We’d like to thank everyone for coming to The Beat Party last week at Red Square. It was a total blast. Thanks also to the sponsors for getting right behind it and supplying a mind boggling freeflow that lasted beyond two hours and really charged the rest of the night. Dekuyper, Watershed wines, Absolut and Heineken. Also thanks to the DJs, James Sullivan and Milinka for giving their all, and you folks, the beat believers, for turning up and having a rockin’ good time. I must say it still continues being difficult to get people out early for an event in this town or, from my experience, anywhere else in Indonesia for that matter. There must be an unwritten law somewhere saying that people can’t dance before midnight or is it just that the body needs x amount of time in darkness before the wilder beast comes out in them? This could be true as the nocturnal side of us all appears to be hitting its straps well into the wee hours and the late night starts will be with us for some time to come. This week we have a few major acts coming our way. There’s Max Graham and Emma Hewitt playing back to back nights at Voyeur Club at Illigals. Emma Hewitt who features on our cover this week will surely bring the house down like she did at the Warehouse show last year. And speaking of major dance music vocalists, Nadia Ali makes her way to Immigrant the following weekend. Everybody must remember ‘Rapture’, well she’s here for one night only. Since Avicii brought that track back again last year to a new generation it’s sure to be packed. We’ve also got another edition of The Beat BBQ and Sunset Party at Liquid Exchange on Sunday June 10. More laid back fun and great food on the deck of Lex and going well into the night. Everybody welcome. Have a fun couple of weeks and we’ll see you around the traps.

Barney Space adventures If your children love the cute purple dinosaur, Barney, it’s time to take them to see the Barney Space Adventures on June 14 thru 17 at Skeeno Exhibition Hall, Gandaria City 3rd floor. Barney will appear with the other characters in a drama that will be staged several times a day. On June 14, the show will come on at 2pm and 5pm. On June 15, the show times will be at 10.30 am, 1.15 pm and 4 pm. There will be two shows on June 17 respectively at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm. Come and enjoy the show with the little ones even though you’ll most likely be contemplating throwing yourself off the nearest cliff the whole time. Ahmad Dhani & Indonesian All Stars On June 13, 2012 Ahmad Dhani will throw a concert titled “Ahmad Dhani and Indonesian All Stars” in Plenary Hall in the Jakarta Convention Center. The concert that will stage the Dewa 19 reunion also serves as celebration of Dhani’s 20-year career in the music industry as well as his birthday. A slew of the so called Indonesian Stars like Agnes Monica, Afghan, Marcell, Mulan Jameela, Mahadewa, TRIAD, The Virgin, and Mahadewi will join Ahmad Dhani on stage. Dhani would also take the fans down memory lane with a special appearance by Dewa 19, featuring their original vocalist, Ari Lasso.

Cherrybelle Brand New Day Concert We in Indonesia also have a kind of girlband heavily influenced by Korean K-Pop. Cherrybelle or Chibi was formed from a series of auditions. The girlband now consists of Angel, Anisa, Cherly, Christy, Felly, Gigi, and Ryn, (that’s a lot of casting couches) and will make a concert titled Cherrybelle Brand New Day Concert at JITEC Mangga Dua Square on June 9. In this concert, Chibi also invites some aspiring artists and legendary musicians, such as Coboy Jr., Dragon Boyz, Ari Lasso, and Indonesian music legend Vina Panduwinata. Are you twibi and twiboys? LA Lights returns with LA Lights Meet the Labels, an audition session and a very good opportunity for talented bands, duets, and solo performers to meet directly with five big music labels such as Alfa Records, Warner Music Indonesia, E-motion, Aquarius, and Seven Music which was responsible for the success of many of the country’s top notch artists.

LA Lights Meet the Labels
In 2011, LA Lights Meet the Labels discovered a talented group of musicians like Lyric Band from Banjarmasin and Jakarta’s Joshua Mars. Record labels like Warner Music Indonesia and Seven Music quickly picked up Lyric Band and Joshua Mars respectively. LA Lights Meet the Labels will be held at cities across Indonesia, including: Surabaya (June 9), Yogyakarta (June 30), Banjarmasin (July 7), Medan (September 1), Bali (September 8), Balikpapan (September 15), and Pontianak (September 22).
Trisakti Flair Open Trisakti Flair Open is a regional level event to serve as an outlet for all those bar performers to nurture their skills in flairing and mixing drinks. The aesthetics of drink presentation, the main feature of the program, requires skill, knowledge and experience common in the hospitality and tourism industries. The event will be held on May 29 at Brewhouse Jakarta, in Senayan City from 11am. This is a great opportunity to give support to and enjoy Indonesian bartenders at their best.
The flow of Korean stars, known as K-Pop, to Jakarta seems to never end. Now a Korean singer named Kim Junsu AKA Xiah Junsu is ready to rock on the city. Hailing from South Korea, the song writer and, of course, actor was a member of a boyband named TVXQ and is currently strutting his stuff with JYJ. Junsu and his solo project will do his first Asian tour and will perform at JITEC, Mangga Dua Square on Saturday June 16 at 7pm. So if you are a Koreaphile, streak in some hair dye, apply lots of gel, wear something pastel, squint your eyes, and we’ll see you there.

Rizkie Kharisma, nama asli DJ Rizkie, memiliki minat yang besar terhadap dance music hingga terdorong untuk belajar menjadi DJ dari sang kakak. Kerja kerasnya terbayarkan melalui debut sebagai resident DJ di 1001 Shanghai Diva. Setelah itu, berkat jam terbang yang tinggi, Rizkie banyak diminta untuk memegang posisi resident DJ di beberapa klab. Iapun sempat menjadi instruktur DJ di Extreem DJ School yang berlokasi di Mangga Dua. Klab lain di luar Jakarta yang pernah jadi persinggahannya adalah Cheers Purwokerto dan Retrospective Medan. Kini Rizkie berlabuh di Liquid Exchange sebagai resident DJ sejak setahun lalu. Rizkie Kharisma, DJ Rizkie’s given name, is very passionate about dance music and learnt how to DJ from his brother. His hard work eventually paid off when he debuted as a resident DJ at 1001 Shanghai Diva. Later, after racking up quite a lot of playing hours, other clubs came looking for his services. Rizkie had also been a DJ instructor at Extreme DJ School in Mangga Dua. He had stints at clubs outside Jakarta such as Cheers Purwokerto and Retrospective Medan, before eventually ending up as resident DJ at Liquid Exchange last year.

Max lahir di London namun sempat berpindah tinggal di Spanyol, Amerika dan akhirnya bermukim di Ottawa. Pada saat usianya 15 tahun, Max mulai belajar sebagai DJ Hip Hop dan Scratch DJ sebelum terjun ke dance Music tahun 1992. Satu track karyanya yang berjudul ‘Airtight’, dinominasikan untuk Juno award tahun 2001 dan berlanjut ke kompilasi mix ‘Tranceport #4’ yang juga meraih kesuksesan. Namanya pun masuk dalam peringkat 23 DJ Mag, dan musiknya yang mencampur antara progressive, techno, disco, dan trance, dibumbui oleh elemen bass, rhythm dan melodi yang sangat enerjik di setiap setnya. Satu remix yang semakin membuat namanya meroket adalah ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’ di tahun 2005 dan kompilasi album mix terkini adalah Cycles3 yang rilis tahun 2011 lalu. Max pernah tampil di Jakarta beberapa tahun silam. Max Graham was originally born in London, but got to move to Ottawa via Spain and the US. When he was 15, Max started off spinning hip hop and scratching before settling for dance music in 1992. One of his tracks, ‘Airtight’, was nominated in the Juno Awards in 2001 and his mix compilation ‘Tranceport #4’ was also successful. His was ranked at number 23 by DJ Mag and his music is a mix between progressive, techno, disco, and trance, with some added bass, rhythm, and melodical elements. One of his remixes that achieved considerable success was his ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’ rendition in 2005. His latest mix compilation album was Cycles3 which was released in 2011.

Awalnya, Emma adalah vokalis dari sebuah grup rock bernama Missing Hours di Australia dan pernah meluncurkan album pada tahun 2008. Walaupun dia merupakan vokalis rock, tahun 2007, Emma pernah berkolaborasi dengan DJ Chris Lake dalam track genre musik progressive house yang berjudul ‘Carry Me Away’ dan hitsnya menembus tanggal lagu di Spanyol, Finlandia, dan tentunya masuk di Billboard Hot Dance Airplay di Amerika. Namun, dengan berbagai alasan dan ingin lebih fokus kepada penggemar setia atau Slankers, konser ini dipindah menjadi hari Jumat dan bertempat di Ballroom Ritz Carlton Pacific Place. Antrian diluar sudah memanjang sejak awal malam dan karena di dalam Lobby yang sejuk, membuat penonton menjadi nyaman mengantri. Konsep yang dituang dalam konser
yang hasilnya disumbangkan untuk penderita HIV ini sangat menarik, yaitu Slank dipadu dengan orkestra yang dipimpin oleh sang konduktor Indra Perkasa. Acara bergulir dengan tampilnya rekan dari Slank seperti Naif, Alexa, Pure Saturday, dan Dira Sugandi membawakan lagu milik Slank dengan aransemen berbeda. Setelah itu, berulah tampil dengan diiringi oleh Orkestra dan di penghujung acara, Slank berkolaborasi dengan musisi pendukung. Tampil dalam konsep apapun, Slank tetap salah satu band Indonesia terhebat.
Slank is inarguably one of the greatest legendary rock groups in Indonesia. To commemorate their 28 years in the business, the band staged a concert in on May 12, with proceeds being donated to people living with HIV. The venue was originally going to be Ancol but later changed to the Ritz Carlton Ballroom at the Pacific Place to provide a more pleasant experience for their fans. The concert featured Slank and their friends performing songs backed up by an orchestra conducted by Indra Perkasa. Sure enough, a long line of fans formed in the air-conditioned lobby early in the evening. The show was opened by friends of the group like Naif, Alexa, Pure Saturday, and Dira Sugandi taking on Slank’s catalog with their respective interpretation. At the end of the evening, the men of the hour, Kaka, Bimbim, Abdee, Ridho, and Ivan came on the stage to perform with guest musicians and orchestra. Slank succeeded to show their versatility and the performance served as a testament of their status as one of Indonesia’s greatest bands.

Lagu ‘This Love’ milik Maroon 5 menjadi pembuka dan juga ‘Kaulah Segalanya’ yang ada di albumnya juga dilantunkan. Setelah itu, alur acara pun mengalir dengan sentimental dengan hadirnya deretan hits milik Sammy yang suaranya membius pengunjung di Club Voyeur pada malam itu. He was followed by the beautiful DJ Yasmin who worked the floor to the point where they were all ready for DJ Zoka. Zoka succeeded to keep the momentum going before the night’s event was brought to a close by a resident DJ.

Sebanyak enam DJ internasional dengan beragam genre musik tampil sejak pukul 9 malam, mereka adalah Supernova, Moto Blanco, Oscar de Rivera, David Morales, Daniel Kandi dan sebagai penutup adalah John 00 Fleming. Pengunjung datang perlahan namun pasti, dan acara dimulai pada pukul 6 sore hingga 6 pagi dengan menggulirkan musik dari mulai house, tech house, techno, hingga progressive trance. Selamat untuk Fable atas soft openingnya.
Wonderland, which was also a soft opening event for Fable, was originally meant to be held in two areas, at Fairgrounds and at Fable. The Fairground portion ended up being canceled and the event was solely at Fable. Six international DJs performed at 9pm, they were Supernova, Moto Blanco, Oscar de Rivera, David Morales, Daniel Kandi, and the last but not least John 00 Fleming. The guests came slowly but surely to the event that started at 6pm and ended at 6am in the morning with house, tech house, techno, and progressive trance pounding all night.

Is Jakarta A Class Act Yet?
In a sense, the damage to the capital’s reputation has already been done. Regardless of whether the would-be Gaga gaggers were religious hardliners or simply pawns (as rumoured) in the tough competition that exists between concert promoters, the world media has already started to report the story in a rather unflattering way: Jakarta is now seen as a place that lacks the inclusiveness and tolerance of diversity that are essential features of any world-class city. But that’s only a small part of a much bigger picture. Any city aspiring to gain admission to this rather exclusive club has to pass muster on a range of criteria. The first stage in this process is to stand out within the region.
Last year, for example, the Jakarta International Film Festival (JiFFest), which had really put the city on the map in previous years, was cancelled by its organizers, whereas the equivalents in Singapore and Bangkok are now highly regarded/ anticipated events of their kind. Whilst the media here is subject to fewer restrictions over its activities than, for example, in Singapore, the way the Gaga saga is being handled has caused much hand-wringing. The litmus test, though, of the attractiveness of a city really concerns the quality of its essential infrastructure – the nuts and bolts of everyday living. While Jakarta’s broadband internet coverage and availability has improved in leaps and bounds in recent years, and everyone seems to be hard-wired to the web via smartphones, the city is badly let down by its poor or nonexistent transportation facilities.

Achieving world-class city status is not easy when the competition is tough
However, those of you who are new to the city may not be aware that UK-based, high-end department store Harvey Nichols opened up, to great fanfare, at Grand Indonesia shopping mall in the heart of the city a few years ago only to close a mere two years later. It seems market conditions in the city were not quite ready for them yet. On the other hand, some of the more innovative Indonesian start-ups in the food and beverage sector have proved so successful they are now being exported to neighbouring countries and even beyond. In the arts and entertainment field, Jakarta has acquired something of a reputation (dubious, some would say) within the region for the quality of its nightlife, yet in other respects it lags behind its rivals.
Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur all have modern airports that are a delight to use while overcrowded Soekarno-Hatta is something of a nightmare experience, especially at peak times. What is of greatest concern is that, realistically, it will be probably be at least five more years before either a new or improved airport for the capital is up and running. The situation within the city is no better. Singapore and Bangkok both have well-used mass transit systems (the MRT and Skytrain respectively) that work very efficiently most of the time and offer a welcome escape from the midday sun. Parts of Jakarta’s busway system work well but offer only a partial solution to the capital’s mass transportation headache. The construction of new roads or improved intersections offers only the most short-term relief, for it simply releases pent-up demand on roads that are already grossly overcrowded. Let’s return to the question posed in the title: The honest response, I think, is that the jury is still out ... (Jim Read)

When it comes to quality of housing, eating/drinking venues and shopping facilities, Indonesia’s capital has come a long way within the last 10 years or so and can probably hold its own.

What music are you into at the moment? Well right now I’m preparing for my first solo album. My first single, “Serasa”, is already out (by the way). So, I’ve been going back to my roots, which are in 90’s alternative/rock/grunge genre. I’ve been listening to a lot to Padi and Sheila On 7. As for international artists, I’ve been listening to Moonpools & Caterpillars, Alanis Morrisette, The Cranberries, No Doubt and Garbage. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Slank! Their first album, titled Suit Suit Hehe (Gadis Sexy), back in 1990. I was 14 years old, and in junior high school. I bought the album using my pocket money, meant for school. I heard their song “Maafkanlah” on the radio and I started to save my money to buy the album. I didn’t eat at school for like 5 days, so I could buy it. But after I bought the album I fell in love with another song called “Kalah”. Never in my whole life would I have dreamt that 13 years later, I would get to perform the same song, on stage with Slank, live for their 20th anniversary celebrations. So it was worth every penny! What is your all-time favorite album? Why? Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill. Because she’s full of angst like me. She’s basically the first female artist that, to me, was successful in creating songs/albums that manage to mix idealism with
What was the worst record you ever purchased? That has to be The Best of Tommy Page. I was 15, traveling from Jakarta to Bali with my cousins overland and somehow my driver had removed all of my cassettes from the car while cleaning it before we left for Bali. Somewhere along the way we stopped at a small town and we found a very very old school cassette shop. I was actually looking for an LA Guns album and really can’t explain why somehow all of my cousins managed to persuade me to buy Tommy Page’s album. The trip took us two days and we didn’t manage to find any other cassette shops along the way, so it was “A Shoulder to Cry On” for two days straight. I’m still traumatized by it till today...

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Everybody Loves You When You’re Dead by Neil Strauss. I give it 8 out of 10. He wrote one of the most iconic rock biographies of all time, Mötley Crüe’s The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band. He exposed the truth about many a talented pickup artist in The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists. And he’s covered some of the greatest musicians in the world for Rolling Stone, the New York Times, among many others. Neil Strauss is one of the most prolific rock writers and biographers working today. So, his next book took a natural turn—a collection of the most telling moments behind the more than 3,000-plus interviews he’s conducted over his career. Very interesting book I must say... What new movie should people see? Why? Dark Shadows. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Should I say more? What album do you choose to start your weekend? The Best of Sugar Ray. The whole album is sooo laid back and puts you in a holiday mood. Especially the song “Spinning Away”. And album you choose to end your weekend? I-Empire by Angels & Airwaves. The album is a good mood booster and makes you feel energized to start your week. “Everything’s Magic” is one of my favourites.

alking about living our lives like we were in movies, I’ve always had a soft heart for acting and living a character. Ever since I was a child, I’ve always tried to imitate a beautiful princess or even an evil witch, play a character, and imagine the scenes by heart with little cousins or closest friends.

As kids, our imagination wonders and creates a world of our own in many ways. Imagination brings us alive, free. But when we get older, we tend to forget how life was a lot more fun when imagination took us to a world of flawless actions, such as playing a part from a favorite movie or cartoon. You have to admit, we lived the moment and its exciting as hell! Surprisingly, I actually I know a few kids, or maybe, I must say, full-grown men, who actually still manage to have the time to replicate scenes from their favorite war films or even a particular military unit. Fully equipped with heavy gear, uniforms, airsoft M4 rifles, and other replica equipment, they will play a part from wellknown movies such as Black Hawk Down or Tears of the Sun. They call themselves, the Warjunkies and GRUNTS (Geared Reenactment Unit & Theatricals). They are 1:1 scale life size action figures that resemble military operators. This is all play and fun for these guys and makes it a regular event from time to time to put off stress from the real world and acts as war heroes.
This hobby has been going on since 1991 and has become quite a hobby bordering on obsession for those who want to enjoy all the fun parts of war without any of the dire consequences. On the flip side, boys will be boys and playing war with your friends is just another way to have a good time. It becomes clearer that people are still willing to just do anything to make their martial fantasies come to life. They might not go to war for real or have ever been in the military but are military fetishists and are enthused by all things martial. I really salute these guys, who really are not afraid to show their “Peter Pan” side, of not wanting to grow up, but yet, they enjoy their youth and are willing to spend serious amounts of cash to relive their boyhood fantasies. Because youthful childlike fun is sometimes the best kind, whether it be flying a remote control helicopter, building a model, or playing videogames, its all fun and games. One Little Plane
Into The Trees
E
very now and again an album comes along that slips into the soundtrack of your Wonderful Wow life as easily as a comfy old sweater, and reconfirms that the truly talented are not to be found regurgitating 80’s pop songs in front of Simon Cowell et al, but Worthy rather on the fringes quietly weaving their own musical magic with a minimum of Worthless fuss. Such is the case with second long player from UK-based, Chicago-born Kathryn Worm Fodder Bint AKA One Little Plane. Musically akin to flicking through an album of retro-tinted Polaroids, the equally nostalgic yet progressive Into the Trees conjures up snapshots of wistful childhood summers and a more carefree era. The gorgeous “She Was Out in the Water” is almost guaranteed to be ruined by inevitable overuse on American teen romance TV dramas, and “Nothing Has Changed” will probably suffer a similar fate, but let’s not hold that against her - with that breathless vocal style and the butter-wouldn’t-melt lyrics it would be hard to criticize anything about this demure songstress’ work. Sparse doesn’t even begin to describe the quiet of Into the Trees, I’ve heard more room-filling Morse code messages than “Bloom”, which consists only of a series of spacey modulated bleeps to keep Bint’s vocals company. However, unlike 2008’s stunning Until, there are a few slow burners that venture into amplified territory, with the instrumentation channeled into order by Four Tet’s Keiren Hebden on production duties, and Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood plucking the occasional bass string. With these, Bint has succeeded in evolving the One Little Plane sound – making sure to keep the magical elements first heard on Until in place, while simultaneously mixing in a new breath of maturity and confidence. It doesn’t always work as well as it could have, and on the rockier “I Know and Paper Planes” the charmingly cute vocals seem a bit lost when compared to the acoustic intimacy of tracks like “It’s Alright” and the summery pop of “Simmer Down Simmer”, but once again that feels like nitpicking when looking at the bigger impact of the album as a whole. Into The Trees has been on permanent repeat on my stereo for a week now, and is an absolute joy to listen to every time. Try it on for size - I’m pretty sure you’ll feel the same way. Dan Ashcroft

The Sound of Early Music
Before there were all the elaborate symphonies and grand operas that we know now, there was a time when music was just simple. It was the beginning of music history that is now known as the early music era.

Another great composer from the early music era is Francesco Manelli. As a Roman Baroque composer, he is recognized for his commercial operatic works such as L’Andromeda and La Maga Fulminata. In his lifetime, he composed around 11 operas though sadly all of it is lost. However Manelli’s Cantata Luciata from Musiche varie Op. 4 that was composed in 1636 is still played by musicians today. The music instruments from this era are also different then what are used now. Early instruments included the theorbo (a plucked string instrument like a long lute), lirone (a
bowed string instrument similar to cello), tiorbino (a rare stringed instrument) and arpa triapla (a medieval harp). As classical western music developed from medieval to Renaissance then Baroque, Venice became the center of musical activity. They built the first opera house there in 1637. The beautiful sound of the early music era is going to be heard in Jakarta through a performance by a French group called Le Poeme Harmonique. Founded in 1998 by Vincent Dumestre, this musical ensemble’s objective is to recreate and promote early music, in particular the music composed around 17th century. To bring the original sound from the era, the group uses rare instruments such as theorbo, lirone and tiorbino. The early 17th century French and Italian madrigal is a specialty for this group. So prepare yourself for some rare treats, as Le Poeme Harmonique will come and entertain you with the music of Monteverdi and Manelli this coming May 29 at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. It is not just a concert; the show “Venise, Des Rues Aux Palais” is a celebration of true Venetian spirit of the early music era.

rom the medieval ages up to the early Baroque period in 1600 to 1760 is what we define as early music. One of the famous composers during the early music era is Claudio Monteverdi. He is known to develop two individual styles of composition: the heritage of Renaissance polyphony and the new basso continuo technique of Baroque. His opera: L’Orfeo is often recognized as one of the earliest operas ever created in the world. It is no surprise if music historians regard Monteverdi’s work as revolutionary and marked the transition from the Renaissance style of music to the Baroque period.

Take the Luv’s Bar and Dine for example. Centrally located inside Citywalk Sudirman, close to the Sudirman/Thamrin business district, it’s a good place to weather out the rush hour storm, to have a business lunch, even to have a great party on the weekend.
The Roti Bobo (50k) is a good choice for dessert; baked bread with dark and white chocolate, accented with a bit of vanilla and cheese. Simple, yet so scrumptious. Now about the cocktails. There were some masterpiece creations that you just have to try. The Frozen Strawberry Margarita (85k) is always on top of the list of the patrons’ tipple of choice, but have a sip of the interestingly named Blueberry Cheesecake (80k)! It’s actually a blend of vodka, Blue Curaçao, some heavy cream, vanilla syrup, mint candy, white chocolate, and a bit of sweet and sour. And, if you feel like it, give it to your friend and try the multi-spirit mélange of Double K (170k); a potent mix of vodka, gin, rum, tequila, Triple Sec, bourbon, scotch, Blue Curaçao, melon liquor, coffee liquor, apricot brandy, dark rum, etc… That’ll grow hair on your chests! kay, Jakarta’s rush hour traffic can be a pain sometimes. Managing yourself around those hours is definitely an art. But thank heavens the city has lots of places to hang out after office hours and beyond that make it all just a bit more tolerable.
Luv’s is probably more known as one of the major clubbing destinations in town, but it’s more than just that. We visited them recently for a little after office gathering. And yes, for the happy hours too. Their happy hours are 4pm until 9pm with buy one get one free on beer and cocktails, and 20 percent off on wine by the bottle. Not We already made plans for another visit to Luv’s. bad at all! A weekend with Jakarta’s lovely party people here is certainly on the cards for us. We’ll see A huge bar area welcomes you as you come in. you there! The mix of purple, black, and gold gives a cozy and contemporary look to the interior. The food here is also noteworthy, created by a skillful head chef. The Caesar Salad (58k) started us off nicely; romaine lettuce, smoked beef, beef bacon bits, cheddar and parmesan cheese, croutons, and garlic bread. We also shared the Godfather Pizza (80k); a blend of smoked beef, ground beef, smoked chicken, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese, a meat lover’s delight! And if you can handle the heat, try the hot Gigolo Pizza (80k); sausage, pesto mix, mozzarella and Gorgonzola cheeses, plus a generous amount of chilies, including some chili padi which give quite a kick!
The Oxtail Soup (85k) is another firm favorite here at Luv’s; you can choose your oxtail to be baked, boiled, or fried, and topped with a tasty, spicy Padang sauce.

The Rib Eye Steak (200k) also made its way to our table and into our gullets; succulent Australian rib eye, doused with Luv’s black pepper sauce, accompanied by some mixed veggies and a good change from the ol’ French fries, some waffle fries. Nice touch there.

The interior of this restaurant has a simple, minimalist charm with a touch of quirkiness thrown in for good measure. Black and white tiles are juxtaposed nicely with the light wood furniture and colorful wall decorations. Check out the Andy Warhol-esque cow painting and ‘Keep Calm…’ posters. It is a fun and casual restaurant and the cozy vibe can only come when an eatery is run by a family of passionate food lovers. The food is the real star here, though and by the look of the lunch-time crowd on our visit, Mel’s has become the new place to go for good steaks.The pungent aroma of grilled meat in the air invited us to come in to this smallish but comfy place.

Mel is actually the name of the mother of the restaurant’s owner. The family likes to have barbeque parties and Mel herself came up with the special signature sauce. Leaning a bit more towards Asian than Western flavor, it is a tasty blend of spice, tang, and sweetness you’ll simply have to try. Other sauces available here are the Black Pepper, Barbeque, Creamy Mushroom, and another one of Mel’s specialties, the Mel’s Mint Tomato Sauce. You can also choose the sides of potatoes, coleslaw, and sautéed vegetables to accompany your choice of meat.
The Short Ribs (69k) is one of their best selling dishes; 200 grams of US short ribs, bone in, with Mel’s signature sauce. We also liked the Lamb Chops (65k); 240 grams of New Zealand Lamb Chops, marinated overnight with Mel’s olive oil and rosemary based recipe, served with Mel’s tangy and tasty mint tomato sauce. Most excellent! Can’t decide? You can have a bit of both with the Mel’s Mix and Match (79k), a combo plate of the short ribs and lamb chops. Mel’s Wagyu selections are also noteworthy. Try the Mel’s Wagyu Sirloin (99k); 190 grams of Australian Wagyu steak, with a marbling grade of 4-5, glazed with Mel’s special recipe, or the Mel’s Eco Wagyu Special (69k); 190 grams of Australian wagyu rump cut. Both are superb choices. If you’re in a bit of a budget, the Mel’s Patty (35k) could be the answer; beef patty simmered in delicious mushroom sauce, served with fries or mashed potato and sautéed vegetables. You can wash it down with the Mel’s Ice Peach Tea (9k or with free refills at 17k), a very refreshing drink. And if you have room for desserts, go for the colorful Rainbow Cake (30k). At Mel’s, the service is friendly, the prices are affordable, and the steaks are just scrumptious. This is a homey steak house that has won the hearts of Jakarta’s foodies. always loved Burberry perfumes. I don’t own all of them but the ones I have fall into my alltime favorite scents. I also love the ones I try on when I go to the mall or the ones that my friends wear – be it the Burberry Classic, Burberry Brit, Burberry Beat, Burberry Weekend, Burberry Summer and more. I think it all started with the image I have for the brand. Whenever I think about Burberry, the image of a chic aristocratic English lady comes to mind. Along with the iconic trench coat, the classic beige and black check, its rich history, and basically, the London charm. The recent Burberry perfume I tried is its latest fragrance: Burberry Body. I’ve wanted to smell it since I heard about their much talkedabout campaign to distribute samples to 7.6 millions of Burberry’s Facebook fans. Christopher Bailey was quoted that Burberry Body captures all the modernity and heritage of the Burberry brand today, reflecting all the facets that make up the Burberry world.

Now that they’re available in Indonesia, I immediately snatched one for myself and sprayed it on my wrist. At the first sniff, I was afraid that it was going to be too sweet for my taste, but a few short minutes later, it turned into a warm woody smell that blends well with my body scents. I am no perfume connoisseur so I can’t give you a thorough break down on the different notes it brings, but I do adore the smell. It has a strong smell without being overpowering, so I don’t have to worry about the headache I usually get with a very strong scent. I think the scent can be categorized into a mature type that somehow makes me feel like a wellmannered woman whenever I’m wearing it. If you’re looking for a new fragrance, this one is certainly worth your consideration.

THE NEW POWERHOUSE NAME IN INDONESIA FASHION SCENE By: AmaliaHayati
T
he Indonesian fashion line Isis, though fairly new in the market, have gained recognition both nationally and internationally. We visited their workshop atop the SkyStoreinc in Kemang to get the inside scoop of their beginnings, where they are now and their plans for the future. Isis is the brainchild of Andrea Risjad with the young fashion designer Amot Syamsuri Muda and is a partnership made in heaven. Andrea’s unique, creative and easy-going luxury style inspired Amot for the storyboard of the brand that carries the spirit of ‘casual with an edge’, and the way Amot translates it into a collection, season in season out, bodes well with Andrea’s taste. But the label itself was born way before Andrea met Amot.
Isis: The Beginning
The name Isis came from the name of a goddess in Greek ancient mythology.

It all started in 2010 when Andrea collaborated with her friends to make a clothing line as a hobby. It was originally created because she wanted to make ‘easy-going luxury’ accessible for everyone. The brand started by making a series of t-shirts. Because of creative differences, the partnership dissolved, but Andrea still had strong belief in Isis. It’s in Amot, residing in Singapore at the time, that Andrea found a perfect partner in building this brand. Amot, a La Salle Singapore graduate of fashion design, grew up in Singapore and had the luxury to not be overwhelmed by Andrea. Thus, allowing him to give Andrea his most objective input in this partnership
which requires s e r i o u s debate. I guess, if it were any other person, they wouldn’t have the courage to do so. This is what makes the partnership work so well, because the two have an equal footing in the creative direction of the brand. Also, even though they are two different minds with the same vision and goal, one view completes the other. Amot said that Andrea “Enjoys [fashion] without knowing that she understands it.” And the melding of enjoyment and creativity give a strong DNA to ISIS’ designs.
The Process of Creating a Collection
Andrea and Amot begin their seasonal collection by creating a storyboard. Andrea and Amot will brainstorm on story lines, putting together images that can inspire them, selecting colour palettes and the fabrics. Amot will then translate this storyboard by creating a series of designs where the two of them will brainstorm some more. During the brainstorming and selection process it’s Andrea who balances Amot’s creative mind by giving her input on the
Department Store in Singapore. JFW was also a big stepping stone for them, since it was the first time for the label to display a complete collection.
The DNA of Isis
It’s really nice to see how Andrea could talk so humbly about the brand when I know that she could pull the forces to make it bigger. But she wants to take it slow; she wants it to be wellprepared before she goes too far. If anything, Andrea said, the whole experience has given her the confidence about the existence of Isis and thus gives her direction in mapping their plan for the future.
Isis is not about following the latest trends. The words ‘casual’, ‘street’ and ‘urban’ are in the DNA of Isis. They want to create something that people would wear, without having the hassle of trying to make the pieces work together. Amot said “We want to put something into the pieces which creates an edge, thus differentiating Isis’ pieces from the rest.” If you ask them about Isis signature pieces, it has got to be the hoody and blazer. The hoody adds that urban and casual trait, the blazer reinforces its position in representing powerful women. Most importantly, both are equally wearable. You will also see a lot of fabric not too common anywhere else, as Isis uses a lot of fabric manipulation techniques, such as dying, print, texture manipulation, etc.

production side. The most important insight is, of course, because Andrea as a woman herself and has an idea on what would work and how comfortable it would be.
In the future, Isis’ plan is to build a balance between their presence in Indonesia and offshore. They’re searching for stockists that they think will suit them. And lastly, maintaining that reasonable pricing so that their fashion is accessible for all.
Isis: The Present and the Future
Since Blueprint (Singapore, 2011) and Jakarta Fashion Week 2012 (JFW), the brand has been going strong. It has gained more recognition than they’ve expected. It’s so overwhelming for them that they decided to take a step back and contemplate what they really wanted at that time.
It’s definitely not an easy decision, but they wanted to see Isis in the market for a long time, build a strong production line and have a market share first before making that decision. At last year’s JFW, Andrea finally gave the green signal to go ahead with their pending plan. They confirmed that they would be stocking Isis collections at Takashimaya

When they joined the trade show in Singapore, Blueprint, their label was not even two years old yet. But the Singapore market was already requesting them to supply to some department stores. Andrea said that she wanted to be sure that they were ready first before they took this giant leap. That is why they finally postponed (not rejected) the offer at that time. They were at the phase of learning about their market. They were also not at the stage to mass produce. All of their designs and productions are done under one roof. With the boutique on the first floor, office and design workshop on the second floor and production done at the third floor.

n event based around a very versatile material, Plastic Culture grabbed the Jakarta art scene’s imagination and delivered a successful event titled ‘Toy Life’, a photographic exhibition held between May 19 to 27. The idea here was to bring your toys to life through photographic expressions and what a brilliant idea this turned out to be as a large number of toy and photography enthusiast turned up and brought all the right vibes and energy into the event. Safe to say that the Grand Indonesia shopping mall was filled with camera flashes all day. As for the toys, it seemed like they thoroughly enjoyed being in the limelight. The people behind Plastic Culture also ensured that this was not just another common photography event. They took the education route when they invited senior photographer Fauzi Helmy to come and give a photography workshop to further the knowledge and skills of participants. If that wasn’t generous enough, they had a closing party with DJs that ended this whole event perfectly on a high. We’re really excited for what Plastic culture has planned for Jakarta next time.

As you’d expect from a Cuban bar, there is a special cigar menu, with all your favourite varieties like Cohibas, Monte Christos and Romeo Y Juliettas to puff away on. Star attraction at Cubana though has to be the amazing cocktail menu, which is laid out like a period newspaper entitled ‘cocktail hour’. Numerous rum based cocktails, including the Cuba Libre, the Hemingway Daiquiri, El Presidente and the Mary Pickford cover the classics, while a cutting edge selection of molecular cocktails ensure the menu is kept right up to date. Check out the jars of planter’s punch, sangria and Cubana punch to share out amongst friends. For my first foray into the Cubana realm, I check out a plate of the Crunchy Croquetas (39k++) and Traditional Empanadas (55k++) – traditional Latin-American pastries filled with pulled pork and melted mozzarella – a superb starter.A root vegetable salad (40k++) goes down perfectly with a Big Mama Mojito (100k++) that features no less than three shots of Bacardi. Moving on to the main, the Australian Filet Steak (149k++) from the specials menu fits bill nicely – the spicy tomato salsa topping and Manchego cheese a particular highlight. Fancying something sweet to round things off it’s a portion of the insanely addictive Trés Leches (35k++) – soft sponge cakes soaked in milk cream, condensed milk and Grand Marnier and topped with vanilla whipped cream. Open from 11am ‘til late for lunch and dinner, Cubana hosts a daily happy hour from 4-7pm where its 2F1 on Cubana cocktails. During the week, make sure you check out two for one Mojito Mondays, or shake your hips to Charanga Band on Tuesdays with a free salsa class. tand up comedy is booming nowadays in Indonesia. One such event was held at Klapa which presented four professional comedians: Ramon Papana, Pandji Pragiwaksono, Ryan Adriyani, and Reggy Hasibuan. Besides the unique insightful speech mixed with comedy, the event was actually an acronym for Legend, Outstander, Legbreaker (LOL). A book by Ramon Papana titled Kitab Suci, a free book about the basics of stand up comedy, was handed out to the guests. Overall, the event was simple but hilarious.

The audience was carried away when a group of Japanese musicians jammed with local jazz artists. All in all, the show was congenial and entertaining as always without straying away from the core of a good jazz performance.
