Next stop Ramadhan. Things will be winding down over the next week or so as Muslim people around the world and right here in Jakarta begin to look forward to the month-long fasting period before Idul Fitri heralds in another new Islamic year. During Ramadhan most bars and clubs will be closed unless they are in large hotels and dining outlets will be open in shopping malls. If you think about it, there are a few of them around. So all is not lost for the non-practising folk around town, but don’t expect it to be pumping too much. It’s a good time to enjoy the peace in any case. Before Ramadhan begins, we have a little bit more entertainment on offer to enjoy. The Jakarta Fair is still supplying lots of local recording artists and bands to entertain the masses just about every night till Sunday July 15. That is well worth a look for some local flavours and sounds. Watch out for the RnB Summer Parade Summer Break at Atlantis Water Adventure – Ancol Jakarta on Saturday July 14 with RnB artists from all over the region. Also on the same night you could try the Cornetto Summer Ice Cream Festival at Stadion Renang Senayan which consists of international and national live bands and DJs. Sebastian Krieg and Daniel Portman will be taking over the decks at Illigals also on the same night, which shouldn’t be missed by any electronic music loving punter out there. You can see all the events that are happening over the next two weeks in the What’s On and HereNow sections inside. Have fun while you can and we’ll see you next week when we are in the heart of Ramadhan and the fasting month.

Family Day Out Central Park is one of the right places to spend a holiday in Jakarta. With the theme of ‘Summer Festival’ and to celebrate the school holidays, they are holding an event called ‘Family Day Out’ until July 15. Still celebrating the Jakarta Great Sale, Central Park also presents the ‘Summer Sale’ up to July 15. And one of the most awaited entertainments is the ‘Koreanholic Festival’ which will feature the sensational Indonesian boyband, Smash on July 15 at 7pm at Tribeca Park. It’s time to bring out your kids and enjoy the entertainment.
Gym Class Heroes Gym Class Heroes is the name of a well-respected US rap/rock group. They were formed in 1997, when Travie McCoy met the drummer Mat McGinley in the gym class at their school. This group which plays hip hop, rock, funk, and reggae has released five studio albums since 2001. Now the Gym Class Heroes consists of Travie McCoy (vocal), Disashi Lumumba (guitar), Eric Robert (bass), and Matt McGinley (drum, percussion). The group which once received an MTV Video Music Award as the Best New Artist will perform in Jakarta, at Kartika Expo, Balai Kartini on Saturday August 11. maroon 5 Last year, the American band, Maroon Five successfully rocked their fans in Jakarta. After releasing their new album, Overexposed with the single “Payphone” in June, the band will reappear in Indonesia again this October. It seems like Maroon Five who are probably most popular with their phenomenal song “Move like Jagger” had such a great time here in Indonesia that they have decided to add an extra show to their tour here in the capital. The band which consists of Adam Levine (lead vocal, rhythm guitar) who is also a judge in the American talent show, The Voice, PJ Morton (keyboard, backing vocal), Mickey Madden (bass), James Valentine (guitar, backing vocal), and Matt Flynn (drum, percussion) have won numerous Grammys, Billboard Music Awards and a bunch of MTV Awards. Maroon Five will appear on Thursday and Friday October 4 and 5 at Istora Senayan Jakarta at 8pm.
A new musical drama Menjemput Impian (To Go For a Dream), will come to Graha Bhakti Budaya Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta on August 3 through 5. The play, which is directed by Yusril SS, tells a story of a harmonious tie between Indonesia and China. It will feature for the first time a constantly moving modern art; a mash up of classical, traditional and modern dances; traditional poems with a traditional and original soundtrack. The show starts at 7-10pm and is open to public.

Ravelex Campus DJ Championship 2012 The national campus DJ competition is back this year after achieving success on its last installment. Ravelex Campus DJ Championship 2012 sets to showcase college students skilled in working the DJ equipment and ready to show their worth. All participants who have sent in their mix tapes until July 6 will go through further auditions before eventually facing each other during the selection through the final stage at Kuningan City on July 13-15. This year’s champion of the Ravelex Campus DJ competition will be sent to Zouk Out Singapore 2012. Let’s show our support to the young talents who will participate in the Ravelex Camus DJ Championship 2012.
The Swedish alt-rock band are on their way to Jakarta. The band that was formed in 1992 consisting of LarsOlof Johansson, Peter Svensson, Bengt Lagerberg, Nina Persson and Magnus Sveningsson. They debuted with the album Emmerdale but gained recognition when the single “Lovefool” was included in the movie soundtrack of Romeo + Juliet starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Claire Danes. Other hit singles including “Erase/ Rewind” and “My Favorite Game” from the bestselling album Gran Turismo. Good news for their fans in Indonesia, The Cardigans will perform live in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 14 at the Indoor Tennis Stadium, Senayan. So what are you waiting for? Acousticas dibentuk pada bulan November 2011 dan terdiri dari anggota yang masing masing punya latar belakang kesukaan terhadap beragam musik dari mulai Jazz, Funk, Rock, Pop maupun R&B. Karena perbedaan tersebut, membuat band ini menjadi lebih unik dan punya sound yang komplit. Acousticas terdiri dari Asti Asha Amanda (vocalist), Richard Karnadi (vocalist), Abraham Tombeng / Baam ( Bassist), Nanda (guitarist) dan Hendra Anugrah Akbar (drummer). Beberapa orang dari anggotanya punya pengalaman tampil dalam berbagai acara akbar seperti sang vokalis Asti, yang pernah membuka penampilan dari konser Ronan Keating di Bali, lalu tampil di perhelatan besar musik Java Jazz Festival dan juga bekerja sama dengan rekan musisi seperti Gruvi dalam proses pengerjaan album mereka. Acousticas tidak hanya piawai dalam membawakan lagu milik musisi lain, namun mereka juga menggubahnya dengan versi mereka dengan bagus. Acousticas was formed on November 2011 and consists of members from varying backgrounds who love diverse music genres, such as jazz, funk, rock, pop, and R&B. Acousticas’ members are Asti Amanda (vocal), Richard Karnadi (vocal), Abraham Tombeng/Baam (bass), Nanda (guitar), and Hendra Anugrah Akbar (drums). Asti, the vocalist, once got an opportunity to act as an opening performer in the Ronan Keating concert in Bali, and she also appeared at the Java Jazz and worked together with Gruvi for their album. Acousticas doesn’t only play cover songs, but they also rearrange it with their own renditions.

Reynaldi yang lebih dikenal dengan nama DJ Reynald, bisa dibilang adalah salah satu DJ Indonesia yang menorehkan prestasi. Karirnya sebagai DJ dimulai pada tahun 91 sebagai resident di Fire Discotheque, kemudian klab Calypso dan selanjutnya adalah Musro. Prestasinya pada tahun 96, diperoleh Reynald dengan memecahkan rekor tampil selama 46 jam plus 4 menit dalam sebuah acara hingga tercatat dalam buku rekor MURI. Kualitasnya pun semakin tidak diragukan dengan ditariknya Reynald untuk menjadi salah satu resident di klab Vertigo dan berpindah ke X2 saat klab tersebut dibuka. DJ nama besar dunia yang pernah berbagi dek dengannya adalah Hernan Cattaneo, Tarentella, Mario Piu, Parks & Wilson, Dave Seaman, Danny Howells, Markus Schulz, Marc Vedo, Benny Benassi, dan sederet bintang internasional lainnya. Tidak hanya itu saja, Reynald yang pernah jadi duta klab X2, berbicara di pentas luar negeri, seperti Singapore, Malaysia, London, dan satu kiblat club scene dunia yaitu Ibiza. Reynaldi, also known as DJ Reynald, is an Indonesian DJs who breaks records. His DJing career was launched in 1991 by joining Fire Discotheque as its resident DJ before moving to Calypso club and Musro. In 1996 Reynald went into the MURI record book after performing non-stop at an event for 46 hours and 4 minutes. DJ Mikey Moran started his career after he found his passion DJing after watching the movie Groove and also visiting Ibiza watching big names spin in 2002. If anything captures the lazy, hazy, languid days of summer, this must surely be it. Here in Jakarta, which lies just south of the equator, midsummer is technically around December-January, but no matter: Now is the time of the long school holidays, while the fashion world releases its spring/summer collections in time for April/May and the months that follow. In the capital, one immediate benefit of the school break is a noticeable reduction in traffic congestion, particularly during the morning peak. The downside can be felt in Bali: Those of you who manage a getaway to the so-called island of the gods will find yourself caught in Jakarta-like traffic jams that seem to consist entirely of vehicles with Jakarta or Surabaya registration plates... Euro and Wimbledon 2012 have just finished, and what a glorious soccer and tennis opening they provided to this summer’s feast of sport. The Olympics are just around the corner, so put your feet up as you enjoy the best in the world striving to be faster, stronger or higher than their rivals. Alternatively, you could take to the shops in search of bargains in the Great Jakarta Sale, with many participating venues opening until midnight on certain days to tempt even the most resistant of shoppers when the city’s roads are relatively traffic-free. But wait... this year, candidates for the governorship of the capital city are hard at work campaigning for the support of the Jakarta electorate. The rallies are a mix of political theatre and all the fun of the fair but inevitably produce localised traffic chaos around the chosen venues. It goes without saying that the “day of rest” seems to be targeted for the biggest rallies ... If you do remain in the capital, make the most of the relatively quieter days during the week for it will not be long before the new school term begins and the traffic will be back to “normal”. But let’s worry about that later. A couplet from another summertime song immortalised by Nat ‘King’ Cole encapsulates what the current season is all about: And on the beach you’ll see the girls in their bikinis As cute as ever but they never get ‘em wet ...

he name Carrot Academy may sound like a particularly whimsical college from cartoon land somewhere, but this school of illustration is making a name for itself through the sheer quality of its students’ creations. From illustrations that rival the best of US, European, and Japanese comics, to those that would not look out of place in world class advertising campaigns; the academy has many local artists across the country hoping to take part in the phenomenon. The only thing is; this academy may yet be too small to hold the many interests heading its way. Geared towards creating students with marketable art skills, the academy’s aim to reposition design school alumnus as an intrinsic part of big business seems to have paid off. Although the school’s rather blunt commercialization of artistic expertise may tick off art purists, Carrot Academy’s founder Putra Adi Setiyawan stands by his conviction that this is what it takes to amplify the prestige and, more importantly, the tangible value of someone – anyone – who says they want to draw for life. Many of Carrot’s students have gone on to work
in the commercial field, particularly in a variety of marketing and advertising campaigns. Located in a modest looking residential-houseturned-school in the Kayu Putih area of East Jakarta, the academy was established in December of 2008. And though it managed to gradually build its reputation through word of mouth between the country’s numerous art communities online, it wasn’t until last year that it began building an almost cultish following. By early 2012, the privately owned school’s four part-time teachers were positively struggling to contain the excitement; being able to only host a limited number of students and having to turn down countless prospective disciples. The limit means that there are currently only around 100 students able to enroll. This was simply a natural by product of the academy’s students’ obvious abilities. Though there are myriad other illustration schools around the country, they have mostly been focused on a specific style; lacking the agility of Carrot’s students. According to Putra, by doing so, most Indonesian illustration schools inadvertently limit their students’ real world prospects; perpetually
demoting the art of drawing into mere hobby and robbing it of its own potential worth. For Putra, the school sets out to disprove the notion that the best case scenario for Indonesian illustrators is to be a comic drawer. “Illustration should mean you can draw anything in any format,” the 31-year old says. “We’re trying to show that there is plenty of work an artist is able to do in the real world.” He cites examples such as working in the design department of companies to being a recognized tattoo artist or custom motorcycle painter. This commitment of “opening people’s eyes” towards the endless possibilities available for illustrators is encapsulated in the academy’s Vitamin-A-filled, eye-benefitting fruit, moniker. “What are important in being a good illustrator are two things: a good perception and passion,” Putra says. He explains that “good perception” refers to understanding the doors opened through good illustration skills, while passion is having the energy of objectively understanding the aim of having drawing abilities. “One of my students discovered that his true passion was in accounting after he enrolled, so
he was able to objectively see what he wanted to do with his drawing skills. That goes back to our aim of opening their perception,” he adds. Another “myth” Putra sets out to dispel is the notion that some people are naturally more talented than others in their artistic abilities. He is certain, through his own belief that he himself was far from naturally “talented,” that every one of his students has the same chance to draw an awe-inspiring drawing. Putra is equally appalled at the Manga, or Japanese comic, orientation of many wannabe illustrators. “We’ve got to be rid of this habit of local illustrators running with excuses like ‘I’m only able to draw Manga-style’ or ‘I’m just not a whiz,’ before trying their utter best,” he says. A former musician who spent many nights playing everything from Top 40 tunes to heavy metal burners around the city’s cafes, Putra moved to the Jakarta from Temanggung, a small regency in Central Java. Though he managed to survive through paying gigs and paid songwriting, constantly meeting and conversing with friends who were heavily into drawing both

professionally and as a hobby. This eventually led him into digging through his childhood and teen-years comics, mostly culled from the Manga style. Unsatisfied with the uncreative stiffness of local art studies, Putra dropped out of his Visual Communication Design studies in Interstudy University and began to seriously ponder the possibility of opening up his own school – the kind where people would actually grow into better artists. He was particularly inspired by Singapore’s IFS (Imaginary Friends Studio), an art studio who, according to Putra has “80% of its students from Indonesia.” “They were extremely flexible in what they could illustrate,” he adds. Along with some friends, Putra says he “gambled” away his savings to rent the house in Cikini. To start things off, Putra and his entourage also became part time tutors at the academy, though the early days were anything but smooth sailing. “We had OBs (Office Boys) quitting all time and stealing our equipment; we had the early tutors quitting right away after Carrot was established to work in better jobs; and worse, we had a former security guy completely rob us blind one day, stealing almost all of our equipment including computers,” Putra explains. “It was far more challenging than I thought it would be.”
Putra trudged on, recruiting a few new tutors, rounding up to the current 4 (including himself), all of whom still work other jobs to survive. It isn’t clear why Carrot’s students are able to churn out such quality illustrations; but it’s very likely it has a lot to do with Putra, whose ability to work within both the “analog” and digital illustration realm gives him, and his school, an edge. Samudra Utama, a Carrot student, says that the skills he learned from the academy are immense. “I learned how to digitally edit the images in a way that I never did in other schools, though I can’t really explain it. It was just different and more powerful,” he says. “Maybe it was the closeness we felt with the tutors, like they weren’t teachers but buddies you could hang out with.” Another student, Banu Satrio says that Carrot’s strength seems to be in its balanced ability to teach everything from “traditional to digital art.” As for the academy’s characteristic strength in digital manipulation, Putra says that it is again another way to prepare the students towards the way they need to work in the real world. “They have to be digitally prepared. Right now, everything is digitized, including communications with the clients. These days, for illustrators, the laptop is their studio.” [Marcel Thee]

In Our Heads ack in the early naughties Hot Chip burst onto the scene with a very particular sound. Like their contemporary James Murphy and other DFA-associated acts, their early albums inspired brooding, snarkiness, and dancing in equal measures, and were a mixture of quirky production, indie kid attitude, and infectious funk. Underneath Alexis Taylor’s distinct voice, however, there was always a sense of something guarded and ironic. That changed dramatically with 2009’s One Life Stand, a record of almost embarrassing earnestness and devotion to love and happiness. It gave the sense that the group had settled into an identity and it breathed new life into their song writing. It was a lot more adult and comfortable, but in truth, it was also rather dull.
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
Three years have passed, with band member Joe Goddard releasing an excellent dancefloor-driven album as part of The 2 Bears, updating the humour and funk of Hot Chip’s first albums. In Our Heads sounds as if he has brought some of that energy back to the group. This is the rare album that has just as much groove as lyrical strength, and it shows listeners how dance music can be smart without rubbing your face in it. Pop hooks and big synthy sounds blend beautifully with heartfelt sentiments. “How Do You Do It” is a paean to love and a celebration of life backed by a slab of late 80s disco funk. “Look at Where We Are” drops the big-room sound and takes a successful left turn into guitar-driven quiet storm balladry. “Flutes” is a slow-burner with an infectious hook and an 808 state feel, while “Let Me Be Him” brings a Peter Gabriel sensibility to the spaced out R&B sound that has taken over these days, shifting into italo territory by the end of its seven minutes. Overall, the album could probably do with a better track order, but perhaps this is intentional. It has the feeling of a Prince album, in that whether you like slow crooning or upbeat funkiness, you’re likely to be hitting the fast forward button quite a bit. With a little patience, however, and an open mind, it’s an enjoyable ride, and one that suggests that the group has plenty of tricks up its sleeve for the years to come.

love Furla for its quality material and the relatively reasonable prices for their luscious leather. Furla gained some momentum with its Candy line, a speedy-like jelly tote, that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. While I have to admit that I’m not much of a jellyanything fan, when it comes to outfit and accessories, Furla remains as one of brands that I respect. Just recently, Furla came out with the Piper, a bandoleer-style tote bag that is super practical, with pockets and removable shoulder strap. I instantly fell in love with them! John Paul
A Classical Guitarist with an Indonesian Flavor By Erza S.T.

all the classical music varieties existing in Indonesia, classical guitar is perhaps the one that we don’t get to see so much. However, this doesn’t mean that we don’t have bona fide classical guitarists in Indonesia. It is actually the opposite. Names such as Sudirman Leman and Jubing Kristianto are pioneers who built their reputation through out the classical guitar scene. One of Indonesia’s most promising and talented classical guitarist is John Paul. The guitarist, who fell in love with guitar after being influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Agustin Barrios, is currently doing postgraduate studies in guitar performance at the Koblenz International Guitar Academy in Germany under the guidance of Italian maestro Aniello Desiderio. He holds an undergraduate degree from Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga, Indonesia, and a Diploma from the Internationale Sommerakademie Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. His current studies have been made possible by generous supporters including Yayasan Musik Sastra Indonesia.
The Beat Jakarta was quite fortunate to catch up with this talented guitarist who just arrived back in town for summer holidays.
TBJ: Who is your inspiration in the guitar world? JP: My professor, Aniello Desiderio. In responding to this question I attempted repeatedly to explain why. But words evade me. Somebody is just going to have to bring him here on an Indonesian nation-wide tour, so people can enjoy the blessed privilege of experiencing him playing live in concert. TBJ: What do you think about the classical music scene in Indonesia these days? JP: It’s getting better and better. TBJ: There aren’t many classical guitarists compared to pianists or violinists. Has this fact change? Do we have more interest from the younger generation now? JP: It depends on how much “many” is, and how important quantity is. I think what is important is that everyone should have the chance to discover and develop their talent to their maximum. Even if there were a huge interest from the younger generation, the question is, how many qualified classical guitar teachers are available in Indonesia to cater to such a need? I don’t want to belittle anyone, but I do think there should be laws that regulate the qualifications required to teach in music schools. It’s a typical mistake as a beginner to think that anyone who seems to play better than you is a suitable teacher. A year later you will realizes you just copied all the mistakes your teacher does, who still tries
to convince you that as you “master” the guitar, you will get used to the pain in your back and wrist etc. Yayasan Musik Sastra Indonesia (YMSI) has a program called “Children in Harmony” that auditions children for talent and will, and grants scholarships enabling them to study with excellent well trained teachers. For guitar, Sudirman Leman is still at the forefront. I stongly recommend him to anyone who really wants be a professional guitarist. TBJ: We heard about your upcoming concert in Jakarta, could you please share some info about it? JP: Well, it’s a charity concert to help raise funds for underprivileged kids to resume school. I work together with Full Life Community. sites.google. com/site/fullifecommunity/ My own studies have been supported by so many, including Yayasan Musik Sastra Indonesia. Ananda Sukarlan donated a piece to me. It was bought and subsequently dedicated to my biggest contributor, Jim Basick, whom I consider my own father. TBJ: What is your future goal? JP: Oh dear, there’s just too many. I guess I just want to finish my studies first with the best results possible, and make a plentiful living from performing and teaching. Why plentiful? So I can help others. Of course, I’m not going to wait around until I’m rich to do what I can, which is much more than I once thought. TBJ: John Paul by definition is? JP: The Beatles minus George and Ringo? Hahaha… I think God is still in the process of defining me according to His will. Can’t go wrong with God.

TBJ: Of all music types that guitars can do, why did you choose classical music? JP: I didn’t. It chose me; curiously late compared to anyone I’ve heard of.

As an educator, John Paul is also very committed. He was a member of the guitar faculty at Jakarta Conservatory of Music, and was recently invited to give a guitar workshop at the Faculty of Performing Arts at Satya Wacana Christian University, in Salatiga, Indonesia. He currently teaches at Musikschule Wagner in Koblenz, Germany. Aside from performing in charity concerts, he also volunteers to teach underprivileged children free of charge.

As a performer, John Paul is not only committed to introducing the standard classical repertoire to the Indonesian audience, but he is also dedicated to the dissemination of works by Indonesian composers. He performed the Indonesian premiere of Ananda Sukarlan’s first composition for solo guitar, “The 5 Lovers of Drupadi”, as well as the first public performance of Mr. Sukarlan’s piece for guitar and soprano/tenor, “By the Seaside: Twilight”, which was kindly donated to support John Paul’s studies.

they taste great even without having to dunk them in the soy sauce dip. Now, if there are a couple ‘masterpieces’ at Thai Alley, it must be these two: The first one is the Khao Ohb Nam Liaeb (45k) or fried rice with Chinese black olives and chicken, with fresh chili, lime, shallot, and cashew nuts. This is a nice twist to the old fried rice recipe; the black olives gave it a nice color, and the chili, lime, shallot, and cashew nuts were put on the side at first. But after mixing them with the rice, voila! It was like having another kind of rice dish altogether! A must try dish here! The next one is the Somboon Pong Kari (99k) or Thai-style chili crab. The crab is served with tasty stir fried yellow curry mixed with egg, onions, and spring onion. We have another winner on our hands! You can have this type of curry with your choice of squid, shrimp, or soft shell crab as well. The sweet Man Cham (29k) was our pick of dessert; tapioca cooked in syrup and topped with coconut cream. Our order of mocktails the Rayong (45k) - peach chuncks, lime, mint leaves, lavender syrup, and soda, and the Samui (45k) orange chunks, honey dew melons, lychee, and melon syrup were both very refreshing. Thai Food is about the celebration of the senses. Its flavors, aromas and colors would definitely light up every sense. hai Alley is a new Thai restaurant located in Pacific Place Mall where it opened its doors about two months ago. The restaurant has a unique look about it. The concept is to bring the feel of having the best of Thai street cuisine inside an air conditioned mall. The only heat you’ll feel is from the spicy food, and that’s a good thing! The interior does look like an alley in the heart of Bangkok. There’s a façade of a shophouse here, stacks of bottled drink crates there, and the street lamps complete with electrical poles give it an edgy ambiance. The wooden furniture also adds a colorful touch. The owners of Thai Alley wanted to bring authentic Thai street food to Jakarta, and we were informed that they went to Bangkok and sampled as many delicious local eateries as they could. On their trips, they also found a team of Thai chefs who were ready to bring their expertise to Jakarta. We recently visited them for a late lunch and we had a very tasty Thai treat! We started with the Yam Mamuang (32k); spicy mango salad with chili and lime juice. A delicious assault on the taste buds, the spicy and sour appetizer dish is a perfect start to our culinary journey to Thailand. Of course, we just cannot visit a Thai restaurant without ordering the Tom Yam Goong (39k); that ubiquitous Thai favorite hot and spicy soup. Aroy (‘Delicious’ in Thai)! The Gai Hor Bai Toey (29k) or marinated chicken in pandan leaf also made it to our table. We loved how well marinated the chicken was;

is a labor of love for two old college buddies with a passion for good food. The name itself is actually derived from a kind of tuna typically found in the waters around Japan, but they decided that it’s catchy enough for their eatery. It is a semi-outdoor restaurant, located at Cosmo Japanese Supermarket near Blok M area. As we arrived there, the aroma of meat sizzling on the grill was just too tantalizing.

This is a very casual place, Facebook: TokyoSkipjack but the folks at Skipjack are dead serious about their stuff. And judging from the packed house that evening, this is the new place to be for steaks! The meats here are of excellent quality. Weighing at about 200 grams each, the US Sirloin (145k), Tenderloin (165k), and Rib Eye (155k) were superbly succulent. Yes, they do have more budgetfriendly choices of New Zealand Sirloin (65k), Rib Eye (75k), and Tenderloin (95k), but the US ones are simply to die for!

Why not indulge yourself with “The King of Steak” that is Skipjack’s US Porterhouse (275k)? All 500 grams of beefy goodness that is big in size and big in flavor. One side of the porterhouse is the wonderful full-bodied taste of strip loin steak, while the other is the luxurious tenderness of filet mignon - the best of both worlds, indeed! The meats are the main stars here, but the side dishes play a supporting role worthy of winning the Food Oscars themselves! The seemingly simple golden brown French fries are seasoned with Balinese sea salt for an extra oomph. The sweet Corn Batayaki is a corn on the cob brushed with a yummy mixture of soy sauce and butter.The mashed potato is called Mitsuba Mash; mitsuba is a type of Japanese parsley with a fresh, slightly peppery flavor. Put together, it gives the creamy mashed potato a certain texture and taste like no other. Last but not least, the Green Salad with Japanese Dressing is a delightful mix of Japanese ‘Horenzo’ spinach with homemade Goma dressing. They are all vying for your attention, but the good thing is you can choose two sides to accompany your steak!
Skipjack is giving other steak eateries a run for their money, and rightly so. This is one highly recommended place for steaks. Ask them about their philosophies of Kodawari and Kiwameru; you’ll understand why Skipjack is fast becoming the favorite for Jakarta’s steak lovers. (Budi Iskandar)

The meats and side dishes are all good, but the sauces here are pure genius! Skipjack has four types of homemade sauces, each one as tasty as the other. The Homemade Barbecue and Creamy Mushroom are classic companions to your choice of steak, but the two most popular here are the Wasabi Butter and the Japanese Chimichurri. The former is a buttery blend of sauce with just a hint of a kick from the wasabi. The latter can be described as “When Tokyo Meets Tango”; a Japanese take on Argentina’s national steak sauce, the Chimichurri. Here, the more traditional parsley is substituted with the Mitsuba. AMS stands for Justice – Art & Music on stage, a yearly event put together by the law students at the University of Indonesia. Ever since it’s initiation leading up to it’s 9th official event, JAMS has become a platform for youth to channel their appreciation of art and music in a positive manner. This year the students have decided to go with a theme titled ‘Expand the Creativity, Preserve The Originality’ to bring about an awareness towards the importance of social law and Intellectual rights in the development of a better creative industry in Indonesia. Everything from music, art, product design, architecture, fashion and in all places, the youth are given a chance to create art which carries with it an intellectual property that’s worth protecting. It is the efforts like these that shed a light on Indonesia’s ongoing battle with piracy and these student hope to use JAMS as a social spearhead against plagiarism. In support of this event big name artists such as Gugun & the Blues Shelter, Efek Rumah Kaca and an array of public figures from their respective fields are set to lighten things up and kick things along at the Salihara Theatre July 14.

exhibition dedicated to the founding father of this nation titled “The Energy of Bung Karno” was put on show at Taman Ismail Marzuki. This week-long event was a coming together of different artists from all over Indonesia paying an Ode to the man who’s ideas and efforts made this country independant. A mixture of installation art and canvas art, the exhibition depicted the energy this enigmatic individual had in the times of struggle and gaining independence from the then Dutch colonization. Soekarno’s family life and hobbies are also depicted in these work of arts. There were good reviews all round when visitors were asked about this exhibition as they felt that it was more than just another display of art, but a beautifully told story of a man many say has never been replaced by any other president. The artists themselves admitted that they were very enthusiastic and willing to do this event as they themselves found inspiration in the energy and individual that was Bung Karno.

Celebrating the Portico Terrace Bistro’s third anniversary, OPCO Group brought in the winner or Junior Master Chef Australia season two, Greta Yaxley. Greta who is still 12 years old showed her cooking skills in a demo at Portico. She mesmerized both kids and adults who loved her yummy dishes, such as feta tortellini with butter sage and raisins, citrus and tarragon chicken with walnut orange and pomegranate salad, and Middle Eastern meringue with berry compote and almond short bread. All those dishes will also be available at Portico for a limited time.

Selayaknya sebuah perjalanan imajinasi, sesuai dengan konsep yang dituang ke dalam Fable, acaranya dikemas secara baik dengan terlebih dahulu memperkenalkan tempat, dan kemudian para undangan pun diwajibkan untuk menikmati sajian kuliner maupun 5 jenis cocktails racikan khusus dari para bartendernya sambil mendengarkan musik yang dimainkan oleh para resident. Setelah dibuai dengan beragam sajian, pengunjung pun kembali ke alam nyata dan perjalanan acara pun usai saat memasuki malam.
A media event was held at Fable Lounge & Dining to introduce the place to us intrepid journalists. The event was packaged like an imaginary trip. Firstly, they introduced the place, and then all the guests were required to enjoy the culinary dishes and five types of cocktails that were made by the bartenders while listening to the music from the resident DJ. After being pampered by much food, the guests were back to reality and the trip was over when night descended.

Skateboarding Day

The Go Skateboarding Day celebration in Jakarta last week was inspired by an alternative American tradition started in 2003. In 2007 the tradition was picked up in Indonesia by Happen Skateboarding magazine. The fifth Go Skateboarding Day this year was opened with a street parade that started from the main street in the Senayan area and ended at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. After an opening speech by Minister Andi Malarangeng, the day’s program was continued with a number of skateboarding contests like longest ollie, highest ollie, continuous trick kick flip and games of S.K.A.T.E. The all-day celebration finally came to an end at 6pm.

Ia sempat menyanyikan sedikit bagian dari lagu “Birthday” (The Beatles) untuk Jakarta, dan penonton pun membalas dengan lagu “Happy Birthday” untuknya. Jason Mraz menggabungkan berbagai genre dalam musiknya dan berhasil memukau penonton dengan hitsnya seperti “You And I Both”, “Lucky”, “The Remedy”, dan “I’m Yours” yang selalu ditunggu. Lagu terbarunya “I Won’t Give Up” menutup konser yang intim tapi seru ini.

Acara diramaikan oleh DJ Cream, kolaborasi antara Live PA dari Angels dan Duo Percussion, ditambah pula dengan MC Giri yang mengawal acara hingga usai. Acara ini dikunjungi oleh para tamu yang memenuhi Immigrant dan mengikuti acara dari awal hingga usai pada pagi harinya.

Visitors to Immigrant last Saturday night were welcomed by a Ferrari F1 car that was parked by the entrance. Guests came in early for the program and stayed until closing time at early hour the next morning. Speed was a factor at this party.

Sejam kemudian, Sashi dan rekan rekan nya yang tergabung dalam Drew band langsung menggulirkan lagu-lagu cover version yang dimainkan lewat format akustik. Malam itu, Soul Train punya tema “Tribute to MJ”, dan Drew pun memainkan hits kepunyaan sang megastar tersebut, seperti lagu ‘Bad’ yang dimainkan dengan sangat bagus. Begitu pun dengan DJ Jeremy Jay yang tampil setelahnya, mengalunkan beberapa lagu MJ yang berirama disko. Soul Train akan kembali digelar pada hari Rabu di kesempatan berikut dengan menampilkan performa bintang lainnya.
Another Soul Train event was held at Otel Lobby and this time the guest star that evening was none other than Drew. At Around 9pm, DJ Gerry started to warm up the crowd. An hour later, Sashi and Co played some acoustic cover songs. Soul Train had a theme “Tribute to MJ”, and Drew played some of the king of pop’s hits, like “Bad”. So did DJ Jeremy Jay who played some disco fueled MJ songs. Soul Train will be back on Wednesdays and will present more new stars soon.

Selepas Reza Karami dan resident DJ Ferra Allony memanaskan suasana, acara yang juga dipandu oleh MC D’Truck ini mulai dibanjiri oleh para tamu menjelang tengah malam. Acara kian ramai dengan kehadiran kolaborasi Live PA dari VPD, dan Fashion Parade yang menampilkan para model yang tergabung dalam LV C&C. Selanjutnya, DJ Ade Bro lebih memanaskan suasana dan DJ Bobby Suryadi pun tampil dengan Audio Visual DJ Set yang membuat LUV’s semakin panas.

Satu hal yang berbeda dari party yang biasanya, acara ini dibuka dan dipadu dengan kesenian tradisional seperti Lenggang Manis. Acara yang gratis untuk umum ini, selain menghadirkan kompetisi DJ dan Dance, Eksibisi Otomotif, Food & Fashion Bazaar, juga dimeriahkan dengan sederet bintang internasional dan lokal. Tampilan unik antara DJ Naro dan Balawan “The Magic Fingers” menghasilkan kolaborasi dengan tehnik tinggi, sementara puncak acaranya dimeriahkan oleh tampilnya DJ Jerome Isma-Ae dan Dinka yang sempat bermain secara back to back. Acara kolaborasi dance dan ethnic budaya lokal ini, sangat diharapkan untuk digelar kembali pada tahun depan. Acara Rave Party yang sangat beda!
Finally, a rave party that got full support from the local government. DJ Festival 2012 was a cooperative effort between the Department of Tourism and Culture of DKI Jakarta and the Enjoy Jakarta program, and others. The party opened with traditional acts, such as Lenggang Manis, and it made the party feel very cultural. Besides presenting a DJ and dance competition, automotive exhibition, food & fashion bazaar, the free event was also rounded off with many international and local stars. The unique performance between DJ Naro and Balawan “The Magic Fingers” demonstrated what two highly skilled artists could do. The peak of the event presented DJ Jerome Isma-Ae and Dinka who played back to back. Overall, the collaboration of EDM and local ethnic culture was a hit and expect the same party to return next year.

Bali to open a cartoon museum Plans to open a cartoon museum honouring the art and humour of local cartoonists was confirmed by Govenor Pastika. “It is very good to see the chronological history of our people in a humorous yet smart way through a cartoon museum,” said Pastika at the event, Drawing Cartoon Faces Bali Mandara at Denpasar’s Cultural Park. The Bali Chairman of the United Indonesian Cartoonist Society (Pakarti), Ida Bagus Matinaya, said caricature art in Bali has developed since 1981. “We have many meaningful and educated works,” he said. “Cartoon art is special and paradoxical since the artwork can either make people happy or sad. Every developing country uses cartoons to explain its social phenomenon.” He also pointed out that ethics must exist as in journalism. The cartoonist should not insult other tribes, religions or races and insults against people with disabilities are not acceptable.The Deputy Chariman of Partika, Made Gede Parama Artha, added that the museum could attract many tourists and both old and new works could be displayed. No less than three venues are tucked inside the chic, sprawling premises, and with the 307-room hotel venue set to open within the next couple of months it’s clear that The Stones is going to be a tough cookie to beat. For those looking for the ultimate in a stylishly chilled afternoon, Infamy rooftop bar & lounge with jacuzzi opens from 12 noon and is the perfect sunset spot for a cocktail or two. Downstairs Blue Sapphire club opens between 7pm-2am (3 on weekends), with a live music program for the early crew before the house DJ cranks up the tempo from 12 ‘til drop. Dining wise, the cavernous upstairs restaurant Salt of the Earth provides a casual dining spot with a lip-smacking Western menu and fresh seafood for lunch and dinner, all the while affording stunning views across Kuta Beach. In case all that isn’t enough, a trendy decking area out front boasts comfy sun loungers and an inviting pool to cool off in – beach club style. A ‘small bites’ menu featuring tasty morsels such as fries, calamari, meatballs and Thai paper rice rolls will keep the grazers happy, while a new Indonesian specials menu showcases a selection of the archipelago’s finest and most renowned dishes. Having nipped in for a spot of late lunch with a couple of mates on holiday, we decided to take a punt on the local menu so I can introduce them to a bit of home cooking, courtesy of local chef Des Yanto. Yanto has a wealth of experience around town, having flashed up in such hallowed kitchens as Mozaic and KuDeTa, and it’s clear that the menu choices – both local and Western, have been well thought out and should keep the majority of diners salivating for more. We decide to go the whole hog and order up the Soto Ayam (chicken broth 40k), Mie Goreng (fried noodles 40k), Sop Buntut (beef soup 55k), Gule Kambing (lamb 55k) and Nasi Goreng Ayam (chicken fried rice 55k) to share out and get a taste of everything. This turns out to be a good move, as everything is hastily devoured, with not a morsel left over – the dishes easily as good as you’d find around town (which is saying
