You know, I’m not into four square, I don’t want people to know where I am. I never open my account on Path, no use for that. Sometimes I will check the pretty girls on facebook, but for all you know all the photos are ripped off some ‘pretty girls’ site and the profile is run by some fat German fella sitting in a dark room in Helsinki. Twitter? It’s good for some hits but who has time for that? Or any of this for that matter. You could say my ‘reach’ is less than marginal and my ‘buzz’ is possibly indecipherable, but here I am, my personal profile intact, my ideas and thoughts collected over many years and now wrapped into something you would call ‘me’. How totally anti-social to be like that, keepinf it to yourself and not online. One thing I have noticed is that we all have to be part of it – or else... Or else you may miss out on something. And you wouldn’t want that. Our lives are now run at hyper-speed, there are so many things being jammed into our heads at a lightning pace from all directions at the same time and the question is—is it becoming faster because of social media or is social media just the product of this speed? It’s hard to say, but it is something to think about. So, there hasn’t been a lot going on lately besides a couple of good gigs that Illigals, or as they are called nowadays, The Voyuer at Illigals have put on. They have had some very good shows lately while most other venues have just been sitting on their laurels turning over the cogs. That should be changing as we head into the dry season, but this week the highlights are a blast from the past, Earth Wind and Fire playing in Senayan, Anthrax, for all you headbangers out there at Ancol, and why not, The hu’u Bali show at Dragonfly with UK DJ Glynn Tandy behind the decks next Saturday night and then the day after wind down at Liquid Exchange with The Beat Jakarta Sunset Party and BBQ. Does it get any better? Hard to say. Check inside for more details.

Lady Gaga will perform in Jakarta on June 3 but the fans are already so enthusiastic. This was evident by the long queues of people for the pre-sale tickets sold at fX a few weeks ago and thousand of tickets been purchased there. According to the plan, the singer with hits like Poker Face and Just Dance who has the real name of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, will perform and turn Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno into a giant magnificent stage. The concert is called ‘The Born This Way Ball’ and they say will last for two hours, with a theatrical concept that tells the story of the Lady Gaga’s journey of life. Stormsome.

Hails From UK

dragonfly | Saturday 24 Mar 11pm Let’s start with basics, tell us something about yourself.

Worst track/movie of all time?

I grew up in Blackpool, England, and spent my early years frequently in the party scene of the northwest of England in clubs like the Hacienda, Back to Basics and Cream where my love for house music grew but I left the UK when I was 19 and moved to Spain then Australia and have been living back and forth from KL, Malaysia to Bali for the last 14 years.

Anything by David Guetta I guess.

You aren’t only a DJ, you produce as well. What are you currently putting together?

What would you kill for? My mum’s Sunday roast dinner!! You can take the boy out of England but you can’t take England out of the boy.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen at a club? Seen many a crazy thing in clubs and probably best kept quiet... Ha ha. But I would say some of the most bizarre things would happen in Ibiza as pretty much anything goes over there. Top five favorite tracks of all time? Wow this is a tough one and there have been many times this question has come up and I still find it hard to pick five, but here are five that come to mind. 1. Where Love Lives - Alison Limerick 2. Vodoo Ray - Guy Called Gerald 3. Unfinished Symphony - Massive Attack 4. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division 5. Fool’s Gold - The Stone Roses Top three favorite movies of all time? 1. Breakdance 2. Scarface 3. Debbie does Dallas :-)

Erm...! “It’s a Beautiful Day” by U2... Ha

You’re reading these questions, quickly look behind you and describe what you see. All the volcanoes in the distance. From my studio here you can see Mount Agung on a clear day. Can’t be bad for inspiration! What’s worse: Being toothless in a corn eating contest or being legless in a butt kicking contest? Why? Wow what a mental question… Erm! Well both sound pretty pony to me, but think I would rather have no teeth than no legs but I must say I can’t stand the taste of corn so that’s a tough one to choose. You got anything coming up? Well it’s a new year and I’m putting a lot of focus back into making new tracks and hopefully get some bangers out there as I’m not the best for finishing off tracks and must have about 20 tracks still sitting in Ableton waiting to be finished. Ha ha. But yeah got loads in the pipeline with gigs and got some interesting collaborations coming up that I’m looking forward to getting on in the studio so 2012 is gonna be an exciting year. You can catch Glynn’s sounds at Dragonfly for one night only when the crew from hu’u Bar Bali take over for their annual Nyepi Getaway.

www.beatmag.com

Yeah, I started off DJing at an early age in UK and on the production side of things I have been making tracks for the last five to six years so that came after… I have just set my studio back up in Bali so I have a few new projects I’m working on and will be working with some local vocalists and musicians on the island as there is some great talent here.

It’s raining, you’re stuck in traffic. Exhaust fumes intermittently contaminate the air surrounding you, but you have your ipod and earphones. What do you play?

Have Been

DJ Faried’s name may be new in the DJ’s name list pumping up the jam in Jakarta clubs, but he’s evidently not a newbie in the dance music arena in Indonesia. It started from his interest to go to any clubs he could around Jakarta. With his job as the Manager at Indika Radio, he managed a lot of music and a few dance session programs, which were born from his hand, including Clubhoppers. Next, he also managed events, such as Triple Decker, he put together the compilation series of CD Mix Clubhoppers, joined with DJ Agoose and many other Clubhopper DJs. In short, he has helped a lot of DJs and parties become successful. But, it hasn’t made him become high and mighty, instead he wants to keep his space, and move ahead as a his own DJ. From the Clubhoppers 01 – 09, he received the number Clubhoppers 00. He appeared for the first time in the Welcoming DJ Sony Clubhoppers event at X2 Club.

See you there! He’s definitely busy with all his activities now, after managing DJs and the Sunday Anyway event that just been got an award, he also takes his show to many events. One of them is Clubhoppers Essential that will be held at Club Voyeur, Illigals. See you there!

The name Osvaldo has been on the list of many Jakarta events from small clubs up to enormous rave parties. In 2006, he was nominated for various awards including REDMA awards. He moved to China for a while to work in the Indonesian Ambassador in Beijing, but didn’t forget his passion to keep learning about dance music there. The DJ with the nickname Oos who was already with 1945 Music Factory became the 1945 MF representative in Beijing in the year 2009. He was signed with Bonzai Records, released a single and beside making a compilation album, he’s also made a bunch of remixes from big names like System F, Damiens S, Placebo.

DJ yang juga punya beberapa usaha yang dikerjakannya, baru saja meraih penghargaan dalam ajang REDMA 2011 sebagai Producer Of The Year, Track Of The Year, Peringkat 13 top 50 DJ Indonesia, dan Remix Of The Year. Oos just received awards in REDMA 2011 as the Producer Of The Year, Track Of The Year, Remix Of The Year and was ranked 13 in the top 50 DJs in Indonesia. In the middle of making classic dance music tracks, Osvaldo also DJs in a stack of events around town. Don’t miss him at Single Night held at Immigrant on March 21.

Fable:

Been Caught Recording

Fable, the Jakarta old cracks from the 90’s alternative era—and once tagged as the Jane’s Addiction of Indonesia—apparently are not dead yet. Just a few weeks ago they released their first full-length eponymous album. Formed in 1994, the trio, Adi Cumi (vocal), Temy (bass) and Anton Not (guitar) first created quite a big buzz with “Bintang” on Prambors Radio (Jakarta) and Ardan (Bandung), and then was included in Sony Music Indonesia’s compilation Indie Ten in 1998. After that they went under the radar. They only released mini albums and a few singles. Due to the busy schedule of each of the member (Adi works as a freelance illustrator, Temy and Anton both work in a radio), it took them more than a decade to finally press their “proper” record. Consisting of 10 alternative rock-fueled songs, some of them are actually the compositions that they often played during their shows from the early days till today. They also had one of the legends of Jakarta music scene, Robin Noxa (R.I.P.), contributing in one song, “Ta’ Ada yang Gelap”. Go check out the album and keep yourself updated by following them @fableofficial on Twitter.

www.beatmag.com

Smoking may be bad habit but many here find it hard to give up

It

Just look at how Hollywood films and advertising everywhere from the 1930s to the 1970s glamourised and romanticised smoking. One of the tests of an actor’s skill was how to light a cigarette and smoke it on film with panache while looking “cool.” Almost exactly 50 years ago, a landmark report, Smoking and Health, was published in the UK by the Royal College of Physicians that changed the attitude of the world towards tobacco forever. At the time, a man in the street was asked by a reporter in the UK if the enjoyment he got from smoking was worth the risk: “I think so, yes. If I’m going to die, I’m going to die, so I might as well enjoy life as it is now,” he replied. Heard that opinion before? Quite probably – and recently, too. It’s a somewhat fatalistic view that smokers in Indonesia are still expressing, a full 50 years after that seminal report was published. Approximately one-third of the population here smoke, with around two-thirds of all men and 5 per cent of women reckoned to be smokers. There’s no need to revisit the anti-smoking health rationale for it is well known. What is of value is to look at the pro and anti philosophical arguments, which are a whole lot more subtle. Supporters of the pro view say that in a free country where smoking has not been criminalised, smokers have every right to indulge their habit if they enjoy it, provided it doesn’t harm other people. Antis say that it is fair enough to smoke on the basis of an informed opinion but the problem is that most people become regular smokers

before they have been able to make an informed decision; by the time they are old enough to do so they are already addicted to nicotine and find it very difficult – if not impossible – to stop smoking. Indonesia remains the only country in Asia (and one of the very few in the world) that has neither signed nor ratified the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The government’s lack of political will to take on the powerful tobacco industry locally is also reflected more directly at a micro level, where non-smoking regulations in public places are enforced patchily at best. How many upmarket, air-conditioned shopping malls in Central Jakarta still allow customers to smoke in their cafes or restaurants, despite citywide regulations to the contrary? Although Starbucks quite rigorously enforce the nosmoking rule, coffee shops a few doors away may do so only halfheartedly or not at all. They may designate a smoking zone but it is not physically partitioned off from the rest of the premises so smoke eventually permeates the entire cafe. Sometimes, pressure against the tobacco lobby here is articulated externally but there is still a long way to go. In recent years, singers Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson both threatened to pull out of their gigs if tobacco companies remained as sponsors – and they got their way. However, look at the big jazz event that was staged in the capital a few weekends ago: If the title of the Jakarta International Djarum Super Mild Java Jazz Festival, featuring world-class performers like Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and Al Jarreau, is anything to go by, big tobacco is still able to promote itself prominently here when it really wants to. Meanwhile, I’m just going to pop out for a quick ... breath of fresh air, as far as the polluted atmosphere of the capital city will allow. (Jim Read)

www.beatmag.com

may be hard to believe but before the early 1960s hardly anyone in the world apart from those in the medical profession was aware that if you smoked, you would substantially increase your chances of contracting chronic respiratory disease or dying prematurely due to lung cancer or heart disease.

Heads Up, Bike Enthusiasts! I

ndonesia is the third largest consumer for motorcycles in the world after China and India. The motorcycle industry is ever growing due to it being a cheap and efficient means of transportation. And now bicycles are also a potential business in Indonesia, rapidly growing among all generations. The Indonesian people are now very enthusiastic with cycling, so much so that the demands for good quality bicycles are high and has made Indonesia the biggest consumer of bicycles in ASEAN.

www.beatmag.com

The Indonesia International Bike, Parts, and Accessories Exhibition 2012 (or in short, Inabike 2012) is going to be held for the second time at the end of March this year. This is an annual gathering and market place for international manufacturers and suppliers to be under one roof and to showcase their latest products such as parts, auto components, equipment, tools, and other stuff associated with bicycles and motorcycles. It is targeted not only to the public, but also for trade professionals and potential buyers from Asia and other countries. Being the only dedicated international trade exhibition focusing on bicycles, motorcycles, parts and accessories, Inabike 2012 is a great opportunity to lead this business to bigger success considering the popularity of bicycles and motorcycles in the country.

Like last year, the event is going to take place at the Jakarta International Expo Kemayoran, a perfect place for exhibitions and a venue built to international standards. There will be 300 exhibiting companies targeting around 25,000 visitors, professionals and individuals. Products exhibited at the event include sport motorcycles, road motorcycles, dirtbikes, scooters, all terrain vehicles, cross country (XC) bicycles, XC trails, competitive XCs, recreational XCs, competitive road bikes, endurance bikes, fixies, dirt jump/ urban and street (DJ) bikes, among others. Can’t wait already? Write down the dates and don’t you dare miss this! If you are into anything on two wheels that is. (Dini Siregar)

Back to the Future

www.beatmag.com

I’m

sitting on a plane cruising towards Australia to witness firsthand what the Future Music Festival in Brisbane will be like. I had heard a few things about it after doing some very rudimentary research, but I honestly had no idea of what I was getting myself into, which is coincidentally exactly the way I like it.

The press conference was helmed by Malaysian government officials and the organizers of the music festival. Future Music is coming to Malaysia in a very big way and will most likely be the biggest dance festival to hit the Southeast Asian region, which is no small feat. They’re expecting 40,000 people to attend the event which will be held at their formula 1 race track.

I knew that: a) it was a dance music festival, b) it was going to be big, and c) famous people I had only been able to enjoy in music videos and recorded digital audio were going to perform live for my viewing pleasure. You really don’t need to know much else.

The Brisbane show looked like it was going to be nothing short of epic, the headliners included gargantuan names on the dance scene including the Swedish House Mafia, Tiny Tempeh, Fatboy Slim, Aphex Twin, New Order, Skrillex, the Wombats, Paul Van Dyk, Gym Class Heroes, Die Antwoord, Azari & III, the Stafford Brothers, the list goes on and on and on.

Shortly after my arrival in Brisbane, the PR company that had flown me over for the purpose of promoting the festival’s last leg in Kuala Lumpur held a press conference and I was able to get a bigger picture of what was really going on. When you get a random email for a free trip to see a music festival including hotel and airfare, you can’t help but assume that it might be an elaborate scheme by an illegal kidney harvesting front. The press conference dispelled those fears.

On the way to the show, clouds were seen ominously overhead and rain was feared throughout the drive. You could see throngs of young people walking, like a pilgrimage to some sort of promised land. First you’d see one or two but as we got closer, larger groups formed, all walking in the same direction as we were driving. Then the rain came. That didn’t stop anybody. They marched on, determined to

Arriving at the horse race track used for the venue, you could see the giant stages organized by the stands and in the middle of the oval course. Two huge stages protruded into the sky and rivaled the race track’s seating area in size, seemingly competing for the sky. The roar of the crowd within was tremendous and translated into a low roar from a distance. You couldn’t help the adrenaline coursing into your veins. It sounded like this was going to be huge and a slight bit of apprehension fused with eagerness washed over me in an awesome wave. Right as I walked in, clouds parted, the sky was clear and I jump right into it. The first show I marched to was to see Skrillex, which was way on the other side of the venue that they had fenced off for the festival. You could see throngs of people, more people than you could possibly guestimate, walking in all directions. The organizers clearly had a good idea of how to set up the layout of the venue, with two wide bridges over the tracks between the two main stages. In between the two sides were various smaller stages that included massive indoor tents and a foam party the size of most mega clubs. This was some sort of dance eden, it seemed like whatever you were into, you could find some place in this festival to get moving no matter what your tastes were.

indie rock of the Wombats, it did indeed seem like just about anything you could stomp your feet to was represented. I’m not going to bore you readers with how much fun I had; enjoying great music is a personal thing, one that should be enjoyed at a giant festival, where the crowd’s energy seems to permeate through the air, at least once in a lifetime. Preferably many times. If you’re in the Southeast Asian region, the Future show in Malaysia is about as good a deal as it gets. It’s more than economical to hop on an Air Asia ticket to Kuala Lumpur for the show. And with a line-up that includes Chemical Brothers, Tinie Tempah, Chase & Status, The Wombats, Pendulum, Grandmaster Flash, Sneaky Sound System, Cosmic Gate, Alex Metric, Azari & III, and The Stafford Brothers along with a plethora of local and regional up and comers, this is the definitive Southeast Asian dance experience and possibly the one to go to in all of Asia. The organizers are just so legit, from the experience at the Brisbane show; they pretty much provided everything as advertised. Plus the Malaysia show is right next to the airport which means there are zero noise restrictions. That translates into a booming amount of sound being pumped out from the world’s premiere acts in dance music. So head out there today, seriously. Like, book your ticket now. The show is on March 17! Unlocking the Arts for All Young People

E

arly engagement with the arts has a positive impact on young people: raising aspirations, increasing confidence, improving communication skills and unlocking creativity. That is why Abrakadoodle, an American award-winning art and creativity program is franchised here in Jakarta. The main goal is to explore the creative art of a child, one at a time, so the positive impacts mentioned above can be accomplished. The imaginative Abrakadoodle art education curriculum was developed by artists and educators and exceeds the national standards for visual arts education in the United States.

www.beatmag.com

Teachers also plays an important factor, where one teacher only has 6-10 students, so they can pay close attention to every one of the students. Teachers are trained to teach with the curriculum available. Also, teachers have to inspire children, as oppose telling children what to do and giving them strict boundaries in terms

of creativity. Before all that, teachers applying for the job must have experience in teaching children from age 2-12 years old. Abrakadoodle has 1,200 creative art lessons. That is why every child enrolled there will have an introduction and receive new learning experiences every single time they enter class. Other than art classes, Abrakadoodle is also offering art camps and art parties. Art camps include up to fifteen hours of lessons, activities, games, music and more, offered during summer vacation or other school breaks at the school and community locations. Whereas an art party is a great way to introduce Abrakadoodle to friends and families with a bunch of popular themes that children can choose from and be creative. Don’t you want your kids to be artsy-fartsy and creative? No doubt, Abrakadoodle will bring out all the inner-creativity your kid has! (Dini Siregar)

The Black Keys el camino

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

If Ohio duo Dan Auerbach (guitars) and Patrick Carney (drums) have taught us anything about rummaging though the golden age of the American music hamper, it’s that unwavering consistency and an earnest appreciation for straight up raw rock n soul goes a long way. As far as ten years and seven critically acclaimed studio albums in fact, beginning with Rubber Factory back in 2004 and currently blasting out of the nearest Midwest saloon bar jukebox in the form of El Camino. Judging by the outpouring of critical and public acclaim that has been flung their way, it would seem that The Black Keys really haven’t put a foot wrong, and it only takes a cursory listen through the 11 tracks of El Camino to see that they’ve pretty much nailed it again with a tight, fast-paced collection of upbeat little gems. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, the album rattles by with a minimum of fuss, and feels as well polished as your mum’s best silver – thanks in no small part to super producer Danger Mouse at the helm. Opening track Lonely Boy wastes no time in getting right to the heart of the matter, with a sucker punch hook and instantly singable chorus line that is guaranteed to awaken your inner air guitarist. Foot-stomping Northern soul inspired Dead and Gone paves the way for album standout Gold on the Ceiling, complete with spangly Wurlitzer and retro hand claps. From here on out the formula remains steadfast with further standouts Run Right Back and Sister ensuring even the most ADD afflicted listeners won’t be tempted to skip forward. Only on a very few rare occasions does it seem as if the concentration has lapsed momentarily (see acoustic intro to Little Black Submarines) but it’s never long before the next catchy chorus or blistering riff kicks in and it’s all on again. Simply put, The Black Keys work with a minimum of fuss and a wealth of ideas to produce the richest, fattest, coolest music around, and El Camino is a shining example of this. Get it now – ‘nuff said. Dan Ashcroft

A Short Chat with Aning Katamsi

Her love of classical music was inspired by her late mother: Pranawengrum Katamsi. “My mother was the first teacher I ever had. Thanks to her, classical music became something that I really loved. After years of studying vocals and piano, I decided to choose this path as a life career,” Aning Katamsi said to TBJ recently. Indonesia saw her first debut in 1985 at the Radio and TV Star championship. Since then, she has received many offers to perform at TVRI. Later, Aning decided to continue her study further with famed Indonesian soprano: Catharina Leimena, who introduced her to Western classical music. With this study, Aning Katamsi’s capability as a singer evolved. Music types such as seriosa (Indonesian classical music) to art songs and even opera are now part of her repertoires. Most Indonesian classical music lovers and critics agree that Aning Katamsi possesses a beautiful and bright timbre in her voice. This natural talent is also supported with impeccable technique and voice articulation, placing Aning Katamsi at the forefront of our classical music world. The Beat Jakarta had a quick conversation with Aning Katamsi recently and she told us about her current project taking the Paragita Choir to participate at the Bela Bartok Choir Competition in Debrecen, Hungary this coming July 2012. “I am so happy that we have been accepted to join this competition. Our strategy to win this place was by auditioning the right singers and practicing very hard four times a week. It is very

important to master all songs that we are going to perform. To join this competition we have to sing more than just good. We have to sing great!” The Bela Bartok Choir Competition is one of the prestigious international choir competitions of the world. Aside from singing Bela Bartok’s compositions for this competition, the Paragita Choir lead by Aning Katamsi will also perform songs from some other great classical composers such as Eric Whitacre, Pawel Lukaszewski, Zoltan Kodaly and Morten Lauridsen. Indonesia has so many great talents when it comes to music and singing, including classical music. Aning agrees with this adding that the situation is already much better compared to 10 years ago, though it may not be as fast as other neighbouring countries. Furthermore, she added that what we do here is still based on each individuals passion to progress the classical music scene in Indonesia. Without the proper support like an international standard opera house and government attention on the arts in general, classical music in Indonesia will have a slow development. As a person who claims not to have long future plans, Aning Katamsi is planning to do more Indonesian art song concerts and perhaps publish a song book on that theme as well. But for the time being, she would like to focus on the education world and to share her knowledge on piano and vocal. Aning Katamsi leaves us with a couple of tips on becoming a great soprano, one being, to keep on learning and practicing. Always increase your capability, even when you are already a pro. Last but not least, take good care of your instrument: your voice, by having a healthy lifestyle.

o choose to be a professional classical singer is perhaps something that most children will not consider when they are growing up. However, for Aning Katamsi it was a life calling. For over 25 years, Aning Katamsi has dedicated herself to be one of Indonesia’s best sopranos.

OTEL LOBBY

No typo there. Come inside Otel Lobby and have a pleasant ‘stay’ and a wonderful meal.

L

ocated at Epicentrum Rasuna, Kuningan, this new gastro pub has been creating quite a good buzz amongst Jakarta’s food lovers. The name itself is more a playful way of saying that this is, a casual place with none of the stuffy hotel image.

www.beatmag.com

When you step inside Otel Lobby, you’ll be greeted by a big reception desk and a stack of Louis Vuitton bags resting on a luggage trolley. But our attention was more fixed on the gorgeous chandelier hanging on the ceiling and a classic black and white movie constantly screened on the wall adds a nostalgic touch. The interior is dominated by the color black, nicely accented with the dark wood of the furniture. Simply gorgeous. The masterminds behind this new restaurant are two beautiful ladies: Maya Aldy, the head chef and coowner, and Gaby Bakrie, a restaurateur, publisher and humanitarian. This dazzling duo simply wanted to create an exceptional eatery which serves good food, good drinks, and a cozy place to have a good time with your friends and family with excellent service. And you know that you’re somewhere special when everything on the menu is made entirely from scratch. It speaks volumes about the thoughtfulness and quality put into their cuisine. The decision of incorporating local ingredients (mostly the vegetables) into their dishes is a great thing. Otel Lobby hopes that the mutual partnership with local farmers will help boost the awareness of the quality of Indonesia’s produce.

Up next, a trio of mains that are simply splendid. A pasta dish called the Squid Ink Malfatti (55k small, 85k regular) made it to our table. Malfatti means “poorly made”, a reference to the odd shapes of the pasta. But there’s nothing poor about this dish. It’s a delectable blend of calamari with chili, cooked in squid ink. Visually, it is something to behold; a nice juxtaposition of the pasta’s dark color with the white of the squid and the red of the chili. This is definitely one dish to remember. We also ordered another seafood item, the Pan Roasted Salmon (85k); succulent salmon with avocado mousseline, orange sauce and kimchi. Yes, kimchi!

And for the carnivore in you, the Bruised Short Rib (145k) will surely satisfy. One thing worth mentioning about this dish is the cauliflower puree that was a welcomed substitute for the regular mashed potato.Yummy. A dessert called Lemon and Pear Soufflé (35k) ended our dining experience on a (sweet) high, but how can we not mention their superb cocktail concoctions? Leave it to Otel Lobby’s master mixologist, Ben Browning, to blow you away. Go for the Velvet Mojito (89k); a cool mixture of light rum, mint, lime, and velvet meringue. But the masterpiece here, we think, is the Herb ‘n’ Bourbon (89k); a mix of Jim Beam, rosemary, mint, basil, fresh orange, strawberry, honey, and a dash of Angostura Bitter, served over ice. We definitely had a great time here. Kudos to the chef and bartender who came up with their fantastic creations! Check in at Otel Lobby. This is one highly recommended place. (Budi Iskandar)

Well, let’s get into the food. We started our culinary journey with the Soy Marinated Maguro (75k); slices of fresh tuna topped with pickled beets, pieces of bone marrow, and toasted bread. The bone marrow truly adds a pleasant taste and texture to this appetizer.

PANTRYNETTE

A cute little café that is fast becoming a crowd pleaser.

www.beatmag.com

P

antrynette is situated in one of the new shophouses on Jalan Karang Tengah in the Lebak Bulus area of South Jakarta. A little off the beaten track maybe, but we’ve been hearing a lot of good things about this place. The restaurant is managed by the same people who own the popular Gorjes Hair Salon, and sure enough, their newest branch is located on the top floor. The décor here is decidedly pretty. The interior is dominated by the white colored furniture and wall paneling, with some touches of light green on some chairs and parts of the walls. The knick knacks on the cabinets and framed photos on the wall add a certain homey feel. All in all, it’s very casual and comfy. Pantrynette serves a hearty mix of classic café fare and Indonesian favorites. Real down-to-earth food.We visited them recently, and wanted to have a taste of their cooking. We began with the Bitterballen (22k); a typical savory Dutch snack, they are basically deep fried, breadcrumb battered balls with ragout filling. And with a side of mustard as a dip, this is one very popular appetizer here. The Big Breakfast (40k) is also a well-liked dish. A plate of French

toast, sausage, sautéed mushroom, egg, and tomato that will start your day in the right way. Don’t get us wrong, though; you’ll be content with this simple yet tasty dish at any time of day! Up next is the Spaghetti Aglio Olio (30k). The al dente spaghetti is cooked with lightly sautéed garlic in olive oil, garnished with chili flakes, and generously topped with cheese. If you’re more into local food, try the Mie Ayam Jamur (23k) or flour noodles with a good helping of seasoned chicken and mushroom with some lettuce. The bowl of soup and meatballs that just brings it all home. We also want to point out the jars of pickles on the table. One is the regular jar of pickled cucumber, carrots, and shallots. The other one though, packs quite a punch with the addition of sliced chilies. And this local type of salsa is a big hit among Pantrynette’s patrons! It’s especially good to go with your local dishes. Another notable dish here is the Asem-Asem Buntut (23k); a sour and spicy beef oxtail soup.

And we mean, exceptionally hot! The herbs and spices blend very nicely with the oxtail, but the chilies really give it a good kick. If you’re into spicy food, you’ll love this dish! They also have Pancakes and Crepe dishes (25k) for your sweet tooth. For drinks, the Lychee Iced Tea (22k) is very refreshing. And the Wedang Jahe (22k) - a pot of Javanese hot ginger drink, and Hot Caramel Latte (26k) are great for after your meal. The coffee here is particularly good. For a smallish, unassuming eatery, it’s really nice to see that they put special care into the food and we liked the good quality of the ingredients very much. With its relaxed feel and easy weekend vibe, Pantrynette is a good choice for a laid back afternoon of interesting company and casual food. (Budi Iskandar)

Nikeeta Lakhiani Nikoo | Fashion Designer

www.beatmag.com

‘Only great minds can afford a simple style’ In a booming Megalopolis, much like the one we find ourselves in, countless hours are spent working, networking and socializing. Jakarta is fast becoming both the business and fashion hub in Southeast Asia and somewhere in the middle of this ever evolving hustle and bustle there are Individuals whose artistic drive adds fuel to fire to the nations creative transformation. One such individual is Nikeeta Lakhiani, a laid back city girl who founded ‘Nikoo’ a brand committed to adding a much needed chic to city, one outfit at a time.

Describe the Nikoo brand for us. Well, this is something I found out a while after I decided to call my brand Nikoo. The word translates to beautiful in the Iranian language, a world apart but who would’ve thought? The purpose of this brand is to allow women to be able to pick up a beautiful, stylish piece of clothing with a quality equivalent to any of the more popular brands out there without having to pay through their noses. In other words, Nikoo is a very affordable way to make a fashion statement. The fact of the matter is we all want to look and feel good without it having to cost a small fortune. The idea behind the brand is that it has a very ‘street’ essence about it, meaning it’s an edgy line with an elegant taste of feminism. So it specifically caters to women? Yes it does. That is my target market, mainly because being a women myself I understand exactly what other women look for in their clothing choices. This understanding enables me to create a collection that is well rounded and provides everything from comfort to quality for the fashion savvy ladies out there. What sort of creative process do you go through and where do you draw your inspiration from? The mood board is possibly the most prominent part of my creative process. It’s where I lay out my ideas from colors, textures, fabrics and images. Once I feel like I’m getting the right

vibes from the idea I start designing and so on. My inspiration definitely comes from travelling and experiencing different cultures, simply because I come to connect with a different play on colors, fabrics and styles and I take these things and use them as a creative springboard to produce unique and flavorful designs. How Important is fashion for a city? It’s very important. Adding to all the elements of a great city like its buildings, parks and roadways, fashion adds a dimension to the individuals who operate day in and day out in the city. Good looking and feeling people equal improved city vibes On a scale on 1 to 10 how do you rate Jakarta in a fashion sense? I’d give the locals a seven. The city is quite fashionable in a very basic way, they think that splurging on designer or expensive brands makes them fashionable and it does to an extent, but personally I think when an individual can come out with looking exceptional by mixing and matching colors and styles, that’s when they are nearing a ten on a fashion sense. But in saying all that, I think we’ve got great potential and we are fashionable. To end this, where can we find your collection and what’s next for Nikoo? We’ve just recently celebrated our one year anniversary and launched a new collection to mark it and I’m happy with the end product. Now I just have to get ready for the next collection, keep experimenting and creating to able to cement Nikoo in the heart of the fashion Industry in Jakarta and beyond hopefully. You get can your hands on Nikoo in the Goods Dept if you’re in Jakarta or Widely Project for those in Bandung. You can also go on www.laavaa. com which will have Nikoo products starting April. Also follow us on facebook : nikooatelier & Twitter: @nikooatelier for updates. [Sahil Punjabi]

Nikeeta tell us about yourself First of all, I’m a downright city girl who enjoys the vibrant social scene in the capital and I like being out and about soaking in all that the city and it’s people have to offer. Growing up I’ve always loved the arts, something as simple as bringing life to an empty canvas armed with a brush and a few basic colors is one of the most soothing and refreshing thing anyone can do. So anyway, I combined my basic understanding of art, paired it up with my passion for fashion and birthed Nikoo a fashion forward endeavor to spice up the city’s style.

5 Beauty Tricks Unusual

The beauty tricks we are going to share are somewhat unusual because they require applying stuff that is not supposed to be on your face (eye drops/ deodorant). But hey, if it works, saves you time, and adds value to your beauty and skin care products, why not?

1

We may have a double-chin laughter emoticon [note: it looks like this =)))], but to have a double-chin in real life? Who wants that? Well, you can’t fight gravity and age, so it’s often inevitable. But when you’re preparing yourself for a big event and desperately need to reduce a bit of that chin puffiness for a few hours, try caffeine-rich cellulite creams. Caffeine acts as a diuretic and sucks the water right out of the puffy zone. Apply the cream on your jaw line, and enjoy having your chin de-puff noticeably for three to four hours.

www.beatmag.com

I hate sweating during special occasions, but what’s more annoying is when I sweat on my face. Really, it just ruins everything, from my mood to my makeup. So how do you keep your face sweat free? Well, how do you keep your armpits sweat free? Yes, with antiperspirant deodorant. Before applying makeup, use a foundation brush to apply thin layers of clear, unscented deodorant on your face parts with the most sweat glands—upper lip and hairline. Thanks to the antiperspirant ingredient, deodorant base will keep your face shine-free.

3

2

The key of avoiding cakey makeup is, of course, by not having so many layers of foundation, concealers, and powder. But when we have broken capillaries, red acne, or just an allover uneven redness on your face, we are always tempted to pile on foundation. The quick solution is by applying nasal spray or eye drops such as Visine. Nasal sprays and eye drops are vasoconstrictors, which work like a topical steroid to reduce redness. Since it also shrinks blood vessels, products of this type helps reduce puffiness and under eye circles as well. With no redness on your face, there’s no need to pile up those concealer!

4

Using non-primers as primers! The first favorite brand is Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel. No, this is not that Monistat product for yeast infections. The Soothing Care line is a body care line that produces moisturizers, itch relief, body powder, and the like. Although it’s not a primer, the Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel contains Dimethicone (which is similar to silicone) as the active ingredient. It also contains Vitamin E and aloe, and it’s fragrance-free and formulated to let skin ‘breathe’. The verdict? The gel goes on evenly, it’s non-greasy, smooths pores, and works well with everything from tinted moisturizers to regular foundations. But the biggest bonus is that it’s cheaper than the usual branded primer. Score! Another alternative primer is La Roche Posay Cicaplast. This product is actually formulated to help reconstruct skin’s texture, which makes it a favorite for post-surgery patients. On the flipside, it’s great for those who are looking for a primer that double-functions as a skin texture enhancer. Okay, so the product stimulates new cells and it’s also antibacterial. But how does it act as a primer? Surprisingly good. Although it has silicones in it, the consistency is lighter and creamier than most other primers. However, as it has no oil control, it works better on dry and normal skin. So if you’re looking for a primer substitute that is designed towards skin care and not makeup, this is for you. The fact that it acts like a foundation primer is a bonus!

Remember: some of above products were not developed for use on facial skin, so they may cause reactions.Test it on a small patch of your skin first before you start fully applying.

A lot of us spray water on our face after getting our makeup done. It’s a simple but essential final touch-up to achieve that dewy look. But if your skin is very dry, or if you live in a dry area, try this Hollywood celebrity trick: after applying all of your makeup, take a 10-minute hot bath or shower. Of course, don’t get your neck and face wet! The steam from the hot water sets makeup, and the moisture will make skin look plump, fresh, and dewy. It takes away the powdery look of powders, giving your skin a glow. Not the most practical way, but if it’s a celebs’ favorite, there’s gotta be some truth in it.

was waiting impatiently for the Lanvin Spring/Summer 2012 presentation, because I already had the invitation from more than a week prior. I couldn’t wait to see what we were going to find at this season’s presentation. It was really windy that day, and not so surprisingly, a busy day for the beat team, as everything seemed to happen on the same day. But when we got to Bistro Boulevard, the weather turned to a very nice cool temperature. The dim lights of the place accentuated the classic aura of Lanvin and we got to see renowned Lanvin sketch illustrations being placed everywhere on the venue.

What did I get from the presentation? I think these are the five things that I will be paying close attention to this season. 1. Black and taupe will remain a classic in your wardrobe That is why you should never doubt yourself whether it’s a waste buying another black and taupe. Especially taupe! Who needs beige when you can settle with taupe. 2. Go with solid bright hues to steal the limelight Staying with solid colours make it easier to deal with bright hues. It immediately grabs attention because the colour of the outfit in itself is a scene stealer. Make everything else simple; shoes, bags and accessories. 3. Tweed can rock your outfit too It’s easy to fall in love with tweed, it’s so iconic that everyone needs to have at least one tweed blazer in their lifetime. But tweed doesn’t need to be always business like. Pair it with a shirt or a statement necklace to make it more lovable. We’re so in love with that heart shaped necklace! 4. Trust the bag to complete your look (and probably shoes too) 5. White doesn’t always have to be boring. Like a t-shirt written ‘Married in the Sun’ made from sequins. Especially in the form of a wedding gown, from Lanvin, it can blow your mind.

Now – March 21 Inspired by the soothing and lush views of the Balinese ‘sawah’, Theo Zantman, a Netherlands-based artist put on this exhibition to reveal the beauty of the basic Balinese concept of the sawah and sheds a whole new creative light on them with interesting plays on colors and contours. Opened by the Famous Asmirandah, the exhibition has gathered a lot of interest from the public. Don’t miss out. DUTA FINE ARTS FOUNDATION, Jl. Kemang Utara 55A Jakarta, Indonesia 12730

Fang Jilun, The Breakthrough Now – April 5th Considered a founding father of the China-based cynical realist style, Fang Lijun, a Beijing based artist brings his work to the archipelago and his artwork does create a vivid picture of the disenchanted and rebellious days of old China. His work also conjures images of the disillusioned Chinese youth drawing from memories of Tianamen square massacres to laborers for the white man in today’s world. CP Foundation Jl. Now – April 7th A unique collaboration between these two art movements resulting in art works that really wake the senses. Kopi Keliling is famous for its coffee-driven and inspired artworks, they even use coffee as a material to create art. Just like that shot of espresso, this partnership is sure to jolt your system back up. Inkubator Asia & Kope Keliling Jalan Wijaya No 39. Jakarta Selatan.

Surprisingly stencil art is to many a very therapeutic way of creating art. They describe the cutting work and attention to detail as a medium that immerses them into the art itself allowing it to take and come to life. The Jakarta Stencil art scene is not new, but it has surfaced and gathered a lot of attention over the past year.

vibe of the ‘Gardu House’ artspace making the whole experience well worth it.

This exhibition was an ode to local and international artist whose experiences with this art form reveal themselves unmistakably through their work. The cultural mix combined of artists from Poland, Germany, Argentina and Indonesia amongst others did wonders to the

Gardu House itself was built by street artists to house other edgy characters like themselves to create and explore and the people responsible for this event are already plotting their exhibitions. Gear up Jakarta and get your stencils on.

The artist represented hope that the stencil art culture will catch on with the nation’s youth and hopefully encourage them to let loose their creative powers and even use the empty walls of this city as a canvas to build on.

Scott Thompson set off to run from Bali to Jakarta, raising money for social and health education for Indonesian children last week. He started from Ngurah Rai Airport on Thursday morning at 7am, and will finish in Jakarta on 1 April 2012. Scott will traverse 30 cities in five provinces with a distance of 1250 kilometers. His fundraising has already received a positive response from the public, and has already collected donations amounting to Rp 3.3 billion. That support came from sponsors and donors, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Scott, a former professional rugby player, will be running for nearly a month. Scott has been living in Indonesia for nine years and before setting off acknowledged that this feat will be very challenging. “It’s hard, but I’ll try,” Scott said at a news conference at Bali Mandira Hotel, Jl Padma, Legian, Kuta before setting off. He said that he was doing this from his own initiative. “I want to help the children of Indonesia,” he said. The money raised will go to two groups; Mary’s Cancer Kiddies, which provides cancer treatment for children, and the Cinta Anak Bangsa Foundation (YCAB), which provides children with educational assistance. According to the BPS, the number of poor in Indonesia is high at around 30.02 million people. The five provinces that Scott will pass there is a total of 15.6 million poor people with the highest percentage of residents in Central Java (15.67%), East Java (14.23%), West Java (10.65%), Bali (4.20%) and Jakarta (3.75%). Previously, Scott ran 250 kilometers in the Sahara desert, Africa, raising funds for the Nation Children’s Foundation of Love (YCAB) and Mary’s Cancer Kiddies (MCK). Hu’u at Dragonfly for Nyepi It’s that time of year again when Nyepi takes over the island of Bali and Hu’u Bar makes an exodus to the Big Durian to keep the fire lit on the Bali party scene. In environmental news, the Indonesian government is expected to register Bali’s unique Mola-mola or ‘Sunfish’ population in the list of protected marine animals.According to director of the Coral Triangle Centre (CTC) Marten Welly, studies show that the waters around Nusa Penida are unique in their ability to support large numbers of this otherwise rare marine animal. Sunfish come to the surface of the ocean between July and September every year, and tourists and divers come from all over the world to witness these majestic creatures. However, according to a spokesperson for the Bali Tourism Office, the government will also regulate tourism to Nusa Penida to make sure that too many visitors do not adversely affect the Sunfish habitat.Protection must also be done to maintain the cleanliness of the marine environment,” added Welly at a conference in Denpasar yesterday. For the appetizer I’m won over by the interestingly named apocalypse now spring roll (65k++), which is stuffed with marinated prawns, shredded chicken, pork, duck, mixed lettuce, fresh mint leaf, coriander and bean sprouts served with a duo of sweet plum jam & hot chili vinegar dip. Despite being a pretty generous starter, it’s not long before I’m licking the plate clean and ready for a main, which comes in the form of braised boneless beef short ribs (158k++) with truffle crushed potatoes, roasted carrots, glazed shallots and a shiraz wine reduction. eavy rain and huge wind made the outdoor stage kinda expendable and the event was forced to move downstairs to the woobar. People squeezed into the venue but that didn’t stop them from having fun, maybe even gave them an excuse to have more. They enjoyed the canapÊs, sipped drinks and danced to Hedkandi tunes. DJ Andy Daniels and Dean Oram entertained the crowd with their music and there were also a few glamorous dancers that shook the crowed into a frenzy. A massive fireworks show at 8.30pm made the festivities even more pronounced.
