Life in Jakarta just keeps getting better and better. If you are like me, you work and you play hard and this place provides the opportunity for both in bucket loads. As long as you can keep out of the gnarly traffic flow at the wrong time of day, it can be a breeze and if you can’t, make sure you’ve got something to read or your laptop at hand to make that traffic time work in your favour too. The obvious thing to have in your hand is a copy of this magazine to make sure you know where you are going to be once the work has come to an end. If you don’t have the TBJ with you, you might miss out on some huge events around town like last week’s Avicii at Fairgrounds, Fabio XB at Illigals or any one of a dozen big shows around the city. There are plenty of more gigs on too in the next two weeks. Fancy some tasty food, a slice of culture in classical music or the arts, or maybe even catch the latest flick, you can find that inside the TBJ too. If you can’t get your hands on a copy, you can also find all the info on the beatmag.com website, which has just about every page from the magazine and while you’re at it, you can flick through the pdf magazine. It’s all just sitting there waiting for you to log on. Look out for three anniversaries in the next week with Immigrant, Luv’s and Apollo turning it on for their particular crowds on their special days. There are a couple of big live shows up in Ancol including metal heads Dream Theater, while punkers GBH and new-rock-lovers Secondhand Serenade are at Senayan Tennis. The band Yes will be playing live at the Ritz and there’s even a couple of the Groove Armada crew spinning in town next week to boot. Yes, this town has a lot to offer. Whether it’s up north, down south or anywhere between, you can find something for everyone and as they say, you can find it in every shape, color and size. Enjoy your next two weeks in the city, we’re glad to have you aboard.

The third floor of Grand Manhattan Club was turned into an almost real casino, with full decoration and invited guests who were instructed that a ‘Cocktail’ theme was to be the dress code. The event also had performance from a live band, DJ, magician, fun games and a door prize session.

Histeria memuncak saat Anthrax memainkan hits lawasnya seperti ‘Anti Social’, ‘Caught in A Mosh’, ‘Time’, ‘Indian’, ‘Be All End All’, ‘Medusa’ dan sempat memprovokasi penonton untuk membentuk mosh pit di area tengah.

Anthrax, which was scheduled to perform last year in Jakarta, finally made good on their promise to make some heads bang in this city. The concert was located at Pantai Karnaval Ancol and was attended by a huge crowd wearing black t-shirts like a metal head uniform. When “Hell Yeah”, a band from Texas, finished performing and burnt up the atmosphere, Joey Belladona and friends hit the stage chanting ‘Worship’ and were greeted warmly by fans. The hysteria peaked when Anthrax performed their old hits like ‘Anti Social’, ‘Caught in A Mosh’, ‘Time’, ‘Indian’, ‘Be All End All’, ‘Medusa’ and they left the audience no choice but to form a mosh pit in the middle of it all. The concert that had been a long time coming was finally closed by the song ‘I am the Law’. Even though the Big Four that consists of Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeath, and Slayer failed to perform together in Jakarta, the presence of Anthrax has sated most metal heads for some time to come.

For the 23rd time the Viking Cup was held and this year it was hosted in Jakarta. Over Easter, 250 Vikings at heart from Asia and elsewhere descended on Indonesia. Football, Fun & Friendship is the motto of the predominantly Scandinavian community and all matches were played in Sentul, which saw Singapore take the trophy with Bangkok as runners-up. The equally important beer drinking competition was won by Bangkok for the men and for the first time by Jakarta when it came to the women. Even Elvis turned up for the event as he too was a true Viking at heart. Next year the Viking Cup will be staged in Malaysia and we hope to stage the 25th Anniversary in Bali in 2014, the year of the world cup.

The Majestic Sounds of

the Gamelan

B

esides enjoying the extravagant nightlife of Jakarta’s huge party events, why don’t we take a look at the other side, Indonesia’s tuned percussion instrument called the Gamelan. The best-known gamelan music is from Java and Bali. We usually don’t often hear these traditional tunes just anywhere unless we are attend a wedding or special ceremony of some sort, but with Jakarta’s various entertainment scenes, there are a set of people who are still dedicated in playing these beautiful elegant tunes.

In the South of Jakarta, in the area of Pejaten, lies a house filled with a full set of gamelan instruments that are open to anyone who is interested in playing. The groups usually are a mix of both expats and Indonesians. Each Wednesday, from 7 to 9pm, from ages as young as eight to senior citizens, students will be learning the classical music of Central Java called the Karawitan. Guided by an old guru of gamelan, Pak Suparno and a constant group of players, they always say that the key to playing the gamelan is that you have to really listen carefully and you have to have the ability to count from one to seven, you can definitely play the gamelan together as a group.

www.beatmag.com

Each instrument completes the other like you would see in an orchestra in a gala music concert. But this is the traditional Indonesian orchestra that has varying sounds and will captivate your heart in its serenity as if it were a healing process such as meditating. So if you’re interested in knowing more, feel free to ask your family and friends to learn the beautiful tunes of the Javanese gamelan and learn new music from the islands of Indonesia.

Originally a quartet, the group was formed in Jakarta in 2008. They started getting attention from the rock scenesters via their promo-demo Tiga Puluh in 2009. Followed in 2010 by a split album with Serigala Jahanam, Gurun Nestapa, released by Yes No Wave label and then self-released Kisah Kasih Lokalisasi EP which opened the door to a bigger audience. Listen and look very closely at what they are up to via myspace.com/ suritheband and Twitter @_SURI_.

If psychedelia, heavy blues, and Black Sabbath are your tunes of choice, then Suri will make you feel right at home. A few weeks ago they released their first fulllength album titled, Mothology. Compared to their previous albums, this new record is stronger in character, mature, rawer, and a lot more stoned stoner rock. The presence of a jazz virtuoso, Riza Arshad, who did the mixing and mastering also created a better, heavier sound.

Despite the Titanic, ship cruises are now more popular than ever

f e a t u r e

045

The disaster in 1912, in which just over 1,500 people lost their lives, was of such epic proportions that the proper noun “Titanic” entered into our vocabularies as an adjective in its own right. Described originally as the vessel that couldn’t sink, Titanic was hailed, at the time of her launch, as the largest moving manmade object ever created. People have surprisingly short memories, though. Before the era of mass air travel, ocean liners were the main means of inter-continental travel and most visitors to Indonesia would have arrived by ship at Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, or Singaraja, North Bali. From the 1960s, when air travel started to become cheap enough to cater for the mass market, the ocean liner business went into a long, slow decline. It reappeared as the cruise ship industry in the 1980s, with vessels built much larger and designed for comfort rather than sheer speed. Pleasure cruising is now a major component of the tourist industry worldwide, with business estimated to be worth almost $20 billion and 19 million passengers carried in 2011. Modern cruise ships resemble five-star hotels: As many of the cabins as possible have portholes while passengers expect to be able to enjoy facilities, apart from top-quality restaurants, that include most – if not all – of the following: designer-label shopping malls, cinemas, theaters,

swimming pools, fitness centres, busines centres, spas, nightclubs and casinos. The amount of food consumed on cruise ships is mind-blowing: The weekly consumption by passengers and crew on Royal Caribbean International ship Mariner of the Seas is 9,000 kg of beef, 28,000 eggs, 30,000 litres of ice cream and 18,000 slices of pizza. That doesn’t include prodigious quantities of luxury foodstuffs like champagne, fine wines and spirits, caviar and cigars. One of the factors driving the increased demand for cruising is the changing world demographic: Quite simply, there are more elderly and retired people around and many of them are opting for a cruise as a vacation. This is already starting to become noticeable in Bali and adjacent islands as many ships now stop there as part of a Southeast Asian cruise. Two recent incidents involving ships operated by Costa Cruises, one of the world’s largest companies of its type, illustrate how popular cruising has become, for both were modern vessels. At the end of February 2012, Costa Allegra ran adrift in the Indian Ocean after she was immobiised by an engine-room fire. Only six weeks earlier, Costa Concordia, launched in 2005 as the largest Italian ship ever built, capsized off the Italian coast after she struck a rock. Of the 4,250 or so people aboard 30 are known to have died, with 60 injured. Just like Titanic 100 years before, the Concordia disaster showed that even a modern ship can still sink if holed badly enough below the waterline. Industry analysts reckon that the two Costa incidents will not have a long-term detrimental impact on the popularity of cruising. Expect to see more ships calling on Bali and Jakarta in coming years. (Jim Read)

www.beatmag.com

Y

ou’ve probably had enough already of all the Titanic commemorations: The 100th anniversary of the vessel’s sinking on her maiden voyage has just been celebrated widely while the 1997 Hollywood movie, which won 11 Oscars, has been re-released in 3D. The original was one of the great weepies of all time.

sonik kicks

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Neatly sidestepping the descent into wobbly middle-aged and middle of the road dreariness a la Peter Gabriel and David Gilmore, Paul Weller has sensibly kept his modish suits sharp and his music even sharper of late. Clearly underneath that spiky hedgehog haircut lies an overactive brain that is showing no sign of slowing down despite his 54 years. With the enthusiasm of a puppy on crack, Weller eschews the vintage tinted nostalgia of 1995’s Stanley Road and the dad-rock of follow up Heavy Soul on Sonik Kicks to hectically delve into a range of genres–often times just momentarily–firing out ideas and weird interludes like a catherine wheel gone haywire. Psychedelic punk pop and cosmic guitars are liberally splashed across the album, but the real surprise is the gorgeous and quite unexpected dub bliss out of “Study in Blue”, which the album is more or less built around. A duet with fifth (yes fifth) wife Hannah, the song mutates halfway through into psychedelic dub reggae. Simply put, it’s just great, the sort of ganja-hinged preposterousness you’d never expect from Weller. Far from coherent, a few too many electro blips, bleeps and high-pitched white noise hint that someone got a little too carried away on the mixing desk. You can imagine Weller sneaking into the control room between tracks and fiddling with the buttons before being swatted away by the sound engineer and told to stay put in the studio. Opening track “Green” suddenly fades out for a few seconds around the 1.40 mark like someone has spilt coffee over the cross fader, and by the end of the ‘experimental’ 2.01 minutes of “Sleep of the Serene”, the acoustic slide into “By The Waters” is a sublime relief. Furthermore, the 20 seconds of interlude “Twilight” could have easily been left on the cutting room floor altogether IMHO. So is Sonik Kicks actually any good? Well, yes and no. Your dad will love it and think it’s groundbreaking. Meanwhile younger listeners will wonder why some old crusty is trying to do dub. Obviously Weller doesn’t care either way, and is content to do whatever the hell he pleases for now. Good on him. Dan Ashcroft

The Classical Music Week

By Erza S.T.

Another performance that is equally interesting this week is Alesia Arnatovich’s recital at Taman Ismail Marzuki’s (TIM) small theater. This recital is organized by Ananda Sukarlan Center and made as the prelude to the ASA-BIMA piano international competition that will take place in Bandung from July 9 to 14. Alesia is invited not only to perform, but also to give master classes for all pianists. Born in 1981 in Minsk – Belarus, Alesia Arnatovich graduated from the Belarusian State Academy of Music under the supervision of Professor Sergey Turgel. In 2005, she obtained her Master of Music Arts Degree and continued to augment her professional skills by taking up the assistant probation post-graduate trainee course at the Belarusian State Academy of Music a year after that.

A wide range of programs from Delibes’s beloved aria “Flower Duet” from his opera Lakme, Ibu Sud’s famous song “Tanah Air” (My Homeland) to Rossini’s famous William Tell overture and Brahms’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major op. 77” are some of the highlights that the Jakarta Philharmonic Orchestra will perform together with their fantastic guest stars.

As a pianist, Alesia has been performing all over Europe to Bahrain, Peru and Chile. Being devoted to music in every form, Alesia enjoys her solo performances as much as being a partner in chamber and vocal shows. She is also interested in musical scientific research connected with problems of modern musical creativity and performance.

As an orchestra that was established in 1999, Jakarta Philharmonic Orchestra started with only 20 musicians and were known by the name of Orkes Symphony Jakarta. Like a great Bordeaux wine, this orchestra took their time to develop. It’s now a big orchestra with 40 musicians. In their long career, this orchestra has plenty of experiences both good and bad. However, they survived and in the end decided to carry the Jakarta Philharmonic Orchestra name as their monicker.

For her recital in Jakarta, Alesia plans to play works from Rachmaninov as well as some of Schumann’s ‘Noveletten’. Alesia also chose two of Ananda Sukarlan’s virtuosic works: Rapsodia Nusantara No. 1 and 2. Ananda Sukarlan’s famous rhapsodies are made as a tribute to Indonesian folk songs. The first rhapsody has Betawi flavors, as the second rhapsody focuses more on Javanese children’s songs such as “Tokecang” and “Cublak – Cublak Suweng”.

CJ Tom Yum

Looking to spice up your dining experience? This Thai eatery certainly packs a tasty punch!

CJ Tom Yum Jl. Adhyaksa No. 5, Lebak Bulus, Jakarta Selatan Ph: (021) 759 214 05 Opens: 11.30 am – 3 pm (Lunch) 6 pm – 10 pm (Dinner)

Thai cooking puts an emphasis on well-prepared dishes with strong aromatic components. The spiciness of Thai cuisine is quite well known. As with other Asian cuisines, balance, detail and variety are of great significance to Thai chefs. Thai food is known for its balance of three to four fundamental taste senses in each dish or the overall meal: sour, sweet, salty, and bitter.

As our mains started to arrive, the waiting staff were getting slammed with new orders from the quickly-filling house. We ordered the Baby Buncis (or string beans) with Shrimp (22.5k), and the Stir Fried Bamboo Oyster (30k). These are more of the Chinese-influenced varieties of Thai dishes, and both were luscious in their own right. Another picked of ours, the Steamed Nila Fish with Lemon Sauce (47.5k) was downright outstanding. The fish was succulently steamed to perfection, and the sauce was just exquisite. Salty, tangy, and dare we say, refreshingly zesty?

CJ

Tom Yum is a great little Thai restaurant in the capital. The casual, no frills eatery is nestled on a leafy road in a residential area of Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta. Owned by a Thai gentleman whose wife is an Indonesian, CJ are the initials of their son’s name. The head chef is also Thai; so you know that you’re in for a genuine treat!

Another iconic dish was the Thai Style Fried Rice in Pineapple (27.5k) which also made its way to our table. We consensually loved it, and it was devoured in no time flat! As for drink, don’t forget We visited CJ Tom Yum recently, on a weeknight to cool yourself down from all the spiciness with and the restaurant was busy! When we arrived, the Thai Ice Tea or Thai Ice Coffee (20k). there were already a number of patrons there and we also saw many reserved tables just There is plenty to applaud at CJ Tom Yum. This waiting to be filled. Before long, the place was hidden gem is being discovered by more and packed! If you’re thinking of coming on the more of Jakarta’s foodies, and rightly so. weekend, it is recommended that you call ahead (Budi Iskandar) and reserve yourself a table. Business is good for this almost-one-year-old restaurant! Our culinary journey to Thailand began with the most popular dish, the Tom Yum soup. Seafood Tom Yum (37.5k for small, 57.5 medium), to be exact; a hot and sour broth made from lemon grass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, dried chilies and lime juice, and generously filled with prawns, crabs, squids, New Zealand green mussels, and gindara or black cod fish. This dish is great as an appetizer or as a main dish when served with rice. Its robust fragrance is sure to tempt your taste buds. For a bigger group, supersize your order to the Special Seafood Tom Yum for 155k.

Fish sauce is a very common ingredient in Thai cuisine which adds a complex saltiness to the dishes. Chicken feet not your cup of tea? After having a taste of this dish, you’ll surely become a convert!

www.beatmag.com

Thai Style Boneless Chicken Feet Salad (27k) is another great starter. It is a spicy mix of boneless chicken feet, with sliced lemongrass, shallots, mint, and cilantro. The dressing of lime juice, sweet chili paste, pounded garlic, and fish sauce, is superb.

BLUEGRASS Bar & Grill

Bluegrass Bar & Grill is a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, and a whole lot of flavors!

www.beatmag.com

Bluegrass Bar & Grill Komplek Rasuna Epicentrum, Jl. HR Rasuna Said, Jakarta Selatan 12940 Ph: (021) 2994 1660 Opens: 10 am – 1 am (until 2 am on weekends)

Website: www.bluegrassjakarta.com Twitter: @BluegrassBnG Facebook fan page: Bluegrass Bar & Grill

akarta is truly a foodie’s paradise. There’s always something new and exciting to tempt every taste. Strategically located in the shadow of the Bakrie Building at Rasuna Epicentrum, Bluegrass Bar & Grill commenced service in October, 2011 and it has now become one of the trendiest restaurants in town! A massive revolving door provides a welcome the size of Texas when you come in. It weighs in at 1.2 tons! Impressive. Most impressive. The interior is decidedly modern Western, making Bluegrass looks like a big, stylish country estate. Elements of dark wood and grey colored rock are juxtaposed well here. We also noticed that the spacious parking area in front of the restaurant adds an American feel to the place. You can sit inside with the comfort of air conditioning, but the patio seating is a plus point at Bluegrass. It is very popular with the patrons, particularly in the evening.

The dish is served on top of a small smokeflavored wooden plank for a dramatic touch. The desserts at Bluegrass also look like works of arts. Check out the multi colored layer of sweetness that is the Rainbow Cake (60k). The Chocolate Mousse (50k) here represents security and comfort itself. But our top pick was the Granny’s Apple Pie (60k); double crust apple and spices on a pie, served with vanilla ice cream. We’re not sure whose Granny’s recipe this is, but she deserves a big bear hug from us!

059

f o o d

J

We also tried the refreshing signature mocktails, such as the Jak City Cooler (40k), made out of fresh grapes, muddled with watermelon puree, vanilla syrup, and lime juice. The Joker (40k) is another cool concoction of crushed fresh apples and kiwis, mixed with kiwi and apple syrup and topped with soda water. The White Cosmo (95k) is also a drink at Bluegrass worth mentioning. It’s something that is sure to become the new toast of the town.

This eatery also claims to have the longest bar in Jakarta. It notably stands out at 22 meters Bluegrass is a solid addition to Jakarta’s dining long! And be sure to check out the enormous scene. A second trip is already in the works for us. See you there! (Budi Iskandar) coffee machine, too. In conjunction with the country theme, the menu is dominated by Western delights. We started with the ever popular Buffalo Wings (55k); fried chicken wings served with blue cheese dip. These wings are available in a number of flavors: Medium, Mild, Hot, and should you feel masochistic, Killer! Now that’s a kick and a half! The Puff Pastry Brie with Blueberry Sauce (60k) is another noteworthy first course. The blueberry sauce gives an impression that this could be a dessert. But as a starter, this dish is simply superb.

As for the main course, we went for the Texas Beef Ribs (185k) that will surely satisfy your inner carnivore. The flavorsome barbecue sauce enveloped the generous portion of meat very appetizingly. The dish comes with mashed potatoes and a side salad. The Plank Salmon (95k) is also a brilliant choice; succulent salmon, oven baked to perfection, served with roasted potatoes and vegetables.

www.beatmag.com

Looking to add a certain zing in your appetizer? Try the Caesar Salad with Wild Boar Jerky (70k); it’s a fine twist of the old favorite. The fried wild boar jerky adds a certain country touch to the salad.

21 Jump Street Action & Adventure, Comedy. Directors: Phil Lord, Chris Miller. Writers: Michael Bacall, Jonah Hill. Cast: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis. Pair comedians Jonah Hill and the hunky Channing Tatum as young policemen assigned to an undercover unit infiltrating a drug ring in high school and you’ll definitely get some fun action scenes and hilarious lines! An homage to the famous 80s TV series “21 Jump Street”, this modern version/remake from the guy who wrote “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” may be one hell of a ride. Bring your cool book bag, put on your funky sneakers and wear your high-school uniform to get in character for your undercover assignment!

Battleship Action, Sci-Fi. Director: Peter Berg. Writers: Erich Hoeber, Jon Hoeber. Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Jesse Plemons.

Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval board game, Battleship is a story about an international fleet of ships that come across an alien armada during their naval war game exercises. The encounter soon turns into an intense battle over sea, land and air. It’s a colossal battle, it’s cool in its special effect riddled visuals, it’s tense, and it’s full of sexy cast members both male and female. Fasten the seat belt and all hands on deck!

The Devil Inside Horror. Director: William Brent Bell. Writers: William Brent Bell, Matthew Peterman. Cast: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Danny Trejo, Suzan Crowley. Is it another exorcism-themed movie or is it not? “The Devil Inside” tells the story of when Isabella becomes involved in a series of unauthorized exorcisms during her mission to discover what happened to her mother, Maria, who allegedly murdered three people during her own exorcism 20 years before. “Many have been possessed by one; only one has been possessed by many at once.” That’s exactly the horror you’ll encounter here. You better put on a Rosario, prepare holy water in your tumbler, and perhaps you’ll find some security in the theater.

LADIES AND GENTS, THE CAMBRIDGE SATCHEL BAG HAS ARRIVED

By: LailaAchmad

he new it bag has arrived in town! The famed fashion blogger-slash-shoe designer Diana Rikasari loves it (and bought both yellow and pink, damn). Media personality Miund adores it and so do many other fashionistas around the world. Nope, it’s not Proenza Schouler or Balenciaga. It’s the Cambridge Satchel bag, a scholarlylooking satchel that is currently the darling bag across the world.

www.beatmag.com

The bag is created by the Cambridge Satchel Company, as one of their satchels and leather products. It was founded in 2008 by Julie Deane and her mother Freda Thomas as a way to pay private school fees for Deane’s children. The satchels are all based on an original Oxford and Cambridge satchel design (how preppy can it get?) and aimed at school children. It started as a humble company producing three handmade bags a week. However, fashion bloggers soon noticed the bag, and it immediately became a cult among them. Needless to say, the bag met incredibly high demand and stores around the world have been selling out. In 2011, the Cambridge Satchel Company managed to get international fashion magazine

coverage and collaborations with top fashion houses such as Comme des Garcons and Dover Street Market. Production increased to 1,500, and turnover increased from ₤15,000 to an estimated ₤8 million. They even managed to set-up a factory in Leicester, UK. Talk about a phenomenal success story! Aaaand… did you hear? The creator of Mad Men adores the bag SO much, he recently gave all 300 cast and crew of the show a specially-made leather bag as a thank-you gift. So why do people love it so much? Though I’ve only observed a friend’s bag and haven’t owned one yet, I have to say it really is easy to fall in love with the Cambridge Satchel bag. First of all, the quality is incomparable. The genuine leather is sturdy, smooth, and handmade to perfection. I can’t wait to see how the leather ages over the years. Secondly, it’s functional. With its long, adjustable shoulder strap and spacious shape, you can store your papers and even laptop safely. The inner pockets are also super useful to place your knick-knacks. Moreover, I can totally, totally see this as my traveling bag.

s t y l e

063

Lastly, the main message of this article is this: The Cambridge Satchel bag is FINALLY available locally, at the Goods Department, Plaza Indonesia! The price ranges from Rp 1,899,000 to Rp 2,599,000, depending on the size and model. It comes in every color of the rainbow and various sizes – 11″, 13″ or 15″.

www.beatmag.com

Thirdly, though some of my Louis Vuitton wearing friends can’t see themselves wearing this baby daily, I do think the model is highly versatile. From what I’ve seen, you can virtually combine the bag with anything.

SIGNATURE & ICONIC PRODUCTS FROM MAKEUP BRANDS

BY: AMALIA HAYATI

There are many beauty products out there that can be labeled as Iconic. So much that sometimes when you think about that brand, you would think of that specific product. We’re sure that at least one of these products has made their way into your makeup pouch. Let’s take a look at what we put on our list.

Face Touche Eclat 1. YSL This product needs no further

explanation. It’s a luminizing pen that instantly brightens up your under eye area or any other parts that need highlighting. Don’t mistake it for concealer, because it’s not actually a concealer. When you have a long night at work, trust this miraculous pen to brighten up your eyes.

2. Smashbox Primer

Photo Finish Foundation

Hands down the most powerful foundation primer in the market. Well, at least one of the most powerful anyway. Whether it’s rain or shine, even on the most scorching, hottest day in Jakarta, this primer will definitely make your foundation stick all day long. No blotches, messes or melt downs, thanks to this primer. This face primer even makes sure that your foundation stays put throughout the exercise session.

Meteorites 3. Guerlain Despite its hefty price

tag, it’s still one product coveted by many. This illuminating powder delivers a glowing finish to your face. Something that all women want to have: a luminous looking face. Consisting of Meteorite Pearls with six multi-coloured pearls, that when blended together, deliver a flawless and more radiant complexion. The fact that the packaging and Meteorites Pearls are so pretty adds more reason as to why it’s a coveted beauty product.

Eyes www.beatmag.com

Decay Primer Potion 4. Urban It’s a must have item for

eyeshadow base. It’s a non-creasing eyeshadow primer that will definitely make your eyeshadow stay put for the whole day. Even people with oily lids swear by it, because their eyeshadow doesn’t crease at all. It also brings out the eyeshadow’s pigment and makes it easier to blend.

Great Lash Mascara Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner 5. Maybelline Though there are many other mascaras in 6. I praise the day that Bobby Brown decided the market today that will rival Maybelline Great Lash, it remains very popular. Perhaps because Great Lash has been around since forever, and when you think about mascara, you’ll remember this one. Performance-wise, this is mostly perfect if you want a natural lasting look. Otherwise, go find something else.

to bring to life the idea of gel eyeliner. This is among the first gel eyeliner product, if not the first, in the market. Gel eyeliner is so easy to work with, because the texture is not too thin so you can draw your liner with confidence. You can also choose the brush that you want use so that you can create the eyeliner that you want. It’s also waterproof and smudge-proof.

s t y l e

Alis Viva 7. Pensil I can simply put it this way – there are only very few women in Indonesia that have not yet

tried this. It is among one of the most common things that you’ll find in an Indonesian gal’s makeup pouch. Why is it loved by so many? Of course because it’s very affordable; not too soft nor too hard, and the colour seems to suit most Indonesian women’s brown tone.

Cheeks & Lips Blush in Orgasm 8. NARS This blush is known to give that

healthy flush, much like when you’re having that flush after the, like the name suggests, orgasm. It’s a really nice coral pink blush with very beautiful gold sheen. When you’ve come across NARS Orgasm, you’ll understand why the colour is so iconic.

Benetint 9. Benefit It’s all thanks to Benefit who first started the cheek tint craze. Twin sisters Jean and Jane Ford

created Benefit Benetint 35 years ago and it’s still their top three selling products until this very day. The cherry tint gives you a nice reddish pink fluster that will not come off even if you perspire. But the thing is, I never quite mastered the application of Benetint, since it also won’t come off my fingers (my choice of tool when applying Benetint). I know there are many people who love this product with all their hearts, especially those looking for a natural-looking flush on their cheeks. It can also be used to stain your lips. Don’t you just love a multi-purpose product?

Russian Red Lipstick 10. MAC This product is almost synonymous with ‘Red Lipstick’. Its blue undertone makes it possible for

So, which iconic product that we’ve listed here do you already have? Do you think we are missing anything here?

anyone to rock it. Suits perfectly fine with light, medium or deep tones.

The infamous Indra Aziz provided some mean scats in collaboration with the DJ doing it old school and there was a lot of ‘head boppin’. Good music and great barbeque was all it needed to set the tone for the main event and the public was not disappointed. Why would they be? The buttery voice of Colbie

With two differently themed sets namely the ‘Jazz Under the Stars’ and Urban Picnic Cinema & Open Air Theatre’ there was plenty of creative and feel good times for everyone. Tropicsence

T

he French coined the expression ‘joi de vivre’ which translates into the “joy of living” and for the regular city bloke stuck in the daily humdrums of the Jakarta life, Tropicsence was the event to be at. Why? This was a chance to let your artistic side loose and exercise your photographic abilities. How? The boys at Happyfriends Production had three foreign models came out in their bikinis at the Sommerset Berlian’s Poolside and as you can

imagine… there was a flashlight frenzy. The goal was to let photographers, old and new alike to do something different in the capital, artistic yet separated from things you’d normally do in the city. The rave reviews and the fact that everyone who signed up was already excited about the next one meant that this event was simply a hit. Oh, not to mention the sunset, acoustic music set and delish food. Yeah, you missed out!

Scott Thompson finally arrived at the finish line after running over 1250 miles from Bali to Senayan Driving Range in Jakarta last week. The 25 day run was in order to campaign and raise funds for education for school children, as well as to help children with cancer. “Thank you to Mary’s Cancer Kiddies (MCK) and the National Foundation for Children (YCAB) who became my reason to keep running,” stated Scott. “Hopefully the money raised will be useful to help with medical expenses for children with cancer in Indonesia,” added the 44 year old Scotsman. Through his campaign called “Keep Running”, Scott managed to collect donations totaling Rp3.8 billion from individual and corporate sponsors, with one organization donating Rp. 1 million per kilometer run. “That is more than we expected,” he added with a satisfied smile. Scott’s run clearly touched the hearts of people all along the route, with one couple riding a motorcycle a distance of 100 km from Situbondo to Makati just to greet Scott after seeing him on TV. Chairwoman for YCAB, Veronica Colondam expressed her deepest gratitude, saying that; “I am thrilled to see him appear in Jakarta. Through him, exercise proved to be a means to help others,” said Veronica.

Locals were shocked and amazed by the discovery of 25 bags of cash in an empty field in Denpasar last week. The cash consisted of 20, 50 and 100 thousand rupiah bills which had been cut and bagged and left lying in a vacant plot of land. After alerting police the money was traced back to Bank Indonesia (BI) who claimed that the money was no longer in circulation and was meant to be destroyed, which is their usual policy. The land-owners are entrepreneurs in the waste disposal business, and decided to use this money as land fill. “Usually we don’t destroy the money because it is not feasible,” said Young Senior BI cashier Denpasar, Widaryadi. “The waste money was to be disposed of as landfill, actually in Suwung, on Sunday night, but because my employees had gone home, the bags were put here as land fill,” said Wayan Suarta, owner of the land. Reports estimate the money has been there for four days, however BI officials say this is not against procedure providing that landlords bury the money immediately if using it as landfill. The value of destroyed money each year is estimated to be in the billions of rupiah. Widaryadi added that people interested in using old bills for other purposes, such as souvenirs or as craft material go into a BI branch and ask.

Drive past the tall grass screen at the front and you’d never know that just the other side is an oasis of tranquility, complete with a beautiful wooden Joglo pavilion. Large wooden benches strewn with cushions surround even larger wooden tables, with an array of traditional carvings and knick knacks dotted about. There’s plenty of greenery too, giving a calming air to the place that’s part restaurant part garden terrace. Go casual on the benches or alternatively grab a normal table inside close to the bar. Brilliantly, the attention to detail and quality feel of the place also extends to the menu, with, as the name suggests, plenty of home cooked style

For a healthy start you won’t go far wrong with a tall glass of healing juice (25k++), or if you’re after something a bit sweeter then try the straw banana (25k++), which is a bit like breakfast in a glass. Standout starter has to be the fantastic pepper crust tuna salad (35k++) – chunky sashimi style seared tuna with a lively pepper coating that is perfectly complimented by a medley of watercress, baby ruccola, tomato and red radish. For the particularly hungry, the enormous rack of grilled pork or lamb ribs (65k++) should do the trick. Tenderly grilled to perfection, they simply fall off the bone and would actually be a great sharing dish.

his time, Huu Bar put forth an American DJ to entertain their masses with sound and merriment. His name was Mandel Turner and he heroically pressed those buttons and made people dance. He wore a red shirt, which drastically contrasted to his ice cold DJ style which contrasted even more with his red hot music. The crowd? They danced the night away, enjoying the soulful sounds that came from those magical black boxes some people call speakers.

OS Supper club brought in five international DJs for a very special sunset event. The fantastic five were Rob Sharp, Nathan Francis, Carl Drake, Jay Vicente, De Mech and they all brought a unique style. They commenced the music at 5pm and tech, house, minimal funk, and disco could be heard all night long. The DJs weren’t the only treat with scrumptious meals of rock lobster, crab, and tuna being served. Seems like my kind of sunset.

Delhi 2 Dublin elhi 2 Dublin rocked JPs with their eclectic sound that melded both Indian and Irish tunes. At first the band had some sound issues which forced party goers to anxiously await the sound technicians to sort things out. Before long everything was good to go and the band had free reign to rock the crowd with their signature high energy shows that seems to make the punters go spastic. The band interspaced fast upbeat tracks with mellower artistic songs that truly showed that they were very skilled musicians. If you’re into live music, this was the show for you.

ocoon wouldn’t miss a chance to celebrate a good Friday. The club held an event with guest DJs from Australia, Rob Sharp and Luke P. They rocked their decks from 10pm ‘til morning. One thing about Cocoon, punters will always jump in the pool and that Friday night was no exception. So for some, it was a very wet and awesome night. For others, it was just an awesome dry night. Either way, loads of fun.
