Bob Marley once said ‘to know where we are going, we must know where we came from’. And what fitting words for us here at the Capital, Jakarta the big durian. These are exciting times in a city that’s fast becoming the business and pleasure hub of South East Asia. We are expecting a generous spike in the number of foreign working professionals to make Jakarta their base and although the city’s traffic jams will greatly test their patience, we believe the improvements, charm and Indonesian hospitality will keep them here for a while. The Beat celebrates the nations triumph at the SEA Games. We take our hats off and are in awe of the unselfish and award winning work of Ibu Robin Lim for her efforts and service to humankind and we’re dancing the ‘two step’ with you, you and you, who keep the city movin’ and grooving to the hustle, bustle & beat of the city. We know where we’ve come from and we sure know where we are going. Predictions aside, Jakarta, Indonesia will still be swinging long after the Mayan calendars are up, so, as the old saying goes ‘out with the old and in with the new’ We wish all our readers, clients family and friends a prosperous and wonderful New Year. Bring on 2012. Cheers! The Beat merayakan kemenangan Indonesia di SEA Games. Bring on 2012. Cheers!

Remember the legendary song ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon? Part of the lyrics in that song said “Imagine There’s No Hunger” and those words hasve inspired some people to make a global campaign to raise money and awareness about childhood hunger and poverty around the world. This movement is also supported by Yoko Ono, wife of the late John Lennon. John Lennon Foundation and Whyhunger.org have held campaigns all over the world through pin, necklace, t-shirt and bracelet sales and also direct contributions where the profits are donated. Hard Rock Café is one of the supporters of this campaign, by holding events, donationas and selling merchandise. For those of you that want to get involved, you can join and find the information at Hard Rock Café Jakarta. Join Us in the fight Against Childhood Hunger & Poverty Worldwide!

The Mersey Beatles – Live In Jakarta Since 1999, The Mersey Beatles have been known as one of the best Beatles tribute bands that look and sound so similar with the original outfit. Just like The Fab Four, The Mersey Beatles were born in the same town, Liverpool. Because of their fondness for The Beatles’ songs, Mark Bloor (John Lennon), David Howard (George Harrison), Steven Howard (Paul Mc Cartney) and Brian Ambrose (Ringo Starr) want to preserve those songs through their very similar show. The Mersey Beatles’ performance in Jakarta is promoted by First Edition. The concert will be held at Pullman Ballroom, Central Park Mall on December 31 at 8 pm. For ticket info please check www.rajakarcis.com

House, Progressive

Hails From

Jakarta, Indonesia

Millenium Executive Club | Wednesday 28 December | 11pm Has Been

Lola Alicia started her career as a model and television actress but her huge passion in music convinced her to finally jump into the DJ scene. Inspired by big names like Steve Angello, Robbie Rivera, Alex Morph, Gabriel & Dresden, Mark Knight, Austin Leeds and Matthew Dekay, Lola learnt the techniques and started to mix tunes in many clubs in 2006. She received the third place at Indoclubber Awards as Indonesia’s Favorite DJ 2010 – 2011.

Are Now

It’s big, bold, organised, commercial, and even fun.

Bold: The list of international and local performers was a dream line-up including Roger Sanchez, Bob Sinclair, Chuckie, Jazzy Jeff, Emma Hewitt, Ladytron, Cyberjapan, Moonlight Matters, Cosmic Gate, Fred Falke, Agnes Monika, David Naif, and a truck load more. A list unimaginable a few years ago. Organised: A great set up, tightly knitted together, where you didn’t have to walk far between stages

and plenty of space to move. lighting was pumping.

The sound and

Commercial: Sponsors giving away beers to get a vote online was interesting. There were moments it felt more like a trade show than a rockin’ rave party. Fun: Well, that’s what it’s all about. Cutting loose, getting free and losing yourself in the music and visuals. There was plenty of that and plenty of people. The right recipe for a big night out with an elite group of dance music performers.

Big: Two big undercover areas of Senayan Tennis Stadium and one smaller to the side. The Red and White areas were the main focus of the international acts and were both ram jamming full all night long. The smaller Black area was a more chilled out venue but had a bit of class.

Will our BB

love affair ever end?

The government’s recent threat to turn off the BlackBerry (BB) internet service must have made many people’s hearts miss a beat.

www.beatmag.com

Of

all the nations in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is the one that has fallen in love with the BB smartphone most of all. Visit our nearest neighbours, Singapore or Malaysia, and you’ll find most smartphone users are firmly wedded to Apple iPhones. What’s more, Indonesia hosts one of the few expanding markets for BB products anywhere in the world. Objectively speaking, the BB should be more suited to business users, given the functions it has plus the encryption (via servers in Canada) that ensures a high degree of privacy is maintained. The iPhone, on the other hand, is much better suited to leisure users, who form the vast majority of smartphone users in Indonesia. However, BB’s success over here is a classic example of how crucially important it is for a consumer gadget to be available at the right time, price and place. When people in Indonesia

started upgrading from 2G (“unsmart”) to 3G (smart) phones en masse about four to five years ago, the BB filled the gap perfectly, especially for people in the larger cities. Available in a range of models that suit every budget (currently about Rp 1.5 to 6 million), the number of users reached a critical mass that ensured BBM, the “free” messaging service, would become the preferred method for people to send each other text messages. Who hasn’t observed the somewhat bizarre sight of a group of friends out together but sitting in silence in a cafe, both thumbs furiously working the qwerty keyboards of their BBs as they text other friends via BBM or check out their facebook status? Two recent events in Jakarta illustrate the depth of our BB obsession by rich and poor alike. BB maker RIM planned to sell its latest Bellagio model (making its world debut in Indonesia) at half-price at Pacific Place shopping mall. People started waiting in line a day before the event was due to start but it eventually had to be abandoned as the crowd started to become too unmanageable and some were injured in a stampede.

A high-flying Indonesian student on holiday here from Singapore where he was studying was fatally stabbed by an unemployed man in a North Jakarta mugging – not for his wallet but his BB. Meanwhile, the government has been showing its impatience with RIM as the company has not yet established a data (server) centre within the country. Both parties have become engaged in a high-stakes game of chicken whose outcome will inevitably affect the four million BB users in Indonesia. Some have even said the government should stop bullying RIM as that will be counterproductive ultimately. The immediate threat to shut down BB’s internet service has now been replaced by an announcement that regulations will be put in place early in 2012 requiring all international tecomms operators to set up a service centre within the country. Whichever way the impasse is resolved, one cannot avoid concluding that four million of us will not give up our BBs easily: This is one love affair not due to end anytime soon. [Jim Read]

man of may talents, Leo is currently preparing his Singapore gig sometime in the near future. Other than gigs and prep for his second album, he’s also doing some minor directing. He’s made one video for himself “Blatant” and he did Sore’s “Silly Little Thing”. Next one is L’alphalpha’s video.

He’s also producing two artists. The first one is Popzzle, a vocal group singing children songs wrapped in swing jazz music. The other is Roofers, a new breed, Jakarta’s upcoming band, a mixture between The Strokes and Waljinah. Both are still in the production room.

What music are you into at the moment? Well, up to now, releases from Stax and Motown Records have always been my personal favorites. I’m still hooked on to the 70s, my mind is amused by Pink Floyd and David Bowie. There’s also stuff from Tom Waits, Buzzcocks, Nick Cave, Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell that I put in my iPod, next to my revived swing jazz collection, and lots of originals. Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Louis Prima and lots more… I just press “shuffle” and there you go… What was the first record you bought, any interesting stories behind it? The first record I bought was Aerosmith’s Pump. For a kid like me, the album cover was amazing. I didn’t think twice and bought it instantly, and also I didn’t even care what the hell Aerosmith was. Haha… Thank goodness that album is great! What are your all time favorite albums? Why? I can’t name them all. There are too many. I guess they’re Tom Waits’ Closing Time, The Brian Setzer Orchestra’s The Dirty Boogie, Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Stone Flower to Napalm Death’s Scum haha... Too many... My personal wish after buying a record is that the album will actually speak to me, with our own secret lingo, if it’s a good one. If it doesn’t say a thing, then, to the toilet it must go.

www.beatmag.com

What was the worst record you ever purchased? The worst record I ever bought was Nuno Bettencourt’s solo album. I forget what the title was. I cant even remember why I hated it. Too ugly to remember. But the worst album somebody ever gave me was a Tiesto album. Haha, come on, Tiesto?

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? I guess I wanna reincarnate as my dad. I wanna buy little Leo a guitar and a drum kit and let him be what he wants to be when he grows up. What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrowed or bought? There’s this book titled “Friendly Fire” written by Julia Sweig. It’s a political book about the anti-America movement. I got this thing towards politics. The other is “Love is a Dog From Hell” by Charles Bukowski, one of the beat generation’s grand masters. Poems in it are mostly satirical compositions. Love it. It’s a 10 for sure. What new movie should people see? Why? I dunno about new movies, but I never get tired watching “The Usual Suspects” over and over again. Bryan Singer is a genius! There’s another, dunno whether this is a new one or not. It’s Ricky Gervais’ “Cemetery Junction”. A typical Brit-movie, you’ll laugh your ass off, but you could go either way, you could drown in tears. What album do you choose to start your weekend? These days, I usually play Chuck Berry’s St. Louis to Liverpool out loud while doing my air-guitar around my house, and sometimes while washing my car. Well, it’s the weekend... Haha. And album you choose to end your weekend? To end it, it’s time for Tom Waits’ Closing Time or Terry Callier’s What Color is Love. A perfect getaway car!

Interview with a Grapholigist

f e a t u r e

About Graphology: First, let me explain a bit about handwriting.

www.beatmag.com

Handwriting is really “brain writing”. The brain transmits its instructions to the hand, and the hand acts as the medium to transfer all those signals into written words. For example: Try to write your name in the air using your nose. You will naturally move your head – as your nose is the tip of pen - and form those invisible letters. And I bet you will try to write it the same way you always write. You will form those specific

shapes of words that you always make, in the air. It proves that it is neither the hand nor the nose that does the writing. It’s the brain. If you actually train your nose or even your foot to write, what in the beginning might look like an indecipherable scribble would eventually look exactly like the writing made by your hand. The way we write, then, is a reflection of what is happening in our brain. In our psyche. And Graphology is a science to determine someone’s true character and tendencies by analyzing the shapes and form in his or her handwriting.

About Deborah Dewi:

049

D

I understand that the art of graphology was practiced a long time back. How has it changed and what is this ‘handwriting analysis’ applicable to? Yes, graphology is an ancient art and yet it’s methods haven’t changed since it was discovered more than a hundred years ago. It doesn’t get updated or revised. It is a powerful tool to study human behavior and all you need is your eyes. In terms of its applicability, graphology is today used in conducting business deals, it is a tool used to develop companies human resource efficiency and even banks have started to use our services. For example, if you are able to analyze handwriting and you are about to enter a business deal with another individual, you can – through his writing – see his personality, motives and intentions. I am not saying that these are permanent human traits. Handwritings almost always change every three months and that means individuals always change as well. And I always hope they change for the better. Banks can analyze their creditors through this art and business. Presentation becomes relatively easy when you know the likings and working of the investor through his handwriting. There are so many other ways this art can be applied. It’s really a winning tool for negotiation. What were your early experiences as a graphologist? Well, there was this one time when my credibility was tested. I was asked to analyse a public figure’s handwriting at an event. I gave my analysis and they were pleased and surprised because it was accurate.

Some of them even secretly swapped their handwritings, but I noticed it because the handwritings did not correspond with the public persona they had been displaying. Later they admitted that they intentionally did that to test me. You now run a company called the Graphologic Institute. Can you tell us a bit more about this? What I want to do with Graphologic Institute is that, first, I want more people to know about graphology and its benefit by creating workshops so that they can apply it for their business and social use. Second, my plan is to educate people who are interested in becoming a professional graphologist. I am currently working on the preparation for this professional program so they can graduate with an international certificate and they can work locally or overseas as a graphologist with valid and recognized certification. Is this already generating some business for you? Yes, it has and I thank God for that. You see, a lot of the people who heard of me were very hesitant at first and I completely understand. Questions like “will this work?’ ‘has it got any credibility to it?’ are basic doubts everyone had or has I should say but, once I let my analysis do the talking then they know its for real. I am blessed to say that recently I have been invited to speak in a lot of seminars locally and I am positive that greater things are yet to come. What up & coming projects are you working on? As of 2012 I will be contributing to a local magazine, offering handwriting analysis so that’s exciting. Me and my team at the graphologic institute will also be running a few seminars in the next calendar year. I am also working with a couple of foreign graphologic institutes to be able to offer Indonesians ad internationally certified programs in graphology through my institute. www.deborahdewi.com

www.beatmag.com

Debo, how did you get into graphology? My passion in graphology actually started when I learned that handwriting analysis could be used as a way to peek into children’s character and to see their true potential. What started as studying graphology for daily application grew into passion, as I was amazed by its accuracy, simplicity and at the same time, complexity.

Listening TO the Sound of

by erza s.t.

New Year T

ime seems to run fast when you’re having a good time and suddenly we’ve arrived at a New Year again. For classical music lovers, the new year not only brings hope for the future, but it also brings back the tradition of the New Year’s concert.

www.beatmag.com

New Year’s concert tradition was first started in Vienna back in 1939 and conducted by Clemens Krauss. Performing only compositions by Johan Strauss II, the first new year’s concert at the Grober Saal (large hall) in Musikverein was instantly famous and has become a worldwide phenomenon over the years. Many famous conductors including the legendary Herbert Von Karajan were conducting this concert and the Strauss family waltz compositions remain the main program. Interesting enough, you can expect to experience this kind of New Year’s concert that Aula Simfonia is about to perform on the upcoming January 14 and 15. In two days, you will have the opportunity to see the real sound of Vienna coming from the soloist of Symphonia Vienna led by conductor Raphael Erod.

In Indonesia however, the New Year’s Concert has become a tradition in the last five years. It was our own maestro Ananda Sukarlan who initiated the tradition and is consistently presenting Indonesia with his own version of New Year’s Concert. In the past he has made this concert not only in Jakarta but also in Bandung, Jogjakarta and Bali. To start 2012, Ananda Sukarlan is back with his New Year’s concert by presenting a groundbreaking program of two operas in one show. Both operas are in Bahasa and based on Putu Wijaya short stories. The first one is Ananda Sukarlan’s 2011 hit opera: “Laki –Laki Sejati” (A Real Man) that was premiered last September and features soprano colaratura Evelyn Merrelita and mezzosoprano Eriyani Tenga Lunga. Perhaps some of you still remember my preview here on that pocket opera. It is a hilarious debate between a mother and her daughter on finding the real man in life to be with. This

great opera is going to be paired on the second half of the show with Ananda’s new composition: “Mendadak Kaya” (Suddenly Rich). According to the composer, this verbal slapstick comedy is about one’s request to a witchdoctor to make him rich, just to find out the consequences after being rich. It would be a performance of two tenors, featuring Adi Nugroho and Pharel Silaban accompanied with an array of female dancers. Like in any Ananda Sukarlan concert production, this New Year’s concert will also be directed and choreographed by Chendra Panatan. Java New Year Concert 2012 with Ananda Sukarlan and friends will perform in Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya. Around 13 international musicians from the Vienna Symphonia will accompany our own emerging harpist Rama Widi and this New Year’s Concert at Aula Simfonia is not to be missed. We didn’t get much information on the program, however understanding their Viennese nature; we can expect to hear various Strauss compositions at this concert.

Their Fish and Chips are very popular, but there is more to Fish & Co than just that!

www.beatmag.com

F

ish & Co is a very popular seafood restaurant chain that originated in Singapore back in 1998. It is the labor of love for Ricky Chew and Lambert Yeo, and they rightly recognized a niche for a mid-level seafood restaurant in the dining market, giving good-valued seafood, cozy environment, and friendly service. Fish & Co made its way to Indonesia in 2003 and since then they have already opened up 10 outlets; eight in Jakarta and two in Surabaya.

From what we see, the restaurant is always full with customers of all ages looking for a superior seafood experience without breaking the bank. The portions are generous, which is a good thing. But the food is always the main focus and it’s easy to see why this establishment has become a favorite for many. Gone is the usual presentation of fish and chips in a basket and faux newspaper. They put their dishes in a pan. The signature Fish and Chips (69k) is their best seller: Coated dory fish with

Some slight improvements on the traditional fish and chips are also noteworthy. If you’re a fan of cheese, the New York or Philadelphia styles are the way to go. But our favorites are the Danish (79k) and the Singapore (79k) Fish and Chips. The former is stuffed with stringy mozzarella, while the latter is topped with homemade chili crab sauce! Yummy!

If you can’t decide on which seafood to have, go for their delectable platters! The Platter For Two, for example, is a popular choice. A great dish for sharing, it contains dory fish, calamari, black tiger prawns, and mussels at 235k. While for 335k, some king prawns and scallops were substituted for the black tiger prawns and mussels. Some paella-style rice and fries complete the generous delight. y friend Clarissa and I had not seen each other for quite a while. We thought it was time for our little get together. We keep hearing about Qi, a brand new restaurant slash bar that’s making quite a good buzz in the capital city’s culinary scene. The resturant is not too far from Clarissa’s office, so we decided to meet after office hours on a recent weeknight.

The dining area is spacious with a big bar and wine cellar on the left side. A stage is ready for acoustic musical acts available nightly (except Sundays). We started to chat about what has been going on in our respective lives lately and a couple of cocktails accompanied us perfectly. The aptly titled EnerQi (90k) was my choice; a good mix of vodka, rum, orange curaçao, sweet and sour, chopped fresh strawberries, pineapple, red apple, and mango. For Clarissa, she went for The Rych Passion (90k), a unique blend of tequila, vodka, passion syrup, sweet and sour, and interestingly accented with chopped bell peppers! Clarissa and I were in for a good treat! We also ordered an appetizer, the Tuna Tataki (79k); a very tasty dish of rare seared tuna with fresh arugula salad, and served with ginger ponzu sauce. A great start to our evening.

Our pick for the main dishes were the Chicken Piccata (90k) and the amusingly named Rych Drunken Veal Cheek (160k). The former is pan fried chicken leg with parmesan cheese, egg, and Chinese sautéed green vegetables served with spaghetti with tomato and jalapeño-plus garden green salad. The latter is slow cooked veal cheek with a combination of wine sauce, served with spring vegetables and soft mantou buns. These are some new tasty twists of familiar fares. A fantastic fusion of tastes indeed! Our talk continued well after dinner and a group of fine looking female singers and their acoustic accompaniments serenaded us beautifully. A new round of drinks were right on the money; our choice was the Fresca Mexicana (90k); a concoction created by Qi’s general manager, Miss Elly Kusuma. The mix of tequila, triple sec, sweet and sour, cranberry juice, chopped lime and green apple was an excellent way to end our evening on a high note. Clarissa and I already made plans to visit this stylish eatery again and I already picked out the Surf and Turf (140k) for my next meal here. Can’t wait to taste their combo of charbroiled beef tenderloin and jumbo king prawns gratin with angel hair pasta with shell fish jus! By the way, kudos to Executive Chef Alex Sow and his team! Qi is one remarkable restaurant that’s (Budi Iskandar) worth a visit.

www.beatmag.com

Open since October 24, 2011, Qi (pronounced ‘Chi’) is situated just off of the Lagoon Tower of The Sultan Hotel. The location is pretty central, but the place itself is nicely tucked away, far from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta’s traffic. When we went in, it felt like we were transported to a luxury hideaway spot. Qi looks like a very unique place. It is a fine juxtaposition of ethnic and modern chic, with sultry lighting that brings a pleasant dramatic touch. Sure enough, it promises to be a place for fusion food, mainly of Oriental and French cuisines. The restaurant is part of The Rych Concepts which brought us Nan Xiang Chinese restaurant and Airman Planet bar.

Boulangerie

A

ccording to Colette, the rôtisseur (trained chef)from the animated film Ratatouille, you can tell good bread from the sound of the crust. “The symphony of the crackle”, she said to be precise. My advice is that you should follow Colette’s teaching once you’re at Boulangerie, a bakery located at the first floor of Bursa Efek Jakarta Tower 1. Boulangerie is a French term, which means a bakery that specializes in baking and selling bread.

www.beatmag.com

The theme for Boulangerie is “Wheat for Life”, emphasizing healthy manufacturing for their bread products. It follows a healthy lifestyle expected for the customers, who are mostly businessmen and professionals working at SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District). Focusing on fresh and warm breads, Boulangerie serves more than a 100 kinds of nutritious breads. The choices use healthy and fresh ingredients, free of preservatives. That is why Boulangerie’s products only last for a maximum of two days. Healthy and nutritious products sold at Boulangerie include light brioche, long choco grain, double raisin, almond grain, and long cheese grain breads. Boulangerie attaches nutritional facts and the

benefits in all the products they sell, so the customer will know the contents of what they are buying. Such as oats, which are used as a basic ingredient for most of the breads in Boulangerie. Oats have high fiber and are good for diabetes, to lower your cholesterol, risk of cancer and heart disease. The Omega-3 included in the light brioche will help to reduce depression, asthma, and fatigue. Product prices are between 6k - 18k. Other than bread, Boulangerie also serves croissants, pastries, puffs, muffins, buns, quiches, and cookies. They are warm and will brighten your morning! (Dini Siregar)

It’s

confirmed that H&M’s next designer collaboration will be with the Italian brand Marni that many have grown to love because of their prints. The H&M collection with Marni will be available for both women and men, instilled with those Marni signature prints that we’re dying to have at a more affordable price. If you look at Marni’s site, you’ll see that the cheapest dress from Marni is at around $435 and it’s a tunic shirt, as seen at the top corner.

On the collaboration, Consuelo Castiglioni, founder and creative director of Marni said, “I wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all our favorite pieces in signature fabrics and prints. As always, I love juxtaposing prints and colours, mixing modern tribal with Bauhaus graphics and adding sporty utilitarian elements.

The good news is that the collection will include the bold and graphical accessories that Marni are famous for, as well as shoes. While the collection will only be available in March 2012, some pictures are already flying around the internet so we can enjoy the visuals until the day comes.

The collection is going to be prints with strong colours that can be worn together that can look complementary or clashing. With silhouettes that are known as Marni’s signature, like their full pleated skirts, dresses, cropped trousers and jacquard knit are deemed to make our wallet scream!

Sigur Rós Inni

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Y

ou should know Sigur Rós if ambient-shoe-gazing music is your thing. If this album is a journey, it’s a trip from a silent pale howl to an atmospheric ambient world. I dare to say tracks like Hoppipola and Inni are the best mood control songs of the entire album. It’s distinctively Icelandic, recorded live, ethereal and dark with a hint of dreamy and depressive themes. This kind of album is so darkly melodic that it could either offer people inspiration or perhaps suicidal tendencies depending on your mental constitution.

www.beatmag.com

Kate Rusby While Mortals Sleep It

’s a ‘folk Christmas album’ if you were wondering why we included it. This album is far from the familiar commercial radio’s catchy holiday choir or cheerful pop songs. It’s the kind of songs you want to play in your living room at Christmas when you’re expecting an old friend or big family gathering, so its sort of a calm way to celebrate, if you’re a acoustic-folk fan and too cool for the regular old holiday stuff. Traditional songs like Joy to the World and Little Town of Bethlehem might be the tracks you want to increase the volume on. Happy Christmas folks. [Dedi K & Friends]

Ok

So, you’ve been to one to many Christmas parties, have gobbled the last traces of delicious minced pie, have eaten the remainders of all the stocking candy and have taken part in binge drinking every single night (before this island runs out of booze). Am I right? The holiday season is all the glory but unfortunately it has left you with a bloated tummy, a hangover that won’t go away and an energy level close to nil. If you feel you are too fragile for some regular physical activity, here are some easy tips to get you back on the fit bandwagon (slowly but surely…I promise).

If you have a pool, use it Swimming can activate your blood circulation; build endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. It can also serve well as a starter fitness program in building up your stamina. Add psyllium husk to your breakfast The holiday deserts, breakfast sausages and pies may have clogged your system a little. Psyllium is a dietary fiber that can improve and maintain regular GI transit. One tablespoon of psyllium husk to your muesli, fruit or yoghurt in the morning can neutralize your colon and can help un-bloat your Santa stomach. Dance as if no one’s watching Throw out your Christmas tunes and put on some Tiesto. 10 minutes of crazy dance moves will make you sweat. Have a salad Consume salad and raw vegetables on a regular basis and you may have higher concentrations

of folic acid, vitamins C and E, lycopene and alpha and beta carotene in the bloodstream. If you eat a plain salad for one meal a day, it may very quickly reverse your blood-alcohol levels in your system. Bring on the good nutrients! Take a siesta A simple power nap can go a long way. In this humidity and heat, it can be hard charging through the day like a Power Ranger (especially with all that turkey in your tummy).Napping for just 20 to 30 minutes can help improve your alertness, performance and mood. Lay low The month of January should really be about reflection and planning the next months ahead. Embrace yourself, laugh a little and enjoy the simple things. Instead of excessive buffet gorging, try to just sit and be. You can only be healthy if you give yourself some ‘me’ time.

Sherlock Holmes and his loyal sidekick, Dr. Watson, are back to solve a mystery case of royal murder that leads to a puzzled adventure to save the world. Together they must join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest and smartest adversary ever, Professor Moriarty who plans to change the history of the world. Most of us recognize these renowned characters from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels, yet the cast, both old and new, in this sequel are able to make you tense, laugh and seduce you. Suit up your trench coat and tune in your brain, detective!

The Ides of March

Drama, Suspense. Writer & Director: George Clooney. Writers: Grant Heslov, Beau Willimon. Cast: George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei.

The Ides of March tells the story during the uptight last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential election, when a talented campaign press secretary, Stephen Meyers (Ryan Gosling), finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to overturn his candidate’s, Mike Morris (George Clooney), shot at the presidency. As writer, director and also an actor in this movie, George Clooney is bringing star-studded performances of awardwinning senior actors and actress as well as rising stars to grasp your full attention. Even if you’re an anti-politics kind of person you’ll be focused on the realistic portrayal of a political campaign. Hold your banner and elect wisely based on your morals.

New Year’s Eve Comedy, Romance. Director: Garry Marshall. Writer: Katherine Fugate.

Another ensemble piece with a holiday theme by director Gary Marshall might not interest you much, particularly after you found “Valentine’s Day” just ordinary. Worry not, this kind of film is actually made as light-watching fun, and you might shed tears or melt in romance a bit because of its emotional plot. From senior award-winning to young acclaimed actors and actresses, one thing you can bet on is the goodlooking faces. Bring along your date and some best friends or maybe your family with buckets of popcorn for New Year celebration!

www.beatmag.com

guitar body turns white, it has a beautiful stylish woman on the surface. Musical instruments with sound compositions presented in the form of a unique and quiet solitude. Don’t think it’s a real guitar, it’s a guitar-shaped neon box and digital prints portray beautiful figures of singers. Likewise, the winged violin knives of various types, reminiscent of a Swiss Army knife, are also there. Is there a changing art form? No, it’s the work of an artist cum musician named Hadi Soesanto presenting the exhibition “Tone That Never fades”. In the canvas these artists explore more of the bodies of women who are plump and beautiful. Not merely the canvas, any musical instrument he uses as the working medium. For Hadi Soesanto, just like a musical performance, one can not walk alone. It takes the teamwork and collaboration of several musicians. The difference does not create disharmony, but a harmony. From his works we can see a problem in popular culture in the reality of lower class society. We can always hear songs, tones that never fade from their hard bitter lives. Hadi Soesanto is an artist and musician. He does visual art and performing art. In creating his works, he always combines many elements of art and aesthetic moments. He has done a lot of art exhibitions and workshops, both at home and abroad. In 1996 he began to do performing art with a keyboard he played with music groups in Yogyakarta. According to Hadi, differences do not make disharmony at all. A harmony depends on the unity of musicians with their respective instruments. There is a work combining a violin and piano. We also have a guitar-shaped neon box and a digitally printed image of a musician. Inspired by the current big waves of piracy, he has created a work made of covers and compact disks of piracy products.

His medium of expression breaks through the boundaries of reality, a fact which did not subside in such social and cultural conditions of the people of Indonesia now. Really, life is sometimes rather bitter!

“Perfect Offerings” is FX Lucky’s first solo exhibition and showcases his narratives that embody various depictions of biblical stories and scriptures, and his passion in spirituality. Lucky, who has been travelling around the world in his early years, works

with different mediums to create his personal signature. It is shown in his exhibition title that it is based on the biblical accounts of a widow who put everything she had as an offer to God.

Loaves and the Two Fishes” he playfully adds two gold fishes inspired by Lee Man Fong. On the painting “Becoming the Image of the Christ”, he modified Ai Weiwei’s Coca-Cola vase.

His distinctive artistic achievement over the years has developed Lucky’s aesthetic sense as well as creative skills to make illusionary dimensional space with sumptuous details. In “Clay in Potter’s Hand”, he is gently reminding us the vulnerability of human beings in the creator’s hand, while in “Christ Army” he uses a Swiss Army knife as a metaphor of modern day usefulness and adaptability.

These biblical artworks are your perfect visual pleasures for the very Christian holiday of Christmas.

He also has incorporated social elements into his works in order to juxtapose the contemporary world and social culture. In “Golden Apples on Silver Plate”, he uses batik table cloth as a representation of his origins. Whereas on “Five

Construction on Nusa Dua to Benoa Toll Road to Start in Two Weeks State Enterprise Minister (BUMN) Dahlan Iskan recently stated that the development of the Nusa Dua-AirportBenoa (NDB) toll will start at the end of December. “I will be back in Bali in two weeks to formally open the construction of the toll, which will run parallel to the existing by-pass road over the mangrove swamp,” said Iskan during an address at the Bali Democracy Forum. Iskan added that the NDB toll project will help to solve South Bali’s traffic problem, especially in the areas of South Denpasar and Badung. “The project must be completed before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit is held in 2013.” Iskan confirmed that the government of Bali welcomes investment in the project. “No matter how much the investment is, we are open to the idea,” he said. The Chairman of the Bali Legislative Council (DPRD), AA Ngurah Oka Ratmadi, also seemed enthusiastic about investing in the project, arguing that Bali should participate in major investment projects on the island. “The DPRD Bali is excited to invest and have some shares in this NDB toll project,” he said. Nestled neatly on Seminyak’s ‘eat street’, Café Bali has been effortlessly dishing up quality international fare to the gourmands of Bali for almost five years now. This is can be readily attributed to the sheer diversity of everything about the place. The charming French colonial ‘Betawi house’ premises has a unique ambience that harks back to a nostalgic golden era. Step behind the screen of leafy plants separating the outside verandah from the road and enter Café Bali’s world of rustic charm. of colour among a palette of washed out whites, neutral shades and distressed paintwork. A feature wall with antique mirrors and floral wallpaper gives a distinct chateau feel, echoed in the louvred shutters and wicker lounging chairs at the front. Further back, stained glass panels open on to a small courtyard area with a low table and comfy sofas furnished with plush velvet cushions, the perfect place to get ready for a few of the tasty dishes off the hugely varied menu that takes inspiration from just about everywhere, from Dutch to dim sum. The all day menu covers breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7am till 11.30pm, and is indeed a real challenge deciding which culinary route to embark upon. First up we share a salmon and mango salad with rocket and feta cheese (59k), which is a relatively easy choice considering the quality of the mangoes around Bali at the moment. A pleasing mix of fruity and savoury, it goes down a treat and gets the old tastebuds in gear ready for the mains. Speaking of which, we go for the nicely spicy oriental tuna tartare with ginger avocado & sesame oil spicy (60k), and the local style pepes ikan served with three colours of rice (49k), the tuna just nudging out the ikan/fish in my humble opinion.

Looking for that slice of colonial nostalgia? You won’t get much better than Café Bali, a true original and ‘eats street’ institution. Dan Ashcroft

Somewhat famous for its dessert list, we decide to order up the sweet delight for two (50k), which gives a nice sampler of everything on offer, the standout for me being the moist nutty chocolate brownies with a dollop of natural vanilla ice cream on top. Being something of a fromage freak, I’m unable to pass up on the cheese plate (90k), which comes with a selection of delightfully pokey soft and hard cheeses along with slices of fresh apple and walnuts. Pure perfection, and all washed down with a sneaky Irish coffee (70k).

He’s a 24-years-old professional skateboarder from Tabanan who has won several national and international competitions and also has a daytime job as a graphic designer. Even with his busy schedule, Yogi took some time off to speak to The Beat.

beatmag.com 094

What made you interested in skateboarding? It started while I was still at junior high school, many years ago. At that time, Tony Hawk’s playstation games were booming, I played that games a lot and then became interested to try real skateboarding. At first, I was borrowing a friend’s board and we’d like to skate it in the schoolyard then I joined the skater community and a few people there promoted me so I could get a sponsor. Lucky you…so what sponsor was that? My first and number one sponsor is Cult, they supply me with some clothes and boards. They also pay for my school and other stuff if I compete in competitions. Until now? Yep, but now I also got more stuff from Motion, 69 Slam and Mash Potatoes. So, more and more freebies…great! What do you get from them all? Yes, I get boxers from 69 Slam, shoes from Etnies, boards from Motion and apparel from Mash Potatoes. What kind of music do you like? I like The Strokes, Empire of the Sun, Phoenix, and The Postal Service What about favorite movies? I love thrillers, like Saw…those kinds of movies that have blood everywhere and test your nerves are always fun to watch! What is your hobby? Besides skateboarding of course… Playing futsal and drawing. What’s your favorite spot to skate in Bali? In Gianyar bus station, Motion, Taman Festival Bali and Centro. Most of those are public places; do you have any obstacles when skating there? My friends and I used to like skating in Centro so much because the stairs there are challenging, but a few guys who were skating there broke something so now security’s banned everyone from skating there. How about injuries, have you ever broken your bones or something? Thank God, I never had a bad accident or injury; I try to play it safe. My worst was a back injury that made me have to stay in bed for a week. What is your best achievement? All competitions are fun, especially when you win something, but I got to say that I felt really lucky when I won a gold medal at the 2nd Asian Indoor Games 2007 in Macau. I still can’t believe that I was able to win that competition, just so lucky back then I guess.

A few months ago you also won 2nd place in Billabong “City Squared Indo” Skateboarding Competition and you won a lot of competitions before that; you must be famous and have many fans now. I actually feel kind of awkward with the term fans. For me it’s better if they see me just like friends. Luckily in Bali I have no fans, they treat me like a normal guy here, but in other cities there were some people who’d like to take some pictures or cheer you on. Honestly, it makes me quite nervous. Does popularity mean that it’s easier for you to get a chick? No, it’s not like that at all. I’m just living my life normally and I like it that way. How about your way to celebrate your winnings? Party hard like a rock star? No, I don’t like parties like clubbing or drinking, I prefer to treat my friends to eat out at a restaurant or barbequing somewhere and save the rest of my money. What’s your future plans? I want to help some friends, teach them some styles, and hopefully, go to Australia. Why Australia? My ambition would be to go overseas and work in another country. Australia seems nice and skaters there are having more benefits, so if you go pro there, you can just focus on skateboarding and no need to have a daytime job. What if you can make the government more aware about Indonesian skaters’ achievements and support them? I hope they will. In Makassar, the local government is actually supporting them now. They built a nice skate park there so all the skaters have a good venue to skate. How about in Bali? We have a local organization called Persatuan Bali Skater that always lobbies the government. They said that there is a land that’s been prepared for a skate park venue but I don’t know about the progress. Do you have any message for them then? For Bali government, I hope u can see skaters in positive way, build a nice skater park to support our local skaters. How about for people who want to be professional skaters? Never be afraid to try, if you want to make progress, you have to join a community so you can learn from people there. The most important thing is you have to have a good attitude. Don’t forget to pray and never skate with an empty stomach. You have to eat and drink first before you skate.

veryone has heard of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and everyone who watched the show must surely remember Will Smith’s best friend Jazz. Although Jazzy Jeff may have been immortalized in pop culture for that role, in the music world, he is recognized as one of the best DJs the world has seen. A DJ’s DJ, Jazzy Jeff was tearing up the Stones in what can be described as the best set many local DJs have ever seen. His technical perfection and great track selection made for a memorable night for those lucky enough to be there.

Ryoshi

Monday 12 Dec

House of Jazz ainy nights usually means quiet events, but not at Ryoshi. There were a fair amount of folks eating dinner and watching the Rio Sidik Quartet, which consists of Rio Sidik (trumpet), Edi (drum), Ito Kurdi (bass), and Eric Sondhy (piano/marcolustep/percussion). They played a variety of jazz songs with their own style, talked to the crowd between songs, and just generally had a good time which was well absorbed by the audience.

The rain coming down at sunset didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and as the night came down, the weather was getting better and more folks were lining up for dinner. DJ Renny (wilmix) warmed the night with some classy chilled out tunes.
