Jakarta was peaceful over the recent long weekend with a lot of people away and the streets less busy than normal. I was flying out the day of one of the first big demos last week and everyone I spoke to was suggesting I should leave early. “Big demo today, you have to get moving,” everybody I spoke to more or less said. So, I packed early and charged out of the apartment, hailing a cab and getting on the road as fast as I could. The strange and I must say beautiful thing was that the roads were clearer than I had ever seen at midday before. The demo had had the opposite effect by keeping everyone off the road. That was one fast trip to the airport. On the day of the fuel vote last Friday it was a lot different of course, but sometimes you can make it through town in a flash if you time it well. In this edition our correspondent JR takes to the streets of Jakarta to try every available form of public transport to find the pros and cons of each. He reports back with his findings which are basically summed up in the old adage, ‘Horses for courses, mate.’ It may be tough at times but JR’s insightful and somewhat tongue in cheek observations may be of help in getting you around. We would like to welcome the visiting footballers from all over the region here for the Viking Cup that kicks off next Friday in Jakarta. Since they will be receiving a copy of the beat magazine in their welcome bag, we hope they all have a great time in Jakarta and that folks around town offer them every assistance on their outings. There are plenty of shows on around town in the next couple of weeks. Check the Whats On and HereNow sections inside to help make your way through it.

The band that hails from Boston, was formed in 1985 and was previously known as Majesty and consisted of John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy while they studied their musicology at Berklee College. But fortunately for all them metal heads out there, they dropped out and decided to focus intensively on the band they finally renamed Dream Theater. If you already knew this, you’re in luck because this progressive metal band will visit Jakarta. This concert will be a stop in their world tour to promote their new album, A Dramatic Turn of Events, which was launched last year. nkotbsb coming to jakarta Do you remember the 80s boyband called New Kids On The Block? A group from Boston that was formed by Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Danny Wood and Joe McIntyre, hit the big lights with the massive success of their album Hangin’ Tough that was released in 1988. Since then NKOTB became the benchmark for high quality boyband music and they performed in Jakarta just a few years ago. Meanwhile, the Backstreet Boys (BSB) come from the next generation of boy band which has also achieved a fair bit of tween super stardom. Both bands have been kicking back for some time but have finally come back and have made a major breakthrough by joining both groups together. They are now called NKOTBSB. These two different generation boy bands will perform at Jakarta on June 1 at MEIS, Ancol.

Formed since 1992, this music group consists of two violinists and brothers Eric and Olivier Slabiak. Their music sounds calm, peaceful and full of love but it’s also very complex. They play their music fast, and sometimes they even seem rough and wild. Les Yeux Noirs offers a different musicality because they are influenced by music from many parts of the world from Hungary to Armenia, and also has Gypsy and Klezmer elements with a touch of jazzy tunes. During their 19 years of its existence, Les Yeux Noirs has already performed 1300 concerts and appeared in many prestigious music events in Europe. They will perform in Jakarta, at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta on April 18 at 8.30 pm.

tim knol & koes plus Koes Plus is an Indonesian music legend. The band was formed in Jakarta in 1969 as the evolution of the group Koes Bersaudara. They are considered the pioneers of Indonesian pop music and rock and roll with the style that’s often had them called Indonesia’s Beatles. This time, with only one original member remaining, they are still performing on stage. Meanwhile, from the international stage, the band hailed by the international press as Americana music, Tim Knol, which they hail as the most successful Dutch musician during the last twenty years. The 22-year-old singer who’s also a song writer just released his second album, Days, a sequel of his debut album that was successful in 2010. These two big bands will perform a free concert at Taman Fatahillah, to re-recall the rock and roll era on Sunday afternoon April 15 at 2pm.

Yes is a band hailing from England that was formed in 1968 by Chris Squire. The band is famous for its progressive and art rock music has its first formation that consisted of Squire, Jon Anderson, Peter Banks, Tony Kanye, and Bill Brufford. But over time, the band’s formation changed and the latest incarnation is Chris Squire, Alan White, Geoff Downes, and Steve Howe. This legendary band has succeeded in selling tens of millions of copies of albums and CDs around the world. The good news for the Yes fans is that the group that had a major hit single called ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’ back in 1983, will perform in Jakarta. The special concert to celebrate 44th anniversary of their success in the world music scene will be held on Tuesday April 24 at 4th floor Ballroom of The Ritz Carlton Pacific Place, Jakarta, at 7pm.

Frolicking in the BBQ Sun

E

The sixth edition of the TBJ & Lex Sunday Sunset Party and Barbeque was another pleasant afternoon and evening in the Jakarta sun, frolicking on the imaginary beach of Liquid Exchange with a bunch of locals and expats along for the ride. The free beers and scrumptious BBQ grilled up this time by Lex’s very own Head Chef, Robi, had the guests enthralled and salivating in anticipation. While some of the younger punters were bumping around to the deep sounds of DJ Nate, the regulars were swinging toward the staple up-tempo served up from regular Mr. Riski Lex. It was a good one, pretty casual and we had some fun. Thanks to the sponsors and we’ll see you next time for the best feed this side of sunset.

u’u Bar took on the big smoke last Saturday night with their second ‘One Night in Jakarta’ show at Dragonfly Jakarta.

Winging in from Bali and staying at the Aston Rasuna, the crew met for dinner at Bluegrass in Epiwalk Kuningan before heading to the fabled turf of Jakarta’s number one night club, Dragonfly. The venue packs them in on Saturday nights without fail and since it was Nyepi the day before, people from Bali were in town en force and most were heading for Dragonfly. The entourage arrived in two black SUVs ready for action and burst through the doors into the still almost empty club to begin the night. Bottles were opened, let the party begin! The tunes were smooth, first from the residents, both DF’s and hu’u’s, then the main act, and a man who’s come a long way in recent months, returning after a few years in KL to Bali, and now headlining at Dragonfly. No wonder DJ Glynn Tandy had a smile from ear to ear after the first track was laid down as the night began in earnest. But he wasn’t alone, the hu’u crew were right behind and up on the decks with him. Chef PM was pulling all his tricks out of the bag rousing the crowd to Bali heights with aid from MC Gooze, Dimas and Janne. The clincher was the hu’u bandanas thrown from the DJ booth and wrapped around foreheads in true Kuta style. I don’t think they had seen anything like that before in the hallowed land of the dragon. The place filled after midnight and kept on kicking till very late. Once again hu’u had made its mark on the Big Durian.

ndonesia is a maritime country, which makes the Batavia Marina a very appropriate place to visit. It is built in a historical area of Sunda Kelapa Port, where the influences of the outside world first entered to fuse with and enriched the local culture.

www.beatmag.com

Batavia Marina has colonial architecture that became one with the Old City’s (Kota Tua) atmosphere and the beautiful ocean view. The five-story building was built on a vast 10,000 square meter area. Every floor’s interior design reflects the rich and colorful culture and the long history of Indonesia. The Marco Polo Dining Hall is located on the first floor. A wide, private dining room with four VIP rooms (Atlantic, Pacific, Baltic and Adriatic), a bar, a pool table, cigar and wine lounge, ice cream and pastry shop, business and internet room, and the Commodore Room (a private meeting room). On the second floor, is a big hall called the Grand Baruna Banquet Hall is

available for parties, seminars, exhibitions, or other events. The Seaside Garden is a spot at the seashore, perfect for an outdoor barbecue and family gatherings. The dining and banquet halls and barbecue spots are common facilities in the establishment. But a cruise ship? Quicksilver, a giant catamaran cruise ship is docked at the pier every Sunday to take customers on an unforgettable cruise, inside the cruise ship there is entertainment such as games, magic shows, and dance shows by the Quicksilver dancers. On one of the Quicksilver programs, the Sunda Kelapa Dinner Cruise, a fantastic dinner menu is served for passengers aboard. First of all, a welcome-drink and snacks before the main event. After passing the beautiful dusk, passengers will enjoy the romantic night and live music, and definitely a buffet dinner complete with a wide choice of mouth-watering desserts. (Dini Siregar)

ith the media constantly displaying high-end western brands, people in Jakarta are now obsessed with imported products, starting from food and beverages to apparel and clothing. Maybe it’s time to take a step back, and value some stuff that the locals are coming up with these days. Indonesian consumers need to be persuaded to scrape away some of the westernized mentality to appreciate Indonesian creativity a little more, and especially from its youth. The first Indonesia Clothing Expo will be held this year to show off the capacity and the capability of the Indonesian people in producing great quality clothing. This event will push the creative minds of the Indonesian youth even further and hopefully to a productive state of mind. More than 150 indie clothing brands will be the center of attention, and 200 indie bands will be performing to accompany shoppers with endless music. And of course, visitors can find some great products amongst those hundreds of local sellers and maybe even some bargains. Local clothing including Stone Rebel Cloth, Grindwear, Torture Clothing, Rubber Inc. and so much more. For every event there is usually a theme, and for the first ever Indonesia Clothing Expo, the theme is “Save Orang Utan”, due to the decreasing population of Orangutans in its habitat to numbers that could lead to extinction. Hopefully, people will acknowledge the potential from great local products, and recognize that Indonesian stuff is no different from a lot of imports in every term and aspect of fashion and quality. Media Entrepreneur, Film Maker

While still busy doing the post-production of his upcoming movie, Erwin has already started working on a new book called “Rabbit versus Goliath” for a foreign publisher. Outside of his busy schedule, he spends his quality time with the ones he really loves: his wife and his dog.

Superman Is Dead since I used their songs for my movie soundtrack, and Chubby Checker.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Some Girls by the Rolling Stones and The

Grateful Dead by the Grateful Dead. I hosted a radio show called “Stones Hour” back in 1977 and always took my chance to tell the listeners about the saga of a legend named Brian Jones. Meanwhile Jerry Garcia mesmerized me in The Grateful Dead album.

What is your all-time favorite album? Why? Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The songs in this album seem to be destined as a requiem, as well as a symbol of pure love.

What was the worst record you ever purchased? MC Hammer, I guess!

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Jean Pierre Basquiat or Hugh Hefner hahaha...

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy? “The Dharma Bums” by Jack Kerouac. PS: I never borrow books from anyone, and I never lend any books to anyone, too!

What new movie should people see? Why? Well, my new movie, of course: Rumah di Seribu Ombak (A house of a thousand waves). Playing

at the cinema in August this year. I present the other side of Bali, rather than just a “bling” Bali like we usually see in commercials or magazines. This is something else, something different, but actually real, and sadly, based-on-a-true-story kind of thing. This movie is an adaptation of my novel with the same title, which I wrote when I was still in prison.

What song do you choose to start your weekend? “Sunday, Lovely Sunday” by Edson.

And album you choose to end your weekend? The Chrystal Method, especially their Vegas album.

‘Ojek’ ‘bajaj’ and the busway Transportation options in Jakarta are many and varied so take your pick

If you have one, are you still using your car as much as you used to?

www.beatmag.com

By the time you read this the chances are the government will have raised the price of fuel to try and keep a lid on the ballooning cost of the fuel subsidy due to recent rises in the price of crude oil on the world market amongst other things. Fuel in Indonesia is still among the cheapest in Southeast Asia but given the price sensitivity that seems to exist here, many will be thinking about leaving their car at home more often. Fear not, for there are many options available for journeys within the city, some of which you may never have seriously considered before. I’ve tried all of them and it’s very much a case of

horses for courses, depending on the length of your journey and the time of day you wish to travel. Two options are not on the list – helicopters and trains. Choppers are hideously expensive, and if you could afford to take one you’re unlikely to be affected by the higher cost of fuel. Trains are theoretically a good option for those who live on the routes they serve but the network is rather limited at present. An improved/new suburban rail/tram network might eventually prove to be the answer to much of Jakarta’s traffic congestion but for the moment trains are often not a feasible option and suffer from an image problem, perceived by many as suitable primarily for those in the lower tiers of the economic heap.

f e a t u r e

045

ojek

busway

So here are the other options, warts and all:

Shanks’s pony (walking)

Pros: For short journeys, completely reliable, often faster and a chance to observe the detail of everyday Jakarta life you’d miss if whisked past it in a motorised vehicle. Remember to walk at half your normal pace or you’ll overheat. Cons: You may get lost in the labyrinthine alleys of the capital if taking a shortcut but at least there’ll be many locals to keep you on the straight and narrow. You may fall down a hole in the road with no sign to warn you, and the filthy air of the metropolis will leave you with a sweaty, dirty face.

Busway

Pros: Where it has its own dedicated lane, the busway can be really fast. On Sudirman/Thamrin, route 1 can often be the quickest way from A to B. It’s also cheap and a chance to observe ‘real’ Jakartans on the go. Cons: When busy, there’s a high chance of getting pickpocketed so be careful where you put your valuables. The bus stops can get really stuffy, too, and the pushing and shoving when a bus arrives at peak times will test your patience to the limit.

‘Bajaj’ (motorised rickshaw)

Pros: These narrow, three-wheeled contraptions are ideal for short trips via the back doubles (jalan tikus) that are too small for most vehicles. The newer blue ones offer a smoother, more spacious ride and are faster. The older orange ones are being phased out so enjoy them while you can. Bajaj drivers are very knowledgeable about the areas in which they operate and can be a mine of information (and gossip!). Cons: Suspension on the older bajaj is primitive so be prepared for a bone-jarring ride. They are banned from many main roads in the city centre so drivers often have to take a circuitous route to get from one place to another.

‘Ojek’ (motorcycle taxi)

Pros: There has been an explosion in the number of ojek drivers plying their trade since credit to purchase motorbikes became much easier to obtain about 10 years ago. This works in your favour as it’s very much a buyer’s market when it comes to haggling over the fare. Ojeks offer great flexibility and can be the fastest way of getting around the city at peak times. Cons: Once aboard, you’re at the mercy of the driver, who may not be the safest thing on two wheels. The bike itself may be as dodgy as the driver so be choosy before you commit yourself. Sometimes an ojek can be more expensive than a taxi but may be worth it if your’e in a hurry and there’s gridlock all around ...

Taxi

Pros: Taxis provide a 24/7 service and (provided you choose a vehicle from a reputable firm) offer a comfortable and safe means of getting around. You can even read or send text messages from the comfort of the back seat. Cons: At the very first drop of rain Jakarta taxis seem to disappear from the face of the earth. Where they go to is still a mystery. You’re also at the mercy of the driver, who may be annoyingly chatty when you don’t wish to talk, or uncomfortably sullen when you wish to shoot the breeze a bit. If you’re a non-smoker, check before you commit yourself that the previous passenger has not been puffing away in the back seat. Whichever transportation option you choose, remember to haggle over the price at the start of the journey to avoid an argument later. Once a price is agreed the driver will stick to it. If it’s a taxi, make sure the driver uses the meter. Selamat jalan! (Jim Read)

Die Antwoord Ten$ion

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

How on earth did ‘out there’ music ever get ‘in there’ before the advent of the interweb and MyFace or Twit-tube? I shudder to think of all the true original weirdos/ geniuses (depends on where you stand) who have created groundbreaking music that never got heard en mass, and are now stuck back working behind the tills of the nearest Woolies dreaming up ways in which to brutally murder their boss. Fortunately for South African rap-rave mentalists Die Antwoord (and any supermarket managers in Cape Town), the digital age has well and truly cometh, and thanks to the viral phenomenon are now one of the top YouTube hits with their collection of unsettling videos and schizophrenic zef music (think blue eyeliner, bleached hair, sweat bands, cars with overly powerful sound systems… you know, the usual stuff). Essentially a duo comprising of Ninja (grimy bloke with missing/gold teeth) and YoLandi (female albino mental institution escapee?), it’s safe to say that Die Antwoord won’t appeal to everyone, but underneath the confrontational veneer there are moments of maturity that show there’s more to these two than meets the eye. After 60 seconds of what sounds like a Paul Simon B-side circa Graceland, album opener “Never Le Nkemise” wallops you round the head with a dose of rap dubstep that pretty much sets the tone for what’s to come. “I Fink U Freeky” then goes into overdrive, with Ninja and Yo-Landi trading off Afrikaans tinted rhyming flows that sound like a staple gun being fired into your ears. Other standout track “Fatty Boom Boom” lays down a rowdy Zulu drumbeat with even more implausibly hyperactive, high-pitched vocals dancing around over the top. I could go on and attempt to explain the other tracks but you probably get the picture by now (the album cover image of Yo-Landi eating a human heart is also a pretty good indicator). So do yourself a favour and load up a Die Antwoord vid on YouTube. Like it or loathe it we should all be thankful to the Internet gods for original geniuses/ weirdos like this. Dan Ashcroft

Easter Concert 2012 April 8 starting from 5pm onwards Aula Simfonia Jakarta For more information: +6221-6586 7808 or boxoffice@aulasimfoniajakarta.com Easter Concert by GKBJ Chamber Chorus Jakarta April 5 starting from 7.30pm onwards Graha Gepembri Jl. Boulevard Barat XV/4 Kelapa Gading Permai North Jakarta Free admission

Classical music culture is part of the church tradition and it makes them the front-runner in this field. Thus, music compositions from composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Handel to John Rutter will always get the most priorities. I personally call these church inspired compositions as “heavenly themed” music. This coming Easter is no exception. Aula Simfonia Jakarta concert series is back with Bach and Beethoven to present their Easter collection for this year. Like usual, the performance is grand and involving Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra as well as Jakarta Oratorio Society under the lead of Dr. Stephen Tong. It is not a surprised that they chose Bach’s Latin Mass in B minor to open the program, as it is one of the most famous “heavenly themed” repertoires to play during Easter. History stated that this frequently performed mass is Bach’s last work that he finished a year before his death. It is hailed as a monumental work of the late Baroque and it’s becoming one of Bach’s most renowned masses. Luckily, the music selected for the second half of the concert is leaning more to the popular taste and not another “heavenly themed” composition. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major op.

55, also known as the Eroica (Italian for heroic) is very enjoyable music to listen to. Through this composition, we are taken back to the glory days of late eighteenth century. This symphony is twice as long as Haydn’s or Mozart’s, but it covers more emotional ground. It’s often cited that this symphony is the beginning of the Romantic period in music. Interesting enough, this time Dr. Stephen Tong will share his conductor stage with Eunice Tong Holden. Graduating from Westminster Choir College of Rider University in New Jersey, Eunice is known as the associate conductor and chorus master of the Jakarta Oratorio Society. She is also known as an award-winning pianist who has been performing with famous choirs and orchestras from America and Europe. Her debut as associate conductor for Jakarta Oratorio Society was started in 2006. However if you are looking for a more traditional Easter concert experience at the church, then perhaps you should visit the Jakarta Christian Baptist Church (GKBJ) on April 5 for their annual Easter concert. Known as a church with great music ensembles and chamber choruses, they are planning to present you with an interesting “heavenly themed” program from composers such as Bach, Handel, William Byrd, Bizet to John Rutter. Penabur Children Chorus and solo guitarist player: Meilisa Hoesin are also invited as the guest stars at the concert. I have been to several church concerts in the past and they are actually really good. Its free admission and will surely transport you into a good Easter mood.

In

recent email communication with my editor here at TBJ, he asked if Jakarta could have more classical music to offer other then Bach, Beethoven, Handel and Mozart again. Unfortunately the best answer I could give was only “maybe”. Though our classical music scene has been developing more than ever, one of the most active practitioners is still the church.

YELLOW FIN sake bar & kitchen

www.beatmag.com

This sleek Japanese eating place is shaking up the local dining scene, and rightly so.

ellowfin Sake Bar and Kitchen is strategically located at the corner of Jalan Gunawarman and Jalan Senopati in the South of Jakarta. Since its stunning debut, it has gone from strength to strength and looking at the never ending crowd coming in, this is the new hip place to be in town.

We were there for a late lunch, and as we came in, the kitchen staff’s welcome greetings chimed in the air. Even well after the lunch hours, there were still a good number of customers comfortably still staying put. The place is just so comfortable; we could see why Yellowfin is fast becoming a crowd’s favorite for lunch, dinner, and beyond.

The concept here closely follows the lovely tavern-like restaurants in Japan.Wood dominates the interior, with a nice mix of dark and lightcolored timber. Yellowfin Sake Bar and Kitchen mixes the traditional Japanese décor with a sexy lounge vibe. This is the type of place you want to dine and lounge with a date or group of friends, and sip sake well into the night.

Now let’s talk about the food. We began with some Tori Kara Age (39k); chicken chunks deep fried in tempura batter with Kara Age sauce. It’s something simple, but hits the right spot. For a bit of a tasty twist, you can try the Salmon Pizza (55k); a tapas-like starter that is more Western than Japanese. Small crispy pizza doughs, topped with salmon, cheese, and a piece of jalapeño.

Another Yellowfin’s must-try brew is the Green Tea Limoncello (100k), a favorite of actor Lukman Sardi’s. It’s a potent mixture of Absolut vodka, skin of lemon, green tea, and simple syrup. Must-Watch: Women in These Movies!

By: @JohanJT

Anybody who still thinks that women aren’t worth the leading role in blockbuster movies should open their eyes to these wonderful women, both the characters they play and the actresses who play them in these movies. They may well be true biographies, fictional stories and fairy tales, but these chicks are worth that cinema ticket and popcorn bucket, look them up at www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

My Week with Marilyn Biography, Drama. Director: Simon Curtis. Writer: Adrian Hodges. Cast: Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, Julia Ormond, Judi Dench. Based on Colin Clark’s real diary when he met and fell in love with Marilyn Monroe during the shooting of the all-time classic “The Prince and the Showgirl” with Sir Laurence Olivier, this film is something every Marilyn fan will cherish and young audiences will enjoy its genuine romance. Another charmer in this film is Michelle Williams’ Oscar nominated performance as Marilyn Monroe with her legendary charm and seduction. Classic wardrobe and it’s charming to meet Marilyn!

The Lady Biography, Drama. Director: Luc Besson. Writer: Rebecca Frayn. Cast: Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, Jonathan Raggett, Jonathan Woodhouse, William Hope.

World renowned for her involvement in Burma’s democracy movement and her peaceful quest against a hostile regime for more than a decade, Aung San Suu Kyi is, after all still, a woman and wife at heart. This is exactly the main angle focused on by Rebecca Frayn when spending three years writing this film. She finally released it as an epic story by director Luc Besson on Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris. With Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis paired together, you can bet we will be intrigued by the political plot but touched more by the true love story.

Mirror Mirror Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy. Director: Tarsem Singh. Writers: Melissa Wallack, Jason Keller. Cast: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, Jordan Prentice. After The Cell, The Fall and Immortals, director Tarsem Singh is again about to put you in awe at the beauty of every single frame in his new flick, “Mirror Mirror”. This time it’s a bit different, the movie is adapted from a classic fairy tale “Snow White” made for adults in a darker yet more humorous rendition. Don’t expect a happily-ever-after love story, this one is more fun, packed with adventure and full of laughs!

[REC]3 Genesis Horror, Thriller. Writer & Director: Paco Plaza. Cast: Leticia Dolera, Javier Botet, Diego Martin. As one of the most successful action-horror franchise films with its genuine first-person handheld camera style, this third edition will serve as a prequel and decoder to reveal information hidden in the first two films (Rec and Rec 2). Still with a woman as its main protagonist, Carla (Leticia Dolera) in this prequel will take you on a dead-or-alive escape full of horror and gore. Bring a big bucket of popcorn just in case you need to hide behind it!

The Star Ingredients: Obviously it is hard to judge makeup colors from their ingredients. But the star here is of course the diamond powders I mentioned above that can make the colour pigmentation possible. You can also read the complete list of the ingredients from each of the shade on the label on the back of the packaging. Packaging and Formula: Every palette comes with five shades from the same tone or colour family with different finishes. It’s housed in a simple flip-top plastic packaging with see-through plastic lid so that you can see all the colours right away. I like the geometrical shape dividing the eyeshadows. The colours that are likely to be used more have a wider area whereas those that aren’t used as much come in a smaller area. It comes with a sponge tip applicator which is of normal size and the other side comes in one of those pointy sponge applicators which allows you to reach smaller areas – not that I use sponge applicators anyway, but they do come in handy in times of need.

At the back of the packaging you can see a sticker label which indicates the name of the product. When you peel off the sticker you’ll see another sticker label listing the ingredients. There are also instructions and a diagram on which shade goes to which side of your eyes. Really useful! The Verdict: This has got to be my favourite palette at the moment. Super affordable, very good colour payoff – every single one of the shades, and I have to say, the shade pairing on this palette is nicely done. The whole concept definitely reminds me of the Japanese drugstore eye shadow palette. From the packaging, name selection, colour selection to its finish. I love that you get everything in a palette. A lid colour, crease, inner corner of the eyes, highlighter and even a liner colour. They all come in very different finishes. From a sheer shimmer, to a more intense colour for the crease, and the glittery finish for the inner corner of the eyes. My favourite one is always the very intense glittery liner colour. I love to add it on top of my eyeliner to create more drama. Those without the glitter are very easy to blend. On the flip side, the glitters are very chunky. You could end up with some tiny glitter bits on the face. How much: Rp 98k

What We Need To Know About John Hardy

www.beatmag.com

What is John Hardy? The story of John Hardy jewelry started in 1975 when Canadian art student John Hardy moved to Bali and began studying local traditional jewelry-making techniques with a master artisan whose ancestors were goldsmiths among the island’s former royal courts. As he adapted these techniques to fresh and new designs, Hardy formed the John Hardy company in 1989.

Another attribute of John Hardy designs is the craftmanship put on the “back grill”, where cut work is etched on the inner surface of a piece of jewelry. The traditional Balinese carving technique or ukiran is employed in both abstract and figurative designs to create jewelry that tells a story. The back grill becomes like a secret story, ensuring the inside of the piece is just as beautiful as the outer surface.

In the early 1990s, John Hardy initiated its first sales relationships with two of the most prestigious department stores in the United States: Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. And by 1998, Guy Bedarida, a senior designer of haute joaillerie, joined the company as head designer and helped develop the John Hardy workshop and design center in the central highlands of Bali.

What’s new from John Hardy? In celebration of Plaza Indonesia’s 22nd anniversary, John Hardy showcased their Spring 2012 collection and a photography exhibition to educate attendees about the brand’s authentic craftsmanship.

About John Hardy’s designs John Hardy jewelry is known for its designs in sterling silver. A signature feature of John Hardy jewelry, the artisans develop oxidized silver. It changes silver, which is the whitest of all metals, into black to create rich designs, contrasting color and texture. This technique can be found in collections such as Bamboo, Carved Chain, Dot, Kali, Naga, and Palu.

There was also a session for an exclusive preview of the latest Cinta collection, presented by Guy Bedarida. ‘Cinta’ is John Hardy’s one-ofa-kind collection, created with gemstones of exceptional character. ‘Cinta’ was conceived by Guy Bederida at the request of John Hardy as a gift for his wife. Each piece is carefully handmade to represent the beauty found in the combination of organic and precious materials.

www.beatmag.com

In 2003, as Damien Dernoncourt joined the company as president, John Hardy started to sell exclusive, one-of-a-kind, pieces in Hong Kong; shortly after, the brand came to be sold in Russia, Japan and Dubai.

The artisanship event that was held on March 13 and 14 at the Main Atrium, Level 1 Plaza Indonesia, included a demonstration of John Hardy’s unique craftsmanship by Balinese artisans. In addition, the photography exhibition also helped to tell the intricate story of the creative design inspirations behind the brand.

The Virtual Mountain Bike Racing Simulator

This is the exercise bike and video screen that simulates riding a mountain bike through outdoor courses. Users pedal and steer the bike to control a computer-generated cyclist on the 17” color LCD monitor and compete against other virtual cyclists on one of 80 outdoor courses, including a serpentine desert course and an undulating highland track. The bike’s electronically controlled pedaling resistance automatically increases or decreases to replicate the terrain gradients shown on the screen and sensors in the bike saddle monitor whether the user is sitting or standing and the computer-generated cyclist assumes the same posture. Squeezing the bike’s hand brakes or shifting its gears control the momentum of the bike on the monitor, simulating carving around a turn or braking to avoid a fallen competitor. www.hammacher.com $7,000

Recesky Twin Lens Reflex Camera Kit So, we are living in a digital age where digital cameras sport super high resolution sensors, but with the Recesky Twin Lens Reflex Camera Kit, things are a little bit different. This particular twin-lens reflex camera is one which you are fully capable of building yourself, assuming you are able to interpret all the instructions properly. I know, some of us still do experience such troubles, but it is nothing that cannot be overcome with sheer perseverance. The Recesky Twin Lens Reflex Camera Kit will rely on standard 35mm film (your kids might just ask you as to why you use such film, as they scratch their heads to comprehend an age where there was no such thing as film in the past) to get the job done, that is, helping you create old school pieces that used to use film. Retro always has a place in the hearts of man, that is for sure. www. thinkgeek.com $29.99

Ipad 3

The new iPad 3 is not revolutionary, it’s evolutionary, and according to Apple it’s even “resolutionary”, whatever that means. As with the Apple iPhone 4S bump, the hotly anticipated new iPad launch is largely about incremental, hardware upgrades; under-thebonnet stuff that clearly annoys the hell out of everyone seeking a headline-grabbing design change. Put the new iPad 3 side by side with the iPad 2 and the improvement is quite visibly clear. On the older iPad, apps in folders are just blobs of pixelated colour; on the new one you can almost make out text. The Apple Retina Display smooths out edges and renders text pin-sharp so ebooks, websites and documents are so much easier on the eye. There’s better contrast, greater definition with still and moving images, and better colour saturation – an improvement of 44 per cent over the iPad 2, Apple reckons. Cellular World. Jl. Superman is Dead Make it to the Next Round

Bali Toll Road Ready for Construction After a lengthy review and survey phase, construction of the new Benoa toll road is almost underway by contractor PT Jasa Marga, who hope that the new toll will be able to overcome the current bottleneck at Simpang Siur and chronic traffic congestion in South Bali upon its completion in 2013. The 12-kilometer toll road will be built on 18,000 concrete pillars, and is estimated to cost Rp 2.49 trillion (US$273.9 million). “This will be the most beautiful toll road in Indonesia and will be a new icon for Bali,” stated Akhmad Tito Karim, director of PT Jasa Marga, during the project’s groundbreaking ceremony at Benoa harbour. Connecting Benoa harbour, Ngurah Rai International Airport and the Nusa Dua tourism enclave, the massive project has received over Rp. 100 billion in government funding, and is being built under a public-private partnership involving seven state-owned enterprises. However, it seems there is still some controversy surrounding the construction phase, and how it will impact upon Jl. Pratama in Tanjung Benoa. As construction begins, trucks transporting heavy equipment are causing heavy traffic jams on Tanjung Benoa’s main thoroughfare. ‘’The road is narrow, plus there are many parked cars - traffic jams happen,’’ stated DPRD spokesman Ketut Tama Tenaya, adding that he was surprised about how few hotels in the area do not have adequate off-road parking spaces. In order to address this issue and try to avoid traffic congestion along Jl. Pratama, “we have conducted consultations with parties concerned, hopefully it is followed up,’’ stated Tenaya. As well as the toll road project, a new sewage line will be constructed to improve raw waste disposal from the growing number of hotels in the area.

honey &bread tea room Forget the land of milk and honey, if it’s quality food, a bright and breezy atmosphere and a spot of tea you’re after, then look no further than Honey & Bread Tea Room.

S

idled up next door to the newly opened Pepito’s supermarket on the Nusa Dua By Pass, Honey & Bread presents the perfect venue for breakfast, lunch and light dinner, and due to its location, is ideal for commuters to stop off for a takeaway bite to eat. The distressed wooden interior and country kitchen knick knacks give the feel of a contemporary English café, with nice little touches like menus hung on the back of every chair and jars of colourful stuff dotted about the shelves adding to the overall ambience. The menu is a concise affair, with just the right amount of choice from each section including salads, sandwiches, pancakes, gelatos muffins and a few Asian specialties thrown in for good measure.

As well as a mouthwatering assortment of cakes and pastries, unsurprisingly there is a huge selection of fresh baked European style bread on offer, as well as a dedicated menu of specialty honey sourced from throughout Indonesia. Forget the sugar and sweeten your tea with the finest Balinese, Java or Sumbawan madu.Alternatively, you can also takeaway your own 200ml glass jar of bee juice for less than 100k. And that’s not all – Honey & Bread’s real trump card lies in its menu of over 30 loose-leaf teas. Served in quaint, retro style China cups with classy polished silver teapots, choose from a medley of black and green teas, perfumed blends, herbal infusions, Indonesian tips and iced varieties for those with a thirst that needs quenching pronto. For my first visit to Honey & Bread, I make a beeline straight for one of their special signature drinks (26k+). Made with iced tea, honey, fresh fruit, sorbet and plenty of ice, they are about as cool and refreshing as sticking your head in a freezer. Meanwhile I let my pot of vanilla green tea (29k+) gently steep as I order up the chef’s salad (35k+) - a generously sized portion indeed, comprising of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and hard boiled miniature eggs topped with slivers of cheese and beef ham with a side of thousand island dressing.

Honey & Bread is open from 8am to 10pm every day, with a book swap happening every Saturday, not to mention free WiFi for those who need to stay connected. Honey & Bread Tea Room Jl. By Pass Nusa Dua | P. +62 361 776 316 www.rama-restaurants-bali.com

he normal balmy Bali weather was suddenly turned upside down on this particular Saturday night with one of the biggest snap storms in living history hitting town an hour before the show. However, the weather was finally back to normal by the time the DJ hour arrived. Mint once again proved that it’s got more than the location going for it with DJ Ian Pooley hitting the decks. They showed that they know their DJs and Pooley was again no exception. The portly German got up on the decks and spun a bunch of music that was almost hypnotic in its danceability. Everybody in the whole place was gyrating like their was no tomorrow. Great music that literally kept everyone on the floor.

t was an uncharacteristically quiet Saturday night on Jalan Legian due to it being the night after Nyepi and people still getting back to the real life. But that changed the minute you stepped into Bounty where the drum & bass and dubstep was pumping hard. Dnb legend DJ Aprodhite performed and he successfully energized the crowd at that mutinous club we call the Bounty.
