I must say we are very honoured to have the likes of Morrissey in Jakarta and I think the large crowd that turned out to see his concert last week should be congratulated for the way they conducted themselves. Screaming, jumping up and down, trying to get on the stage (even if they were young men with flowers) and some managing to; it all summed up to an exciting show and exciting crowd. That’s exactly the way a live concert should be. Next week on Thursday May 24 The Beat Magazine is celebrating 12 years of existence in Indonesia. This magazine and in particular, the edition published in Bali, was the first free street-press publication to hit the streets of this country back in the beginning of 2000. It’s been a rocking, and challenging at times, 12 years as we, a total of many dozens of people over the years, have put together this magazine every two weeks without fail. I would like thank all of them for their contributions over those years and all you readers that have stuck by us through thick and thin. The anniversary party will be held at Red Square, a venue that has given us more support than any since starting in Jakarta again for the second time in October 2009. We have a great line-up for the night with DJ James Sullivan and DJ Milinka, who will also be raising funds for her charity. You can read all about that MLM charity inside. There will be a free flow from our generous sponsors including wines from Watershed, a top Margaret River producer, Dekuyper cocktails and Absolut vodka from 10 to 11pm or until finished. Look out for an invitation for that part of the evening. Great music, dancers and giveaways will keep the night going long and hard. Everyone is welcome and thank you all for your support of The Beat magazine over the past 12 years. Check inside for all the details of the events coming our way in the next two weeks and if you have any events coming up, let us know as soon as possible by sending an email to jakarta@beatmag.com.
Please send contributions, letters, etc to editor@beatmag.com The opinions expressed in any article or advertisement are those of the writer or advertiser and not necessarily those of the Beat. The Beat crew takes no responsiblity for anyone caught out in the photos.

Nynke Laverman was born in 1980 and finished her study at the Academy of Performing Arts in Amsterdam in 2002. A year after finishing, she released her debut album called Sielesâlt (Salt of the Soul), the poems from Dutch poet, Slauerhoff that she translated into Frisian and sang in the Portuguese Fado style. She introduced something new, a Frisian Fado, which is a music combination that has never been made before. It became her gold album that got her a Piter Jelles Award. This time, Erasmus Huis will present Nynke Laverman on Saturday May 19 at 7:30pm, and the concert is totally free for all.

DJ Ali is one local DJs who has witnessed the club scene transformation in Jakarta. He learned to DJ when he was 17 years old. Ali had been able to mix songs in his sets, but wasn’t allowed to appear in clubs because he was too young. His love of DJ culture led to collect thousands of vinyl records with which he sharpened his skills. In 2000, Ali performed for the first time in a rave party in Bandung along with the some popular DJs. The Gate, a Jakarta club, was the first place for Ali was a resident DJ and in 2006, Rich invited him to join with them. Ali and a few others made a DJ school and label management company called Sound of Deus, that oversees many talented DJs.

Sponsored by Absolute Vodka, the show presented a Laser Man who wore a reflective costume that directed green laser beams like a giant disco ball. There were also the Sexy Glow Dancers which looked like characters out of Tron. The art decoration of Kobar made the usually Red Square kind off green and it was stormsome.

One of the most anticipated events this year was the Playground in the Senayan Indoor Tennis area. This year’s Dimensions Playground revolved around the sacred number “five”, which represents the event’s fifth anniversary on the fifth day of the fifth month. At the main entrance guests were welcomed by a merrygo-round that was placed near a special section called the silent concert. The previous Playground had garnered attention with its Silent Disco concept. This year, the event featured a 3-channel headphone that broadcasted two DJs and a live band, plus visual mapping as the presentation and a bigger venue. There was also more variety in the acts that headlined the event, ranging from pop, electronica, house, dubstep, to drum n’ bass. There were food and drink stalls with unique designs at the center of the Indoor Tennis area, just before the Embassy Club entrance. People came in to the building for the shows and to take refuge from the heat outside.
The most awaited performances by the audiences that night were the veterans Saint Etienne and Kelis, who sang and played a drum set, and the main act, the Gorillaz Sound System. At the end of the night, it was another successful Playground to mark its five years in the business. Besides Jakarta, the Playground was also held in Bali. Thumbs up!

Another equally important section at the Playground was the Wonderbar Forest Rave. The stage and its vicinity attracted much attention from the majority of Wonderbar fans as well as the mechanical bull and the swings in its vicinity. A heap of artists performed on stage, including: Marc Roberts, Danny Howells, the Jakarta Techno Militia, local DJs like DJ Remy Irwan, Indra7, 1man, Uchieel, Daniswe, and Ai. Audiences were reminded of the heyday of Wonderbar by the laser lighting used during the performances on the stage.

Tenis Indoor Senayan Wednesday 10 May

Who is Morrissey? I wasn’t expecting this. Not this!”Morrissey told the audience, gesturing to the large crowd that packed Tenis Senayan to see the first performance from the former Smiths lead singer and songwriter in Jakarta. Thousands of mostly young people (a really vocal and enthusiastic crowd, btw) were at the sold out show and they weren’t let down for a minute. Starting off with The Smiths’ classic ‘How Soon is Now’ and working through a bunch of his 25 years of solo material and a few tracks from the Smiths four years of existence, including ‘Shoplifters of the World’, ‘I Know it’s Over’, ‘Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me’ and a stunning version of ‘Meat is Murder’, that just about stole the show. By the time the almost 53 year old Morrissey played the uplifting encore ‘Still Ill’, he had shown everybody in the house that he still had what it takes to crank out an excellent show. With the aid of his crew of brondong, bare-chested accomplices who were backing up on guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, and a mysterious, slightly overweight woman dressed in sequins on guitar to the left of stage, the show was a rocking, emotive and an inspiring hour and a half with the Big Mouth from Manchester. I’m so glad I managed to get in past the security, minus my camera, cigs and my beer, of course, but it was all worth it in the end. [D.Trauts]

The heavy weight quartet from Bandung, Komunal, just released their latest record, Gemuruh Musik Pertiwi. Even though it’s still as heavy as ever, the approach in this third album is slightly different compared to the previous ones. Its roots are a little more rock than metal. Yet it’s not as fast, more mid-tempo, with clearer articulation, meaning you can hear what the vocalist sings about. According to the band, which is often tagged as one of the best heavy metal collectives in Indonesia, the album was recorded live at ArtSound Studio in Jakarta and only took a day to finish (excluding additional guitar improvisation and backing vocals). It’s also dedicated in honor of the legendary Indonesian rock veterans, God Bless. “In terms of spirit, Komunal wants to replicate what God Bless did in their magnum opus, Raksasa,” commented the frontman, Doddy Hamson. Keep yourself informed by visiting them at www.myspace.com/fromswamp and following at www.twitter.com/komunal.
www.beatmag.com

Getting Across Safely
lthough the most common road-related complaint in Jakarta is about traffic congestion, safety for pedestrians is a significant issue too. A lack of discipline and consideration for other road users by both drivers and pedestrians seems to be the root cause of the problem. Motorcyclists riding on the pavement at busy times has been sufficiently annoying to walkers that a protest movement has even been launched by concerned citizens. Furthermore, car drivers will always try to park as close as possible to their destination – regardless of the impact on other road users, while some pedestrians will always jaywalk whenever an opportunity arises. I’m sure you’ve noticed how drivers on a school run will double- or even triple-park as close as possible to the school even if it reduces visibility and the road width to a single lane, while pedestrians, often too lazy to use footbridges, will shortcut directly across busy roads, putting their own lives and that of the drivers’ in danger. It doesn’t help, either, that many of the footbridges, particularly those on busway routes, are badly maintained, with gaping holes or worse and are potential death traps for the unwary. Paradoxically, one of the advantages of Jakarta’s gridlock at peak times is that it actually becomes easier to cross the road. Adopt the posture of someone hailing a taxi at the roadside: With an arm outstretched and pointing downwards slightly, flap your hand and proceed gingerly. Surprisingly, the traffic will give way, for interaction between road users is ultimately a non-contact sport.
Compare this with the far more dangerous position that exists in some of the major cities that are not quite as congested as the capital. Try crossing a busy road in Surabaya, for example. The problem you will face is that the traffic, although heavy, is moving much faster than the customary snail’s pace in Jakarta, making it that much harder to find a safe gap between vehicles. You can quite easily find yourself stranded at the kerb for almost 10 minutes before it is safe to cross. A more extreme version of this problem exists where the routeing of a toll road has split a village into two or divided two communities that lie adjacent to each other. You’ve guessed it: The locals will still want to cross the road. However, vehicles will be whizzing past at anything up to 200 kilometers per hour. Judging the speed of vehicles coming directly towards you is much harder than for those viewed sideways-on. The inevitable consequence of this hardly needs to be spelt out in gory detail. Regardless of how we normally travel around the capital, we all become pedestrians at some stage. Although road conditions are likely to remain far from ideal, a little bit more consideration on both sides, by drivers for pedestrians and vice versa, will go a long way towards making the hustle and bustle of urban living that much safer all round. Milinka’s Charity
DJ Milinka has been putting her forces behind helping others with her charity called Milinka Love Movements (MLM), which we will be raising funds for at The Beat Party on Thursday May 24 at Red Square, and we thought we better find out more about the charity and what they do.
www.beatmag.com
Milinka, when was the MLM charity created and what does it do exactly? M: When my mom died in 2010, I felt that I needed to do more to help people. Losing her was unbearable. She always taught me to be a strong person and also to help people. She also helped loads of people when she was alive. I came up with the name “Milinka Love Movements” and did two charity events that year. I’ve had more time lately and since December last year I’ve done events once a month in a different city in Indonesia and hopefully will do some more in Europe this summer. What does it do? M: Milinka Love Movements is actually sharing ideas, feelings, helping others and also helping our own awareness of who we are by doing MLM
activities. Milinka Love Movements means: love yourself, love your family and love your life. Once I did a charity event for AIDS victims and hope one day we can share my ideas to educate people about aids in remote areas in Indonesia. Once I did a charity to help poor kids living on the street for their education costs, once I did a speech in a primary school motivating them to reach their dreams as much as they could, as many people are holding back their goals or dreams. At this moment there are many new jobs available, such as DJing, designing clothing, being a professional makeup artist, EO, being a lighting and sound technicians, and bartending. These jobs can now create a good future as well. I teach kids to be brave and make their dreams come true. As long as it is “halal/legal” and doesn’t harm people. Why not? Right?
f e a t u r e
043
Who controls or decides what happens with the funds raised? M: Me. And what do you do with the funds exactly? M: We give it to local people who really need it. Are there any success stories since you began MLM? M: Success can be meaningful. When I did some charity in Aceh it wasn’t easy as it is a Muslim city. I helped them by raising funds in a club. And in the end I could help the local orphanage to eat for six months. They accepted my help and the media helped also. But my goal is to have an international foundation or help people not only in Indonesia… So in regard to this, I’m still far away from success. Aren’t there enough problems and causes to fight for just here in Indonesia? M: Yes… Actually too much to handle, but since I’m going to travel a lot across the world, why not do something good for the local people there as well.
M: At this point by doing free gigs and sharing profits with the events, which go to the MLM charity. We also have a charity box and ticket shares. You were in Bengkulu a couple of weeks ago. What was going on there? M: The same things I did in Aceh. Fund raising and give the money to local orphanage
What’s the next project you will be working on? M: For Milinka Love Movements I will do in Bangka Belitung on June. And July I will do in Serbia. My father’s country.

Wait, wait, stop right there, smile and click!” Those are the words, we often hear when we want to capture a moment as an image. Our whole society is now exposed to photography which has naturally become a sizeable part of everyday life. With gadgets from smartphones to computer tablets containing a built in camera, its almost as if we’re never more than a few feet away from one.
If you do wish to know more about the roots and techniques of good photography, many courses are offered in Jakarta and one in particular and out of the ordinary, is offered by a famous photographer named Anton Ismael. He offers his courses for free to anybody interested for a whole year, but there’s a catch. The course takes place at 6am in the morning and lasts until 9am two times a week. It might think it’s difficult to wake up to go to the gym, but imagine waking up to take a free class that teaches you the various aspects of photography. Well, at least it’s cool at that time of the morning! So grab a camera, find out more and start taking those awesome pictures!
www.beatmag.com
Back in the old days, before digital cameras, photography was both expensive and primitive. We had to buy film that could not be wasted greatly affecting how many shots you could take and making it a costlier hobby. But as time flies before our eyes, technology has given us many user-friendly gadgets that have also given us the chance to take lots of images. This is why, the trend of photography is everywhere and anyone can simply capture a picture. Provided with many applications that help you design and enhance your pictures to look brighter, classy or even vintage and now all is affordable and available to just about anybody.

A Romantic Evening 19 May 2012 starting from 19.30 onwards Aula Simfonia Jakarta For more information: +6221-6586 7808 or www.aulasimfoniajakarta.com
www.beatmag.com
By Erza S.T. fter previewing many of Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s regular concerts (as well as other concerts in Jakarta), my editor started to wonder if there is any concert that is not only focused on baroque and classical music. With such a long history of Western classical music, how come Jakarta always chooses Bach, Mozart and Beethoven compositions on its concert program all the time? Luckily, every now and then there are concerts that take risks and come out from their comfort zone. This time, it is Aula Simfonia Jakarta that is surprising us with their unusual upcoming
concert program on May 19. Instead of keeping it consistent with “heavenly music repertoires (read: Bach, Haydn, Handel and Beethoven), this time Aula Simfonia Jakarta decided to up the ante by choosing repertoires from the romantic period. Romanticism here has nothing to do with romance or love, though that theme was common in many works composed during this time period. Romanticism here is more of an artistic, literary and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the early 19th century. Its purpose is to increase emotional expression and power to describe deeper truths
The resident orchestra: Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra led under Dr. Stephen Tong chose Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 (known as the Scottish Symphony) to be the opening. Mendelssohn, who was composing during the early romantic period, drew his inspiration for this symphony after seeing a painting on his Scottish trip. Dedicated to Queen Victoria, this symphony has a grand first movement, a joyous second movement that is influenced by Scottish folk music. The program follows with an exciting yet powerful symphonic poem of Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia”. This piece was originally composed for the Press Celebrations of 1899 as a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire. Going towards the end of this symphony you can hear calm comes over the orchestra and the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn is played. This composition is very popular
The last composition on this ‘romantic’ concert program is perhaps the most thrilling one of all and is the most famous: Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Many professional pianists dream of performing this composition. This piece in particular is one of Rachmaninoff’s most enduringly popular pieces and established his fame as a concerto composer. However this composition is not an easy work for him. Compounded by problems in his personal life, Rachmaninoff fell into a depression that lasted for several years. The second piano concerto confirmed his recovery from clinical depression and writer’s block. He dedicated this work to Nikolai Dahl, a physician who had restored his self-confidence. A young and talented pianist name Indah Lestari Hertanto who graduated from Towson University in Maryland, USA will perform as the solo pianist to play this defiant piece. Like Sibelius’ Finlandia, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is also a popular movie soundtrack and has appeared in movies such as Nodame Cantabile and Clint Eastwood’s 2010 film Hereafter.

There are plenty of great monumental works created during this period of Western classical music. Aula Simfonia Jakarta chose some great works made by Sibelius, Mendelssohn and Rachmaninoff to represent the sound of music from this great period.
and used as movie soundtracks including the 1990 Bruce Willis blockbuster: Die hard 2 - Die Harder.
It is not that often that Aula Simfonia Jakarta chooses such a refreshing program like this one. I hope there will be more in the future…

ince its opening in late 2009, Bibliotheque has been creating a stir in the local restaurant scene. Known for having one of the most beautiful and grand interiors in town, it has become the congregation point for the beautiful set of Jakarta. The high ceiling is quite a sight itself and the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves are amazing. The comfy, oversize leather sofas and dark wood furnishings only add a certain splendor to the place.
With a dazzling décor and very tantalizing menu, Bibliotheque the place to be in Jakarta!
Currently, the restaurant’s new management has come up with a new, cozier concept, with more emphasis on the food and beverages. Bibliotheque Restaurant & Lounge’s new executive chef, Zul, employs the freshest ingredients and contemporary techniques to please the restaurant’s discriminating diners.
Our epicurean experience here began with the House Smoked Salmon (95k); Norwegian salmon, sliced a la minute, and served with Philadelphia cream cheese, capers and onions, and pain de Champagne bread. The salmon was marinated and left for 48 hours, and then smoked for 4 1/2 hours more. With its own smoking machine for the salmon, you know that Bibliotheque pay special attention to details when it comes to their food. A wonderful starter. Another fish dish, the tataki-style Sesame Crusted Rare Tuna (120k) is served with shimeji mushrooms and asparagus. It is also a popular item here.

Don’t forget to accompany yourself with some of the restaurant’s signature cocktails such as the tasty Exotic Mango (90k); a mixture of Malibu mango rum, Absolut Mango, a little bit of sweet and sour, and some mango puree, or the Magic Winter (90k); a visual treat of sweet concoction made with Absolut Raspberry, strawberry liquor, Crème de Cacao White Bols, fresh milk, and some fresh strawberries.

The 36 Hour Braised Lamb Shoulder (195k) was next to arrive on our table. It is served with Flageolet beans puree, Kalamata olives, and grilled eggplant. A popular item in French cooking, the Flageolet beans were pureed and seasoned with thyme, garlic, and chicken stock. It sure was a welcomed change from the usual mashed potatoes. The lamb shoulder itself was done sous-vide; very evenly and not over cooked, retaining all the juiciness. In one word: Sublime!
Cigar aficionados can also rejoice with More for the carnivore in you, the Braised Beef Bibliotheque’s extensive collection of cigars. Let’s start our culinary journey with some pinchos or Spanish bar snacks which are traditional in northern Spain, especially in the Basque country. Related to tapas, they’re called pinchos because many of them have a pincho (Spanish for spike), usually a toothpick through them. We began with a trio of pinchos: Montadito de Ternera con Queso Azul y Cebolla Caramelizada - ternderloin, blue cheese, and caramelized onion (25k), Brocheta de Guacamole y Gambas Ajillo garlic shrimps and guacamole (25k), and Huevo Sobre Anchoas con Cebolla y Perejil - eggs over anchovies with onion and parsley (17.5k). We also had Esparagos Envueltos en Hojaldre con Ali Oli - baked asparagus wrapped in puff pastry with ali oli (17.5k). All are scrumptious starters.
risotto-style dish. The fabulous Chuletas de Cordero con Ali Oli - Grilled Lamb Cutlets with Garlic Mayonnaise (85k) is simply an outstanding dish. Paella is an iconic Spanish rice dish, native to Valencia. The Paella de Marisco - Seafood Paella (295k) is a perfect way of sharing. It’s like a party in a 24-cm diameter pan! The preparation takes about 30 minutes, but well worth the wait; a magnificent melange of rice, herbs, spices, and seafood. Of course, you’ve got to try the superb Spanish wine and fruit concoction, Sangria (250k by the jug) here! And the Mojito (75k by glass, 450k by the jug) is also noteworthy. Tapas Movida also prides itself of having an extensive collection of all-Spanish wine, with no less than 38 brands available. Make room for the Postres or desserts: the Peras Escalfadas - Poached Pears and the Platano Caramelizado - Caramelized Banana (both 40k, respectively) are both sweet picks. Yes, they do have the Churros con Chocolate – Spanish Fried doughnut strips. But they’re actually more of a breakfast treat. Speaking of which, Tapas Movida is open daily at 9 am should you feel like having a Spanish-style breakfast.
Every Monday at 12.30 pm, you can learn to dance Flamenco here. But if you just feel like Alongside tapas, you’ll also find raciones, which watching, Monday evening is the time to catch are often just a larger portion of the tapas, a Flamenco performance. apas is a variety of snacks or appetizers, a true celebration of the Spanish culture and social way of life. Tapas Movida is reminiscent of a beautiful Mediterranean restaurant and bar. Dark wood elegantly dominates the interior. The patio area, with its tile-laden seats, is especially gorgeous. There are only a handful of tapas eateries in Jakarta, but Spanish Executive Chef Manuel Verdaguer makes sure you’ll have an authentic Spanish epicurean experience at Tapas Movida. Since opening in mid-2011, the flavorsome paellas and host of tapas never fail to lure diners back time and time again.

Tough Guys Don’t Cry

Do tough guys cry when being hurt? Supposedly not, but they cope with the suffering in their own ways. You want to be tough? Safe Action, Crime Thriller. Writer & Directors: Boaz Yakin. Cast: Jason Statham, Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon, Robert John Burke, Anson Mount. An ex cage fighter whose life was destroyed by mobsters crosses paths with a young Chinese girl with secret codes sought after by the same Russian gang. Who comes in your mind to play the tough guy role? Correct, Statham is definitely a good answer! With an action-crime flick like this, expect nothing with numerous twists in its story line. You just need to sit back and prepare for some adrenaline with chases, gunshots and bare fists… and the occasional popcorn!
Corolianus Drama, Thriller. Director: Ralph Fiennes. Writer: John Logan. Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, Vannes Redgrave, Jessica Chastain, James Nesbitt.
More and more senior actors are turning into directors and starring in the films they direct. It definitely raises an eyebrow when a former star of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Ralph Fiennes, the guy who played Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter, is both directing and in the leading role. “Corolianus” might be one of Shakespeare’s least liked plays, but renowned scriptwriter John Logan (Gladiator, Sweeney Todd) screenplay and Fiennes’ excellent directing make this modern retelling of a classic relevant in its political and military plot. Because the lines are from the original Shakespeare play, this movie is not for those with poor language skills or an aversion to 16th century English.
50/50 Drama, Comedy. Director: Jonathan Levine. Writer: Will Reiser. Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anjelica Huston. Inspired by the writer Will Reiser’s own true experiences with cancer, 50/50 is the story of a guy’s, Adam’s, transformational and funny journey with cancer. With true friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, they are indeed the greatest remedies in life. Despite the depressing premise, this film will surely make you smile and also laugh. So live life to the fullest and watch 50/50!

Is Kiehl’s Really Slashing Their
Prices?
www.beatmag.com
By: AmaliaHayati
There are several Kiehl’s products that I’m so fond of, especially its toner, but the price differences between here and in the US have made me reluctant to purchase it. It’s as big as 56% percent! But Kiehl’s current prices don’t differ much from those overseas. So no need to go through all the hassle to get it overseas for a fair price. Cheryl Vitali, Worldwide General Manager of Kiehl’s, commented on the lowered price scheme. “As a result of our global expansion, we are currently in over 900 points of sale and have gained significant efficiencies in the costs of doing business. As part of our customer-centered approach to business, it has always been our goal to offer accessible pricing in all of our markets. It is, therefore, our great pleasure to be able to share some of that success with our customers in the form of new lower prices on our products in Indonesia.”

couldn’t believe my ears when I heard the rumour that Kiehl’s is slashing their prices. Is it even possible? Turns out, it’s true! Kiehl’s has really decrease their prices.
Kiehl’s recipe is simple, “We do no advertising and use simple, utilitarian packaging so that we may concentrate our efforts and costs on what is truly important – the efficacy and quality of our formulations.” added Vitali.
Are you planning to get anything now that the price has been reduced?

Jack White Blunderbuss
Wonderful Wow
Poor old Jack White. A cursory listen to brand new solo album Blunderbuss would suggest that he hasn’t been having a very good time lately in the romance department. Recently divorced from partner of six years, Karen Elston and no longer gracing stages with sister/ex wife Meg White (depending on which tabloid you’ve been reading), it’s understandable that he may be feeling a tad miffed with the fairer sex.
Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
However, if it’s a string of soppy breakup ballads you’re expecting, think again, as Blunderbuss bashes us about the head with love in its most destructive, inequitable form. “I want love to roll me over slowly / stick a knife inside me / and twist it all around” he sneers on Love Interruption, clearly still smarting from the breakup. All of this should be taken with a pinch of salt though, as the erstwhile White Stripe, occasional Raconteur and country duet aficionado is well known for flinging around a bit of artistic license in the name of blues “authenticity”. “I’m Bo Diddly” he boasts on the rockabilly I’m Shakin’ - tongue stuck firmly in cheek to make sure no one takes him too seriously. It’s also worth noting that Elston sings backup on a couple of the tracks, so I suspect things aren’t all that bad for our Jack. Musically, Blunderbuss will slide in perfectly between The White Stripes’ DIY garage blues and the Raconteurs’ indie swagger on your record shelf - White’s caterwauling screech powering along tracks like Missing Pieces and the most White-Stripesy track on the album Sixteen Saltines. By track four though he really hits his stride, with Love Interruption, Blunderbuss and Hypocritical Kiss providing a glorious suite of country blues, all washed in sweeping Nashville piano and pared down acoustic guitar. While no great departure from the kind of music we’ve all come to expect from this inimitable musician, Blunderbuss succeeds in being a fantastically inventive ode to broken-hearted blues for those who just don’t do soppy. All wrapped up in a slim aircraft-grade aluminum jacket equipped with two tripod mounts (for portrait or landscape shots). To switch between lenses just rotate the disc! Best part: the lenses never leave your phone, so they’re always at the ready. Use the 0.7x wide angle for sweeping landscapes or get fun warped images with the 0.33x fisheye. Switch to the 1.5x Telephoto and get nearly two times closer to your subject. Wowza. photojojo.com $249

Breadmaker This breadmaker bakes golden-brown, flavorful artisanal bread and was the easiest to use. The Best Breadmaker baked white, wheat, and cinnamon raisin loaves with moist, airy interiors and crisp crusts, unlike other units that produced dry loaves with barely browned exteriors. The Best Breadmaker automatically incorporates dried fruit, nuts, or herbs at the proper time, unlike other models that require the user to manually add additional ingredients. Scoring highest for features, The Best model has a backlit LCD control panel that allows users to quickly select a light, medium, or dark brown crust, the size of the loaf (1 to 2 1/2-lbs) and the type of bread. The Best model automatically kneads the dough, allows it to rise, “punches” it down, and bakes it to the preferred settings. www. hammacher.com $249.95

There’s a new mall on the beach in Kuta for those of you that love to shop and tan at the same time. Sahid Kuta Lifstyle Resort has opened up Beachwalk, a 3.7 hectare retail and lifestyle hub for tourists and locals to enjoy. The mall was architecturally inspired by rice field terraces and has an eco friendly low rise design and large open spaces. They’ll be food vendors, they’ll be shops… but what we at The Beat are most excited about is a new XXI Cineplex! This will be the first new theater in Bali in over 10 years! Another notable venue is the Sienna Café brought to Beachwalk by Ku De Ta. Now that’s what I call dinner and a movie.

Rich underwater bio system brought to surface Despite its sheer size and wealth of its natural biomarine population, the coral reef system in Pacific region, which is half as big as the United States, has not enjoyed its rightful status as the world’s largest coral reef region known as the Coral Reef Triangle; hence the conservation effort hasn’t been as it should be. The WWF together with Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) are trying to bring awareness to a wider audience by launching the Coral Triangle Day on June 9. The Coral Triangle Day will be celebrated with events held simultaneously in six countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and other countries in the Pacific. During the one-day celebration ocean conservation themed activities like beach clean-ups; sustainable seafood dinners; exhibitions; bazaars; and beach parties, among others will be conducted at different locations within the region. More info on the event can be accessed at www.coraltriangle.com

Lunchtime is a casual event, with the cool air conned family-friendly restaurant buzzing with welcoming wait staff a nice respite from the midday beach heat. I meet up with a good mate who’s keen to sample some of the HRC goodness, and we immediately get chatting over a signature hurricane (109k++) from the ‘keepers’ section of the drink menu, and a wild berry smoothie (109k++) from the ‘alternative rock’ list. All drinks come in a special souvenir glass, which for just a little extra coin you can take home with you when you’re done.
Dessert-wise we split a portion of the home made hot fudge brownies (99k++) that are all the things a good brownie should be – warm and gooey on the inside, a little crispy on the outside, and most importantly, doused in creamy HaagenDazs ice cream. Amazeballs.
A massive sharing plate of HRC’s famous nachos (119k++) opens play for the day – the crunchy imported corn chips completely smothered in home made pico de gallo, jalapenos, ranch beans and sour cream. Highly recommended.
Don’t forget to use your BCA credit card if you have one, as every time you swipe at HRC you could be in with a chance of winning two allexpenses paid tickets to the Hard Rock Calling concert in London this 13-15 July.
On to the mains and it’s a tough choice but we eventually order up the hickory-smoked bbq Dan Ashcroft pork ribs (259k++) and the legendary burger (169k++). Ordinarily 10oz of imported Aussie beef with crispy bacon and cheese in a fresh burger bun would be impossible to beat, but when it’s up against an 800gm rack of slow roasted pork ribs it starts to get pretty difficult to choose a favourite…

he D’Bagindas had the audience at Akasaka screaming for more. When they played their hits, the crowd sang along with them. It was a very interactive event. The band, known for their hit ‘Cinta’, looked like they were enjoying their second concert at the venue. They were also really approachable that night and didn’t mind it when fans wanted to take pictures with them. The singer even jumped off the stage just to get amongst them.

Hard rock café Thursday 03 May
T
he four piece rock band from the US, Vertical Horizon took to the Hard Rock Café stage in Kuta last night. In an intimate but rocking performance, Matt Scannell (vocals/guitar), Steve Fekete (guitars), Ron LaVella (drums), and newcomer Cedric Lemoyne (bass), held the not large but respectable crowd spellbound for about an hour and a half. The solid American rock style went down well in the hallowed grounds of HRC and why wouldn’t it? Scannell has some of the best rock vocals you could ever hope to hear and the technicians nailed the sound down perfectly. It was a crisp, clear sound and Scannell got to work some aural magic in the spaces created by the guitar based band. Classic moments were their big hits, “The Best I Ever Had”, “All is Said and Done”, “Everything You Want”, “Forever” and a couple of tracks off their new album, Burning The Days.
