gallery bar, offering warmth and hospitality surrounded by an imaginative yet remarkable collection of arts. You’ll be in awe of the wonderful artwork on display; from sculptures to wood carvings, to a giant 100-year old tree stump which stands proudly as a centerpiece. You can also find creations of the great Indonesian sculpture artist Nyoman Nuarta. The artworks stylishly enhance the brilliant ambiance here at Negev and the modern classic interior and subtle lighting add a certain inspiring flair. But don’t let all these objects distract you from the main focus. The food at Negev is every bit as impressive as the arts on display. The menu reflects modern European, Mediterranean and Asian cuisine with a unique creative vision, courtesy of Executive Chef Chandra Yudasswara and his team.

We started with the immaculately created Classic Nicoise Salad (85k) and Broccoli and Blue Cheese Soup (50k). Both these dishes look like works of art themselves, so much so that we felt bad ruining them. Make no mistake, though, we savored every bite and sip with gusto. The Sea Bass and Orange Clam Bisque (185k) was up next, admirably created by Negev’s Chef Tournant, actress Tamara Bleszynski. A succulent piece of sea bass was laid on top of a bed of clams over a tasty, creamy orange colored broth, and nicely accented with aromatic herbs plus slices of lemon and bell peppers. This is one dramatic dish you should not miss!

If you opted for spicy, but not hot, go for the Maboh Men, Ramen topped with spicy tofu and minced beef, or the Japanese Curry Ramen. Both are very tasty and priced at 36k for a small bowl, 50k for regular. If you want to go even milder, the Oxtail Stamina Ramen (44k small, 59 regular) will surely satisfy: Ramen with Australian oxtail, served with shio (clear, salty) or shoyu (Japanese soy sauce) soup. Other noteworthy dishes are the Tori Kara Age (32k); deep fried boneless chicken and the Yo Ling Ji (34k); crispy chicken with sweet and sour sauce. Both are great as appetizers or simply to accompany your meal. Want rice? Ask for the Chahan (26k); Japanese fried rice, served with a bowl of hearty miso soup. Ramen 38 Sanpachi also has good Sushi, like the Sushi Roll 38 or California Roll (15k each) and grilled goodies or Kushiyaki, such as Gindara (25k), Gyu/beef Yakiniku (35k), Yakitori (20k), and Gyu Enoki (25k). We refreshed ourselves with some Japanese Soda (18k) - choose among green tea, apple, lychee, or kinkan orange flavor. The ice blended green tea drink Matcha Ole (20k) is also excellent. But the Kaki Gouri (25k) or shaved ice really ended our little reunion on a high note. The Azuki or red bean is best. (Budi Iskandar)

pened about a year ago, this smallish Japanese eatery in the popular suburb of Bintaro is already getting a lot of repeat customers along with winning the hearts of new ones. Ramen 38 Sanpachi is a chain of Japanesestyle noodle restaurants, but this is the only outlet serving 100% halal dishes. The place kind of reminds me of those casual Japanese restaurants on Sawtelle Avenue in Los Angeles. The room is smallish, the décor is basic (but still typically Japanese), but it’s pretty cozy and usually packed with patrons during dining hours. The specialty here is of course Ramen. And the signature dish is the so-called Ramen from Hell! More on that later. I went there with a group of friends, some wanting to see what hell has to offer. We started with some Gyoza (25k) or Japanese dumplings, filled with chicken, garlic, leek, and herbs, and the Horenzo Butter (27k) or buttered stir pan spinach. But the best one is the Chasu Tsumami (32k): Japanese style cold cuts made of aromatic smoked chicken slices. This is a firm favourite among the Japanese regulars, and it’s easy to see why. Our conversation was flowing freely, but now it was time for the main event. The side walls of this restaurant are full of pictures of brave souls who have tried many levels of the noodles from hell at Ramen 38 Sanpachi. Also known as Jigoku Ramen (36k small bowl, 50k regular), this is one super hot dish, with meat, spinach, mushroom, herbs and spices. The heat comes from a combo of chili, chili oil, chili powder, and special Jigoku sauce. Some of my friends tried it but didn’t want to go pass level three and they were sweating profusely already. We tipped our hat to one guy whose photo is on the wall. He went all the way to level 70! We hope you have a good medical insurance, Sir!

Signora Pasta

Before Signora Pasta, Pino was involved in the shoe business in Jakarta, and Maria was a caterer who specialized in Italian dishes, having to learn her skills in cooking Italian cuisine from the mother-in-law, back when she was living in Italy for 10 years. In early 2011, they thought that it would be nice to have a business they can enjoy, and finally decided to open Signora Pasta in Cirendeu. The menu included pasta dishes made with spaghetti, fettuccine, rigatoni, penne,
gnocchi, fusilli, lasagna, and a variety of pizzas, not to mention the gelatos for dessert. The recipes are from Pino’s ancestors, Italian original recipes, so none of the dishes are adjusted to the local Indonesian sense of taste. All of the pastas are homemade and most of all, the ingredients are imported straight from Italy to maintain their authenticity. Thanks to the location of Signora Pasta that is in the outskirts of Jakarta, the lease for the place is not astronomical. Hence, the price range that Pino charges for food and beverages are not as high as other restaurants with imported products for their ingredients. The prices ranged between IDR 20.000 – 60.000. aybe the place is a little outside of the city, but this small pasta and pizza joint with a delicate eye for authenticity is well worth the visit. Signora Pasta is located at Cirendeu, South Tangerang, just a little further south of Lebak Bulus. Pino, Giuseppe’s nickname, and his wife are always seen greeting arriving guests into their small restaurant whenever possible.

Mexican Culture and Nature Brought by Pineda Covalin
B
erlin Fashion Week designers and British milliners were not the only international talents in Jakarta Fashion Week 2012. We also had the chance to view a Mexican fashion designers, Cristina Pineda and Ricardo Covalin with their label Pineda Covalin. As JFW 2012 reached its sixth day, I was introduced to the label that was founded in 1996. The brand has already opened stores in Chile, Brazil, United States, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Russia and Australia. Pineda Covalin aims to spread the richness of Mexican and Latin American culture and tradition through its bright and colorful motifs on product such as ties, purses, scarves and even shoes.
www.beatmag.com
At JFW, the purpose was expressed by parading various motifs that represent pre-Hispanic iconography, folklore, flora and fauna and contemporary arts. Just like batik that depicts Indonesian cultural richness, Mexico had Pineda Covalin to show it off at JFW 2012. Being showcased on the promenade area of Pacific Place Mall, Pineda Covalin presented many dresses, ranging from mini to maxi. Most of them were made of light and flowing silk so they seemed to fit the tropical climate in both Mexico and Indonesia rather well. The designs were simple, wearable and they looked perfect for casual to semi-formal events, especially in outdoor areas such as gardens or beaches. The designers explained that in this collection they featured embroidery of Hidalgo, the colorful plumage of quetzal feathers, monarch butterflies, Tehuana and Cihuahua ceramics, the tradition of Otomi and Ttztozil embroidery, also Alebrijes and Otomi dolls. It’s The Deutschland Invasion in
Jakarta Fashion Week 2012
Laila - editor of www.fashionesedaily.com Style & Beauty with Attitude

Haute couture is amazing, but there were days when my JakartaFashion-Week-tired eyes needed to take a break from highly structured, detailed, or complicated pieces, and just settle on simpler, ready-to-wear collections. And so I was happy to see the closing show on the fourth day, which featured three understated yet innovative Berlin labels, all of which were present and impressed the industry in this year’s Berlin Fashion Week.
Boessert Schorn (www.boessert-schorn.de) Boessert Schorn was originally a collaboration brand by two designers, Sonia Boessert and Bridgitte Schorn. But the duo decided to split, leaving Sonia Boessert as the sole designer. The label was known for their variations of knitwear, but for the Spring-Summer 2012 collection that they brought to Indonesia, the knitwear wasn’t dominant. Instead, Boessert Schorn sent down model after model down the runway in consistently loose and flowing pieces. They might look simple, but indeed the silhouettes were strong and wearable for Indonesia’s environment. The knitwear did appear, eventually, and it was nice to find that they were looking very wearable. There were no bulky sweaters, only slouchy, casual ones in blocks of colors. Generally, the colors seemed to be very earthy, with tones of sand, clay, precious stones, and coals, which are not usually the most exciting colors, but looked attractive in this collection. To add, the graphic prints, which also seemed were derived from natural elements, presented youthful and modern appearances, totally saving the simple silhouettes from being lifeless.
www.beatmag.com
Starstyling (www.startyling.net) Qualities of a great Ready to Wear (RTW) collection are unique, fun, and catering for real people instead of only catwalk runway models. If you agree, meet Starstyling. Founded in 2000 by husband and wife duo, Katja Schelegel and Kai Seifried, Starstyling’s aim wasn’t being high fashion, but rather to have fun with it, mock trends, and break rules. Life is short, why take it so serious? As a result, Starstyling has become similar to street wear, with avant-garde touches. For this year’s Jakarta Fashion Week, the label
brought their Spring/Summer 2012 collection, Stripes Your Right to Party. Though the presentation was only modeled by girls, the collection actually consisted of unisex pieces for both fun-lovin’ boys and girls. The unisex-ism of the collection was shown through sporty tunics, shirts, sweaters and trousers that work on both genders. As the name suggested, this collection was all about stripes. But Katja and Kei did not just slap on regular stripes, the main goal was to break the normally strict lines. Katja painted the stripes herself by hand, which made them more
067
s t y l e
organic, loopy, and far from perfectly straight. The collection also combined stripes with other shapes of lines, for example, circular lines and other stripes. There were pieces with striped fabric, yet topped with other hand painted lines, so sometimes there were three layers of different kinds of stripes. Although line prints are often thought as masculine and strict, Stripes Your Right to Party twisted that impression with lots of cheery, pastel colors and even glow in the darks. And as the cherry on top: neon colored lips and no shoes! The models were either barefooted or wearing hand painted socks—with striped motifs of course. If only the lips got the same stripes treatment.
Remember when Katy Perry made a bold entrance to the Costume Institute Gala with a light-up outfit? Or when Rihanna performed in a flashing LED light dress during her 2010 European tour? Those are examples that such clothing isn’t something you could only find in the Back to the Future films anymore. And with Moon Berlin, light technology in apparel has become even simpler, wearable, and closer to us. Moon Berlin is a new label founded by German fashion designers Brigitte Franken and Christian Bruns. They integrate light-emitting components into fabrics to create beautiful and dynamic light/shadow effects on their dresses. The micro technology is laminated onto the fabric, so you can’t remove it from the clothing, but you can conveniently wash it. What’s more, the clothes also have sensors that react with the movement of the body, so if you are moving, the lights begin to shimmer faster and brighter. Welcome to the real 21st century! Their first collection, “I’m Not A Robot”, was debuted in January 2011 Berlin Fashion Week and it shows how illumination can be implemented into ready-to-wear clothing without being gimmicky. And we were lucky enough to preview the collection right here at Jakarta Fashion Week. Light in fashion has always been associated with science fiction themes, however, even at first glance, you’d see that the collection is not like that at all—hence, the name “I’m Not a Robot”. In fact, Moon Berlin did a great job of creating
sophisticated and simple styles and inserting lights just as accents. There were white blouses with black pants, inspired by the style of Marlene Dietrich, and also dresses inspired by the fashion of ancient Greece. Never have I seen such high tech clothing that doesn’t look cliché and Robocopish, but very wearable and appealing.

Example Playing In the Shadow
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
M
inistry of Sound didn’t have any doubt when releasing this album. Producers like Funkagenda, Nero, Michael Woods, Faithless, Laidback Luke, Sheldrake, etc crafted Example’s beats and whole tracks with care and craze at just the right level to hit both dance floor and the independent community. More doses of current electronic revolutions like dub step and drum n bass, and electro house can be found. You might have heard ‘Changed the Way you Kiss Me’, ‘Stay Awake’ but the surprising part is the quiet acoustic piano magic in ‘Anything’ and ‘Lying to yourself’. My verdict is that it’s a fantastic journey through all dance music landscapes all wrapped up in one very accessible album.

Just imagine AC/DC’s groove with a twist of Van Halen, and face melting guitar riffs from Satriani, and you will get how this album really sounds. One exception is a track called ‘Something Going Wrong’ with a dose of unanticipated banjo and folk infused acoustic guitar.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol Action, Adventure, Thriller. Director: Brad Bird. Writers: Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec. Cast: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Anil Kapoor. How inseparable is Tom Cruise and his almost-impossible character secret agent Ethan Hunt in the “Mission: Impossible” films? Yeah, it’s pretty hard to separate the two. Five years since the third edition, here comes a mission more intense and grittier than ever with a new team played by an excellent cast including Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, and Simon Pegg. Ghost Protocol is another impossible mission for Ethan and his team, from Czech, India to the Arab Emirates they will take you to witness the impossible being possible. Climbing backwards up the world’s tallest skyscraper, impossible? Ethan Hunt will show you!

Point Blank Action, Crime, Thriller. Director: Fred Cavayé. Writer: Guillaume Lemans. Cast: Gilles Lellouche, Roschdy Zem, Gérard Lanvin, Elena Anaya, Mireille Perrier.
The Next Three Days” memang terbilang baru.

Samuel, a nurse, has to watch his pregnant wife get kidnapped right before his eyes and discovers that he must do the culprit’s bidding against rival gangsters and cops in a deadly race. From the rookie French director and writer who amazed audiences with their debut of “Pour Elle” and was offered a Hollywood remake of “The Next Three Days”, “Point Blank” will bring the same thrilling feel and race-with-time action. With well timed plot twists, “Point Blank” is said to be a finely calibrated French neo-noir. Be careful that your adrenaline rush doesn’t overload with this one!
Drive Drama, Thriller, Crime. Director: Nicolas Winding Refn. Writer: Hossein Amini. Cast: Ryan Gosling, Carrey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Albert Brooks.
Driver (Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine) is a Hollywood stunt performer by day and a wheelman for armed heists by night. Discovering that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong, the Driver must also save a young mom, Irene (Carrey Mulligan) he’s in love with and her son from being tailgated by a syndicate of deadly criminals. With escalating violent scenes along the way, a steady fast pace and love entanglements, Drive is the needle-punch of adrenaline you could be looking for. Shift gears and action!
www.beatmag.com

ue to the close proximity between Jakarta and Bandung, many people commute between the two. Among those people are Ary Buy Shandra, Aditya Rahadi Pratama, Andi Rharharha, Rege Indrastudianto, and Ritchie Ned Hansel from Jakarta, together with Ageng Purna Galih, Dave Syauta, Billi Anjing, Diandra Galih R., and William Wahyu Waluyo from Bandung. Together, they initiated a group exhibition called “JakartaBandung Pulang Pergi” (JKTBDGPP) in mid-July, 2011.
Some of the exhibited artworks’ themes revolve around this topic. The moments of loneliness while travelling, the differences before and after Cipularang, cultural differences, and many more. The artists interpret the motives of each of the city’s residents for travelling; the Bandungians go to Jakarta to chase their dreams, while the Jakartans go to Bandung to rest and dream. They realize that the migration and movement between the capital city and flower city is a love/hate relationship that will continue.
For their second installment, JKTBDGPP is showcasing paintings, collages, illustrations, installations and videos from Ykha Amelz, Ricky “Babay” Janitra, Ario Kiswinar Teguh, Lutfi Anwar Noor, Sir Dandy Harrington, Adityo Cahyo Saputro and Saleh Husein in Dia.Lo.Gue. Artspace, Kemang, Jakarta, until December 31, 2011. The method of travel between Jakarta and Bandung from 2007 was revolutionized with the Cipularang Toll Road. Thanks to this shortcut, it now only takes about two hours to get to Jakarta or Bandung.

haven’t killed the sketch book, (maybe) yet
the past, before the invention of the smart phone, people used to bring their own note book; for artists, they draw their ideas, for writers, they wrote their ideas. Whoever they are, they catch their epiphany moments on paper before short term memory cleans out their ideas. In Sketch Book Project, ruangrupa invited 29 artists from a variety of multi-disciplinary fields from various places such as Jakarta, Bandung,
Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and even Amsterdam. Artists who were invited to join the exhibition sent a note book containing a hundred pages and asked to fill out the picture book with his work. Each artist was asked to “fill in” the sketchbook which was sent in after three months. After a period was completed, each artist was asked to send back the sketch book so that it could be presented at Ruru Gallery in the form of an exhibition. This project is supported by tuatuasekolah, (www.
www.beatmag.com
In
tuatuasekolah.com), which was established to raise funds through selling sketchbooks. A wise man once said in addition to learning, drawing can be done anywhere. In short, sketchbooks are a form of visual diary. A container to summarize the ideas and creativity that comes. Even really absurd sketches provide a window into someone else’s psyche.

The Facial Muscle Toner This device emits harmless, mild electrical stimulation to tone facial muscles and help reduce age lines. Dual electrodes produce micro currents that stimulate muscle contractions, strengthening and tightening muscle fibers to help reduce bags under the eyes, lift cheeks, and diminish wrinkles without requiring surgical procedures. Unlike expensive creams that provide superficial benefits, the electrical stimulation penetrates deep into muscles to increase subcutaneous blood circulation and oxygenation, mitigating the muscular elasticity that causes skin to sag around the brow, mouth, and jawbone. http://www.hammacher.com $219.95
The Professional’s Image Restoring Digital Slide Converter This is the scanner that converts and restores 35mm slide images to their original quality. A full 5,000 x 5,000 dpi resolution scan-its highest setting-of a single slide takes just over three minutes, capturing all the details of the original image at 34 megapixels. Once converted, the software removes surface defects such as dust and scratches from an image (after the scanner’s infrared sensor detects dust), restores original colors from faded film images, and removes film grain from converted images. http://www.hammacher.com $1,200

This is the only electric knife sharpener that can prolong the life of blades by removing the barest minimum of metal to achieve a fine edge. While other sharpeners erode knives with aggressive grinding, the interlocking ceramic wheels of this model gently file a blade's edge, preserving it for more years of use. While other sharpeners employ multiple steps and an array of slots, this model saves time with a single slot to sharpen both sides at once. http://www.hammacher.com $149.95

igi’s concert in Akasaka started at the stroke of midnight. They opened the show with their hit ‘Panas’, which really turned up the heat and made the crowd erupt into a wild frenzy. Frontman Armand Maulana, was singing at the top of his lungs along with the whole band playing as tight as ever. The full house lapped it up and were in awe for most of the set. This concert was like a gathering of their fans coming from various eras, from teenagers to adults, they were all there. It wasn’t only Kahitna performeing at the event but Yovie and Nuno also played a support set. Both of the bands closed the night with great performances and many of their fans hoped that they would come again soon.

Golddigger u’u Bar was filled with gooooooold! Not any gold, 24k Solid Gold. It looked like King Midas had just had exploded all over Hu’u bar that night and DJ Golddigger was not exempt from the magic touch. His audio video setup kept the crowd on their toes and pumped up, and although some songs seemed a little slow for the fast paced crowd, things were very nostalgic and it was once again a fun night with the English master spinner. If you decided to sample the crowd, you would have tasted a lot of gold and the distinct flavor of expatriate.
