I reckon the wet and torrential weather has brought some much needed cool to the city of Jakarta. Ah yes, seems like there is a lively glow amongst the people and the city feels rather refreshed. It might be the momentum of the New Year’s buzz, where people seem to recharge and refuel themselves with positives. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts. This week a team from the big durian set out to compete in the World Schools Debating championships in Cape Town, SA and the students from UI (University of Indonesia) are competing at a choir festival in Hungary. All this is a testament of the exposure this city is getting and the efforts it is making to promote the archipelago. For you who love to give back to the community get ready for “Lovedonation” coming up soon. This is the biggest blood donor event in Indonesia, another one of those powerful and infectious community based movements you will see in the coming days. India Arie, the beautiful songstress, once said ‘the only constant thing in life is change’. The Beat is proud to have been part and to continue to taking part in the city’s positive changes, we party even when there’s a hundred reasons not to. Why? Because music, life and love are all we need and we love sharing it with you. Enjoy your next two weeks in the city and don’t forget it’s time for The Beat Sunday Sunset Party and BBQ next weekend at Liquid Exchange or Lex, as it is commonly known. See you there, everybody is welcome. Have a good read of this edition of The Beat Jakarta and send us any comments or suggestions to editor@beatmag. com. We’ll catch you around the traps.

Kali ini giliran Mahesa Utara, DJ yang baru saja dinobatkan sebagi Rookie Of The Year dalam ajang Paranoia Awards 2011. Millenium presented another high quality local DJ, Mahesa Utara, who had just won the Rookie Of The Year at the Paranoia Awards last month. By about midnight the crowd began to twitch as MC Che Che introduced the main act and Mahesa got down to playing some classic dutch and techno music. This stuff normally goes down and was a treat to be with the gang at Millenium. Tonight, no excpetion.

Illigals Club held an event that presented high quality DJs from DJ Management. DJ Winky and company played their tunes from house, electro, dutch, breaks, all the way until progressive. There was something unique that night at Illigals because not all of the main room was being used for the event, only from the door until the center of the room, which helped to create a more intimate atmosphere with the crowd. Cool idea!

Keren!

I AM a MOVIE LEGEND
www.beatmag.com
Rico Bradley, you’re a movie buff and a creative consultant. Tell us a bit more?
I love movies man. I mean, I think I was born in the cinema somewhere when I came out of my mother’s womb. My earliest movie memory was watching the Omega Man (that film was later remade into I Am Legend). My first cinema experience was Superman and after that I just fell in love with the infinite possibilities that are in movies. There are no bad movies or boring movies, for each film represents the point of view of the director and writer. Film is art, and it’s a creative way of representing stories that are told over and over again that fascinates me. Being a creative consultant is like being Mcgyver, I believe there are no problems that can’t be solved without using a little elbow grease, innovative thinking, and some charisma. We are in a world where the next big thing is social commerce, a cheaper direct approach to selling or promoting through the community. Community is the next big thing, people believe and support their communities. Being creative also means being able to produce something out of nothing when you must. What I do is provide solutions in advertising or promotions that are probably out of the box, yet it works. Cause you got to have passion to be creative. One last thing, being creative is to be like water (Bruce Lee quote), adaptable and flexible. To sell creativity you got to back it up with data.
What are your ties to the entertainment industry in Indonesia/Jakarta?
Well, I have been in the business since I was 19 years old, working for a company called Broadcast Design Indonesia, where I studied
f e a t u r e

On a scale of 1 to 10, how entertaining is this city? And why?
Damn it boy, this is the most entertaining city in the world, well next to Vegas and Bali (not a city, I know). I love Jakarta, its full of life, full of colours and inspirations and challenges. And as a creative person, I love challenges. Cause challenges inspire creative solutions. But I wish the different elite groups would relax and party together, so there be no rivalry... just big parties... and loosen up the restriction on clothes, I want to see women enjoy the freedom of their sensuality. Yeah women need to be more aggressive in Jakarta.
A day in the life of a creative consultant?
I wake up. Work out. Listen to some geeky podcast. Shower, breakfast while on the way to the office. I watch some TV series or movies. Meet people, talk to my business partner, who is also amazingly creative... Read books and surf the web, meet my clients see whether my company (Happyfriends Production) can help them. Meet amazingly beautiful and talented
women, (yes all of you Indonesian women are!) and my assistant will be ready with pen and paper just in case a genius idea pops up and we catch some lightning in a bottle!
5 creative ways to reinvent oneself? 1. Working out always brings positivity in you... endorphine and adrenaline.
2. Never try, always do... even when you fail,
you learn (janganjaim). 3. Clothes doth maketh the man. Dress to impress even casually. 4. Do not limit your own resources, trust me, you are equipped to do the impossible . 5. Be like water, adaptive and flexible. Bonus: always learn to laugh at yourself... its okay.
What are some of the projects you are workin on right now? Happyfriends Production is my baby, I am also endorsing Shop Boulangerie, the first organic bakery in Jakarta. Social commerce is gonna be the next big advertising ploy... Youtube, Twitter and Facebook are changing the game we got to adapt. A movie is in mind and a few television programs and some FTV.
How do we reach you for that creative advice?
You can reach me by railway, you can reach me by trailway. You can reach me on an airplane, you can reach me with your mind. But for sure please email me at ricobradley@ happyfriends.co.id or call my office (021) 2930 3737.
Describe yourself in one word. Blessed.

and learned from Richard Buntario and Rizal Mantovani, I worked with them on the 1995 MTV Asian Music Video of the Year winner Denada’s “Sambutlah”. I continued behind the scenes with KLA Project, Dewa 19, 9 Model, Gigi. Then as I focused on acting commercially, I learned from Bo Krabbe as he used to employ me a lot in his commercials. I also learned from Gary Hayes and followed the adventures of Om Tino Sarangelo. I also am a fan and friend of Rumah di Seribu Ombak writer Erwin Arnada, a very inspirational man, and I support the stand up comedy movement in Indonesia. I guess in short I have been around.

Which is the worst: (a) People rushing into a lift so that you can’t get out; (b) drivers not letting you in from a side road to a traffic queue; (c) people walking extremely slowly, six abreast, along a shopping mall walkway so you can’t get past?
High-pressure living in large urban centers seems to bring out the worst in us. Is there any way we can avoid it?
The answer is they’re all as bad as each other and probably occur with equal frequency. What’s worse, we’re probably all guilty of committing one or more of these lapses in politeness from time to time, whether or not we’re consciously aware of it. Living in a big city like Jakarta, everyone seems to be in a hurry to get somewhere, whether it’s drivers competing for the same stretch of increasingly precious road space or passengers jostling with each other to board a Transjakarta busway vehicle. Time, as they say, is money, and nowhere is this more noticeable than in places where large numbers of people find themselves in tight proximity to each other.

available at post offices. The present-day equivalent is people subtlely trying to sneak in front of you in the queue at the airport checkin desk. Luckily, queueing culture has now become well established, and it’s noticeable that younger people are not often guilty of any of the above offences. What’s really annoying, though, is that centralised queueing, especially at banks, is rarely used so you’re left, for example, with guessing which of four queues will move the fastest.
As for asking for information about an item before buying it in a busy shop, don’t even think about it, just buy it quickly and move on ... In Jakarta, one of the most annoying examples of rudeness used to occur at post offices where some people, seemingly unaware that others were already ahead of them patiently waiting, would push their way to the desk, demanding they be served immediately. Only the more self-confident counter clerks would have the courage to ask them to line up. These days it doesn’t seem to happen so much but that may be because, in the internet age, fewer people find the need to use the services
Visit smaller cities or more rural locations and you’ll notice just how more polite and friendly everyone seems to be. That is equally as true in the West as it is here. The slower pace of life seems to have a calming effect on everyone, and there’s a lot to be said for the beneficial impact of spending time in such places whenever possible – “chilling out,” in modern parlance. Back in “the smoke”, at restaurants or cafes local people sometimes complain that expatriates seem to be waited on more conscientiously by service staff, as if they were motivated by a belief that such people somehow “deserved” it. Conversely, if a bule (Caucasian) man takes his Indonesian wife or girlfriend out, the couple may well be subject to humiliating stares and the woman made to feel that somehow she’s a second-class citizen. But let’s not go there, that could be the subject of another article in its own right ... (Jim Read)

Just look at the behavior of urbanites in Singapore or Hong Kong: Woe betide anyone who gets in the way of office workers in Orchard or Central on the dot of midday when a human juggernaut makes it way to a variety of dining venues, only to return some 45 minutes later for the workers concerned to be back at their desks before lunch hour is over.
Inevitably, Murphy’s Law comes into play and you end up in the slowest-moving queue, wondering whether it’s worth the risk of joining the tail end of another one that seems to be moving faster...

Roman Foot Soldiers WATERFRONT

__________________________________________

injitos Records, an established Indonesian record label, has signed a new band, the Roman Foot Soldiers.
Around a month ago this pop/electronic collective under Sinjitos Records released a videoclip for “Waterfront”, the main single of their free download EP, Kitsilano. The video clip is directed by a collaborative duo of Nicoline Patricia Malian and Anindita Saryuf, both are known as key people in fashion. Anindita’s husband, Joseph Saryuf, acted as the producer of the song. The Roman Foot Soldiers themselves actually came together in 2005 as six Indonesian university students while they studied in Vancouver, Canada. They became more confident doing their act after they got into the big three of University of British Columbia’s Battle of the Bands. In summer 2010, after finishing college, they all decided to go back to Indonesia and worked together with Sinjitos Records in Jakarta.

Rainy Days Can
Still Be Fun!
We know rainy days can be such a downer. No need to wallow in boredom in this weather and just pout inside watching the rain pour. You could still have fun with some suggestions from TBJ. (Dini Siregar)
1. Prepare your own gourmet meal
www.beatmag.com
Feel like getting creative while stuck indoors? Try looking up a fancy recipe and preparing it yourself. Head to the nearest market for some ingredients shopping. Or if the fancy recipe also requires fancy ingredients, go to a gourmet lifestyle supermarket such as Kemchicks or Ranch 99 Market.
Kemchicks, located at Jalan Kemang Raya No. 3-5, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta Selatan. Ranch 99 Market, located at The Promenade, Jalan Warung Buncit No. 98, Pejaten Barat.
2.Relax at the spa Rainy days are the perfect excuse to take some time and relax. Why not treat yourself to a day of comfort at a spa? Rejuvenate your skin with a totok aura (a method of skin treatment) for your face and body at Dian Kenanga Totok Aura. Or ask for a body scrub and enjoy the blissful pampering they provide.

Dian Kenanga, located at Jalan Raya Pejaten Barat No. 38, Jakarta Selatan.
3. Enjoy a leisurely brunch This concept of meal outside the three regular meals is now very in fashionable in Jakarta. Nothing says “comfort” like a tasty brunch. Head to Koi Café and Gallery for their renowned Eggs Benedict, or the Waffle Liege with Berries (a secret recipe from the Belgian chef’s grandmother). Or just go with a classic Indonesian dish, such as the Chicken Curry Porridge.
Koi Café and Gallery, located at Saberro House, Jalan Kemang Raya No. 10A, Jakarta Selatan.
4. Curl up with a book
Aksara, located at Pacific Place Level 4 SCBD, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman Kavling 52-53, Jakarta Selatan. Other things you can do besides moping around because of the rain: Go bowling at Spincity Bowling Alley, located at eX Entertainment X’nter 1st floor, Jalan M.H. Thamrin Kavling 28-30, Jakarta Pusat. Shoot some pool at Q Billiard, located at Senayan City, Crystal Lagoon Area B2 floor, Jalan Asia Afrika 19, Jakarta Pusat.

Escape the bad weather within the pages of a good book. There are a number of cozy bookstores in Jakarta, along with comfy chairs to take a seat and ignore the weather. One of those bookstores is Aksara, the one paired with a brunch eatery called Canteen to be precise. It offers the ideal place to curl up with an enticing read.

ince last October, the German embassy in Indonesia has been busy working and launching their biggest project ever in Indonesia called JERIN. The name is derived from the abbreviation of Germany and Indonesia is an interactive project that is open for all musicians. The JERIN project was initiated in an amazing gala concert last October, where 150 musicians from Germany, Indonesia and Thailand participated and was lead by one of the most renowned conductors in the world, Gudni Emilsson.
This talented pianist has won a great number of awards in international piano competitions including in Peking and Paris. Oliver Kern is also known as the first German pianist ever to win the Beethoven Award prize in Vienna in 2001. He’s much appreciated for his performances of Beethoven and Brahms music. The critics recognize his merit of possessing a technical virtuosity that isn’t an end to itself but it is oriented to a thorough research of timbre and expression. So far, his profound interpretations have led him to numerous important festivals in America, Asia and Europe. Kern will present his interpretations of classical music to audiences in Jakarta, Solo and Surabaya. The works of Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven are especially dear to him. He is looking forward to the duet performance with the Indonesian violinist Iskandar Widjaja-Hadar. Their collaboration will present pieces for violin accompanied by piano, solo pieces for violin and solo pieces for piano.
Iskandar Widjaja-Hadar, who was born in Berlin in 1986 is also not a new comer to our classical music scene. We know him as the nephew of famous conductor Noorman Widjaja from Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra and recently on a TV commercial for a coffee product. Iskandar has been playing the violin since he was four years old. He then continued to study at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin at the age of 11 and later at Berlin University of the Arts. This handsome looking violin player has also won numerous international awards and performed with many great orchestras such as Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, Bonn Classical Philharmonic, Berlin Symphony Orchestra and Jakarta Symphony Orchestra. It’s definitely going to be a great quality concert for sure and oh, admission is free. Get your invitation now at the Goethe Institute.
Jerin Presents Oliver Kern feat Iskandar Widjaja - Hadar 26 January 2012 starting from 20.00 onwards Gedung Kesenian Jakarta For more information: Goethe Institute 021235 50 208 ext 147/157

The décor is very much that of a typical Italian bistro. Stylish neutral tones accentuated by soft sunlight from the big front window and special ambient lighting in the evening. The walls are adorned with classic Italian posters and paintings, but some quirky touches here and there add a more casual ambiance; a vintage tennis racket hanging by the mirror, a clarinet in its case nearby, an old telephone by the wall, they all make nice accents to the room.

in Yoga was founded by an American practitioner of yoga and martial arts, Paulie Zink. He created Yin Yoga as a synthesis combining Indian Hatha Yoga and some elements of Chinese Taoist traditions with yoga postures and variations, movements, vocalizations, visualization techniques, and insights that Zink developed himself. Tao Yin, Qigong, Kung Fu, inner alchemy, philosophy, and mysticism are the Taoist traditions that are involved in Yin Yoga. Although Paulie Zink founded this particular branch of yoga, there have been a few major practitioners. Sarah Powers and Paul Grilley, (Zink’s students), who have been accredited to introducing Yin Yoga to the greater community. Sebastian Pucelle was one of the many students of Sarah Powers and attended
Powers’ workshops in London. Besides that, he has been studying yoga internationally in Europe and Asia since 1995. He studied Hatha Yoga in India, and also attended a hundred hour Teacher Training Course (TTC) in Yin Yoga in Singapore, a two hundred hour TTC at an ashram in Austria. And lately another two hundred hour TTC at Recognized Yoga Alliance at the School of Santhi in India. That combined with several other achievements in yoga and martial arts have enhanced his own teachings. Based on Pucelle’s many experiences in the world of yoga, he will hold the first two-day Yin Yoga workshop in Jakarta this January. The workshops are divided into several activities on different dates. The one in January will talk about the foundation of Yin Yoga and the activity will continue from March to May, learning how to practice Yin Yoga in healing ourselves, and to explore meditation, and other related teachings. Fear the Beast, the Demon, or the drug Lord?
By: @JohanJT
Beasts and vampires from the underworld, an invisible hostile demon, or simply some brutal mobster bosses, each of you might find one or maybe all of them, which is something you never want to encounter in life. Face the fear or forever be afraid they say. Fear is better overcome when there’s some cool action, special effects and camera work. Let’s hit www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!
Underworld: Awakening
Action, Fantasy. Directors: Måns Mårlind, Björn Stein. Writers: Len Wiseman, Jon Hlavin, Allison Burnett. Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, India Eisley, Theo James.
The opening scene in its official trailer shows Selene (Kate Beckinsale) falling off the top of a skyscraper and landing on her feet like a cat definitely got your attention, right? After the third film, which was a prequel proved quite disappointing to fans, Underworld is bringing you back that sexy vampire warrioress and a bunch of werewolves battling in all-out war against human forces. With all the underworldly weapons and lycan transformation brought to you in 3D special effects, this installment to the series franchise is much anticipated. All you wanted to know from previous films’ silver linings will be answered and will make sense to you. So get prepared for those fangs, beastly claws and guns popping out from cinema screen!
Paranormal Activity 3 Horror, Mystery. Directors: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman. Writer: Christopher Landon. Cast: Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown and Christopher Nicholas Smith, Lauren Bittner.
Still curious about the reason why Katie and Kristi are haunted in the first place? In this sequel, you’ll be shown a bunch of Betamax videos recorded in 1988 during these sisters’ childhood when younger Kristi befriended an invisible demonic entity who resides in their home. The secret to what is that entity and why it is following them will be answered. Sticking with its handycam-shot style, Paranormal Activity 3 will serve you more creative and unpredictable camera angles of which you’d close your eyes at every turn, more hostile and sudden “pranks” by the invisible “it”. Don’t be shy to scream and swear, because most people in the cinema will!
Contraband Action, Crime, Drama. Director: Baltasar Kormákur. Writer: Aaron Guzikowski. Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Lukas Haas. To protect his brother-in-law from a brutal drug lord, a former legendary smuggler, Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg), heads to Panama with his newly assembled crew to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills. He then must go through a world of merciless crime lords, cops and hit men before they target his wife and son. Adapted from the original script of “ReykjavikRotterdam” (Iceland, 2008), the producer turns himself as the director for this Hollywood version. You might find it the gritty, solid, workmanlike action flick with the exotic scenes of Latin America really dramatic. Enjoy the tense action with your bucket of popcorn!

High Top Sneakers:
A Trend in 2012?
s t y l e

Wondering why Isabel Marant’s high top sneakers became so popular on the street, I Googled for more details. Isabel Marant has two types of this high top sneaker, Bekket and Willow. It turned out that the sneakers have hidden wedge heels in them! Isabel Marant Bekket high top sneakers have approximately five centimeters or two inch hidden wedged heels while Willow’s measures about seven centimeters or 3.5 inches. Unlike what I imagined before if I wore these sneakers, I think Isabel Marant high top sneakers won’t make me look short since the hidden heels are supposed to give extra height.
So is it the hidden heels that bring the sneaker to the next level? It could be. And I guess its unique design adds another plus points with the contrasting suede and leather details, thick rubber soles and padded ankles. With no surprise, several famous figures were also spotted wearing these high top sneakers. Alicia Keys wore them to watch a game with her family, Beyonce danced with them on her “Love On Top” video, Anne Hathaway wore them on her way to Catwoman training, while the models Anabela Belikova and Miranda Kerr walked down the street with those same fabulous sneakers. very morning before I leave the house, I like to pick my shoes alternately. One day I wear my flat shoes, sometimes I wear wedges, I wear high heels to go for an event and I also wear my sneakers whenever I want. I like wearing several styles of shoes. However, I realize my legs are not that long and slender, that’s why I never bought shoes which reach my ankles such as ankle boots or high top sneakers. So when I spotted Isabel Marant high top sneakers on some photos of Elle’s street style trend, I applauded how those ladies dare to wear such sneakers. If I were a person who wears this kind of sneakers, my legs would look way shorter, especially because of the padded detail at the front.
Five Things You Need to Know About Scrubbing
Talking about facial scrub, do you think you’ve been scrubbing the right way? Here’s some basic information that you want to know about scrubbing. 1. Use facial scrub once to twice a week. Using it too often will not add any benefit to your skin, it will only irritate and ruin the texture of your skin. Scrubbing once a week will be enough to help lift dead skin cells build up and keeping your skin smooth and glowing. 2. Don’t use facial scrub with a coarse texture. Our facial skin is much thinner and finer in texture compared to any other skin in our body. Therefore, a mild form scrub should suffice in helping to lift the dead skin cells built up in the surface of our skin. Therefore, you should also avoid facial scrubs that feel rough on the skin; you would be in danger of lacerating your skin.
www.beatmag.com
3. Don’t massage the scrub too hard. As I mentioned above, you don’t want to lacerate your skin and create scratches on it. Soft massaging in a circular motion should be enough to allow the scrub to do its work. Some of the dirt that you want to cleanse will not be able to be reached by the grit on the facial scrub no matter how hard you massage them. You will need chemical exfoliator such as AHA or BHA that will help dead skin cells part from your skin’s surface. 4. Good facial scrub doesn’t have to be expensive. They can be made out of natural ingredients that contain many benefits for your skin, for instance oatmeal, fruit pulp or sugar. 5. Avoid the eye area when scrubbing. Your eye area is even more sensitive and thinner than your face. So, avoid using any exfoliation product in this area at all cost or you will only shed unnecessary good layers of skin.
Amalia - editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude
Facial scrub is one of the common items that people use as an exfoliator. Although exfoliations are recommended to be done at least once a week, and using a scrub is one of the products by which exfoliation can be done, but there’s more than just scrubbing to it

An art exhibition showcasing a superb painting and digital printing collection made by the hands of the young and talented Sarita Ibnoe and Yugie Kartaatmaja. Working as a graphic designer and illustrator during the day, Sarita Ibnoe paints or experiments at night/early morning to balance things out between her work and passion or just to make her hectic surroundings blurred, relaxed, and basically to keep her hair on her head. People usually said Yugie Kartaatmaja was so random about his work. He refers to his talent as ‘art based fluxus’ and found himself comfortable in any medium of art such as drawing, ceramics, digital print, mixed media, video art, etc. Now he is currently doing an experiment in digital print and ceramics to combine them in any possible form. The word “life imitating art” is his main idea because everything he knows about art is wrong. February 4, 2012 Treehouse Kemang, Jl. Kemang 1 no. 72, Jakarta Selatan

esign is very closely linked with the consumption of objects and, through it, lifestyle which some say is the layer of civilization that is identified by its pattern of consumption. In short, we believed that “you are what you consume.” Production of consumer goods in modern industrial design needs to reconcile two things: uniformity to allow mass production, and a unique identity. Branding falls within the middle ground. While in the city, the production and consumption process experiences a dramatic industrial intensity: the range of goods are always diverse and excessive. Therefore, there must always be a model or a series of new products that will be eagerly awaited, that introduces something new but possesses the same “personality” of the older series and brand. How can art survive in this sense? Curator Marco Kusumawijaya invites Wiyoga “Yoga” Muhardanto (Bandung), Irwan “Iwang” Ahmett (Jakarta) and Indieguerillas (Dyatmiko “Miko” Bawono and Santi Ariestyowanti, Yogyakarta) to take a stand on this consumption matter in the context of the city space.
Indiguerillas, an art duo from Yogyakarta, presented their perspective on the growth of urban lifestyle in various cities in Indonesia. Their artwork, titled “Urban Jungle Warfare 2”, showed an installation of some three-dimensional objects that symbolized a civilization where shopping malls and government establishments were the temples for citizens doing their ‘rituals’. Meanwhile, Wiyoga Muhardanto from Bandung, showcased a “Short Term Plan Expo”, that put Bandung as the central focus of his artwork. He put imaginary exhibition pieces offering absurd products and services to satirize the current situation in Bandung.
The curator of the exhibition simply determined the theme of the exhibition and the artists involved were free to create the works in any form they desired. They all have a different approach to the subject, showcasing different objects, different scales and displays. They also live in different cities where urbanization and consumption levels are varied. They are the generation that is familiar with information technology and media and grow in an environment of “modern markets”. Their track record also shows concern on the issues above. The objective is to think by using their works as a critical mirror. Photo by Komunitas Salihara

To Game & To Challenge A New T Public
www.beatmag.com
o start 2012, Jakarta Biennale has taken a turn at the malls. Taking over a location at Central Park Mall in Jl S. Parman, West Jakarta, Jakarta Biennale invited 33 local and international artists with works responding to the theme of “Game, Leisure, & Gadget Victim”. Artists such as Entang Wiharso, Taufik Monyong, Dunadi, Sam Saptoto, I Nyoman Agus Wijaya were just a few of the many artists participating in the show. Jakarta Biennale # 14.2011 raised the issue that Jakarta is nothing but a super-sized trash bin for various “gadgets” and the world’s entertainment industry. It appears that Jakartans have become an easy target for the marketing trials of American and Chinese products of various goods, both genuine and fake and this exhibition was trying to express this concept.
At the main lobby, visitors were presented with a giant silver statue of a baby. Dunadi, the artist, depicts the baby wrapped with placenta, but his attention is distracted by a portable game console. The work, entitled “Baby Game is a reflection of the urban children who can not escape from the world of gaming. Entang Wiharso made a satirical observation on donation boxes which consisted of five boxes: Art Museum, War, Humanity, Terrorism, and Heaven, displayed on a table. In the box there was also a video that described their respective titles. Entang also invited visitors to participate filling out a form where they can explain the reason why they have chosen one of the donation boxes over the others.
An artist from Yogyakarta, Donna Prawita Arisoeta, made a parody of luxury brands. Paper bags labelled with brands like Hermes, DKNY, Zara, Lacoste, Guess, Chanel, and many others were arranged together. The interesting part about this work was in the materials, where the bags when viewed from afar looked like they were made from paper, but actually they were made from ceramic. In addition, the composition of branded paper bags were placed near the stores that sell the famous brands. This is the second public exhibition of Jakarta Biennale to introduce contemporary art to the people and the first time it had been held in West Jakarta. This Jakarta Biennale # 14 took a bold step into a new frontier where visitors were not familiar with contemporary arts. Hats off.

Walking out onto the breezy rooftop, it’s clear that a venue such as this is unique for Kuta, with most of the action happening down at street level at most eateries in town. Up here though, it’s a different atmosphere, and with the bustle left far below it’s easy to slide into relax mode. A cocktail or two also never hurts when faced with comfy chillout sofas, and so my buddy and I order up a couple of the bartender’s recommendations before getting stuck into the menu; namely a kiwi lush (78k++) and a limoncello martini (75k++). First up to start us off we go for a tom yum talay soup (35k++) and a plate of the amazingly tender octopus spicy rings (45k++) – a nice change to the standard calamari rings found everywhere else. Feeling particularly hungry we also split a serving of the fantastic fusion prawn tempura (95k++) which is perfect for sharing. For the mains it a hard choice, but eventually after much deliberating we get stuck into a plate of pan fried barramundi (115k++) and the excellent imported 101 duck (90k++). Both excellent examples of beautifully presented, crowd pleasing fare that is consistent with everything else on the rooftop menu. A black forest cake (45k++) and a stack of the smoothie pancakes (40k++) round things off nicely, although be warned, the pancakes should not be tackled alone! Helping to wash down the sweet treats a couple more cocktails (dirty bit and senior playboy – both 75k++) finish off the afternoon on a high note. Looking to escape the Kuta madness and kick back with some scrumptious nosh or a tasty tipple in hand? Look no further than the 101 Rooftop. Dan Ashcroft

ising up out of the busy streets of Kuta, the five-story 101 Legian has a rather large ace up its sleeve, with a sleek rooftop lounge that gives stunning views across south Bali and beyond. It’s not just the views that are attracting people into the stylish premises though; open from 7am – 1am the rooftop serves up breakfast lunch and dinner, with a fully laden menu of contemporary cuisine to tempt visitors at all hours of the day. Whether it be chilling out at sunset with friends, a romantic evening meal or a few pre-club drinks, the rooftop suits all tastes and won’t break the bank.

Glynn Tandy The Beat chats with the local and international resident DJs and musicians entertaining the masses of the island...
Let’s start with basics, tell us something about yourself. I grew up in Blackpool, England, and spent my early years frequently in the party scene of the northwest of England in clubs like the Hacienda, Back to Basics and Cream where my love for house music grew but I left the UK when I was 19 and moved to Spain then Australia and have been living back and forth from KL, Malaysia to Bali for the last 14 years. You aren’t only a DJ, you produce as well. What are you currently putting together? Yeah, I started off DJing at an early age in UK and on the production side of things I have been making tracks for the last five to six years so that came after… I have just set my studio back up in Bali so I have a few new projects I’m working on and will be working with some local vocalists and musicians on the island as there is some great talent here. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen at a club? Seen many a crazy thing in clubs and probably best kept quiet... Ha ha. But I would say some of the most bizarre things would happen in Ibiza as pretty much anything goes over there. Top five favorite tracks of all time? Wow this is a tough one and there have been many times this question has come up and I still find it hard to pick five, but here are five that come to mind. 1. Where Love Lives - Alison Limerick 2. Vodoo Ray - Guy Called Gerald 3. Unfinished Symphony - Massive Attack 4. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division 5. Fool’s Gold - The Stone Roses Top three favorite movies of all time? 1. Breakdance 2. Scarface 3. Debbie does Dallas :-)
It’s raining, you’re stuck in traffic. Exhaust fumes intermittently contaminate the air surrounding you, but you have your ipod and earphones. What do you play? Erm...! “It’s a Beautiful Day” by U2... Ha

What would you kill for? My mum’s Sunday roast dinner!! You can take the boy out of England but you can’t take England out of the boy. You’re reading these questions, quickly look behind you and describe what you see. All the volcanoes in the distance. From my studio here you can see Mount Agung on a clear day. Can’t be bad for inspiration! What’s worse: Being toothless in a corn eating contest or being legless in a butt kicking contest? Why? Wow what a mental question… Erm! Well both sound pretty pony to me, but think I would rather have no teeth than no legs but I must say I can’t stand the taste of corn so that’s a tough one to choose. You got anything coming up? Well it’s a new year and I’m putting a lot of focus back into making new tracks and hopefully get some bangers out there as I’m not the best for finishing off tracks and must have about 20 tracks still sitting in Ableton waiting to be finished. Ha ha. But yeah got loads in the pipeline with gigs and got some interesting collaborations coming up that I’m looking forward to getting on in the studio so 2012 is gonna be an exciting year. You can catch Glynn’s sounds at many spots around town - Kudeta, La Plancha, Sky Garden, La Barca, and Cocoon.

t was a rainy night all over the island when Stephane K performed at Mint but people still flocked to the club to see him. There were a few special booths inside like a photo booth where the people could get some quick pics and a welcome drink booth where you could get a you know what. Stephane’s performance, along with unique decoration and girls in cabaret costumes made the party really rock.

nother rainy night poured down on the island but it seems like the party never stops for any reason. Sky Garden had an event with DJ Carl Kennedy as their guest DJ. A very respectable crowd turned up for the event and it seemed like certain euphoria enveloped the entire Sky Dome where he performed his very clean beats for a very keen crowd.
