T

here has been a lot of action on the nightlife front lately and unfortunately not all of it very good. Besides the regrettable incident at Blowfish a couple of weeks ago which now seems to be passing over quickly, the 2am curfew from Dinas Pariwisata that actually came into effect the night before, took most people by surprise. Many people thought it was a consequence of the unfortunate affair of the Saturday night but in fact it was already on the way. Not a bad thing if you have to work in the morning but for those to whom the weekend equates to staying out late and sleeping all day, a proverbial spanner had been jammed into the works. Personally, I believe it wouldn’t hurt having a nightlife that started and finished earlier so people who did have to make a living could fit work and social life into the same day for a change. Anyway, as was expected, some of the bars aren’t closing so early and it will be interesting to see what actually happens over the next few weeks with this new ruling. Meanwhile, there’s a lot going on in the next couple of weeks including the Djakarta Warehouse Project which has moved to Pantai Carnaval Ancol next weekend, and a load more. Check the What’s On and HereNow pages inside to find out all the details.

Red Square Wednesday 21 April 10pm

The man who has a habit of bringing thousands of people together under one roof is once again bringing his trance flavors to the Indonesia’s shores. The Beat had a chat before the pilgrimage begins…

Ferry Corsten First of all, how have things been since you were last in Indonesia? Has it been a lot of time on the road or have you found yourself back in the studio? Yeah, I’ve been doing both a lot. We have released the remixed album of my Twice In A Blue Moon Artist Album. Also we released the digitally remastered version of my original System F - Out Of The Blue album and my most recent new compilation called ‘Once Upon A Night’. I also launched a show based on this concept, of which I am really proud. So besides travelling the globe for quite some time, the studio is also my place to be.

032 | beatmag.com

You’ve certainly reached a height in your career that sees you playing to some of the biggest crowds throughout the world. Is there anywhere you’ve played lately that you’ve found more inspiring or felt more connected to? For my new compilation Once Upon A Night, I am touring with a show concept called Once Upon A Night: The Experience. It’s an amazing experience. We’ve made killer visuals, a fantastic production… so everywhere I get to play under this concept, I get goose bumps. The reaction of the crowd is really amazing! Your performances are certainly renowned for

being a lot bigger than just one man behind two turntables; the stage production, lighting and FX are generally set up to be awe inspiring for those on the dance floor. So do you have a lot of personal involvement in the production side of things? Definitely. The first tour concept, Twice In A Blue Moon (which was based on my last artist album), was a project I worked on for months in 2008 and toured with in 2009. It was a real treat for me to work with people who were transferring my music to a show level. Every aspect, from the type of production, artists involved, the visuals made were all inspired by my music. Learning from this experience, the Once Upon A Night Show is something even more exciting as we’ve stepped up our game! I also worked on this month’s before the actual show. Quite often artists who are used to playing to auditoriums of fans still find the small underground shows to be the most exhilarating; do you get the chance to sneak off for smaller private gigs these days? Definitely. I think that it’s great to have a balance in doing things. Also, I do love playing for small clubs just as I love playing for festivals, exhibition halls and concert venues. It‘s phenomenal to play for 5,000 to 20,000 people. It’s just an ocean of heads bobbing and jumping to your beats. But playing for a smaller club and/or venue allows you to really connect with the crowd. DJ’s aren’t known for living the most conservative of lifestyles; have you managed to find a happy medium between work and play? Any wake up calls over the course of your career where you needed to reevaluate your lifestyle or habits? I have a beautiful daughter who is almost 2 so she keeps me on the right track. I am really a down to earth guy who happens to DJ and produce. Nothing beats coming home and seeing the smiling face of my little girl. Does being on the road diminish your ability to maintain a steady relationship or keep you happily involved in many?

You should ask my wife! Ha ha ha, no I do the best I can. It’s not easy being away for a long time and I do miss my wife and daughter. But hey, that’s life and luckily they are getting used to it. Most travelers return from overseas with at least one story of misadventure; ever had any complete freak out moments on your travels over the years? I had to play in Brazil once and there was some freak that pointed his gun at me and my driver. My agent at the time lost all my items, I was lucky to be spared. That’s probably the worst thing that has happened to me. What would you consider some of your personal favorite tracks from over the years? Any that will always hold a special significance for you beyond others? Out Of The Blue under my System F guise was my big breakthrough so that’s special to me. Also tracks like Punk and Rock Your Body Rock keep a place in my heart. They gave me a whole new crowd as it wasn’t the usual Ferry Corsten sound. Made of Love from my latest album is also still a big one. Hearing people sing along with the tracks you’ve created is just fantastic. I like to surprise people so watch out for my new artist album which will come in 2011. Which plans for 2010 are you most excited about? At the moment I am touring the globe with Once Upon A Night: The Experience and the club shows. This is very exciting. This new tour is built around my new compilation Once Upon A Night which had its worldwide release only a week ago. The compilation hit number 1 on Itunes USA within 3 days. This was a great moment also.

Ferry Corsten will be hitting Jakarta for the Djakarta Warehouse Project 2010 at Ancol next week and it’s set to be huge. Get down there to be swept up in his beats along with those of Marco V, Kaskade, Fischerspooner, Shortee Blitz and plenty more...

Action, Sci-Fi. Director: Jon Favreau. Writers: Justin Theroux, Stan Lee. Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rockwell, Jon Favreau, Don Cheadle.

Iron Man 2

Carefree millionaire Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is back to save the world in ‘Iron Man 2’ – or, maybe not. After sharing his identity with the world, Stark is not so keen on sharing the Iron Man technology with the U.S. Government as well, who want to use it to duplicate a second powerful suit. Loyal Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and hot new addition to the cast, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), are fighting his corner, but his opponent this time is the mighty Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), who’s ready to give him the hardest lesson ever. The cast of ‘Iron Man 2’ has been formed in Heaven indeed, with Paul Bettany joining the force and Stan Lee appearing as Larry King. There’s no reason not to be first in the queue on May 7th, to see Robert Downey Junior serve up a spot-on second helping!

Agora

Hypatia, in the meantime, was another kind of superheroine. Her sole power was her mind, and she came from our ancient world. She appears in historical drama ‘Agora’, played by beautiful English

Widow. Buat para geeks, jangan lewatkan penampilan Stan Lee sebagai Larry King. Kurang apa lagi?

actress, Rachel Weisz. ‘Agora’ tells the story of a slave who turns to Christianity in the hope of finding freedom, and at the same time, falls in love with his female atheist master – Hypatia. The film is directed by Alejandro Amenábar who previously worked with Nicole Kidman in ‘The Others’ and Penélope Cruz in ‘Abre Los Ojos’ (the original ‘Vanilla Sky’).

Dorian Gray

Finally, British Ben Barnes – the handsome Prince Caspian from 2008’s ‘Narnia’ movie – turns bad guy in the form of ‘Dorian Gray’. He starts off as just another naïve young man, partying with the upper classes in Victorian London. Then he meets Lord Henry Wotton (Colin Firth), the Devil’s messenger, who lures him into accepting a deal which becomes a curse. Dorian Gray stays young and handsome forever… but his soul simultaneously turns darker and uglier – as reflected in a painting of himself that was created when he first arrived in London. ‘Dorian Gray’ is based on classic Oscar Wilde, and takes us inside the darkest corners of human behaviour. Catch ‘Iron Man 2’ in all major theaters, while ‘Agora’ and ‘Dorian Gray’ will play only in Blitzmegaplex. www.21cineplex.com, www.blitzmegaplex.com

Sandhy Sondoro: Soul City Shaker 056 | beatmag.com

feature

M

Di bulan Desember 2009, Sandhy Sondoro resmi memulai kerjasamanya dengan Sony Music Indonesia via album Jazz in the City with Sandhy Sondoro di mana ia membawakan dua karyanya sendiri, Malam Biru (Kasihku), serta End of the Rainbow.

Usaha kerasnya mendapat ganjaran setimpal. Kumpulan penggemar kian hari kian membengkak, bertebaran di Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, dan penjuru Jerman lainnya. Prestasi musikalnya mencuat pertama kali—saat itu ia menyebut dirinya “Sondoro”—lewat lagu karyanya sendiri, Down on the Streets. Pada 25 April 2008 Sandhy merilis album perdananya, Why Don’t We.

Sandhy Sondhoro is arguably one of Indonesia’s best soul singers and started his musical career very humbly. Being raised in a musical family, Sandhy’s musical roots were planted from a young age. Even though graduating from a German University for Interior Design, his musical spirit was stronger leading him to start a low profile music career as a street musician and graduating to singing in bars. From these humble beginnings he eventually gained major recognition by winning East Europe’s New Wave Festival in 2009. He was scheduled to play on PBS, USA national television on April 7th and 8th, invited by Diane Warren, after seeing him perform at this years Java Jazz Festival. From his performance on USA television Sandhy’s fan base is sure to grow larger than expected.

This Jakartanese high-octane Rock outfit, Seringai, recently released a rockumentary entitled Generasi Menolak Tua (rejecting the old) on DVD. The interesting point here is that this is the first ever “proper” band rockumentary in Indonesia helping to add to the country’s local music history. This Documentary is loaded with the bands biographies, song lyrics and other interesting information about the band, which also includes their backstage activities, and other entertaining facts. The rockumentary was made to fulfill the hunger of the Wolves (Seringai’s fans) with knowledge and insights about the band’s rockin’ history, and also transform uninformed people into wolves. For information on purchasing the DVD contact them at: http://www.facebook.com/Seringai and see Indonesia’s rock history in the making.. beatmag.com | 059

A DELICIOUS KIND OF battle COFFEE WAR Kemang Timur 15 A, Jakarta Selatan

I

love the romanticism attached to coffee houses and the stories surrounding them, which have spanned over centuries. The drama, romance and scandals; political conspiracies discussed in hushed voices; chain-smoking poets and their timeless verses; struggling artists and actors with their own stories to tell, all beautifully woven. Coffee houses were not just a place to serve coffee but a social institution that became a centre of intellectual freedom, open discussion and where questioning was encouraged, written works were created and beautiful minds flourished without boundaries.

062 | beatmag.com

It seems nothing unsubstantial or meaningless happened in coffee houses back in the old days, which is a rarity nowadays. Nowadays, a coffee house is usually filled with people who are passing the time waiting for traffic jams to subside, having business meetings or updating Facebook statuses on their laptops. There doesn’t seem to be any coffeee houses these days that are anything like the ones of the past – or at least, I havent found one. So when I was told by my friend about Coffee War in Kemang, where she overheard two guys having a heated discussion about cultural revolution, I knew I had to give this place a visit. Coffee War is a quaint, cozy, little coffee corner tucked away in Kemang Timur, owned by the Sumule brothers, Derby and Yogi. The place is a glass box of coffee goodness that spoils its patrons with a variety of coffees from Mandailing, Java, Toraja and Timor. One of the brothers, Derby, a coffee connoisseur who spent time studying coffee in Sydney, Australia, prefers to drink his coffee the Indonesian ‘tubruk’ way. Not because he has anything against the espresso machine - he just prefers it manually brewed because it has the stronger aroma and local sensation that he loves. Coffee War certainly reflects its owner’s preference by not serving any espresso machine brewed coffee, only coffee that is manually brewed or tubruk, with a Moka pot, French press and ibrik (a small pot that holds one or two servings). Therefore you won’t

hear that high wheezing sound you always hear coming out of espresso machines… just lively conversations. The food here seems like an afterthought with a range of snacks such as bitter ballen, banana fritters and golden brown rissoles. The Pisang Londo (banana fritters bathed in pandan sauce and sprinkled with cheese) seems to be the crowd’s favorite. I sipped my delicious French-pressed coffee while secretly eavesdropping on the conversation on the next table about Charles Bukowsky. Seriously, this was just too surreal for Jakarta and I absolutely loved it! Coffee War has the qualities that I always envision (but rarely find) in a coffee house. Apart from its tasty coffee, there is something comforting and intelligent about this place that makes you want to discuss great books, poetry or movies, lament the Indonesian political situation, or, if you are one of those coffee house philosophers, debate existentialism. This intimate, far-from-pretentious, no-dresscode-required, open-‘til-whenever place, with owners who love to share their knowledge and passion about coffee has easily became my favorite place in Jakarta. Buddha Bar and new chef Alex Ensor

TBJ drops into Menteng’s most famed new restaurant and bar to try the new chef’s selection, which without a doubt is as mouthwatering as they claim.

064 | beatmag.com

T

he first thing that came to mind when I entered the upstairs dining area of the old immigration building in Menteng, which later became the new Buddhabar, was what the old immigration people were doing being in such a fine space in the first place. The upstairs restaurant is a large stately room with a very high ceiling, bathed in reds and soft lighting with an enormous Buddha statue sitting at one end overlooking the European and Asian influenced dining setting. The Buddha Bar look, feel, and idea is a French concept first conceived in the East and produced in Paris. It was later exported all over the world and eventually back to Asia and right here to Jakarta one year ago. With that heritage, I was quite happy and not surprised to be in this stylish Euro Asian dining room and maybe the immigration workers wouldn’t have been surprised with the way it turned out either. Anyway, we were here to try the food. After walking in and the waiter asking if we preferred smoking or non-smoking we were put down in the back corner behind the Buddha and kind of lost from the action. While I wondered if all non-smokers were shoved in the corner, I noticed other more interesting positions were available and without any fuss we were moved to the exact table I requested. The service I noted was keen to please. The new chef at Buddhabar, Alex Ensor had been there for a week when we visited and we were keen to find out how he was progressing. He is originally from NZ and after passing through a number of famed restaurants in Australia, including Guillaume in Bennelong, wound up in Jakarta’s SHY restaurant in Kemang. After his move to Buddhabar, the first thing he did was create a chef’s selection. It’s a new page of specialties on the menu that no doubt shows what direction he is moving. According to Bogdan Vlase, general manager at BB, they aren’t trying to over-do the fine dining and want to keep the pricing reasonable while the portion and taste the best that can be delivered.

We jumped into the chef’s selection page like hungry little beavers and selected the entrees and mains directly from the man himself. According to the BB press release, “Alex’s food has repeatedly been awarded ‘Hats’ by the Sydney Morning Herald, and his new a la carte selection has its roots in classic French techniques, but he is famed for adapting to his location by using local produce to create mouthwatering results.” It sounds like a high standard to keep but he does appear to be up for it. For the first course we chose Cured Salmon with a Beetroot Mayonnaise, flying fish roe with a coriander Chili salad [75k] which came out on the plate as strips of salmon in a tasty sauce, and a Oriental style Wagyu beef tartare ginger and sesame oil with coriander accompanied with Seaweed Parmesan Sphere [75k]. For mains we had an Oven Roasted Salmon [190k], which arrived with wasabi creamed potatoes, shitake mushrooms, fresh chili, spring onions with soy emulsion – a delectable dish displaying the chef’s grasp on the local Asian cuisine. The second main was a Steamed Crispy skinned duck breast [220k], kumara puree, beetroot glaze with a mandarin jus. This dish was also stunning with large tender slices of duck breast with the stiff kumara puree as a base that really did make the mouth water. For the price and quality of the dining and being in such elegant surroundings, Buddhabar and their new chef are literally cooking up a storm for Jakartan gourmands and bon vivants. The restaurant, while having its highs and lows over the past year appears to be hitting its straps and with new chef, Alex Ensor stepping up to the plate, it looks set to get back to where it belongs. And for anyone that doesn’t know, that’s at the top. [text Trauts photos Ramadhan] beatmag.com | 065

The Jakarta Chamber Orchestra, under conductor Avip Priatna with renowned Batavia Madrigal Singers and Armonia Choir, has been chosen to play at this concert. Together they will perform patriotic theme songs, folk songs from Flores and some love songs that Pak Frans was fond of. As an orchestra, Jakarta Chamber has an excellent reputation for playing a range of repertoires, from classical to contemporary and even opera. They have also joined forces with Batavia Madrigal Singers on several occasions already and are showing that Indonesia has a credible orchestra as well as a choir at an international standard.

Tribute to Frans Seda

By Erza S.T.

At the end of last year, Indonesia lost some of its best national heroes. Drs. Franciscus Xaverius Seda, also known as ‘Pak Frans’, was one of them. Frans Seda was without doubt one of Indonesia’s best sons. He was born in Flores, Nusa Tenggara Timur, 83 years ago. He dedicated over a decade of his life to serve as a government minister from 1963 to 1973, posted in various fields such as plantation, finance, transport and tourism. Aside from being a minister, Pak Frans was also known as an active politician, church member, educator and businessman with high levels of dedication and integrity. Everything he did was in the name of progress in Indonesia. He liked to act on issues, to give positive examples to the people. However, at the end of last year, Indonesia lost him for good. Frans Seda might be gone but his legacy will surely live among us. We have inherited a great vision, a way of thinking, a cheerful attitude and spirit. PPM Manajemen, as an educational institution that was led by Frans Seda for a significant period of time, have decided to pay their respects 100 days after his death by organizing a tribute concert called ‘Konser Musik Perjalanan Frans Seda: Simfoni Tiada Henti’; or in English, ‘A Music Concert on Frans Seda’s Journey: A Never Ending Symphony’, that will take place at Usmar Ismail Hall on April 22nd, 2010.

066 | beatmag.com

For those of you who admired Pak Frans as much as I did, this event will be a great opportunity to pay your respects for the very last time. However, for concert lovers and classical music lovers alike, this event will also be an interesting one to see the range of repertoires brought by both the orchestra and choir. Book in advance, as tickets are limited. If you enjoy the classical music discussion program FM KlaKon in Salihara, then watch out for their last session in April. This time they are going to be chatting about popular, long pieces of classical music that are esay to remember. The famous ‘Bolero’ by Maurice Ravel has been chosen to be the main subject of this discussion. I personally enjoy these discussions as they give so many insights into classical music in a way that anyone can enjoy. Don’t miss this one especially: Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ is a very passionate melody that will remain in your memory long after you hear it. Led by Slamet Abdul Sjukur, this discussion will take place at Salihara Lounge and is open for the public to join.

aramello is located at La Codefin, Kemang, right across from Warung Tekko.

It is a small business, whose sole purpose is to provide quality waxing treatments only, so there is no waiting around while therapists perform other, longer treatments on customers – you can get straight down to business, and as we all know, where waxing is concerned, the quicker the better! The Caramello staff have an excellent standard of hygiene. You will always be treated with brand new spatulas and cloths and there’s no double dipping, as

a new set of caramel vats will be provided for each customer. Worried about the price? Well don’t be: this treatment won’t drain your wallet at all. The staff there are really friendly and professional and put you at ease; the process was (almost) painless - other treatment places can be pretty hardcore! - and any remaining hairs are threaded rather than plucked, for a super-neat and painless finish. here’s no better feeling than wearing a crisp white shirt or sundress when the sun is shining. But, many women struggle with the question: ‘What should I wear under white?’ There’s no straightforward answer, but there are some ‘dos and don’ts’ when it comes to under-white-underwear… DON’T wear white underwear under white clothing. As obvious a choice of color as this may seem, it is actually a no-no. There’s nothing worse than donning white underwear, getting dressed then realizing all too late that you could guide ships inland with your pants. The brightness of the underwear is simply enhanced by its white covering… making your underwear the star of the show and not the outfit itself. Of course, you may own an amazing lingerie set that you actually want to show off. In this event… DO make a classy job of wearing visible lingerie. It should fit properly – no tight muffin-top-creating knickers (imagine the way a muffin spills over the side of its packaging), or bra fastenings that creep up your back, as this suggests your bra is too small or poorly adjusted. Wear a funky/ sexy/trendy style so that people know you intend to have your smalls on show and that you haven’t just got dressed in the dark. Think Carrie Bradshaw, from ‘Sex and the City’. Go for bright funky colors if you want to, but, if the lingerie is white, make sure it really is white – there’s nothing worse than seeing a dirty grey or yellow bra strap over a woman’s shoulder.

DON’T allow your G-string to become visible: visible G-strings may have been ok in 2001, but in 2010, they really are a no-go zone and scream out ‘tacky’, so be careful! DO invest in some nude or flesh-colored underwear if you want it to remain “for your eyes only”. Try several shades in the shop until you find one that best matches your own skin tone. While nude is a safe option, some women find that it doesn’t give them the sexy, feminine feeling they want from their lingerie. So… DO try red. Yes, red! Believe it or not, so long as the shade is not too pink or orangetinted, red underwear has the same effect as fleshcolored underwear when worn under most white clothing (depending on the transparency of the garment). Try it and see on your next shopping trip. You can dazzle in white, safe in the knowledge that you look sassy, and remain classy… Amanda – www.fashionesedaily.com Style & Beauty with Attitude

COMIC PLEASURES [text & photos: fonnyta amran]

B

ambang Toko’s solo exhibition ‘Titian Muhibah: Serumpun, Senada, Seirama’ at Langgeng Gallery, Jakarta Art District, presents ten acrylic paintings depicting enlarged comic book panels. The exhibition reveals Bambang’s signature style that blends urban kampong street art with cheesy 80’s pop songs and comic humor. The visuals are stark and colorful with keen eye to detail, which produces work that is not only fun to look at but also interestingly refreshing. The Title ‘Titian Muhibah: Serumpun, Senada, Seirama’ is taken from a joint program of TVRI RTM from the 1980s, which was chosen from Bambang’s personal interpretation of the Malay-Indonesian retro pop culture. The two neighboring countries (Indonesia and Malaysia) have had their share of cultural clashes and controversies stemming from their tight cultural heritage and ethnicities. Bambang however, refuses such notions and chooses to bring forward the strong bond these two countries have on pop culture memories. Indonesians who grew up during the 80s will always remember the Malay Rock Invasion with their cheesy rock

tune ‘Isabella’, which enjoyed heavy radio play, thus solidifying Indonesian’s penchant for slow rock ballads. Bambang works in this exhibition underline the common ground between Indonesia and Malaysia by bringing forward strong recollections of those years. Deriving from vintage romance comics and illustrations by Jan Mintaraga, Bambang painted a parody of the whole of song ‘Cinta Kita’ (a duet between Indonesian rock sweetheart Inka Christy and Malaysian rock legend Amy Search, and Malay ballad ‘Isabella’. For us the viewers, Bambang’s works are undeniably refreshing and rewarding, conveying all kinds of flashes of nostalgic pleasure. The ‘Titian Muhibah: Serumpun, Senada, Seirama – a Solo Exhibition’ by Bambang Toko Witjaksono is open for viewing until 30 April 2010 at Langgeng Gallery, Jakarta Art District, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town, Lower Ground, East Mall, Jl. MH Thamrin no. 1 Jakarta.

FLUID ‘F FRICTION Text & photos: Fonnyta Amran & SigiArts Gallery

luid Friction’, a solo exhibition by Arin Dwihartanto at SigiArts Gallery, displays captivating flowing colors that immediately catch your attention. The smooth, neat and shiny quality of his work is achieved by the use of unconventional paint materials, such as resin liquid, which is usually used as a coating to make surfaces smooth and shiny, but in the hands of Arin Dwihartanto, it becomes the vehicle for his vision. Dwihartanto admitted that these particular works of his are brought to the surface by his questions and desire to have a new perspective on the activity of painting. These questions, such as what type of brush strokes are used and why, or whether ideas can be conveyed through other methods and mediums, are the very artistic curiosities which propelled these resin color dances. They have been dripped, spilled and splashed to construct a new narrative, which at times resembles slightly the Rorschach ink blots. Hendro Wiyanto, who curated the exhibition, described Arin’s process when working with this medium as intense. “He hauled his tools, pushed and used a gliding board that works like a mop or a glass cleaning tool for high-rise buildings” Wiyanto explained. And that is where the fluidity of materials and Arin’s experimental desire collided. Arin’s use of weatheproof and scratchproof coating materials make his work appear like photographic images, that reach us in a somewhat peculiar yet delightfully attractive form. Fluid Friction: a solo exhibition by Arin Dwihartanto is open for viewing until April 25th 2010 at SigiArts Gallery, Jl. Mahakam I no.II, Jakarta. Tel (021) 726 0949

Nostalgic Journey

M

usfiq Amarullah’s solo exhibition, titled ‘Childhood Toys’ in Tembi Rumah Budaya, Jakarta, depicts the artist’s yearning for traditional children’s games, which nowadays have largely been replaced by digital toys. His charcoal sketches contain such decorative appeal, which brings out the innocence and soft simplicity of his narratives, in turn bringing back recollections of our own childhood. The children’s expressions when playing with their toys fill the viewer with a nostalgic resonance. From charcoal drawings, he moves to large oil paintings, consistently characterized by controlled brushstrokes. Amarullah also alternates his medium between watercolors

and colored canvas that fit seamlessly to create that intimate feel. What is so wonderful about this collection is how connected his message is to the viewers. They bring a certain nostalgic echo that calmly and effortlessly settles in our minds, bringing the understanding that no matter how plain traditional toys may seem, they create a more substantial connection than any digital toys can offer. Childhoold Toys – A solo exhibition by Musfiq Amarullah is open for viewing until 27 April 2010 at Tembi Rumah Budaya, Jl. Gandaria I no 17 B, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta Selatan.

Despite the limited amount of venues supporting original live music, Bali is still home to a huge network of talented musicians and songwriters. Not to be held back by the system, bands are still forming and jamming it out in rehearsal studio across the island, recording albums and performing wherever they can set up their gear. The Beat decided to take a closer look at who’s been making the most amount of noise…

riginally known as ‘Lolot’, mid-2008 saw this band go their separate ways, when different dreams and desires for themselves in the music business forced them to split. More recently though, Denny, Donnie and Lanang made the decision to reform as ‘Rokavatar’, this time welcoming on board talented new vocalist Bobi, whose style is influenced by Jamaican rock. Combining the learning curves of their time apart, the new energy of this group clearly shows and brings a solid professionalism to their stage shows. Their debut album ‘Fly Away’ consists of six new tracks – four English and two Indonesian. The new record, along with their recent promo tour with Nyanyian Dharma in India, both appear to be pointing down the road to success for Rokavatar…

omow originally tried kicking this project into gear with the name ‘Chocolate Milksex’. By the time Rika and Partanx had joined him though, the style and direction had changed and the band that developed took on the title of Ice Cream Attack! They’ve only been on the scene since August last year but their brand of kiddy electronic is already finding itself on plenty of stages across Bali. Mixing pop, punk, electronica and rock with the midi console game themes that soundtracked the band members’ childhoods, ‘Icecream Attack!’ fuses together a light-hearted approach to songwriting with a serious passion for their craft, influenced by the sounds of The Title, Blink 182, Unicorn Kid, Metro Station, and the famous mogul NINTENDO!

ormed in June 2005, there were a number of changes on the guitarist front before Joyride found their ground. After much trial and error though, the Pop – Punk quad had their sound in the pocket and began pushing in the direction of Emo/Post-Hardcore. Over time their music has evolved and a nuance of Indie Rock, Power Pop and Happy Hardcore has been ingrained into their songs. Joyride themselves describe their type of music as Rock with the essences of catchy pop beats. Their songs are characterized with catchy guitar riffs, heavy distortion, dynamic pop beats and smart and poetic lyrics. Original tracks such as ‘Shara’, ‘Check 1, 2, 3’, ‘Bara dalam Asa’ and ‘Senang Sebuah Perjalanan’ can be heard being thrashed out live at their stage shows. They are currently working on an album so keep your ears peeled for a release date.

ringing back the best tunes from the 90s Alternative Rock era, Mike’s is a creative quartet that has been hitting the scene since 2005. Nostalgic songs from the days of grunge and emotion-packed songwriting are brought back through riveting fresh arrangements accompanied by pristine vocal harmonizing. Vocalist Dendy knows how to liven up a crowd and doesn’t let anyone hold him back when it comes to screaming out his message with a thick coarse voice, capable of interpreting the best of them. The band itself sees themselves as more of

a group of traveling minstrels compared to a band due to their live acoustic concept, generally playing unplugged sessions and leaving the distortion behind. The calm and clean cut impressions usually related with acoustic music has been overturned though, by the band’s exciting stage performances and high energy. Encore performances are generally expected with this crew and with original tracks in the making, single releases are set to be available digitally in the not-too-distant future. Keep your ears to the ground...

was April 5th, the fifth and final day of the Oakley Pro 2010 - a six-star rated Coca Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour event. It took place at Canggu Beach on the West Coast of Bali, just a few minutes north of Kuta. Sixty four of Indonesia’s best pro surfers and eleven Masters (aged 35+) competed for prestige, prize money and points on some of the best waves in the world. Bali’s Made Awan charged to the top spot, posting the highest wave score of the day and of the entire event: 9 points out of a possible 10. He pushed 2008 ISC Champ and current WQS surfer, Dede Suryana from West Java, into second place and held him there until time ran out, making him the winner of the first event in the 2010 Tour. Awan received a Rp 10 million cash prize from Oakley and now sits in the number one spot on the ISC Tour rankings by racking up a whopping 3,000 championship points to kick off his season with a bang. He also received the Coca-Cola Best Maneuver Award for getting the highest wave score of the event, nabbing an extra Rp 1 million in prize money. Suryana jumped to an early lead and soon had Awan on the ropes with a 6.75 and an 8.0, but then Awan really got going with a 7.25 followed by his huge 9-point wave, leaving Suryana needing an 8.35. A few minutes later Awan picked off another beauty to post an 8.25, thus requiring Suryana to score an even bigger 9.35. With just seconds left on the clock, Suryana took off, landing a huge air,

ast month saw the opening of Tobelo Café in Kerobokan. This lovely little café /restaurant is soon to become part of the main arcade belonging to the Aston Fave Condotel – due to open later this year. It is a small, intimate, friendly café environment, where customers are made to feel so welcome by staff that you could almost be in somebody’s home. A smart decked area is home to outdoor seating with umbrellas and twinkling fairy lights, which add to the chilled, night-time ambience. The restaurant itself is completely glass-fronted, creating a chic and open atmosphere. Downstairs is fully air-conditioned, providing welcome respite from that relentless Bali heat. Inside, you’ll find attractive wooden tables and chairs, funky wall art made from twisted tree bark and an open wooden staircase, which give the place a rustic feel. The stairs lead to more seating and a smoking area, and photographs of Balinese life and culture adorn the walls. After sitting down and picking up a menu, the objective here is clear: high quality food at reasonable prices.

You’ll find an eclectic menu at Tobelo Café, which caters perfectly for the cosmopolitan clientele, from the ‘Asian Corner’, to the healthy ‘Fresh and Green’ section, plus a variety of Western dishes. The Western cuisine on the menu ranges from Italian pizzas and pastas (30-35K), to Greek Seasoned Chicken (50K) or Souvlaki Sandwich (30K) and homemade American Burgers (35K). The head chef is Balinese 28-year old, L. Halin, who is more than qualified for his role; after working in London and Singapore, Halin returned to Bali, where he spent several years working for Ramayana Resorts before helping to launch Tobelo Café. A typical selection of drinks are available, plus a delicious range of blended juices and smoothies (18-25K). Try the scrumptious Strawberry or Banana Favorite. To whet your appetite, you can sample one of the starters. We recommend the Mexican Quesadillas (30K), which are pan-fried soft tortillas containing chili cheese with a bit of a kick, served with guacamole, salsa and sour

cream. One of the most popular main meals is the Italian Pollo di Fungi (50K). Succulent chicken breast is wrapped in breadcrumbs, stuffed with Parma ham, melted cheese and mushrooms and served in a creamy mustard sauce with seasoned vegetables and sliced potato wedges. If fish is more your dish, try the beautifully cooked Fillet of Fish in Black Olive Oil (60k). This is served with a super-creamy pureed potato, and topped with sliced black olives and zingy caramelized red chili, which gives this dish an almost sweet taste. Diners can choose from Tuna or Snapper for all fish dishes. Alternatively, if you’re here to try something local, order the Grilled Fish with Traditional Sambal Matah (55K). The traditional Balinese sambal gives a spicy edge to the dish, without being too hot. It sits on a bed of Balinese water spinach called Plecing Gonda and comes with rice, fries or mash. Sweet-toothed customers can choose from a selection of simple yet tasty desserts, including a variety of fabulous homemade ice-creams such as Mint Choc or Mixberry Yoghurt, or try the French Toast with Lemonade Sauce – a mouthwateringly zesty and refreshing finale to your meal. Tobelo Café is open every day from 8am-11pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a free WiFi service for any customer with a laptop, and parties with numbers of up to 62 can be catered for if you book in advance. If you can’t make it to the café itself, just give them a call and they’ll home deliver. Great things really do come in small packages…
