Jakarta is a great place. Some people like to knock it and say it’s not the greatest place ever to live with the traffic and pollution, etc. But for me and millions of others, I’d imagine it’s the only place to be. There are areas of it that I have never been and probably never will, but that’s the beauty of it, it just offers so much and so many different possibilities. Next week Jakarta has another major world-class event coming to town. The big shows seem more common place nowadays and the event this weekend in Kemayoran, the Jakarta International Djarum Super Mild Java Jazz Festival 2012, is probably one of the reasons that that’s the case. Before they started the festival in 2005, Jakarta hardly had any major international music events let alone any major international acts coming to town. That has all changed over the past few years with more and more major acts coming our way. Our collective hats are off again to the team at Java Jazz. There are a stack of jazz and contemporary performing artists on the way for the event and you can read more about that inside. Another show on the other end of the spectrum is the Sabtu Dansa reggae and ska event down in Bekasi for the people from the people. It’s the first time they’ve put this event on and it should be a blast. Ah we do get ourselves involved in some weird and wonderful things. That’s on next Saturday afternoon and evening. There are a number of other music events coming in the next couple of weeks too. You can check those in the What’s On and HereNow sections inside for yourself. We also have a load more stories and information from all over town including food, art, fashion, stories about people and new music. We just about have it all. Evanescence If you’re a fan of powerful vocals coupled with head banging rock music, you’re in luck. Evanescence, an American rock band known for the almost operatic voice of Amy Lee will be coming to the big durian. The two time Grammy winners will finally serenade their Indonesian fanbase for what will no doubt be an awesome concert. Evanescence will perform in Jakarta on February 25 at Pekan Raya Jakarta Hall A. Tickets are on sale now.
Aston Rasuna Aston International just won the “Venue MICE Award 2011 for The Best Hotel” from Venue Magazine that held a event as part of their fourth anniversary celebrations. Besides that, on January 26, Aston International also received certification for their quality management systems, ISO 9001 : 2008. Aston International also announced that they’ve been chosen to manage two new hotels that are located in North Jakarta, Aston Pluit Hotel & Residence and Favehotel Pluit Junction. Favehotel Pluit Junction will be the second Favehotel in Jakarta which is located in the perfect area, inside Mal Pluit Junction and offers 74 rooms with a concept of fun, fresh and friendly and also has an eclectic coffee shop.

Blue Bird, the Most Inspiring Brand Award 2012 Blue Bird just won the Most Inspiring Brand Award 2012 from Superbrands Indonesia. They received the awards on Thursday, February 2 at Hotel Gran Melia. This award is given to the brands that made a difference to their consumer’s lives through the quality of their product or service; and have contributed positively to the environment and the welfare of Indonesian society. Only one out of 58 Superbrands received Most Inspiring Brand Award 2012 and it’s Blue Bird Taxi. Blue Bird also won Superbrands 2012 award in the category of taxi services and the award was presented by CEO of Superbrands Internasional, Eamaan Sadler to Vice President of Business Development at Blue Bird, Ibu Noni Purnomo.
Friendly Fires Friendly Fires is a band from Hertforshire, UK, that is formed by Ed Macfarlane, Jack Savidge, and Edd Gibson. This group plays alternative, disco and funk and released their eponymous first album in 2008. That album was nominated for a Best Breakthrough Award at The South Bank Show Awards and was certified UK gold. A year later, they were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and at the Brit Awards as Best British Group and British Breakthrough Act. For fans of their music, there will be a precious opportunity to watch their live performance as Ed, Jack and Edd will perform at Fairgrounds Jakarta on March 17.

Stand Up Magic Stand Up Magic is a parade of famous Indonesian magicians where they use magic to make a crowd appear. Each magician will perform different tricks. The show will transform magic images that seems scary into the fun and interactive will be held on Saturday February 25 at Koloni, on the second floor of Mall Of Indonesia. The Magicians that will perform include Mas Bambang Purnomo Sigit, Fredic Conman, Tora Gani, Bazz Dante, Joseph Phantom, Boris Zor-el and Indra Frenos. Watch a few magic tricks like mentalism, pickpocketing, magic, illusions and more!
Blue is a vocal group from the United Kingdom formed by Simon Webbe, Lee Ryan, Duncan James and Antony Costa. They were formed in 2000 and broke up in 2005, but they reunited in 2009 and started touring afterwards. Blue is famous for hits like “All Rise”, “Sorry Seems to Be The Hardest Word” and “One Love”. Another vocal group is 98 Degrees that consists of Nick and Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons. They have worked together with Stevie Wonder for a song called “True To Your Heart”. Meanwhile A1 (along with being excellent BBQ sauce) is a name that was also kind of big in the boyband world, the group from Norway has three members, Mark, Ben and Christian. The success of the boybands in this country makes it profitable for those bands to come here. Blue, Jeff Timmons from 98 Degrees and A1 are the boybands that will perform in Jakarta, Hall D JIExpo Kemayoran on February 26.

Selain music house, Robyn juga memperluas ilmunya dengan mempelajari dance music lainnya, dan juga mempelajari program seperti Ableton Live Set. Hasilnya, dari mulai house, electro hingga dirty house, tech house yang dicampur dengan elemen sensualitas pun dikuasainya. Tidak hanya memutar piringan, Robyn pun juga piawai dalam mengolah vokalnya. CuePlay Jakarta Management pun resmi merekrutnya dan bergabung dengan mereka sebagai talent. Berbagai klab di Jakarta seperti Triple Nine, Second Floor, hingga ke daerah seperti Colors Pub Surabaya, Golden Palace Jambi, sudah pernah dikuasainya. Her love of House music was the reason why Robyn Sovia learned how to mix CDs a few years ago. Besides House music, Robyn expanded her scope by learning about other forms of dance music, and also has been using the Ableton Live Set program. The result is that she’s mastered many genres from House, Electro until Dirty House, Tech House mixed with sensual elements. Robyn is not only good at mixing some tunes but she also can sing well, and she officially joined CuePlay Jakarta Management as one of their extraordinary talents. She has performed at many clubs in Jakarta and other cities like Triple Nine, Second Floor, Colors Pub Surabaya, Golden Palace Jambi.

Sebelum terjun menjadi seorang DJ, Arien Cathrine berkarir sebagai professional dancer. Namun setelah terinspirasi oleh musik techno dan tech house serta nama besar DJ Mark Knight, Paul Van Dyk, Abel Ramos, Richie Hawtin, maka Arien tidak tanggung tanggung melanjutkan karirnya di bidang DJ. Lalu dimulailah perjalanan keliling klab di Jakarta seperti LUV’s Bar, Triple Nine, Venue, Kampus, hingga ke daerah lain di Indonesia. Bahkan Arien juga sempat merasakan dek DJ di klab luar Indonesia seperti Cristallo, Rain club, Luna Bar di Malaysia. Berkat kualitas yang diasah lewat jam terbangnya, Arien diajak gabung dalam 8Delapan DJ Management. Before becoming a DJ, Arien Cathrine was a professional dancer. Like so many FDJ’s nowadays she was inspired by the music and by big names like DJ Mark Knight, Paul Van Dyk, Abel Ramos, Richie Hawti, and Arien. She started to perform at numerous Jakarta clubs like LUV’s Bar, Triple Nine, Venue, Kampus, and others across Indonesia. DJ Odotto mengawali karirnya sebagai DJ pada tahun 1999 saat masih tinggal di Melbourne, Australia. Disanalah, Odotto memperdalam ilmunya sebagai turntablist dan juga DJ. Inspirasinya dia dapat dari Mixmaster Mic & Qbert dan setelah dia kembali ke Indonesia, langsung membentuk grup bernama cronik pada tahun 2004. Tahun 2008, Odotto berangkat ke Amerika untuk memperdalam lagi ilmunya, khususnya bidang scratching dan hanya butuh waktu selama 2 minggu untuk menyelesaikan ilmu yang dibutuhkan oleh seorang turntablist. Odotto pernah bekerja sama dengan DJ internasional seperti DJ Rattle and Fuzz, Naiki, dan Daddy K. DJ Odotto started his career as a DJ in 1999 while he was still living in Melbourne, Australia. He learnt about turntables and DJ-ing there was inspired by Mixmaster Mic & Qbert. After he came back to Indonesia, he made a group named Cronik in 2004. The first club that asked him to be their resident DJ was Amare in Bandung. In 2008, Odotto went to the United States to learn about scratching and only needed two weeks for him to finish his study. Odotto has worked with international DJs like DJ Rattle and Fuzz, Naiki, and Daddy K.

After a compilation album called Maia & Friends, this pair also released Sang Juara that contained the hits “Emang Gue Pikirin” and “Pengkhianat Cinta” in 2009. The solidness of this partnership has made their career continue to grow in the Indonesian music scene.

Gareth Thomas Rhys Emery, yang akrab juga dipanggil Gareth Emery atau disingkat juga sebagai GTR, memulai debutnya pada tahun 2002 saat vinyl berjudul ‘Nervous Breakdown’ kepunyaannya disiarkan langsung di radio BBC. Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival was held for the first time in 2005 to great acclaim. Jazz music became a force in Jakarta, making enthusiasts long for the dates of the event. This festival, presently the largest jazz festival in the Southern hemisphere, immediately became the pride of Indonesia. The continuous success from one year to the next has made it one of the most talked about jazz events around the world. There are many international opinions that The (Jakarta International) Java Jazz Festival has become the jazz festival destination and has even placed Jakarta as one of the most important cities for jazz. In its 8th edition, the organizers are professing that the festival this year named ‘Jakarta International Djarum Super Mild Java Jazz Festival 2012’, will be even more special. Beberapa kali pengunjung bergantian merapat ke bagian depan untuk lebih menikmati musik yang dimainkan oleh Yasmin. Millenium held another event under the theme ‘New Concept The Series’ which is known for playing some South Jakarta tunes. On February 8, it was time for DJ Yasmin to play on the decks of Millenium. The show was started by resident DJ Michael and was continued by Yasmin. Yasmin who just won Female DJ Of The Year from Paranoia, played her set that consisted of progressive, house, and also Dutch house. Kaka, Bimbim, Abdee, Ridho and Ivan were rockin’ Hard Rock Café with their hits such as Mars Slanker, Jurus Tandur, Kirim aku Bunga, Maafkan, Kamu Harus Pulang, and Tong Kosong which had fans singing along with them. Many interesting things happened that night, like a duet collaboration from Kaka and Sandhy Sondoro, they even asked a fan to sing with them on the stage. Slank also asked for some donations from the crowd to help a legendary musician Donny Fatah who is in need of medical treatment. It was a fantastic concert!

Dengan dukungan sebesar 10.000 watt, bunyi musik drum n bass dan dubstep yang dikeluarkan dari speaker, membuat pecah suasana dan pengunjung yang meramaikan Marley pun tidak bisa berdiam diri. Endah N Rhesa lebih banyak memainkan hits seperti Norwegian Wood, 1234 (I Love You), True colors, Time After Time, I want you back, sexy back, nothing compares to you, dan lagu wajib yang selalu mereka mainkan yaitu L.O.V.E, sesuai dengan tema Valentine pada malam itu. Tidak ketinggalan mereka memainkan lagu milik sendiri seperti Tuimbe (Let’s Sing) dan lagu lainnya.
Many places celebrated Valentine’s Day in Jakarta, and among them was the Hard Rock Café. The harmonic duo, Endah N Rhesa performed to a pretty laid back lovey dovey crowd. At around 10pm, Endah N Rhesa got on stage and played their opening song “To Be With You” by Mr Big. Initially people only filled the table area but as the night went late, more and more people came and filled the venue. Endah N Rhesa played some hits like “Norwegian Wood”, “1234 (I Love You)”, “True colors”, “Time After Time”, and “L.O.V.E”, which went along with the Valentine’s theme of the night. They also played their own songs like “Tuimbe” (Let’s Sing) and many more.

Red Square juga mempersembahkan menu minuman sesuai dengan tema, yaitu Red Hot Shots dan Pink Chocolate Martinis sebagai minuman unggulan pada malam itu. Hiburannya, resident DJ Iwel dan Ricky Chattaway bergantian memainkan music house, Dutch house, electro, dan tidak ketinggalan para Red Hot Sexy Dancers memanaskan suasana. Pengunjung yang hadir, sebagian berpasangan dan ada juga yang tidak, namun Red Square tetap menebar cinta ke seluruh ruangan. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Jakarta born, and from Indonesian and Serbian parents, Milinka Mikaela Radisic, or better known in these parts as DJ Milinka, travelled to her father’s homeland this January. She was on a personal mission to meet her half-brothers and the rest of her Serbian family for the first time, but while she was there, doors opened fast in ways she never imagined and now she‘s come back to Indonesia as the cultural representative of both countries, and much more besides. David Trauts catches up with Milinka for a few words about the trip.
Milinka, how did you come to be in Serbia this year? I went to Serbia to meet my half brothers for the first time to talk to them about my dad.

And what did you need to tell them about your dad? Well, he took off from Belgrade in ‘63 because of war and he moved to Austria, Germany, and Singapore, and came to Indonesia in ‘71 and met my mom. He couldn’t go back because of the war situation. And when it was possible to go back he passed away. That was 12 years ago. He couldn’t communicate with his family because some people were blocking his way to tell them that he actually cared and never stopped loving them. Both my brothers in Serbia thought that my dad never cared about them anymore, so they refused to communicate with us here in Indonesia (me, my sister and my brother). As a duty to my dad, I went there to explain this to them. And what happened when you arrived in Serbia? I arrived just in time as my eldest brother (Dragan) passed away a few days ago from cancer. I met him on my second last day in Serbia. I met my second brother (Slobodan) and his family on my 4th day in Serbia and everybody accepted me really well. The reason I only met my first brother Dragan on my second last day in Serbia was that they were afraid that Dragan didn’t want to see me. And he was dying. But it turned out that Dragan really welcomed me, he kissed and held me and cried with happiness. It was a tough day as I met him the first time in my life laying down so weak, dying and he was also very happy to see me and sad at the same time. I don’t think I will ever have the

same feelings as I did that day. We were all very happy and sad at the same time. Today (as I’m writing this) it is Dragan’s funeral in Serbia.
You met someone well connected in the media and he spread your story around the news outlets in Serbia before you got there, right? What was all that about? Mr. Jovan Jovanovich (Serbian ambassador in Indonesia) introduced me to Mr. Ivan Zeljkovic. Ivan is a very famous TV producer in Serbia. He sent me an email offering help on my trip and was fascinated with my story so he got in touch with a few different people there. I met Ivan on the first night I was in Belgrade, and he gave me many contacts to all the media. My cousin Danica Radisic helped me a lot to connect and scheduled my interviews with them. For the first week I stayed at my cousin’s place. So did all those media connections prove fruitful? When the Indonesian embassy (KBRI) in Serbia found out that I was coming, they also asked me to come to KBRI to talk with the Indonesian Ambassador, Mr Samuel Samson about my trip to Serbia. It turned out that they really wanted to present me as a famous Indonesian artist in Serbia and explain about Indonesia to Serbians. Whenever I had an interview with the media, I was not only talking about myself but also Indonesia. And this is a big step for this country as I think I’m the only DJ who has ever been trusted by the government to be their representative in another country. They also called a very big magazine to interview me. And how was your music getting into the mix? On my second gig on January 23 at “Beograd
Promet” club, there was a group of about 20 people who came to see me from the Serbian and South Asia Association. A few of them were Serbian government people. They asked me to be involved in what they were doing. What did they want from you? They wanted me to help establish Serbia better in Asia, and if I could, to help change the mind-set that Serbians are somehow anti-Muslim like many people think after the Balkans conflict of the ‘90s. They know that I’m half Indonesian and my mom is Muslim from Aceh. In Serbia and East Europe my new duties are to represent and promote Indonesia to them and over here, the reverse. I’m now like a bridge between the two areas and now I have to learn a lot about them. I became a member of this group called the Indonesian and Serbian Committee on the last day I was in Serbia on January 26. I joined with my brother Slobodan. This group is developing the relationship for both countries to establish cooperation in many fields. Many businessman, scientists, professors came to the meeting and they are the member of this committee. In real terms what is the committee, or are you in particular, trying to develop between the two countries? I will be involved with the planning and implementation of many cultural and social aspects between the two countries. Things like sports, cultural exchanges, science and innovation, university exchanges and medium and small business cooperation. It sounds like you’ve come a long way in the past month. Will you still have time to spin tracks at this rate? Of course. Since I was really young I have done many things at the same time. I get used to it. I’m a workaholic. I get sick if I don’t do anything. I only have to think twice as smart how to do it without losing the duty to myself as a DJ, producer and promoter and the duty to my daughter as a mother. ;)

Besides your family commitments over there what were your other plans? Did you take your music on the road and play some gigs? The Ambassador of Serbia in Jakarta supported me by promoting me in Serbia and I got offered to spin in a club there. I brought my music of course and was planning to gig around. But my time was not enough as I had to go back to Jakarta on January 26. The trip was actually to introduce myself to my own family, the people in Serbia, club owners and sponsors. I have many bookings for this summer and I’m planning to do a tour in a few cities in Serbia and East Europe. I think I established my name really well this time.

Years have gone by and countless times she has walked up on stage and made people dance to rhythms and beats of Jamaican music, yet Danar Pramesti finds herself dealing with her nervousness but says when the music begins she becomes someone else. Danar, who is one of the lead singers of Souljah is an enthusiast who finds joy in life’s little adventures and says music is not only meant for fun but it is a tool that empowers and makes the world a better place. She finds poetry in every twist and every turn on this ojek-esque adventure we call life.

Before we were Souljah we called ourselves Arigatoo and then later on we called ourselves Souljah. There were no changes in the members only a slight change in image. Now often times the mistake people make is labeling us a reggae band when really what we play is Jamaican music. It’s a mixture of ska, dub, dancehall, rocksteady and so on. It’s difficult to find the soul to do straight up roots music like Bob Marley did so we stick to our own vibes and are grateful that our music has won people’s hearts. What is it about Jamaican music that makes people want to dance and move? I think the thing about Jamaican music is that it is very easy to listen to and in this world we
find ourselves in the hard situations a lot. So, at the end of the day the easy music moves us, we relate. What is it like to get up on stage and engage in this love of music with the fans? (Laughs) you wouldn’t believe it, but I am still nervous when I’m in front of a crowd and god knows I have done this too many times before, but looking out to a large number of people kinda staring at you or me in this case makes me nervous. I hate the spotlight to be honest. However, it is comforting to know that there are seven other people behind me to cover up if I make a mistake in talking to the crowd. I become someone else when I sing and have no problem expressing myself through Souljah’s music. It’s only the talking part that I’m not too sure of.

So you jumped straight into music right after college? Actually no. I worked in an advertising firm for a little while and one day friends convinced me that music was really the thing I should be doing. It’s one of those things where you take your chances, you let go of the norm, the financial comforts and the mundane. Souljah struggled at first, but after doing our little self promotion tours on our own budget, we’ve come along from that, but the lessons learnt from the experience along the way has made me and made us who we are today. What else can you tell us about yourself? I am simple as it comes, I love my ojek rides around town, I love my souljah family, I’m a traveler and a soul adventurer at heart. I sing to forget, forget whatever it may be. I have recently found a needed calm and escape in
stencil art and I guess from one creative process to another, music and the arts is what keeps me going. What can we expect from Souljah next? Coming up on the February 25 we have the Sabtu Dansa event, an event focused on Jamaican music. This is a venture of offbeat music, which I believe will be epic and I encourage everyone to come. Also, we are working on the concepts and everything else that goes into making our fourth album (fingers crossed) and also another project that is very near and dear to the heart of everyone in Souljah is the project we are initiating with Braddasouljahs (our fans) in terms of supporting fan members who, through unfortunate circumstances have had to drop out of school or kids who deserve much better by funding and providing them an opportunity to run a ‘Warung Braddasouljah’ where they will be able to run an operate a small scale business to enhance their entrepreneurial skills and be able to gain business sense and confidence in that. We want to instill value and purpose into their lives through little initiatives like these because truly these fans mean a lot to us. So at the moment, these are the things we are looking to do but follow @souljahmusik on Twitter to get the latest :)

Singing, has it always been your dreams? Believe it or not I know at this stage of my life that I am living my dream. When I was younger I remember vividly writing in my little diary that when I grew up I wanted to be a singer in band and lo and behold it’s where I am right now. I love it.

An activity center in the form of a cozy retreat called the Jakarta International Community Center (JICC) will help you better understand the culture and social life in Indonesia. It comes with a bunch of courses, a play center for kids, and other members who potentially will be your best compatriots in this foreign country.
JICC was founded in 2001 by two Indian women, Molina Hazuria and Veena Singh, with purposes to help new arrivals settle in and feel comfortable and at home. So, everyone (expats and locals alike) is welcome to JICC, to blend in and socialize with other new arrivals, and be active with a wide selection of courses for both children and adults. Classes include pilates, yoga, cooking, dance lessons, language skills, oil painting, and others. Some classes are more popular and fill quicker than others. Taekwondo and the little chef cooking class are the most popular among kids. Whereas the language and adult cooking classes are popular among adults, the cooking class is especially full with women. Occasionally, JICC organizes tours and conducts field trips for members to several interesting and entertaining spots. The play center is aimed for children from the ages of 2 to 4.5 years old. Playing and consorting with other kids are scheduled in sing-a-longs, doing arts and crafts, physical exercises, indoor games, and also story telling.

he first South to South (StoS) Film Festival was held back in 2006. The films screened at StoS are aiming to raise public awareness towards environmental, social, cultural, and political issues.The first festival was supported by Jatam (Jaringan Advokasi Tambang or Mine Campaign Network), and the focus of the event is not merely to entertain, but also to educate the public in sharpening their compassion and care towards the earth. The festival became an event held every two years and the 2012 event is going to be the fourth time around. Screenings are going to take place at several locations, such as Goethe Institute, Institut Francais Indonesia, and Kineforum at Taman Ismail Marzuki. StoS has always been screening great-quality films containing strong messages throughout the years, which most of them are the work of finalists of the prior StoS film competitionbefore the festival. Basically, the whole idea of the message from StoS films is to build awareness and solidarity between one community and the other in different countries. Each festival has a theme, and the one for StoS 2012 is Semangat Tanpa Batas, which means “passion without limits” in English. Since registration opened for the StoS film competition, the organizing committee has received 53 short documentary films and 32 short fiction films. And the results are a combination of 20 films being the best and going through to the finals. All finalists earn the opportunity to have their film screened at the festival. The grand jury will decide the best of the short documentary films and the short fiction films, and there are the StoS awards for the audience’s picks. The films screened at StoS are no ordinary flicks, they are very entertaining. It’s the important message sent to the audience that matters. Hopefully the messages will serve its purpose and we can share and give compassion to our one and only planet earth. (Dini Siregar)

The story started in 2007. Sashi Gandarum (vocal, guitar) was asked to be a regular performer doing acoustic cover version sets at a cafe in Kemang. Sashi then asked her old band mates Putra Praditya (guitar) and Aji Yudo (drums) to back her up. Drew, a unisex name, was also chosen due to an admiration for Drew Barrymore. Thus, a band was born. During three years when they played in bars and lounges hopping around Kemang, they had a chance to release an original single, "Unromantic". From there, they became more enthusiastic to release their own original works. Then in 2009 they recruited Shanda Singgih (bass) to join the team. Finally in late October 2011 their debut album, Sing With Drew, was released. It consisted of 11 songs, the compositions are basically easy listening pop songs but more deep and meaningful, yet based on non-fiction. Two well-known guys also participated behind the scenes for Drew’s debut album: Tommy P. Utomo as the sound engineer and Andi Rianto as the music director. Untuk trio baru ini, Drew kemudian digunakan sebagai identitas resmi. Drew sendiri bisa dimaknai ganda: sebagai nama yang merefleksikan sosok unisex dan tentu saja bersinggungan dengan idola mereka, Drew Barrymore. Setelah merasa cukup selama tiga tahun berkeliling ngamen di seputaran Kemang, kesempatan merilis sebuah single bertajuk "Unromantic" dalam kompilasi Nubuzz 1.1. cukup memompa semangat Sashi dkk untuk menerbitkan karya milik sendiri. Shanda Singgih lalu diajak serta untuk bergabung pada 2009 serta langsung bergerak secara kolektif untuk fokus lagi serius mengerjakan lagu-lagu orisinil Drew. Sashi bertanggungjawab di sektor vokal dan gitar, Aji di gitar, Shanda di bas, dan Putra di drum.

Pasca menerbitkan teaser pada Oktober 2010, sepanjang awal hingga pertengahan 2011 mereka kemudian menyiapkan seluruh materi untuk album perdana. Sampai pada penghujung Oktober, rangkaian komposisi yang direkam secara live di Aquarius Music Studio akhirnya resmi terbit dengan tajuk Sing With Drew. Dari jajaran tembang yang terdapat di dalamnya, seluruhnya bercorak pop ramah kuping walau tak bisa dibilang ringan tanpa kedalaman. Yang menarik, lagu-lagunya adalah non-fiksi alias berdasar kisah nyata. Dari 11 yang ada, 10 di antaranya adalah karya sendiri. Di antaranya adalah ritme ceria "Radio" yang bernuansa asmara, tentang seorang penyiar radio yang mengirimkan pesan ke seseorang yang dianggapnya istimewa dan semoga ia mendengarnya. Lalu senandung "High" yang berlirik Inggris berkisah tentang fenomena ketergantungan terhadap sesuatu/ seseorang, saking mencandunya, ujung-ujungnya ingin lebih, lebih, dan lebih lagi. Sementara satu lagu yang bukan karya pribadi Drew adalah "Aku Takut Jatuh Cinta Lagi" bikinan Ahmad Dhani yang di masa silam pernah dinyanyikan oleh Reza. Tak cuma itu, dua figur kawakan juga turut berperan membantu di belakang layar: Andi Rianto sebagai music director dan Tommy P. Utomo menjadi sound engineer.

How Safe are the Roads Where You’re From You may think road safety’s a real problem here but the problem exists elsewhere, too

e probably all reacted with a shudder at the news of two recent, deadly road accidents in Indonesia: the horrific case in Jakarta of nine people mowed down like ninepins close to Gambir Station, and the bus that fell into a ravine near Sumedang, West Java, killing 10.
In the second, the speeding bus reportedly collided with the rear of a truck in front, lost control and fell into the ravine. The constricted nature of the terrain then made rescue difficult. In both cases, willful negligence by the driver concerned allegedly seems to have been the major cause of the fateful accidents that occurred. Before you permit yourself the smug thought that such things just couldn’t happen back home in your country if you’re from overseas, remember this: Road safety comes at a price and all governments concerned decide (either consciously or by default) what is an “acceptable” accident rate on roads under their control. In richer countries, road safety standards tend to be higher, partly due to the adoption of more sophisticated traffic engineering techniques, but it is still true that much depends on safety awareness of the general public. It’s also the case that richer countries would have been able to afford to invest in comprehensive road safety education campaigns decades ago, while the reverse is truer in developing countries. That may be why anti drink-driving campaigns, coupled with appropriate legislation, which could have been used in the Gambir case, do not appear to exist here yet.
Equally, the appalling level of inconsiderate behaviour by road users here can sometimes be jaw-dropping: Look at how many motorcyclists and car drivers execute right turns or overtake, for example. Recently, the tendency for motorcyclists to ride along pavements at peak times and for car drivers to park in a road lane in South Jakarta reserved for bicycles have both been causing much annoyance. While many younger motorcyclists now routinely wear crash helmets because they appreciate that it’s safer to do so (rather than simply to avoid being stopped by the police), look at how many bike-borne families travel about: Mum and dad are wearing helmets but the two kids sandwiched in between are not. Should an accident occur, it’s most likely that the children will be snatched clear of mum’s grasp due to their momentum, with nothing to protect their head as they fall to the ground... Admittedly, the family-on-a-bike thing is a product of economic necessity but the lack of safety awareness for the kids is a matter of education. Many of the hazards that exist on the roads could be avoided if road users simply behaved with more consideration for others. The Jekylland-Hyde transformation that many undergo once they get behind the steering wheel of a car explains a lot of what happens on the roads today. Ultimately, though, no amount of road safety education or traffic engineering can eliminate the damage a willfully negligent driver can wreak. (Jim Read)

Working with legendary music producer David Foster, Houston transformed it from a slightly sentimental song into the powerhouse ballad we’re all familiar with.

ow many of us, with normal inhibitions loosened by alcohol, have at some time murdered “I Will Always Love You” (along with “New York New York” and “My Way”) at a karaoke bar? It’s not just the timeless, enduring quality of the songs that motivated us but the unforgettable way in which they were delivered by the recording artists concerned.

Houston’s untimely passing at the age of 48 just recently may have shocked, but probably did not surprise most of us. Like Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse before her, Houston was already well past her peak and had gone into a long, slow decline. Even without the personal problems caused by substance abuse and her tumultuous marriage to R&B artist Bobby Brown, Houston unwittingly created a problem for herself: Her interpretation of “I Will Always Love You” was so powerful, so perfect, she set the bar impossibly high not just for other singers but herself, too. It was just a matter of time before the awful realisation dawned on her that she could no longer produce that blistering melismatic performance, in which a single syllable of vocals was strung out over many notes, or hit those impossible, sustained highs with powerful, pitch-perfect precision. Winehouse went through a similar, agonising decline as the haunting soul that epitomised her vocal delivery no longer seemed to be there. Ironically, she posthumously won a Grammy award this year at the very ceremony that was so overshadowed by Houston’s death the day before. The recognition was for Winehouse’s performance of the slow jazz classic “Body and Soul” with veteran crooner Tony Bennett on his album, Duets II. It’s reckoned to be among the last commercial recordings she made and forms a fitting tribute to her artistry.
It seems, though, from the massive online sales of the singles and albums recorded by all three singers following their death, that people have a strong desire to remember them at their prime, rather than their decline. Jackson, Winehouse and Houston. The title of one of Whitney’s greatest hits somehow encapsulates what the lives of all three were all about: Didn’t we almost have it all? (Jim Read)

irvana was just about to break into the world charts as this show was performed at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre. They had just released Nevermind, which a week after the show would reach the Top 40. Within a month it was Gold and less than a year later, it would become a multi-platinum selling album. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” had just been released too and was climbing on the Billboard chart at the same time. The gig was captured on 16mm film in its raw entirety and the band was, understandably, a little freaked out. Live at the Paramount is hearing and seeing the excitement of this moment in time. A great band on the make, still whirling and swamped with anxious adrenaline. Every single song on this setlist has already been featured once, or more, on some other Nirvana live record, bootleg or label. But it is still a priceless collection from a special time. Kurt’s voice sounds astonishingly powerful here. As quoted by Pitchfork, “He sang in a way that was obviously unmaintainable, even with the aid of heavy cough syrup, there’s an excitement and buzz, although a slightly selfish one, of hearing his voice rip the air before he had begin to shout it down to bits. His unusual, wailing vernacular may have been a deliberate choice, or it might have been the only way he managed to fight and hurl those notes out from a constricted voice box, but there is a horrible, captivating intensity to it. Words feel torn from him, dragging hooks on their way out. Aneursym’s Love you so much/ It makes me sick” physically hurts to hear, as it always has, but it gives you some of the most devoted, vibrant performances of Nirvana’s well-recognized songs as you’re likely to get.”

n classical music, there is a term “operatic pop” – where pop music is performed in an operatic style. Artists who are in this category have successfully put themselves in line with the mainstream and have become world renowned. Musicians like Alessandro Safina, Partrizio Buanne, Mario Frangoulis, Amici Forever and Sarah Brightman are some great examples who have made this operatic pop fashionable. One other group who have risen to the heights of operatic pop are the four young men soon visiting Indonesia known as “Il Divo” In Indonesia, this Simon Cowell creation is already well known. In their career, Il Divo has already come twice to Indonesia. For those of you who still might not know these men, they are David Miller from USA, Urs Buhler from Switzerland, Sebastien Izambard from France and Carlos Marin from Spain. They are coming back for the third time to perform with an orchestra, singing songs from their latest album Wicked Game.

The Cow Feed Burger (55k) is a favorite for many patrons; freshly ground beef patty, served with green and red peppers, cheese, spinach, sautéed mushrooms, cucumber salsa, and Dijon mustard. Jill Taylor the costume designer created the costumes based on photos of The Prince and Showgirl’s cast and crew. “What struck me was how she was way ahead of her time, in terms of simplicity. I’ve got loads of stills of her in England just riding her bike in a big chunky sweater in a pair of jeans and loafers. Very simple. Very easy. She was a Calvin Klein girl before there was a
Calvin Klein. That’s the side I wanted to get across in the film,” Taylor explained about Marilyn’s personal style to Vanity Fair. In realizing the look, Taylor designed the costumes based on Marilyn’s photos within a neutral palette with colors like camel, black and white. The movie wardrobe includes a white dress when Marilyn was filming “The Prince and Showgirl” that was recreated for 11 days. Taylor recreated one dress only because of the limited budget. On the fourth day, the zip broke. “The way the dress was constructed, you’d have had to take the whole dress apart to get it out. So Vicki (costume assistant) stitched Michelle into that dress every day. Poor Michelle had to stand there for ages, and poor Vicki had to stitch her in! Every time Michelle went outside or ate something, Vicki ran after her to throw a wrap over her,” says the costume designer. What was the secret to achieve a Monroe-like body since Michelle’s figure is different with Marilyn’s? Jill Taylor said, “The magic of cinema achieves that shape!” While the movie producer Harvey Weinstein confessed to the Huffington Post, “we added something to her butt”. In social networks people often use the term to refer to a person’s mood or relationship status. here’s an old adagium that states “good works only come from a miserable heart”. Thanks to a guy’s rejection, Lioni Beatrik was inspired to make an exhibition called “52 Wednesdays” at Teaspoon Cafe on Jalan Benda. It all started when Lioni’s love proposal was rejected by a man named Alex. It didn’t take long for her to channel her pain into a photo of Rex, a dinosaur character from Toy Story, posed with a piece of post-it on its chest that said “I miss you.” It happened on a Wednesday at the end of 2010 and started a weekly photo series that has lasted until over a year later. Every Wednesday, Lioni would take a picture of Rex in various situation (in both sad and happy ways) and send it to her love lost to show her feelings.
The whole visual track of Lioni’s feelings, represented by Rex, shows the ups and downs that can happen along the journey. There are moments where Lioni feels so alienated and she takes a photo of Rex in the middle of some superhero action figures. There’s also a moment where she feel so disorientated and takes some meaningless photographs. At the end of the series, Lioni repeats the almost exact concept of her first photo but with a different note, this time it says “Have you been receiving my emails?” The only question that matters for her to end this suffering. Through Rex, Lioni is able to speak her mind and feelings aloud, without even using a word. By visual language only, she speaks the unspeakable, shows the hidden sighs and shares it with others to feel.

t’s interesting to see two different characters colliding sweetly in a very personal exhibition, even when the artists used to be a couple. “Bukan Mereka Hanya Kami”, a collaboration by Sarita Ibnoe and Yugie Kartaatmaja in Treehouse, Kemang, is where that is exactly happening. Sarita Ibnoe, working as a graphic designer and illustrator during the day, paints or experiments at night/early morning to balance things out between her work and passion, or just to make her hectic surroundings blur, relax and basically to keep her head together. Being a part of ‘kami’ in this exhibition, she tries to introduce her style of drawing as well as painting and the subject matter that comes to her mind while she draws and paints. There are mostly personal stories within it, a visual from some phrase that she reads or a representation of a fragment of time from her life so far. Fine-art-based mixed media and print making are the methods she uses to produce her art most of the time.
In this exhibition he tried to create an atmosphere about what is on his mind. The abstract shape and the gloomy side of surrealism from an artistic point of view which defines his life. Using digital media on acrylic, ceramic and canvas creating a monochromatic scene of what he believes is the ideal way to act. He combines this with the first paintings that he has ever exhibited.

Graduating with a degree in ceramic art from Bandung Institute of Technology, people usually say Yugie Kartaatmaja is very random about his work. He refers to his talent as ‘art based fluxus’ and he finds himself comfortable in any art media such as drawing, ceramics, digital print, mix media, video art, etc. Now he is currently doing an experiment in digital print and ceramic to combine them in a possible form. The phrase “life imitating art” is his main idea because everything he knows about art is wrong.

Delhi 2 Dublin- This eclectic band is formed by a motley group of musicians that successfully fuse Indian and Irish influences into a highly energetic show. This week, it’s a trip back to an old favourite on Eat Street – Trattoria Cucina Italia.
A couple of refreshing Margaritas (72k++) kick things off as we set about sharing a breasola rucola e grana (54k++), while surreptitiously making sure that the other one hasn’t snagged an unfair share of the awesome smoked beef slices.
How nice then to have a chance to revisit one of the original Eat Street institutions that is as reliable as a wood burning stove. Trattoria is surely the benchmark Italian restaurant in Bali, and without doubt everyone’s go-to spot when you’re all fusioned out.
For the mains, we follow the chef’s recommendation of the tangy penne all’arrabbiata (54k++), and the bocconcini di pollo con peperonata (77k++) – chunks of sautéed chicken with red and yellow peppers, onions and tomatoes. Both winners in my opinion.
So successful has Trattoria been that there are now multiple locations that have popped up around the island and beyond, with branches in Uluwatu, Jakarta, Medan, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and even Gili T. I’m also delighted to discover that a new Canggu Trattoria is on the way. Back on Lesmana, the décor is simple, unpretentious and, well, Italian – a concept that is reflected nicely in the expansive yet familiar menu of hearty home made pastas, pizzas, insalate, primi and secondi piatta, antipasti and dolce. Although I’ve come down for a review this is certainly not the first time I’ve been here, and quite frankly I could have written this one in my sleep, but nevertheless I arrived with my better half, fork in hand and ready to get stuck into a few dishes I’ve yet to have savoured.
For dessert we tuck into a bowl of classic Italian profiteroles - cream filled and chocolate sauce covered - we’re soon scraping the bowl clean. As is usually the case, the restaurant is filling up nicely, with punters queuing out the door despite the two separate Oberoi locations. Watching the cheery waitresses busily clear our table ready for the next diners, it’s clear too that the Trattoria formula really is a winner and continues being so. Ciao for now [Ashcroft]

oves In The House was the name of the game to kick off the week of Valentine’s and why not a trip up to fun lovin’ Ubud to get things rolling? Capsoul Band played Top 40 tunes and people in the crowd were lucky enough to be able to request their favorite songs. DJs GoezD and Joshe got up to the decks next to supply the urban beats to really get those love juices more than pouring out ‘til the morning hours.
