With each New Year comes a chance to get it right, it’s the proverbial clean slate. We now find ourselves adjusting and settling into this new season. Resolutions aside, 2012 is shaping up to be quite an eventful year for us here in the capital and the rest of Indonesia. Upcoming marquee events like the International Java Jazz Festival (the largest jazz festival in South East Asia), the Karate World Cup, the Jakarta International Fabric Show, the Ambon Jazz Plus Festival, and so much more. This is fast becoming the ‘it’ city in the Southeast region, notorious for its nightlife and all round good times. We at The Beat are proud to be part of this megapolitan evolution. Dynamic approaches are set in place for a much greener Jakarta as well, community based movements are set to properly introduce urban farming to the nation’s capital. This, combined with other public initiatives is set to make the big durian a much more vibrant and eclectic capital city. The fact is, the only constant thing in life is change, so, get ready readers because this city is getting a much needed facelift and we are all a part of it.

Endah N Rhesa are now starting to make their 3rd album. They will launch the album in mid or late 2012.
What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? E: It was Mr. Big’s Lean into It . I started to play an electric guitar when I was nine years old and my big brother forced me to buy Mr. Big album and challenged me to learn “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind’s guitar intro. And yes, I did it perfectly. Ha ha ha! R: Tommy Page’s Shoulder to Cry On. All my family and friends bought that album because the song was so popular at that time. So, I thought, I had to follow the trend too. Ha ha ha! What are your all-time favorite albums? E: - OST The Lion King album. I love the music, the composition, arrangement, lyrics, and the voice of characters from the album. The album is good for any situation and mood. It cheers me up! - Californication (Red Hot Chilli Pepper). I know that Frusciante lost his guitar skills at that time. But, he has his unique guitar licks and the power of rhythm in this album. Sexy! And all Béla Fleck & the Flecktones albums.... they are just... perfect! R: - Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chilli Pepper. Because it’s the golden era of John Frusciante’s guitar skills. - Under the Table and Dreaming by Dave Matthew’s Band. It inspired me a lot in how to play acoustic guitar in different way. What was the worst record you ever purchased? E: I dont remember the title of the album. I just remember that I bought one instrumental album as a present for my dad many years ago. And its sound was bad! All of the instruments were using BAD MIDI sampling. No dynamic or intonation in the notes. The musical expression was FLAT! The guitar sampling was terrible; the only good sound was the piano! Hahaha! You can imagine my
Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? E: I want to be a young professional classical guitarist like Thibault Cauvin of France. R: Steve Jobs. What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy? E: Buy! Steven Tyler’s “Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?” I give it nine out of 10! Many secrets revealed! I love Steven Tyler. It’s interesting to get a little peek into the life of a rockstar. Hahaha! R: Buy. Home Recording Studio: Build it Like a Pro. I give it perfect score, 10 out of 10! It helps me to make it in my house. Hahaha!

face when I gave it to my dad and listened to it together with him. I took back the CD and bought him THE REAL MUSIC: Frank Sinatra Orchestra. R: I never regret the albums I buy. Even though the music is not so good, but the artwork cover looks good on my rack.
What new movie should people see? Why? E: Sherlock Holmes. It’s outstanding. They can put the tension on from the beginning ‘till the end of the movie. Very awesome details. The story, music and pictures are stunning! Well, even though I prefer Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes TV series) to Robert Downey Jr., but still I think it is a good movie based on its production. R: Tintin (2011). You have to watch it because it uses great animation technology that has never been used before. What album do you choose to start your weekend? E: Actually, there is no particular music to start the weekend, but if I want to start my weekend with working (performing with Endah N Rhesa), I decide to listen to Béla Fleck & The Flecktones Live at the Quick . I love to catch their chemistry while they’re jamming on the stage so it can boost my mood when I’m on stage too. R: Richard Bona’s album named TIKI. It’s cheerful. And song/album you choose to end your weekend? E: Anything... it won’t ruin my mood. Weekdays means holidays! Hahaha... musician starts the weekend on weekdays. (wink) R: TOR. The album from TOR that I’ve coproduced. It will be released soon. [Rudolph Dethu]
www.beatmag.com
What music are you into at the moment? E (Endah): Oh, I love the Primus album titled Antipop. I listen to it over and over again and never get bored. When I listen to the music, I always try to have the musician’s perspective, in this case, its Primus. I’m always curious about how they can make such great guitar licks and unpredictable chord progressions. Primus is totally insane. R (Rhesa): The Rocket Science album by Béla Fleck & The Flecktones. Maybe it’s gonna be their last album. I hope it’s not. Because they (Béla Fleck, Victor Wooten, Future Man, Howard Levy) are getting older and it’s the Béla Fleck & the Flecktones original formation. Very sentimental…

Different markets in different countries in the world should be one of a kind and an interesting place to explore. Jakarta markets are no different, and TBJ is going to take you to several unique markets from the North to the South of our lovely town. (Dini Siregar)
Pasar Ular / Pa-Ul (Ular Market) Pasar Rawa Belong (Rawa Belong Market) Flowers to light up your eyes and to soothe your nose are what you get if you go to this market. Rawa Belong Market is one of the largest flower markets in Southeast Asia. They sell orchids, roses, jasmines, tulips, lilies and other flowers. This market has two time spans for different flower deliveries. From 2 to 6am, fresh flowers will be delivered from Bandung and Sukabumi. Whereas from 2 to 9pm, it’s time for the flowers from Sumatera to be delivered. Located at: Jalan Sulaeman, Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta Barat. Pasar Pagi Asemk a
www.beatmag.com
(Asemk a Morning Market) Formerly called Pasar Pagi Lama, this particular market specializes in selling a wide variety of women’s accessories, such as long and short necklaces, bracelets, earrings, hair accessories, with a low negotiable price. A lot of the items are imported from China and Taiwan, but Indonesian craftsmen also have their work sold here. To be noted, not all the kiosk at Asemka sell retail, some also sell wholesale. The more quantity you buy, the lower the price you can get. Located at: Jalan Asemka, Taman Sari, Jakarta 11110.
Ular means snake in Bahasa Indonesia. But that doesn’t mean that this market sells those scary reptilians. Pasar Ular got its name due to its location, which is at one long narrow street (about 1,5 meter wide) that resembles a snake if seen from above. Pasar Ular’s kiosks sell a variety of things, from clothes to electronics, from counterfeited products to 100% genuine stuff. If you’re looking for good quality shoes, jackets, bags or leather wallets, but don’t have enough funds to buy them, you should come here. You just have to be smart and careful, and recognized which is real and which is a knock-off. What is certain is they are all at crazy low prices. Located at: There are two location of Pasar Ular, the first one is at Jalan Raya Plumpang, and the other one is at Jalan Kebon Bawang, both at North Jakarta.

the downpours,
will you be singin’ in the rain?
Living in a tropical country with its fair share of heavy rain, we still seem to get caught out when it really pours. Jim Read goes for a sing in the .....
My usual, 20-minute ojek (motorcycle taxi) journey became an epic, two-and-a-half-hour expedition as I first searched for a taxi and then got caught in near gridlock, all with no let-up from the incessant rain. People complained about it for days and weeks later, as some did not arrive home until the early hours of the morning. That was probably the worst example of Jakarta rain-induced traffic chaos in living memory. We’d better prepare ourselves, though, for the government’s weather agency has been giving stark warnings that this year’s wet season will peak from mid-January to mid-February. What’s more, it will coincide with two high tides in January, so flooding in northern parts of the city is highly likely. Ominously, we are in the fifth year of what seems to be a five-yearly cycle of exceptionally heavy rains – remember early 2002 and 2007? The city authorities have been saying for weeks now they’ve been preparing for the worst but you can imagine what will happen once the deluge begins. Flooding will occur, as the drainage system will get clogged up due to the sheer amount of rubbish that’s been swept into it (how often do you witness that, by the way?) while the traffic, already moving at snail’s pace, will grind to a halt completely. One can only imagine what the scene will be like at locations where traffic congestion is already bad, for example where major road improvement projects are still ongoing – like right in front of Mal Ambassador, Jl. Dr Satrio.
Perhaps the most surprising aspect is how we, as individuals, behave. When I first lived in Jakarta, many years ago, I was frequently surprised (annoyed, even) at how people seemed so unprepared for rain. ‘Why don’t they carry umbrellas?’ I thought. Having been here for a while, I find myself as guilty as all those other umbrella-less people, reliant on the boys (yes, it’s still mainly boys that do it) who offer you an umbrella while they get soaked walking alongside you. Somehow they still manage to keep smiling, though. I remember once being caught in Jakarta, completely unprepared for heavy rain. Although it was an overcast day, there was no prior warning that the heavens were about to open. When that happened, I was about as far as it was possible to be from any form of shelter like a tree, bus stop or shop doorway. Within seconds, I was as drenched as if I’d been standing, fully clothed, in a shower with the water running at full blast. By then there was no point in seeking shelter so I carried on walking through the downpour, much to the surprise of onlookers. I felt almost like breaking into a chorus from that iconic scene in the film musical Singin’ in the Rain: Gene Kelly gets drenched and ends up using his umbrella as an impromptu dancing partner and kicking the rain in the gutter, as a raincoat-clad cop looks on. You’re likely to get wet one way or another over the next few weeks so instead of cursing you’ve forgotten your umbrella or raincoat take a deep breath and remember that it’s an inevitable part of living in the tropics. After all, even Orchard Road sometimes gets flooded in that most well-organised of cities, Singapore.

idung Island is the new paradise that everyone’s been talking about, especially among backpackers. It is the largest island and the center sub district of the Kepulauan Seribu archipelagos located at the north of Jakarta. The island is populated with 3000 families, mostly fishermen. On the east side of this island, there’s the Pulau Tidung Kecil (the small Tidung Island) that is connected by a two kilometer long bridge called Jembatan Cinta (Love Bridge). Walking along the wooden bridge, you can see the clear water below, with coral and colorful fishes everywhere. It was the place where Fatahillah (an Indonesian warrior) and his troops took refuge from the Dutch back in the old days, thus the name Tidung, which means ‘shelter’. But these days, Tidung Island is the place where regular people take “refuge” from their daily lives, and enjoy the secluded island living provided, but still with cool activities to look forward to, such as snorkeling, fishing, and some water sports, or exploring the island riding a bicycle with friends and families. he word ‘tarot is believed to originate from the arabic word turuc which means ‘four pathways’. Somewhere between the year 1430 & 1450 tarot cards were believed to be created in northern Italy with allegorical illustrations added to the common four-suit pack. These new decks were named ‘carte da trionfi’ or triumph cards, additional cards became simply known as trionfi or what we now know as trump cards.
The story of tarot cards and tarot reading continues to evolve and today finds itself a growing trend in the Capital city. Curious individuals now turn to this ancient art to reveal glimpses of the future, of what is to be. Questions range from romance to finance, from family to friends and so much more. Are you also a curious soul? Well, if you are then meet Alfa Reva. The Jakarta resident who started his career as a tarot card reader in Semarang has over ten years experience under his belt. Alfa is as reliable as it gets when it comes to reading these decks of wisdom. In his own words tarot card is a medium to look into the future and assess and manage the risks from these visions. After all what good is it to know the future and be able to nothing about it. The Beat sits down with Alfa and discusses a few things coming up in 2012.
A. I was inspired to this because my sister, Mieke Rose, is herself a professional tarot reader and so from there I picked up a couple of tricks and decided that I wanted to pursue it. I have been doing this for over 10 years now and don’t see my self stopping. Q. What sort of reactions do you get when you tell people that you are a tarot reader? A. Oh they love it. People get excited about my profession and almost immediately want me to do a reading for them. Haha. Unfortunately only introductions are free, I’ve got to make a living you see.
difficulty through your spending habits it gives you a wake up call, it allows you time to make the right choices, hence completely changing the result of the reading or minimizing its effects. It allows you to make wiser decisions. Q. Interesting, I am sure a lot of people will be looking for your services. Where can we find you? A. For those interested in sitting down for a reading session they can find me in one of the cafes/lounge in Gandaria City mall. I am there once a week for consultation or you can always contact me directly at 0818 0749 1975 or email me at r3Valdy@yahoo.com Q. The good and bad of your job?
Q. A lot of people seem to think that tarot reading is some sort of a cult. What’s your take on this?
A. The Good is when my reading brings with it a solution for the problem and the bad is when I have to break some bad news.
A. Well you know people are entitled to their opinions. For me its an art and for many who have experienced tarot reading I am sure they would agree. This is not some dark art filled with elements of wizardry and ideas like that. I think it’s misunderstood because it is ancient and ancient art brings with it a lot of weird and wonderful stories. Rest assured a session with me is not going to leave you with the creeps.
Q. Finally, what can you reveal to The Beat and our readers for the year ahead?
Q. For the tarot baby or the skeptics out there, explain the benefits of tarot reading. A. OK, basically tarot reading is a medium to foretell or foresee the future. Now what you see can then be altered and changed. For example if the reading shows that you will face a financial
A. 2012. One thing is for sure, it is going to be unique. There will be a lot of movements and unpredictable shifts in nature that will force humankind to pay more attention and make careful decisions when it comes to the environment around them. Globally the economic condition will recover and also a lot of socially active movements will be more effective in helping fellow humans raise a lot their standard of living and in the entertainment world true quality will stand out and those who have relied purely on physical or financial traits will be slowly and surely eliminated. Its definitely a year of good hope.

If you think you haven’t had enough New Year’s Concerts this year, then think again, here is another one to fulfill your classical music desires. Dr. Stephen Tong of Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and Jakarta Oratorio Society is continuing the New Year’s concert tradition again this year and plans to perform this coming January 21, 2012.
To excite your classical appetite, Dr. Stephen Tong chooses Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major or known as the Emperor Waltz. It is not everyday we can hear this 40 minute concerto performed in Jakarta. Written between 1809 and 1811, The Emperor Concerto was Beethoven’s last piano concerto. Though he had lost his hearing entirely by this time, it didn’t prevent him from composing music and this piano concerto is the proof. It is definitely a rare treat to enjoy. From Beethoven, the upcoming New Year’s Concert 2012 goes to Haydn’s renown work: The Seasons. After the success of Haydn’s previous oratorio “The Creation” in 1798, he was led to compose “The Seasons”. Based from the English
poem “The Seasons” by James Thomson (17001748), this composition is written for a fairly large late-classical orchestra, a chorus singing mostly in four parts, and three vocal soloists representing archetypal country folk of a bass, a tenor and a soprano. The oratorio is divided into four parts (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) with the usual recitatives, arias, choruses and ensemble numbers. Though this work perhaps is not as popular as “The Creation”, many critics appreciate and consider it as one of the greatest works in the century and to be more musical than the first oratorio. “No music has elated me more in old age then The Seasons”, said classical music critic Daniel Heartz. So, if you think you haven’t had enough classical music already at the beginning of 2012, this New Year’s Concert will definitely fulfill your classical music hunger.

Perhaps there is no need to introduce the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and Jakarta Oratorio Society. They are known as the residents at Aula Simfonia Jakarta and are under the baton of Dr. Stephen Tong. They regularly entertain Jakarta classical music lovers and this time, they are going to inspire you with Beethoven and Haydn.

KOPITIAM
www.beatmag.com
Get the taste of South East Asian delights, traditional and not so traditional, at this cozy eatery. kopitiam (or kopi tiam) is a traditional breakfast and coffee shop found in South East Asia. The word ‘kopitiam’ is derived from the Malay word for coffee (kopi), and the Hokkien Chinese word for shop (tiam). If you’ve been to Singapore or Malaysia, you might be familiar with this type of institution. The menu typically features simple offerings: a variety of foods based on eggs, toast, and kaya, plus coffee, tea, and Milo chocolate drink. The place is usually also kept as basic as possible.
But to keep up with the times, modern kopitiams are now getting a makeover. Nowadays it’s very common to find a kopitiam in the comfort of air conditioned shopping malls and the look of the restaurant has also gone modern, but the food is mostly still more the traditional, time-honored fare. Welcome to Kopitiam. This is a modern Indonesian restaurant chain using this old style concept. Kopitiam now have seven outlets in Jakarta and we recently visited their newest one at Central Park Mall which opened on December 1, 2011.
These is all typical Singaporean/Malaysian fare, but there’s something familiar about it for our Indonesian taste buds. Should you want something more ‘local’, the Oxtail Fried Rice (58k) hits just the right spot.

The restaurant has a modern, inviting décor. Light colored wood dominates the room, nicely accented by drawings of people dining al fresco. Check out the huge coffee bean decoration on the ceiling. A nice quirky touch.
As for the drinks, the wonderful black tea and condensed milk mix of Kopitiam Teh Tarik (21k) is always a firm choice, hot or cold. They also have plenty of coffee and tea drinks to savor, but the Iced Milo Dinosaur (22k) is a must try! From Australia to Indonesia, La Porchetta serves some of the freshest, tastiest pizzas and pastas around!
I
was in Kemang with a couple of friends and wondering where to have dinner. We decided on La Porchetta, a pizza joint in the La Codefin complex. Pizza has always been our group’s favorite to eat and there’s nothing like sharing good pizza with your close pals. It all started in Carlton, Victoria, Australia in the mid ‘80s. La Porchetta was the brainchild of ‘Rocky’, a businessman who had been immortalized as the restaurant’s mascot. The business grew big in Australia, and it is now the country’s
This casual eatery has become a firm favorite over the years with its extensive, fresh pizza and pasta menu. The restaurant features a cozy interior with warm wood, comfortable seats, combined with fast and friendly service. La Porchetta also has a patio overlooking the ever active Kemang Street, and that’s where we sat down. Should you want a more intimate and cooler setting, there’s a fully air conditioned enclosed area for you. Actually, it is the only one available in all the restaurants at La Codefin. We decided to start with the Mediterranean Salad (35k); a nice blend of mixed veggies, topped with some feta cheese and tangy vinaigrette dressing. The Chicken Wings (39k) were next on our table. The home made sweet and spicy sauce is full of flavor and complimented the crispy wings very well. It’s a definite must try!
Since we were sharing the food, we ordered a couple of pizzas, starting with the regular sized half Meat Lovers and half Mushroom (79k). The Meat Lovers part comes packed with a tasty home made tomato sauce base, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, smoked beef, minced beef, and bacon pieces. While the Mushroom one is less complicated but still delectable; with the tomato sauce base, mozzarella, and freshly sliced button mushrooms.

number one pizza chain. La Porchetta made its way to Indonesia a few years back, and we actually visited its newest outlet, opened on June 25, 2011.
We also ordered a regular sized Focaccia Ripiena Cheese (59k); a home made pizza layered with mozzarella, garlic, and olive oil. Simple, yet scrumptious. The pasta choices are also extensive. A dish of Ravioli with Creamy Pesto (53k) also made its way to our table; mozzarella filled ravioli doused with a rich pesto sauce, pine nuts, fresh basil, garlic, olive oil, and topped with some grated parmesan. Delicioso!
The Lasagna (39k) rounded up our order. There’s just something special about this dish that seems Now, La Porchetta has about 20 different choices to win everyone’s hearts. of pizzas, which comes in three sizes: regular (11 inches), large (13 in.), and family (15 in.). There’s La Porchetta’s pizzas and pastas are always fresh, something for everyone. And the attentive staff made on the premises, every time. Another informed us that you can have half-and-half piece of information that we learned: many selections on your pizza pan. Good to know. prestigious international concerts organized by top local promoters have used La Porchetta as their main catering company, especially for their foreign artists. That just speaks volumes about their top quality. La Porchetta also has a full on outside catering service, equipped with pizza/ pasta maker. How about that for freshness!

Jakarta may have its share of pizzerias, but La Porchetta is already becoming a hands down favorite. We thoroughly enjoyed our picks, and there are still a lot of choices to try. Our next visit is already on the cards! (Budi Iskandar)

Drake Take Care
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
Y
oung Money record’s golden boy beside Lil Wayne is Drake. Tons of hustleminded, arrogant, and money-oriented lyrics are spat out by Drake in the album, that’s what’s up. But the interesting part about it is that it’s not who he really is now. So the stories in this album are most likely young Drake’s mind set back in the days when he was on the way to success. I was about to put three stars, but this fact adds a reason to put another half star. Musically, it is produced with Young Money’s typical –crunchy, minimal soul, computer and loop beats, it’s maybe something that the serious hip hop listener won’t take seriously. Yet its definitely a chart climber and money maker... and that’s what Drake is all about.

Tom Waits Bad As me W
ould you do what Tom Waits did when you’re sixty something? Seventeen albums, eccentric performances, and a bunch of crazy ideas under his fendora hat? This album is somewhat like a mishmash of funk-fuled drum and kicks, piano, baritone sax, and spastic guitar stabs. The kind of album we want to hear, saying it’s ok to make mistakes and let’s celebrate that. Judge the album by its master. Tom Waits is the quintessential badass poet of our times.

Let’s Win the Battle!
By: @JohanJT
Memasuki awal bulan di tahun yang baru ini, pastinya kamu juga sudah menyiapkan daftar resolusi yang ingin dicapai tahun ini dong? The Darkest Hour Action, Sci-fi, Thriller. Director: Chris Gorak. Writers: John Spaihts, Leslie Bohem. Cast: Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella, Joel Kinnaman, Rachael Taylor. Taking place in Russia’s capital, Moscow, five young people find themselves stranded amidst a sudden alien invasion. Together, though frustrated, they must fight to survive the devastating alien attack and find any hope of survival. The film might not be the best highlight for Emile Hirsch’s (Into the Wild) filmography, yet it will still bring you a thrilling atmosphere from start to finish alongside plausible special effects in 3D projection. Ensure your flashlight’s batteries won’t run out during The Darkest Hour in cinema!

Welcoming Tangerine Tango
to 2012
F
ans of orange, rejoice! Pantone announced Tangerine Tango as the color of the year.
Tangerine Tango is described as a “spirited reddish orange” that resembles sunsets. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says it’s also, “Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive. Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” Dramatic, energetic, seductive… No wonder it’s such a hot color for Spring 2012! And word says it will still be a favorite until Fall 2012. Even if tangerine is your color and you can’t wait to tango with it, you shouldn’t come out in a total ray of sunset a.k.a. going head-to-toe. We recommend starting small, with a pair of shoes, a handbag, or a scarf. But we know some of you beauty-heads probably couldn’t care for this. But what if we tell you that Pantone will be partnering with Sephora to create a limited-edition beauty range inspired by this color of the year?
www.beatmag.com
Rumour has it that Sephora and Pantone are collaborating to produce something exciting! When you talk about colors, who would be better than
Pantone, the renowned authority in colors that you can turn to? Each season, Pantone would come up with a colour forecasting chart that will lead the way for where the colors are heading in terms of fashion and beauty. A Pantone-branded makeup line is something that we’re looking forward to. We could see the collaboration as soon as March 2012, just in time to bring in some new colours and investing in what’s actually in season. Expect something that is in line with the Pantone seasonal color guide from the collaboration, thus helping us not to worry whether we’re buying the correct color for the season. WWD reported that we can expect a majority of tangerine and orange in the first collection from the collaboration. The price? $18 to $80. Is this a one-off collaboration? Well, let’s hope not and we hope that this first collaboration will be a huge success so that we can see many more in the future. Who better than Pantone can give you the exact favorite color that you want, right? Laila & Amalia editors of www.fashionesedaily.com Style & Beauty with Attitude

Rupa Belanja, Rupa Kota In a narrow sense, design is closely linked with consumption (objects), and therefore, with lifestyle. The production of modern consumer goods requires design that combines two contrasting elements: uniformity for mass production and a unique identity. In cities, the process of production and consumption experience high intensity, the amount of things available is always maintained with a high levels of variety. Cities have become very competitive locations, frenzied in both the amount and the variety of “personalities” of objects consumed—a way of being busy that not only rules public spaces, but also begins to creep into private spaces through media and information technology. How are the arts practiced in such conditions? Can art practices still be useful in providing inspiration? Curator: Marco Kusumawijaya Artists: Indieguerillas, Irwan Ahmett, Wiyoga Muhardanto January 14-31, 2012 Galeri Salihara, Jl. Salihara 16, Pasar Minggu, Jakarta Selatan
“Spleen” is a kaleidoscope of pictures, songs and miniatures, inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s collection of poems in prose “Le Spleen de Paris”, which was published posthumously in 1869. Mankind on the threshold to modernity is described in the scenes played out between a thirst for life and longing for death, between a romantic search for infinity and a brutal triviality. The performers are on the stage with puppets and musical instruments, Baudelaire’s texts are spoken by children and recorded on tape. Monday, January 23, 2012 – 20.00 WIB. Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, Jl. Gedung Kesenian 1, Jakarta Pusat. women want to look beautiful. But what exactly is the meaning of beauty? Through the perspective of contemporary artists, beauty is not just related to women’s bodies here but also the wider question of aesthetic beauty that is constantly interpreted by different cultures on this earth and also through the use of goods, such as cosmetic bags. ‘Beauty Case,’ an art exhibition, features the work of 20 contemporary Indonesian artists. The cosmetic box is believed to have an intimate relationship with women and the arrival of those beauty cases also marked an era where women could look beautiful anywhere, a kind of beauty independence. The artists are those who are directly involved and close to the world of fashion and lifestyle: Eko Bintang, Keke Tumbuan, Bunga Jeruk Permata Pekerti, Davy Linggar, and Dita Gambiro. The works look very contemporary, critical, also unique. The artwork of Difa Gambiro entitled ‘Guilty Pleasure: Pain Passes, Beauty Arises’ which uses wax cloth that still contains fine hairs which is then arranged into writing out ‘Pain Passes, Beauty Arises’. Bunga Jeruk Permata Pekerti’s artwork features a beautiful female statue titled ‘So Young, So Good’.
The curator of this exhibition, Rifky Effendi, revealed the artists had inherited the spirit of avant-guardism against the current dominant culture that refuses the public opinion of “beautiful”. Rejection is done by a cynical, critical, and sarcasm, but is intriguing and thrilling. “Looking at the artist’s point of view about the meaning of beautiful. Beauty is cliché, just like love. Beauty can also bring problems, that’s their concern.” December 14, 2011 – January 8, 2012 Jakarta Art District, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town, East Mall – Lower Ground, Jl. MH Thamrin no. 1, Jakarta Pusat

Eko Bintang showcased ‘Beauty is the Beast,’ in the form of a beautiful woman surrounded by so many men until some of them fall, which visualizes that the obsession with beauty itself can be very horrible. The struggle can be pretty grim, so that inner beauty is very important. Beauty itself does not always mean good, but goodness always means beauty.

he word that comes to mind when viewing “Never Odd or Even,” the artwork of Susan Olij, is obviously ‘abstract’. The paintings made by Olij look very beautiful, we will never know the definitive results when ink is scraped on paper, the texture of the paper will always carry the ink flow all over the paper, mixing two colors on paper will always bring us a new and exciting results to be seen.

Susan Olij is an Indonesia-born artist who works and is settled in Singapore. She left her career in the fashion industry in 2005 to become an artist and all her art education was abroad. It was both a natural and seamless transition and while she no longer works in fashion, Susan’s experiences have had an indelible impact on her artwork. Drawing from the fashion world, Susan uses Chinese ink and batik dye on watercolour and rice paper to create abstract images which can also be used as cloth patterns for an eye-catching dress. The results obtained when the ink is poured on a paper can be seen on her works.

The interesting thing is the story behind this cleverly titled in palindrome exhibition, which is derived from two cultural backgrounds which she has, namely Chinese culture in Indonesia from her mother, and also a blend of Western influences on art and fashion from her father. Her patterns have a subtle elegance and a calming sense of peace, and their main strength is their simplicity. She primarily uses just two colors, natural brown and indigo.

W
Resort and Spa
Location
Nestled in Seminyak, the W is a mere stone throws away from all the best shops, restaurants, and nightclubs in the area. The resort is right in front of the beach giving guests a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean which yields spectacular sunsets.
Look
www.beatmag.com
The W immediately grabs your attention with its cutting edge design features; the wet deck (pool) area is a multilevel body of water in an irregular shape which was influenced by rice terraces. The rooms have sliding panels that can alter the rooms based on the concept of conceal and reveal. The colors were inspired by Balinese temples and the bed covers resemble a lotus pond.
Atmosphere
Walking into the W, you can’t help but notice a very young and dare I say, “hip,” aura surrounding the place. The design is just so well thought out with clever little touches everywhere. Indeed, the folks who create the place paid very close
attention to detail with humorous little bits thrown in.
Features
Each room at the W comes with an LED flat screen with audio and video inputs so that you can throw in any media you like. The Bose sound system can be turned all the way up because each room is individually soundproofed. They also have an excellent line of toiletries under the “Bliss” name. When you factor in four bars, two restaurants, a gym, and a spa, the W is a great place to party or relax.

Rooms start at USD 300++

Dust off your kicks and bring out those silks because January comes with a very Kung-Fuesque twist. Yes. This year’s USB (Urban Sunset Breeze) celebrates the Chinese New Year in true ‘Gong Xi’ fashion. Rooftop Dine & Lounge is responsible for this little soiree and aims to bring the Chinatown feel to Bali with RnB packed Mandarin beats, live performance by DJ Renny, flair dancers and skilled bartenders. Come and enjoy this festive time from 5pm to 10pm on the Rooftop of the 101 Legian.
Roberto and Elena were two of the five winners of the Transformation Vol 1 Cocoon CD, complied and mixed by DJ Tony Montana in a competition in the last edition of TB. Here they are pictured in the beat office picking up their grooved out prize.
Tigers Born in Bali Zoo It’s a real shame that many kind of tigers are almost extinct in their natural areas because of habitat loss. But it’s totally different in Bali Zoo. Tiger populations there keep growing with an additional 2-3 cute tiger cubs born almost every year. Two months ago, tiger couples Kartini and Buntung had two cubs that are the sixth births from their coupling. The new cubs are both males named Joy and Roy. With the development of the tiger family that keeps growing, Bali Zoo is currently in a project of the cage development to Kartini and Buntung’s larger family that now consists of 12 members. Those two additional tigers were a nice gift for Bali Zoo which just celebrated its 9th anniversary.

Daniel’s Right in the heart of the island’s food scene, Daniel’s offers a fresh, cheerful take on traditional French cuisine.

Jl. Laksmana 7 Kerobokan-Bali Tel : +62 361 734 533 lentrecotebali@yahoo.com
Daniel’s presents an airy contemporary take on a traditional brasserie. There are mirrors, brass railings and long dark leather sofas, but the feel is fresh and light, with high ceilings and a modern color scheme. Black and white photos adorn the walls, and when we arrive, some nice jazzy tunes set the mood up just right for the surprisingly busy Tuesday night crowd.
on tender pastry, filled with cold and creamy vanilla ice cream, making for quite a finish. My friends go for a Crème Brulee (45k), which is perfectly caramelized, with cool smooth custard underneath and a refreshingly creamy Lemon Tart with Strawberry Coulis (35k). We round things out with some shots of sambuca, with coffee beans thrown in for good measure.

lthough the Bali of today boasts almost any sort of food you could want, French cuisine is sadly underrepresented. Perhaps people are worried that a fine French restaurant might be too stuffy, too formal, or too expensive. Daniel’s, a recent addition to the island’s bustling “Eat Street” on Jalan Oberoi, is none of those things. It is, however, firmly French and absolutely delicious.
Establishing a place on Oberoi is no mean feat for a new restaurant, but Daniel’s more than delivers the goods, and judging by the satisfied looks on the faces of the packed crowd, we weren’t the only ones impressed. A definite winner. [Kalmar]
Our mains arrive hot from the grill. The restaurant’s signature entrecote rib eye steak (200gr/90k, 400gr/190k) is cooked to perfection, charbroiled but buttery, with some crispy fries and a beautiful creamy mustard sauce. The Chef’s Burger (90k) turns out to be one of the best things on the menu, made from thick minced Australian steak, perfectly balanced with crisp lettuce and sauce on a fresh bun. Daniel’s also offers Spare Ribs (95k), which are tender and juicy in a smoky barbecue sauce, and grilled Chicken Skewers with Tarragon (100gr/50k, 200gr/100k). Although I’m stuffed, I can’t pass up a plate of Profiterolles au Chocolat (45k) for dessert. Rich, thick, cocoa-y chocolate sauce is layered
www.beatmag.com
The resto’s original focus was on a prix fixe set menu as the only option. Since then, plenty of other dishes have been added, allowing diners to mix and match. After a quick drink at the well-stocked bar, we move into a few appetizers. A tomato tart is unassuming enough on the menu, but pretty amazing in reality, with fluffy pastry and a creamy basil emulsion that gives it just the right amount of, well, tartness. The Chicken Liver Mousse (40k) is creamy and rich, perfectly balanced, served with nice sour pickles and crisp baguette slices, while the Vol au Vent Escargot (45k) is a bit of a different take on the traditional dish, with the famously delicious garlic butter sauce matched up perfectly with some light pastry. We wash things down with glasses of red wine and are satisfied and ready for more.

o many events were held in the last days of the year, however one of the special ones was Jerome Isma-ae’s performance at The Stones. Even though it was raining, many party heads, mostly tourists from Jakarta, still made it to the show. Jerome played at 1am and people filled the dance floor. Some girls even let loose some funky moves on top of the speaker boxes. Very cool.

int’s Grand Opening featuring Christian Smith was so packed. There was a massive line of people waiting to get in and inside it was a sea of humanity. The night began with DJ Mamsa dropping his best, then after 1am Christian Smith took over the decks. He got into the groove quickly remixing some old classic tunes and bringing in the new. The full house really got into the music all night long.
