It’s a crying shame the Java Rockin’land had to be cancelled next month. Hot on the heels of the Lady Gaga debacle last month, this cancellation doesn’t really bode well for the future of big events in town or maybe it’s just another sign of there being too many festivals lately in the capital and the whole thing is possibly becoming overkill. How much money can the big sponsors continue to throw at these events, it’s hard to say, but we would imagine that the organizers will get back on their horses as soon as possible and present another big show in a flash. Let’s not forget how many successful shows these particular producers have put on like the Java Jazz, the Java Soulnation shows and of course the three previous Rockin’land outings. We hope they can get it up again in the near future. Meanwhile this week, we have the DJ Festival 2012 at Ancol Beach with a number of big name DJs entertaining the masses and for those who like a bit of local rock n’ roll, the Jakarta Fair has a slew of big top-named Indonesian bands playing just about every night of the week. As we head towards Ramadhan there will surely be a load of entertainment coming our way before it’s time to rest again. Just keep tuned here with the beat magazine to get your fix of the good times that Jakarta has to offer. We had the sad news of Ivan Sumarauw (Conge) passing away last week in Jakarta. He was a focal point of the Bali night life for many years before he moved to Jakarta’s Buddha Bar and Negev recently. He was one of the most photographed people in the first years of the beat magazine and wound up on the cover of the sixth edition in Bali. He will be well remembered for his party organizing, hosting and fashion shows in the heyday years of Double Six Club and beyond and he will surely be missed by many. Condolences to his family and friends from all of us at the beat magazine. Rest in peace.

The biggest rock music festival in South East Asia had been called off by the organizers due to scheduling issue with its international performers. Java rockin’ land 2012 was originally slated for July 6-8 at Pantai Karnaval Ancol featuring the likes of Moth, Spiritualized, System of Venus, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Standards, Yuck, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, to name a few. Unfortunately the designated dates clash with some of the headliners’ prior commitments to other events, hence preventing them from making appearance on Java rockin’ land 2012 as planned. The Java Festival Production who have successfully staged the annual festival three times in a row had to cancel this year’s event rather than to continue without its top billings and disappoint the sponsors, festival goers, and other participants. The organizers ensures that all purchased tickets will be refunded in full and the festival will return next year with the same high quality entertainment. For more info on ticket refund go to: www.javarockingland.com/2012

Tamara Hunkeler or Dinka can be considered one of the queens of progressive house music. The name Dinka was taken from a tribe’s name in Southern Sudan because of Tamara’s love of other culture. What makes her so special is that every melody in her music is like a message and every set takes you on a musical journey. Her albums have also had success on dance floors around the globe and include Temptation which was released in 2008, Hotel Summerville in 2010, and also Tales of the Sun. Tamara is no stranger to Indonesia and has already once performed in the city of Jakarta.

he government of Jakarta had regrettably failed to back numerous DJ-themed programs for a while. Therefore to answer calls for more support on DJ related events the government plans to organize DJ Festival 2012 on June 30 in Pantai Festival, Ancol, Jakarta. The event, which is scheduled to roll out in the morning, will feature more than just DJ performances. To add to the revelry there will also be dance and DJ competitions, involving a large number of participants until early in the evening, an automotive exhibition, mini expo, as well as a food and fashion bazaar. To top it all off, a rave party will be staged to end the night’s celebration. Scores of internationally acclaimed DJs will be ready to rock Pantai Festival, Ancol. DJ Jerome

Isma-Ae who has performed in Jakarta on a few occasions will be on hand to play his progressive music set to his fans along with the queen of progressive music herself, Dinka. Meanwhile, some big time local performers, like the much anticipate collaboration of DJ Naro and Balawan, will also be on the bill. The festival, hosted by MC Joey and Vibe, will also feature unique video mapping by VJ Grooveland as well as DJ Remy Irwan, DJ Ocho, Jacqueline and Aiu Kandi, Deefo and also a group of DJs from Rumus. Jakarta: the land of (unique) opportunity

If you're in a car and about to hit Jakarta's main roads on the likes of Jalan Sudirman or Jalan MH Thamrin on a weekday from 7am to 10am and 4.30pm till 7pm, you’re bound to be offered the services of a "3-in-1 jockey" - people who make a living out of getting into cars that are passing certain areas in town that require three or more people in a single vehicle. This sight is indeed uniquely Jakarta, and it's no surprise that this is just the tip of the iceberg of many other random services that can be found in the city. Here we sniff some of them out, and trust me, you're bound to use one of these unique services some day. [Darren Dylan]

Welcome fellow adventurers, welcome to Jakarta By Night! Let me, your host (hands off the suit), take you on a tour of this wonderous place. This is a dark city that exists, depending on who you ask, by divine provenance or as affront to nature. Are you ready? Then let’s begin. And don’t take that taxi it isn’t blue!

We begin with Puro, with the best Japanese-byway-of-California food I have experienced outside (and possibly in) Japan. Enjoying it? Good, please don’t choke when you see the bill. The adjacent Blowfish is an homage to oriental influenced decadence. Watch with me as the clock strikes midnight. See what has happened my fellow adventurers! See the swinging tornado of beautiful girls, tasting the sweet freedom of their early 20s. See their boys… er, men! Endless flowing wallets but below average tolerance for alcohol. You woken up yet? Oh good, please don’t look down. You are now at Skye Bar, on the 57th floor of BCA tower, a place that is so cohesively industrial in style, it looks as if it has been cast out of iron and wine. Look at that view, isn’t it amazing how the city lights break through the haze of a Jakarta night. Oh wait, what’s this? Let us follow these beautiful ladies, fellow adventurers, as they clack to the

turbo elevators in their Louboutin heels, pursue them as they step into their chauffeured mobiles and make their way to Dragonfly. Ah Dragonfly. The zenith. The apex. The holy grail. Where people go to see and be seen, the most select and beautiful of Jakarta society mingles with the rich, men who strap Audemars Piguet to their wrists and yawn at the thousand or so US Dollars it costs for a table. See how light oak accents mix with avant garde design, providing a soft woody palette for Jakarta’s high society to play. And, oh my. Look at them. How they do play. But what’s this? The clock strikes 3am and it is time to leave. Where can we go? Ah, but Jakarta holds more, much more. In this town, what counts is what lies beneath. My friends, we have barely scratched the surface! Prepare yourself. started. Skye

Indecision is not helping the wave of uncertainty currently sweeping the world

Given the depth of the economic problems that engulf the nation, will there really be that much difference in the policies they would realistically be able to implement if elected, despite their widely divergent campaign platforms?

The Greek electorate voted by a very narrow margin to support pro-bailout parties. Uncertainty still exists, though, over whether they can deliver the harsh austerity measures demanded by the EU (principally Germany) or whether the embattled nation will still leave the eurozone anyway, as many have predicted.

Closer to home, the presidency of Indonesia will be up for grabs in 2014. Apart from current uncertainty over who will be selected as presidential candidates by the political parties allowed to participate, will their campaign platforms be that different given the myriad problems confronting the nation – desperately inadequate infrastucture, widespread corruption and the growing gap between rich and poor?

If anything encapsulates the tensions within the eurozone it must surely be the Euro 2012 quarter-final, ironically between Germany and Greece, which had still to be played at the time of writing. Given the way things have been going politically, it would not be surprising if it ended up as a draw or even victory for Greece. The recent election in Egypt produced a knifeedge result and a standoff between the military and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. After all the activism of the Arab Spring, the nation seems almost to be back to square one. The UK’s Guardian newspaper has summed it all up very succinctly: “Egypt’s post-Mubarak politics are often compared to a ride on a rollercoaster, but the more accurate metaphor for now is that they have entered a maze where the generals control all the exits.” In the US, the political system works in such a way that the upcoming presidential election will be decided by around 10 “battleground” states where support has swung between both Democrats and Republicans in recent elections. Support for the Democrat incumbent Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney is currently running neck and neck in these states.

In July, we will see a mini-version of this contest played out in the election for the next governor and vice-governor of Jakarta. The pairs of candidates will present carefully thought-out campaign promises but ultimately, the sheer number and intensity of the capital’s problems means that achieving real change is a bit like trying to steer a supertanker: it cannot change direction either fast or accurately. Most recently, we witnessed the damage that indecision can do in the debacle over whether Lady Gaga would be allowed to perform here. The National Police said it was up to them, only to be promptly contradicted by the Jakarta Police who claimed it was their decision as the venue lay within their jurisdiction. When it became clear that cancellation of the concert would cause an uproar, the police tried to back off, saying that other regulatory bodies had to issue their own permits before they could decide ultimately whether or not to give the event a green light. In the end, Gaga management unilaterally cancelled the event anyway, as it was concerned about the possibility of violence occurring on the night. Now that’s what I call a decisive decision. The toe cap can be on the tip of flats or heels, but the super popular one remains the toe cap pumps. This retroinspired style is fun and gives a pop of color to the outfit. The “cap is usually in a color that contrasts with the rest of the shoe. Metallic hues, like gold, silver and pewter, are super hot and adds the bling factor, looking extra glamorous.

By AmaliaHayati Ladies, what’s your answer to the question in the title? It’s not a posh garden party, just the normal and casual Sunday afternoon BBQ party with your best friends. What do you usually wear for this occasion? One of the golden rules that I hold is to keep it simple! It will keep you alive, no matter what the terrain of the garden party might look like. Here are some other tips.

Wear a cotton dress

www.beatmag.com

A t-shirt or cotton dress looks casual and you’ll definitely won’t look overdressed in this. It’s also going to be very comfortable to wear for an outdoor occasion, even when very little outdoor activity is involved. More importantly, the material is very light, perfect for the weather. As an alternative, capri pants, or shorts with a t-shirt, could be preferable as well.

No heels!

s t y l e

037

If you want to avoid disaster, you must avoid pointy heels at all cost! I prefer to wear sandals or platform (a wedge with a flat surface).

Accessorize But not too much, because you don’t want your accessories to be too busy and hinder your movement among the other guests. Choose something that is chunky, statement-making, yet doesn’t fall too far from your neck. Like these two.

If it happens to be a mid-day or afternoon garden party, this is an absolute must. Because you don’t want to keep squinting while you’re talking with your friends. I like the wayfarer shape because it matches the casualness of the cotton dress and it’s fitting to the whole occasion. But take them off while talking to people. It’s kinda rude not to. How’s that for style? look great at your next beat bbq iya!

Die Stube

www.beatmag.com

A true German heart restaurant in the sehr of Jakarta? Das ist gut!

Die Stube Plaza Bisnis Kemang I, Ground floor, Jl. Kemang Raya No. 2, Jakarta Ph: (021) 7179 3486, 718 1080 Opens: Weekdays: 7.30 am – 1 am Weekends: 10 am – 2 am Website: www.diestube.com

ie Stube is loosely translated as a cozy room or lounge. It is the labor of love for Mr. Patrick Widjaja, an Indonesian who was born and raised in Germany. He wanted to bring the traditional German experience to Jakarta, so he established Die Stube in Kemang as a small bar back in 2004, serving German beer and pub food. Over the years, it grew into a full-on restaurant; a testimony of the place’s popularity with Jakarta’s public.

There are some sides that you can choose to go with your platter: sauerkraut or fermented cabbage, baked beans, pan roasted potatoes, and butter spinach. We opted for the two latter ones, and they were really delightful. Directly imported from Germany, the spinach is especially wonderful.

We also ordered the Entrecote Beurre de Commune. Served on a mini hot plate, the Australian Mullawara Angus beef on this dish was so tender, it just melts in your mouth! The wonderful sauce topping on the meat was first popularized in the 1940s by Café de Paris restaurant in Geneva. Just sublime! This dish is available with 180 grams (200k), and 350 grams (380k) of beef.

Tucked away above a stylish furniture store with the same name, Commune is barely a month old. It has a reminiscent of a cool café in Melbourne or Sydney. The wooden floor juxtaposes nicely with the black and white tiles, while the furniture (courtesy of the store downstairs) has a contemporary chic that makes for a very warm and cozy ambiance. The lighting is also a good mix of styles with a modern touch. The vibe here is electric and chilled at the same time, earning them positive points right off the bat. Another thing, an original painting by European artist Le Mayeur adorns the private room, adding a nice vibrant color to the place.

Now the Commune Fried Rice (65k) is another nice surprise. The curried fried rice is very flavorsome, served with traditional Balinese style sate lilit. This traditional favorite just went up a notch!

The made-from-scratch menu is a mélange of French, Italian, and Australian cuisine. But some Indonesian dishes are not forgotten. We began with the Caesar Salad (55k); it’s a seemingly familiar dish, but kudos for the homemade Caesar dressing and croutons! The dishes here are not too big, which makes them perfect for tasting. The Spaghetti Pomodoro (65k) was up next; light, tomatobased pasta with basil, nicely accented with juicy meatballs.

As for the dessert, the cakes at Commune are homemade with natural, and as organic as possible, ingredients. The Hummingbird (38k) is their signature, made with banana, pineapple, pecans, among others. And blue organic food coloring is added for color. The Irish Cake (38k) is another noteworthy one here. This one is accented with Guinness stout and Bailey’s Irish cream cheese is also included in the making of this wonderful creation. And of course, the Red Velvet (45k) is always a crowd pleaser! And they are proud to point out that the red color on the cake is made with beetroot. All natural, and we love it! We had a great experience at Commune. It was time to go back to our respective offices, but another visit is already in the cards for us. Maybe we’ll stop by on a Friday night, when an acoustic band plays. All in all, Commune is a solid addition to Jakarta’s restaurant scene. (Budi Iskandar)

Celeb Chosen Nine

LUCY WIRYONO New Kids On The Block! Post concert syndrome. Oh well, considering I’ve waited 20 years to see them… I’ve spent my life listening to their albums over and over again haha.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Guns n Roses’ Appetite for Destruction. My mother is a devoted Catholic, the cover of the album made her eyes pop! The cross and the skulls… It was actually too much for her. But, pretty amazingly, she ended up being cool with it (or was she just acting? Hehe, who knows).

The Sound of Movies By Erza S.T.

W

www.beatmag.com

ithout a doubt, classical music plays an important role in creating a nuance in a movie. Over the decades, movies have been full with great soundtracks that are memorable even today. A couple of bars of strong bass from a John William’s compositions for example, will immediately bring you to the epic story of Star Wars. Or what about the famous opening music soundtrack from Stanley Kubric’s 2001: A Space Odyssey which is actually a composition by Richard Strauss called “Also Sprach Zarathustra”. These solidly prove that the sound of a movie is as important as the movie itself. At the beginning, film music got off to a rocky start in the ‘silent’ days with all sounds played live. Luckily, after the invention of talking movies, music also got to play a more significant role. The event that changed the world musically, cinematically speaking was the screening of King Kong in 1933. In the finale when the gigantic ape emerged from the rubble and ashes there was a landmark symphonic score by Max Steiner. Since that time, the growth of the musical score in movies has been developing progressively. Imagine if classic epics such as The Ten Commandments or Ben Hur had no music background at all… I believe the drama wouldn’t be the same. Aula Simfonia Jakarta is trying to showcase some of the most memorable tunes from popular movies in their upcoming concert called “A Night of Colorful Symphonies”. They refused to tell us specifically about which

movie soundtracks will be on the program for this concert, however they did share some hints and I quote: “… one of them involves a certain British intelligence agent, another one is from a movie based on a theme park ride… and a couple more that you surely, don’t want to miss…” To summarize this quote, I personally assume that they will perform James Bond’s theme followed by either a soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean or Transformers; but hey… this is just me guessing.

and many more. They also hold the distinction of being the first choir in the world to win the European Grand Prix of Choral Singing twice: in 1997 and 2007.

Since this concert is still part of Aula Simfonia Jakarta’s regular programs, it is safe to assume that some ‘heavenly music’ will be performed in this concert as well. Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Saint Saens’s Symphony No.3 with organ are the other selections in the program as well as Mussorgsky’s Night on a Bald Mountain.

Make sure that you don’t miss any of these great performances!

The choir is one of the Asia’s most awarded, having consistently won all the top prizes in most of the world’s best prestigious choral competitions such as Arezzo and Gorizia in Italy, Marktoberdorf in Germany, Spittal in Austria

Be Brave

By: @JohanJT

Some people say that being brave is a state of mind, and some say it’s a trait. Well, obviously being brave is followed by action, like this princess who finds her own adventure in finding bravery for herself, a teenage superhero who accepts his destiny to fight evil, and a dancer who improves and challenges himself after a defeat. Be brave too and check out www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

Brave Action, Adventure, Comedy. Directors: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman. Writers: Steven Purcell, Irene Mecchi. Cast: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters. This obvious animated Oscar-contender comes from both Pixar and Disney. Brave tells a story of a impetuous princess Merida, a skillful archer, who is seeking the true meaning of bravery in carving her own path in life. The story is original, it’s also so universal that both kids and adults can enjoy it. What’s stunning about this film? See how detailed and smooth the animation of of Merida’s curly red hair. Put on the 3D glasses and you’ll have a feast for your eyes!

The Amazing Spider-Man Action, Adventure, Fantasy. Director: Marc Webb. Writers: James Vanderbilt, Steve Kloves, Alvin Sargent. Cast: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary.

“The untold story of Spiderman” is the tagline, and well, the Amazing Spider-Man comes from another Marvel storyteller who reshaped Peter Parker’s identity with a darker background and a rebellious teenage character. The choice of putting both Andrew Garfield as the male lead and Emma Stone as his girl is definitely a good marketing strategy to attract both genders. In this version, it shows you more vigilante action, more amazing cinematography and greater romance to complement the thrills.

StreetDance 2 Drama, Music, Romance. Director: Max Giwa, Dania Pasquini. Writer: Jane English. Cast: Tom Conti, George Sampson, Sofia Boutella. Up” ataupun “Stomp The Yard”. When Ash, atop street dancer in London, got humiliated by an American Crew called Invicible, he sets off to gather the best dancers from around the world to face them in the next competition. In his journey, destiny brings him a meeting with a beautiful sexy salsa dancer, Eva, who eventually gives him passion and magic into his new dance style. Nothing much to expect from a dance genre movie, just enjoy the music, the good looking faces, bodies and groovy moves. Shake your hips and popcorn bucket!

ZEN FAMILY SPA & REFLEXOLOGY

By AffiAssegaf

Where: Jalan Gunawarman No. 43, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta Selatan. Phone: (021) 726.2375 Who is it for: It’s a family spa, so mom, dad and the kids can enjoy the various treatments provided by their therapists. The treatments: Ranging from foot treatment, Balinese massage, royal touch (a two hour massage using yoga-inspired techniques, aimed to help you relax and reduce tensions from stress), face massage, lulur, boreh and many more. How much: Very affordable. The treatment starts from 50k (face massage) to 249k (the aforementioned Royal Touch) Our review: “Spa can be everywhere but the best spa comes from the best therapist” is Zen Family Spa motto and after trying it for myself a few weeks ago, I had to agree. The offer to come to Zen and try their treatment couldn’t have come at a better time. I was facing two big moves, to a new home and a new office, and was in a quite stressful period in my life. I desperately needed a few hours of being “zoned out”, not thinking of work, home, or other problems and just relax while being pampered from head to toe, and I believe I came to the right place. The spacious, dimly-lit interior of the Zen Family Spa building, strategically located in the heart of Jakarta, quickly made me feel at home. The rooms, all scented in relaxing and soothing mint aromatherapy, are decorated

in traditional Balinese style with a slight modern touch. They are also very clean and well kept. The staff are warm, friendly but were very professional throughout my visit. I chose a 90 minute Balinese massage and was taken to a private room which was small but cozy, dominated by natural elements like wood and stone. The therapist started the treatment by washing my feet in a small basin containing warm water and flower petals. She then asked me to lay down on the bed, lit up the aromatherapy burner and proceeded with the massage, beginning with my feet. The therapist was very, very skillful. She expertly kneaded my sore muscles, giving them just the right pressure to release all the tension I had in me and made me feel very relaxed. So relaxed that I fell asleep almost immediately . Ninety minutes flew by under these skillful hands and before I knew it (I hadn’t even gotten to a point where I dreamed of becoming Benedict Cumberbach’s love interest, damn!), my session was over. It seems like all rooms in Zen Family Spa are equipped with a large, limestone bathtub and what is a better way of closing a fantastic massage session than soaking in warm, bubbly water while sipping ginger tea? Nothing! So that’s exactly what I did and I could really feel all my stress just melt away. It was divine. I walked out of the place feeling immensely better both physically and emotionally and I was just feeling..zen! I highly recommend it and I would come back to Zen Family Spa anytime!

somber audio and visual feast. “Aftermath” is a collection of images taken during Indonesia’s moments of despair. It chronicles tsunami-struck Aceh all the way to the explosion of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta, visitors are transported back into a slur of emotions that the nation shared together in those trying times. Vivid images speak of despair and fragility but also about finding hope and comfort in the midst and after those horrifying moments passed.

www.beatmag.com

This was a collection put together by many photo journalists around Indonesia and it was an event cleverly curated by Kemal Jufri, who spoke of how the images really did speak more than mere words. He described it to be breathtaking, heartbreaking and yet strengthening at the same time explaining that the nation has been made strong despite these catastrophic events. Held at the famed Salihara over the past six weeks, “Aftermath” raised funds through the selling of these images for disaster struck areas of Indonesia and also encouraged more photo journalist to send in their images to show us all who survived it’s aftermath.

The interesting bit about Woosah is that the city quite literally is the gallery. Everywhere from north to south, walls were decorated with inspiring textual and vivid images that voiced

out a lot of today’s issues and current affairs. Another brilliant thing about this whole project is that, when closely looked into, it did bring a much needed facelift and color to the cities old walls and has most definitely inspired a whole new set of young up and coming artists to get out there, break a few rules and get creative. Woosah also reached out to junior high schools by inviting them and teaching the young minds how to paint on clothes and also had seminars on creative drawing and other art related modules. The DJs, live band performances and all that therapeutic art definitely brought a “Woosah” moment to the old capital doldrums.

brainchild of Jakarta’s notorious street art movement “Woosah” brought together seven of the capitals most well known urban artist to participate and inject some fresh inspiration for the Jakarta’s empty walls and budding street artists. The event also brought art indoors with creative discussion forums discussing individual expression, use of public space and various other fresh and artsy topics.

The Ting Tings Sounds From Nowheresville

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

We Started Nothing” proclaimed UK dance pop duo Jules de Martino and Katie White back in 2008 with the title of their debut album, and while it did throw up a couple of pretty catchy singles, it only takes a short trawl though their patchy latest effort Sounds From Nowhere to observe that that title has become uncomfortably ironic. Despite a relatively brisk 10 tracks (none of which are over four minutes), it doesn’t take long before everything feels awfully bogged down and samey, the early upbeat promise soon giving way to repetitive shouty cheerleader style rapping and plagiarized guitars. If you really fancy drawing out proceedings even further there’s the bloated deluxe edition album with a full 19 tracks for those who have plenty of disposable time on their hands. The track listing has the air of having been created using those jig-word fridge magnets - “Hang it Up”, “One by One”, “Give it Back” – the sort of thing that was de riguer in the mid 90’s when Irish disco funksters Moloko had their moment in the sun. Oddly reminiscent of a Rage Against the Machine rant, the bouncy quiet/loud “Guggenheim” starts off well enough but the sound of White trying to do a Zach de la Rocha on the chorus is simply nauseating. “This time I’m gonna get it right” she screeches, perhaps in reference to the fact that halfway through recording SFN the duo ditched half of their new material and started again, much to the record company’s disdain. Meanwhile the repetitive refrain of “Day to Day” sounds like a Spice Girls B-side at best, joining the majority of tracks from the album that vanish from memory as soon as they’ve left the speakers. But isn’t dancy/poppy music meant to be a bit kitsch? A bit throwaway? A bit of dancefloor fodder to get the party started of an evening? Well, yes absolutely, but SFN makes me want to go and jump around in about the same sort of way that watching Jaws makes me want to go and swim in the sea. Sadly there’s little to take away from this album – let’s hope they make it back from Nowheresville soon.

adia Ali came to Jakarta last week and didn’t really live up to the hype. She had a major hit a number of years ago in Rapture but maybe that should have stayed in the archives. The opening DJ was really quite good and then the next guy came up and played a whole lot of mash up stuff that left us scratching our heads. By the time Nadia hit the stage it was pure pop disco time that was fun but yeah, next please. Immigrant was packed to the rafters and while the show maybe wasn’t the greatest we definitely had a smashing time.

To celebrate its 41st anniversary, Hard Rock Café Jakarta took the theme “Back in the 70’s – Tribute to the Beatles”, the event presented an authentic Beatles look-a-like local band called G-Pluck and they brought back some nostalgia with Beatles’ songs. There were also some memorabilia set in the café, such as dolls and The Beatles’ very own guitars. There was also a charity session where the money collected will be donated to Yayasan pita Kuning and a dinner with HIV/AIDS volunteers.

Summer has begun, and LUV’s Bar & Dine was there to celebrate it. Splash was the pre-event before the main event that will be held in Bali next month, and that’s the reason why the splash today was beach themed. The shoreline decoration, like surf boards and dingies were also combined with the Euro Cup elements. Beach wear was worn by the employees, the models from LV C&C, and also guests. The resident DJ played music while the match between France vs. Ukraine broadcasted live. Next, DJ Alannys took over the deck and played dance music till late in the morning.

This is the adjustable magnifying light that provides distortion-free, illuminated magnification from any angle. Unlike lesser spherical lenses that distort images and cause eyestrain, this superior magnifier’s aspheric lens prevents spherical aberration that distorts images, resulting in optimal clarity from edge to edge of the lens regardless of its position. The rectangular lens has a 4 1/2” x 6” viewing area and provides 2X magnification for reading small text or inspecting fine details of collectibles or crafts. Twelve LEDs line the underside of the lens and cast bright white light without the glare common to fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. Three levels of light output provide customizable illumination and the device’s dual flexible goosenecks allow the lens to be raised, lowered, or positioned at any angle. With a scratch-resistant lens coating and a 6 3/4” diameter base that allows unobtrusive set up on a desk or table. www.hammacher.com $199.95

Plans underway for new highway The Ministry of Public Works is currently looking into plans to construct a new highway linking Gilimanuk in Bali’s far west with capital city Denpasar. It is hoped that the motorway toll road will speed up access from Denpasar to the west and on into Java. “Construction of the highway linking Gilimanuk and Denpasar is still undergoing the study and planning process. Its construction will be done gradually,” stated Deputy Minister of Public Works, Dr. Ahmad Hermanto Dardak in Sanur yesterday. According to Hermanto, the construction of a faster route linking Gilimanuk and Denpasar is in order to modernize the road network infrastructure in Bali. “With this highway, the travel time between Gilimanuk, Denpasar, and Padangbai will be shorter,” he added. In addition to the new highway construction Gilimanuk-Denpasar, the Ministry of Public Works continues to upgrade the road networks around Denpasar and Badung. “We want the city to reflect a proper metropolitan area. With the improvement of road infrastructure, we expect to be able to make Bali increasingly attractive in the future,” added Hermanto. [From the TBD]

Bossa Nova

Brazilian Grill

Bossa Nova Brazilian Grill Canggu Plaza, Jl. Taman Wisata Tibubeneng No.XX Ph. +62 361 864 4700 www.bossanovaasia.com

Ok

that might not be strictly true, actually it roughly translates to ‘traditional Brazilian steak house’, which, as you can probably imagine is a place patronized almost exclusively by those of the carnivorous persuasion. According to the team behind Bossa Nova, the churrascaria is a common sight across South America, providing a place for people to meet up and socialize over lively banter, cool Latino music, good wine and of course a wedge or four of the finest meat possible. Various cuts of beef, chicken and pork are skewered and grilled to perfection, but these aren’t just any old bits of meat… These cuts are unique Brazilian style, specially imported from South America and grilled to perfection for the ultimate in carvery joy.

If you’ve ever fantasized of succulent meats being constantly brought to your table for as long as your heart desires, dream no more, because Bossa Nova is a churrascaria, and ‘churrascaria’ means ‘massive meat festival’ in this part of the word.

The real beauty of Bossa Nova is the format of how the food is served. There is no menu per se, rather an all-you-can-eat concept whereby for a paltry 130k you can fill up on as much food as you can stuff in your gob, from bacon wrapped chicken, gourmet sausages, rump steaks, strip loin caps, lamb, to an extensive salad bar (come back veggies all is not lost!). Don’t forget to bring the nippers along too, with kids between 5-11 years old eating for 65k, and toddlers under 5 eating for free. There’s even a selection of lipsmacking desserts included in that price such as chocolate mousse, panna cotta or Spanish menjar blanco (almond cream).

Grab a table in the classy, homey style interior and enjoy a relaxed Canggu atmosphere for both lunch and dinner. An extensive beverage list features an ample amount of top-notch cocktails and refreshing drinks if that’s your cup of tea, but let’s be honest, good meat demands good wine. Happily enough a rather swanky looking walk-in wine cellar sits just next to the kitchen, fully stocked with plenty of vino from all over the world to compliment the carne. Even better news is that most of it is available by the glass, meaning if you’re only after a snifter of red there’s no need to shell out for a whole bottle. (85k/glass for the Undurraga Pinot Noir).

Along with Bossa Nova, the spanking new Canggu Plaza boasts a Trattoria restaurant as well as Suksema Sushi Bar to satisfy your appetite. Wednesday is Jazz night down at the plaza, so bring your mates and soak up the smooth sounds of Lisa Soul and her band between 7-10pm, all the while filling up on the best of Brazilian traditional cuisine. Dan Ashcroft

www.beatmag.com

In true churrascaria style, diners are presented first with a small painted wooden top, half green half red. When you’re full up, flip it over so red is on top. Hungry for more? Go green and the staff will keep coming over to dole out more meaty goodness direct to your plate. This in itself is quite a spectacle, each massive skewer thinly sliced with a huge knife tableside, which you then pick off with the provided tongs. Anywhere else and you’d think twice about getting too close to a man brandishing a sword and half a cow on a skewer.
