The weather once again was the major talking point in the last two weeks. I had a horror trip to Jakarta last week for the Beat BBQ at Lex in Kuningan where the plane I was supposed to catch was turned back to land at Surabaya because the weather was so bad at Denpasar Airport that they couldn’t land. The plane was eventually three hours late to Jakarta arriving at 3.30 in the morning Bali time, but looking out the window from Bali airport that night when it was supposed be leaving I wouldn’t have wanted to get on any plane at that point anyway. The flight across in the end wasn’t particularly pleasurable in any event but we did make it. I’d have to say congratulations to the pilots; it’s surely no mean feat doing that stuff every day this time of the year. Meanwhile, there have been a number of calamities and hold ups over the past weeks due to the weather, but one can’t say it’s unexpected; it is the wet season after all. Let’s hope it blows away pretty soon. So back to the party. We have another mixed bag coming our way in the next weeks. German rock band Heaven Shall Burn will be playing live in Menteng, while living legend in the DJ music world John Digweed is back in town for a gig at Stadium. DJ Harry Choo Choo Romero will be putting down some tracks at Immigrant next Friday night and Valentine’s Day is coming soon too with just about every restaurant and venue supplying the romantic setting for all the cupids in town to frolic and display their mutual love to the whole world. So sweet. So, it’s all happening around Jakarta again this week. Keep dry, keep good and for all the information on the shows around town and the main acts visiting our shores, please go directly inside to the What’s On and HereNow sections to find out more. There’s plenty more inside too, so help yourself to another dynamic edition of The Beat Jakarta magazine and have a great two weeks in the city.

Heaven Shall Burn is a German metal band that was formed by Matthias, Maik, Alexander, Eric and Marcus in 1996. Disaster Harmony Day: “Lets Learn From Japan”

ill divo If you are a calssical music fan, and in particular, popular operatic music fan, you must know of Il Divo. Il Divo is a vocal super-group that was created by Simon Cowell through a talent contest that was held from 2001 until 2003. Il Divo is formed by Carlos Marin from Spain, Urs Buhler from Switzerland, David Miller United States and Sebastien Izambard from France. On February 25, Il Divo will sing live at The Ritz Carlton Jakarta Ballroom, Pacific Place Jakarta. A show not to be missed.

Indonesia is a strategic area because it lies between two continents and two oceans. Unfortunately, this fact also makes Indonesia to be a little disaster-prone because of the fracturing slabs and pathways that make up the chain of volcanic mountains and islands that is Indonesia. Indonesian people have to accept the fact that natural disasters are inevitable in their beloved homeland. There are things you can do to make peace with the situation, and that’s why Pusat Krisis Fakultas Psikologi Universitas Indonesia created the event “Disaster Harmony Day” that carries the message of “living in harmony with the disaster”. In this regard, Indonesia could learn from Japan who have long adjusted to the many disasters that are present through theatre, photo and poster exhibitions, documentary screenings, talkshows, etc | February 20, 2012 at Gedung IX Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Indonesia. 1pm-5pm

Beberapa nama besar DJ internasional pun menginspirasinya, seperti John Digweed, Carl cox, Sasha, James Zabiela, Grant Nelson. Kualitasnya lebih dibuktikan dengan menyabet kategori Female DJ Of The Year dalam ajang Paranoia Award 2011.

Keren!

Monday normally sucks but at least you can go to the ‘I Love Monday’ parties at Millenium. They always present quality DJs and on January 23, DJ Romy, one of the best known Indonesian DJs performed. The resident DJ’s kicked off the night with Romy reaching for the decks around midnight. Romy, who is the head honcho of 1945 Music Factory played his tunes, from techno, tribal until progressive for around two hours. He created the perfect sonic atmosphere that night. Very Cool!

Which side of the digital divide are you?

A

re you relieved or alarmed if denied access to Facebook? It probably depends on whether you’re under or over 45

Sleeping lightly, you’re unexpectedly awoken by some noise at 3.30am. What’s the first thing you do? If you turn on the light, glance at the bedside clock, turn off the light and try and get back to sleep, you’re probably over 45. If you turn to your smartphone (which you haven’t switched off for the night) to check your Facebook or e-mail account or if anything has arrived on BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), the chances are you’re under 45. These assertions are not the result of months of scientific research or detailed survey work but, rather, straightforward observation of behaviour, plus anecdotal evidence. What’s more, there are many under-45s with views more similar to their older counterparts and vice versa, so the digital divide is not as sharp as it might seem. Many of the younger generation, who were not even born at a time before the internet existed, find it hard to understand how anyone could possibly survive without Facebook and BBM access on a 24/7 basis. If, for any reason, they are unable to maintain contact via these two platforms for any length of time, they can become panicky, insecure, feel isolated and worry about what people may be saying behind their back.

friends on BBM. Before they disperse, they will also each have to take a group photo, which can then be uploaded to Facebook so their friends in cyberspace can keep track of what they’ve been doing. On the other hand, those from the older generation, who were perfectly happy to rely on the old-fashioned telephone or – amazing! – face-to-face contact for keeping in touch before the advent of the internet – and still do – take a dim view of the preoccupation with Facebook. It seems to take up so much time for its users to keep abreast of each other. The over-45s are not luddites, though, for most, if not all, use e-mail extensively at work and home and communicate routinely via text messaging. They may even be aware that a tweet is not just the sound made by a caged bird, and might even tweet occasionally themselves ... The reality is that the internet has become an indispensible communications medium for all of us. Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last 20 years the chances are you are already well connected, digitally, one way or another. What ultimately determines the side of the digital divide you occupy is the extent to which you embrace the world of cyberspace and how much of your life it dominates. How many of those you would identify as a “friend” are virtual or real?

What music are you into at the moment?

What are your all-time favorite albums? Why?

049

Let me see... these past weeks they are:

Too many! I’ll pick the underrated one, though: Roky Erickson & The Aliens’ I Think Of Demons. Erickson is a brilliant songwriter and lyricist. Before there was The Misfits, he already wrote songs about demons, zombies, ghouls and evil aliens. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Can’t remember. Today, I always download albums before I get them in vinyl version if I like it. It’s good to save your money. FYI, I am an avid record buyer. Downloading is a good way to test some music before letting go of your hard earned cash. Haha!

f e a t u r e

The Devil’s Blood’s The Thousandfold Epicentre This second album from them is great, although not as great as their first mini album. Evil never sounded this good. If you like the new wave British heavy metal sound or just heavy rock, I think this is for you. Ken MODE’s Mennonite Anyone into noise rock will love this. Midnight’s Satanic Royalty This is when Venom and Motorhead have a bastard son. Good production too, this one. Thou’s The Archer & The Owle They kept releasing good stuff if you are into heavy, sludge metal. Toxic Holocaust’s Conjure and Command Metalpunks at its best. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? I don’t really remember, but when I was about eight years old I asked my father to buy me a cassette tape of the band with that surf feel which my dad usually played on his record player. He bought me The Beach Boys on tape. It was the era of bootlegs in Indonesia, so it was ‘The Very Best of’ album. I think I went to the records store by myself when I was around 10 years old, bought some new wave compilations on cassette tapes. I remember earning money from drawing Japanese robot characters and selling the drawings to my friends. My first CD is also the first CD that I bought, is an album by Faith No More, The Real Thing. At this time I don’t have a CD player, but the format at the time was amazing. Looks futuristic, haha! I think I was 15 years old. There’s this new record store in the north of Bandung where I use to go with my family when I spotted that they started to have CDs. Only two albums, though, Faith No More and Soundgarden’s Louder Than Love. I already had Faith No More’s album on cassette tape, but was mesmerized by the CD look.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Myself. With better planning. Ha! What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy? Most books I buy are art/design books, so it’s not really reading… But I just finished State Of Authority: The State In Society In Indonesia by Gerry Van Klinken and Joshua Barker. Scary insights about this country, basically about the history of local Indonesia gangs, mafia, military and the government. Buy this. What new movie should people see? Why? Definitely Prometheus out in July 2012. Ridley Scott is directing it and working again with artist H.R. Giger. I’m a huge Alien movie fan and also am a fan of stories about ancient aliens, so I’m really excited to see it soon. What album do you choose to start your weekend? Depends on the mood, but usually a dose of heavy metal albums is great to boost the mood. This week I blasted The Devil’s Blood’s whole catalogue! The result is I finished two huge drawings, got tattooed, and kicked a motorcycle that sounded his horn because I was getting in his way—while I was walking on the sidewalk! I called that motorcyclist, a ‘motoretarded’. Eat that, a--hole. Hahahaha! And the album you choose to end your weekend? Same answer as above. Maybe blasting some traditional doom metal sounds are good to inspire me to kick some more ‘motoretardeds’!

Jakarta Players Jakarta Players is a non-profit community theatre organization, where memberships are open to anyone interested in theatre, without any previous theatre experience needed. Members, which consist of Indonesians and expatriates, are not only involved in the talent department, but also in directing, costume, lighting, makeup, ticket sales, and other backstage and stage work. Members of Jakarta Players are not only signing up for experience in theatres, but also to learn new skills in production.

Jakarta Players are dedicated to provide highquality English language entertainment for all theatre-loving people. The proceeds from the plays will be donated to local Indonesian charities, mostly child-based charities. They put four to five plays in Jakarta every year and this time Sondheim’s notable and classic work will be the first play for Jakarta Players to start off 2012. This time around they are going to hold their own interpretation of the musical ‘Into the Woods’. ‘Into the Woods’ is a musical which originally debuted in 1986 in San Diego, with music and lyrics by Academy Award winner Stephen Sondheim (his other scores include Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, and Assassins) and story by James Lapine. The original ‘Into the Woods’ musical won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical. The story is a mashed-up plot of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, and the characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. It tells the story of a baker and his wife trying to start a family, most likely taken from the Rapunzel tale by the Brothers Grimm along with some other popular fairy tale references. visitors to gain knowledge and learn about the process of making ceramics. The selection of clay, how ceramics are made, and how it is processed in the oven is explained to visitors from the start to the very end. The first activity package is the Culinary Package, where visitors can join the tour and indulge in the five Indonesian dishes the estate provides at its restaurant. WOMEN WIRED WEEKEND –

Women in the Digital Era Women Wired Weekend is an event about the Indonesian woman’s place in the digital era, not only as consumers, but also as powerful stakeholders in the industry. The aim is to inspire women on how they can enrich their lives with the smart use of the internet, as well as giving brands/marketers a better insight on women’s behavior in cyberspace and how to reach them more effectively.

M

www.beatmag.com

ore and more marketers are now paying special attention to the female audience. And why not? Women nowadays are known to be the main decision makers in their household and they are proven to be very influential when it comes to getting people to purchase products. It’s actually the same case in the online world as well. Women engage in a lot of e-commerce activities through forums, online shops, and social media. They purchase stuff from fashion to make up and airplane tickets to food. But they are not merely consumers; many of them are producers as well. Eventually, this is exactly what the industry needs in order to develop the foundation of growth. To further explore women’s roles in the digital world, Female Daily Network, one of Indonesia’s biggest female online communities, together with Kibar Kreasi and fX Lifestyle X’nter will hold Women Wired Weekend – A Gateway to Connect and Collaborate, on February 25 and 26.

For two days, there will be conferences, a bazaar, and gatherings. The conference will be conducted twice, from 10am to 5pm each day, and the bazaar will be conducted all day for both days. The conference will bring in experts from different fields that represent different aspects of women’s lives: family, education, career, finance, technology and fashion to give talks on various female-related topics. Some names that have been confirmed include Erika Oktora, Team Leader of Google AdWords Southeast Asia, Aileen Apolo, Program Manager for Outreach at Google Southeast Asia, Ligwina Hananto, Financial Planner, CEO of QM Financial, Najelaa Shihab, Co-Founder of Sekolah Cikal and Betti Alisjahbana, Founder, CEO of Quantum Business International. The bazaar, called Market Plaza Day, will be held during the two days of Women Wired Weekend. Here, unique, well-curated items from clothes, accessories, bags, shoes, skincare, makeup and kids’ products can be found. For more information, please visit www.womenwiredweekend.com

The Roots Undun

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

U

ndun is The Roots’ latest project, and it is a concept album. It tells the tale of a man, Redford Stevens, dying in reverse, rewinding from the moment he became a statistic and hitting the points in his life where he’s at his most self-aware. Redford Stevens, a fictional young adult who is plagued by crime and tragedy growing up in a dangerous and hopeless environment that, in turn, represents our society today. All in reverse narrative. Even if you are a seasoned Roots veteran, Undun will challenge you, or any listener. Every line is a clue, every song is a story; each are all pieces to the young Stevens’ tragic life.

www.beatmag.com

Lyrics are of the highest caliber on this album, and from the somber “The Otherside” (“Playing with the fire/ That burned my boy”), to the forceful “Stomp” (“The wheels spin/ I’m looking for a sacrificial lamb”), and the selfreflective “I Remember” (“I’m looking back/ And y’all look the same/ Troy, Mark, and little/ What’s-his-name”), every line has a purpose. Everything is done for a reason on a Roots album. To avoid spoiling it completely, I will not dig into each and every song and analyze. Every track has its own message and paints its own picture to the story of Redford Stevens – all open to interpretation. That’s what makes Undun so fascinating. It’s like a badass jigsaw puzzle. What a line and a song can represent and how it can differ from opinion to opinion. Above all, it’s all about how it sounds, and that’s the other half of the fun. The Roots have never made a bad album, and this isn’t the first. Being Jimmy Fallon’s house band has been glorified practice for the group, and the instrumentation is sharper than ever here. It’s going to take some time, dedication, and lyric looking-up to fully understand the album. The more you listen, the more you love. The last four songs (“Redford” to “Finality”) are all instrumental, each shorter than two minutes, surely pushing Hip-Hop fans to the edge. The album is melancholy and at times perplexing, and the concept does limit The Roots from being the lively, jam session band we love. But this may be the most intimate project The Roots have ever made. And that’s saying something. This isn’t the Roots’ most accessible album, and it’s certainly their most downbeat, but it comes from a place that isn’t always easy to dwell. [DJ Squared]

No Love Tunes on This Valentine’s By Erza S.T.

I

think it is just natural to expect some “love” inspired music in this Valentine’s month of February. However, this 2012 Valentine’s Day seems rather different than previous years. Forget the love tunes and instead focus your musical vision onto the dramatic world of opera, religious sacred songs and chamber melodies. Aula Simfonia Jakarta is back with their latest concert production and unlike before, this production is rather small in scale. Still within the “religious” ambiance due to it’s character, Aula Simfonia Jakarta is back this month presenting you a vocal recital of “Opera and Sacred Songs Duet”, featuring Malaysia’s famous soprano: Cecilia Yap and Singapore renowned mezzo-soprano: Anna Koor Chooi Choo. We know little about the concert program, but understanding each singer’s characteristics, I am quite sure that we shall see great selections from composers such as Bellini, Puccini, Catalani, Bizet for the opera program to Handel, Mozart and Bach for sacred song program. The soprano, Cecilia Yap, is one of Malaysia’s best sopranos. Graduating from Santa Cecilia Conservatorio in Rome, Italy, Cecilia has won international awards during her time in Europe. Her critically acclaimed performances have given her a main role in operas such as Carmen (as Micaela) and Turrandot (as Liu). She is noted mostly for her dramatic flair and refined vocal expression. Like Cecilia, the Singaporean mezzo-soprano Anna Koor Chooi Choo is also an established singer. This lyrical-dramatic singer is known for her rich and mellow timbre. Around the Southeast Asian region, Anna is recognized for her sacred song repertories from Bach to the Rossini eras.

It is quite unusual to combine opera and sacred music in one program. Though it is not a popular combination, there were some attempts, including Anton Rubinstein’s Christus opera that is often classified as a ‘sacred opera’. Who knows if Cecilia and Anna will perform one of the arias from this opera? That would be a fun surprise for sure. On a lighter note, we are also going to have a chamber concert that is organized by the Jakarta Conservatory of Music, featuring some of our great musicians including Iswargia R. Sudarno (piano), Yasintha Pattiasina (violin), Ali Hanapiyah (violin), Sulistyorini (cello) and Danang Dirhamsyah (piano). Back to its history, chamber music is a form of classical music for a small group of instruments. The word “chamber” indicates that the music can be performed in a small room or a private salon with an intimate ambiance. It can be performed in a residence between friends and family or even in a palace court. Today, chamber music performances have migrated from home to the concert hall, but every now and then we can still find chamber music performed in someone’s residence. This coming chamber concert chose the Erasmus Huis auditorium that is actually perfect for this kind of music. Together, they will perform some great compositions from Beethoven, Grieg and Schubert. Though love tunes are missing from the concert program this year, this does not mean you cannot show your love. Why don’t you take your loved ones to see one of these concerts above followed by a romantic dinner for two.

FINGERS CRISPY CHICKEN

Fingers Crispy Chicken is a Singapore based eatery with a specialty in chicken wings. Their flagship store in ION Orchard has become quite the address for tasty crispy chicken wings in the lion city. Before coming to Indonesia, they opened more outlets in the Philippines and India.

Welcome to a place for wings and things that could become the next big hit in Jakarta.

The first 4 Fingers store in Jakarta was opened at Epicentrum Rasuna Kuningan in March of last year. We recently visited their latest outlet at Cilandak Town Square (Citos), opened on December 18, 2011. The place has a certain cozy character, with a hint of a New York City subway station about it.

This might be an oxymoron, but in this case, its certainly true. A youthful feel is presented by the graffiti paintings adorning the walls. Speaking of youths, we heard that it is not uncommon to see a group of school children in the restaurant devouring a huge number of chicken wings. Sometimes more than a hundred of them in one sitting! There are many variations of chicken dishes on the menu at 4 Fingers Crispy Chicken. You can order a la carte, but I suggest you go for the value meals instead. All the dishes include French fries and a small soda and all the prices we mention here are the prices of value meals. One of the few non-chicken dishes is a very nice starter, the Tofu Salad (50k); pieces of crisp romaine lettuce, tofu, and mushroom, and doused with a special sesame oil and soy garlic dressing. Yummy! Delicious, and healthy, too. Now, about the renowned 4 Fingers Crispy Chicken value meals; you can have a choice of wings or drummettes, or a mix of both. The chickens are hand brushed with a choice of special Korean-style Soy Garlic or Spicy sauce. Both are equally full of flavors. The prices are Rp. 44,545 for 6 pieces, Rp. 85,455 for 12 pieces, and Rp. 124,455 for 18 pieces. We also tried the Katsu Chicken Sandwich Value Meal (Rp. 51,818 for a set of two). They look a bit

like Mexican tacos, but the taco shell is replaced by a mantou or Chinese bun. Inside, they are filled with romaine lettuce and chopped chicken, and drenched in special mix sauce of Kimchi and mayonnaise. And we have an interesting mix of the East and West here! Up next, the Chicken Wrap (Rp. 51,818); Tortilla wrap filled with chopped chicken, romaine lettuce, tomato, mozzarella cheese, with a flavorsome curry mayonnaise sauce, and served with salsa on the side. This was definitely our favorite pick of the day! Highly recommended. Another noteworthy dish at 4 Fingers Crispy Chicken is the Chicken Chop (Rp. 51,818). It is just a simple combo deep fried chicken breast with fries, but it brought a big smile to our faces. By the way, the fries here are seasoned with a special mix of chili and seaweed flakes. This special seasoning seems to take the fries up another level. If you feel like having rice instead of fries, go for the Chicken Rice Box with Kimchi (Rp. 40,909), Tofu Rice Box with Kimchi (Rp. 43,636), or the Seafood Rice Box with Kimchi (Rp. 51,818). All are deliciously satisfying. All in all, 4 Fingers Crispy Chicken is a great place for family and friends to enjoy a new way of having chicken. (Budi Iskandar)

Make sure you have room for dessert, for the home made Chocolate Cointreau Mousse (35k) is to die for! The expert mixologists behind the bar at Circo Bistro have also whipped up a drink menu with many of the classic libations, as well as a few modern creations. They use the best seasonal ingredients and liquor available, all to encourage a festive lounge atmosphere for the after work office crowd and local residents alike. Our pick of the lot are the Black Ship (70k): Vodka, triple sec, blackberry jam, with pieces of dragon fruit, and the Lemon Banci (65k): Vodka, lemon, lemon skin, and simple syrup. Perfect for business lunch or even a date, Circo Bistro is a great addition to Jakarta’s culinary choices and we can already see diners jump at the opportunity to experience the restaurant’s tantalizing dishes and drinks time and time again. T

he capital city has its fair share of new dining places, but we recently visited a newly opened restaurant ready for the big time. Circo Bistro is situated on leafy Jalan Gunawarman, on the top floor of a small but stylish commercial building. The location is not too far from Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD) and Blok M, which makes it an ideal place to wine and dine in Southern Jakarta. The interior of the dining area features a contemporary palette of black, white, and a hint of gold; while the lounge-y area at the back of the restaurant has a retro chic feel. It’s ideal for a cool drink with friends. Pay attention to the cute bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar on your table! Circo Bistro specializes in Italian fare, but some Asian dishes are also available, this is Jakarta, after all. The menu has a broad range of made to order pastas, pizzas, as well as signature main courses. We began with the Mushroom and Ricotta cheese (37k) appetizer. This dish looks like a work of art; the blend of mushroom and cheese is put on top of a couple of small fluffy, airy pastries. Just enough to entice you to move on to the more hearty entrees. The wooden plate adds a nice touch. The Beef and Pepperoni Calzone (52k) is up next. A calzone is a type of turnover, which the dough is folded over and sealed on one edge or formed in an enclosed semi circular shape, and then baked in an oven. It is filled with ingredients commonly put in a pizza. This tasty blend of minced beef and pepperoni, added with cheese and aromatic herbs is certainly a meat lover’s delight. The Salmon Oreganato (85k) is one of the signature dishes at Circo Bistro. It is fresh succulent salmon on a bed of baby potato, topped with herb butter, and served with a salad with balsamic dressing. It’s just a wonderful dish. We also ordered the Chicken Picatta (35k). The chicken breast used to prepare this dish is sliced along its width, and then flattened with a tenderizer. It is then seasoned and dredged in flour before being browned on both sides and finally put on top of some al dente spaghetti. Simply scrumptious.

Remember when you were a child and you got excited discovering something new? Now that you’re old enough, these three films might tell you that sometimes something is better left undiscovered. An adventure to an amazing mythical island full of dangers? How about joining an expedition to Scandinavia to encounter a cold-blooded alien? Or gaining superpowers only to realize they can destroy your life? Choose at www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Adventure, Fantasy, Action. Director: Brad Peyton. Writers: Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn. Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens, Michael Caine, Luis Guzman. In this follow-up to the 2008 worldwide 3D hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is back for a family adventure and more stunning 3D images with new cast members like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Vanessa Hudgens. Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) must find his missing grandfather in a mythical island where strange creatures, gold mountains, and many secrets lie within. Together with his team, they must escape before a seismic shockwave sinks the island forever. Make sure your adventure kit is ready when you enter the cinema!

The Thing Sci-Fi, Mystery, Thriller. Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.. Writers: Ronald D. Moore, Eric Heisserer. Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen.

Serving as a prelude to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film of the same title, “The Thing” follows the expedition of Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winsted) who joins a Norwegian scientific team that stumbles across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice. When a simple experiment reanimates the alien, Kate must escape together with crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton) to keep it from killing all of them. The film might not be as great as the classic version, yet the tense and thrilling moments are abundant throughout the movie. Bring a bucket of popcorn and some hot drinks to keep you warm in the cinema!

Chronicle Action, Sci-Fi, Drama. Director: Josh Trank. Writer: Max Landis. Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Dane DeHaan, Michael Kelly, Alex Russell, Ashley Hinshaw. Three high school students gain incredible superpowers after making a discovery beyond their understanding. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides. For both the director and writer, it was their debut on the big screen, surprisingly this movie has gained critical nods from its preview for its ingenious story, edgy directing style and strong character developments. So go see “Chronicle” in the cinema and find your own superpower!

ns Questio o You Neeudrstelf Ask Yoe Befor asing Purch rizer Moistu

Daily use of facial moisturizers are recommended to be in your skin care routine. Not only that, it helps to hold moisture levels on the outer layer of the skin thus preventing and treating skin against dryness. they can also help to improve skin condition, tone, Texture and imperfections.

www.beatmag.com

Before you go to any beauty counter, ask yourself these five questions so you get the moisturizer that is best suited for you. 1. What is my skin’s moisture level? It’s very important before you purchase any moisturizer or skin care product that you understand your skin’s moisture level. Whether your skin is dry, normal or oily. Some people even have a combination skin where their skin is in general normal to dry, but their t-zone area

is oily. In general, for those who have dry skin, you can pick a heavier cream that is oil-based, whereas for oily skin, it’s suggested that you choose water-based cream that is mattifying and oil free. It’s easier for normal skin as they can choose both oil or water-based creams but do choose one that is neither too mattifying nor hydrating. If you have an oily t-zone you can just moisturize lightly on that area or even skip moisturizer altogether. Instead tap the remaining moisturizer on your finger to that area to give minimal hydration.

happens before, during or after your period cycle, then most probably the breakout is only caused by hormonal changes. You can just pick a moisturizer according to your skin’s moisture level. For acne-prone skin, choose a moisturizer that is labeled as oil-free, non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic. Oil-free products will feel light on an acne-prone and don’t feel greasy. Whereas heavier oil based products will most likely clog the pores for acne-prone skin hence causes unwanted pimples. Usually a lotion form moisturizer will be more preferred. Look also for ingredients such as AHA that is known for its exfoliating benefit to help improve your skin’s cell turnover therefore renewing your skin’s condition. And look for salicylic acid that helps to ease your acne-prone skin.

3. Do you really need SPF in your moisturizer? The fact is, most people don’t actually need SPF in their moisturizer not only because they use separate sunscreen but because they tend to use the same type of cream for day and night. There are very few moisturizers that can accommodate your need for sunscreen during the day, the minimum that you will need would be SPF 30, where in most cases, day cream only provides SPF 15 protection. Selected few actually provide SPF 30 and above with broad spectrum protection. If you do use the cream from the same product line for day and night, skip the day cream and purchase the night cream to be used for day and night. Unless you’re using a different kind of treatment for day and night and you don’t use separate sunscreen, then you would actually need SPF in your moisturizer.

5. Do you often experience redness, rash or itchiness or any other symptoms of sensitivity on your skin? If you easily experience redness, rash, itchiness or any other symptoms from change of temperature, weather or skincare then you most likely have sensitive skin. Contrary to the previous type of skin, you might want to skip moisturizer that contains AHA or BHA because you will only rip away a layer of your skin that you might want to keep. Ingredients such as chamomile, aloe or rose are known to be soothing on skin which you might want to look for in your moisturizer. Avoid moisturizer that contains fragrance, dyes, traces of alcohol or acid because they may potentially cause irritation to sensitive skin. Now that you’ve got all questions answered, you’re ready to visit the cosmetic counter to purchase your moisturizer. We suggest you to go to a department store where there are multiple cosmetic counters on the floor compared to a standalone store because that way you will have a wide array of choices instead of just one brand. Want to know what moisturizers our editors are currently using? We’ll reveal it on our next article!

4. Do you suffer from acne regularly or does it just happen during hormonal breakout? Sometimes people mistake the condition of their skin by thinking a hormonal led breakout as acne-prone skin condition. If your acne appear sporadically and most of the time only

Amalia - editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude

www.beatmag.com

2. What’s your skin’s true age? Skin maturity is not related to your true age. Sometimes a person’s skin can be younger or older than their true age. Some skin ages much faster than the rest. As you age, your skin tends to lose the elasticity and suppleness that it once had. It also becomes much drier because the oilproducing glands are not as active as they were before. For skin that has started to show signs of aging, you can choose moisturizers that give added ingredients such as antioxidant which can give your skin a boost. They can contain ingredients known to be very effective to combat wrinkles like retinoids. Heavier and thicker creams are also much preferred to give extra hydration to your skin and prevent it from flaking and scaling.

was happy to know that the first fashion show I watched in 2012 would be from Sebastian Gunawan. There was an image of a lady in a cheongsam, a Chinese dress, on the invitation and the fashion show was titled Shanghai Swing. So it was obvious that the fashion show would showcase Sebastian Gunawan’s creativity in designing the cheongsam. I can recall how amazed I was to see how a cheongsam could turn into an extraordinary piece of art in Seba’s hands last year. Apparently, Seba tried to maintain a similar style he had made in those previous shows in creating the Shanghai Swing collection. There were 50 interpretations of Seba’s cheongsam paraded in the fashion show that took place at

the ballroom of Hotel Mulia on January 11. “A cheongsam is similar with a kebaya, being a traditional garment that can be brought up to date in modern way. It’s also like a little black dress which is something that women keep and can be worn anytime,” said Seba. The collection was so varied with many of the cheongsam detailed with crystal, beads and feathers so they looked very glamorous. Some cheongsams have narrow waistlines and wide skirts as the designer was inspired by Dior skirts from the 50′s. The cheongsam also came in twopiece suits, such as a mix between strapless dress with bolero; or a combination of blouse, bolero and skirt.

urrently, there aren’t any exhibitions on at Edwin’s Gallery in Jakarta’s, Grand Indonesia. Art from previous exhibitions is hanging on the walls, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t receiving interest from passersby, myself included . One attention grabber is “Ars Brevis Vita Longa”, a statue made by Sigit Santoso, who is perhaps more famously known as a painter. Even though he’s using three-dimensional material, Sigit is able to maintain emotional imagery with resin. He portrays a disturbing image of poverty by creating a poor man sleeping inside a box which states that the poor and unfortunate artists are kept down by the state and businessmen. He’s successfully portraying a common view in the slum area of the city inside the luxurious gallery inside a mall and has gained a lot of attention.

Artists: Sigit Santoso, Andy Dewantoro, Januri, Ayu Arista Murti, Ay Tjoe Christine, Koko P. Sancoko, Tommy Wondra, Gusmen Heriadi, Edi Sunaryo & Adi Gunawan. Edwin’s Gallery Jakarta Art District, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town, East Mall – Lower Ground.

“The Forgotten”, a painted resin piece by Andy Dewantoro also talks about the less fortunate in the country. He creates a factory that almost looks like the Titanic. To make it more gloomy, he uses dark colours to get his point across. His artwork automatically finds its context with a labour strike happening right now in Jakarta.

On a lighter note, “Seri Tersenyum”, a series of five paintings, by Ayu Arista Murti shows the happiness of various kinds of people. There’s a king, a fruit seller, a monk, a farmer and a traveller; they’re all happy. It almost feels like she’s talking to the audiences and saying that happiness and sadness are just a state of mind. Edwin’s Gallery is worth a look at any time.

www.beatmag.com

Meanwhile, “Omnivora #3” and “Omnivora #7” by Januri views the problem on a larger scale. His paintings discuss existentialist matters through pictures of humans that float around with their troubles.

n the middle of the long and neverending debates between fine art and craft, Arya Pandjalu bravely breaks some barriers. In his “Soundgarden” exhibition at Ark Galerie, he also broke ground by using processed paper in his artwork instead of the resins that he is usually associated with. According to Arya he did this on purpose, for his current interest revolves around nature conservation and ecology criticism. Using imagery of birds from his childhood memories and a birdman, his signature character, Arya use non-concrete materials to move away from industrial kitsch. He has managed to bring the romantic feeling of the human relationship with nature and also satirizes how modern civilization exploits nature excessively. In his most highlighted artwork, “Factory and the Lonely Tree”, Arya creates a replica of a factory chimney made from a tree. He shows the modern perception that industrialization is a given, thus you breath the air along with the pollution in it. Since we accept that fact as a normal thing, we tend to be undisturbed and have no willingness to anticipate the problems that come with it. In “Break Free”, Arya humorously shows the human tendency to withdraw. Contrary to the old saying alluded to a turtle, the birdman is taking his wooden house in search of his long lost passion.

SOUNDGARDEN Artist: Arya Pandjalu Curator: Alia Swastika 26 January – 25 February 2012 Ark Galerie, Jl. Senopati Raya 92, Jakarta Selatan 12110

www.beatmag.com

Visually, the simplicity and narration strengthens Arya to be an honest artist with a message without being trapped in artistic pretension. The political context of his artworks lies in his ability to make us stop for a moment and let free the adventurous desires in our hearts, to be close to nature, as an escape from the modern world.

WiFi USB Flash Drive Cufflinks

These cufflinks are either the ultimate in 007 gear for the average man or the geekiest cufflinks on the planet. Either way, they’re at least dead useful, unlike normal pairs. Brookstone’s polished silver cufflinks each hide a USB drive that offers 2GB of storage and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Something this small isn’t going to generate Internet for you like a phone. Instead it connects to a computer and, via a free software download, can re-transmit the machine’s Wi-Fi, creating another hotspot. www.cufflinks.com $ 249.

The Stationary Epicycle This is the stationary bicycle that uses an epicyclic transmission and magnetic resistance to provide intensive s p i n n i n g w o r k o u t s . Inspired by 19th-century monowheels, its dualsatellite transmission translates a single pedal revolution into four flywheel rotationsthus a rider spinning at 100 rpms causes the flywheel to spin at 400 rpms. The flywheel engages the cycle’s 36” diameter copper ring; six magnets installed around the ring’s enclosure work with the ring to generate a magnetic field, providing 12 levels of resistance controlled by a touchscreen display. The carbon fiber handlebars adjust for comfortable reach, the padded Alacantra saddle adjusts to four positions (1/2”-8 1/4” range) for comfortable height, and each pedal’s large surface area keeps a greater portion of the foot in contact for more efficient pedaling. The treatment embraces a traditional Balinese massage with the addition of hot stones and comprises of a five-minute refreshing flower foot bath with sea salt and peppermint extract, an aromatic traditional massage with a selection of massage oils to choose from, and hot stones gently placed on different sections of your body as you receive the most tender yet firm massage with the incorporation of the hot stones, taking all of your tension away. When you are receiving treatment to the front of your body, the hot stones are placed over a mask on your face creating a warm therapeutic feel.

Blarney Stone Irish Pub at 61 Legian Address 61 Legian Street, Kuta Bali Telp : 0361- 755423

Ah yes, there’s a lot to be said for the good old public house, particularly when it’s of the Irish variety. I doubt there’s a city on earth that doesn’t have some kind of Gaelic establishment – testament to that fact that everyone loves a taste of the Emerald Isle from time to time. Blarney Stone Irish Pub brings a new dimension to the downtown Kuta dining scene, serving up a menu of appetising bar snacks and scrumptious comfort food, alongside a healthy dose of the famous Irish ‘craic’, not to mention more imported and draught beers than you can shake a four leaf clover at. Adding to the ambience, there are regular live music performances, and DJ Bobo spins a mix of old Irish ditties and country and western tunes every night. Plonk yourself down on one of their super spacious comfy sofas or pull up a stool at the bar (like I did yesterday) and take your pick from the mouthwatering menu of old Irish favourites

othing beats a good barbeque. Not to toot our own horn or anything, but this Beat barbeque was pretty darn good. On one hand, there was particularly great food and lots of it. The full buffet included steaks, a variety of sausages, succulent boneless chicken thighs, well marinated portabella mushrooms, grilled veggies and plethora of side dishes. On the other hand, free flow Heineken. People ate, they drank, and had a great time. Special thanks to chef Phil Mimbini and the rest of the hu’u crew for making this a great afternoon of excess and gourmet bbq fun.

aturday was full of rain and wind and general unpleasantness from mother nature. Kuta looked a bit quiet that night, but Eikon seemed to draw a fun crowd for DJ J Smooves. They arrived late, but the crowd that did come were loose from a very liberal night of excess consumption. One guy even got into his birthday suit, which his girlfriends did not seem too happy about. A few people wore superhero outfits while partying that night, don’t know why, but who cares, its party time! Wooohoooo!
